Here’s What Halo Fans Will Get For Putting Up With Halo: The Master Chief Collection’s Troubled Launch

Last month, 343 Industries head Bonnie Ross told Halo fans that the studio “will take care of all owners of Halo: The Master Chief Collection” that were affected by its bothersome launch.

Having put up with shoddy online matchmaking and numerous updates to increase stability and fix bugs, Halo fans who stuck it out since the beginning learned today exactly what they’ll be getting as compensation. Ross made good on her word in a letter addressed to fans.

“We are so grateful to our fans who have stood by our side and we appreciate all of your patience as we worked through these issues,” she wrote. “As a token of our appreciation and to thank fans for the continued support and understanding, we will be offering the following items, for free, to anyone who has played Halo: The Master Chief Collection online since launch (11.11.14) through today (12.19.14).”

Here’s what was listed:

  • 1 Month of Xbox Live Gold
  • Exclusive In-Game Nameplate
  • Exclusive In-Game Avatar

But it gets much better. In the future, 343 will offer the following additional digital content for free once during the Spring of 2015:

  • Halo 3: ODST Campaign – Development has just started on the campaign for Halo 3: ODST, which will be available within Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and upgraded to 1080p resolution, running at 60fps. It will be available for free to anyone who has played Halo: The Master Chief Collection since launch (11.11.14) through today (12.19.14). Thanks to our friends at Bungie for creating the original “Halo 3: ODST” campaign.
  • “Relic” Halo 2: Anniversary Multiplayer Map – Available via a free content update to Halo: The Master Chief Collection, we will reimagine the fan-favorite map “Relic,” fully remastered and running at 1080p resolution and 60fps. We chose this map based on its suitability for Slayer and Objective modes and its ability to support teams of varying sizes. And you can trust that Certain Affinity will tune and tweak the map to make it even better than you remember.

Specifics on eligibility can be found here.

As planned, an additional content update next week will introduce all ten episodes of Halo 4’s “Spartan Ops” mode to the collection as well. Earlier this week, a Halo: CE playlist was integrated into matchmaking.

So, did 343 make good on their promise? Are you satisfied with how the studio has treated the situation and their fans? Tell us in the comments and keep your sights on MP1st for more Halo updates!

Remember, if you are an Xbox Preview Member, you get early access to the Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer beta this weekend.

The Holiday Season has arrived in Los Santos. Plenty of updates are inbound to Grand Theft Auto Online this Holiday as developer Rockstar Games celebrates the occasion with its fans.

Following today’s Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 update, there’s plenty to look forward to over the break, including new weapons and equipment like the Homing Missile Launcher and Proximity Mines, and new cars like the Hot Rod Christmas Ratloader, Slam Van, and Massacro and Jester sports cars with new Race liveries.

Best of all, you’ll be able to take these new rides for a spin in true Winter conditions that will show up on only certain days over the Holidays. Watch out for snowballs and dress warm with new closet items, including ‘ugly’ sweaters and new scarves, hats, masks, and more.

On Christmas morning, after checking out what’s under your tree, you’ll also want to see what Santa left in your GTA Online inventory. Drop by again any time during the rest of the holidays to take part in New Years celebrations with the Firework Launcher and Firework rocket ammo.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection Review-In-Progress

Legends. They are the posters we hang up on our walls, the subjects of the monuments we build, the role models we strive to be; And in this case, the ones we play.

Halo is more than just the face of now three generations of gaming. It is a legendary mark of innovation from developers Bungie and 343 industries’ efforts to mix compelling storytelling and competitive multiplayer all into one little sci-fi package. Halo capitalized on something very special with its innovative design to put a competitive first-person shooter game on a console, and that something was personalized relationships between friends and family alike by offering an insanely fun multiplayer right out of the box.

Halo is arguably the reason why the Xbox brand even exists today. Even so, Halo has gathered a massive following throughout its 13 years, numbing the minds of gamers with its sci-fi delicacies and a robust universe (seriously, read the books, they’re all canon and a really good read).

As with all memorable sagas, now arrives a definitive collection of the Halo legend to celebrate the franchise’s longevity, a collection that stars the faceless and mysterious protagonist Master Chief, a Spartan saving humanity from a collective of alien races known as the Covenant. We (as in Halo fans) have been screaming for something like this ever since Halo 3 dropped, imagining how amazing something of this magnitude would possible be. After having waited for so long, we now finally have it in our grasp having launched last November, but the question is – Is it worth it? Has it lived up to the hype? Is it really everything we’ve ever wanted out of Halo? Why did we wait so long to review it?

Halo

A Legacy On One Disc

Halo has always flourished in its ability to deliver a satisfying challenge to players with its multiplayer offerings, and one of the most notable things about the multiplayer is how insanely fun and diverse it is. Each installment in the franchise has shown that, but with Halo: The Master Chief Collection, you get to experience the scale of it all with a truly massive amount of multiplayer content right out of the box. Halo 1, 2, 3, and 4 all return with every single map ever officially released as both vanilla and DLC versions, including beautifully reimagined maps in the re-mastered Halo 2: Anniversary Edition to give you a grand total of 106 in all. On top of that, Forge returns as it was in Halo 3 and 4 but now also supports the new Halo 2: Anniversary with a number of improvements in addition.

All of it is neatly presented in a completely unified user interface design on one disc, so there’s no swapping between older title menus, with social add-ons that track score and completion times of campaign progress, etc. 450 Achievements, both new and familiar, are also in the box to earn or re-earn. Multiplayer is broken down into various playlists that mix and match game types across different Halo games or that remain exclusive to one title. Players can choose separate controller schemes for each Halo title or pick a unified layout that carries across all titles.

To match up to more modern standards, all titles are also upgraded to a 1080p resolution and run at 60 frames per second, which is twice as fast as the previous generation versions. It’s a game-changer and in a good way. Meanwhile, Halo 2: Anniversary is built on the Halo 4 engine to provide a very refreshing and visually pleasing take on a old classic with brand new music and sound effects. Like Halo: CE Anniversary, swapping between old and new in Halo 2: Anniversary’s campaign is just a press of the button that is now instantaneous.

If classic Halo 2 multiplayer, button glitches and all, isn’t everything you remembered and more, the Anniversary Edition offers a selection of fan-favorite maps re-imagined for a new generation, including Lockout, Ascension, Zanzibar, Coagulation, Warlock and Sanctuary, along with some new weapon pick-ups and vehicles.

With so much to offer, you get to enjoy a vast amount of multiplayer mo… Well, actually, that’s the thing. You don’t.

Halo

For Failure Such As This, No Punishment Is Too Great

If you’re a returning fan, you know how fun Halo can be; You’ve seen everything from one player carrying the team to victory to epic comebacks in highly competitive gameplay. But, the chance of all that happening again is overshadowed by the lack of decent online matchmaking since November.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection has sat abruptly broken in this department, causing an experience that’s not only unpleasant but angering. Custom Games remains functional and are what the majority of players have had to make due with, but Halo has always been about beating down complete strangers miles away in an online environment.

After one month of frustrating sessions of trying to find the the two players against your full team in The Master Chief Collection’s unbalanced matchmaking (when it does actually work), it seems that things have now improved tenfold patch by patch, of which there have been more than you can count on your ten fingers since launch. Now, waiting to be paired into games no longer takes an hour, though it still isn’t perfect. The fact that 343 Industries, in an effort to give players the ability to actually play with others, took away most of the playlists and slimmed it down to the barebones of what makes Halo; Halo, is a bit disappointing.

As of this writing, the only playlists that consist of the possibility to play multiplayer game types that aren’t Halo 2 are Halo 3, Big Team Battle, Team Slayer, and SWAT. It clearly deprives the Collection of being what it should have been at launch and, as many might feel, I shouldn’t have to wait until 2015 to actually play a fully-realized and fully-functioning Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

Packaging a multitude of completely different Halo engines into one online multiplayer package can be a painstaking and risky ordeal with plenty of room for error. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like 343 Industries was able to overcome those challenges. Still, I honestly expected more from a developer and publisher who showed that they were going out of their way to offer their fans a piece of nostalgia that brought an entire series together. Taking an honest look at the state of the game before launch and allowing for more development time, delaying the launch if necessary, would perhaps have faired better for everyone. For failure such as this, no punishment is too great.

Halo

Legends Never Die, They’re Just Missing In Action

Halo has always been the trophy of Xbox and has created such a diverse way of experiencing online multiplayer over Xbox Live that it is unparalleled to other games. Offering every piece of content from all four Halo games along with the Anniversary Editon of Halo 2, Halo: The Master Chief Collection is a shining example of value priced well below what it could have been offered at.

With that said, it’s been far too long that die-hard Halo fans have waited for such a collection and yet the multiplayer, the most anticipated pillar of the franchise, seems like it was the last thing that was touched before the game was released. Buying this game one month later is a foolish mistake and I highly recommend avoiding it for the time being.

We have decided that this review-in-progress will be updated every other patch that is released because we know Halo is a great game just plagued with temporary problems. A lot of you are holding on to your wallet after initial word-of-mouth, so if you are still itching to immerse yourself in a definitive Halo experience on Xbox One as soon as it becomes a polished product, be sure to check back for updates.

Halo

This review remains a work-in-progress until Halo: The Master Chief becomes a fully-functioning and polished product with more to examine and explore. We’ll keep you update in the meantime.

Grand Theft Auto Online Heists Are Finally Revealed, Watch The Debut Trailer

Finally, Rockstar Games is talking about the four-player online co-operative mode that has been promised for Grand Theft Auto Online for quite some time now.

Heists have been officially revealed and are coming to GTA Online in early 2015. No, an exact date still doesn’t appear to be locked down, but it’s coming, and there’s a new trailer to prove it, which you can watch above.

According to GTA Online Producer Imran Sarwar in an interview with IGN, Heists will introduce “five unique strands involving over 20 total missions, which will add up to around 20 hours of gameplay.”

“We have several rewards for players as well,” he added, “such as for playing all five heists in order with the same set of players and another bonus for playing all of them in first-person [mode] on PS4, Xbox One, or PC, as well as Elite Bonus Challenges, which are essentially a big cash reward if you complete each part of a heist while meeting certain criteria, such as time to complete, damage taken, accuracy etc.”

“Each heist requires 4 players all at rank 12 or above, with one player as the designated heist leader. Leading a heist requires owning a high-end apartment so that you have a room available to set up the planning board. From there you’ll be able to launch missions as the leader, starting with the prep work and building up to the score itself.”

The mode has shaped up quite differently than what was initially conceptualized which ultimately led to its lengthy delay. “To be honest, [Heists] just turned out to be a lot more difficult than we originally thought,” Sarwar admitted.

“As it turns out, creating missions of that complexity for multiple players at the same time was much more difficult than we anticipated and every time we thought we were close, something would send us back to square one,” he explained. “Having already let players know of our intentions with Heists, every setback only increased the pressure to make sure we got them right.”

“After many months of designing, testing, rewriting and re-testing, we settled on the four-player structure that you will experience in the game. It took a ton of work from our programmers and mission designers to make it work at the level we were happy with.”

You can read the entire talk with Sarwar over at IGN for more details on Heists. As we mentioned, the reveal trailer is up there, if you want to take a look, as are a bunch of new screens that you can check out below.

Destiny’s Iron Banner Returns With Upgraded Armor and New Weapons For Purchase

Destiny‘s Iron Banner competitive multiplayer event for the month of December is now live on all platforms until the 22nd.

As before, Guardians level 20 or higher can lead a party into the special Crucible playlist where level advantages are turned on, meaning attack and defense ratings will play a large role in your effectiveness against other Guardians.

In terms of rules, not much has changed since the last Iron Banner event. Rank progression has been reset and players will once again have the opportunity to work through five ranks in total to earn similar emblems, class items, armor, and weapons. The difference this time is a selection two new weapons up for grabs at rank 4 and 5 — Efrideet’s Spear Sniper Rifle and Silimar’s Wrath Auto Rifle — higher attack ratings, as well as new armor with higher Light levels that will help your Guardian get to level 31.

Screen Shot 2014-12-16 at 4.01.41 AM

You can familiarize yourself with the rest of the rules and settings by visiting Bungie’s official Iron Banner page.

See you in the Iron Banner!

343 Executive Producer Drops New Details On Halo 5: Guardians’ Multiplayer Beta

Halo 5: Guardians‘ multiplayer beta is just over two weeks away and is the first time fans will get a taste of developer 343 Industries’ new vision for Halo multiplayer from the comfort of their own home.

Executive Producer Josh Holmes dropped by the studio’s fourth bulletin update to offer a few new details on the upcoming beta.

As you may have already heard, the beta will allow gamers to test out Halo 5: Guardians’ spectator mode. According to Holmes, players can view matches of anyone on their friends list. The stream will be slightly delayed, however, in order to avoid the potential for cheating, akin to a saved film streaming off a dedicated server.

The beta will involve fans in more ways than one as players will have the opportunity to cast votes on week two and three, Holmes added. On week two, players will vote for their choice of Power Weapon that will appear on certain maps while, on week three, players will vote between maps.

Holmes says seven maps and three game modes will be introduced gradually throughout the three weeks of beta, starting on December 29, so there’ll be something new to try out every week.

At 4:50 of the bulletin, 343 shows off some brand new exclusive Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer gameplay on the map Truth, so you’ll definitely check it out in the video above, ideally with some headphones. Josh Holmes’ talk starts at around 2:30.

For all your Halo 5: Guardians news, keep your sights on MP1st.

Visceral Lead Multiplayer Designer Talks Battlefield Hardline Multiplayer Class Balance

Fuelling some discussion over on the Battlelog forums, Visceral Games Lead Multiplayer Designer on Battlefield Hardline dropped by to describe some of his thoughts on class balance in the studio’s upcoming cops vs. criminals shooter.

Moving away from Battlefield 4‘s more traditional military theme and into the crime-filled world of the criminal underground, Battlefield Hardline takes on a slightly different philosophy to multiplayer class balance. Similar to Battlefield 4, the four-class set-up remains, though the role each plays may differ.

Here’s the lowdown on Hardline’s class balance philosophy in the words of Lead Multiplayer Designer Thadeus Sasser:

OPERATOR – Role: Primary Gunfighter and Medic

    • First Aid Pack…Heal teammates
    • Survivalist…Revive yourself after an explosive kill
    • Revive…Revive teammates

This class is powerful, but balanced now. The Operator’s extensive selection of carbines and assault rifles gives him a wide engagement range and the medical function of the class is very important for teamwork. However, his limited number of gadgets makes him a little bit more accessible to new players and also limits his flexibility, meaning other classes are needed to support him.

MECHANIC – Role: Gadgets and Vehicles

    • 40mm GL…Destroy vehicles
    • Repair Tool…Repair vehicles, disarm explosive traps
    • Sabotage…Trap vehicles and objectives
    • Armored Insert…Survive a sniper shot to the chest
    • Sat Phone…Place a spawn point for your teammates

The Mechanic started off as a pure vehicle-based role, but vehicles are somewhat less prominent in Hardline, so it evolved over time. Where it is right now is a pretty sweet spot. Being the “gadget guy” means he gets an eclectic collection of useful toys, but he still retains his importance in vehicle-based maps and modes. A great complement to the Operator, as his close-range SMGs can destroy nearby enemies effectively.

ENFORCER – Role: Support

    • Ammo Bag…Resupply teammates
    • Breaching Charge….Destroy walls & vehicles, set traps at objectives
    • Riot Shield…Defend yourself and teammates

The Enforcer is still a bad-ass. Capable close range shotguns and long range battle rifles, along with the ability to provide ammunition to teammates and shield them from damage are powerful abilities. In addition, he’s got the every-popular Breaching Charge which allows him some tactical flexibility and brings a great deal of appeal to the class.

PROFESSIONAL – Role: Traps and Intel

    • Laser Tripmine…Lay traps for agents
    • Camera…Spots approaching enemies
    • Decoy…Deceives enemies
    • Stealth Training…Reduce enemy awareness of your movements

The hard-hitting DMRs and SRs the professional has can be used to secure an objective from a distance, while his rapid-fire sidearm can be used close-in. The camera and LTMs can help the pro survive being flanked and ambushed, and can be used tactically to defend objectives to assist his team. In addition, stealth training lets the pro get up close and personal, getting the drop on unsuspecting enemies.

As Sasser mentions, the list above only includes class-exclusive gadgets. For a full list of all gadgets, weapons, attachments, camos, grenades, and more, be sure to check out some of the Hotwire multiplayer gameplay footage that dropped earlier this month.

What do you think about Battlefield Hardline’s set-up so far? Do you like the new direction class balance is headed in, or are you saving your thoughts for the game’s second beta due out sometime before launch on March 17? Tell us in the comments!

Thanks, GoGoGadgetLol on Reddit.

Insurgency – New Free Content Update and Steam Holiday Sale Now Live

Developer New World Interactive is rounding off the year and kicking off the Holidays on a high note with another free content update for the studio’s gritty, military-sim, first-person PC shooter, Insurgency.

Now live, the new update — and the last one for 2014 — adds a new pistol to the arsenal of both the Security and Insurgents, the M45 and M1911. It also mixes in new maps for the Survival and Hunt playlists with new night versions of Buhriz and Revolt for Insurgency’s player-versus-player multiplayer. You’ll also find a number of other gameplay improvements, map updates, and other additions.

All of the new content will be showcased in an upcoming developer live stream later today that you can catch on Insurgency’s official Twitch channel at 5:30 PM PST with NWI community manager Michael Tsarouhas and guests.

If you like what you see and have yet to snag a copy of one of our favorite first-person PC shooters this year, you can take advantage of Insurgency’s Steam sale starting today, which knocks 55% of the game’s price, putting it at $6.74 USD until December 16.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare And Destiny Lead The Pack As Top-Selling Console Titles Of The Year

In the U.S., Sledgehammer Games’ Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Bungie’s Destiny rose to the top of the charts as this year’s best-selling video games on consoles, publisher Activision announced today.

On Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is the number one selling video game for the sixth consecutive year in a row followed by Destiny, a brand new IP from iconic developer Bungie that has become the best-selling new video game franchise of the year.

Three months after launch, Destiny received its first content expansion earlier this week called The Dark Below, introducing new missions, Strikes, Raids, Crucible maps, Exotic, Legendary, and Rare gear, and more. Meanwhile, Advanced Warfare’s first multiplayer expansion is due out early 2015 called the Havoc Map Pack and will introduce the Exo Zombies game mode. Yesterday, Xbox users got early access to the AE4 directed energy Assault Rifle, also included in the upcoming Map Pack.

What are your thoughts on Destiny three months after launch and Call of Duty Advanced Warfare one month after launch? Are they deserving of the top-selling console games this year? Let us know in the comments!
