Get a First Look At Handsome Jack In Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel

As we all know, Handsome Jack, antagonist of Borderlands 2, is set to be one of the good guys in 2K Australia and Gearbox’s upcoming shoot-and-loot title, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.

However, what we don’t know is what lead Handsome Jack to become the tyrant he came to be in Borderlands 2, nor what he looks like, until now. This week’s cosplay guide for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel features Handsome Jack himself.

Check out the images below:

entry-20140603-Jack-pic1

entry-20140603-Jack_FB_Comp

Aside from the weird looking pinky fingers, the model for Handsome Jack actually looks pretty cool.

Additionally, judging from the reference guide, the vault symbol that was burned into the face of Handsome Jack as seen in the final moments of Borderlands 2 is missing. This may indicate that we actually get to find out how Handsome Jack gets imprinted with the vault symbol sometime in the story of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is set to release this Fall for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 platforms.

Mortal Kombat X – Two All New Characters Set To Debut At E3 2014

E3 2014 is shaping up to be a great one this year, especially for Mortal Kombat fans, as the latest entry in the franchise, Mortal Kombat X will be showcased during next week’s events.

However, it appears that Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has something special up his sleeve, according to recent tweets:

Considering that NetherRealm Studios is really into fan service and turning any easter egg into fully-fleshed out characters like Ermac, Rain, and more recently, Skarlett, it wouldn’t be too surprising if at least one of the characters below were to be revealed at next week:

Belokk

Belokk

Belokk, whom was originally slated for release with Mortal Kombat Gold, was unfortunately cut from the final release, according to Boon, as the studio didn’t have enough time to complete the character.

In fact the developer for Mortal Kombat 4/Gold actually revealed screen shots of Belokk a few months before the title was released:

Hornbuckle

Remember those two fighters who were fighting in the background of The Pit II stage in Mortal Kombat II? If so, you’ll remember that one of them actually became the character “Blaze” who served as Mortal Kombat: Armageddon’s boss for the arcade ladder and played a very important part in the story.

7-the pit II

This leads to the question, ‘what ever happened to that guy who was fighting Blaze?’

Dubbed by Mortal Kombat fans as “Hornbuckle,” nothing much became of him aside from appearing in the background of the Pit II stage once again in Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. But MK fans have long awaited for his arrival as an actual playable character with every release since. Might it actually happen this time?

Tremor

Unlike the previous two character who haven’t officially appeared in a Mortal Kombat release, Tremor, the brown-colored ninja palette swap did appear in the PlayStation Vita version of Mortal Kombat 9 as a playable character. Though he wasn’t initially selectable in the character select screen for the game, Tremor was playable in one of the bonus challenge towers.

TremorUMK3

We also know a bit about Tremor’s special abilities, as he’s able to create small earthquakes and project stones at his opponents, petrifying them over time.

Who ever it is, it looks like we’ll find out next week at E3 when NetherRealm Studios showcases Mortal Kombat X, slated for a 2015 release for the PC, PlayStation 3/4 and Xbox 360/One.

If you missed it, catch the debut trailer here.

Star Wars: Battlefront – What Do We Want To See At E3 2014 and Beyond?

Since the the memorable announcement trailer that first debuted during last year’s E3, scoring any geek a free trip to the emergency ward by way of heart attack, developer DICE has been nothing short of vague with details surrounding the upcoming revival of the popular Star Wars shooter franchise.

As the studio previously mentioned, however, Star Wars: Battlefront, as it’s currently being dubbed, will be showcased at E3 2014 during EA’s press conference, and perhaps on the E3 show floor. So, “yay” for Star Wars fans like us. But what exactly do we want to see with its return?

All-In-One Ground And Space Battles

Turn back the clocks to 2009. Free Radical, a developer working on the sequel to Battlefront 2, was bought by Crytek and their game, which was “99% finished,” was cancelled. Gameplay has since leaked and even live streamed by an insider who nabbed the latest build of the unfinished project. On display were ever-evolving battles that allowed soldiers to fight their way through infantry and ground forces in one of Star Wars’ many iconic locales. From there, we saw the ability to take the fight through the atmosphere and into outer space in a seamless progression of events.

How could this translate over to DICE’s project? Imagine game modes like Conquest and Air Superiority taking place at the same time with capture points on both the ground and in orbit. Or, take a game mode like Rush and expand it so that the battle progresses from planetside to inner atmosphere and culminates in an epic space battle. A Star Wars take on Battlefield 4’s Carrier Assault or Battlefield 2142’s Titan mode would do just as well. Either way, ground and space battles all talking place in one match on one map would be utterly epic.

While Free Radical’s project in particular may never see the light of day, I’m hopeful that DICE’s revamped take on the franchise will deliver on this awesome feature that expands the tradition boundaries of traditional video game warfare to galaxies far, far away.

Battles on a Massive Scale

In Battlefront 2, Pandemic Studios clearly drew a lot of inspiration from Battlefield by offering vehicle and infantry warfare, depicting the massive-scale battles from the Star Wars movies. While old generation consoles suffered in player count, the PC version was able to push those epic 64 player battles. 10 years later, it’s now possible for our consoles to reach similar capabilities, as demonstrated in games like Battlefield 4 on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Star Wars: Battlefront needs to continue to build on the “War” in Star Wars, be it large player counts or even AI enemies and teammates, a la Titanfall, for example.

Also, if we are going to see seamless ground-to-space battles in one map, that’s a lot of space to fill. Much like the films, it’s important to keep the action high and maintain that excitement and spectacle that the movies are so good at portraying.

DICE has a bar to raise, as Pandemic Studios set the standard that made the Battlefront series stand out from your average sci-fi shooter years ago. Let’s make Battlefront the massive next-gen shooter it deserves to be.

Destruction

What’s Star Wars without destruction? From the disastrous landing made by Anakin Skywalker on General Grevious’ flagship Invisible Hand to the battle of the second Deathstar above the moon Endor, it’s clear that destruction would not only just work in the context of Star Wars, it could also change landscapes and environments, much like Battlefield 4’s “Levolution” concept.

Even as a background event, seeing a gigantic Star Destroyer blow up in the skies above the battlefield would be pretty chilling – even better if it came crashing down to the play space, altering a map’s layout. The destruction of a mega cruiser could even act as the reward for succeeding in epic space battles.

Whether it be the collapsing of ice hangars on Hoth or blowing up asteroids in the asteroid fields of Alderran (too soon?), destruction belongs in Battlefront, and DICE is the developer to to do it.

Heroes & Villains

While DICE isn’t aiming to produce a direct sequel to Star Wars: Battlefront 2, it’s clear that they are looking to incorporate elements from the previous two games, as EVP of EA studios Patrick Söderlund mentioned during an EA earning’s call. If you recall, the exciting heroes and villains dynamics of the previous titles let players step out of the boots of a soldier and play as iconic characters from the movies. It was rewarding and allowed us geeks to play out our fantasies to be a Jedi or Bounty hunter, commanding an army of Rebels, Stormtroopers, Clones, or Droids.

But a major question looms: How would DICE allow everyone the fair chance to fill such a role. Will each map or mode have their own prerequisites to complete before a player gets the ability to don the identity of their favorite characters? Regardless, their presence is a must, especially with an ever growing roster of good guys and bad guys that may appear in the new films.

Speaking of new Star Wars films…

A New Era

Star Wars: Battlefront is set to release some time in the summer of 2015, just a few months ahead of the release of the long awaited Episode VII. With this in mind, it’s not out of bounds to think that DICE would build their new Star Wars shooter around an entirely new era inspired by the events to come from the new movie, or perhaps an era pulled out of the expanded universe. Whether we’ll get a full blown demonstration or a classic cliffhanger remains to be revealed. But with that said, it would be nice to play as a new faction with a new story to tell.

What are your wants for Star Wars: Battlefront? (PS. “Better netcode” doesn’t count!) What are you hoping to see at E3 later this month?

A huge thanks to Martin, the Star Wars fans on Reddit and Battlelog, and everyone else who helped fuel the ideas and wants that this Editorial is based on.

Report – Battlefield Hardline Beta in the Works, Footage Leaks [Updated]

Update

IGN is now claiming that a Battlefield Hardline beta is indeed coming to the PlayStation 4, according to “a source” that they are not naming. Make of that what you will, but we’ll likely find out for certain at E3 2014.

Original Story

Recent reports suggest that a Battlefield Hardline beta is in the works at Visceral and that those attending Sony’s “PlayStation E3 Experience,” a North American theater presentation of Sony’s E3 media briefing, will receive access codes in the near future.

“Thank you for attending the PlayStation E3 Experience,” reads an email that was seemingly sent prematurely to one individual who posted its contents on NeoGAF.

“Be one of the first to live out your fantasy as a cop or criminal where you’ll hunt and raid vaults in two new game modes on the High Tension map. Here is your PS4 Access Code to download the Beta.”

Though, no access code was actually provided, leading to the conclusion that the incomplete email was sent by mistake and will likely officially hit the inboxes of participants at a later date.

Similarly, one Reddit user noted that retailer GameStop is awarding a “special bonus” to the first 40 people who pre-order the game, though the sales clerk was unable to dish out any details.

However, it looks like EA’s biggest cause for concern lies not with a suggestive email whisperings at GameStop, but with recently leaked footage of what is allegedly Battlefield Hardline’s beta. The gameplay, that was quickly taken down, showcases a lone player exploring an empty map located in what appears to be down town Los Angeles. AGB-Leaks posted a copy of it here, if you care to see it, though the image quality is rather poor.

As of this writing, Visceral has made no mention of a Battlefield Hardline beta, but considering the history of more recent Battlefield titles, it’s likely we’ll hear news soon.

Keep your eyes and ears open for more on Battlefield Hardline thus June 9, during EA’s E3 2014 media briefing.

GameStop Offers Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo Reach, and Halo 4 Bundle For $18, Spartan Assault Now Free for XBL Gold Members

GameStop is offering Xbox 360 gamers the chance to catch up on an entire generation of Halo games for a decent price.

The retailer is now bundling all four core Halo titles that defined the previous generation of Xbox, including Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo Reach, and Halo 4, as one package for $17.99.

The catch, one could argue, that they all appear to be pre-owned titles, but that’s almost entirely unavoidable this late in the game. So, for hours and hours of both single player and multiplayer experiences with the best Halo games the Xbox 360 has to offer for just under $20, it really isn’t that bad.

If you’re banking on that rumored Halo Remastered Collection on being real, then you might have a worthy excuse to hold off. But still, if you’re brand new to the series and missed out on latest generation of Halo, GameStop’s offer might be a good opportunity to get all caught up. You can visit the store here, if you’re interested.

Either way, you might want to grab a hold of something that will tie you over to the launch of whatever it is that Microsoft and 343 Industries announce during their E3 presentation this year that will supposedly ‘begin our Halo journey’ on Xbox One. Halo hype is certain to rise to an all-time high this summer, as we’re likely to learn more about the upcoming Halo 5: Guardians during E3 as well.

One deal you definitely have no excuse to miss out on, however, is a free digital copy of Halo: Spartan Assault on Xbox One if you are an Xbox Live Gold member. Through Xbox’s “Games with Gold” promotion, you can download the top-down shooter spin-off from the Microsoft store right now for zero dollars, which will then be yours to keep forever, including the Xbox One’s online co-op mode.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Now Available for Pre-Order on PSN, PS4 Will Support Pre-Loading

If you’re ready for Advanced Warfare, you can now pre-order Sledgehammer Games’ upcoming Call of Duty title for the PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 3 on the PSN store.

Both listing have recently appeared on the store; one for the PS4 and one for the PS3. PS4 users will be able to pre-load the game some time a head of its November 4 launch, according to the page, so you can hit the ground running at 12:00am that morning.

It also lists Advanced Warfare’s video output at 1080p on the PS4, but that should come as no surprise as Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Ghosts reached reached a similar mark last year. It goes without saying that Advanced Warfare will also run at 60 frames per second on both of Sony’s consoles.

Thanks, Danial, for the tip!

New “Coming Soon to PlayStation 4” PlanetSide 2 TV Spot

Sony Online Entertainment has released a new TV Spot for PlanetSide 2 that is “Coming Soon to PlayStation 4.”

The game’s release date for the PlayStation 4 is still not set in stone, but it’s possible we’ll learn more at E3 2014. PlanetSide 2 is currently available on the PC. So far, we know it will run at 1080p at a “smooth” frame rate and will be playable at this year’s E3.

We caught our first real shot of the game running on Sony’s platform earlier last month.

Anxious to get your hands on the massive multiplayer shooter on PlayStation 4?

Mortal Kombat X Now Available For Pre-Order, Get a Better Look At Scorpion

Following Mortal Kombat X’s official announcement early yesterday morning, you can now pre-order NetherRealm Studios’ upcoming fighter at select retailers.

The official pre-order page confirms what PlayStation’s official YouTube channel noted in the video description of their upload of the debut trailer, mentioning meaningful character variations and a “fully-connected” gameplay experience.

If the previous titles from NetherRealm Studio are any indication, we can expect Mortal Kombat X’s pre-order bonuses to include costumes for specific characters. However, let’s hope they learned their lesson from previous releases and are not making these bonus specific to certain retailers, as this will require you to purchase multiple copies of the game if you wanted every pre-order bonus available.

The new site update also gives a closer look at everybody’s favorite hell-spawned spectre, Scorpion:

Mortal Kombat X’s first bone-crunching trailer debuted yesterday, hinting at returning features like X-rays special moves from Mortal Kombat 9 and the inclusion of interact-able items from Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Mortal Kombat X is set to launch sometime in the year 2015 for the PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One platforms. It might be noteworthy that Amazon now lists it for a June 30, 2015 release, but it could be placeholder.

Stay tuned to MP1st for more details regarding Mortal Kombat X as it will be showcased next week at E3 2014.

But players between prestige rankings 5 through 10 will definitely want to take note of some of the new Golden Weapons that have been added to the game, including the Golden Knife unlocked at prestige 5, and the Golden PDW unlocked at prestige 10.

Extinction players can also look forward an extended player progression with 5 entirely new Relics and Prestige Ranks to work through.

Battlefield 4 High Frequency Network Update Hitting PC and Next-Gen Consoles, Here’s How It Works

By now, you may have read that a brand new Battlefield 4 game update is hitting all platforms by the end of the week. But by taking a closer look at the patch notes, you’ll notice that it ain’t no ordinary update, at least on the PC and next-gen consoles.

You might have seen something like this on change logs for the PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4:

  • High Frequency Network update
  • Added High frequency “bubble” updating player movement, stance, rotation, damage and projectiles at a separate rate on foot and in vehicles
  • Added option to control client side update rate setting

According to recent write up from DICE, the tweaks mean players playing on these updated servers will notice a bit of an improvement in the game’s “netcode.”

“For the PC, PS4, and Xbox One platforms, we are adding something we nicknamed the ‘High Frequency Bubble,'” the studio wrote.

“Within a certain radius of the player, we add the possibility to update the clients at a higher rate from the server. What this essentially means is that the server will update the client on what is happening more often than before. This normally results in a smoother, more ‘correct’ player experience.”

The option, however, is turned off by default, meaning you’ll have to manually select one of three different level settings; low, medium, or high, within the game’s options menu.

“Most players with a connection faster than 1Mbit should be fine using the HIGH setting,” the explanation continued. “If you experience any issues, lower or turn off the setting completely.”

On the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the update is being rolled out on all 48-player servers and on a small set of 64-player servers. But by the end of the day the update goes live, if the studio monitors a stable experience throughout, all servers will support the new improvements.

On PC, RSPs are responsible for enabling the new features at their discretion, though most are expected to do so as soon as possible.

Lastly, DICE insists that the studio is still hard at work bringing additional updates to network performance that didn’t make it in this time around.

“This is the first release to contain CTE-tested ‘Netcode’ fixes and improvements,” DICE continued. “We are still hard at work with additional improvements and tweaks to better our network experience that did not make this release.”

“We hope to utilize the Community Test Environment for future release to ensure quality and stability across all platforms. If you wish to take part in this testing, the CTE still has slots open. The current requirement is to own a PC copy of Battlefield 4 with a Premium membership to sign up at http://cte.battlelog.com.”

Be sure to check out the official comparison of the old and new servers in DICE’s latest Battlefield 4 video above.

Have you had a change to test out the new update? What’s your verdict? Is it a new-and-improved Battlefield experience?
