Early Unreal Tournament Development Focused on Deathmatch and Team Game Modes, Vehicles and eSports Support in Long Term

Epic Games is taking a drastically different approach to the development of their recently announced return to Unreal Tournament.

Steve Polge, senior programmer and project lead on the new Unreal Tournament, recently spoke to PC Gamer about how the studio intends to manage a completely community-driven development process where aspiring creators will have a direct impact on production of the completely free PC, Mac, and Linux arena shooter.

As for why Epic decided to go this route, “We wanted to bring back Unreal Tournament in collaboration with our passionate fans and mod community,” said Polge. “Community-created content and mods have always played a huge part in the appeal and success of the Unreal Tournament series. With Unreal Engine 4 now available to everyone, we see a unique opportunity to re-invent the competitive FPS.”

Polge went on to give some examples, detailing an open and transparent development process for Unreal Tournament.

“We will have a very open and inclusive process for establishing how the core of Unreal Tournament evolves,” he explained. “We’ll build consensus and make sure the community buys into the direction we establish together. Design questions will be discussed on the forum and in regular Twitch streams, and the decision process will be inclusive and transparent. Players will be able to make their voice heard, and participate meaningfully in setting the direction of development. We will release playable alpha versions and use those to get hands-on feedback from players as well. Epic realizes that we are ultimately responsible for making sure that the core game is awesome and we’ll get there with the contributions of our community.”

Polge then offered up a few more details about the game itself, mentioning that the studio’s initial focus will be on the arena Deathmatch and team game modes before talking about any vehicle-based combat.

“We are focusing first on implementing a polished and updated version of the arena Deathmatch and team game modes. After that, we’d love to work with our community to bring the vehicle-based combat of UT2004 and UT3 to the new Unreal Tournament,” he said.

There was also talk of eSports support, including “advanced match spectating, broadcasting and live streaming,” but nothing planned for the near future, says Polge.

“In the near term, aspiring to be a competitive FPS means making sure we have balanced gameplay mechanics that reward a variety of play styles so that success is primarily determined by skill,” he went on. “Longer term, we’d love to support UT as an eSport game, and we’ll need the community’s help in designing and implementing many of the features that implies, like advanced match spectating, broadcasting and livestreaming.”

Report – Watch Dogs Available For Pre-Download On PS4 In Europe, Will North America Skip Out Again?

Despite both Sony and Ubisoft stating that Watch Dogs would not be available for pre-download, it seems that with the game is indeed available for pre-download over in Europe.

Reports are coming in saying that those who pre-ordered in Europe are able to download the game now.

Reddit user ControllerMartin posted images and a video showing that the game is indeed available for pre-download.

8PJpyeH

[youtube id=”D5WBJX_gG-I”]

This comes as a surprise, as Sony stated that Destiny would be the first title to have pre-download, though this wouldn’t be the first time this has happened. Last year, when Grand Theft Auto 5 launched, the pre-download option was only available in Europe, leaving North American gamers to download the massive title on launch day.

UPDATE 1: It’s likely that the finding is simply a bug in the system, but interestingly, the fact that the game is now rated on this page indicates that users have already downloaded the game, as ratings can only be given after a title is downloaded.

Watch Dogs launches May 27.

UPDATE 2: A notice from PSN confirms that Watch Dogs will only be available for download after 12:01am EST on May 27.

Steam Introduces In-Home Streaming, Play Steam Games on Any PC In Your Home

Today, Steam is introducing a new in-home streaming service that will allow gamers to play games from their Steam library on any PC in their home.

With Steam In-Home Streaming, you can log in to two different computers on the same network and remotely install, launch, and play games as if your were sitting at the remote PC. Video and audio are sent through your home network from your gaming PC to other connected devices in your home. From there, input from your keyboard, mouse, and controller is sent back to the remote computer.

“It all happens in milliseconds,” reads the official update on Steam’s page. “With good hardware and a fast home network, you’ll forget the game is running remotely.”

Here are the simple steps provided to start streaming. They’re really simple, if I didn’t mention it.

  1. Log into Steam in your Windows* PC
  2. Log into Steam on another computer on the same network
  3. Visit your Steam library to start streaming between them

*SteamOS, Linux, and Mac OS X stream hosting coming soon.

Here’s the full feature list:

  • Play your Windows games on devices running other operating systems – Currently Mac OS X, Linux, and SteamOS, with support for more systems coming soon
  • Play your demanding games on lower-end systems – System requirements dictate the rig you’ll need to run your game, but with In-Home Streaming they won’t limit where you can play.
  • Kick back with your laptop or home theater PC – Your Steam games are now available throughout your home when you stream them from your PC to your computer, netbook, laptop, or HTPC.
  • Seamlessly pick up where you left off – Looking for a change of scenery? Steam knows whether your game is already running. Move to another device and start streaming your game right as you left it on your PC.
  • Download once, play anywhere – No need to wait for your game to download again when it’s already installed on one of your home computers

You can get more details on Steam’s official support page.

Happy streaming!

Xbox One June System Update Detailed, Will Allow External Hard Drives

As was hinted last Friday, external hard drive support is coming to Xbox One soon.

How soon you ask? As soon as next month’s Xbox One system update rolls out.

The update will allow any USB 3.0 external hard drive to connect to the Xbox One, as long as it meets the bare minimum of 256 GB of free space. In addition, if you happen to fill up your external hard drive’s memory, additional data will be stored on the Xbox One’s internal hard drive.

The update will also allow players to use real names instead of Gamertags and will also remove the paywall to access apps such as Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube. There are also a number of improvements coming to SmartGlass. You can watch the overview video above and get additional details over on XboxWire.

Is your Xbox One hard drive already full? Getting an external one as soon as the update goes live?

Rumor – Plot Details For Far Cry 4 Leaked

Last week we reported that Far Cry 4 is real and is coming November 18th to North America and November 24th for Europe.

While the Himalayan setting of the game remains vague, it now looks like Ubisoft made a small slip up and accidentally published a more detailed synopsis yesterday. It has since been converted back to the original information given originally, but not before it was copied down by OnlySP.

“Hidden in the majestic Himalayas lies Kyrat, a country steeped in tradition and violence. You are Ajay Ghale. Traveling to Kyrat to fulfill your mother’s dying wish, you find yourself caught up in a civil war to overthrow the oppressive regime of dictator Pagan Min.

Explore and navigate this vast open world, where danger and unpredictability lurk around every corner. Here, every decision counts, and every second is a story. Welcome to Kyrat.”

More than anything, we get the names of the main antagonist, as well as the protagonist, along with his brief back story.

What’s your take on the new information? Are you excited for Far Cry 4? Let us know in the comment section below!

Pre-Load Destiny September 4 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3

Can’t wait to play Destiny and want to get your sweaty little gamer hands on it the moment it launches September 9?

Good news for PlayStation owners: you can now pre-ordered the digital version of Bungie’s upcoming shared-world shooter through the PlayStation Network. In addition, pre-loading will be available starting September 4 on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3, according to the game’s page. That mean’s you’ll be able to start playing Destiny the moment it unlocks at 12:00 am PST on September 9.

Naturally, pre-orderers will get access to Destiny’s beta this July.

You can pre-order Destiny through the PSN on the PS4 here, or the PS3 here.

Interestingly, Destiny’s PS4 page lists its resolution output as 1080p, while the PS3 page lists it at 720p. It’s not clear if those will indeed be the final numbers, as it might be placeholder for the time being.

Meanwhile, have you thought about your character build yet? What’s it going to be? Titan, Warlock, or Hunter?

Halo 5 Boss ‘Annoyed’ With Industry “Insiders” – Breaking Embargoes ‘Doesn’t Require Skill or Insight’

Halo 5 Boss Frank O’Connor isn’t happy with so-called industry “insiders” who’ve been causing headaches for the higher-ups at companies like 343 Industries and Microsoft trying to keep games like the recently announced Halo 5: Guardians a secret.

In a brief aside on a NeoGAF thread hosting discussions on the topic of embargoed information, O’Connor chimed in, saying that individuals like the infamous “CBOAT” who leak embargoed information are a detriment to developers and are often responsible for the spread of misinformation.

“Breaking embargos is not prophesy. Nor does it require any particular skill or insight,” O’Connor wrote. “Ultimately [CBOAT] is taking or being given information and leaking it, illegally and often erroneously. And he isn’t doing it for some noble or worthy reason. He’s doing it for attention.

“People, including nice people with kids and families and stuff, work super hard on this stuff and wake up in the morning to find some of their effort blown up. It’s not fun, and for what? So you can have a mildly interesting surprise 8 hours early and lacking context? Or get hyped or disappointed disproportionately? Or get someone fired or someone innocent yelled at?

“Ok. But it isn’t prophecy, nor ultimately even important. It’s annoying.”

Most recently, Engadget was tipped off with information about an alleged “Halo: The Master Chief Collection,” a rumored collection of remastered Halo titles; Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo 4, coming to Xbox One some time this year. Similar details were outed by the mysterious “ntkrnl” in an older NeoGAF post containing “predictions,” some of which have indeed proven true, including Halo 5 in 2015, a $399 Xbox One model, a Titanfall Xbox One bundle, and more.

What’s your take on leaked information, especially regarding big game announcements? Is it a hindrance to hard-working developers trying to build hype for their project, or, as a reader of video game news, do you prefer getting “insider” info as early as possible, even if unconfirmed?

Tell us in the comments.

Advanced Warfare – Sledgehammer ‘Operates Differently Than Other Call of Duty Studios’

As the third studio to join the fray in Call of Duty’s now three-year development cycle, Sledgehammer Games founders Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey are doing things a little differently this year with Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

From the get-go, since their move from EA and Visceral Games over to rival publisher Activision, the newly formed Sledgehammer Games took a more offbeat approach to Call of Duty development. First up was a third-person action title set in the Vietnam War that Schofield says is “a fresh take on war.” But that project eventually made way for a bigger, more urgent task: co-develop Modern Warfare 3 with Infinity Ward.

Still, though Sledgehammer’s efforts are now focused on yet another first-person Call of Duty title, the way the studio operates is unlike fellow Activision studios Infinity Ward or Treyarch, the duo recently told GameInformer.

“Activision’s independent studio model was, ‘Build the team the way you want to build it. Use the practices that allow you to build great software,'” said Condrey. “It was such a great match, and I think now you’re seeing the fruits of that labor. We’re different than any other Call of Duty studio in terms of how we operate and the culture of our space.”

That team is now made up of fresh talent as well as fellow ex-Dead Space developers, including Don Veca, who won numerous awards for his work on the moody, dynamic sound design of Dead Space. Following suit is creative director Brett Robbins and animation director Christopher Stone, also ex-Visceral developers who worked on the Dead Space franchise.

“It was very, very difficult leaving [Visceral] but this was a great opportunity,” Veca explained. “The thing about Glen and Condrey is that you know they’re not going to fail. That’s the way that I’ve felt when I worked with them on previous games. I saw that in those guys. These guys will take us to the finish line. I have total 100% trust in them.”

We recently learned that Sledgehammer Games has some “incredibly special” show plans for E3 this year, so be on the lookout.

Advanced Warfare hits Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 4.

Sony’s cloud-based streaming service, PlayStation Now, is making its way to the PlayStation 4 after a couple of months of beta testing on the PlayStation 3.

The Basics of Destiny, What You Need to Know – New Video

This two-minute video from Bungie, creators of what’s shaping up to be this generation’s definitive open-world, loot-driven FPS-mixed-with-MMO experience, covers all the essential gameplay elements you can expect of Destiny.

Bungie community manager David Dague, head of community Eric Osborne, and lead designer Lars Bakken walk through some of the basics, like what Destiny is, movement and controls, character abilities, and social experiences. It’s more of a hype-builder than anything, as two minutes isn’t really enough time to paint a proper picture of what Destiny is, nor does it offer new footage, sadly. Nevertheless, it’s always nice hear about what Bungie has in store for gamers this September 9.

For a more in-depth analysis, check out this 14-minute fan-made video that picks apart the smallest details from Destiny’s most recent info blowout. Fans will also get to see much more of the game in action, including competitive multiplayer, at this years E3, just around the corner.

We’ll also get more details on Destiny’s upcoming beta, but we recently learned that it will be taking place this July.

Killzone: Shadow Fall Intercept Co-op DLC Releases June, Later As Standalone Expansion

Teased last week, Guerrilla Games has a new expansion pack for Killzone: Shadow Fall in the works called “Intercept”, which will feature a full four-player co-op mode.

The co-op mode is confirmed to feature four arena maps inspired by locations in the single player. Players are tasked with defending an Uplink from waves of Helghast troops as it’s being hacked. Combat will vary from close-quarters, to mid-range battles.

Whatever the situation is, teamwork is a must as the Helghast have been designed to switch up their tactics, and as detailed by the PSBlog, they will even have the ability to call in special champions that we may be familiar with (RADEC, PLEASE!!).

Additionally, as players are defending the uplink, they will also receive points that get added to their score, which can be used for special unique items such as an artillery strikes or the Jetpack, which makes a return in this expansion.

Below you can see the playable classes that are available in Intercept.

Report – YouTube to Acquire Twitch in $1 Billion Deal

Recent reports suggest Google’s YouTube is striking an over $1 billion deal with Twitch to acquire the popular video game streaming service.

Sources tell Variety that the deal, an all-cash offer, is expected to be announced “imminently” and would be the most significant in the history of YouTube.

Today, Twitch is the most popular and most successful video game streaming service, boasting over 45 million visitors per month and more than 1 million monthly broadcasters. Gamers make use of the service through the official website or via gaming consoles like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, where Twitch’s services recently became available in November and March, respectively, of this year.

Twitch was founded by Justin.tv co-owners Justin Kan and Emmett Shear in June, 2011. Shear currently serves as CEO of Twitch.

Keep an eye out for more details as we await further news.
