Advanced Warfare – Sledgehammer ‘Operates Differently Than Other Call of Duty Studios’

As the third studio to join the fray in Call of Duty’s now three-year development cycle, Sledgehammer Games founders Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey are doing things a little differently this year with Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

From the get-go, since their move from EA and Visceral Games over to rival publisher Activision, the newly formed Sledgehammer Games took a more offbeat approach to Call of Duty development. First up was a third-person action title set in the Vietnam War that Schofield says is “a fresh take on war.” But that project eventually made way for a bigger, more urgent task: co-develop Modern Warfare 3 with Infinity Ward.

Still, though Sledgehammer’s efforts are now focused on yet another first-person Call of Duty title, the way the studio operates is unlike fellow Activision studios Infinity Ward or Treyarch, the duo recently told GameInformer.

“Activision’s independent studio model was, ‘Build the team the way you want to build it. Use the practices that allow you to build great software,'” said Condrey. “It was such a great match, and I think now you’re seeing the fruits of that labor. We’re different than any other Call of Duty studio in terms of how we operate and the culture of our space.”

That team is now made up of fresh talent as well as fellow ex-Dead Space developers, including Don Veca, who won numerous awards for his work on the moody, dynamic sound design of Dead Space. Following suit is creative director Brett Robbins and animation director Christopher Stone, also ex-Visceral developers who worked on the Dead Space franchise.

“It was very, very difficult leaving [Visceral] but this was a great opportunity,” Veca explained. “The thing about Glen and Condrey is that you know they’re not going to fail. That’s the way that I’ve felt when I worked with them on previous games. I saw that in those guys. These guys will take us to the finish line. I have total 100% trust in them.”

We recently learned that Sledgehammer Games has some “incredibly special” show plans for E3 this year, so be on the lookout.

Advanced Warfare hits Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 4.

Killzone: Shadow Fall Intercept Co-op DLC Releases June, Later As Standalone Expansion

Teased last week, Guerrilla Games has a new expansion pack for Killzone: Shadow Fall in the works called “Intercept”, which will feature a full four-player co-op mode.

The co-op mode is confirmed to feature four arena maps inspired by locations in the single player. Players are tasked with defending an Uplink from waves of Helghast troops as it’s being hacked. Combat will vary from close-quarters, to mid-range battles.

Whatever the situation is, teamwork is a must as the Helghast have been designed to switch up their tactics, and as detailed by the PSBlog, they will even have the ability to call in special champions that we may be familiar with (RADEC, PLEASE!!).

Additionally, as players are defending the uplink, they will also receive points that get added to their score, which can be used for special unique items such as an artillery strikes or the Jetpack, which makes a return in this expansion.

Below you can see the playable classes that are available in Intercept.

Halo 5: Guardians on Xbox One ‘Allows For Things We’ve Never Done Before,’ Says 343 Industries

Mass speculation surrounds the recent announcement of Halo 5: Guardians. Where does the story lead? Where does developer 343 Industries go from here?

According to 343i general manager Bonnie Ross, gamers will have the chance to discover exactly that over the course of multiple upcoming Halo titles.

Ross reiterated to The Guardian that Halo 5: Guardians is part of a story that the studio plans to tell over multiple games. “Just as with past titles, we’re being really open about the fact that we want to tell this story over more than one game – this is about Master Chief’s journey: it’s about his past and his future,” she said.

Obviously, Ross wasn’t quite able to dive into any details so soon after the game’s surprising announcement last Friday morning. But she explained how the studio is taking everything they’ve learned from Halo 4 and is applying that knowledge to their upcoming Halo project while taking full advantage of the Xbox One’s hardware.

“We learned a ton from Halo 4, and having the abilities we have with Xbox One… it has opened up doors on things we could never have done before,” she said. “We’re very excited but we can’t talk about any of it.”

“Any time you have a platform launch, it’s an opportunity to take a step back and think more broadly. For us, it’s almost a blank canvas. What are the stories we want to tell, how do we want to tell them, how do we use Halo to push the new platform?

“It’s also a time to listen to our fans and take their feedback on what’s important to them going forward. It’s about how do we start and where do we go on Xbox One?”

Keep your sights on MP1st for more on Halo 5: Guardians.

Star Citizen – Arena Commander Launches End of May With Single Player and Multiplayer Modes

Cloud Imperium Games has announced today that the studio plans to launch Star Citizen‘s Arena Commander mode roughly two weeks from now, on May 29.

Arena Commander, was first unveiled at PAX East last month, where the studio showed off what dogfighting in an astroid field actually looks like in Star Citizen. You can watch the demo here, if you missed it.

Backers of the crowd-funded space flight simulator will get access to two single player modes, as well the multiplayer mode when Arena Commander officially launches at the end of this month.

“The goal is that every backer will have access to the single player ‘Free Flight’ and ‘Vanduul Swarm’ games modes on this day, and the very first batch of multiplayer testers will get access to the game’s multiplayer game modes,” studio head Chris Roberts writes in a recent letter. “We will scale up the multiplayer as quickly as possible starting on that date, increasing the number of players as it is stable and stopping to fix bugs where needed.”

Roberts says the studio hasn’t been able to nail down a date until now due to Star Citizen’s difficult development process and the complexity of the project. “At this point, we’re close enough that we feel fairly confident in this date… but the next two weeks will be a march,” he says.

You can get more details of the process leading up to the release of Arena Commander in Roberts’ official letter.

New 1080p Driveclub Gameplay Exhibits The Lush Forests of Canada

It’s hard for us to express just how enchanting the lush, green forests up here in Canada really are, but Evolution Studios does a pretty good job with this new high-definition footage of Driveclub captured on the PlayStation 4 in 1080p.

Watch the Pagani Huayra tear up the track in the Cayoosh region of British Columbia, which happens to be just North of MP1st’s headquarters here in Vancouver.

According to the Global Product Manager at Sony, the driver behind the wheel in the video above, there are over 1 million trees in this particular track.

Evolution Studios recently outlined the differences between Driveclub’s free PlayStation Plus Edition and standard disc version, which both launch on PlayStation 4 on October 7. You can get the details here.

New Titanfall Game Modes In The Works, Respawn Explains Recent Playlist Updates on PC

Following the launch of Titanfall Expedition DLC and Game Update 3 on the Xbox One and PC just yesterday, developer Respawn Entertainment is continuing support with various playlist updates to both versions of the game.

Many PC users will have noticed the removal of the Capture the Flag and Pilot Hunter game modes from playlists yesterday, which the studio says is attributed to insufficient player counts and interest in the game types. However, new game modes are in the works that the studio hopes offer will exciting alternatives. Both CTF and Pilot Hunter will remain in rotating playlists, Respawn says. No modes will be removed from Private Matches, however.

Here’s the letter from the studio written on Titanfall’s official website.

Yesterday we removed CTF and Pilot Hunter as separate playlists in the PC version of Titanfall. This has generated a lot of discussion with the PC community and we’d like to like to address your issues as openly as possible. We have an amazing and large PC audience with the vast majority of users predominantly playing Attrition and Hardpoints game modes. CTF and Pilot Hunter have not been widely used modes on the PC version. Players trying to access these modes had overlong wait times to find other users and it was making for a poor experience. We want to make sure that not only is there compelling content in the playlists we offer, but that the experience of joining a match works well. We’re tracking what playlists players are choosing, and we’re going to continue to look at unpopular playlists and add new ones on both platforms.

We’re currently working on those new modes and updates and can’t wait to share the details with you. We will still rotate Pilot Hunter and CTF in for future playlists as well as adding new riffs on game types that Respawn is currently working on. Our goal is to have a wide variety of playlists that are popular and changing. That said, we will not remove modes from Private Matches, so there will always be the option to select them for competitive and personal play. Thanks for your understanding as we try to make Titanfall a better experience for everyone.

On a side note, how is everyone enjoying the new maps from Titanfall’s Expedition DLC?

First Official Screenshot of PlanetSide 2 Running on PS4, More Updates To Come After E3 Showing

Announced just last year, Sony Online Entertainment is finally getting ready to show off the PlayStation 4 version of PlanetSide 2 at this year’s E3.

While the expo is just one month away, SOE ‎Executive Produce Clint Worley has given us the very first glimpse of the game running on the PS4.

Stating that this is the most recent build, Clint tweeted out a screenshot (or rather a photo) that he took showing the game running on Sony’s console. You can also see the PS Vita sitting right next to the PS4, which we already know has the ability to stream the game. Though, no further details have been stated whether or not it’ll get a companion app or possibly be used as a second screen.

He also re-confirmed that the game will be running at 1080P.

We can also expect to see more updates as E3 approaches.

Rumor – Remastered Halo Collection Could Come To The Xbox One This Year

With the recent announcement of Halo 5: Guardians coming to Xbox One in 2015, the hype for next-gen Master Chief grows and it looks like it’s just getting bigger.

As Endgadget reports, Microsoft is working with a currently unknown developer to bring “Halo: The Master Chief Collection” – a next-gen upgrade of the franchise that includes Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo 4 – to the Xbox One some time this year. Fillers Halo: ODST and Halo: Reach might not be included, considering that they don’t feature the legendary Spartan, but it’s not certain.

It’s speculated that Sabre Interactive, who tackled Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and who is currently said to be working on an unannounced Xbox One project, may be heading up this rumored next-gen Halo collection. The reports also fall in line with an older NeoGAF post by “ntkrnl” who had much to say about these new Halo projects.

Whether Microsoft is in the process of this remains to be seen, but earlier statements from then Vice-president Phil Spencer suggest that it could be part of his plan to deliver even more Halo.

Microsoft Developer Teases Xbox One External Hard Drive

This week has certainly been interesting for Microsoft and potential Xbox One owners after the company announced a cheaper Xbox One model without the Kinect bundled in.

Now, it looks like we can now chalk up another highly requested feature for the Xbox One to be added soon, as an anonymous Xbox One developer recently took to Reddit to tease the following:

1gggt0u

From the looks of that image, it appears that Microsoft is set to reveal an external hard drive device for the Xbox One sometime in the near future.

It follows Larry Hyrb’s previous statement a few weeks ago when he mentioned an Xbox One external hard drive would be released “soon”. Unfortunately, aside from the teaser image above, no additional details were given. We’ll likely hear something during or before E3 this year.

Will you pick up an external hard drive for your Xbox One?

Halo 5: Guardians Continues Master Chief’s Journey in 2015

Microsoft and 343 Industries announced earlier today that Halo 5: Guardians will be releasing on Xbox One in 2015.

Bonnie Ross, GM of 343 Industries, expressed her excitement in this morning’s announcement:

“Halo 5: Guardians” is a bigger effort than “Halo 4.”  That applies to the content and scope of the game, as well as the technology in what’s now a brand new and more powerful engine.  Certainly there are some core elements carried over from prior games, but we’ve invested a huge effort in retooling our tech to take full advantage of the Xbox One’s hardware and ecosystem to create worlds and experiences worthy of next-gen.

It’s a game that will hopefully demonstrate the talent, learnings and abilities of the 343 Industries team. A game that will incorporate the things we learned from “Halo 4” about technology, aesthetics, performance and scale – and perhaps more importantly, understanding and embracing a community of gamers who love what lies at the heart of this game, and the limitless potential of the “Halo” universe.”

Ross also noted that while Master Chief’s journey will continue in 2015, the players journey will definitely begin sometime in 2014 with a “giant leap”. Could this be referencing the previously rumored Halo 2 Anniversary?

Keep your sights set on MP1st as more information unfolds.

Update

343 Industries has also posted a blog update which includes new concept art and wallpapers. In the post, Frank O’ Connor reiterates achieving 60FPS and dedicated servers as important goals — both of which were announced last year — while once again emphasizing a desire to “push the ecosystem as well as the universe”. Check out the concept art below:
