Xbox One Controller-Friendly Interface Update Inbound, Microsoft Not Shaken By PS4 Sales

Relying so heavily on voice and gesture-activated commands, how will the Xbox One’s user interface adapt to Microsoft’s new $100 cheaper Kinect-less Xbox One model that the company plans to start shipping early June?

While it’s not impossible to navigate Xbox One’s menus using a controller, it’s not clear how Microsoft plans to fill the void and provide adopters of the new model the same sort of ease-of-use Kinect users benefit from.

One way is to put the control back into the controller, says Xbox marketing lead Yusuf Mehdi.

“We do want to find ways to give you some of those shortcuts and make some of the things that we have with Kinect easier with the controller,” Mehdi told Engadget. “You can expect to see us do a bunch of things over the coming months to make the experience easier and easier, even if you don’t have a Kinect.”

Though the studio is “still kind of working through that,” Xbox one users can expect some of the new interface upgrades to take effect some time around E3 2014, he said.

Meanwhile, Mehdi explained to Polygon that the decision to separate Kinect from Xbox had more to do with the current adoption rate of Xbox 360 owners than it did with Sony’s impressive PlayStation 4 sales numbers. “We have over 80 million people who have yet to buy Xbox One,” he said.

“We have been working with our developers and game publisher partners for awhile trying to balance two goals,” Mehdi added. “One is the accessibility of the Kinect and the other is the desire for customers to onboard to Xbox One. They want both, a large audience of users and the best features.

“We feel this vision is balance the best of those goals.”

We expect to hear more about the Head of Xbox’s new “gaming first” approach to Microsoft’s next-gen console and the fate of Kinect at this year’s E3.

Watch Dogs Goes Gold, In Development For Over 5 Years

With no more delays in Watch Dogs‘ foreseeable future, the landing gear is out as Ubisoft approaches the release one of the studio’s biggest titles to date.

In development for five years and a half, according to the studio’s most recent Ubiblog entry, the open-world, action-espionage shooter has officially gone gold is all set to hit PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC only a few days away on May 27.

It’s exciting to be gold,” says Creative Director Jonathan Morin. “But it’ll be more exciting when people are playing. For the fans it means that it’s true. It means there will be no such thing as another delay. But for us, it’s not done until they actually have it in their hands.”

We’re pretty excited to test run the full capabilities of Watch Dogs’ online experience and how it seamlessly integrates with with single player story. If you haven’t yet, be sure to check out this 9-minute gameplay multiplayer demonstration.

Yesterday, we learned that Watch Dogs will run at a 900p resolution on the PlayStation 4, while hitting 792p on the Xbox One. Both will run at 30 frames per second.

What’s your take on Watch Dogs so far? Are you going to be picking up a copy for yourself on May 27?

Borderlands 2 Has Shipped 9 Million Units, Highest Selling 2K Title to Date

Yesterday’s Take-Two earnings report brought to light some interesting news of a next-gen title in development at Rockstar Games, set to launch sometime within the fiscal year.

The earning report also outed some good news for the Borderlands franchise, specifically for Borderlands 2, which released back in September 2012. During the call, it was revealed that the title has shipped 9 million copies to date, up from the 8.5 million units shipped in the third quarter report. This also makes Borderlands 2 the highest selling 2K title to date.

In addition, Borderlands 2 was also recently released on the PlayStation Vita, though the general consensus of the game has been less than stellar.

A new instalment in the franchise, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, is set to arrive sometime this Fall for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Killzone: Shadow Fall Canyon Map Now Available, Devs Tease New Announcement In Two Days

Teased just last week, the new multiplayer map titled “Canyon” is now available for free for Killzone: Shadow Fall players.

In order to access the free DLC, you’ll need to visit the PlayStation Store on the PlayStation 4 and download the “Killzone: Shadow Fall Map Pack”. It weights in at about 1.8GB, though if you have already downloaded the previous two maps, it will only be about 600MB for Canyon.

This isn’t the only surprise that Killzone players are getting, as the official Killzone twitter tweeted today about an announcement occurring in two days.

No details on what it could be, but through pure speculation it may be tied to the co-op mode the team said that they would be doing sometimes after launch. We only come to this conclusion as multiple devs from Guerrilla Games have tweeted out this announcement, each with their own character class (all of which are only ISA), possibly suggesting that it’s a co-op announcement.

What do you guys think it might be?

Battlefield 4 Dragon’s Teeth DLC – A Closer Look at the Desert Eagle and Unica 6 Magnum

Battlefield 4 YouTube personality Xfactor takes a closer look at some of the snazzy new handguns arriving with the launch of Battlefield 4’s Dragon’s Teeth DLC some time in the near future.

One of the most familiar and most iconic first-person shooter weapons of all time, the Desert Eagle, at last makes an appearance in Battlefield 4, along with the new Unica 6 Magnum. Both will be unlockable through Dragon’s Teeth’s various achievements.

As Xfactor mentions in his video, much can change between now and Dragon’s Teeth’s actual release, but it’s nice to get an in-depth look at some of these cool new weapons ahead of time, nevertheless. Similarly, YouTuber JackFrags did a similar video showing off the other weapons and gadgets of Dragon’s Teeth. Check it out here.

We got our first official screen of Dragon’s Teeth earlier today and are told we’ll be seeing more of the DLC in action later this week. Keep your sights on MP1st!

Excited to get your hands on the Desert Eagle? Or, perhaps your more of an old-fashioned six-shooter kind of gamer?

Take Two Confirms Next-Gen Rockstar Project, Due This Fiscal Year

During their quarterly earning meeting, Take-Two, parent company of Rockstar Games, confirmed that Rockstar is working on a next-gen project for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and that it’s schedule to release this some time this fiscal year.

To clarify, that time frame could extend all the way to Spring of next calendar year, 2015.

No details were given as to what the project might be, but we presume it could be a next-gen port of Grand Theft Auto 5, something that has been rumored for quite some time now.

You’ll be able to listen to the meeting, once the recording goes live.

Any thoughts as to what it could be?

Creative Director Settles Watch Dogs Resolution and Frame Rate on Next-Gen

The numbers are in. Ubisoft creative director Jonathan Morin settles the resolution and frame rate capabilities of Watch Dogs on next-gen consoles.

Confusion ensued after Sony mistakenly posted and then removed incorrect information about Watch Dogs’ resolution and frame rate on their official website a few days ago. Today, Morin clears things up in a recent post on the official Ubiblog, saying that Watch Dogs development has always been about delivering on next-gen experiences, rather than “defining what technology can do.”

Morin explains that Watch Dogs will run on the PlayStation 4 at 900p and the Xbox One at 720p CORRECTION: 792p. Both versions will run at 30 frames per second.

Despite the extra development time granted by Watch Dogs’ delay, Morin says the studio’s goal was never to simply push a few more pixels onto a screen.

“Resolution is a number, just like framerate is a number. All those numbers are valid aspects of making games,” he says. “But you make choices about the experience you want to deliver. In our case, dynamism is everything. Exploration and expression are everything. You want to have a steady framerate, but you want to have dynamism at the core of the experience. The same goes with resolution. People tend to look at corridor shooters, for example, where there’s a corridor and all the effects are on and it’s unbelievable, and they forget that if you apply those same global effects to an open city with people around and potential car crashes and guys in multiplayer showing up without warning, the same effect is applied to a lot of dynamic elements that are happening in every frame. So it becomes magnified in cost.”

In related news, GameStop has outed a new trailer for Watch Dogs’ pre-order bonus content. Check it out below:

EA ‘Investigating Community-Supported Options’ To Keep GameSpy Shutdown-Affected Titles Online

EA has issued an official update regarding yesterday’s announcement that the company would no longer be able to support a number of titles affected by the GameSpy shut down.

“Since GameSpy’s announcement, our teams have been working to evaluate options to keep services up and running,” EA writes in a recent news update.

“Unfortunately, due to technical challenges and concerns about the player experience, we do not have a solution at this time. Online services for EA games on the GameSpy platform will be closed down at the end of June.”

The company also writes that they are “investigating community-supported options” to keep some of their multiplayer-focused titles alive and kicking, but have nothing to announce at the moment.

“We know some of these games are still fan favorites, including Battlefield 2, Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Command & Conquer games. We are still investigating community-supported options to preserve online functionality for these titles, such as multiplayer. Significant technical hurdles remain, and at this time we don’t have anything to announce.”

Meanwhile, we caught wind of reports that the Battlefield 2 mod, Project Reality, will survive the shutdown, as its creators have taken action to replace GameSpy’s hosting services.

Project manager “AncientMan” wrote this statement on the official forums:

“We’ve already developed our own master server, and it’s running quite nicely, replacing the services that GameSpy hosted. FH2 contacted us and they will be using our servers as well, so they’re fine too. After a bit of testing has occurred, this will be going out with v1.2, which will obviously be released before this shutdown occurs.

“For you regular player folk, the only thing you’ll notice about the whole situation is when updating to 1.2, you’ll get a message box saying some stuff, your profiles will be deleted, and you’ll be prompted to make a new profile. From there, it’s business as usual.”

There may be hope yet for those still enjoying some of those classic Battlefield titles and other EA games. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as we hear more.

With Advanced Warfare, the studio aims to deliver on that familiar Call of Duty experience while putting their own spin on things.

“We really look closely at a lot of different things,” Senior development director Aaron Halon told GameInformer. “The pacing is different, things that are – there’s very core things that Call of Duty [does] that won’t change: 60 frames per second, the moments and things in it that are very memorable in the game. But our take on it – our spin on it is different.”

Sledgehammer co-founder Michael Condrey explained, “Yeah, we’re really looking forward to sharing more because we think we have some meaningful way to make this franchise feel like it’s got its Sledgehammer mark on it.” Fellow co-founder Glen Schofield expressed his appreciation for the sort of creative freedom the studio was handed while taking on the project. “We approached this like we would any new IP,” he said. “I mean, this has been one heck of a creative challenge. I mean, everything is brand new in the game.”

As Schofield said earlier, Advanced Warfare will bring “some pretty big experiments to the core mechanics that’ll effect multiplayer and every mode of the game.”

Later in the interview, GameInformer asked Halon what sort of message the development team might have for fans worried about the introduction of a new studio in the Call of Duty development cycle.

“Don’t worry about it,” he responded. “I mean, look, again, we’re fans. We’re really scrutinizing what we’re doing ourselves and can’t wait to show the stuff off.”

It will be an agonizing wait to find out this November 4 when Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare hits Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
