EA ‘Investigating Community-Supported Options’ To Keep GameSpy Shutdown-Affected Titles Online

EA has issued an official update regarding yesterday’s announcement that the company would no longer be able to support a number of titles affected by the GameSpy shut down.

“Since GameSpy’s announcement, our teams have been working to evaluate options to keep services up and running,” EA writes in a recent news update.

“Unfortunately, due to technical challenges and concerns about the player experience, we do not have a solution at this time. Online services for EA games on the GameSpy platform will be closed down at the end of June.”

The company also writes that they are “investigating community-supported options” to keep some of their multiplayer-focused titles alive and kicking, but have nothing to announce at the moment.

“We know some of these games are still fan favorites, including Battlefield 2, Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Command & Conquer games. We are still investigating community-supported options to preserve online functionality for these titles, such as multiplayer. Significant technical hurdles remain, and at this time we don’t have anything to announce.”

Meanwhile, we caught wind of reports that the Battlefield 2 mod, Project Reality, will survive the shutdown, as its creators have taken action to replace GameSpy’s hosting services.

Project manager “AncientMan” wrote this statement on the official forums:

“We’ve already developed our own master server, and it’s running quite nicely, replacing the services that GameSpy hosted. FH2 contacted us and they will be using our servers as well, so they’re fine too. After a bit of testing has occurred, this will be going out with v1.2, which will obviously be released before this shutdown occurs.

“For you regular player folk, the only thing you’ll notice about the whole situation is when updating to 1.2, you’ll get a message box saying some stuff, your profiles will be deleted, and you’ll be prompted to make a new profile. From there, it’s business as usual.”

There may be hope yet for those still enjoying some of those classic Battlefield titles and other EA games. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as we hear more.

Advanced Warfare Dev Says “Don’t Worry” About Sledgehammer’s Take on Call of Duty – Interview

The pressure is on for Sledgehammer Games as they take on development responsibilities for the next entry in the mega-popular shooter series, Call of Duty.

With Advanced Warfare, the studio aims to deliver on that familiar Call of Duty experience while putting their own spin on things.

“We really look closely at a lot of different things,” Senior development director Aaron Halon told GameInformer. “The pacing is different, things that are – there’s very core things that Call of Duty [does] that won’t change: 60 frames per second, the moments and things in it that are very memorable in the game. But our take on it – our spin on it is different.”

Sledgehammer co-founder Michael Condrey explained, “Yeah, we’re really looking forward to sharing more because we think we have some meaningful way to make this franchise feel like it’s got its Sledgehammer mark on it.” Fellow co-founder Glen Schofield expressed his appreciation for the sort of creative freedom the studio was handed while taking on the project. “We approached this like we would any new IP,” he said. “I mean, this has been one heck of a creative challenge. I mean, everything is brand new in the game.”

As Schofield said earlier, Advanced Warfare will bring “some pretty big experiments to the core mechanics that’ll effect multiplayer and every mode of the game.”

Later in the interview, GameInformer asked Halon what sort of message the development team might have for fans worried about the introduction of a new studio in the Call of Duty development cycle.

“Don’t worry about it,” he responded. “I mean, look, again, we’re fans. We’re really scrutinizing what we’re doing ourselves and can’t wait to show the stuff off.”

It will be an agonizing wait to find out this November 4 when Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare hits Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Be sure to check out the entire interview with GameInformer where the studio dives into details on the development process behind Advanced Warfare.

Are you optimistic about Sledgehammer’s take on Call of Duty, or do you have your doubts? Let us know in the comments.

Titanfall Patch Details, Custom Loadout Names, FPS Cap Increase, Balance Tweaks, and More

Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment has outed a ton of details on the shooter’s upcoming game update.

It’s a hefty one that includes new features like custom loadout names, private match improvements, a frame rate capacity increase for PC players, and much more. You’ll also see a number of balance tweaks and bug fixes.

No release date was specified, but it’s likely the update will hit Xbox One and PC during or before Expedition DLC‘s launch. As was detailed previously, the Xbox 360 game update will undoubtedly follow behind at a later date.

Meanwhile, catch all the details below for Titanfall’s Game Update 3, as seen on the official Titanfall website:

NEW FEATURES (All Platforms)

Custom load-out names

You can now name your custom loadouts for both your Pilot and your Titan.

2 dedicated Custom Loadouts per game mode

Each of these 2 loadouts become unlocked after playing the game mode 5 and 10 times respectively. These loadouts are only available in the game mode they are listed under. In a Private Lobby, all game mode loadouts can be customized. In a match lobby you can only customize the loadouts for the game mode about to be played.

Last Game Summary improvements:

  • Now shows the last game’s scoreboard so you can view it from the lobby after the match.
  • Now allows you to filter which challenges are displayed. You can toggle between “Most Progress Made” which was the original behavior, “Completed”, or “Almost Complete”
  • Challenges in the last game summary screen now show the reward the challenge will give when highlighted.

Custom Private Match Settings (Beta)

We’ve added the first round of Custom Match Settings to the Private Match mode, so you can tweak the games you set up for friends and tournaments. More are coming and feedback is welcome. Options include:

  • Score Limit
  • Time Limit
  • AI Lethality – Controls how tough and accurate Grunts and Spectres are.
  • AI Types – Sets the allowed types of AI from drop pods and drop ships.
  • Pilot Health – Gives pilots half, normal, or double health.
  • Pilot Ammo – Gives pilots normal or reduced ammo.
  • Titan First Build Time – Adjusts how long until players acquire their first titan.
  • Titan Rebuild Time – Adjusts how long until players’ replacement titans are ready.
  • Titan Shield Capacity – Normal, half, double, or disabled.
  • Minimap – Turns the HUD minimap on or off.
  • Respawn Delay – How long players must wait before spawning in again.

Extra Look Drift Guard

We added a new “High” setting to the “Look Drift Guard” controller option. This is useful for players experiencing and being bothered by view drift on their controllers. Players who prefer the original behavior should set this to “low”.

Level Stats

We added a new menu under “Personal Stats” showing statistics per map such as how many times you have played each game mode, or won each game mode. This allows players to easily track the achievement “I’ve Seen It All” requiring that you play each mode and every map.

Campaign MP

The campaign menu now shows a small trophy icon for each faction for every level that you have won. This will allow easier tracking of which campaign levels you have won for the achievements “Militia Elite Pilot” and “IMC Elite Pilot”.

Regen Challenges

We found that some players erroneously believed that the requirement challenges for Regen only became available when they reached level 50. Now, when Regen challenges become available, they are marked as “new” with an exclamation point, so players know they can start progressing on the Regen Requirements.

Amped Weapon pickup distinction

The pickup prompt for Amped Weapons dropped by other players will now show up in orange text.

Scoreboard Icons

We have added two new scoreboard icons to provide additional awareness during play. One is an icon that indicates that a dead player’s Auto-Titan is still alive. The other is an icon to differentiate players who have successfully evacuated during the Epilogue.

NEW FEATURES (PC)

Extreme frame-rate support

The game now supports refresh-rates up to 144fps.

Audio Installer

The audio file installation step is much faster. No more long wait times.

Scoreboard Controls

Added bindings to mute players from the in-game scoreboard. Defaults: Page Up / Page Down to select, Delete to toggle mute, Enter to view profile.

NEW FEATURES (X1)

New chat icon

Added an icon to the scoreboard and lobby screens to show when a player is in Xbox party chat and therefore not part of the game voice chat.

GAME BALANCE CHANGES

Match win/loss credit

Players are now rewarded win/loss credit at the moment of Victory/Defeat, rather than after the post-game scoreboard period. You also now receive a loss if you leave a match before a winner is determined. Previously you received neither a win nor a loss if you quit before the post-game scoreboard.

Normal Eject

Damage and area of effect has been decreased. Previously, a normal Titan eject caused damage over an unintentionally large area of effect, slightly larger than the circle outlining the statue in Corporate. This has been reduced, and the damage has been reduced as well. This brings the effect in-line with the ejection visual FX. The original intent of the eject explosion damage was to reward an ejecting pilot for accurately anticipating or baiting an enemy Titan into an execution attempt, but the size of the explosion made this too easy.

Nuclear Eject

Now does more damage against Titans. Previously an Atlas with full health could survive a close range Nuclear Ejection. Given the long “tell” that Nuclear Eject has, we decided it is appropriate for it to decimate Titans that are within the blast radius.

Build time

Shooting enemy mega turrets or evacuation drop-ships now rewards you with Titan Build Time or Titan Core Charge Time. You do not get build time for the regular drop ships because they do not hover long enough to make destroying them a reasonable or gameplay-meaningful player objective.

Dome shield

  • You can no longer knock a Titan out of its dome shield with Titan melee.
  • No longer tries to do damage to other Titans if they are in their own dome shield. Previously there were circumstances where this could result in a Titan unintentionally taking damage.
  • Now protects Titans against nearby Titanfall splash damage.

Emp effects

No longer mess up your screen while you are inside dome shield.

MVP

Killing the other team’s MVP now gets you 25 points.

CTF Assist points

Players are now awarded Capture the Flag assist points. If you help carry a flag back to base you will receive 100 points as long as the flag was never returned by the other team between you possessing it and your teammate capturing it.

Titanfalls

Disabled Titanfall near the evacuation location and stopped Titanfall from doing damage to the drop-ship. Dropping your Titan on the evacuation ship was not an intended behavior.

BUG FIXES (All Platforms)

  • Improved next game map and mode selection, so the chance of replaying the same map or mode as the last game should be very rare.
  • Fixed NPCs not cycling between locations while defending Hardpoints in Hardpoint Domination.
  • Fixed Bish / Blisk erroneously broadcasting the capture status of a Hardpoint to players that were out of range.
  • Fixed an audio issue where notification dialogue from the Player’s Titan might unintentionally be cut short or fail to play.
  • Reduced accidental pilot ability activations from pressing ‘A’ to respawn when using the “Bumper Jumper” controller config.
  • Fixed case where a pilot is rodeoing a Titan, and the Titan pilot ejects and collides with the rodeo’er, resulting in one or both pilots falling abruptly to the ground.
  • Fixed unintentional death that resulted from ejecting out of an out of bounds trigger.
  • Fixed case where Titan firing weapon while auto-ejecting will cause cloak to cancel.
  • Fixed cases where a rodeo’ing player or ejecting Titan pilot can become stuck in a solid object.
  • Fixed case in Rise where your Titan would teleport inside a building after you embark.
  • Fixed places where a Titan could be unintentionally dropped.
  • The Kill Card (the information about what killed you or your Titan) now shows up if you have Auto Eject. Previously it did not.
  • Arc Cannon rumble will no longer continue if you disembark while charging the weapon.
  • Arc Cannon idle effects will now properly play in all circumstances.
  • Pilot weapons will no longer disappear inside the Evacuation drop-ship.
  • Fixed a bug where the count on score splashes could be incorrect if the same event had different XP values.
  • Kill Cards will now always display the attacker’s remaining health. It previously could be pushed off by excessively long names.
  • Improved the sounds associated with Electric Smoke to increase awareness for the attacker and victims.
  • The Titan VO will no longer incorrectly say you’re outnumbered when allies are nearby.
  • The missile from the Amped Archer will now play proper whiz-by and impact sounds.
  • Improved the sound when Auto-Titans use the XO-16 with the accelerator mod.
  • Fixed several crashes.
  • Fixed burn cards being awarded during private match. This was not the intended behavior.
  • Fixed some weapon and mod names not displaying properly in the weapons menu.
  • Fixed private match showing XP after a match even though no XP was earned.
  • Grenades will now drop if you’re killed before throwing them.
  • Fixed a case where AI could be briefly frozen in place.
  • Fixed case of multiple Titan drops happening on the same spot at the same time.
  • Further reduced the bandwidth used when connecting to a server, for improved load times.
  • Improved the view-kick effect when firing the B3 Wingman. Damage and behavior have not changed.
  • When you are killed by a Titan execution, you will now be treated to a kill replay that begins about 5 seconds earlier than it previously did, which helps you better understand what were the circumstances of your death.

BUG FIXES (PC)

  • Fixed an issue where the “Emitter Limit” audio option was not being saved.
  • The “Master Volume” slider no longer affects voice chat volume so they can now be tuned separately.

BUG FIXES (Xbox One)

  • Players will no longer have a microphone icon if they do not have a headset plugged in.

Rumor – Battlefield 4 Dragon’s Teeth DLC Map Names Outed, More Details on “Chainlink”

More Battlefield 4 Dragon’s Teeth DLC details surface as members of the Battlefield community continue to scour game files for information.

Users Wirrew and HattiWatt1 have both been spot on with previously leaked information, giving us our first look at the DLC’s new weapons and gadgets. Now, it appears they have discovered map names, as well as more details on the rumored game mode, “Chainlink,” that was spotted in the list of Dragon’s Teeth assignments earlier.

According to HattiWatt1’s findings, the possible final names for Dragon’s Teeth four new multiplayer maps are Sunken Dragon, Propaganda, Pearl Market, and Lumphini Garden.

Sunken Dragon and Propaganda don’t really seems to indicate any specific setting, but a quick Google search for Pearl Market and Lumphini Garden bring up locations in Beijing, China and Bangkok, Thailand, respectively.

Additionally, Wirrew has pointed out that Chainlink is a new Conquest-style game mode that rewards the team that can link adjacent capture points. The more that are controlled, the more the enemy’s tickets bleed.

Luckily, we won’t have to wait too long before finding out how accurate the information is, as developer DICE is set to give fans a first look at Dragon’s Teeth next week.

EA To Shut Down Battlefield 1942, Battlefield 2, and Battlefield 2142 Online Services on June 30

On June 30, Electronic Arts will be shutting down online services for a number of video game titles that the publisher deems unfit for continued support.

This includes classic, fan-favorite Battlefield titles like Battlefield 1942, Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, and Battlefield Vietnam, as well as entries in other franchises like Crysis, Command & Conquer, Medal of Honor, and more.

The company wrote this statement on their official website:

“The decisions to retire older EA games are never easy.  The development teams and operational staff pour their hearts into these games almost as much as the customers playing them and it is hard to see one retired.  But as games get replaced with newer titles, the number of players still enjoying the older games dwindles to a level — typically fewer than 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles — where it’s no longer feasible to continue the behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping these games up and running. We would rather our hard-working engineering and IT staff focus on keeping a positive experience for the other 99% of customers playing our more popular games.  We hope you have gotten many hours of enjoyment out of the games and we appreciate your ongoing patronage.”

Some of the notable titles affected include:

  • Battlefield 1942 for PC and Mac (including The Road to Rome and Secret Weapons of WW2 expansions)
  • Battlefield 2 for PC (including Special Forces expansion)
  • Battlefield 2: Modern Combat for PlayStation 2
  • Battlefield 2142 for PC and Mac (including Northern Strike expansion)
  • Battlefield Vietnam for PC
  • Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars for PC and Mac (including Kane’s Wrath expansion)
  • Command & Conquer: Generals for PC and Mac (including Zero Hour expansion)
  • Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 for PC and Mac
  • Crysis 2 for PC
  • Crysis for PC
  • Crysis Wars for PC
  • Medal of Honor: Allied Assault for PC and Mac (including Breakthrough and Spearhead expansions)
  • Star Wars: Battlefront for PC and PlayStation 2
  • Star Wars: Battlefront II for PC and PlayStation 2

For the full list of affected titles, be sure to check out the official EA page right here.

EA’s Origin service indicated earlier that the company was “working on transitioning those [Battlefield] games after the [GameSpy] shut down so you’ll still be able to play them.” With GameSpy’s hosting services closing at the end of this Month, it ultimately appears that the decision was made to discontinue support.

The company says you can visit EA Help with your questions, should you have any.

What’s your game plan before the shut down? Is it time to revisit some of the older Battlefield titles before saying goodbye forever?

Sony Reports Watch Dogs is 60 Frames Per Second and 1080p on PlayStation 4 [Updated]

Update

It appears that Sony has altered the description of Watch Dogs on their official website, doing away with any mention of 1080p visuals and 60 frames per second. It’s tough to make the call, but it’s likely that the information was initially delivered inaccurately.

We’ll update you with any official information Ubisoft may or may not choose to release on the subject.

Original Story

Sony is reporting that Ubisoft’s open-world action-espionage title, Watch Dogs, will run at 60 frames per second and at a 1080p resolution on the PlayStation 4 when it launches this May 27.

The news comes from PlayStation’s official website, where the company writes, “The world of Watch Dogs is alive on PS4 with the best graphics on any console and exclusive missions found only on PlayStation. Hack everything as you make your way through Chicago’s underground as you experience Watch_Dogs in a way that only PS4 can provide, at 60 Frames Per Second in 1080p.”

Xbox’s website makes no mention of resolution or frame rate, though Watch Dogs animation director Colin Graham mentioned earlier that both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions “are identical in almost every way.”

Watch Dogs hits PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on May 27. Ubisoft outed a character trailer not too long ago that you can check out here.

In-Game Screens [and Video] of Battlefield 4 Dragon’s Teeth DLC Weapons [Updated]

Battlefield 4‘s fourth multiplayer expansion, Dragon’s Teeth, is still likely a ways out from launch, but already we’re picking up bits and pieces of details.

We spotted some brand new key art earlier in the week, later confirmed to be official, but are now getting our first peek at Dragon’s Teeth weapon offerings thanks to users like hattiwatti.

Below are three sets of screens showing off the Unica 6 Magnum, MPX Personal Defense Weapon, and CS5 Sniper Rifle, all gathered by hattiwatti. Exactly how the weapons were unlocked, we’re not certain, but it’s likely some tampering with the game files was involved.

Check them out.

PvZ: Garden Warfare – Proper Party System High In Priority, Earn a Free Craaaazy Pack

With Battlefield 4 taking its first steps on implementing the highly requested party/squad system recently, it appears PopCap HD is following suit with a party system of their own in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare.

According to Garden Warfare’s creative director Justin Wiebe, a proper party system is indeed a very high priority for the team.

Furthermore, we can expect to see progress shots of the Plasma Peashooter soon, said Wiebe, which was voted in by PvZ fans as the next Peashooter variant.

This month also marks the fifth year anniversary of the Plants vs. Zombies franchise and to celebrate the occasion, PopCap HD will also be awarding Garden Warfare players with a free “Craaaazy Sticker Pack” the next time they log on.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare is available now for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One platforms, with PC partaking in the PvZ war this upcoming June 24.

Titanfall Expedition DLC Hits Xbox 360 in June, Updates Will “Follow Behind,” Says Respawn

Though the Xbox 360 port of Respawn Entertainment and Bluepoint Games’ shooter, Titanfall, is destined to benefit from the same sort of support the Xbox One and PC versions will receive, updates “will naturally follow behind,” says the studios.

In a recent blog posting, the author confirmed that all Xbox One and PC updates, both free and paid, will find their way to the Xbox 360 version of the game, including the shortly upcoming Expedition DLC, due out later this month on Xbox One and PC.

That said, fans will notice a timing difference for the same reasons the Xbox 360 version’s launch was delayed in the first place. On that note, Xbox 360 users won’t see Expedition until some time in June.

“Respawn must first finish their additions and improvements for the Xbox One and PC, and afterwards Bluepoint can then grab the latest and update the Xbox 360 version,” writes the author. “We’re working with Respawn and Bluepoint to streamline the process and close the gap, allowing Xbox 360 updates to be published as closely as possible to Respawn’s updates.

“Right now the Bluepoint team is bringing over changes included in the Xbox One’s Content Update 2 while also working on the Expedition DLC. We asked them to split the CU2 into two parts, which includes the update to the Gooser challenge that recently went live, with the rest of the changes becoming available soon.”

That, at least, clears up what exactly was included in the Xbox 360 update that went live earlier this week.

It looks like users on previous-gen hardware will have to hang tight a little bit longer for the rest of the update. Meanwhile you can read up on all the details here.

Destiny – Bungie Talks Factions In Latest Weekly Update

Bungie community manager David “DeeJ” Dague opens up the conversation with Destiny fans about in-game Factions, something that was alluded to in greater detail in this impressive fan-made trailer breakdown from earlier this week.

Over on Bungie’s weekly update, Dague answered what he could about Destiny’s multiple Factions, five of which were spotted in the video mentioned above.

“Do factions even exist?” fan ChuckieJ asked. “It’s weird that I bought a “New Monarchy” shirt two years ago and it’s still not confirmed that it actually exists.”

“Factions most certainly exist,” answered Dague. “Don’t use that shirt to spit shine your boots just yet. The real question is: Will you still love New Monarchy once you’ve had a taste of their politics? Perhaps you’ll start to develop an affinity for Dead Orbit and FWC as well. As a Guardian, you’ll be a free agent. You’ll decide whose bidding is worth doing, and you can be an equal opportunity killer.”

Dague dove deeper into the subject, talking about faction-specific gear and their involvement in Destiny’s competitive multiplayer. Check out the questions and answers below:

Q: “Can you tell us more about the factions?”

A: “You know what? We can. We should. It’s time to reveal a thing or two about the mysterious socio-political forces that shape the culture and history of the City. Now all we need is for one of you to ask a specific question about them.”

Q: “Will there be any faction-specific gear like weapons and armor?”

A: “Factions will reward you for your service to their cause in a number of ways. You just mentioned two of them.”

Q: “You said we will learn more about PvP at E3. Does this also mean we’ll get more information about the Factions, since they are integral to PvP lore?”

A: “Your assumption seems to root the factions in the competitive arena. In truth, each faction will have their own motivations for sending you into the wild on a variety of vital missions. They’re not just cheering sections for a competitive fracas. You’ll find their agents in their tower. You’ll discover their missions while you’re patrolling the wastes. You’ll detect their influence over other heroes of the City. Everything you do in the game will add to your understanding of the story and the world in which it takes place. Factions are colorful strands in that tapestry.”

Luckily, Factions won’t bar off friends and clans from being able to party up with each other, Dague explains.

Q: “Will my whole clan need to be in the same faction?”

A: “You’ll have a number of ways to express your solidarity with one faction or another – or all. One thing we do not want to do is give you a choice that would result in a barrier between you and your friends. Your clan is quite safe from the sectarian strife of the factions. Be excellent to each other.”

Bungie has confirmed that Destiny will be at E3 this year, so we’ll likely learn much more early June. Keep your eyes open.

Borderlands: TPS! – Franchise Director Gives Details on Recent Playtest

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! has been officially outed for over a month now, but Gearbox Software and 2K Australia have been keeping awfully ever since.

Luckily, franchise director of Borderlands, Matt Armstrong, has recently provided some insight into the game’s development over Twitter during a recent playtest. You can check out some of the highlights below.

Keep in mind that the information above is subject to change as Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! is obviously still in its development stages. Nothing is set in stone as of yet.

But with that said, judging by the series of tweets from Armstrong, it appears that Nisha The Law Bringer will indeed be heavily focused on using Jakob’s weaponry, as we speculated before. Also, according to Armstrong’s time with Wilhelm The Enforcer during the latest playtest, it appears Wilhelm’s offensive skill tree will consist of skills that caters to Ice elemental loot.

Furthermore, despite Claptrap’s comedic nature in the Borderlands series, it looks like he’ll no longer be mere cannon fodder. According to Armstrong, Claptrap is will indeed be a capable playable character.

The most interesting tid-bit of information from the series of tweets is that Gearbox/2k Australia seem open on changing what level you unlock your action skill from level five to level three, giving players an earlier look at what each class is capable of.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is set to be released sometime this Fall for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 platforms.

Which character will you be playing as first?
