Report – Ubisoft Shanghai Helping with Far Cry 4 Development

Although a new Far Cry game still hasn’t been officially announced, Xavier Plagnal, Ubisoft Shanghai’s design manager, mentioned his involvement in the next iteration on his resume.

Xavier Plagnal’s LinkedIn page, spotted by VideoGamer, lists that he has been serving as Content Director on the next Far Cry game since September of last year. Keep in mind, Ubisoft Shanghai, Ubisoft Massive, Ubisoft Red Storm and Ubisoft Montreal have all worked on Far Cry 3.

This news doesn’t come as a surprise, as Ubisoft previously shared their enthusiasm about continuing the series. “It’s a great brand and now it’s got the recognition it deserves, so we’re clearly going to make another one: more on that soon,” Ubisoft’s marketing manager told Gamespot last summer.

We hope that if Ubisoft is developing multiplayer for the title, it will be better than their last effort.

Call of Duty: Ghosts Onslaught DLC Video Preview

Onslaught is coming to Call of Duty: Ghosts this Tuesday, January 28, on Xbox Live.

Courtesy of Activision, we recently had the chance to visit the team over at Infinity Ward to try out some of the new content, including the DLC’s four new multiplayer maps, new field order rewards, new weapons, and new Extinction mode.

All four maps; Ignition, Containment, Bay View, and Fog, offer some of Call of Duty’s most unique multiplayer maps yet. All range from small to medium in size and offer new interactive elements and more excitement, but with a hint of nostalgia when it comes to one map in particular. Most importantly, I found that each map offered a much higher degree of fun. No longer concerned over designs that adhere to Ghosts’ more serious and sombre tone, it seems that Infinity Ward was really able to let loose, use their imagination, and put together a more playful set of maps that don’t take themselves too seriously.

Each map is uniquely themed and distinct from one another. From the boggy marshes of Fog, to the beautiful sun-lit boardwalks of Bay View, they really stand out from the current palette of vanilla maps. The new field order rewards also spice things up nicely, creating new ways to interact with the map and other players. We were able to trigger a few mortar strikes and watch as they bombarded points on the map, even destroying a large bridge in one case. Of course, things got a little spooky when a player dawned the looks and persona of Michael Myers, gaining a higher pool of health, more speed, and an increased proficiency in axe-handling. There was no running from this maniac.

The Maverick weapon platform, which appears in both the assault rifle and A2 sniper rifle variants, gives fans two brand new weapons to master in Onslaught. I found both aesthetically pleasing and fun to use, but not over-effective compared to other weapons. Like most assault rifles in Ghosts, the Maverick AR excels in medium to ranged-combat while the sniper rifle variant’s high-tech optic allows you to spot enemies easier.

Lastly, Extinction fans will need to come up with a few new strategies as they face new and much more powerful enemies than ever before. There’s also more to discover in the way of story as the saga continues in episode one of this new four-part series.

Below, we’ve capture footage of all four new maps, the new Maverick assault rifle and sniper rifle, and even some action from Nightfall. Check it out and let us know what you think in the comments!

Microsoft Buys Gears of War IP From Epic Games, Puts Black Tusk Studio In Charge

As of today, Epic games, the developers behind Gears of War, will no longer own the rights to their franchise, as Microsoft have made the announcement of the IP rights acquisition.

“It all comes back to our commitment to Xbox fans,” said Phil Spencer, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Studios, explaining the reasoning behind purchasing the Gears franchise. “The ‘Gears of War’ franchise has a very strong, passionate and valued fan base on Xbox. Over twenty-two million units have been sold across all ‘Gears of War’ titles worldwide, grossing over $1B dollars (US). This franchise, and these fans, are part of the soul of Xbox. By acquiring this franchise, Microsoft Studios will continue to offer them more of their favorite games and entertainment experiences from the ‘Gears of War’ universe.”

The acquisition highlights that all future and past Gears of War titles will remain exclusive to Microsoft, dismissing all rumors that the title was heading towards other consoles.  Epic Games also released a statement noting that they are happy with this agreement and hoping the best for the future of the franchise.

“Epic Games has reached an agreement to sell the ‘Gears of War’ intellectual property rights to Microsoft.  We’re very proud of the franchise we built in close partnership with Microsoft over the past decade and are happy that this agreement enables Microsoft to forge ahead with the ‘Gears’ universe on their industry-leading platforms as Epic concentrates its efforts on new projects,” said Epic founder and CEO Tim Sweeney. “Epic remains totally dedicated to supporting Xbox One and is licensing the Unreal Engine 4 technology to Microsoft in support of their future projects.”

As for the development team, Microsoft has assigned Black Tusk Studio, whom you may remember from this E3 teaser.

[youtube id=”90SRDi07iCI”]

Aside from this, little is known about the team other than that they are working on additional IP’s and are collaborating with some of the most top class developers out there today.

Battlefield 4 – DICE Details Incoming Vehicle Tweaks, Future Improvements Incoming

Previously hinted at earlier in the week, developers DICE will soon be making a number of significant balance tweaks to Battlefield 4’s vehicle gameplay based on player feedback.

“As millions of players dive in to the game, new gameplay styles emerge, and with them the need to keep fine-tuning the core gameplay elements,” writes developer “H Brun” in latest Battlefield Blog update.

The changes are “slotted to go live in a future game update”, which a forum post from DICE representative “Trydling” mentions may launch at the “end of January/beginning of February.”

Check out exactly what DICE has in store via the official update notes below:

Aircraft and Anti-Aircraft

1) Reduced the total amount of missiles carried by the Mobile Anti-Aircraft vehicles from 6 to 4. The total carried missiles were making it impossible for helicopters to use counter measures to avoid the MAA’s attacks.

2) Reduced the velocity of the MAA’s default 20MM CANNON from 1200m/s to 800m/s to match the 30MM CANNON. This reduction reduces the distance projectiles will travel and should prevent situations where the MAA could engage enemy vehicles without leaving its protected home base. The damage of the cannons remains unchanged, and aircraft, especially helicopters, should remain wary of getting too close to a MAA.

3) Reduced the physical impact of all Anti-Aircraft missiles to prevent helicopters from flipping uncontrollably when hit. The damage values have not been changed.

4) Reduced the cone in which ACTIVE RADAR missiles search for targets, making them require a higher level of skill in predicting where a target will be when the missile is fired. The missiles were previously too easy to aim at long range, making them a guaranteed hit and a clear advantage over the other missile types.

5) Increased the direct damage done by the Attack Helicopter’s gunner cannon. The gunner will be better able to assist the pilot in taking down vehicle targets with this change.

6) Increased the direct hit damage of the Zuni Rockets for Attack Helicopters. The rate of fire of these rockets combined with their smaller magazine pool made them a poor choice over the other two rocket types.

7) Reduced the splash damage and maximum splash damage range of the Scout Helicopter 25MM CANNONS. These weapons were too effective against infantry with a higher splash, making them a clear choice over the 7.62 MINIGUNS in all combat situations. The 25MM CANNONS are intended to give the Scout Helicopter some measure of effectiveness against vehicles, at a clear trade off in effectiveness vs. infantry.

Tanks and Anti-Tank

1) Reduced the “intelligence” of the MBT LAW missiles, requiring the player to aim the missile closer to their target before the smart projectile will activate. Additionally, the MBT LAW now reloads slightly slower. This keeps the MBT LAW in its role of an easy to use, fire and forget weapon available to all Engineers, while also balancing it with the other rocket launchers in favor of skilled AT shots. Finally, a bug where the MBT LAW would pass through an ACTIVE PROTECTION shield has been fixed.

2) Fixed an issue where ACTIVE PROTECTION and the MP-APS did not properly stop 12G FRAG rounds.

3) Reduced the range where the M2 SLAM will do maximum damage to vehicles from 6M to 3M. Players will now need to be craftier when placing the M2 SLAM in order to get the full damage potential of this ambush anti vehicle weapon. This change is to primarily counter a tactic of placing 3 mines in the same spot to guarantee a kill on any vehicle passing within 6m. The range was deemed to be too large, making the M2 SLAM far superior to the M15 AT MINE.

4) Reduced the damage the STAFF shell does to all targets by 25%. This should balance the ease of use of the STAFF shell with its damage potential.

Announced in the previously mentioned forum update above, Battlefield 4 developers “will also share a large number of balancing tweaks that we are making to Battlefield 4 in future updates, including changes to DMR performance,” and more.

In addition, the studio vaguely stated that they are “looking to improve a number of items to further enhance the overall multiplayer experience.”

What vehicle tweaks are you most looking forward to?

Report – Titanfall Beta Dated for February 14

Looks like the folks over at Respawn Entertainment are answering prayers of those who want to get their hands on the game before it officially launches this March.

According to recent reports, the studio wants everyone to have a taste of their highly anticipated shooter, opposed to the alpha that went live a few weeks ago for only a select few.

Xboxygen, via NeoGAF, spotted a few promotional posters in Europe indicating that players can expect the beta for Titanfall to be available from February 14th until February 19th.

beta-titanfall-leak-2 leak-beta-titanfall

It’s still unclear whether these dates only apply for the European market, or if the beta will roll out for everyone on Valentine’s day. We recently reported that Titanfall’s beta was spotted in EA’s Origin this past weekend.

Titanfall is set to launch on March 11 for the PC, Xbox 360, and Xbox One platforms. Keep an eye on MP1st for an official announcement of the beta and which platforms it will be available on.

inFamous: Second Son Will Not Feature Multiplayer

Last June, we reported on the possibility that inFamous: Second Son may indeed feature some sort of a multiplayer feature.

While details were sketchy at the time, it was speculated that it would happen, considering that the last instalment before Second Son did indeed try to push for online interaction. Sadly, (or luckily depending on your preferences), inFamous: Second Son will not feature any sort player vs. player or co-op for that matter.

As confirmed by Brand Development Director, Ken Schramm, in an interview by UDM, while the main protagonist will indeed meet various NPC’s throughout the campaign, the game will not feature multiplayer and will remain a single-player game.

No news on whether the user generated content feature that allowed players to create their own missions and share it with others will be making it into the game. inFamous: Second Son releases on March 21st for PS4.

So, what are your guys’ thoughts? Are you glad it’s staying a single-player game or were you hoping to be able to bash one another head on with all sorts of crazy powers?

Thanks, DualShockers

Battlefield 4 – Loadout Presets Could Come To Battlelog, Says Developer

Ever wanted to use a custom loadout on the field of battle, but too tired of always switching everything? Well it looks like that could become a reality.

Taking to the Battlefield 4 subreddit, Battlelog developer Darklord has teased the possibility of loadout presets coming to Battlelog. Unfortunately, presets will not become an in-game feature Darklord has confirmed, and will remain exclusive to Battlelog.

Below is a video showcasing how the feature could work:

[youtube id=”u04BJASVkKM”]

Along with loadout presets, Darklord has also stated that he would like to see loadouts that change when the map does, which in user jHogan’s words would “open up a whole new dimension of gameplay“.

So what are your thoughts? Would you like to see this in the next Battlelog update? Tell us in the comment section below!

Competitive Pricing For Xbox One Digital Download Games ‘On Microsoft’s Agenda’

Microsoft’s Larry Hyrb, or better known as “Major Nelson” throughout the Xbox community, has shared some news recently indicating that the company is looking into competitive pricing for digital download games on the Xbox One.

Hyrb took to Reddit to address those who found it unfair that they are not able to pre-order Respawn Entertainment’s upcoming shooter, Titanfall, for the Xbox One digitally in order to take advantage of the recently announced promotion granting those who pre-ordered a redeemable $10 Xbox Live gift card code.

In response to this, Hyrb stated, “we are way aware of this and many of the concerns of the community – we have some great stuff planned for Xbox One this year (and beyond.) As soon as we can share some of the goodness…we will”

Interestingly enough, Hyrb has also revealed that competitive pricing for digital downloads is indeed in Microsoft’s agenda, in response to a concerned user.

Will you be purchasing more of your games digitally if Microsoft unveils competitive pricing for downloadable titles?

Rumor – Titanfall Beta Incoming, According to Origin

A Titanfall beta might be in the works, according to a recent notification on EA’s gaming client, Origin.

Earlier today, upon visiting the official Titanfall page on Origin, a small notification in the top left corner could be spotted, reading, “The beta is coming. Prepare for battle.”

Screen Shot 2014-01-24 at 10.50.32 AM

The notification has since been removed, indicating that someone may have jumped the gun on the announcement.

Originally, Respawn Entertainment community manager Abbie Heppe mentioned the possibility of a beta, but wasn’t able to make a confirmation at the time. This came shortly after the game’s Xbox One-exclusive limited technical test earlier last week.

As of this writing, we’ve yet to hear an official announcement on the matter, but we’ll be sure to let you know if one is made.

Thanks, Doug, for the tip!

Update

User Mdowz who had a conversation with an EA support representative learned that the alleged beta’s release date “is not yet fixed but it will be launching very soon”.

Titanfall Story Will Have an Ending, ‘You’ll Need to Play It From Both Sides’

Respawn Enertainment’s upcoming sci-fi shooter Titanfall may be a multiplayer-only title, but that doesn’t mean it won’t have some sort of story attached to all the action.

“Titanfall will most definitely have an ending. It’s not a story if it doesn’t have an ending, but there are multiple sides to that story,” said senior map designer Mohammad Alavi in an interview with XB1. “It’s told from both the Militia and IMC perspectives, and to fully grasp Titanfall’s campaign, you’ll need to play it from both sides. And as with any good story, we’ve hopefully peppered it with enough detail and nuance that you’ll notice something new every time you replay it.”

In Titanfall, the story will play out through the multiplayer campaign, as there is no traditional single-player experience as you’d find with most modern day shooters. Alavi talked about why the studio went this route and excluded Titanfall’s single player.

“Most consumers play the single-player campaign of any shooter only once, and then go on to play multiplayer for months or years,” he said. “Single player campaigns take hundreds of thousands of hours to develop, and with a team as small as ours we couldn’t afford to sink that kind of development time into a four to eight hour journey people will only play once. What we’re hoping to achieve is to take an exciting cinematic experience and weave it into multiplayer gameplay so compelling, that players will continue to be engrossed in the universe of Titanfall for months and years after its release.”

Alavi then went into more details, explaining exactly how the experience will play out when you boot up Titanfall for the first time.

“So we’ve only really spoken about one way to play Titanfall. That’s Campaign Multiplayer. You can join a lobby by yourself or with a party, but here’s where it gets different. You and your party or enlisted into a faction, either IMC or Militia. You’ll play the campaign and progress through the narrative hitting the missions in order until you’ve beaten the game on that faction. You’ll then have the option to play through again from the beginning on the other faction. Once you’ve beaten the game from both sides, you’ll be able to play any mission on either faction you like. There are traditional modes as well that you’d expect from a multiplayer FPS game and you can start playing those from the first time you run the game. No matter what you play, you earn XP and progress.”

Titanfall launches on the Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC on March 11. A multiplayer beta before hand is still a possibility, but isn’t confirmed.
