EA Explains Titanfall Console Exclusivity on Xbox

During yesterday’s earnings call, Electronic Arts commented on entering into a console exclusivity deal with Microsoft for their upcoming shooter, Titanfall.

Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President, Andrew Wilson, explained, “we made that decision when it was back a few years ago when we decided to go exclusive. We had some forecast at that time from where we thought both Xbox and PlayStation would be and that’s what we based our decision on.

Despite PlayStation 4’s popularity, highlighted by its latest sales figures, EA is not very concerned with Xbox’s console exclusively. “I think we’re still feeling very comfortable with that [decision to go exclusive]. I think — think about the deal as economically as we made. We told people last quarter that it’s a trade-off between The Sims 4, which is the product we moved out when we moved Titanfall in. And the reason that’s economically neutral on that deal in this year is that most of the expenses for the development of Respawn’s products were expensed along the way, as we do with all of our R&D.”

When asked about avoiding the issues that hampered Battlefield 4’s launch, Andrew Wilson noted, “We’re currently moving through kind of public tests of the product, and we’re seeing great results and we’re really looking forward to seeing the gamer reaction in March.”

Also during the call, it was revealed that DLC for Titanfall is in development. Titanfall releases on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 on March 11th.

EA Says Battlefield 4 Sales Unaffected by ‘Quality Issues’

Despite quality concerns surrounding DICE’s flagship shooter Battlefield 4, publishing company EA says any decline in sales can be attributed to the next-generation console transition, rather than a perceivably under-performing product.

During a recent third quarter 2014 investor call, EA president Peter Moore noted that Battlefield 4 sales are unaffected by ‘quality issues’ and will continue to ‘sell effectively throughout the next fiscal year’.

“We obviously saw some decline in current-gen software that wasn’t picked up by the increased anticipation that gamers had and the sales thereof of next-gen. Battlefield 4 was no different than FIFA or Need for Speed in this issue, but this was focused on current-gen rather than, we believe, any issues with the game itself,” he said. “This game has got a long tail, as you well know, and we will continue to be able to sell this effectively throughout the next fiscal year.”

“So yes, we did see some impact of the current-gen softness that was indicated by Andrew and Blake in their prepared statements, but this is not, we believe, a link to any quality issues.”

Titanfall DLC Already In Development, Confirms EA

Publishing company Electronic Arts confirms during a recent third quarter 2014 earnings call that downloadable content for newly opened studio Respawn Entertainment’s Titanfall is already in development.

The game ships on the Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC this March 11, but the company has already confirmed additional content in the works to be released at a later date.

Earlier, the studio confirmed that though mico-transactions would not be introduced in Titanfall, they had no news on a potential Season Pass, which would presumably offer a season of DLC at a discounted price.

In the call, EA also projected Titanfall to sell “conservatively” due to platform exclusivity. However, EA believes Titanfall will have significant “additive” impact in fiscal year 2015.

Battlefield 4 Among Top 3 Best Selling Games in December

Battlefield 4 was among the top three best selling games in the Western World across all platforms last December, according to a recent press release detailing Electronic Art’s Q3 FY14 financial results.

This is along with EA Sports’ FIFA 14, which also went on to become the number one best seller in Europe last December. Presumably, Activision’s Call of Duty: Ghosts rounds out the top three best selling games in the Western World for that month.

In addition, EA was noted as the number one Western publisher on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the same month. EA also represented 35% of third quarter software sales on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the West.

Stay tuned for more details from today’s earnings call.

February is Battlefield 4 Player Appreciation Month, “Netcode” Improvements and Platoons Incoming

Alongside a brand new patch expected within the coming days, Battlefield 4 developers DICE have some surprises in store for the Battlefield community this month.

“I’d like to announce the Battlefield 4 Player Appreciation Month,” writes DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson in a recent Battlefield Blog post. “Starting on Saturday, February 1, DICE is saying THANK YOU to all players by hosting a month filled with fun community missions and daily giveaways that you get just for jumping into a match.”

Next month, simply logging in each day will award all players with a new Bronze Battlepack while those logging in during Saturdays and Sundays will receive a Silver Battlepack. Gold Battlepacks can be achieved by participating in global DICE Community Missions where players will work together to complete Community-wide challenges.

In addition, DICE will also host a Double XP event for everyone while throwing in a few weapon shortcuts that unlock grenades and handguns from the base game. Premium members can look forward to exclusive weapon shortcuts for the Designated Marksman Rifle and Shotgun class.

Details on timing for Double XP and Community events are incoming.

Lastly, Troedsson also touched on a few important improvements coming to Battlefield 4 with more details to come.

“First, we are further improving a number of items commonly referred to as ‘netcode’. This will tighten the overall multiplayer experience, and we will be able to share these items with you in detail soon.”

Platoons will also be making a return, a fan-favorite feature in Battlefield 3. “In this added social layer, you can team up with your friends to create your own social space and accumulate stats together,” Troedsson says. “We’re also working on other feature additions that you’ve been asking for – stay tuned for more.”

Lots to look forward to next month! Be sure to keep your sights locked on MP1st for more details as they come.

The Elder Scrolls Online Won’t Require a PlayStation Plus Membership, XBL Gold Required

It appears that The Elder Scrolls: Online will be joining the list of PlayStation 4 games that won’t require a PlayStation Plus subscription.

This is according to a recent entry on the PlayStation Blog where Matt Firor, the game director of ZeniMax Online Studios, answered important questions regarding the title.

He confirmed The Elder Scrolls Online won’t need a PlayStation Plus subscription, though those who wishing to play the MMO will still need to pay a monthly fee of $14.99 USD.

Regarding the Xbox One, there’s still a possibility that The Elder Scrolls Online will not require an Xbox Live Gold membership, as a few months ago, Peter Hines, marketing boss over at Bethesda, told OXM that they’ve been trying to exempt the game from needing dual subscriptions to play.

Update:

A Bethesda representative clarified to Game Informer that  Xbox One’s version of The Elder Scrolls Online will indeed require a Xbox Live Gold membership.

The Elder Scrolls Online is set to release on the PC/Mac, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this year.

Battlefield 4 YouTube Personality Speaks Out, Responds to EA Advertising “Scandal”

Last week, news of EA paying influential YouTube personalities to advertise their games, including Battlefield 4, broke out, causing quite a stir in the relationship between video producers and their followers, not to mention the ties between EA and its fans.

In an example posted on NeoGAF, via IGN, a leaked contract outlined guidelines that producers needed to follow in order to get paid a certain amount of CPM. It included requests like leaving out commentary on bugs and glitches and highlighting only specific platforms, like the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or PC.

Few sites were quick to criticize producers without full knowledge on the subject matter, and so well-known Battlefield YouTube personality LevelCapGamer took it upon himself to further explain the situation and issue a personal response to the matter.

“I’m writing this response because someone needs to say something on the YouTubers’ behalf about what happened is happening with the situation regarding YouTubers getting paid to make videos of Battlefield and other games,” he wrote in a recent Reddit post. “This is not an apology.”

“Most of the recent articles I have read regarding this subject talks about EA buying positive reviews and asking us to lie to our fan base about the state of Battlefield 4. Nothing could be further from the truth, and unfortunately these articles have been written to grab attention, so have dishonestly portrayed this situation as a scandal.

“Having been a part of several EA Ronku campaigns, I can tell you that at no point was I asked to lie or falsify my opinion of a game. EA is aware that asking people to do this is wrong and if you actually read the assignment documents that were leaked, EA never asks us to misinform people by only saying positive things about the game. I would love to disclose the actual campaigns to the public so you could see just how tame the requests were but I don’t have the authority to do so.”

He goes into further detail about the ordeal, which you can read for yourself right here, but it appears that his primary takeaway is as follows: “Everything that I say in my Battlefield videos is genuine; no opinions are bought, and thus I didn’t feel the need to disclose that I was getting paid by EA to say what I want.”

“I don’t feel like I’ve cheated anyone or falsely influenced anyone into purchasing Battlefield or any other game,” he concluded. “And while I cannot speak for all my fellow YouTubers, I know that those with whom I work on a regular basis feel the same way.”

Popular YouTube personality Boogie2988 also commented on the state of advertisement on YouTube in an informative video posted on his channel. In a similar case between Microsoft and content creators, he noted that this type of advertisement might be more commonplace throughout the industry than expected.

What’s your take? As a viewer, do you feel you are being swayed by money-fueled opinions, or is it a fair-and-square way for content creators to earn a living?

Update

Shortly after publishing this piece, we noticed a video from yet another popular Battlefield 4 YouTube personality JackFrags discussing similar points. It’s a bit on the long side, but we think it’s hearing out what Battlefield producers like JackFrags have to say.

Rumor – Future Call of Duty: Ghosts DLC Map Names Possibly Leaked; Dome, Battery, Red River, and Rumble

It seems that Infinity Ward might have slipped the names of Call of Duty: Ghosts‘ next map pack through today’s release of the game’s Onslaught DLC on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

Map Names

Battery, Rumble, Red River, and Dome, as spotted by Reddit user Osiris OP, are either the actual names of upcoming Ghosts DLC maps, or code names that Infinity Ward is using internally for testing purposes.

It’s worth pointing out that two maps titled “Dome” have been a part of the Call of Duty franchise; one in Treyarch’s World of War and one in Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 3. Also, as we previously mentioned, many users found Strike Zone from Call of Duty: Ghosts strikingly similar in layout to Modern Warfare 3’s Dome.

Of course, take things with a grain of salt. There’s no telling what exactly the significance of these map names are, but it’s always fun to speculate.

Do you see a Dome remake in future map packs likely, considering the similarities in Strike Zone?

Titanfall Developer Responds To Concerns Regarding Dedicated Servers and Matchmaking

Titanfall may be one of the most anticipated games of the year, but it looks like it has hit a rough patch with gamers when it comes to certain features included in the game.

Not only have gamers been questioning certain decisions of Respawn Entertainment’s first IP, like how Titanfall is built to be six on six, but some have gone as far as telling the developers that matchmaking completely renders dedicated servers useless on the forums of Respawn’s official site.

In response to these issues, developer “Scriptacus” has stated,

“Regardless of the method you use to connect to them, dedicated servers offer better performance, lower pings, more consistent pings, remove host advantage and increase security when compared to P2P.”

Concerns were also raised that players could be thrown into matches with “foreigners from across the globe”, leading to shoddy connection issues.

Respawn’s response?

“This is incorrect; many matchmaking systems choose to match players across regions in favor not matching them at all, but it is not a “guarantee”. Your assertion that, with a server browser, there will always be a game with other players available with a low ping is also incorrect. Simply put, sometimes there’s not going to be anyone to play with locally at 3am, matchmaking or not.

Server browsers and matchmaking both provide numerous (if sometimes different) benefits. Give them both credit where credit is due.”

So what are your thoughts on dedicated servers being in Titanfall? Is it for the better? If you’re not too sure, maybe you can form an opinion when you play the Titanfall Beta coming to Xbox One and PC  soon.

Thanks, Gamingbolt.

Research Firm Believes Take-Two’s 2014 Fiscal Year to Include Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA V on PC, PS4, and Xbox One

Colin Sebastian, a Senior Research Analyst over at Baird Equity Research, has published the firm’s 2014 Video Game Industry Predictions and Q4 Results Preview.

The analyst predicts that video game publisher Take-Two might port Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One given the title’s success. He also speculates that a new entry in the Red Dead series, now developed by Rockstar San Diego, should be released this fiscal year.

You can read through his outlook on Take-Two’s year below.

“We expect product announcements over the next year such as extending GTA V to other platforms (e.g., PC, next-gen consoles), the next Red Dead, etc., to help improve revenue and earnings visibility. In addition, the company has significant potential to grow digital/onnline revenues, which should help improve gross margins and add visibility to growth.

We expect PC version of GTA V in 2014. Recently, Amazon.com posted a product listing for a PC-version of the company’s blockbuster franchise Grand T heft Auto V (GTA). While a PC version would not be a big surprise, this indirect confirmation of the game helps to provide some added visibility to consensus 2015 (March) estimates.

In fact, we have previously published that GTA-extensions are in the development pipeline, and likely needed for the company to hit FY targets. We also believe the next Red Dead game is in the works potentially for a 2014 launch.”

Would you rather play GTA 5 on a more powerful console or a new Red Dead iteration first?

From the looks of Zampella’s tweet, it appears that Titanfall players on the Xbox 360 might not to be able to partake in the beta. However, through additional tweets, we learn that none other then Bluepoint games are responsible for the development of the Xbox 360 version.

You may remember the studio for handling HD ports of titles like God Of War on the PlayStation 3 and Metal Gear Solid on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Additionally, Zampella also left a little teaser video of the Titanfall Collector Edition’s box on his Instagram account. It’s so big, it can even fit one whole human inside. Check out the video here!

Report – Ubisoft Shanghai Helping with Far Cry 4 Development

Although a new Far Cry game still hasn’t been officially announced, Xavier Plagnal, Ubisoft Shanghai’s design manager, mentioned his involvement in the next iteration on his resume.

Xavier Plagnal’s LinkedIn page, spotted by VideoGamer, lists that he has been serving as Content Director on the next Far Cry game since September of last year. Keep in mind, Ubisoft Shanghai, Ubisoft Massive, Ubisoft Red Storm and Ubisoft Montreal have all worked on Far Cry 3.

This news doesn’t come as a surprise, as Ubisoft previously shared their enthusiasm about continuing the series. “It’s a great brand and now it’s got the recognition it deserves, so we’re clearly going to make another one: more on that soon,” Ubisoft’s marketing manager told Gamespot last summer.

We hope that if Ubisoft is developing multiplayer for the title, it will be better than their last effort.

Call of Duty: Ghosts Onslaught DLC Video Preview

Onslaught is coming to Call of Duty: Ghosts this Tuesday, January 28, on Xbox Live.

Courtesy of Activision, we recently had the chance to visit the team over at Infinity Ward to try out some of the new content, including the DLC’s four new multiplayer maps, new field order rewards, new weapons, and new Extinction mode.

All four maps; Ignition, Containment, Bay View, and Fog, offer some of Call of Duty’s most unique multiplayer maps yet. All range from small to medium in size and offer new interactive elements and more excitement, but with a hint of nostalgia when it comes to one map in particular. Most importantly, I found that each map offered a much higher degree of fun. No longer concerned over designs that adhere to Ghosts’ more serious and sombre tone, it seems that Infinity Ward was really able to let loose, use their imagination, and put together a more playful set of maps that don’t take themselves too seriously.

Each map is uniquely themed and distinct from one another. From the boggy marshes of Fog, to the beautiful sun-lit boardwalks of Bay View, they really stand out from the current palette of vanilla maps. The new field order rewards also spice things up nicely, creating new ways to interact with the map and other players. We were able to trigger a few mortar strikes and watch as they bombarded points on the map, even destroying a large bridge in one case. Of course, things got a little spooky when a player dawned the looks and persona of Michael Myers, gaining a higher pool of health, more speed, and an increased proficiency in axe-handling. There was no running from this maniac.

The Maverick weapon platform, which appears in both the assault rifle and A2 sniper rifle variants, gives fans two brand new weapons to master in Onslaught. I found both aesthetically pleasing and fun to use, but not over-effective compared to other weapons. Like most assault rifles in Ghosts, the Maverick AR excels in medium to ranged-combat while the sniper rifle variant’s high-tech optic allows you to spot enemies easier.

Lastly, Extinction fans will need to come up with a few new strategies as they face new and much more powerful enemies than ever before. There’s also more to discover in the way of story as the saga continues in episode one of this new four-part series.

Below, we’ve capture footage of all four new maps, the new Maverick assault rifle and sniper rifle, and even some action from Nightfall. Check it out and let us know what you think in the comments!
