Battlefield 4 Grenade Tweaks Incoming, DICE Details Changes

In a continuing effort to improve the game, developers DICE are hard at work on a number of upcoming balance updates for Battlefield 4.

Earlier, the studio detailed upcoming changes being made to Battlefield 4’s weapons and vehicles, a few of which have already made it in today’s big Battlefield 4 update. Today, yet another blog post from developer “H Brun” details upcoming Grenade tweaks.

Players will now be able to carry additional flash bang grenades and hand flares. Meanwhile the RGO Impact grenade sees an increase in damage but decrease in blast radius while the V40 Mini Grenade get a decrease in maximum damage, though it still keeps is carrying capacity of 3.

Check out the details below:

Upcoming Battlefield 4 Grenade Tweaks

1) Increased the number of M84 FLASHBANG and HAND FLARES the player can carry from 2 to 3. A player may now have 3 active HAND FLARES, up from 1 before. The HAND FLARE remains mostly a gadget of comic relief, though its ability to blind IRNV sights should not be forgotten. The increase in the number the player can carry should allow for a larger tactical use of both the HAND FLARE and the M84 FLASHBANG.

2) Increased the effect of M84 FLASHBANG grenades on friendly and enemy players. When Friendly Fire is OFF, friendlies receive approximately half the effect duration. Previous duration was 4 seconds, now 5 seconds for enemy players. Additionally increased the range at which a player feels the full effect of the flash, and increased the effect on players not looking directly at the flash bang. This should sufficiently improve the reliability of the M84 FLASHBANG, and make it a viable choice in the grenade category.

3) Increased the maximum damage for the RGO from 67 to 80, however reduced the range of explosion. The RGO was essentially an instant kill in Hardcore, it now has a reduced 1 hit kill range, however accurate throws will yield higher damage values in Core. This clarifies the role of the RGO as an accurate impact hand grenade, while still not allowing 1 hit kills in Core.

4) Reduced the visual and audio effect for the detonation of the V40 Mini to highlight its smaller blast when compared to other grenades. Decreased the maximum damage from 80 to 60, and decreased the range at which maximum damage is applied. The player continues to carry 3 V40 grenades, and is still able to use 2 of them to get a kill in Core. Previously the V40 was entirely superior to the M67 in Hardcore, this change aims to balance them in Hardcore, while also keeping their effectiveness intact in Core.

What are your thoughts on the upcoming changes? Are they fair?

Rumor – Titanfall to Have 16 Maps at Launch, Followed by First DLC 45 Days Later

Titanfall has been in the news all week, with rumors of a beta on Valentines day, later confirmed by Respawn, to the announcement of cloud server updates to eliminate gameplay interruption.

It looks like the week gets better with recent leaks on the NeoGAF forums.

Coming from a reliable source who goes by the name “CBOAT”, reports are coming in that Titanfall will launch with 16 multiplayer maps. Considering the fact that Respawn ditched a single player campaign to focus solely on multiplayer, it’s no surprise that one of the most anticipated games comes with a myriad of maps.

Along with that leak, another reliable user by the name “nktrnl” has let loose that 45 days after launch, Titanfall will see its first downloadable content, with another to come just 120 days later after launch. No specifics on DLC were given.

So what are your thoughts? Are you excited by the rumors, or disappointed? Let us know in the comment section below!

Ace Combat Infinity Beta Begins February 4

The Ace Combat Infinity Beta is about to begin in a couple of days, according to the new recently released trailer.

Ace Combat Infinity is releasing exclusively on the PlayStation 3 later this year.

I had an opportunity to play in the Beta when it was live in Japan, and from what I can say, the game plays great, however the model of F2P it decided to go with could be improved.

The game runs on a “fuel” system, or more of a number of plays system. You have two fuel tanks, which one depletes after the end of each match, meaning you can only play two games before having to wait for four hours for a tank to fill. You can buy them, or additionally you can fork over $60, which will basically grant you full access to everything and unlimited plays.

DayZ Standalone Alpha – Patch Notes For Next Week’s Update

A new update for the Alpha build of DayZ Standalone is set to release sometime next week, and with it comes many tweaks, additions, and graphical improvements.

Some of the highlights of this update include the addition of a new weapon, which is the Machete. So if you wanted to go around Michael Myering everyone, now’s your chance. Also Server hopping penalties will be added to discourage players from hopping onto different servers to gain loot and then hopping back to the first server with a fully outfitted character. Other new additions include new zombies.

The full patch note can be viewed below.

DAYZ PENDING UPDATE CHANGELOG

Branch: Experimental
ETA to Stable: 5-7 February 2014
Version: 0.33.114782

Known Issues

  • Spawns: Loot is not spawning in military tents
  • Spawns: Some structures in Svetlo currently do not spawn loot
  • Server: Servers under load can delay actions from the client
  • Only 4 dynamic light sources will be rendered at one time currently

What are experimental/stable branches?

In your steam application settings, you can choose a “beta branch”. This allows you to opt in to our experimental branch to try it out.

Does my saved character get affected in experimental branch?

No. It runs on a different database, so any changes will not affect your character on stable branch.

I can’t find a slot while on experimental branch!

Only a small number of servers run this branch. You will need to change your game back to the stable branch and play on a normal server

Can I join a stable branch server wil experimental branch client?

No, you would need to change your client back to stable.

When will this be in stable?

We expect stable to be updated before the end of that week (by 7 February 2014).

Why has not been fixed yet when there is new content coming in?

While priorities are very important when assigning work, there is a limit to how many people can work on a complex task without making it even more complex. Also, many of the team are focused purely on content/design so while the important stuff is being fixed, they continue to provide content and design updates.

Is mouse acceleration being fixed?

It is not fixed in this update, but we plan to make control changes. It is not as simple as turning it “off” as the speed your character turns is not dictated by the mouse itself, but your movements combined with the type of weapon you have, how tired you are, etc.

New Battlefield 4 Game Updates Rolling Out, PC Patch Introduces Mantle Support

DICE has begun rolling out a few hefty Battlefield 4 game update across most platforms.

Two updates are currently live as of this writing on the PC and Xbox One. Additional patches will be launching throughout the day on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3.

UPDATE 1: PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 patch notes added below.

UPDATE 2: Xbox 360 patch notes added.

With the new updates, PC users can look forward to support for DICE’s new Mantle renderer that the studio has developed in conjunction with AMD. Frostbite Technical Director “Trydling” wrote a detailed post about the new software where he outlines requirements and shares a few test case results. You can read up on it right here.

For the most part, the rest of the updates include numerous fixes and improve all weapons in the designated marksman rifle class. Check out the notes below and be sure to check back for updates!

Battlefield 4 January 30 PC Game Update Notes

Mantle Support

  • The new Mantle renderer has been added in Battlefield 4. Most players can expect a performance increase by using this new low-level graphics API. Check out this news post [battlelog.battlefield.com] for the full details on Mantle, what the requirements are to run it, and how to enable it.

Mantle Requirements

  • AMD Catalyst 14.1 Beta drivers. AMD will post them here.
  • AMD Radeon GPU with Graphics Core Next (Note: AMD Catalyst™ 14.1 initially supports the AMD Radeon™ R9 290X, R9 290, R7 260X and “Kaveri” APU (learn more))
  • 64-bit Windows (7, 8 or 8.1)

CPU/GPU performance and monitoring

  • Tweaked and improved CPU multi-core utilization to try and avoid stuttering and low framerate due to stalls that happened on some CPU and OS configurations.
  • Users can now configure and control themselves how many CPU cores should be used in the game with the new “Thread.MaxProcessorCount” settings in User.cfg.
  • “Render.DrawScreenInfo 1” now also shows information about which CPU and GPU is in the system, how many GPUs & CPU cores are used and which renderer (DirectX 11 or Mantle) is active
  • Added new “PerfOverlay.FrameFileLogEnable” command that records frame times on CPU & GPU and logs out to a .csv file
  • AMD Catalyst driver 13.12 (or later) is now recommended instead of 13.9
  • Enabled tile-based compute shader lighting optimization on Nvidia for improved GPU performance (already active on AMD GPUs)
  • Improved performance with rendering and spotlights for all GPUs, primarily in in-door environments

DMR Balance Tweaks

  • Increased the damage of all DMRs across all ranges. Specifically, damage has been increased at long ranges to allow three-hit kills against unarmored opponents. Additionally, reduced the penalty to accuracy for sustained DMR fire, allowing more rapid follow up shots in combat. The amount of the damage increase varies from weapon to weapon, according to its intended range, rate of fire, and damage. We will continue to monitor the effectiveness of DMRs in combat, and determine if additional action is needed to make DMRs a viable mid to long range weapon.

Other Items

  • Greatly reduced the risk of crosshairs disappearing, which would also result in hit markers disappearing
  • Added a headshot icon on the killcard. This should help identify instances where players are correctly killed by one shot
  • Fixed an issue in Squad Deathmatch where the “Win/Lose” text was overlapping
  • Fixed an issue with players using an exploit for the SOFLAM
  • Fixed an issue with players using an exploit for the MAV
  • Fixed the gameplay code to properly track the FOV (Field of View) changes in the options menu
  • Fixed an issue where chat would break when entering “false” or “true” in the chat window
  • Fixed an out-of-helicopter glitch in Air Superiority where players could spawn on the ground and play as infantry
  • Fixed the misaligned crosshairs on the T90 MBT
  • Added setting to tweak joystick dead zone
  • Various minor crash fixes

First Xbox One Update To Be Available In March, White Xbox One Rumored To Come Before 2015

Interesting rumors are flying about regarding what Microsoft has planned for this year and the year to follow.

There may be some truth to one in particular, according to The Verge, who reports that Xbox One owners can expect the long awaited update for their console this coming March.

It is said to improve Xbox Live services and and include other system fixes, such as addressing the party-chat problems and placement of social features on Xbox Live.

On to the second rumor. Remember that pretty sweet looking white Xbox One console that was exclusive to Microsoft employees? Allegedly, those wanting to get their hands on it can expect it some time this year, according to NeoGAF.

In addition, The Verge can confirm that Microsoft has been testing  an Xbox One model that does not include a Blu-Ray drive for $399.99 USD. Of course, since nothing is officially announced by Microsoft, take everything with a grain of salt.

If the aforementioned Blue-Ray drive-less Xbox One model becomes a reality, would you be more willing to pick it up at a $399.99 USD price tag?

Missing Battlefield 4 Veteran Battlepacks Reportedly Available ‘Early March’

Still missing your Battlefield 4 Veteran Battlepack? Chances are, yes.

Since launch, Veteran Battlepacks that were to be made available for all Battlefield 4 players with one or more previous Battlefield games in their library still sit greyed-out and inaccessible for a number of users.

Among other things, the pack awards players with the ACB-90 knife first introduced via Battlefield 3 Premium, as well as a dog tag and camoflage pattern to commemorate your status as a Battlefield veteran.

Qj15xkA-1
Via Reddit user Drakiro.

Earlier today on EA’s Answer HQ help forum, moderator “eabastian” commented on the status of the missing Battlepacks, saying users can expect them to “become available in early March.” More information to follow.

It’s not entirely clear why only a few individuals have actually received their Veteran Battlepacks, though we presume developers DICE are hoping to get Battlefield 4 completely stabilized before handing them out en masse.

Have you gotten your Veteran Battlepack?

Titanfall – Cloud Allows ‘Seamless’ Server Updates On Xbox One, PC to Support Xbox 360 Controller

Some neat news comes out of Titanfall development studio, Respawn Entertainment, today.

Developer Jon Shiring, AKA “Slothy” over at the Respawn Entertainment forums revealed that even though they were pushing server updates during Titanfall’s closed alpha trial earlier this month, no interruptions were present.

“During our small Closed Alpha, we rolled out 3 new server builds and completely moved players from one build to the next without interrupting gameplay,” he wrote. “Players never noticed a difference (other than some bugs went away).

“We will definitely be rolling out new server builds to fix issues that we find. Not every issue can be patched entirely on the server, and so some fixes will require a client patch. But new server builds are definitely something we will be doing.”

He went on to explain how Microsoft’s Azure servers allow the studio to push seamless updates and how Titanfall will be taking advantage of this feature after release.

“Seamless updates are due to the stuff we’ve written,” he said. “The fact that we can somewhat-easily deploy new builds on Azure is due to the Xbox Live Compute team’s hard work. This is an area that we’ve been working on with them for some time now. We originally told them that no-cert, fast server updates were a requirement for us, and they made that happen.”

It looks like down time for server updates is a thing of the past for both Titanfall developers and soon-to-be owners of the sci-fi shooter.

In related news, Respawn Entertainment has revealed the box art for the Titanfall Collector’s Edition that we got our first glimpse of yesterday. Check it out below:

Titanfall1

Also, Respawn confirmed via Twitter that the PC version of the game will support the Xbox 360 controller, for those who favor that style of input device.

UPDATE: The controller will also support aim assist on the PC, according to the studio.

Titanfall launches on Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC on March 11.

New Dark Souls 2 Multiplayer Details And 12-Minute Gameplay Video

Dark Souls 2 is seeing a lot of big changes being made to the multiplayer, all of which are meant to “enhance” a player’s experience and even possibly make it even more difficult than it already it is.

That’s is fine by us since this game is all about the difficulty.

Speaking with the Official PlayStation Magazine, Software’s Co-Director Yui Tanimura talked about some of the changes made to the summoning system, covenants, and even penalties for invading players.

“Our main intent is not to foster a greater frequency of multiplayer, but more to give players the opportunity to interact even within the ‘loose’ parameters allowed.”

He goes on to say that, unlike in previous titles, when you die and become a Hallow, you can still be invaded by other players. This means that you are no longer safe, though time limits have been added to invading/summoning, and additionally, the covenant system (composed of 8 different groups) will allow players, depending on which covenant they are in, to summon other players automatically to help out during invasions of just normal game exploration.

As for those who plan on playing the game offline, though you won’t be able to see hints or summon, the dev team did make an effort to try and make it seem as if you were playing Online with certain AI elements.

“Even when playing offline, we’ve implemented AI elements and enemy elements that will function as if the player is playing in the online space,” says Tanimura. “You won’t be able to see blood messages and bloodstains, though,” adds Miyazoe. “You won’t be invaded, but you also won’t be able to summon – and there are difficult bosses out there. But the bosses and the venue structure will be the same offline, and the challenge and sense of achievement and satisfaction when you overcome something will be there. We’ve also implemented some elements that will make you feel as if you’re online, like you might be invaded by an AI enemy.”

PlayStation Access also uploaded a video today, featuring 12 minutes of new gameplay with commentary. Check it out in the featured section above.

Upcoming Battlefield 4 Weapon Tweaks Detailed

Battlefield 4 developers DICE have detailed a number of upcoming tweaks the studio will be making to a number of the game’s weapons.

As noted a few days ago, DICE stated that they would be looking into tweaking the designated marksman rifle class in order to increase its effectiveness.

Today, in a recent Battlefield Blog post, the studio finally revealed exactly what changes they will be implementing within the class of weapon that will be a part of an upcoming update. Check out the notes below:

DMR Tweaks

  • Increased the damage of all DMRs across all ranges. Specifically, damage has been increased at long ranges to allow three-hit kills against unarmored opponents.
  • Reduced the penalty to accuracy for sustained DMR fire, allowing more rapid follow up shots in combat.
  • The amount of the damage increase varies from weapon to weapon, according to its intended range, rate of fire, and damage.

Furthermore, “Braun” a DICE employee, wrote in the blog,”We will continue to monitor the effectiveness of DMRs in combat, and determine if additional action is needed to make DMRs a viable mid to long range weapon.”

Pistols will also see a bit of a balance update, as noted in another blog entry. Check out the details here:

Pistol Tweaks

  • Increased the aimed accuracy of the M1911 to make it a viable choice once the COMPACT 45 has been unlocked. This gives the M1911 a clear accuracy advantage for range, while the COMPACT 45 has a clear ammunition per magazine advantage.
  • Increased the close range damage of the M1911, QSZ-92, FN57, CZ-75 and COMPACT 45. This will allow all pistols to bypass Body Armor at close range. Additionally, the FN57 and the QSZ-92 have had their long range damage increased to allow them to properly bypass Body Armor at all distances. Finally, the CZ-75 has also had its long range damage raised to give it a diverse role among the handguns.
  • Reduced the delay between pressing the trigger and the bullet firing for the M412 REX and .44 MAGNUM. This delay represents the way these weapons work in real life, while also improving their responsiveness in game.
  • Increased the magazine capacity of the QSZ-92 to 20 rounds, the proper amount for this weapon in real life. Additionally reduced the recoil of the QSZ-92 to give it a clear difference from the FN57.
  • Corrected a small error with the COMPACT 45 accuracy when crouched or prone. The weapon was accidentally less accurate than intended.

In addition, DICE also intends to approximately double the accuracy of all pump-action shotguns (870 MCS, HAWK 12g, SPAS-12, and UTS 15)  while on the move and aiming, thus making the slug attachment much more viable in medium range combat.

For carbine users, you can expect a slight nerf to the MTAR carbine which requires the China Rising expansion in order to unlock. It will be brought in line with the rest of the carbines as its long range damage will correctly match the other guns in the same class.

Lastly, DICE highlighted some general weapon changes that are expected to go live once the aforementioned balance update launches:

General Changes

  • Adjusted the way inaccuracy is handled when transitioning from Hip fire to Aimed fire. Previously, if a player began firing before aiming, he would keep his hip inaccuracy while aimed, until he stopped firing. This was especially obvious with LMGs on the move. Players will now only be subject to the maximum aimed inaccuracy after the transition. While still terribly inaccurate, this allows for substantially more accurate fire than the old method and should allow players with LMGs to panic fire in close quarters, provided they are aiming.
  • The Heavy Barrel’s Accuracy bonus now also applies on the move, at a reduced bonus. This should give the Heavy Barrel a wider role for players who desire accuracy while aimed in all situations.
  • Synchronized the timing of the aim down the sights animation of sniper rifles with their ability to fire with full accuracy. Players no longer need to wait for additional time after the aiming animation plays to get accurate shots. There is still a delay to achieve full accuracy, so Quick Scoping is still not possible.

Recently, DICE also announced a month-long player appreciation event this February, which awards Battlefield 4 players all month long with Battlepacks and other goodies, including shortcut kits for the DMRs and Shotgun classes for Battlefield 4 Premium members.

Once these changes are live, will you be giving the DMR class another chance? Let us know in the comment section below!

Report – The Last of Us 2 Is In Production, Scheduled For A 2015 Release

Take this with a grain of salt, though we wouldn’t be surprised if it ended up being true, but according to rumors, Naughty Dog has begun production for the sequel to The Last of Us.

The well-known Brazilian site, Omelete, states that an insider source told them that Naughty Dog are working on the title for the PlayStation 4 and is set to release sometimes in 2015. While it’s true that the team is working on DLC for the first title, along with the recently announced Uncharted game, many have stated that it’s probably not going to happen, at least in 2015. Though it should be noted that Naughty Dog is comprised of two teams, and that the team will also being working with the same engine, just upgraded for the PS4, so it’s not completely out of the question.

EA Addresses Battlefield 4 Post-Launch Issues, Calling it ‘An Amazing Game’ Despite Complaints

Members of EA are calling Battlefield 4 “an amazing game with massive innovation”, despite not-so-positive reactions coming from the game’s hardcore and more vocal audiences.

In a recent financial earnings call involving head figures of the publishing company, Executive VP of EA Games Label Patrick Söderlund along with CEO and director Andrew Wilson answered a few of the tougher question regarding Battlefield 4’s troubled launch.

Walking listeners through the events surrounding the game’s launch, Söderlund explained that “it was a very complex game, launching on 2 entirely new console platforms, as well as current-gen and PC. We were pushing innovation heavily and we’re delivering 60 frames per second gameplay for 64 players plus the ability to connect via mobile tablet as a commander into the product, coupled those with some very innovative features in the gameplay side.

“Based on our prelaunch testing, our beta performance, we were confident the game was ready when it was launched. Shortly after launch, however, we began hearing about problems from our player community, and the development team quickly began to address the situation. So what have we done since we encountered the problems is we were fortunate to have an architecture in place that allows us to adjust and update the game rapidly, and that’s actually what we’ve done. We released multiple software updates across all platforms to resolve the primary issues and game stability has significantly increased.

“The challenge that we’ve faced with Battlefield 4 were different from anything that we’ve seen before with other games. There were different issues that only manifest its scale in the post-launch live environment. We’re taking multiple steps to evaluate what occurred and incorporate those learnings into our development process for future products, so we don’t experience the same problems again. I would close on the fact that Battlefield 4 remains an amazing game with massive innovation, and we’re confident that gamers will be logging on to play for a long time to come.”

Wilson added that “The Battlefield team acted swiftly to address the issues through game updates, and they continue to make refinements as part of our live service to ensure a great game experience for all Battlefield 4 players. Battlefield 4 is an amazing game in size, scope and gameplay, and we’re confident that gamers will be playing for a long time to come.”

Earlier, DICE announced this coming February as a Player Appreciation Month as a way to show appreciation towards dedicated fans while also outlining a few incoming stability and performance improvements.

EA Explains Titanfall Console Exclusivity on Xbox

During yesterday’s earnings call, Electronic Arts commented on entering into a console exclusivity deal with Microsoft for their upcoming shooter, Titanfall.

Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President, Andrew Wilson, explained, “we made that decision when it was back a few years ago when we decided to go exclusive. We had some forecast at that time from where we thought both Xbox and PlayStation would be and that’s what we based our decision on.

Despite PlayStation 4’s popularity, highlighted by its latest sales figures, EA is not very concerned with Xbox’s console exclusively. “I think we’re still feeling very comfortable with that [decision to go exclusive]. I think — think about the deal as economically as we made. We told people last quarter that it’s a trade-off between The Sims 4, which is the product we moved out when we moved Titanfall in. And the reason that’s economically neutral on that deal in this year is that most of the expenses for the development of Respawn’s products were expensed along the way, as we do with all of our R&D.”

When asked about avoiding the issues that hampered Battlefield 4’s launch, Andrew Wilson noted, “We’re currently moving through kind of public tests of the product, and we’re seeing great results and we’re really looking forward to seeing the gamer reaction in March.”

Also during the call, it was revealed that DLC for Titanfall is in development. Titanfall releases on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 on March 11th.
