MP1st Reader Blog: Call of Duty: Ghosts Dedis and Matchmaking – Just The Facts Ma’am

Today’s Blog entry is not be from the MP1st forums, but rather from the official Call of Duty Forums, written by an acquaintance of mine, Adam “Maccabi”. He dives into the current situation regarding dedicated servers in Call of Duty: Ghosts among the various platforms it will be available on and clears up a lot of the misinformation that’s been floating around. I thought it’d be worth sharing with the MP1st crowd. Hope you enjoy!

Please feel free to check out Maccabi’s original forum post right here and be sure to give him a follow on Twitter.

Call of Duty: Ghosts Dedis, Matchmaking – Just The Facts Ma’am

Since the announcement of Dedi’s coming to Cod for the Xbox one I have seen so many comments and posts spring up all over the place which ultimately have added alot of confusion and misinformation in to the community. So here is basically a run down of everything dedi related .

Xbox one

Is getting dedi’s, These are being hosted by Microsoft using their “cloud” service Azure which has been linked into the XBL platform.. Microsoft have invested hundreds of millions into their cloud services over the last two years and have server farms located in strategically placed locations throughout the world with more coming online in the future. Azure is primarily a system that allows any company the ability to use an azure server for whatever they need, be it web hosting, distributedcomputing or in this case to host games.

To avoid going into technobabble, Azure comes with its own special operating system that can be implemented into existing applications or run as a layer over another system. This is why being able to utilize Azure for game servers on the xbox one is now possible.

At present and although Microsoft don’t readily publicize where their servers are you can find out roughly using a quick search on the net, but please bear in mind not all locations are made public so as with anything on the net take any information as a rough guide not as 100% fact. Please see further down for more information in the dedis bullet points.

Infinity Ward had alot of meetings with the engineers from Microsoft about their cloud services, it wasn’t an instant decision and honestly wasn’t one Microsoft pushed onto Infinityward/Activision. I know when IW first started talking to the engineers from MS they were asking questions the engineers didn’t even have answers to as their own systems weren’t actually finalized. The final decision wasn’t just oh there is dedis lets use them. IW really spent along time working out if it was both practical and something that wouldn’t degrade the online experience we all know and love and would ultimately improve it for most people.

PC

The pc platform is getting RANKED dedis at launch . Again as these are pc the servers will more than likely be hosted using the Azure system The option to RENT player controlled servers from a third party will be a feature possible AFTER launch (no date has been confirmed as yet ) but these will probably not be ranked servers. As Ghosts will have the ability to transfer your Character from one platform to another security of a closed system especially for PC is paramount.

More details of the pc stuff will be coming out shortly so make sure you follow @Infinityward on twitter.

PS4

At present Nothing has been announced either way for PS4, this is what it is. You should remind yourself the announcement for dedis on Xbox One was made at a Microsoft press event so obviously there would be no mention of anything ps4 related there. There have always been huge technical hurdles in getting dedis running for the console platforms something Microsoft has made a lot easier for Xbox one. Obviously for PS4 it isn’t able to access Microsofts system so to run dedis on PS4 would involve a third party server provider or for Sony to stump up hundreds of millions of dollars to build their own server farms. I have seen recently alot of people taking about Sony’s “cloud services” coming online in 2014 and wrongly assuming this relates to providing dedis- Their “cloud service” is Gaikai it is NOT a dedicated server platform it is a system designed to STREAM games being played on a server onto your screen. Gaikai will allow you to play older ps titles and to utilize the play anywhere service Sony promoted, but you should also bear in mind this service is streamed so it will have inherent latency issues attached to it as any control action has to go to the server first. This isn’t to say Sony dont have a system in place already or that they aren’t working on a system to host games As I explained adding dedis to Xbox one was a alot easier than for PS4 as the Xbox had a ready made system already in place due to microsofts Azure service.

I’ve seen a few comments along the lines of Atvi is too cheap to add dedis for PS4 ect (a comment I’ve seen numerous times in past cods tbh) The fact is the amount of infrastructure needed to host Cod on dedis costs hundreds of millions of dollars to build and then a good few million a month in operating costs, its not something you can just run out and buy . It’s worth bearing this in mind .

So will PS4 have dedi’s? At this point we don’t know. Anything you hear that doesn’t come directly from Infinity Ward is pure speculation so should be treated as such.

Dedis – the bendy bullet points

Will dedis cure lag? – Simple answer no.

People seem to think dedis are some sort of golden magical bullet that will cure every ill you experience online, this unfortunately isn’t the case at all. What dedi’s will bring to the table for consoles are things like no host migrations, from the dedis side a smooth experience that isn’t affected by the the (as in old games) hosts own bandwidth causing issues. More security in game as the ability for the nefarious to run unsigned code as hosts on chipped xboxes is gone.

The one major issue with any online gaming experience is your ping, it doesn’t matter how much bandwidth you have, how advanced your home network is ultimately your online experience if you have a stable connection is down to ping. Ping for those who aren’t familiar with the term is the time it takes data to travel from your console/pc to a server and back.

One advantage listen servers (p2p as some call it) ie the system CoD has always used over dedis is host location, While the host may not always have been the best the chances are the host would’ve been quite close to you.

With dedi’s it comes down to locations of the servers, The golden rule for dedis has always been the closer you are the better your ping is, while this maybe slightly generalized as a statement as there are other factors like your own connection quality ect this is how dedis usually work for players. Saying that though players on dedis will find their games run better and everyone will be a lot more equal as there is now no host advantage/disadvantage depending what side of the fence you were on that one.

One of the things IW would’ve looked at before deciding to go down the dedi route is server locations, if they couldn’t provide locations that gave very good coverage they would not have gone down this route. BUT thats not to say at present all geographic locations will have great coverage. Some more outlying or low population area’s will still potentionally have dedis depending on that area being covered by Azure. but you may find those servers are further afield than you would like to connect too and I would assume (*disclaimer this is an ASSUMPTION by me). That there would still be back up systems in the game to use listen servers for down times of dedis and for low pop areas or areas that are not covered by azure.

Matchmaking changes

One of the things that alot of people mention is matchmaking, and anyone who knows me from these forums knows it’s an area I have clashed heads with IW over numerous times in the past :). There has been a lot of work done on matchmaking and Ghosts will see a few new features added to matchmaking that will improve how matchmaking works. One of the most important ones for me (as its something I repeatedly highlighted) was the fact geolocation especially for european players had an inherent flaw . due to the way Ip blocks are bought and sold by european isps it was possible to be in the middle of the UK but the game thought you were in Italy. To counter this Ghosts will match make using your actual internet distance (and hops) rather than basing any matchmaking off your actual physical location. This will ensure players are better matched and potentially will be matched more locally. Iw trawled through a ton of connection metrics during MW3 and have taken a lot of feedback and comments from the community when it came to matchmaking. I spoke to Mark Rubin during my time out in La during E3 and I was very impressed with some of the idea’s he and the team had either come up with or discussed.

Now the more astute of you here might now be wondering why if we are getting dedis on some platforms (ie the confirmed ones so far before the ps4 crowd go wait a minute..) why we still need matchmaking? – The answer is even with dedis the game still needs to place you into a session (game lobby) that gives you the best experience.

Call of Duty: Ghosts – IW Executive Producer Confirms Dedicated Servers For PC In Addition To Xbox One

Speaking to NowGamer, Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin was able to confirm that dedicated servers would be available on the PC version of Call of Duty: Ghosts with more details to come at a later date.

Earlier this week, Rubin announced that, with Microsoft’s Cloud service, the studio is able to provide the Xbox One version of Call of Duty: Ghosts with dedicated servers for matchmaking.

We did mention dedicated servers on Xbox One. One thing I can say is we’re also doing dedicated servers on PC. So PC will be all dedicated servers, all of it. I don’t have details on how dedicated servers are going to work on PC, partly because we’re still in development and still working on all those features.

Currently, no mention has been made regarding the PlayStation 4 version of Call of Duty: Ghosts.

SCUF Hybrid Xbox 360 Controller Review

SCUF is a company all about innovation. Their gear has provided professional, hardcore, and even casual gamers alike with some of the best gaming experiences available on consoles this generation. While other console gaming hardware manufacture’s claim their designs to be miles ahead of their time, and to feature countless improvements over the original Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 controller design, nothing ever feels as ‘right’ as a SCUF controller does. Just ask the thousands of professional gamers who rely on their SCUF controller game after game, competition after competition, and championship after championship.

Since appearing on the market in 2010, SCUF has raised the bar and set the standards of what a true competitive controller should be. The SCUF controller quickly found its way into the hands of every gamer taking part in major competitions like MLG, EGL, WGL, Reflex, UMG, and ESL. It has even found its way into the homes of gamers who simply want a quality controller that suits their needs.

Last month, SCUF announced the Hybrid, the latest and greatest redesign of the original Xbox 360 SCUF controller which has, up until now, been based on 1st party controller designs. Already, it has been welcomed warmly with the professional gaming community and has become practically a requirement in order to stay competitive, but what exactly makes it a “Hybrid”, how is it better than the original SCUF design, and – the question you really want to know – should you buy it?

Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 10.48.12 PM

Grip and Design

Let’s start by taking a look at what’s so “Hybrid” about the controller the first place. Unlike the original SCUF controller whose casing design belongs to it’s 1st party creator, Microsoft, the Hybrid opts for a completely redesigned bottom half which is of SCUF’s own design. That means you get the familiar face and button layout of the original Xbox 360 controller design, but with a grip that far surpasses anything else on the market.

The default SCUF Hybrid model I was provided with for review features a grip coated in a high-grade paint that sticks to your skin far better than most other materials. The handle shape curves in at a steeper angle right at the last joint of your fingers, allowing you to literally hold on to the controller tighter while giving your finger tips more room to rest. It’s honestly the best feeling grip I’ve ever felt in a controller and that alone makes the Hybrid a clear choice over the original design.

Thanks to the integration of a built-in lithium ion battery, the Xbox 360’s clunky battery pack will no longer get in your way – perfect for those with longer fingers or bigger hands. It also significantly reduces the weight of the controller.

Need More Paddles

The real benefit over the original SCUF appears in the form of its new rear paddle design. The most obvious improvement is that you can now request an additional set of paddles, bringing the total number of paddle buttons to four, of which the left- and right-most ones are completely re-mappable. On my particular model, the two inner paddles were set to X (inner-left) and Y (inner-right). If you really need me to spell out the advantage of this new design, it means that, a.) you never have to take your right thumb of the right thumb stick ever again and , b.) you can change your paddle layout on the fly as you move between games. That means that you can perform all the important functions in any first-person or third-person shooter like jumping, reloading, melee-ing, or weapon switching without losing your ability to aim. Remapping the two outer-most paddles is as simple as holding down the small black button located on the left at the top of the controller, pressing the button you want to re-map, and then pressing the paddle you want to re-map to.

Another clear improvement is the design of the paddles themselves. No longer are they simply screwed on to the bottom of the controller, protruding outward from the controller’s underbelly. Instead, their strength is reinforced by being built into the shell of the controller, making it nearly impossible to pull to the side, if that happens to be a habit you might have formed previously. I also found that, for my hand size and shape, the two outer paddles rested perfectly on my middle fingers, negating any movement to reach them. On the flip side, some with a similar hand shape might find their comfort compromised as you can no longer use your middle fingers to grip the controller. In the end, it might just be a simple matter of getting used to it.

Finger on the Trigger

Keeping to the under-side of the controller, the triggers have been left untouched. My model in particular shipped without trigger stops, but being someone who plays multiple FPS games, it was for the better, as they are primarily only compatible with the Call of Duty series. My SCUF did come with adjustable triggers, however. A small alan key provided with the controller allows me to depress each trigger to the point just before the function of aiming down sight or firing my weapon kicks in, minimizing any sort of travel time.

The inclusion of stops would keep one from over-squeezing the trigger, making one’s finger lightning fast on the trigger of any semi-automatic weapon like a marksman rifle or pistol. Whether you opt for them or not, the adjustable triggers offer enough of an advantage, especially if you’re not playing at a competitive level.

A Familiar Face

The face of the SCUF Hybrid has been left relatively untouched. The default model comes in a matt black finish with white face buttons and a SCUF-branded home button surrounded by a green LED light. As with most controllers, you can opt for an adjustable d-pad as well as concave or convex thumb sticks. My particular model arrived with two concave sticks, but despite not having the extra height with a convex ‘look’ stick on the right, the grip and shape is extremely sticky and comfortable. Most FPS-heads will opt for a convex right thumb stick, as it is said to increase precision in aiming.

This is my Rifle

Speaking of options, there are a number of choices to be made with the Hybrid. Sadly this is where some of the controller’s more unfavorable aspects rear their ugly head. A Hybrid fully loaded to the brim with features will set you back a whopping $285 USD – that’s with every feature thrown in, but without any additional accessories. The base Hybrid model starts at $125 USD while the FPS Hybrid model starts at a more moderate $87 USD – $180 fully loaded.

That said, there is a very wide range of aesthetic options that will also allow you to theme your controller around your favorite competitive gaming teams. A lot of them include some pretty bright and funky colors, which you may or may not be in to.

Is it Next-Gen Enough?

At the SCUF Hybrid’s price point, it begs some extra thought and care in your purchasing decision, especially with the uncertain compatibility with next-generation consoles.

As it stands, SCUF has yet to announce any plans to support the Xbox 360 Hybrid on the Xbox One, though they have confirmed that “SCUF controller features are being developed and will be available for the next generation of consoles; SCUF Xbox One and SCUF PS4 and are likely to be released in early to mid 2014.”

So, why even craft a cutting-edge controller for a “dying” console generation in the first place? Well, SCUF is convinced that the current-generation console is, in fact, not dying and still has a couple years left in her. This is based on Microsoft’s intent to support the Xbox 360 over the next 5 years with estimates of over 20 million Xbox 360s being sold in the next 2 years. And, with a hefty Xbox One price tag of $500 USD, it would not be unexpected to see many gamers stick with the current model for at least another year or two.

So, with that in mind, you need to ask yourself a couple questions: Will you be sticking with the Xbox 360 for a little while longer and what kind of gamer are you?

If you’re anyone like me who primarily enjoys FPS games like Call of Duty, Battlefield and Halo on a consistent basis and who allocates a fair portion of your yearly budget towards games and gaming gear, then the SCUF Hybrid is a no-brainer. It will seriously improve your game in any FPS, or even TPS, and is well worth the price tag considering the amount of hours you’ll be sinking into the use of this controller.

If you’ll be hopping on the Xbox One ship as soon as it sets sail this Fall, then you may want to consider holding on to your wallet until SCUF details what they have in store for next-gen.

All considerations aside, the SCUF Hybrid is an innovative and masterfully-crafted Xbox 360 controller that boasts everything a professional to hardcore gamer could ask for.

For more information on the controller and to even customize and pre-order one up for yourself, please feel free head on over to the official SCUF website!

This review was based on a SCUF Hybrid Xbox 360 controller provided by SCUF Gaming.

Battlefield 4 – All Kits, Weapons, Attachments and Unlocks Detailed

We may still be a couple months away from launch, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take a peak at all the kits, weapons, weapon attachments and unlocks that Battlefield 4 will have to offer when it launches this October 29.

Getting their hands on the game at Gamescom 2013, Gamespot recently published an informative video showing off all of Battlefield 4’s goodies.

You’ll see a ton of different and new weapons, weapon attachments, weapon camoflauge patterns and even brand new knives for melee attacks, as well as all the kit gadgets, field upgrades and unlocks. There is a lot to check out that will get any Battlefield geek’s heart racing.

Check it out and let us know in the comments what caught your eye!

[youtube id=”JLzYLTPN6Mw” width=”618″ height=”378″]

Big thanks to Gamespot.

Beware, you’ll notice that a few of the weapon assets have yet to be correctly updated.

What’s interesting to us is the wide variety in variations of different attachments like sights, suppressors, and grips. It also appears that each kit will have a greater number of non-class-specific weapons at their disposal, including carbines, shotguns and designated marksman rifles. That should prove for very versatile loadouts in each kit.

Also, click here if you’re interested to find out what maps we think are being remade in Battlefield 4’s Second Assault expansion!

Blizzard Announces Diablo 3 Expansion Pack: Reaper of Souls, Adds New Playable Class and Act

Today, Diablo 3 fans will have something to look forward to. Blizzard – keeping true to their words – have just announced during Gamscom 2013 that an upcoming expansion pack for Diablo 3 is set to be made available in the near future

The expansion called ‘Reaper Of Souls’ is said to be a ‘feature-rich expansion’ and will introduce a new playable class called the Crusader, who will be a mid-range melee class with a combat style centered around shields, flails and mid-range spells, bringing the total number of playable classes up to six.

Along side the new playable class, Diablo 3 players will also receive a new act and get to fight against new enemies such as the Seraphs, Executioner and fallen Death Maidens, as well as a new reigning enemy, the Malthael, who is working to reap demons and humans alike.

Additionally, those who already reached the current level cap of 60 and have been itching to level your character once again will be pleased to know that Reaper Of Souls will feature an additional ten levels, bringing the level cap up to 70.

That’s not all, though. Blizzard is also working on offering more options for Diablo 3’s endgame, which will see an upgrade to the game’s paragon system where it will now be account-wide and will have no restrictions in terms of paragon points used to tweak statistics of your characters. The endgame upgrade will also include 15 to 20 minute loot runs.

Speaking of loot, Blizzard will be putting a bigger emphasis on the loot drops in Diablo 3 with this expansion, dubbing it ‘loot 2.0’, which will see players receive fewer drops in quantity, but see a better quality in drops over all. It will also offer a higher percent chance that any legendary item drops will be geared toward your character class.

Lastly, Reaper Of Souls is also set to introduce a new artisan, the mystic, who is able to transmogrify items which will change their appearance and enchant them which re-rolls their affects.

We’ll be keeping our eyes open for more Diablo 3: Reaper of Soul news in the coming days. For now, check out some new footage of the expansion

Activision Announces Call of Duty: Ghosts Upgrade Plan for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4

If you’re dead set on getting Call of Duty: Ghosts on the PlayStation 3 this November 5, but are concerned over dropping the extra cash for a PlayStation 4 version down the road, Sony and Activision have a plan you may be interested in.

Today, Activision has announced an upgrade plan, similar to plans already announced by retailers like Amazon and GameStop for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One versions, that will allow gamers to upgrade their PS3 version of Call of Duty: Ghosts to the PS4 for a limited time at a low cost of only $10 USD.

“Today we’re announcing that anyone who buys Call of Duty: Ghosts for the PS3 will be able to upgrade to Call of Duty: Ghosts for the PS4 for a limited time at a suggested retail price of just 10 dollars, 10 euros or 10 pounds,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, Inc. “Retail programs, announced by Amazon and GameStop allow our players to upgrade from the Xbox 360 to the Xbox One version of Call of Duty: Ghosts for $10 as well.

As previously announced during the game’s global multiplayer reveal, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg confirmed that “for a limited time our players will bring all of their Season Pass Content and all of their in-game progress with them within a console family, for no additional charge.” That, along with the $10 upgrade plan should make the transition over to next-consoles a fairly smooth one for both PlayStation and Xbox gamers.

With that in mind, where whill you be purchasing Call of Duty: Ghosts first?
