Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Update 1.065 Adds Squid Game 2 Content as the First Content Drop of 2025

[summaraize]

Treyarch has rolled out Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 update 1.065 on all platforms this January 3, 2025. For those on consoles, you should be able to pre-load the file right now, and this houses the Squid Game 2 collaboration content. Clocking in at 2.6GB (PS5), players can expect a new Event Pass for the Squid Game 2 cosmetics, new operator bundles and limited-time modes tied to the hit Netflix series.

Note that the Black Ops 6 Squid Games 2 Event Pass has both a free and “premium” track that goes on top of the Battle Pass, Black Cell Battle Pass. Yep, it’s getting pricey, though they are all entirely optional.

Don’t forget that given how Activision has set up the Call of Duty HQ launcher, you will need to update your client even if you don’t own Black Ops 6. This means that Modern Warfare 3, MW2 and all the other Call of Duty games housed in the launcher will be update to version 1.065.

Black Ops 6’s First Update of 2025 Brings Squid Games 2 Content and Other Items

Players can install the patch at 12 pm EST/9 am EST/1 am HKT.

MULTIPLAYER

Modes

  • Red Light, Green Light (NEW)
    • Young-hee is watching, so don’t misstep at the wrong time. Get on the pitch in the Red Card stadium and play three rounds of Red Light, Green Light, each two minutes long.
    • In Round 1, no one gets a weapon. In Rounds 2 and 3, you can pick up weapons on the ground and eliminate other competitors with melee attacks and Finishing Moves. There’s just one simple rule: When Young-hee says “Green Light,” the fight is on. Move a muscle after she says “Red Light” and you’re toast.
  • Pentathlon (NEW)
    • Prove that you have what it takes in the long run by competing in a series of Multiplayer modes to find out who reigns supreme! Play Domination, Kill Confirmed, and Hardpoint along with two new mode variants: Piggy Bank Team Deathmatch and Roulette.
      • In Piggy Bank TDM, every elimination adds score to the Mega Piggy Bank; fight for possession of the huge payout when it drops part way through the match.
      • In Roulette, one-shot eliminations via the Roulette Handgun award double the points, though with each fired shot there’s a chance it’ll blow up in your hands!
  • Squid Game Moshpit (NEW)
    • Fire up the Squid Game Moshpit including Team Deathmatch, Domination, and Hardpoint with a twist as players gain access to three important Squid Game-themed features:
      • Red Light, Green Light Scorestreak: Is the fight getting too hectic for you? Stop the enemy in their tracks with this Scorestreak that calls “Red Light,” commanding all enemy players to stop moving or risk elimination.
      • Piggy Bank: Eliminated players have a chance of dropping a Piggy Bank that awards a small score boost when picked up. For a bigger payday, watch for the Mega Piggy Bank. Every elimination adds additional score to the Mega Piggy Bank, so once it drops, fight for it to acquire all the deposited score within.
      • Roulette Handgun: The epitome of high risk, high reward. The Roulette Handgun spawns in the center of the map; grab it to activate a permanent UAV effect while wielding it and land one-shot eliminations against enemies, earning more than double the normal score to help you obtain Scorestreaks more quickly. The catch? Your location will be marked for everyone to see, and every shot has a chance to blow up the weapon, taking you down with it.
  • Prop Hunt
    • Improved spatial audio on Prop whistles.
    • Addressed an issue where Prop UI could remain present when switching rounds to the Hunter team.

Call of Duty Hidden Skill Rating Explained and Can Now Be Accessed

[summaraize]

Today, we’re going to share one of the most exciting discoveries in Black Ops 6 and the entire Call of Duty franchise—how to see your hidden skill rating in the game. You know how Activision puts you in certain skill tiers? Now, there’s a way to know which tier you’re in and not just for Black Ops 6, but even for older games.

But that’s not all. You can also access a ton of data, including details about every single game you’ve played on your account since the launch of Call of Duty: Vanguard.

Call of Duty Hidden Skill Rating for Black Ops 6 and Older Games Surface

call of duty skill rating

Call of Duty content creator TheXclusiveAce (with the finding by JIEgOKOJI) recently shared a video explaining how players can finally check their skill rating in the game.

To do this, players need to visit the Activision website and submit their data on the official site. After that, they must select their country, review the terms and conditions, and agree to them.

Next, click on “Access My Personal Information,” and log in to your existing account. Keep in mind that this is the official Activision website, not a third-party site, so there’s no need to worry about linking your main account.

After completing the steps, you’ll need to wait a day or two to receive an email containing data for every game you’ve played since the launch of Vanguard. The email provides a file in HTML format, which contains extensive details about your Call of Duty gameplay history. This data includes your hidden skill rating, the number of games played, your in-game performance stats for each match, and even sensitive information like your IP address.

The HTML file can easily be converted into a spreadsheet for better accessibility. However, due to the inclusion of personal data, it’s important not to share this file with others.

This new way of finding our skill rating in the game is a huge step in determining how skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) works. Having said that, we wouldn’t be surprised if Activision finds a way to circumvent how players can access this report in the future. I mean, they can keep all the data and just remove the skill rating score, and that would be it.

Black Myth Wukong Game Director Says Xbox Version Delayed Because of 10GB Memory Optimization Issues on Series S

[summaraize]

While Black Myth Wukong is only available on PS5 and PC, the action game is still set to be released on Xbox Series X|S, though Game Science hasn’t said anything about it…at least until today.

In November, Xbox boss Phil Spencer teased the Black Myth Wukong Xbox version, though he also said he can’t discuss it. One person who can talk about this is the game’s director Feng Ji, who posted what appears to be confirmation that the delay is due to the Xbox Series S.

Black Myth Wukong’s Xbox Series S Technical Struggles Shared by Game Director

Over on Chinese social platform weibo, Feng Ji posted the following message:

Translating the important part of the message (via DeepL), Feng Ji states, “Although there is no big surprise, after all the take down or a little bit of emotion, you combat power horrible as such, only missing the XBOX robe …… seems a little bit shouldn’t (but that 10G of shared memory ah, without a few years of experience in optimization really can’t take down.”

As you can see, the game director pointed to the Xbox Series S’ shared memory, which is why Xbox gamers still haven’t gotten one of the year’s best games. If you’ve played the PS5 version, this really wouldn’t surprise you, as even that version has some technical issues; what more if the game was tasked to run on much inferior hardware?

This message from Feng Ji confirms a report last year that a memory issue was the main thing holding up Black Myth Wukong’s release on Xbox, and not any timed exclusivity deal, as some said exists. Before the game’s release, Game Science published an FAQ stating that they were optimizing the Xbox Series X|S version and that the studio plans to announce a proper release date once the Xbox version meets their quality standards.

My guess? Given the Xbox brand isn’t big in Asia, as most console gamers play on a PS5, Game Science isn’t exactly burning the midnight oil in porting Black Myth Wukong to Xbox. That said, if I was Microsoft, I’d let Game Science just release it on the Xbox Series X, as it’s better a good chunk of Xbox gamers can now play it, rather than none at all.

Black Myth Wukong is a huge achievement for China’s game development scene, as Game Science’s debut AAA game has managed to set new Steam records, and is reported to have already earned close to $1 billion in revenue. If Microsoft issues a statement about Feng Ji’s message, or if something noteworthy surfaces from this latest development, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.

PlayStation CEO Don’t See Consoles Disappearing Anytime Soon; PS5 Likely to Last Through Next-Gen Similar to PS4

[summaraize]

While cloud technology is getting better and better each year, will it reach a point that it will replace traditional gaming consoles? Sony’s PlayStation boss doesn’t think that’s happening anytime soon.

In an interview about PlayStation’s 30th anniversary with Japanese publication Famitsu, Hideaki Nishino, Sony Interactive Entertaniment (SIE) Platform Business Group CEO, was asked a few things about the future of the brand. One of these questions is about the next generation of PlayStation and how it might not be based on hardware but on the cloud. Continuing with that thought, Nishino was also asked if Sony has plans to continue developing a home video game console or if they think there will be a major structural shift.

PlayStation CEO Believes Gaming Consoles Won’t Be Going Away Anytime Soon

PS5 Portable

Nishino states (translated by DeepL), “As of today, many PS4 games are being played, and the number of PS5 games is increasing rapidly. It is unlikely that this will suddenly change tomorrow, so there is no doubt that home video game consoles will remain at the center of our business for some time.”

Continuing with the thought, Nishino adds, “However, we are also seeing an increase in the number of PCs and other different styles, so we are in the process of thinking about how to increase the number of PlayStation users overall, including those on the PSN. Some people may misunderstand me when I say this, but if you have cloud gaming on PS Portal and PS5 games running, some people may think that we have already entered the era of cloud gaming. However, you still need a controller and a screen in your hand, and we believe that hardware will not disappear just yet.”

Speaking of the next-generation of the PlayStation console, Nishino was also quizzed about how the lifecycle of gaming hardware is getting longer compared to past generations, with the PS4 a perfect example of this. Nishino notes that while he believes the PS5 will have a long lifecycle, it won’t affect the timing of the next iteration of the console, which we presume will be called the PS6.

PlayStation Boss Doesn’t Think the PS5 Will Affect the Release Timing of the PS6

playstation pc

Nishino says, “We believe that PS5 will have a long lifecycle, just like PS4. However, I don’t think it is right to delay the timing of the launch of the next product that incorporates new technology because of the long time it will take. The timing for the launch of new hardware is related to the time frame in which technology evolves and the time frame in which we are able to implement that technology. Therefore, I think it is important to offer new products while people play the ones that are currently being used, and to expand the total number of games we offer.”

When pressed whether this meant that gamers will be able to use the PS5 while also using new hardware, Nishino answered, ” For example, PS4 has been in the process of automated production, and the quality of the hardware is high. That is why it can be used for a long time. Of course, PS5 will be produced automatically from the beginning. From now on, we would like to expand our business by combining the longevity of long-lasting products with new technologies.”

Referencing how the PS4 Pro has been in development for four years already, the interviewer implied that the next-gen version of the PlayStation console is already in the works, to which Nishino replied, “We believe that products should be offered in a balance of technology, price, and timing. We are always considering when we will hit the spot we think we will hit.”

There is no doubt in my mind that Sony is already hard at work on the PS6. I mean, it’s standard practice even back then that companies develop the next iteration of their hardware the moment the retail version is completed.

In cloud gaming, massive steps have been taken in the last few years, but we’re far from seeing it become the norm. Not to mention that you’ll need to always be tied to a stable internet connection, and I agree with Hishino that dedicated gaming consoles won’t be going away anytime soon.

Do you agree with both of Hishino’s statements or is he just saying that because it’s to protect his vested interests?

The First PlayStation Plus Free Games of 2025 Include Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and More

[summaraize]

This January 1, Sony revealed the first batch of free games for PlayStation Plus subscribers, including Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, alongside other titles that should become available to members starting January 7 until February 3, 2025.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Is Now a PS+ Plus Freebie for January 2025

We’ve expected it to be in the PS Plus free games list a bit sooner, but Rocksteady’s often-maligned live service shooter Suicide Squad: KTJL is officially part of the list starting next week!

For the rest of the titles, head on below.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League | PS5

(Read the MP1st Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League review)

Take down The Justice League yourself in single-player or team up with friends in multiplayer co-op in this genre-defying, action-adventure third-person shooter from Rocksteady Studios, creators of the critically acclaimed Batman: Arkham series. Featuring an original narrative set within an expansive open-world city of Metropolis, the game puts the four DC Super-Villains on a collision course with an invading alien force and DC Super Heroes who are now laser-focused on destroying the city they once vowed to protect. All the while, the Suicide Squad must be mindful of the lethal explosives implanted in their heads that could go off at the first sign of defiance. Each squad member has their own unique moveset with enhanced traversal abilities to freely explore the dynamic open-world of Metropolis, along with a variety of weapons to customize, and skills to master.

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered | PS4

Feel the thrill of the chase and the rush of escape in Need for Speed Hot Pursuit. Unleash a savage sense of speed both as an outlaw and a cop in the world’s hottest high-performance cars. Outsmart the heat or take down lawbreakers with the tactical weaponry at your disposal in a heart-pumping, socially competitive racing experience. Updated with enhanced visuals, cross-platform multiplayer – including the asynchronous competition powered by Autolog – plus all additional DLC content, this is the ultimate edition of Criterion Games’ critically acclaimed Need for Speed debut. It’s time to reignite the pursuit.

The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe | PS4, PS5

The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe is an expanded re-imagining of the critically acclaimed, award winning indie game The Stanley Parable from 2013. Everything that was in the original Stanley Parable is here, preserved just like it was back in 2013. But The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe also dramatically expands the world of the original game with new content, new choices, and new secrets to uncover. The labyrinth has just gotten bigger. In addition, the game has been visually upgraded to reflect modern technology while faithfully preserving the tone of the original game. Accessibility features have also been added to the game, including localization of in-world text, colorblind options, and content warnings. And just as before, the impeccable voicework of Kevan Brighting will accompany you every step of the way.

Just a reminder, Suicide Squad’s seasonal content has concluded, though there is an offline mode, so you’ll be able to play it regardless of what happens to the game.

You have until January 6 to claim them for last month’s games before Sony pulls them from the service and they’re gone forever.

Call of Duty: Blacks Ops 6 Odd and Ridiculous Skins Are to “Maximize Fun for Players”

[summaraize]

It’s no secret that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has been…quite interesting lately in terms of  what’s available in the in-game store. When players head over to the shop tab, they are granted things like a unicorn operator bundle that comes with rainbow guns that turn players they shoot into little fairy-like creatures and their finisher being a deadly unicorn rainbow fart? The game has gotten very interesting (putting it mildly) when it comes to cosmetics.

This isn’t exclusive to Black Ops 6, as outrageous skins featuring characters from Diablo, the WWE, and more have made their way into the game since the Modern Warfare reboot, and it has gotten significantly worse over time.

In a chat with Dexerto, Miles Leslie, the Associate Creative Director at Treyarch, mentioned that these far-out skins in Call of Duty are meant to “maximize fun for players.”

“Fun always comes first for us. Of course, we want to stay grounded in the DNA that makes a Black Ops game unique when it comes to core gameplay, but we also like to break the rules if it’s going to maximize fun for players.

Recent skins making waves include the Dragon Knight, Cruiser, The Replacer, and more. At the same time, the skins do not provide any real gameplay advantages and give players the ability to look completely different, along with a unique finishing move to stand out.

While there’s nothing wrong with players having options to look different, the Call Of Duty community is currently not happy with the direction the franchise is going regarding cosmetics.

Players Aren’t Happy About Call of Duty’s “Ridiculous” Skins

One issue the community has with the skins is how they make picking out enemies from friendlies a bit harder, and in a twitch shooter like Call of Duty, hesitating even a second is all the difference between a kill and a respawn. Running across the map and seeing someone dressed as a unicorn isn’t exactly a clear indicator which faction that player is on.

Needless to say, the community isn’t receiving this “explanation from Treyarch. One Reddit post said, “I think they meant to say…maximize profits for them.” Outside of the skins, Black Ops 6 and especially Warzone still have issues that need attention. Black Ops 6 has a few glaring technical issues that needs to be sorted out, and Warzone has a cheating problem that’s yet to get better.

With the skins getting out of hand, players are becoming more uncomfortable that developers are putting skins first versus what the game needs fixing. Players have a point, as Call of Duty was supposed to be a military first-person-shooter before it became what it is now: a Fortnite-like game with military elements.

Given how much money Activision makes with these skins and other cosmetics, we’re not expecting the publisher to change course anytime soon.

Astro Bot Power-Ups Were Inspired by DualSense Functionality

[summaraize]

Like any platformer, Team Asobi’s award-winning game Astro Bot also features power-ups to help clear stages faster and much more manageable. While some of the power-ups in the game were thought up to match Astro Bot’s jump-focused gameplay, some of them were inspired by the PS5 controller, the DualSense.

Team Asobi revealed this in a recent interview with Japanese gaming publication Famitsu, in which the studio was given the spotlight after its Game of the Year win at The Game Awards earlier this month.

Team Asobi Shares Inspiration Ideas for Astro Bot Power-Ups

The studio was asked about the variety of power-ups available in the game and how Team Asobi came up with the ideas. Lead Game Designer Hiroaki Yatoku shared that the entire dev team brainstormed for ideas. Also chiming in was Nicolas Doucet, the game director of Astro Bot, who said (translated by DeepL), “There are two ways to come up with ideas for power-ups. The first is power-ups that match a jumping action game, such as the Bulldog Booster, Twin Frog Gloves, and the Chicken Rocket. These may be common actions in themselves, but by combining them with the DualSense wireless controller, I think it created a fresh experience.”

Following up with the statement, Doucet added, “The second is power-ups that were born from research to express the functions of the DualSense. For example, the idea for the sponge came from a tech demo. The goal was to express the feel of a sponge, and the experience was so fun that we adopted it for the power-up.”

It’s worth noting that Team Asobi’s Astro’s Playroom is a pre-installed game that comes with every PS5, and was also used to explain the various features of the DualSense controller. Speaking of the game, we published a deep dive look into Astro’s Playroom haptic feedback implemented by Team Asobi that you’ll want to check out.

While Team Asobi pumped out weekly updates that delivered new content in November, the studio dropped one more major update for the Winter Wonder patch. There is no word yet on whether we’ll get more Astro Bot content in 2025, but I wouldn’t bet against it.

GTA 6 Trailer Now Available in Much Higher Quality; Comparison Screenshots Show Extra Details

[summaraize]

In December of 2023, Rockstar Games unveiled our first look at Grand Theft Auto 6, which quickly amassed millions of views. Unfortunately, Rockstar has remained silent since then, with fans thirsty for anything new related to the game. While we don’t have a new trailer that got leaked or anything, Rockstar did release a higher quality version of the debut trailer and it reveals more details about the upcoming open-world action game.

Rockstar has uploaded a higher-quality GTA 6 trailer on the Chinese social platform BiliBili, and not only do we have it in its uncompressed glory below, but we’ve also listed some of the noteworthy new details uncovered from it.

GTA 6 Higher Quality Version Uploaded on Chinese Social Platform BiliBili

Alongside the uploaded better version of the trailer, we also have comparison screenshots! Thanks to X user GTA 6 Countdown, we have screenshots from the YouTube trailer, and the better version uploaded on BiliBili.

Check it out below where you can just drag the image cursor to see the before and after comparison.

GTA 6 High-Quality Trailer Yields New Comparison Screenshots

From the BiliBili trailer image, you can now see the pimples from the woman:

A better image quality gives us a more detailed look at Lucia’s face:

Comparison images show more detailed skin visuals and hair on male protagonist’s (Jason) face:

In the image below, you can see stretch mark’s on the NPC ‘s (non-playable character) thighs:

I’m sure there’s a lot more graphical details that can be observed based on the higher-quality trailer, but we’ll leave that up to you to discover.

While we haven’t gotten a new trailer or news update from Rockstar about GTA 6, parent company Take-Two Interactive is “highly confident” Rockstar will be able to deliver the game in 2025. With a game of this magnitude, it’s no wonder some game companies are reportedly holding off on their release dates as to avoid the Grand Theft Auto juggernaut.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to be released in fall 2025 on the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. While no PC version has been confirmed, Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick mentioned that they will make “more announcements” in due time, suggesting the PC version is indeed on the way, though much later. This isn’t surprising, as past entries in the series have followed the same release formula.

Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 New PvP Content Incoming in 2025

[summaraize]

While Saber Interactive has been providing stellar post-release support for Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, most of it is focused on the PvE (player vs. environment) side of the game. That’s about to change in 2025, as the studio has confirmed we’ll be getting fresh PvP content for Space Marine 2 once the new year kicks in.

Space Marine 2 New PvP Map and More Promised in 2025

Saber Interactive has given a sneak peek (pictured above) at the new map incoming to players. This will be set in a closed environment with many narrow passages pushing players to engage in more closed-quarter battles.

Aside from a new map, players will get Horde Mode, though there’s no date yet. There’s also a new Prestige Rank incoming in Season 3 that will let players upgrade their classes even further. There are also new Operations, new enemies, and a new difficulty level with new rewards on the way, too.

Saber Interactive also shared the next Champion set to be deployed for Space Marine 2, and it’s The Salamander Champion! This sniper will be available in PvE and PvP.

  • 1/ His cape is very cool (super important).
  • 2/ An obvious choice for the Sniper Champion would have been to be a Raven Guard, but we have different plans for them.
  • 3/ Everyone loves Salamanders, us included, and we really wanted to give them a Champion. Heavy and Tactical would have been good candidates, but Heavy was already taken, and we have a different idea for Tactical.

Here’s an early look at the character:

Saber promises that more customization elements, such as the Mark VI Convus, will be added throughout the year.

Finally, the Datavault will be added on the Battle Barge in 2025 as well. This will consist of a new area with unlockable info on most elements from the game. Players can unlock them with a special currency earned through in-game achievements.

As you can see, there’s a lot of stuff on the way for Space Marine 2, and what’s even better is that it’s all free as long as you own the base game.

If you haven’t played the game recently, the massive Obelisk Patch 5.0 content was pushed out, which you can read about here.

Once we know more about the incoming new content for the game, we’ll be sure to let our readers know. We’re expecting a patch to ber released in January 2025, so stay tuned.

Report: Marvel Rivals Bots Are Snuck in by NetEase in Quick Match to Ensure a Win After Multiple Losses in a Row

[summaraize]

If you’re part of the millions of gamers currently playing Marvel Rivals, chances are you’ve experienced a few consecutive losses when playing Quick Match. While that’s part of the experience and isn’t indicative of someone’s skill level, given you could have been part of a bad team composition where everyone wanted to play as a damage character, or someone not taking matches seriously, there are still times that even if the entire team tries their best, it will still translate to a loss.

Based on new data uncovered, it seems NetEase has implemented a way for players to feel better about themselves if this happens multiple times in a row, and that’s by inserting bots who will play so bad that it guarantees a win.

Marvel Rivals Has Bots Pretending to Be Real Players in Quick Match

The new report comes from community member , who collected data after a week of playing and observers the following:

  • Bots only appear in Quickplay not Competitive
  • After two consecutive losses, your chances of being put into a bot lobby in Quickplay are very high.
  • If put into a bot lobby, it will be 4 human teammates + 2 bot teammates VS 6 bot opponents.
  • You will be penalized for leaving these bot lobbies.
  • All bots are Account Level 1.
  • All bot profiles have “restricted access” (as opposed to “limited access” for human profiles).

The person who collected the data is rallying for the community to spread the word and get NetEase’s attention. In ciaranxy’s opinion, here’s what NetEase’s plan is with bots:

  1. NetEase most likely knows that there are bots in Quickplay.
  2. These bots in Quickplay help to retain players by inflating their sense of skill.
  3. Players invest time into the game which makes it more likely players will buy the BattlePass/spend money on the Store.
  4. Players will eventually find out about bots, but NetEase will not make any changes until the community is REALLY angry about it.
  5. NetEase will then relent, apologize, and patch the bots out.

We’ve brought this topic up to content creators of the game, and while they wish to remain anonymous, they agree with the bot claims, and have said to have experienced it themselves. Mind, it seems the person who collected the data isn’t even against bots, but more on how the game pits you against bots without letting you have a choice about it.

We’ve reached out to NetEase since the report went up the other day and have not heard back. If we do, we’ll update the article to relay what the developers have to say about it.

As someone playing a lot of Marvel Rivals, I would want to know if I’m playing with or against bots. Hopefully, NetEase addresses the claims soon.

Despite Concord’s Failure, PlayStation to Continue Focus on Live Service Titles, Alongside Story-Driven Games

[summaraize]

While Firewalk’s Concord might be one of the biggest gaming busts in history, it seems it’s not enough for Sony to halt development of live service games (Games as a Service or GaaS). On the contrary, the PlayStation division will focus on GaaS games, though this doesn’t mean there’ll be less emphasis on story-driven titles.

In a recent interview with Japanese gaming publication Famitsu, Hermen Hulst, co-CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, was asked about Concord’s failures, and whether there are any changes in the PlayStation division’s strategy for live service games.

Expect More Live Service Games From PlayStation

Hulst replied stating (translation via Google), “The game business is constantly changing due to various factors, including technological advances, new genres and ways of playing. However, one thing that remains constant is people’s desire for great entertainment experiences, and attention to games continues to grow. However, this has also created competition, and like many companies in the industry, we have had to make changes to our business to solidify a more sustainable operating base.”

Adding to that, Hulst mentions how “Going forward, we will continue to focus on developing live service titles along with the story-driven single-player titles that our players want,” and cites Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers 2 as one example of a live service game that has found success.

“We are learning a lot as we establish the ability to develop high-quality live service titles within SIE. Helldivers 2 attracted many players through continuous content provision and achieved results that support the potential of live service titles,” notes Hulst.

Given how much money live service games rake in, it’s not surprising that Sony still wants to push through with more games fitting the mold. Unless we’re mistaken, Bend Studio (Days Gone) is working on a project with a live service element based on job listings, and on what we’ve found about the studio’s in-development project so far.

While live service/GaaS games have a bad rep among gamers, it isn’t a bad model to chase after, as long as it’s done right. Some games that managed to pull it off include Helldivers 2, Apex Legends, and most recently, NetEase’s Marvel Rivals. Who knows? Maybe Bungie’s Marathon will be the big breakout hit Sony has been chasing after regarding live service games, though we expect even if that’s the case, it won’t stop there.

Metaphor: ReFantazio Developers Would Like to Make a Sequel, With Hopes of It Becoming A Flagship Series for ATLUS

[summaraize]

Metaphor: ReFantazio, which is Atlus’s first original IP since 2011, was a resounding hit, not just with critics but with fans that helped propel the title to become one of the publisher’s fastest-selling games. Given its success, it’s not surprising that talks of potential sequels and even spinoffs are already filling the minds of not only fans but also the developers, as the studio has come out to say that they would like to see more games in the franchise in hopes it can become Atlus’s third big RPG series.

No Sequel Announcement for Metaphor: ReFantazio Just Yet, But It All Seems Very Likely

Metaphor: ReFantazio Review

In a recent interview with Famitsu Magazine, game director Katsura Hashino discussed a potential follow-up. He noted that while he would like to make another and has many ideas, there are no “concrete” plans.

“I have a lot of ideas, but since it’s only been five weeks since the release (at the time of this interview), I don’t have any concrete plans… But I hope that will happen.” He continues, explaining he’d like the new IP to become a new flagship title for the company: “This project started with the idea of creating a third JRPG series following “Shin Megami Tensei ” and “Persona,” so I would like to develop it into a flagship title representing our company.” – Translated via Google

While he doesn’t confirm if a sequel is happening (and as he said, why would he so soon after release?), it does seem likely that we will be getting one, given the commercial success it has so far. That and the development team clearly aren’t done with the franchise, especially if they had initially conceived it as a series rather than a one-and-done game.

It’ll likely be a few years before we hear anything about a potential sequel. Given Atlus’s history and handling of Persona and Shinigami Tenshi, we’ll probably see some rereleases and potential spinoffs to hold us over until then.

In the meantime, fans can look forward to 2025, which will bring an expanded (to more regions) release of Persona 5: The Phantom X, and hopefully some more exciting news from Atlus and their Persona team.

If you haven’t already, though, check out Metaphor: ReFantazio! Our reviewer, who gave it a near-perfect score, mentioned it being as one of the best games to release this year.

SEGA Aims to Re-Create Virtua Fighter Community in 2025

[summaraize]

A few weeks ago at The Game Awards, SEGA surprised gamers by announcing that a new game in the Virtua Fighter franchise is being developed at RGG Studio (Yakuza, Like a Dragon). While no actual title or info has been revealed, it’s enough to excite community members.

While there’s still not a lot of info about the in-development new game in the franchise, SEGA seems to be gearing up for it big-time in 2025. In a recent developer feature by Japanese gaming rag 4Gamer, many Japanese game developers were asked about their plans for 2025. One of the people asked is Moriji Aoki, Project Producer of Virtua Fighter.

Virtua Fighter Franchise Will Be Active in 2025

When asked what his ambitions are for 2025. Aoki said (translated by DeepL), “We will use the 30th anniversary of “VF” as an opportunity to further accelerate the development of the Virtua Fighter franchise with the release of the Steam version of “Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O.” We will start with our participation in “Frosty Faustings XVII 2025”, one of the largest fighting game community events in the U.S. We will also participate in “EVO Japan 2025” while holding a VF global tournament “VF Open Championship”. In addition, through the opening of the official VF Discord, we will connect with Virtua fans around the world and re-create the Virtua Fighter community!”

While nothing has been confirmed, Aoki’s statement suggests we’ll see (and possibly be playing) the new Virtua Fighter game in 2025. At the very least, we should see SEGA and RGG engage with the community about the franchise, which hasn’t happened in a while.

For reference, the latest mainline entry in the franchise is Virtua Fighter 5, originally released in arcades and the PS3 in 2007. Since then, we’ve gotten iterations of it with Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown (2010), and Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown (2021). In January 2025, SEGA will Virta Fighter 5 REVO on PC, though we hope that’s not the only Virtua Fighter release for the entire year.

There’s no title yet, though I wouldn’t be surprised if SEGA names it Virtua Fighter 6. Then again, it could start fresh and rename it something else entirely.

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii Will Be 30% Longer Than Its Predecessor

[summaraize]

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is set to be longer than its predecessor, Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. According to RGG Studios director Masayoshi Yokoyama, this growth wasn’t planned but naturally arose from the compelling narrative and additional content that define the franchise.

In an interview with Automaton, Yokoyama explained that The Man Who Erased His Name succeeded in part due to its compact structure and focused story. However, Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii takes a different approach, featuring a main story that’s 30% longer than its predecessor’s roughly 13-hour runtime.

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii Promises a Larger World

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii

The new pirate-themed installment also introduces a variety of side activities and mini-games that fans of the series love. Highlights include the debut port of an arcade classic, the return of pizza delivery runs, and a dating simulator with surprising realism. With all this additional content, completing the game could take over 30 hours.

Yokoyama emphasized that the team avoided generic side missions like traditional “fetch quests” to artificially extend gameplay. “The map is huge, there’s a bunch of places to visit, and there are still features we haven’t announced yet. The volume increased by itself,” he said.

With a larger map, an engaging story, and activities designed to entertain both loyal fans and newcomers, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is shaping up to be one of the franchise’s most expansive experiences yet.

In related news, Yakuza creator Toshihiro Nagoshi says the focus on bigger, longer, and more challenging games might soon fade, as players start paying more attention to other things that make games fun.

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii will be released on February 20, 2025, for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC. Pre-orders are now available on their respective platform stores.

Xbox Is Set to Release New Controller Under Codename “Sebile” for Next-Gen Xbox Console

[summaraize]

With a new year comes new hardware from major console developers, and recently, Xbox has been seemingly working on some new and interesting products for its consumers. One of these new products is a new Xbox controller mentioned in the leaked court documents from the Microsoft vs. FTC case regarding the software giant’s acquisition of Activision-Blizzard.

This controller from Xbox was revealed last year under the codename “Sebile,” it is said to still be under production even if the planned mid-gen console refresh is not pushing through.

At the time of writing, the new “Sebile” controller is speculated to be released along with the next-gen Xbox console release. We still have no idea if this controller will be part of a console or play a part in the Xbox Handheld console which is also in development as well.

New Xbox Controller New Features From Leaked Microsoft Documents

This controller is doing something called a direct-to-cloud gaming experience, which allows the controller to be able to be played anywhere and easily paired with any device. It also allows the player to interact with the feelings of the game surrounding them more than previous Xbox controllers have, through various vibrations and more.

In previous controllers from Xbox, it wasn’t an easy task to repair one of their controllers if broken, and this new “Sebile” controller is supposed to allow gamers to repair their controller with ease, bringing new durability to it.

Lastly, this controller also ensures it continues to have that same Xbox controller feel all players are accustomed to now. Another important note for this controller is that it will be getting a few features from other devices such as StadiaOne of these features will allow the player to play games over Wi-Fi and allow the controller to directly point to connected devices. However, it is important to note that this controller is only known to the public based on patents that were leaked last year. With all of the features still unknown, it will be nice to see what Xbox is willing to bring to the table regarding next-generation hardware.
