Treyarch Investigates Black Ops 2 Matchmaking and Freezing Issues on the PlayStation 3

Treyarch is investigating matchmaking issues on the PlayStation 3 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

This Call of Duty forum thread with already over 2000 replies details some of the issues many PlayStation 3 users are currently experiencing. According to reports, many are having trouble finding matches online and are constantly being presented with the following message upon trying to find a game session:

An error occured when trying to find a session. Please try again.

Recently, Treyarch game design director David Vonderhaar responded to concerns on Twitter, saying, “we’re testing back-end changes to help allow alleviate some of the matchmaking issues. No time table yet.” He later added, “we are indeed up and running, but we are also aware not everyone can connect. We are investigating something with our partners at Sony.” Fortunately, it looks like some progress is being made. Vonderhaar’s latest statement read, “we are currently testing backend matchmaking changes that we think can help with this. I don’t have a time table, or I would tell you.”

Those still experiencing system freezes, another known issue with the PlayStation 3 version of Black Ops 2, will have to wait for an upcoming patch to alleviate the problem. A few hours ago, Vonderhaar tweeted, “we found and fixed one known PS ‘freeze’ so far. Unfortunately, it can’t be hotfixed and hast to be patched.”

Be sure to check back often so we can keep you updated. Are you a PlayStation 3 user? Have you been experiencing any matchmaking or freezing issues?

Thanks, Wez, for the tip!

Halo 4 Tops Xbox Live Charts, Medal of Honor: Warfighter Nowhere in Sight

In this week’s Xbox Live activity, a space marine jet packs to the top of the charts while a modern day military vet bows out.

Halo 4 claims its spot as the most played Xbox Live title this week, unsurprisingly. What is surprising is that Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb notes that “this is the list for the week before Halo 4 launched.”

Sadly, it seems as though Medal of Honor: Warfighter, released only 3 weeks ago, has been knocked clear off the list.

Xbox 360 Top LIVE Titles (based on UU’s)

  1. Halo 4
  2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
  3. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition
  4. Call of Duty: Black Ops
  5. EA Sports FIFA Soccer 13
  6. Assassin’s Creed III
  7. Modern Warfare 2
  8. Halo: Reach
  9. Battlefield 3
  10. NBA 2K13
  11. Borderlands 2
  12. Madden NFL 13
  13. Skyrim
  14. GTA IV
  15. Gears of War 3
  16. FIFA 12
  17. Happy Wars
  18. Forza Horizon
  19. Halo 3
  20. Forza Motorsport 4
For top arcade titles and indie games this week, visit Major Nelson’s blog right here.

It will be interesting to see Halo 4 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 compete for top spot next week. Do you think Halo 4 has a chance at staying on top? Are you sad to see Medal of Honor: Warfighter go?

Second Grand Theft Auto V Trailer is Awesome, Multiplayer To Innovate

After being delayed, the new trailer for Grand Theft Auto V is finally here and, oh my, does it not disappoint.

[youtube id=”Vzue74y7A84″ width=”600″ height=”350″]

Very impressive, and judging from the tone, this will be a very different GTA from what we are all use to.

Check out the new screens too.

So what’s the news on Multiplayer? Well, speaking with IGN, series producer Leslie Benzies stated that the team is looking to innovate, but isn’t quiet ready to discuss it. Leslie did have this to say though:

Refining open world multiplayer into something really special has been a huge focus of development and we are very excited to share more information with people soon.

The ability to switch between different characters allows the player to do things that wouldn’t have been possible in any other GTA game, and on the multiplayer side we hope that GTA V will do for multiplayer open world games what GTA III did for open world single-player games,

What are your guy’s thoughts on this? I see Jets are making a return, but there are tons of other secrets hidden in this trailer.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 PC Aimbot Spotted in Under 24 Hours

Update

The video was quickly removed. Sorry guys!

This video sent in by MP1st reader nickbunyon pretty much speaks for itself.

Within 24 hours of its release, a hacker has already managed to bring an aimbot into Black Ops 2’s multiplayer. Nickbunyon was luckily able to capture it right here:

[youtube id=”vyv2bodB2hk” width=”600″ height=”350″]

So far, Treyarch has been showing greater support for the PC community with Black Ops 2, including promises of tighter security. Recently, an incoming patch was announced that would increase the field of vision to 90 as well.

Unfortunately, a successful hacking/modding attempt this early on isn’t a great sign. But we can hope that Treyarch will get on top of things quickly and address such issues.

BioWare Sends Free PC Copy of Mass Effect Trilogy To Those Affected By Black Ops 2 Manufacturing Error

Are you a PC gamer? Chances are, you bought Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 today. Though not as great, there is also a chance that one of the two discs included within your Black Ops 2 package was, in fact, a copy of BioWare’s Mass Effect 2.

Needless to say, a huge manufacturing error has resulted in several reports of gamers experiencing an error when asked to install disc 2 on their PC. These folks on reddit, as well as on many other online communities, have reported that the on-disc content shows up as Mass Effect 2.

A “Mass” Surprise

BioWare has caught wind of the news and has decided to act upon it. In a recent blog announcement, BioWare wrote,

Rumor has it that about a thousand customers who purchased Call of Duty: Black Ops II for PC today were also treated to a surprise copy of Mass Effect 2. If you were one of the affected, chances are you thought it was a mistake, but we prefer to think that it was an omen, and when the universe talks, you should listen.

If the universe thinks that you should be playing Mass Effect right now, who are we to argue? In fact, we want to help! The first fifty fans affected by this phenomenon to send us a picture holding their special disc 2 will receive a code for a FREE PC copy of Mass Effect Trilogy.

According to BioWare, this picture must clearly contain yourself, plus disc 2 of your Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 copy package. If you got that down, you can send your photo to community@bioware.com for a chance to be “playing your very own Mass Effect Trilogy in time for the weekend!”

Were you affected by this strange mix-up?

Crytek Plans the Next Crysis Title and Aims for a “Much More Radical” Future

Crysis 3 has yet to hit store shelves, but already we are looking to the future and at what developers Crytek have in store to advance the series.

Studio head Cevat Yerli tells Eurogamer that plans for the next Crysis title have been set in motion, though no pre-production has begun and neither has the company decided on a publisher or any business models.

Yerli details the sort of outlook Crytek has on the Crysis series: “…we are excited about the DNA of Crysis and of the franchise. There can be literally tonnes of titles out there within the franchise. Unlike Far Cry, this time around we feel very flexible about Crysis.”

The next title is not to be a direct continuation of Crysis 3’s story, Yerli explains. “I wouldn’t name it Crysis 4 at this stage because it would be misleading. We want to finalise Prophet’s story and Crysis 4 would imply the story just moves on.”

He adds that, “Normally in this time right now we would already have pre-production going on, but because we want to make this something much more radical and new we are looking at it as a bit more of a long term thing. It’s too early to talk about it for these reasons.”

He also touches on the shift to the Free 2 Play model, something Crytek has shown interest in earlier. “The truth is much more complicated,” he said. “There’s a transformation period for the industry. I believe F2P is our inevitable future. I believe there are F2P titles out there that can be story-telling, co-operative with your friends and competitive with your friends. It’s all possible. The business model is independent from the way you design games. It’s a very important thing. People always make these things dependent, but it’s actually completely independent.

“The most important aspect is there is a psychological transformation of the customers and the publishers that has to happen before everything is F2P on every platform,” he said. “We are promoting these steps with other titles we’re doing right now.”

He also reveals the company’s interest in the eventuality of a F2P Crysis game, stating, “we do have a plan for a F2P version of Crysis, but how this looks and when this will be done, whether this is the next one or the next next one, is to be decided. But we have a very clear picture of how this will look in a transitional period where retail and free-to-play can coexist for one title.”

For now, we can look forward to Crysis 3 dropping this February, 2013. Check out some of the pre-order bonuses in action right here!

New Mass Effect In Development, Will Be Built on Frostbite Technology [Update: Multiplayer Confirmed?]

Update

After the following Twitter statement: “In response to questions we’ve received, ME3 MP was very much a shared effort between Edmonton & Montreal,” we light-heartedly Tweeted at Roy, asking, “Is [the multiplayer] going to be just as awesome in the new ME?”

He responded, “I can assure you we are not trying to make it any less awesome!”

This could possibly be seen as confirmation of multiplayer returning to Mass Effect. Though no official announcement has been made, it is most certainly likely and expected, considering its success in Mass Effect 3.

If you haven’t heard the big news yet, BioWare has revealed that they are indeed working on development of the next Mass Effect installment.

Though details are extremely scarce at this time, BioWare Montreal studio director Yanick Roy has shed just some small information on the title.

In the recent blog post, Roy had this to say:

There is really not much I can tell you about the game right now, except that it will be built with the amazing technology of Frostbite as its foundation, enhanced by many of the systems that the Dragon Age III team has already spent a lot of time building.

The other thing I can tell you is that, while it will be very respectful of the heritage built over the course of the first three games, with the original trilogy now concluded and the switch over to a new engine, we are exploring new directions, both on the gameplay and story fronts. You can still expect the pillars the franchise is known for to be fully intact though, including diverse alien races, a huge galaxy to explore, and of course rich, cinematic storytelling.

The Frostbite 2 engine, originally developed by Digital Illusions CE, recently powered two of EA’s flagship shooter, Battlefield 3 and Medal of Honor: Warfighter. So far, every Mass Effect title in the trilogy have been developed with the Unreal Engine. This no doubt marks a good move.

For those unfamiliar with BioWare Montreal, they worked on some of the Cutscenes and post-DLC for Mass Effect 2, and took charge of the multiplayer portion for Mass Effect 3, which we’ve been covering very closely.

Having some solid multiplayer experience under their belt, this brings us to ask if multiplayer might become a bigger part of the next Mass Effect title.

How did you enjoy Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer? Would you ever like to see it become competitive instead of co-operative? Should the next Mass Effect title even have multiplayer? Let us know in the comments below.

Black Ops 2 – Possible Balance Issues?

If the rumor mill and people currently enjoying Black Ops II in all it’s pre-release glory are any indication of how the game plays, the general consensus is that the SMGs are more powerful than their big brother the Assault Rifles and that the ASRs overall just can’t compete with guns outside of their class.  Bottom line, that doesn’t sound very balanced.  That said, it should be expected that BOII isn’t going to be perfect on release day, no Call of Duty ever has.

[youtube id=”Td7lITihJ30″ width=”600″ height=”350″]

What’s different about BOII in comparison to previous COD titles, however, is that everything, from the way the perks work to how the guns fire is tuneable post-release.  BO1 and MW3 had a lot of flexibility put into them for post-release tuning, but Treyarch game design David Vonderhaar has made it a point that, in part, what makes BOII special is that everything is tuneable post-release.  Additionally, we all know that a lot of pressure has been put on Treyarch to make a solid game because of the negative stigma surrounding MW3.  If BOII fails in the way that MW3 did in not capturing peoples’ interest and entertaining them long-term, the COD franchise might be in trouble.  Maybe BOII won’t be the end, but if falls short, it might be the beginning of the end.

If anything’s for certain though it’s that BOII is going to receive an unprecedented amount of attention and support post-release by Treyarch and if there are any issues, assuming they can fix it, they will at the very least try.

What are your thoughts?  Are you worried that BOII might be imbalanced based on what’s been circulating online these past few days?  Let us know in the comments!

Thank you for reading.

Halo 4 Infinity Review

Patch Notes

Review

Five years. Five long years. That’s how long we’ve been waiting for the inevitable. That inevitable is Halo 4.

Since 2007, we were teased with its existence. It was never a question of “if”, but of “when”. But that “when” is now, and after years of waiting, Halo 4 has finally landed. I can tell you, its definitely been worth it. Halo 4 is massive, and that’s an understatement. Its so big, I can’t even begin to describe how amazingly ambitious and huge it really is. So much so, that in a weird way, it feels like the first time in a long time that an FPS game has shipped as a completed and polished package that delivers on every level. It’s one of the few games to attain such a level of hype, and ambition, and one of the few to actually deliver on all fronts. It’s also a contender, if not winner of Game/Shooter of the Year. Trust me it’s that good.

So where to begin? How about where it counts, and with what matters most; the gameplay! So, in a nutshell, the gameplay remains largely the same as the past Halo’s – Armor Abilities, weapon pickups – the whole nine yards. What’s different, you might ask? Everything. For one, the AA (Armor Abilities) are well balanced. Nothing is overpowered like the Armor Lock from Halo: Reach. In fact, all of the AAs are well balanced against other players and the actual gunplay. The Hardlight Shield, for example, replaces Armor Lock and favors mobility while in cover, instead of stationary invincibility, allowing players to move while holding a shield in front of them, though they are slowed down and cannot fire weapons. Other additions, such as my personal favorite, like the Thruster Pack, allows players to go in any direction they please for only a few feet. Most players seem to disregard this ability as useless and would rather use the Autosentry (a floating stationary  turret that is extremely efficient at suppressing enemy players), but I find that the Thruster Pack is much more useful and has saved my life on multiple occasions. Its’s a great way to get out of sticky situations with your shields down. Now, I will say that the Regeneration Field is a bit of a let down, as it only pushes opponents back and does a poor job of protecting it’s users. But, then again, this was the same way in Halo 3, albeit without the pushback. Overall, the AA’s do a great job of switching up the gameplay and making each encounter different and challenging.

A few of Halo 4’s weapons and armor variations

Obviously, the gunplay is one of, if not the most important aspect of the game. And do the guns deliver! Returning weapons like the DMR, Battle Rifle, Covenant Carbine, Assault Rifle or the new additions like the Light Rifle make each and every player feel like a true blue Spartan as you murder your friends with such visceral ease and accuracy. New weapons like the Covenant Storm Rifle are lackluster and useless as for some reason, the Covenant like carrying non rechargeable weapons on the battlefield. Power weapons like the Sticky Detonator are wickedly cool as you can purposely miss a shot and still blow your friend up six ways to Sunday, add to that the new UNSC SAW LMG, which eviscerates multiple opponents in mere seconds and the fear inducing Forerunner Binary Rifle. I can safely say this beast puts the fear of God in me (trust me, when you see that orange light, you better do two things: 1. Make sure that’s your buddies, or 2. get behind something fast, because the end result derezzes you into digitized bits). The new Forerunner weapons are excellent and satisfying, as when you earn a kill with one, your opponent turns into digitized bits, which in my opinion is the new “you just got owned” moment to experience. If Reach had the super cool assassinations (which also return), then Halo 4 has players being utterly vaporized into nothingness. Back all this up with the outstanding vehicles, new and old like the fan favorite Warthog, and the new lumbering mech called the Mantis that absolutely devastates infantry and vehicles alike, and you’ve got yourself one solid game gameplay experience.

If you haven’t noticed by now, Halo 4 is gorgeous. It looks so good in fact, I daresay it rivals Battlefield 3 and is probably one of the best looking titles on the Xbox 360 to date. How 343 squeezed this beautiful thing out is beyond me, but the fact that I can play it with a smooth frame rate (some drops during really intense moments) at a surprisingly 30 frames per second is astonishing. While I can clearly see the difference between the Frostbite 2’s engine at 30 fps and 60 fps, Halo 4 manages to look solid through and through and always looks its very best. From an artistic view, the game introduces new elements into the mythology of the Forerunners, along with new architecture and backgrounds that are stunning. This not only makes this the most beautiful Halo game yet, or the most artisticly creative one, but also one of the best looking games this year.

One of Halo 4’s bigger, vehicle-based maps, Ragnarok

Going hand in hand with the graphics is the excellent sound design. Again, I can’t express how good this game sounds both in its score and its explosions! When you rev up the Railgun and fire it at your friend, you feel it blasting from your hands just as much as your opponent feels it slamming into him. The guns, mortar cannons, vehicle ignitions – everything sounds absolutely incredible, even more so when you can hear the music which, to some people’s dismay, was done by Neil Davidge and not Marty O’ Donnel. But believe when I say, just like Halo 4 itself, the score is a natural evolution for the franchise, and Davidge nails it.

There are 13 maps that come packaged in the game (10 multiplayer, and three forge) and unlike Reach, which used the exact areas from the campaign, Halo 4’s maps are brand new arenas and are just as crazy as ever. With large vehicle excursions on maps such as Longbow and Exile, to smaller arena maps like Adrift and Haven, each map is varied and unique, having multiple pathways and shortuts that can cater to anyone’s play style. I will say the maps are much more vehicle based this time around, and I actually enjoy that, as Reach was really lacking in that department. Also, new game modes like the insanely fast-paced but incredibly addictive Regicide makes its debut, along with the new Flood mode, allowing players to become the Flood and attack survivors! Add in Dominion, a territories-like game that gives players access to bases with turrets and vehicles when they capture bases, along with the old favorites like Slayer and CTF, and you’ve got a deal! Now, some additions such as automatic flag/ball pickup, along with a throwable ball make their debut and, surprisingly, make the game even more fun than usual and help end the game in a plethora of yelling and screaming,  just like the good old days. Couple that with the depth of customization like weapon skins, armor, unlockable emblems (which I may never understand as to why I have to unlock something like an emblem for use), and tactical and support upgrades (use Dertexity. Believe me. It’s a life saver) and you have one of the most balanced games in the Halo series, if not the entire year. The specializations that become available after reaching rank SR-50 will certainly keep you give you something to look forward to and provide a whole new palette of abilities to experiment with.

Halo 4’s brand new Flood mode, the spiritual successor to Infection

Most people know that the Halo community is one of the most vocal communities out there, but also one of the most creative and interactive. As with a new Halo title, you can expect a plethora of new maps, films, screenshots, and gametypes to come from them for months to come, but with that, 343 tried something different: a wildly crazy idea that at this rate, if it works, then I no doubt expect to see it implemented in other games to some degree as well.

That idea is Spartan Ops. As with each numbered entry in the franchise, the developers once again attempt to change the way we play games (Halo: CE was the entirety of the FPS genre, Halo 2 was multiplayer and Halo 3 was social innerworkings of the community with Forge and Theater). Five new episodes each week detailing six months after the events in the campaign following the UNSC Infinity. While the extent of the plot is yet to be known, the little I played was fast and fun, getting better the higher in difficulty you go up. Coordinating with your friends on taking out a Promethean Battlewagon has never been so fun. The only problem I could have is how the experience could be kept fresh, but I know better, as 343 doesn’t need to prove themselves, they already have. If kept up, this could potentially lead us to Halo 5, which judging by the events in the campaign, I can’t wait to see where Chief’s next adventure awaits.

Good old Red vs Blue, but in a whole new battle

I, like many Halo fans, was initially scared and cautious of Halo 4 when it was unofficially announced at the end of Halo 3. We wondered what would happen next. When it was officially announced and news trickled out regarding the game, many became concerned that it would become too much like the competitor; Call of Duty. I mean, why would a beloved franchise like Halo copy off the game that copied off of it. Well, I’m here to tell you Call of Duty it is not. Halo it is. And if anyone needs to be doing the copying, its Call of Duty. Trust me when I say Halo is back, and its the best thing not since three, but since Halo: CE. It’s that good. So lets give it up for 343 Industries as they’ve done the impossible: They made a better Halo game than Bungie. Well done 343. Well done. And as for Halo 5? Lets not wait another five years, because this wait was damn near unbearable. Welcome home Halo.

Gunnar Optiks Eyewear Review – Do They Really Work?

So, I know what you’re probably thinking: Why am I doing a review on a product that hit the scene a few years back? To me and many other gamers, we don’t have much money to throw around at expensive gaming accessories, especially since most of us just play casually. Recently, I picked up a pair of Gunnar Optiks after many years of skepticism and doubt. I’m here to answer to those doubts and all of those today who are unsure about whether this product truly makes a difference and if it’s worth the suggested retail pricing.

Last weekend was pay day and I had some extra money to toss around. I looked at my gaming setup and I asked myself what I was missing. I had a Razer Onza controller, an Astro headset and everything else you could think of. Then, I remembered Gunnar Optiks. For those who are unfamilar, Gunnar Optiks are gaming glasses that you wear which supposedly enhance contrast and colors, reduce eye fatigue and to help protect your eyes from harmful lighting. I figured all of this was just hype to sell a product. I’m here to say I was wrong. After about a week of having these bad boys, I can confirm that I cannot game without them. Not only do I not get headaches like I used to, but my eyes feel much more rested and I can game for a much longer duration. They also help out in color and contrast, but to me, that is just an added bonus.

The product I am personally reviewing are dubbed the MLG Phantoms, pictured above. Most of these gaming eyewear products come at a $79.99 USD price point, which could be a bit hefty for some glasses. Don’t fret. If you have extra cash and you are looking to help yourself out both gaming-wise and health-wise, go ahead and pick yourself up a pair. Do not hesitate.

On to the actual review of this product. The number one feature that tops my list is the comfort level I feel when wearing these. They are extremely lightweight and headset compatible. What does that mean, exactly? The side bands do not wrap around your ears. They go straight back. This helps out tremendously due to the fact that the headset will not push the side bands into the side of your head. The lightweight comfort of the glasses tops my list of favorite features, with the headset compatibility coming in a close second.

Another favorite feature of mine is the style. I bought these particular Gunnar’s due to their stylish look. They don’t look embarrassing on you and they look great. Now, I’m not saying you should wear them out to the club or to go grocery shopping because they are obviously gaming eyewear. Going to LAN events and sporting these will have people asking you which pair you got.

The amber colored tint, at first, was a con for me due to the fact that I was not used to it. After a day or two, I got quickly used to the amber color and really figured out why they chose that color. This tint helps with the contrast and color enhancement. Due to the harmful lighting and brightness that comes off most HDTV’s, the amber colored tint cancels that out and even improves upon the visuals you see. The screen isn’t nearly as bright and the contrast is increased, helping you make out items at distances much more efficiently. Of course, they sell this as a core feature, but I see it as an added bonus.

Now the big kicker: Do they really help eye fatigue and improve focus? YES! I noticed in my one week experiment that when I wore my Gunnars, I blinked far less often and I could game for much longer durations. I played one day without my Gunnar’s to see if I noticed any big changes and the first thing that came to my attention, from a quick bathroom break, was that my eyes were beginning to turn red, which is something I did not experience while wearing the Gunnar’s.

Needless to say, my Gunnar Optiks have quickly become one of my most favorite purchases all year and I do not doubt my purchase one bit. I regret not having bought a pair sooner, and I’m here to squash any doubt or skepticism you have. I tried a pair, and I think you need to as well. It’s the only way to really experience what I’m talking about. Below is a hands-on video of what comes in the box, what the box looks like as well as the actual product itself.

Rainbow 6: Patriots May Move to Next-Gen Hardware, Ubisoft Hopes “It Will Surprise the Industry”

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything of Ubisoft’s next installment in the Rainbow 6 franchise, Rainbow 6: Patriots.

Luckily, Polygon was recently able to dig up some interesting bits if info while speaking to Ubisoft CEO, Yves Guillemot.

“The only thing I can say is that we have a good team working on it, and it’s really looking good,” Guillmot told Polygon. “So when it will come, it will surprise the industry.”

Guillmot was also asked about the possibility of Rainbow 6: Patriots being a next-generation title, to which he responded, “there’s a good chance it can be.”

Last year’s preliminary target gameplay was leaked to Kotaku, later officially released to the public by Ubisoft, which demonstrated a bold new vision for the series, taking it in a direction that required players to make some heavy moral choices while in-game.

We here at MP1st are very excited about Rainbow 6: Patriots and plan to give you top notch coverage, so make sure to keep your sights locked right here!

Do you have your eyes on the next Rainbow 6?
