Treyarch Game Design Director Details Black Ops 2 Spawn System and the “3-Second Rule”

During a recent IGN live streaming event of Treyarch’s upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, game design director David Vonderhaar went into some interesting details regarding the type of spawning system that you can expect in Black Ops 2’s multiplayer.

Spawning (re-entering a match after a death) can easily make or break a competitive first-person shooter like Black Ops 2. It can swiftly become a source of major frustration if players are constantly spawned either too far away from the action or too close to harm’s way. It’s never fun when a death is caused by a faulty spawn system and it’s something that must be handled with care.

Previous Call of Duty titles have always implemented slightly different spawn system set-ups – some more successful than others. Some titles have required significant patching before it was considered smooth. It can also differ from game mode to game mode within just one title. So, how do you get something so tricky and so touchy right? David Vonderhaar gave us a small glimpse into what the team at Treyarch had in mind when developing Black Ops 2’s spawn set-up during the live stream.

Vonderhaar explained that, ideally, a player should never feel so far away from the action that he or she needs to run miles just to get back into the fire fight, but one should never just be dropped immediately into harm’s way as well. That’s pretty obvious, right? While he couldn’t get into the mathematics, he did specifically mention the “3-second rule.” According to Vonderhaar, data is constantly being gathered during play tests to measure how often someone is shot at (or able to shoot at someone) within 3 seconds of spawning. The ultimate goal here is to make sure that that does not happen. If action is met within the 3-second mark, it might prove a little too fast-paced for most players.

Vonderhaar mentioned that, so far, the rate of successful spawning it pretty high, so hopefully that will be kept up after launch. We’ll see in only a few short days when Black Ops 2 drops November 13 on the Xbox 360, PC and PS3.

What do you guys think? Does that sound like a reasonable rule? Which past Call of Duty do you feel had the best spawn system so far?

Blizzard Confirms Diablo 3 Expansion But Gives No Time Frame

After some impressive sales figures reported in Activision Blizzard’s third quarter 2012 financial results, Blizzard president Mike Morhaime confirms the development of a Diablo III expansion, but gives no expected release time frame.

As with Diablo and Diablo II, both titles which have received content add-ons a year after release, Diablo III seems to be following suit. While the timing cannot be confirmed to be similar, an expansion is, indeed, in the works, according to a recent Activision Blizzard investor call.

When asked about plans to expand Diablo III a year after release, Morhaime answered, “We do have a plan, an expansion plan for Diablo.” However, he added, “I don’t have any timeline to talk about. I think that the most important thing for us always comes down to the quality of the expansion, of the gameplay, and so that will be a big factor in terms of driving our schedule.”

Such was the case for Diablo III in the first place with a final release date being nailed down rather late in hopes to maximize the game’s standards of quality. Luckily, this attention to polish and shine seems to have paid off as Diablo III became the “#1 bestselling game in dollars and units on the PC in the U.S. and Europe,” according to the latest sales figures. Additionally, “for the third quarter, Blizzard Entertainment had two of the top five PC games with Diablo III and World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria.”

Still, Diablo fans wait for the final pieces of the Diablo III package to arrive; in particular, player-versus-player arenas.

Are you still playing Diablo III? Let us know in the comments!

Is Console Gaming Doomed?

There is no denying that consoles are designed specifically to make the user experience as simple as possible. That is their purpose and it’s why they’ve been so successful over the past 20 years. With a console, there are no hardware upgrades (short of buying newer consoles), there are no drivers, peripherals are all plug and play, games are readily available from several outlets, and they are designed to be plugged into whatever TV system is popular at the time they’re released. Consoles, by their very nature, are designed to be 1 time purchases. The end result is a simple device that does a lot of what gaming PCs do for less money and hassle, plus (recently anyway) they can replace your DVD/Bluray player, Netflix box, and home audio solutions. This simplicity and functionality has taken console gaming from a niche market to the biggest gaming market around.

But times are changing.

The leap from the days of the SNES and Genesis to the Playstation and Gamecube marked a major technological leap in graphics and gameplay complexity. Games with true 3 dimensional graphics and high quality audio became the standard. The Xbox 360 and PS3 brought console gaming into the HDTV arena, in addition to bringing the power of the internet to the average console gamer. The PS2 did this quite well, but the connectivity was a peripheral and broadband internet was a rarity in most homes at the time. So what are the “Xbox 720” and PS4 going to offer to keep them relevant?

Currently, I’m building my own gaming/workhorse computer. When all is said and done, it will be several times more powerful than current console hardware and will easily outpace the next generation of consoles in every “power/capacity” regard. In total, I’m spending around $900 on this PC. $900 might sound like a lot, but considering the next-gen consoles are probably going to debut for ~$500-$600, be half as powerful, and not upgradable, I think it’s a perfectly reasonable alternative to buying new consoles when they come out. The main reason, however, for building your own PC instead of buying the new consoles is 4K UHD.

Right now, 1080p is basically the standard HD resolution that most TVs support. That’s going to change in the next few years. 1080p is basically a very low resolution compared to what’s going to become widely available, 2K UHD and 4K UHD, or 2160p and 4320p. To help understand the difference, here’s a nice graphic:

My concern is that the next-gen consoles won’t be able to support 4K UHD output and that when 4K UHD TVs become the standard, either the console makers will have to release brand new systems or will get killed off because the consoles on the market will look like garbage on most TVs (higher-end 4K UHD TVs will provide decent upscaling, but those TVs will be absurdly expensive). All of this of course depends on how quickly affordable 4K UHD TVs become available. If they become the standard right after the consoles release and the consoles can’t keep up, new hardware will have to be developed. If it’s a few years down the road after the new consoles release, the transition will be more gradual and less expensive.

Based on current hardware trends, computing power gets about 20% faster every year. Considering that the current consoles have just barely managed to stay relevant by just barely supporting 1080p, I’m worried that next-gen consoles will only last for a few years rather than the 7-10 that the current consoles have been out for. What this means is that the $500-$600 price tag for consoles is only going to drop to about $400 at the end of a console’s shelf-life. Considering consoles are selling for around $200 now, I’d say that’s a pretty significant jump in cost-per-lifespan. The point is that consoles are going to be expensive for longer, which means less holiday savings, which means less sales overall (this is why the Wii was such a success, it was cheaper and more family friendly, despite being inferior graphically).

In other words, unless the next-gen consoles support 2K or 4K UHD for $600 or less and their price drops to under $400 within 4 years of their release, they’re going to be paperweights when UHD TVs become the standard. This could spell the end for HD console gaming. Mobile gaming is becoming more and more popular and it looks like it’s poised to replace consoles as the defacto gaming system in our homes. What purposes current consoles serve will be replaced with all-in-one media hubs built into TVs or standalone boxes like the Apple TV. Gaming will either be done on a mobile device or a custom built PC. And gaming will go through a major change over the next few years. Of course consoles will always be less powerful than current PC hardware, but they’ve always managed to be comparable. If they don’t support 4K UHD, however, their lack of horsepower isn’t going to be ignorable this time around.

Essentially, hardware and hardware standards are improving much faster than they were 10 years ago and the idea of a single device lasting more than 5 years these days is pretty absurd. After all, there’s a new iPhone every 6 months. Consoles can’t keep up with the new faster hardware upgrade cycle without either being more expensive upfront (future-proofing with high-end hardware) or being modular (upgradable over time as hardware improves). Both option defeat the purpose of the console in both price and ease of use.

To prevent the demise of the consoles, their makers need to support at least 2K UHD out of the box for the next-gen system OR provide an optional upgrade when 2/4K UHD becomes the standard in most homes (think the Wii’s Motion Plus or Xbox’s Kinect) that can be bundled with the core system for the holiday season. Current consoles are already serving plenty of home entertainment content, so those services just need to expand and become more streamlined. Hopefully Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are paying close attention and have plans to support future hardware improvements in a way that’s cost effective and efficient. If they aren’t, they’re screwed.

What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments!

Thank you for reading.

Play Halo 4 Multiplayer and Earn Free Microsoft Points

As if Halo’s multiplayer wasn’t already addicting enough, Microsoft has found a new way to dangle that carrot in front of your nose.

If you happen to be a member of the Xbox Live Rewards Program, Microsoft will now be giving away free Microsoft Points just for playing Halo 4 multiplayer.

It’s quite simple. Playing over 35 hours of Halo 4 multiplayer will earn you 100 MS Points while playing over 70 will net you 300 MS Points. Last, but certainly not least, playing over 140 hours will score you 600 MS Points.

Additionally, you will receive 100 MS Points back after spending over 1500 MS Points on Halo content in the Xbox Live Marketplace. You can also earn 200 Points back for spending 3000 MS Points.

Finally, 800 MS points will be rewarded to anyone who’s spent over 3000 MS points and has played over 35 hours of multiplayer combined.

Sound like an interesting deal! This offer lasts until November 30 and is exclusive to members of the Xbox Live Rewards Program, so you’ll need to make sure to sign up if you decide to go for it. And, hey, we know tons of you out there are going to be spending hours and hours in Halo 4’s multiplayer this month. Might as well earn some real-life cash (sort of) for it.

[Updated] Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Weapon Camoflauge and Reticle Patterns

Interested in some Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 weapon camoflauge patterns?

MP1st reader Luke Leblanc has sent us this image (originating from @AzurePC) displaying all of the initially available Black Ops 2 weapon camoflauge patterns. While this only show’s off the camos for the Ballista bolt-action sniper rife, they can be applied to all other weapons including secondaries.

If you remember back to one of our previous multiplayer info articles, “Every weapon in the game, including atypical weapons like launchers, knives and assault shields all have challenges for camoflage patterns. Once these base camos are unlocked for a weapon, a whole new set of challenges are unlocked to complete for special camos, including some interesting hidden ones.” Therefore, there will most likely be a wider selection of camos (after completing challenges) in the final release of Black Ops 2 this November 13.

Update

AzurePC has also kindly included some in-game images of each camo as well as all of the different reticles for some of the different weapon sights. Check out the gallery below!

Any favorites so far?

If you haven’t yet, make sure to check out the latest Black Ops 2 multiplayer map loading screens.

Halo 4 has, at last, launched with a bang, but not without it’s fair share of hiccups.

In case you didn’t know, Halo 4 multiplayer is popular and it is not uncommon for big shooters such as this one to have a hard time dealing with the sudden influx of players and the large server load.

On top of connection issues and general delays, players have been reporting that their own data is being incorrectly displayed as well. Many report being permanently stuck at SR-1, the lowest rank in Halo 4 multiplayer, despite the progress they’ve made thus far.

We hope to see things turn around shortly as 343 Industries does have a team looking into the issues. On Twitter, they report, “We are aware of the servers issues & currently investigating. We will keep you updated. Thanks for your patience.” Similarly, they’ve responded to reports on the official forums, stating, “We hear you and apologize for the inconvenience. The team is currently investigating the issue and this thread will provide updates as we work on a fix. Stay tuned and thanks for your patience.”

Update 1

343 has provided a quick update via the Waypoint Blog:

As you can imagine, there are a tremendous number of new players connecting to Halo 4 right now. We’re aware that some users are experiencing occasional issues connecting to the Halo 4 services, and we are currently narrowing down possible solutions. We will be providing regular updates across all our channels, so stay tuned to the following places for the latest information:

Update 2

343 Tweeted late last night,

Multiplayer Games You Might Have Missed – Week 7: Text-Based Multiplayer Shooter

Forget Frostbite 2. Forget Cryengine 3. The text-gen shooter is here.

Based entirely on text, Text-based Multiplayer Shooter (yes, that’s what it’s called) is exactly what its title says: a free-to-play, browser based multiplayer shooter that takes things to a whole different level.

All the essentials are here, including a lobby and all your basic FPS mechanics like maneuvering, shooting and reloading. Players can enter text like “turn east,” “go west,” “look,” “fire” and “reload.” All of this is done in real-time, meaning you’ll have to be quick on your fingers. It is also possible pull up a map of sorts made entirely of hashtags that can display your current position.

Developer Elgen Lenk explains, “So. This so called game is a text-based multiplayer shooter, inspired by the classic XKCD comic which I always found hilarious. You move around by typing commands like GO NORTH and TURN WEST. By typing LOOK you might find other players nearby. Turn to face them and type FIRE as fast as you can. If you hit anything, fire again, this time even faster. You can forget how good you are aiming with your mouse – typing speed matters in this.”

You can play Text-based Multiplayer Shooter for free right here.

If you’ve tried it, let us know what you think! More exciting that Call of Duty?
