Modern Warfare Voice Actor Further Debunks Modern Warfare 4 Rumor

The voice actor who played Captain Price in previous Modern Warfare titles has further debunked the Modern Warfare 4 rumor he was misquoted to be working on, which Infinity Ward was quick to ridicule.

The voice actor Bill Murray explained on Twitter, picked up by IGN, that the report is “not accurate,” noting that he “told the guy I was doing a special new Modern Warfare for China, not MW4″ and that “the guy I spoke to on the plane was very nice and I’m really pleased he loves the game but the facts have got a bit confused somewhere.”

Murray also noted that “I couldn’t have said I was meeting them Monday as I was on a Monday evening flight to London! Sorry for the confusion!”

With Black Ops 2 around the corner, what do you think Infinity Ward’s next effort will be in 2013, another Modern Warfare or a new spinoff?

GTA V – Trailer Drops November 14, Expected to Sell Over 20 Million in 12 Months

Rockstar has officially announced that the second Grand Theft Auto 5 trailer will hit the internet on Wednesday, November 14th.

In addition, NowGamer has asked EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich about how GTA V will fair in the first 12 months. “The HD market is softening as we enter into the tail end of this generation, but fortunately this softening has had little impact on our precious AAA titles,” Divnich stated. “In the case of GTA V, I have little concerns about when it is released. GTA IV already proved to the market that even an April release, which has historically been avoided by the industry, can support a 20M+ title.”

“Whether [GTA V releases in] April, June, or even Winter, I’d expect GTA V to sell in upwards of 25M copies in its first 12 months,” Divnich added.

Do you think GTA V will smash records once again?

Black Ops 2 PC – FOV Maxed at 80, FPS on Ranked Matches Might be Capped at 120

Update

PCDev has made a quick correction regarding the FPS cap for ranked matches:

Correction: Yesterday I said that FPS would be capped at 120 for ranked matches. The cap will actually be 200 FPS for ranked matches. This cap is needed to prevent monster rigs from degrading dedicated server performance. Frag on, please.

Treyarch’s PC developer, or PCDev as he’s known on Twitter, has shed some light on some limitations for the PC version of Black Ops 2 among other things.

The field of view (FOV) is capped at 80, as PCDev stated, “And don’t ask me to raise the FOV cap. Max is 80. Thankyouverymuch.” The developer cited “technical limitation” in regards to the reason why FOV doesn’t go above 80. He also added “otherwise I would raise it [FOV] to stop all the QQing.”

In regards to the previously mentioned ‘Unlimited FPS’, PCDev explained that “you can set the FPS cap to Unlimited.” However, PCDev adds that there could be a 120 [200] FPS cap placed for ranked matches as he states, “There is a cap of 120 FPS (I think) on dedicated server matches (ranked) though.”

In terms of the size of the game and the number of discs that Black Ops 2 will be available on for PC, PCDev revealed that the retail version of Black Ops 2 will be on “2 dvds” and the game “will require ~15-16GB HD, depending on language and edition.”

Thanks, VG247 and DSOGaming.

Medal of Honor: Warfighter Zero Dark Thirty Map Pack Flythrough

Medal of Honor: Warfighter’s first map pack, Zero Dark Thirty drops this December free to those who got their hands on the limited edition, $9.99 USD or 800 MS points otherwise.

To get a bit of a taste of what’s to come, Danger Close gives us a sneak peak at the two brand new multiplayer maps included in Zero Dark Thirty, Chitral Compound and Darra Gun Market via this flythrough video.

Danger Close writes that these locales are “inspired by a decade-long manhunt in some of the world’s most dangerous places: Darra Gun Market and Chitral Compound. Darra is home to dozens of back-alley shops and self-taught machinists making guns by hand. Chitral is highly inaccessible and was thought to be one of Bin Laden’s hideouts — only those with the capabilities of total surprise will successfully penetrate the compound.”

Need for Speed: Most Wanted Review

Welcome back to Paradise City, now named Fairhaven City. You’ve got a brand new locale to play with and a diverse collection of real life cars to do the playing in. But it soon goes from Paradise to Hell because it’s a mish-mash of Burnout and Speed gameplay which doesn’t work in this city.

Backstory

After the success of Criterion Game’s reinvention of the arcade racing genre of Need for Speed with Hot Pursuit, EA decided to strap the Burnout developers directly into the driving seat as “main developer” of the series. What they have delivered this time around is a mash of their previous Burnout games, most notably Burnout Paradise, and a new generation of Need for Speed gameplay. Gone are the days of high customisation and modding out your hatchbacks with neon lights, giant speakers and powerful engines that could match a modern-day Porsche.

A new generation and current modern times means a complete overhaul in Need for Speed’s most loved features back in the Underground games. Its changes will frustrate many fans, but will inevitably attract new gamers and perhaps could put Need for Speed back on the racing track.

Single Player, Autolog Connected

You’ll be wondering why single player is being touched by a multiplayer-focused website. It’s not just a standard single player you’ll find on other games. Normally single player campaigns are a unconnected, solo arrangement. Of those games which do stat-compare don’t do it as thorough as this game. In Most Wanted, Criterion Game’s Autolog connects every player action with your friends and vice-versa. Times in races, passing speed cameras, smashing billboards and how many collectibles and cars you have are all compared, in real-time, with your friends to keep the action rolling.

Whenever you’re free-driving around the city, small real-time ‘leaderboards’ – or SpeedBoards – will pop up on speed cameras and billboards to show you how fast and the distance respectively your friends have done on those collectibles. Autolog can also be accessed on the pause menu to get further stats, but it’s intuitive how the system works without any traditional leaderboards and menu systems.

Of course, you can play unconnected and with Autolog disengaged but where is the fun in that? The connected solo campaign isn’t a feature, it’s a necessity. Having the constant stats being thrown in your face adds extra life to a game which may be otherwise redundant a few months down the line when fresher games are released.

The solo ‘campaign’, which isn’t really story driven like previous Need for Speed games, itself is fun. The main goal is to beat all 10 Most Wanted drivers, all of whom have their own special car which you won’t find around the city. You rise to the ranks, picking off each Most Wanted driver – smashing their car to earn it – and gaining enough Speed Points, the in-game ‘experience’ level, to challenge the next in increasingly difficult rides. You’ll be taking down an Alfa Romeo at one point then matching up to a Lamborghini later on. Even the Most Wanted List has your friends listed on it, just to show you how good or bad you’re doing. Do you want to be truly the Most Wanted? Beat the AI drivers and keep ahead of your friends as well.

Cops make an exhilarating return. They aren’t playable, like in Hot Pursuit, but they do make an interesting and action-packed addition to the high speed game. Some events will have you being relentlessly chased down by the cops, and even after finishing that event the police will try to smash you off the road until you are either Busted or you manage to escape. The Heat levels are probably the only thing which matches the original Need for Speed game that this entry is taking for name-sake; Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005). There are a total of 6 Heat levels, each with stronger and faster cops entering the pursuit to take you down. The longer you keep the chase up, or the more damage you do to civil property, the more Heat you will attain. After escaping the hot fuzz, you will enter Cooldown – the bigger the heat level at that point, the longer it will take before you have successfully evaded them.

You won’t, or should not, have issues beating them or the Most Wanted though. You aren’t given a piece of metal with wheels on at the beginning like many previous driving games. It’s a complete reinvention from the cliché “from rags to riches” story. You actually start off from the beginning with a very solid piece of work, an Aston Martin V12 Vantage. You quickly swap over a Porsche 911 Carrera S and from there it’s up to you. Why? Because there are no junkyards, car showrooms or “winning” cars. You go find the other 40-odd cars which are dotted around Fairhaven City ready to be ‘jacked’. Some are in obvious spots, but some are off-the-beaten-track.

You found that special car? Just drive up to it and it’s yours. A small loading transition jumps you from your previous car to your new one. You have a set of 5 events exclusive to that vehicle and on beating those events you get to unlock mods to help your car. You can easily swap back to any found cars through the in-game EasyDrive.

Personally, I find this big overhaul from traditional to new gameplay quite a big change. Perhaps not overwhelming, but it does hit you because you’re so used to the gradual jumping from low-end cars to those high exotics. But the freedom, I found, of having all cars unlocked but having to find them so very entertaining. Thanks to being such a completionist, I had found a car I wanted to drive but got put off by the collectibles and other cars near by in case I forgot about them later on. You will really get side-tracked if you like collecting hidden objects. The whole being distracted idea may be a hindrance, but will help you later on when you start playing with friends on multiplayer.

Multiplayer Shenanigans

Back to Paradise City? A huge innovative playground? I don’t think so. While the single player manages to holds its merits tightly, multiplayer – sadly – appears to be very lacking. Gone are the freedom of single player and into the traditional grinding element the game was supposed to banish in the first place. Entering multiplayer is very easy; pop up EasyDrive and select either a Public or Friends game, a small transition screen will connect you into a lobby and it’s up to you what you want to do.

Unlocking cars, online, are based on your Speed Points from single player, which can be used on multiplayer as well. Granted, it’s a good push to keep gamers playing the game – almost taking a little copy from the modern First Person Shooters rank-up system, but also unsatisfying that you found all your progress in single player meant pretty much nothing. After finishing the single player, and moving onto to play multiplayer I found that none of the cars I had been working on had carried over and some cars I wanted to show off to my friends were obviously locked until I attain more SpeedPoints. Taking down all of the Most Wanted elitists and gaining their cars in single player doesn’t mean you’ll be able to play in them with friends online until you unlock them, again. It’s probably the worst decision they could have implemented.

The multiplayer is very much based on Burnout Paradise’s social system. The main objective is to have fun and play challenges, and it’s the same with Most Wanted. However, of what I played extensively with a couple of friends was neither fun nor very much entertaining. Challenges are built as SpeedLists: 5 challenges – varied as races, challenges, speedtests and team races – grouped together. You can build your own or pick a randomized “Criterion SpeedList” but they must be groups of five and you cannot fine-tune the events to your liking other than limiting them to a select amount of car types (SUV, Racing Car, etc).

It can be fun at times, generally just larking about taking your friends down. There was one challenge which seemed to redeem the game somewhat; getting jump distance through the arch in the middle of a park. It felt how the game should feel: fun and interesting, but everything else doesn’t. At a few points of our lobby, Autolog disconnected and we were booted out and back to our most recent single player progress, killing any fun we had.

Cops make absolutely no appearance in multiplayer, a very misjudged decision on the developers part. Sure, they’ll add some sort of Cops ‘n’ Robbers mode down the game’s timeline, but it’s baffling that online lacks it. For a game focused on being the “Most Wanted”, it’s a step-back even to Hot Pursuit.

It all seems very familiar and similar to what Criterion Games has done before, perhaps maybe even backtracking. Playing online multiplayer felt uninteresting and lacked any sort of true direction, regardless of how much you try to make feel fun. I’ve held off directly comparing Most Wanted with Criterion’s critically acclaimed Burnout Paradise this long, and I would honestly say that Burnout Paradise feels far more open and suited the racing, stunt-driving and having fun with friends. Fairhaven City has a mash of Need for Speed tight racing mixed in with Burnout stunts and open-driving and all of it could work, but it just doesn’t. There’s too much focus on Criterion making this a Burnout Paradise clone or sequel than to stay focused on Need for Speed being a racing game or to make what they implemented work – the open areas aren’t action packed and the tight driving doesn’t quite give you that exciting feeling compared to rival racing games.

Even the city is trying to be like Burnout Paradise too much. The famous locations of the airfield, quarry and central park from Paradise City make appearances in Fairhaven City. While they do seem to work, they serve no meaning because of the inability to actually do fun stunts and challenges. The airfield had a number of online challenges which don’t really make sense, and the locale serving as just a backdrop than a physical playground.

The Cars and Customization

You’ll find a healthy and varying collection of cars in this game, all of which have their own handling and differences that each car feels unique to the next. From the exotic super cars like the Audi R8 GT Spyder and Nissan GT-R to the hyper cars of the Koenigsegg Agera R and Lamborghini Aventador. Some unique cars thrown in the mix like the Ariel Atom, BAC Mono and a Range Rover Evoque. Yes, that’s not a typo – there is a Range Rover in this game. Oh, and a Ford F-150 Raptor.

All cars are available from the get-go, except for the 10 exclusive to the Most Wanted List but are easy to achieve. On the multiplayer side of things, all cars are based on the amount of Speed Points you have – perhaps counter-productive because of taking down every single Most Wanted racer but not being able to show for it online multiplayer.

Customization. It’s not as diverse and significant as you may think. With the lack of any sort of ‘Home’ area like a junkyard or somewhere you can manually change your cars means you can’t even change the cars colour to your liking; in multiplayer, they are unlocked after doing a certain challenge. The only way to re-spray your car is driving through one of the Repair Shops dotted around the city. But that means you could be going through them for quite a while until you find a colour you like. That also means never going through one again, which sometimes isn’t possible: the only way to re-inflate your wheels after being shredded by the cop’s spike strips, without the suitable mod, is through one. And some checkpoints do put you in the path of these drive-through stations.

You have a limited amount of mods, all of which have their own ‘pro’ benefits. But that’s about it. You will probably end up with every vehicle you like having the same mod layout because they all seem to offer the exact same across all vehicles, regardless if they are exotics or average cars.

The finite amount of user-inputting decisions is probably the biggest downfall of this game. Even Burnout Paradise had a better degree of car customization, and while Criterion Games emphasised on limited loading screens and everything being available from the start, I think they overly-emphasised on those things and didn’t bother on even the basics of customization.

Most & Least Wanted List

I love/you’ll love:

  • how beautiful Fairhaven City and the cars look
  • the amazing sounds of the cars and background SFX
  • the exhilarating feeling you get from being chased by the cops
  • the social element of online multiplayer
  • the constant Autolog connection and comparing with your friends

I dislike/you’ll dislike:

  • the lacking customization elements, even basic ones
  • crashing feels uneventful, damage models look unexciting and dull
  • the city doesn’t work with tight racing and stunt-driving
  • online feels lacklustre, limited and uninteresting

Conclusion

If you love driving games, or loved Burnout Paradise and Hot Pursuit, then this game is definitely worth a pick-up. If you like being constantly compared to other players and having fun with friends online, then this game will bring you joy.

However, if you were looking for a complete Need for Speed package or something of huge innovation on the multiplayer front this year, then it’s a no-go. The game feels polished but also rushed – that two years between Hot Pursuit and this game simply isn’t enough.

Most Wanted 2012 reinvents the arcade, action driving game to a new level. The game is sure to stay gripped on the tracks while other gaming juggernauts smash and take-down all the competition. However, it quickly loses traction and crashes out of the race due to small inconveniences and the limited and lacking online multiplayer; too much focus on making it a Burnout clone but not enough on making it actually work.

I think it’s a one-way ticket back to Paradise City.

This game was reviewed on the PS3 version. Need for Speed: Most Wanted is also available on Xbox 360, PC, PS Vita and IOS/Android – and also next year on Wii U – platforms.

BF3 Server Update Aimed at Increasing Server and Matchmaking Stability, Incoming Aftermath Patch

DICE is rolling out a brand new server update on the morning of November 8 which looks at a number of fixes and tweaks “primarily aimed at increasing server and matchmaking stability.”

According to the Battlelog, this server update will begin to roll out on November 8 at 08:00 UTC. DICE Mentions that “it will take about 6 hours to complete on consoles and at least 24 hours before a large majority of PC servers have taken the new update. Using the same starting time, Battlelog will do maintenance while we redeploy our backend to support the new server update.”

Essentially, Battlefield 3 multiplayer will be unavailable between 08:00-09:00 on November 8, approximately.

Check out the Server R33 change list below:

  • (Server renters on PC only) The “rcon” server info command now reports external IP and port as well as information regarding whether the backend queue is enabled or not.
  • Fixed an occasional issue where console servers changed max player counts incorrectly.
  • We now enforce a minimum player count of 4 on both PC and consoles (PC previously had no such limitation while console servers had 2 players as the limit) to be able to exit preround on Ranked servers. You will still be able to move around freely in preround, but the match doesn’t officially start (and thus no stats are affected) until at least 4 players have joined. This goes for both PC and console servers. This will make it harder to easily use Ranked servers as boosting servers.
  • “Hardcore no map” is now a proper preset on both the server side and backend. This means console users can now filter between hardcore servers with and/or without the “no map” setting.
  • We fixed a bug where server admins could exploit the system to effectively become immortal on his/her server.
  • We introduced a number of server stability improvements which should lead to less crashes throughout. Two specific crashes that we have eliminated are:
    • A) Servers running 9 or more maps that would crash when loading the 9th map
    • B) Servers running high player counts in combination with very high ticket count where end game reports would stall out the server

The Battlelog also mentions a “big” incoming client patch to be released in conjunction with Battlefield 3: Aftermath. Stay tuned to MP1st for more details!

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Zombie Weapons and Equipment Revealed?

More Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 info leaks out of the latest ELITE update, this time allegedly revealing some of the weapons you’ll be able to get your hands on the the latest iteration of Treyarch’s Zombies mode.

Our friends at CI have gathered these images below of what may be some of the available weapons and equipment in Black Ops 2 Zombies. Note that this list could be incomplete or might just feature placeholder weapons. We know that the Black Ops 2 campaign takes place in both the Cold War era and the near-future era, so it wouldn’t be surprising if we could get our hands on weapons like the MP5 sub-machine gun, M16 assault rifle or the Python magnum in the Zombies mode as well.

It also doesn’t feature any new wonder-weapons, which Treyarch is sure to include in the final release. Maybe they are just keeping it a secret?

From the DW/247 forums, user absolutecobblers has gathered this list of multiplayer map loading screens and names found in the files of the recent Call of Duty: ELITE update. These should be the same images you see once the ‘Improve’ section of ELITE goes live.

Unlike previous multiplayer map leaks, this confirms that a total of 14 maps will be included in Black Ops 2, plus Nuketown 2025, which is not shown below. However, you can get good look at some in-game Nuketown 2025 footage in the latest Black Ops 2 trailer.

[Updated] Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Prestige and League Emblems Revealed

Through a recent Call of Duty: ELITE update from the folks over at Beachhead Studios, some users have have been able to extract the complete list of Black Ops 2 League Emblems and Prestige Emblems, including the mysterious Prestige Master emblem.

Black Ops 2 League Emblems
Black Ops 2 Prestige Emblems

Big thanks to absolutecobblers for these images.

Update

Black Ops 2 Zombies emblems and additional Prestige emblems have been found via the 4players.de forums.

Black Ops 2 Zombie Emblems

As mentioned below, these additional Prestige emblems (last four at the bottom-right) are unconfirmed as additional Prestige levels.

Black Ops 2 Additional Prestige Emblems

According to these images, there seems to be multiple tiers of Leagues one could possibly enter through their Black Ops 2 career. As a recap, Leagues in Black Ops 2 will pair equally skilled players into similar matchmaking categories. As one progresses and becomes more proficient, they will obviously be able to move up in tiers with better players.

So far, only ten Prestige levels have been confirmed, plus the last and final Prestige Master (in which everything is unlocked for a player in Black Ops 2). However, reports have surfaced that some users have found up to 15 emblems (thanks, CharlieINTEL) within the latest ELITE update, though a number of them appear to be older Black Ops 1 emblems. It’s yet to be confirmed what it could actually signify.

Anxious to race to Prestige Master as quickly as possible? Check out Treyarch game design director David Vonderhaar’s pro-tips!

What do you think of these sweet Prestige emblems? Better than other CoD titles?

Dust 514 in Closed Beta For The Rest of The Year, Key Giveaway

For those who were hoping for an open beta for the PS3 exclusive, Dust 514, you may have to wait till next year.

Speaking with Eurogamer, CCP games have told them that the Beta would most likely remain closed till the end of 2012.

“Things are going well,” CCP Games exec David Reid said. “We’ll be in closed beta through the end of 2012, but it won’t take much longer. With a bet this big you want to get things right.”

CCP also went on the discuss how other developers have been releasing a Beta, though, in truth, they are more like a “working launch demo.” With DUST 514, the team feels that it’s a “real” beta and that they are “doing something unprecedented” while wanting “to get everything” right.

The biggest challenge that they currently face is the first 10 minutes of the game.

“We want to make it as accessible as Call of Duty and Battlefield. It’s about getting people interested, then getting them down that rabbit hole into the EVE universe. Pretty soon they’ll be at [annual convention] Fanfest getting a tattoo,” they told Eurogamer.

And of course, there’s the issue that many players fear with free-to-play titles and that’s how players who pay may have an advantage over those who do not. They stated that they expect the vast majority to spend nothing and that “the best shooter who spends nothing should be able to beat the worst shooter who pays the most.”

Can’t wait till 2013 to join in on the open Beta? We’ve got three keys to give away to three lucky readers. Simply leave a comment, make sure you’re a member of the MP1st forums, and we’ll choose three random winners!

Elgato Game Capture HD Review

The recently released Game Capture HD by Elgato has been making quite the scene lately in the YouTube gaming community, mainly because it’s the first real competition the Hauppauge HD PVR 2 has ever had.

The real attraction though is quality.  The Game Capture HD is currently the highest-quality-by-the-numbers external capture device on the market under $200.  At 30Mbps, it’s recording quality is essentially double that of the HD PVR 2.  While visually, that might not mean a whole lot aside from slightly improved clarity and color depth, in editing it proves invaluable.  Essentially speaking, the higher the bitrate, the more video you have to work with, which means you have more latitude for color correction.  Add to that the Game Capture’s ability to record in true 1080p (30fps max) via HDMI, and you’re left with a remarkably high quality HDMI recorder.

I mistakenly mention that he does a side by side comparison with the newer HD PVR 2 when it’s actually just the original HD PVR.  However, the difference in recording quality between the two PVRs is roughly 2Mbps, which isn’t really all that great of a difference.  Being able to record via HDMI does improve the image quality quite a bit, but at such a low bitrate, the HD PVR 2’s quality is still inferior to the Game Capture HD’s in my opinion.

What makes the Game Capture HD really stand out though, for me at least, is the software behind it. Elgato really spent some time and money developing their software whereas everyone else seems to just throw together the simplest recording software they can before release.  In addition to recording, the Game Capture HD software functions as a simple editor and is eventually going to support live commentary (recording your voice and gameplay simultaneously) and livestreaming (via twitch.tv) straight from within the software itself, rather than having to rely on software like Xsplit to capture the preview window.  It’s obvious that Elgato knows what they’re doing when it comes to software and they’re good at making it look good and work well.

Some minor issues I have with the software/device are that you can’t turn off the Flashback Recording, which hogs CPU cycles and storage, bogging down other programs trying to access the drive being used for storage and impact system performance overall.  To the best of my knowledge and experience, the software needs to be opened and the capture card needs to be plugged into the computer running the software for it to display the pass-through signal.  Once the pass-through starts working you can close the software, but it’s still an annoyance.  Power via USB is also required for it to function, even just as a pass-through device.  Lastly, the way the card/software handles audio is somewhat finicky.  All games are mastered a little differently, some are louder than others, some are quieter than others.  The Game Capture software has no auto-adjust feature that senses your audio is too low or too high and changes the gain accordingly.  My experience with the original HD PVR was that it seemed to normalize all the audio running through it (think sound check in iTunes or on your iPod) so that it was always the right volume.  Hopefully, Elgato addresses these issues in future updates.

In summary, the Game Capture HD is easily the highest quality, sub-$200 HDMI recorder on the market today.  With a robust package of simple yet functional software behind it, the Game Capture HD stands out as the new standard of gameplay capture quality.  Despite some minor software and hardware annoyances, it is the device to beat this year for gameplay capture.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 – How to Win the Race to Prestige Master

Treyarch game design director gives you some pro-tips to win the race to Prestige Master in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 beginning this November 13.

According to his Twitter, Vonderhaar loves “how the community are making plans for the race to Prestige,” something that’s been a bit of a tradition since the original Modern Warfare introduced the idea of “Prestige” back in 2007.

Straight from David Vonderhaar, “Here are 5 pro-tips” to help you win the race to Prestige Master.

5. Pre-order. You get Nuketown 2025 and that will have DoubleXP for a few days.

4. Prestige the weapons you are having success with. Each time you rank up a weapon, you get a small level XP bonus.

3. Complete challenges and challenge sets. They pay lots of bonus XP.

2. You need to complete Prestige 10 to become Prestige Master. Only a Prestige Master won the race.

1. Don’t post or stream before the game is officially released on Nov 13. The race starts then and not a minute earlier.

Speaking of live streams, Machinima will be live streaming Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 multiplayer all day long starting Monday, November 12 at 2:00 PM PST, a day before Black Ops 2’s release. You’ll be able to catch it here.

Are you going to be entering the unofficial race for Prestige in Black Ops 2? If so, what’s your game plan?

Battlefield 3: Aftermath – Epicenter Flythrough

DICE Level Artist Pontus Ryman flies Battlefield 3 fans through one of the four brand new maps included in the upcoming expansion, Aftermath.

Set in an earthquake-struck Tehran, Epicenter features some very distinct features that are sure to provide a very different Battlefield experience this December. Ryman writes in the latest Inside DICE blog, “To push the [earthquake] theme even more, I wanted something unique in the level that really was specific not only in comparison to the other maps in the expansion pack, but to all other multiplayer maps in Battlefield 3.”

In this case, he’s referring to the continuous tremors that occur randomly throughout a match in Aftermath. He adds, “The effects are more than just window dressing. It creates a new element of suspense, as no one knows when the tremors will hit. And when they do, players will need to be able to judge whether to try and steady their aim and go for a shaky shot, or whether to hold their trigger finger until the tremor has passed – at the risk of letting the enemy out of their sight.”

Obviously, the landscape in Epicenter has seen better days. However, the shifting of the earth creates some unique exploration opportunities. “A broken pipe in the ground becomes something you can crawl through; a rift in the street becomes a protective trench; and a pile of rubble becomes a makeshift staircase that takes you to the next level inside a building,” explains Ryman.

Also, expect “there to be plenty of additional paths for players to find. There are a number of places where players can destroy specific doors to open alternate routes. These routes can be very handy when trying to flank enemies or if they want to avoid confrontation.”

Much attention was also paid to building and other structures – making sure they looked as if they were toppled by an earthquake, not torn apart by war, as in previous Battlefield 3 maps. Ryman talks about designing buildings in Aftermath: “we designed them in a collapsed and tipped over state to show that something actually damaged their foundations (rather than them having been hit by a bomb, for example). This gives way to interesting areas where the rubble pile from a half collapsed building creates a new path for infantry to gain the higher ground.”

Lastly, Ryman recalls the inspiration for Epicenter: “The idea behind Epicenter was to do a severely shattered high-rise district from central Tehran, with the sensation of trying to survive in the aftermath of the earthquake. The map name also stemmed from the idea that this map features one of the areas hit the hardest by the earthquake in the single player campaign.”

Grand Theft Auto 5 Pre-Orders Begin Early, Second Trailer Delayed

It seems that a few retailers have begun allowing pre-orderes for Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 5, recently announced to hit shelves Spring 2013 on the Xbox 360 and PS3.

A Statigram user claiming claiming to be one of the first to have pre-ordered GTAV has some swag to prove it, including a view-finder and a poster.

I was the first person to pre-order Grand Theft Auto V. So I got this poster and little image projector thing with a sneak peak photo in it.

Other’s posting on the NeoGAF forums have received similar items for pre-ordering early, including these different view-finders and posters:

In other GTAV news, one NeoGAF user posted this letter issued to Future Shop employees, revealing that a second trailer should have aired by now.

However, according to Rockstar’s official website, it appears that it’s been delayed due to Hurricane Sandy.

No ETA as of yet, but we hope to catch the latest trailer perhaps the day pre-orders officially go on sale, November 5th.

Have you tried pre-ordering Grand Theft Auto 5 yet? If not, are you going to be lining up November 5th?
