Multiplayer Games You Might Have Missed, Week 2 – Slender

This is a weekly article I do about multiplayer games quietly making a splash. In case you missed it, check out last week’s game, Blacklight: Retribution.

[youtube id=”WOXCdSMaNeE” width=”600″ height=”350″]

While you might be wondering what would compel me to classify Slender as a multiplayer, I can assure you, it is.

For those of you unfamiliar with Slender, it’s basically the Blair Witch Project simplified and made into a PC (and Mac) game.  Armed with only a flashlight, which dies if you leave it on for too long, your goal is to collect 8 pages scattered throughout a wooded area referencing the mysterious Slender Man.  Needless to say, Slender Man isn’t a happy camper.  Getting caught by him results in the game ending.  Collect all 8 pages and you pass out, which is another way of saying “win.”

But considering Slender as no online or MP functionality built into it, why am I talking about it?  Well, when was the last time you went to see a scary movie by yourself?  Part of what makes horror movies so popular is that people rarely go alone.  Horror is best enjoyed together, and the same is true for Slender.  While there might be no blood or gore, Slender will scare the crap out of you at least once per sitting.  Throw in some friends watching you play and you’ve got the ultimate party game.  Just don’t forget to leave the nightlight on.

While this might take a leap of faith to believe, gaming with friends that are actually in the same room as you is one of the great lost pastimes of gaming.  It used to be that gaming was something friends did together (IRL) on the weekends or after school.  I know getting your friends over to play a few video games might seem like a daunting task, but in Slender’s case, it’s well worth the effort.

Slender is available for free here.

Help support independant gaming by downloading it and giving it a try.  Best of luck!

Played Slender?  Leave your thoughts in the comments!  Also, feel free to suggest games for  future “You Might Have Missed” articles in the comments as well.

Thank you for reading.

Paradox Interactive and Fatshark have initiated the beta phase of their upcoming, medieval, multiplayer-heavy, 3rd person action game War of the Roses and are already seeing a hefty number of applications.

In a recent press release, PI announced, “thus far, over 100,000 gamers have added their names to the beta roster, and today, Paradox Interactive will begin to let those players onto the battlefield as the first wave of beta keys are issued.”

Senior Producer Gordon Van Dyke comments on the surprising numbers:

The level of enthusiasm that people have had to start playing has been incredible, and we can’t wait to hear what they think once they’re actually in the game. Our goal right now is to make sure every last person who signed up gets into the beta, but forging 100,000 swords takes a while. We’ll be letting folks in, following the priority order we’ve set, and I’ll see every last one of you on the battlefield!

Modern Warfare 3 on PlayStation 3 Gets Title Update 18 (Patch 1.18), Incoming Double Weapon XP

Update: ELITE content, including Terminal, has now been added to the PSN store.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 players on the PS3 were treated to a little 31MB update today and we have the patch notes.

Similar to last week’s Xbox 360 update, this patch includes the following:

As seen on the official Modern Warfare 3 forums.

Title update 18

  • Matchmaking improvements to use first party country if DML data isn’t available
  • Fix for hacked custom classes online
  • Improved Face Off mode spawn logic
  • Support for Elite drops 16-18
  • Oasis fix to rock glitch

This update is also mainly to support the August ELITE Content Drops – two multiplayer maps Decommission and Off Shore – and Vertigo, the Spec Ops mission, along with the Modern Warfare 2 map, Terminal, which Xbox 360 players got last month. ELITE subscribers will be getting their DLC and map Terminal tomorrow, where non-ELITE players will get Terminal on Friday for free.

A Double Weapon XP event has been scheduled for the start of this weekend, Candice Capen confirms. She says that “Double weapon XP starts this Friday 8/17” and will be “going longer than the weekend.” Double Weapon XP will be live on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

She also reassures that the PC community will be getting the newly buffed weapons, which consoles got at the beginning of the month, in a patch on Friday. This will also include the MW2 map, Terminal.

PS3 guys, are you excited to finally play the Modern Warfare 2 favourite, Terminal? Also, what guns will you be levelling up to gold in the 2x weapon XP? Share your thoughts and opinions below!

Crysis 3 Multiplayer Will Have an Easier Entry Level, Crash Site Returns and Challenges Introduced

Shortly after revealing Crysis 3’s brand new Hunter multiplayer mode during Crytek’s EA presentation at this year’s Gamescom, Cevat Yerli, CEO and President of Crytek, sat down with EA Origin to discuss the third numbered entry into the Crysis series, including additional multiplayer details.

In case you missed it, Crytek recently gave us our first look at Crysis 3’s multiplayer with the new Hunter game mode, a mode that pits 2 nano-suit wearing hunters against a squad of CELL soldiers. As each CELL soldier is taken out, that player is then converted to another hunter, making for an increasingly tense situation for surviving players. As a hunter, the task is simply to convert each CELL soldier into  hunters before the timer runs out.

You can check out the visually stunning Hunter mode multiplayer trailer right here.

Crysis 3’s Hunter Multiplayer Mode

When asked if a more traditional multiplayer experience would be returning to Crysis 3 during a live Q&A session with EA Origin, Yerli confirmed the return of more classic modes like Crash Site, as well as some new features that will be making their way to the multiplayer.

“We have Crash Site, which returns from after Crysis 2. It was a very popular mode in Crysis 2,” Yerli tells EA Origin. “So Crash Site is back – improved and refined. It’s better than ever before. We have, of course, also, Hunter Mode as we mentioned before. It’s our main innovative mode. But, we have some others that we will disclose over time.”

Yerli then reflected on on Crysis 2’s multiplayer and some of the issues that it faced: “Multiplayer in Crysis 2 has been very important to us, but, obviously, it didn’t break through as the heart of the game yet.” Learning from past experiences, he explains that, in Crysis 3, “we made it simpler. The entry barrier to Crysis 2 multiplayer was quite complicated, to be honest, and you needed hours to really get to fun. After some hours people really enjoyed it, but its in these first hours that we lost people at the same time. So we made those hours now shorter and more fun and I think its going to be more social, more engaged, more quicker to the core experience. When I say social, I don’t mean just to throw out buzz words, I mean, with your friends, it will be more fun to play.” Fun factor is always a good thing to have in multiplayer, so let’s hope that Crysis 3 can deliver next year.

When it comes to new features, Yerli reveals, “we have built this new feed technology which allows you to pose challenges, developer oriented challenges, challenges that are coming from your friends or in a live lobby session. The best of the lobby players will pose a challenge to you. At the same time, developers can pick up random challenges. So all this is a major effort of making Crysis 3 multiplayer really stick and be much more easier to entry and long to master kind of experience.” Not a whole lot was made clear regarding what exactly this new “challenges” feature really entails, but we can hope to hear more in the lead up to Crysis 3’s release.

Does it sound like Crytek is on track with multiplayer this time around? What are your thoughts?

DayZ – PS3 and Xbox 360 Version Depends On PC Success, Creator Meeting With Console Developers

Well, it seems that all you guys who have been asking for the popular Arma 2 DayZ Mod to come over to console may indeed get your wish.

Speaking with Joystiq, Dean Hall, the creator of DayZ has come out to say that he would like to see the Mod make it to console one day. He stated that this would all depend on how well the standalone PC version does, however.

“You’re not going to put it on the consoles if you’re only going to sell 100,000 units or something like that,” he told Joystiq. “DayZ will be driven by its PC development and it will innovative on that. And, once we’re at a point, we’ll take it and do a Mac version, 360 and PS3.”

This is understandable for if a game does poorly on PC, they are taking a huge risk releasing it on console. Dean didn’t reveal anything about who would be developing it for console, but he did say that they are meeting at Gamescom and discussing the possibility of it coming to consoles. Be aware though, that even if the PC version does sell tremendously, that is still not a confirmation that the game will hit consoles.

Would you play DayZ on consoles?

For those who were planning on picking up the Playstation3/Vita exclusive crossover brawler title this October, you may have to wait a bit longer as today, SuperBot Entertainment announced that the title will be releasing in November.

The new release date is set to November 20th. Need For Speed: Most Wanted Multiplayer Preview and Details – Autolog 2.0, CloudCompete and More

A full blow-out of Most Wanted multiplayer details has been released during EA’s conference at Gamescom. Criterion Games, the developers behind Hot Pursuit and the Burnout games, have detailed some exciting additions and changes for their action-packed rendition of the original Most Wanted title. Check out the latest trailer below showing off exotic cars, a beautiful city, intense action and the true experience: playing and having a laugh with friends online.

[youtube id=”aTi6uinHT30″ width=”600″ height=”350″]

All seems very familiar to those who played Burnout Paradise. From jump challenges and drifting around parking lots, to meeting up with the multiplayer lobby to race from A to B; you can tear up the city – which is called Fairhaven – by chasing each other down, trying to takedown your friends (or enemies). The emphasis on playing for fun and having a laugh is very high – and for those who did play and enjoy Burnout Paradise online multiplayer will, again, appreciate the community-driven direction and online style Criterion Games is offering in their new NFS game.

From a Lamborghini Countach to a Pagani Zonda, this Need For Speed game is offering the most exotic variety of sleek and smooth-looking vehicles. Be sure to check out my previous article on other featured cars and initial details of Most Wanted.

Burnout Meets Need For Speed

Takedowns are present. Cops are on the watch. Thrilling online multiplayer expanded. Sweet looking cars with their engines running. It’s a mash of Burnout meets Need For Speed – perhaps the spiritual successor to Burnout Paradise? Online multiplayer will have an extensive amount of challenges and ways to compete with your friends and foes. Speed Points are the in-game currency and experience level; the more Speed Points you have, the more kitted out vehicle you will have.

But that’s not all. You don’t have to race all the time – the city is open world, so how about a little Sunday drive across Fairhaven crashing through collectible gates and billboards, which if you went through the furthest you’re face will appear on these billboards for friends to see and inevitably plough through it, and meeting up with friends to generally just have fun after a hard day of raging on Call of Duty or Battlefield.

The Police are about though! Your fast and sleek cars will probably not go unnoticed. The mechanics of police ‘gameplay’ are still present (it is a Need For Speed game after all) – even after finishing a race, and if you were being chased during that race or they are waiting at the checkered flag, the cops will chase you down relentlessly in the open world. Hitch up with some friends and go toe-to-toe with the fuzz, or flee across the county to escape the heat.

Your Dream Car

Matt Webster, the Executive Producer for Most Wanted, represented the Criterion Games staff at EA’s conference. He announced from the start that the era (or “20 years of convention”) of grinding for your next unlocked car – having to do so many challenges to get your dream vehicle – is now a previous and outdated system that they are proud to replace. He mentioned that if you want a particular car you no longer have to spend countless hours trying to unlock it and merely just have to find the vehicle parked in a specific area.

We believe an open-world game deserves an open game structure. Right from the very start, players will have the freedom to drive pretty much any car that they want. If you can find it, you can drive it. No more grinding through hours of play to get to your favourite [car]. We’re creating a new way of playing driving games, for a new generation of players. Drive through Fairhaven, find new cars then race, chase and explore to upgrade them.

Autolog 2.0: Engaged

Having released Autolog in 2010 – the community hub for sharing photos and keeping connected with friends – in Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit, Criterion relished the connectivity of the system. They wanted to “push the boundaries” of extending and expanding Autolog for it to be fully integrated. Criterion employees have compared Autolog to be a similar system to Facebook and Twitter – because it keeps people connected and easily accessible for people to meet-up with friends.

Autolog 2.0, as Matt Webster confirms, will feature heavily in Most Wanted. The system will be there to not only help you find and track your friends’ highscores and arrange multiplayer lobbies, but to guide you into a world of interconnectivity; if you post a fast lap on a street or a speed camera snatches you going at a high speed (which is good), your friends will able to see specific information by pulling up next to the road or camera and Autolog 2.0 will provide informative details on your HUD.

Autolog continually tracks your performances, instantly comparing them to your friends and then injecting the results directly into the heart of the game. Every aspect of this game puts social competition at your fingertips.

Introducing CloudCompete

As a feature to Autolog 2.0, CloudCompete is a brand new way to play and level up across multiple platforms (including iOS/mobile devices, PS Vita, both PS3 and Xbox 360, and PC). With CloudCompete, you can play on your home platforms and then continue experiencing thrilling gameplay and adding more Speed Points on your mobile devices on the move. What, exactly, are the specifications of CloudCompete – such as how much you can do on the move and how exactly this technology will work – is still ambiguous, but the implementation of CloudCompete and Autolog 2.0 will make Most Wanted the “most socially connected game of this generation.”

Compete against your friends and rack up Speed Points on the console, and then add to those Speed Points when you play on iOS, Android or PSVita. For the first time, I can level up in multiplayer when away from the sofa, then most up the Most Wanted List when travelling.

Need For Speed: Most Wanted releases this year October 30 for US and November 1 for EU territories. Will you get into the hot seat and drive your brains out, and what cars are you looking forward to drive? Did you love Burnout Paradise and you look forward to the spiritual successor? Tell us your thoughts and opinions in the comments section!

How Black Ops 2 Might Play

Based on my ability to accurately predict how future CoD titles are going to play, I think it’s safe to say that what I’m about to say will ring true come November 13th.

Prediction:

[youtube id=”-Wuh-KolIdk” width=”600″ height=”350″]

Reality:

[youtube id=”txy3zekcltw” width=”600″ height=”350″]

Basically, I have no freaking clue how BOII is going to play, and that’s a damn good thing. CoD has gotten to the point where I can tell exactly how each new game is going to play based on little more than a list of (confirmed) perks and killstreaks.  That’s not to say I’m a fortune teller or genius (which I of course am, duh), it’s just that I have been playing CoD since WaW and I have nearly 100 days played in total online across all the CoDs I’ve played collectively.  But BOII has thrown me for a serious spin given the depth of the changes they’re putting into place, which sounds a little like everyone’s favorite buzz word, “innovation.”

Bottom line is, I have played the crap out of CoD, I’m good at it, and I’m a genius.  That said, I can really only give you a rough idea of how BOII is going to play once it’s in the public’s hands.  The footage from Gamescon, while appreciated, is really just people playing it slowly and poorly to drag out their videos and get the most info possible, and shouldn’t really serve as an indicator of real-world play.

The reforming of killstreaks into Score Streaks is going to see killstreak spam on par with MW3.  There will most likely be UAVs constantly in the air, along with things trying to kill you.  Thankfully, it seems like Treyarch has done an admirable job of making playing a bitch with nothing but stealth perks and weapons basically impossible if you want to stay alive for long periods of time.  That said, Ghost only working when you’re on the move isn’t “revolutionary,” it’s just a clever way of making it slightly less powerful.  Even if Ghost was unchanged, I expect the Orbital VSAT to be buzzing above almost non-stop for competent players, so it’s not like it matters anyway.  And just for the sake of clarity, Ghost wasn’t the only thing that made BO1 play as slowly as some felt it did.  Guns with plenty-o-recoil, higher player-health, and killstreaks not stacking were by far some of the biggest factors in the way BO1 played.  Ghost just made everything a little worse.

That said, I expect to see a lot less camping in BOII.  I also expect everyone to be totally at a loss for how they should set up their classes until Tmartn figures out the best class setup (and Rawinstinct subsequently plagiarizes it and puts it on his channel too).  After the “best class(es)” get figured out, I think you’ll start to see less people running around with 6 perks and a Tactical Insertion and more people running whatever gun has the least amount of recoil and a set of perks that suits the level of skill the player has.  At the end of the day, the people with little-to-no skill or CoD experince are going to run the stealth perks, they’re going to camp, and I have a feeling they’re going to be dying and losing games a lot more in BOII than in previous CoDs.

That said, what the hell do I know?  I’m just a genius with enough hours played on BO1 to have a non-commercial pilot’s license.

Halo 4 Multiplayer Specializations Revealed

Halo 4 Spartan Ops designer David Ellis unveils a whole new level of depth to Halo 4’s multiplayer.

“When we launch Halo 4 in November, that’s just the beginning,” he recently told IGN. What on Earth could he be talking about, you ask? Something that 343 Industries has kept secret to this very day.

This November 6th, Halo 4 will introduce a brand new concept to the multiplayer of the series called Specializations – 8 different mini-classes that include their own unique set of abilities. However, these abilities will not be so easily acquired. According to Ellis, “Specializations are just another opportunity to make the play experience months and even years after release feel fresh.”

Upon choosing a Specialization, you’ll be granted the chance to earn an extra 10 levels’ worth of unlocks. This essentially involves earning 9 different levels of armor customization (purely cosmetic), including armor skins, weapon skins, emblems and a visor color. Now, the good stuff happens at level 10 where you earn a special perk, or “mod” that will actually affect gameplay in certain ways. Also, these mods and customizations can be carried over into the Spartan Ops.

Ellis goes on to detail these 8 different perks and specializations that you can start thinking about striving towards – two of which will be available from the get-go. All eight will be available on day-one for those who purchase the Halo 4 Limited Edition.

Wetworks (available day-one)

“When someone’s using Promethean vision, they show up on screen as a big red figure,” Ellis explains. “With [the Wetwork mod], you still show up, but the only thing that shows up is your outline.” Additionally, “…when you sprint, it adds some sound dampening so you don’t make as much noise when you sprint.” However, fear not. Ellis made it clear that “you definitely still show up on radar…”

Pioneer (available day-one)

Quite simply, as a Pioneer, you gain more XP with the Fast Track mod. This should hopefully help ease the grind to those final levels. Ellis stresses, however that this ability will not be so easily exploited. “You can change loadouts mid-match, but we put fail-safes in. For Fast Track, you only get extra XP for the amount of time you were using it. You can’t just turn it on right at the end of a match and think you’re going to get extra XP for everything you did in a match.”

Engineer

As an Engineer, you’ll have the ability to anticipate when and where ordinance drops on the battlefield with the Drop Recon mod. “A couple extra seconds before everyone else sees the [drop] coming down, the Engineer is gonna get a heads-up,” Ellis explains. “Based on the distance to the weapon, you can get an arrow pointing you to where the nearest timed ordinance drop is coming in. It extends the range of those popping up on your HUD.”

Tracker

Trackers, while unable to anticipate a drop, do get a second chance to re-roll any ordinance that they receive, allowing for a second chance at earning the good stuff. “When you get an ordinance drop, you get a choice of some grenades, a weapon, and a power-up,” Ellis explains. “What this allows you to do is essentially re-roll. So if the three choices that you have don’t suit your play style, you get a chance to re-roll and get an all-new selection.”

Rogue

With their Stability mod, Rogues are masters of weapon control. Ellis recalls, “in past Halo games, when you’d be zoomed in and take a shot, you’d be taken out [of your zoom].Now it’s not necessarily the case. As you’re taking shots [with the Stability mod], it allows you to keep your reticule more stable.” Additionally, this mod also increases hip-fire accuracy.

Stalker

Stalkers are granted the Nemesis mod which basically “pops up on the HUD an icon of the last person that killed you.” Simple and effective!

Pathfinder

“If you like grabbing turrets, this will make you a little more powerful than you would be otherwise,” explains Ellis. The Pathfinder’s Gunner mod reduces cool-down on vehicle weapon overheating and give you that extra bit of speed when wielding a detached emplacement.

Operator

With the Operator’s Wheelman mod, you’ll be more resistant to EMP pulses that freeze your vehicle and will also be granted faster vehicle health regen. Ellis details, “in the past you’ve been able to use an EMP pulse to freeze a vehicle. This [mod] gives you a bit of a resistance against that. It won’t necessarily stop you in your tracks [anymore]. This also allows you to recharge the health of a vehicle a little faster. It won’t be fast, but if you can get out of harm’s way, you’re going to recharge the vehicle’s health faster than you would otherwise.” He adds that “you’re going to be rewarded a lot more for [driving well and getting assists] than you were before. We’re going to encourage people to want to be the driver.”

Though all these new Spartan IV armor customizations sound pretty sweet, there are those who will always prefer the more classic look. When asked if the MJOLNIR Mark V look from Halo 1 would ever return, Ellis teased, “I will say that if you’re a fan of nostalgia, we’ve definitely included some options that will scratch that particular itch.” But that’s not all. He concludes, stating, “we definitely have some secret [armors] up our sleeves.”

That about wraps up what you can come to expect from this unexpected new multiplayer addition to the Halo series. What are your thoughts on it so far? Which Specialization sounds right for you? Let us know in the comments below!

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Beta Now Open To Those Who’ve Pre-Purchased on Steam, New Update

A new update is available for the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive beta as it opens up today for those who’ve pre-orded via Steam.

As mentioned last week, the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive beta can now be accessed by those who’ve pre-ordered the game on Steam. For those still waiting, you’ve not much longer as the official release date is just around the corner: August 21.

In addition to last week’s update, the team has done some more patching up which you can read in detail about below.

Gameplay

  • Addressed recently reported performance issues.
  • Living players can now hear the dead spectators in Casual game mode.

Effects

  • Improved muzzle flash dynamic light performace and optimized bullet hit impacts effects

UI

  • Added options to select the position of the steam toast notification.
  • Fixed an issue with the Scoreboard where it was not showing a Tie or Loss properly.
  • Fixed an issue where players were not getting updated in the Mini-Scoreboard.
  • The Money HUD element now flashes more when it increases.
  • The Scoreboard now allows you to view a player’s profile.
  • Updated the Alerts and Win panel spacing to match each other better.
  • Updated the Win panel to be overall smaller and streamlined in all the states for modes.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue in the HUD player count where players who left or changed state quickly were not getting updated in the scoreboard as such.
  • Updated the Play With Friends screen to enable the private/public toggle.
  • Boot invites should now be accepted after the game loads from an invite click in steam message.
  • Fixed description text for the Achievement: “Awardist”.
  • Fixed server crash caused by taking environment (falling) damage while defusing.
  • Fix for firing delay after weapon switching during a reload.
  • Fix for cash awards not be applied properly for grenade kills.

Matchmaking

  • By default the input device is locked to keyboard and mouse.

Community Support

  • Fixed a bug where custom server map lists wouldn’t populate if CT models weren’t specified. Server now sends information about slots, models, arms and maplist before serverinfo so that correct models could be loaded.
  • When hashing the community server response we take into account game mode/type/numslots so that we rebuild extended kv when mode changes, but the map remains the same.
  • Added commandline argument “-maxplayers_override” that, if exists, trumps any “maxplayers” values read from gamemodes files.
  • Added -gamemodes_serverfile command line parameter that allows specifying a file other than the default gamemodes_server.txt
  • Network stringtables will not be using dictionaries on community servers even if convar is enabled. This allows clients to actually download map since resources are referenced by strings and the client will not have the dictionary until they have the map.
  • Client will defer .bsp file preload until after required resources are available. For the case of a missing map, this allows the client to reach signon state “new” and kick off downloader thread while retaining their spot on the server. This allows community servers to essentially run 3rd party maps that clients will download when played.
