Black Ops 2 Multiplayer – Confirmed Perks, Scorestreaks, Weapons, Attachments and Much More

Straight out of this year’s Gamescom, we get an in-depth look into the multiplayer of Treyarch’s upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

We’ve got it all – weapons, attachments, perks, equipment, wildcards and scorestreaks. As hinted in the recently released multiplayer trailer, Black Ops 2 will be adopting a slot-based create-a-class system that will allow players to mix and match their weapons and abilities within the 10 slots given to them.

Also noteworthy is that Killstreaks are now called “Scorestreaks” and are achievable by scoring certain amounts of points. Of course, this most likely includes capturing objectives or completing certain goals on top of simply killing the enemy.

Keep in mind that, though this list is thorough, it is based off the first public build of the Black Ops 2 and, therefore, could still be tweaked before release this November 13th.

Borderlands 2 – Mechromancer’s “Best Friends Forever” Skill Tree Revealed And More

Gearbox Software reveals more information on the fifth class to be featured in it’s upcoming RPGFPS Borderlands 2, The Mechromancer.

One of the most unique features that’s to be included in this class that’s slated to release 60 days after Borderlands 2’s initial release date of September 18th is the “Best Friend Forever” skill tree.

The Best Friend Forever skill tree, essentially features an ability that makes it easier for less skilled players to play the game and be more of a valuable asset to their fellow partners on the planet of Pandora. It has been dubbed by numerous Borderlands fans, and even by Borderlands 2 lead designer John Hemmingway, as the “girlfriend mode”. Hemmingway explains in a recent interview with Eurogamer:

The design team was looking at the concept art and thought, you know what, this is actually the cutest character we’ve ever had. I want to make, for the lack of a better term, the girlfriend skill tree. This is, I love Borderlands and I want to share it with someone, but they suck at first-person shooters. Can we make a skill tree that actually allows them to understand the game and to play the game? That’s what our attempt with the Best Friends Forever skill tree is.

This is possible thanks to the ‘Close Enough’ skill – one of the first skills that’s available from the Best Friend Forever skill tree which enables the person playing as the Mechromancer to have their bullets magically hit their target if they so happen to miss them by having those bullets ricochet off of  objects and back into the enemy.

You may have read many-a-headlines today regarding Hemmingway’s “girlfriend” remarks. We’ll leave that up for discussion below.

To counteract any negative feedback from more “hardcore” gamers that the Best Friend Forever skill tree might bring, Hemmingway goes on to say that they might make the Mechromancer’s other skill tree consist of a ‘Hardcore mode’ that will enable any one who uses the skill tree get a completely different experience in-game.

When asked about The Mechromancer’s robotic arm, Hemmingway says,

“She’s got this robot arm. It immediately asks a few questions. Why does she have a robot arm? Where did she get it? Does it have special powers? We all love little things that get your mind immediately running. That’s what’s really exciting about the Mechromancer. Even for me, as the guy who’s going to build all the skill trees, I’m like, okay, robot hand, what does that do? Hmm. So you’ll definitely see a few things with the robot hand in her skill trees.”

With the addition of having skills involving her robotic arm, the Mechromancer also has the ability to call in her robotic friend, Deathtrap, who can be summoned into the fray of battle to take care of Pandora’s many enemies and as well as protect the Mechromancer from harms way.

In case you missed the recent Borderlands 2 trailer ‘Come And Get Me’, feel free to view it here.

Borderlands 2 is slated to be released on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms next month. Don’t forget to pre-order Borderlands 2 as well, since doing so nets you a free upgrade to it’s Premium Club, which gives you access to the Mechromancer class free of charge and other goodies.

Gaming and Violence – My Answer to a Question as Old as Pong

Hit the rewind button on the history of gaming and you quickly find yourself in a very strange place.  Chances are you’ll find yourself in a dark room with a couple of empty microwave pizza boxes and a half-empty long-gone-flat bottle of 2 liter soda.  You’ll hear the sounds of 8 bit pre-smartphone ringtones coming out of a TV with one speaker and a coaxial input.  Also most likely, the only other person in the room will be a teenager that is blinded by table lamps and deeply entrenched in a 1V1 with Shao Kahn.

Maybe Mortal Kombat II is a little before your time, but back in my day, it was literally the best thing going in gaming.  A lot’s changed since then.  It used to be that gaming was something people did alone, then the PS2 happened.  In retrospect, maybe the PS2 didn’t have the greatest graphics of all time, but back when it came out, you couldn’t get any better on console.  But that wasn’t the only thing that made the PS2 the massive success that it was.  Way ahead of it’s time, the PS2 was the first console to have a commercially successful online multiplayer.

The PS2 made gaming what it is today, a social experience that gets gamers out of their parents’ basement and into the inexplicably vast and ever-changing world of the internet.  With that kind of exposure, the landscape of gaming has changed dramatically.  Now, if your game isn’t an online title, you are basically dead in the water.  But there’s also this notion that because the people we’re shooting in FPS games online are, you know, other “real” people, gaming has suddenly gotten more, well, “real.”  In just about every major shooting since Columbine, whether or not the suspect/perpetrator of the terrible and gruesome massacre has had an association to video games has been closely scrutinized.

The controversy is bound to pop up in the latest (and worst yet in America) shooting in Aurora, CO.  Much to my dismay, it has been labeled the “Batman Shooting.”  Out of respect for the victims of the shooting, the city of Aurora, and the cast and crew of TDKR, I refuse to call what happened the “Batman Shooting.”  Anyway, once people find a reason to justify that James Eagan Holmes did what he did because he played a “violent” video game, you’ll no doubt see the media flooded with anti-“violent” video game protests.  I say “violent” because to me, violence in fantasy is the same as any other fantasy.

Do sad movies make people feel depressed?  Do comedies cheer people up?  Do FPS games make people more likely to shoot someone?  The answer, in many ways, is yes to all three.  Taking part of a fantasy, regardless of what that fantasy is, will always make people more likely to act out that fantasy in real life.  The difference, and why I don’t think “violent” video games shouldn’t be banned, is really damn simple.  Just because someone tells a funny joke doesn’t mean I’m going to drop my regular 9-5 and pursue a comedy career.  Just because I’m really good at shooting 12 year old kids online in COD or BF3 doesn’t mean I’m going to go shoot up a school.

The reason James Eagan Holmes did what he did (assuming some things here of course) isn’t because he played COD (if he even did of course), it’s because he’s one fucked up asshole that wanted to hurt people for some really fucked up and stupid reason.  Holmes isn’t right in the head.  Yeah, maybe playing COD (if he did), made him more likely to do what he did, but it didn’t put thousands of dollars in loans in his bank account, it didn’t make him buy an assault rifle, pistols, and a shotgun, it didn’t make him dress up in body armor then brutally murder 12 people and inure 58 others.  James Eagen Holmes did what he did because he’s James Eagen Holmes, not because a game that millions of non-violent, normal, and healthy-of-mind people play every year, made him.

COD doesn’t tell you to do anything other than play.  If people aren’t mature enough to differentiate FPS games from real life or shooting virtual enemies from killing real people, chances are the game has a lot less (as in basically nothing) to do with their actions than their lack of differentiation does.  A case could be made for how exposure to something makes you less emotional/mentally adverse to it, but the bottom line is that humanity has evolved a long way since droughts meant we had to kill a member of our family to make the rains come back.  If we aren’t evolved or smart enough to coexist with “violent” media and each other, maybe the problem has less to do with the media and more to do with our intelligence.

The issue isn’t gun laws, it isn’t “violent” video games, and it isn’t movies with Arnold Swarchenegger in the lead role.  The issue is education and a failing appreciation for human life.  People don’t care less about each other because they’re shooting one-another online.  We are growing more distant from one another because when was the last time you really worked hard, I mean blood, sweat, and tears hard, to earn a living cultivating hundreds of acres of corn so you can afford to feed your family through the winter?  When was the last time your next meal wasn’t sitting in a refrigerator somewhere within walking distance?  When was the last time you had to really DO something?

The issue is that humanity is quickly becoming less human and more lazy.  Maybe indulging for hours on end in entertainment isn’t helping, but maybe it’s our fault for sitting around shooting virtual people every night.  The day when a law does something to change people’s behavior, like a high school diploma being required by law, is the day I’ll support the banning of “violent” video games.  Until then, you’ll find me sitting in my apartment, playing on XBL, eating yesterday’s pizza and drinking cans of Arizona Iced tea as I never much cared for flat soda, much to the dismay of my girlfriend (and no, she’s not virtual).

Thank you for reading.

Battlefield 4 Confirmed to be Set In Modern Day, Bad Company Series Not Dead

DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson took the stage today at GDC Europe where he shed some light details on Battlefield 4 and the Bad Company series.

For those who were hoping that Battlefield 4 would be taking place during a different time era, you’ll be disappointed to know that DICE will be sticking with the Modern Day setting.

“We still want to stay in this genre, the modern day as it is. We feel this is a place we can be and continue with the series. Battlefield 4 can live in this space and be very successful.” Karl said, “There’s a lot of things inspiring us as to how the franchise will move on. Everything from fans’ feedback, to market research and, of course, what we want to build ourselves. It’s not just one single thing.”

And speaking of the Bad Company franchise, Karl did touch upon this, however it wasn’t anything really new from what was said in mid July of this year. He explained, “that doesn’t mean there might not be a Bad Company game again in the future.”

Are you happy Battlefield 4 will be set in a modern time era once again? Were you hoping for something different?

Thanks Joystick

Counter-Strike: GO Beta Gets an Update, Beta Invites Next Week for Those Who Pre-Purchase

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive beta gets a substantial update as developers prepare to open the beta up to those who pre-purchase.

Starting August 14, those who pre-purchase CS:GO on Steam will gain access to the beta, according to an official blog post. CS:GO officially releases on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on August 21, only a few weeks away.

Below is a list of recent updates that went live yesterday, August 10.

Gameplay

  • The max penetration distance has been increased to 7.5 feet.

 Maps

  • Dust 2
    • Extended fade distance on mid-barrels to prevent double door snipers from seeing through them. Thanks, VeryGames.

 Audio

  • Crossfade from “near” gunfire to “distant” gunfire is now smooth, fixing the bug wherein distant sounds first got quieter then louder the further they were from the listener
    • Added exponential function to the “near” / “distant” crossfade operators.
    • “distant” weapon fire mix group has been increased significantly to offset the reduction in decibel levels.
  • Added “pow” function to math operator to facilitate non-linear crossfades in operator stacks.
  • Added a parameter that discounts “player sound” status when determining the distance of a sound that is currently hardcoded into the operators system (“source 1″ legacy).. “force_not_player_sound”
  • Changed all of the new sounds spatialization options to use the following denial test if(sv.IsActive() && !sv_cheats.GetBool())
    • This prevents players from changing their settings during a non-cheat enabled game but allows them to tweak them during a cheat enabled game.
  • Fixed a bug that was always playing the AK47 sounds from the same location
  • Famas – lengthened sound to smooth the 3 shot burst
  • Small edit to the ak47_shoot, rate at beginning of wave lengthened and pitch slightly lowered in this area as well.

 UI

  • Scoreboard update
    • Now accommodates 24 players.
    • Scoreboard no longer hides all other UI elements.
    • Fixed Z order for a variety of panels which now allows the chat to draw on top of the scoreboard.
    • MVP stars are now broken out in the scoreboard.
    • Added ping column.
    • Added dollar signs to the scoreboard elements that are represented in dollars.
    • Fixed other players showing your local clan tag on their target id name.
    • The server name now shows in the scoreboard.
    • Showing Elo brackets in scoreboard for casual mode.
    • Added Cost per Kill column to the scoreboard.
  • Added Community Quick-Play button to PLAY sub menu.
  • Made HUD team color adjustments to make them more uniform.
  • Created an additional function to set team colors for “additive” drawing because different HUD elements used the same color values, but rendered them differently.
  • Fixed the chat panel to more-or-less match the position of the voice/info panel.
  • Added the Community Server Browser to the Ingame menu under the title “Browse Community Servers”
  • Added a content warning message before displaying Server Browser.
  • Chat UI update:
    • Made the in-game chat window smaller.
    • Fixed the scroll bar on the ingame chat.
    • Chat input UI now makes a sound when too many characters have been typed.
    • Updated the max number of characters to be1024.
    • Allow numpad ENTER key to close the chat window.
  • Added keybindings to ‘Autobuy’ and ‘Rebuy Previou’s.
  • Shortened binding label “ESCAPE” to “ESC”.
  • Added keybinding to buy menu’s ‘CLOSE’.
  • Added the ‘Dust Mission’ to the match set up carousel.
  • The mini scoreboard now supports up to 24 players.
  • The mini scoreboard now uses the server’s num players instead of being hard coded.
  • Modified scrollable player/map list in “Call Vote” panel.
  • Made scrolling thumbs bigger.
  • Modified scrollbar buttons to be more like standard buttons.
  • Update to Choose Team screen:
    • Screen can now show up to 24 players.
    • Added names to the avatars on the team select screen.
  • Fixed the radio panel to position correctly under the money panel again, but will never overlap the health panel regardless of screen res or safezone settings.

Bug Fixes

  • Removing this convar [ CSGO – sv_allow_lobby_connect_only ]  for CSGO build, since we would like lobbies to always be associated with servers for community matchmaking.
  • Removed setting of maxplayers before every session.
  • Disabled maxplayers command, server now sets min/max/default maxplayers based on server.dll
  • The game now forces extra spectator slots to 2.
  • Kick a bot that a player is controlling now reverts the player to essentially display as alive. -However, their stats still do not change until they are alive again properly
  • Better logging info when a file fails the sv_pure check.
  • Added support for the chat to use the same rules for chat visibility as is used for voice audibility.
  • Disabled mode-based restrictions on showing Elo rank in scoreboard.
  • Fix for vote UI having incorrect maps listed if the server runs custom map groups.
  • Fixed some HUD elements not getting scaled properly.
  • Play With Friends update:
    • Hooked up Steam page button.
    • Made mouse click get correct IDs for Invite and Join states.
    • Made Join states show correctly.
    • Removed team play option.
    • Fixed the toggle for Private / Public option.
    • Fix for the Kick player function.
    • Kick now shows the correct ‘kicked’ text string.
  • Fixed an issue where tracers were coming from the wrong spot when spectating.
  • Now return correct number of max human players for server browser and master servers.

Matchmaking

  • Added a convar:mm_session_search_distance which allows us to bump session search distance to be able to find lobbies on Steam Beta (set to >=1).
  • Fixed the search to not use -1 for numSlots, to not use a filter on numSlots and to not use bypasslobby, but rather use game state filter.
  • Fixed dedicated server reporting numSlots no greater than 16 even when running PC casual with 20 slots, will still need to do client-side work to not stomp that value.
  • Fixed a bug where Korean characters could not be typed in chat.
  • Fixed several bugs with session slots:
    • When transitioning from PWF lobby to an official dedicated server we increase members limit to 20.
    • Dedicated servers now report numSlots representing max human players
  • Session created based on information from direct connect to community server will now preserve number of slots defined by the community server.
  • Fixed a memory leak for searches that produce no results from play with friends.  Message information about no results available only shows for community quick play, otherwise a new game is created without notifying user about it.
  • Fixed number of slots not getting correctly set when auto creating a new game from an official matchmaking search that didn’t return any results.
  • PWF happens only on official or listen servers.  Play with friends now finds a dedicated server for public game correctly.

Community Support

  • Added a callback into server.dll that can send client messages before engine advances sign on state to connected state. This lets server to pass data to client before client starts loading map and precaching models.
  • CSGO will send information about viewmodels and player models, max players and maplist down to clients since clients do not necessarily have info about mapgroup and map played by the server.
  • Community quick play search will no longer attempt to create a new lobby if it fails to find an existing lobby to join.

Report – Amazon Lists Battlefield 3 “Premium Edition” to Release Next Month

Seems that DICE may be preparing to unveil a brand-new edition for Battlefield 3, according to a recent retail listing.

Amazon Canada has listed a new “Premium Edition” for Battlefield 3. No additional information has been given regarding what’s included in this package, but the retailer does suggest that it is releasing September 15th of this year at a cost of $69.99 Canadian dollars. One can only assume that this package would contain Premium access on top of the game itself.

Treat this as a rumor for the moment, as nothing is yet confirmed. However, with Gamescom 2012 being just around the corner, don’t be surprised if DICE announces a new edition of Battlefield 3 such as this.

Thanks, Trendygamers, for the heads-up.
