Starhawk Patch 1.03 Now Live, Includes Free Maps and Much More

Starting today, you’ll be able to download the first of many free map packs along with a brand new patch that adds an assortment of new features to the Starhawk universe.

Labeled as the “Cypress Map Pack”, this bundle will include two brand-new maps called  “Cypress: Collider” and “Cypress: Origin”. Taking the fans’ feedback, both these maps will offer players a whole new environment that includes luscious greens, plants and massive trees for ground troop cover. And as requested, these maps will also feature some pre-built structures to help get the flow of the match going.

Patch Notes

Prestige Levels: In the initial version of Starhawk, we supported levels 1-50. To be quite honest, we thought that would have the player community covered for quite some time. However, we had underestimated the rate at which people were going to get through the levels so we had to accelerate the release of our prestige levels for those players who are above 50. The Prestige levels in Starhawk are not numbers; they’re a Greek symbol ranking of ALPHA through OMEGA. The Greek symbol will be displayed by your name in-game. These are very hard ranks to achieve and the jump from level 50 to ALPHA is steep because these are really intended for the hard-core community.

New Space Homeworld “Waypoint”: In Starhawk, Homeworld’s are like lobbies. They are 3D levels where you and your friends can go to party-up, talk tactics and then pick a game to join. This new Homeworld is a cool space station. We added this because we really wanted players to enter a deep-space “lobby” to mess around in.

Team-Balance Fixes: There were some bugs in the party/clan cohesion system where servers would keep parties and clans together in *ALL* cases and this resulted in some brutally mis-matched games. This has been fixed! There were some other issues that resulted in messed-up team balance and we have resolved those as well. Should be a ton better!

Revamped Voice Chat System: During the initial launch of Starhawk we received reports from the player community about voice-chat dropping after a few games or in some cases, the voice-chat would simply not work. As you can imagine in a deep, team-based game like Starhawk, voice-chat is critical. So we did a ton of digging to find-out what the issue was and it ended up requiring a change to our Client/Server voice system. This change makes the VOIP far more stable and resolves the voice connection issues that some players had been experiencing in the past.

Push-to-Talk Option: This was requested by so many players, and in concert with the revamped Voice Chat System, the PTT option really is a great addition. Now players have the option to have their microphone turn on when they press L3 rather than automatically when they talk. I guess, too many players were being yelled at by their Moms, had crying babies in the background, or hell, maybe both! You can find the PTT option in the Audio Settings menu in the Uplink.

Vulture Jet-Pack Eject: Players are now allowed to dismount while flying around in a Starhawk if they have a handy dandy Vulture Jet-Pack equipped.

Rift Barrels on Mini-Map: To help aid players and their use of the Build & Battle system, we decided to add small icons on the mini-map where we’ve placed the Rift Energy Caches — those are the barrels that you shoot that burst open with Rift Energy that you can spend to build your arsenal of destruction. The blips on the map are displayed when the barrels are active and are *NOT* displayed when the barrels are waiting to respawn.

Bug Fixes: These are not as super-sexy as free maps, but the fact that they are fixed will really help the community. We also addressed some host migration issues, a number of crashes and network instability issues, and even the laggy pick-up bug was fixed as well.

Ranked Option: Another feature that was requested by players was really two requests related to how games post stats. The first point brought up by players was regarding stat-padding going on in password protected games, and since those games were password protected, they should not count as real ranked games. Now, you can still have a very private game with a password but your stats will not post. Also, if you are having a Clan vs. Clan game you have the option to turn stats on or off — because it might be a practice or scrimmage. Furthermore, if you are doing a Clan Scrimmage (your clan in both Rifter & Outcast slots) the stats will *NOT* post to the server. This is to keep clans from stat-padding in locked-out games.

Skills Shortcut at the Respawn Screen: Players really wanted a quick way to change skills without having to leave the respawn screen. So…we added a little tab in the upper right corner of the respawn screen that allows you to press TRIANGLE and jump right to the skills menu! Oh, and we also now allow you to change your skill at other places in the Uplink instead of only in-game.

Build & Battle Icons While Respawning: Another thing we did to help players when using the Build & Battle system was to display a simple graphic icon of each of the structures on the battlefield as the player is drop-poding into combat. This simple change really helps players know what structures are already built and helps them make better use of the stuff their team has built. Not to mention it helps let you know immediately where you should run when you crack-open your drop-pod!

Display Nearby Build & Battle Structures: There are now some new visuals to help players recognize Build & Battle structures that are built nearby. For starters, any time you place a structure; Starhawk very clearly displays how many are nearby. It also now highlights those nearby structures on your map *AND* displays some markers on the edge of the screen to help inform you that not only is there a structure nearby, but which direction it is.

Cooldowns for Host Kick and Team Switch: There were a number of exploits that could occur in the original version of Starhawk where players would change teams rapidly or a host would quickly kick a ton of players. That can no longer occur because we track when you perform one of these actions and block you from doing it again for a set amount of time — and we can tune the time if we need to.

Interactive Music Update: After playing Starhawk for so many hours, we really felt that the music was not kicking-in as frequently as we wanted it to. There were many times when you’d be in the heat of combat and there’d be no music at all. We felt this hurt the pacing and in fact some players in our community noticed the same thing. So the 1.03 Update includes some new tweaks to the interactive music system and the more frequent music makes a big difference.

Capture the Flag Scoring Change: We’ve been playing CTF in Starhawk a ton here in the studio and we’ve always felt that there were too many games ending in draws or times when the match would get into awkward stalemates. So with the 1.03 Update, we have changed one of the key rules for CTF and one of the key contributors to the stalemates. Now, to score a point in CTF, you need to take the enemy flag back to your base — period. Your team’s flag does *NOT* need to be there for you to score. Now certainly, your team still needs to play defense because you don’t want the enemy team taking your flag and scoring, but this change makes the pacing so much better. Much faster and far fewer draws and stalemates.

Sorting Unlocked Customization: Now this is more of a simple convenience thing but we changed the way the various characters and vehicle customization options are presented so that the unlocked ones are always displayed at the top of the list. Not a super-big change at all but I thought I’d include it here.

Drop-Pod Upgrade: One of the things that we were experimenting with during our Starhawk playtests to help combat “base-ravaging” was to make the Drop-Pod more deadly. Our whole design goal with the drop-pod system was to make the act of respawning in your home base an incredibly powerful weapon. This was to help combat against “base-ravaging”. After a lot of review, and play testing and tweaking, we decided to upgrade the drop-pods to be more maneuverable *AND* have an increased impact radius. This along with some changes we made to the respawn timer really makes a huge positive impact on the reduction of “base-ravaging”.

Custom Music via XMB: In Warhawk we added support for your own music and we’re doing the same in Starhawk. The 1.03 Update now allows you to play your own music through the XMB. So if you want to experience Starhawk’s unique Build & Battle gameplay while blaring Pat Benatar you totally can!

As seen on the official PlayStation Blog.

Multiplayer Games You Might Have Missed, Week 1 – Blacklight: Retribution

This is a weekly article I’ll be doing about multiplayer games that have been quietly making a splash.

[youtube id=”3wn3oXMLS_Y” width=”600″ height=”350″]

Let Lefty know we sent you!

Blacklight: Retribution, a free-to-play game on Steam developed by Zombie Studios, is one of those FPS titles that really makes me think, why the hell isn’t CoD like this!  Everything I’ve seen of it makes it look like a very slick, simple, and overall fun game.  The controls look intuitive, the animations look great, the sound design is really cool, and in general this looks like one of those games with a future.

The customization system takes a hint from RPGs (the games, not the launcher) and makes picking your class less about what weapon has the best recoil and more about picking parts for your weapon that suit your playstyle.  This is a mechanic that is slowly creeping its way into the major titles (BOII) and it’s really nice to see a small title proving the idea is sound.

Sadly, I can’t play BL:R because I don’t have a PC (building one this winter), but the buzz around BL:R makes it out to be a great game with a few minor balance issues.  If you have the time and space to download it, I highly suggest you do, because, well, it’s free and awesome!

Check it out on the Steam store!

Why Battlefield Premium Is Worth The Price

In my last post about Premium Content Subscriptions, I talked about the dangers they pose to gaming.  They give publishers free reign to distribute whatever they want without the filter of a XBL or PSN marketplace.  Though not required reading, I suggest you check out my last post to give this article more context.

Considering my, and a lot of other gamers’, apprehensions concerning  Premium Content Subscriptions like ELITE and Battlefield Premium, it might come as a surprise that I bought and freaking love Battlefield Premium.  I don’t have an ELITE Premium subscription, and we’ll get into why in a minute.  For right now, let’s just talk about BF Premium:

First, if you include the B2K DLC (I don’t because I pre-ordered BF3 and got B2K for free), BF Premium ($49.99)  saves you $10 off the total cost of buying each DLC release individually.

Second, you get that DLC 2 weeks before non-premium players.

Third, you get substantive exclusive content like weapon & player camouflages, dog tags, BTS/Tips and Tricks videos, double XP, and the ability to reset your stats, among other things.

Considering ELITE Premium offers basically the same content and in a similar fashion to BF Premium, why don’t I have both?  Well, because MW3 and it’s DLC, in my opinion, sucks.  Don’t get me wrong, I love COD.  I’ve been playing since WAW and I’ve loved just about every game since.  In fact, BF3 is the first Battlefield game I’ve ever played, so you can save your fanboy argument for someone else to ignore.  It’s not that MW3 is a “bad game” in and of itself, it’s that when you compare it to previous COD titles, MW3 doesn’t stand up against them very well.  Hell, most people still think COD4 is the best COD ever.  But buying into a premium subscription service is like saying “good job” to the developer of the game.  Considering how I feel about MW3, I think not buying ELITE Premium was a good way of saying “better luck next time, thanks for the let down,” to IW.

What makes MW3 suck to me is that it has balance issues on par with MW2’s (OMA+Danger Close Noob Tubes), terrible network management (lag comp), broken spawns and spawn logic, and is just overall too noob-friendly (support killstreaks) to cater to my level of experience.  The clan ops are slightly redeeming, but still, you’re competing with the general player population, not an elite or highly-skilled selection of players (like in Game Battles/MLG).  Again I’m not saying you should think the same way I do, just that I don’t think MW3 lives up to the COD standards of quality or does much for the franchise overall, which is why I also think Treyarch’s upcoming Black Ops 2 has a lot to prove. You can read more about my thoughts on that subject here.

BF3 on the other hand, has a lot going for it in my mind.  EA gave DICE the ok to take some major risks with BF3’s development because they wanted to directly compete with Activision and COD.  BF3 runs on a substantially upgraded (basically new) engine, it’s a relative overhaul of the BF franchise from both a visual and gameplay perspective.  And its DLC is downright ambitious.  Aside from new guns and vehicles, BF3 DLC has included maps that are fundamentally a complete 180 from the stock maps.  The Close Quarters DLC maps look, feel, and play in a totally new and different way than BF3 has played since it released, which is something that MW3’s DLC has yet to do.  Armored kill also looks to be offering a new and different feel with it’s massive maps and new vehicles.

That’s why I’m willing to pay for BF Premium.  The DLC for BF3 is more than just new maps, it’s a new experience.  Don’t get me wrong,  BF3 does have some big issues like a busted party system and the rent-a-servers are typically setup with absurd ticket counts, which makes finding a quick game of rush a chore.  But overall, I just enjoy BF3 more than I do MW3.  Between it’s core design, continued support, and game-changing DLC, BF Premium is worth the extra $49.99 to get all the content DICE has to offer.  One other thing of note is that BF Premium is a one-time, game-specific service and charge, unlike the annual ELITE Premium service renewal.  That may or may not be a good thing depending on whether or not you want the services premium offers for each game.

Now, some people might not like the Close Quarters maps because they’re designed for run and gun (and camping) infantry combat, but that’s my point.  It’s so different from the stock BF3 experience that even some diehard BF3 fans don’t like it.  How many MW3 maps are like that?  To me, the MW3 maps all feel like MW3 maps.  The CQ maps don’t feel like BF3 maps and I can almost guarantee that the Armored Kill maps won’t either.  What about the Face-Off maps?  Well their limitations (player count/playlists) make them not nearly as dynamic as a full-scale map, which makes them get old fast.  Aside from a lack of vehicles, CQ doesn’t have much in the way of limitations.

I’m not opposed to premium content subscriptions but I’m not going to pay for content I don’t want.  I waited until the first paid DLC releases happened for both MW3 and BF3 before buying into the premium services, and I’m glad I did.  I let the games prove their worth before buying more content for them.  While EA and their Origin service might have made a sport out of screwing gamers over, BF Premium is worth the money, in my eyes.  ELITE Premium, on the other hand, doesn’t seem worth it because the DLC for MW3 is pretty stale and boring.

But that’s just my opinion.  Do you feel like Battlefield and/or ELITE Premium are worth the extra money?  Let us know in the comments.

Thank you for reading.

Battlelog Update Allows Loadout Customization and Reveals New Weapon Attachment, No HC Mini-Map?

By now, many of you may have noticed a fancy new feature that has made its way to Battlefield 3’s Battlelog service.

Since yesterday’s update, players now have the ability to customize their loadouts in-browser and apply it to their in-game set up. Not only that, but it’s also possibly copy a friend’s loadout and apply it to your own. Additionally, it has been integrated to work between the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, according to the latest Battlelog news update. This also extends to vehicle upgrades.

Interestingly, we’ve recently noticed, as have many others, that a new attachment for the L96 sniper rifle has been spotted under ‘Accessories’. Scrolling through the various optics available to the L96, you’ll eventually come across a 20X Ballistic Scope, which currently shows up as being locked.

It could be speculated that this is to prepare for the larger maps of the upcoming Armored Kill DLC, though it seems to be limited to only the L96.

In other news, DICE lead designer Gustav Halling recently hinted at allowing players to turn off the mini-map in hardcore mode. He stated on Twitter, “just added a request to be able to disable minimap in HC mode, expect it on PC first in the upcoming server updates!”

Similarly, community manager Daniel Matros also recently hinted at allowing server admins to tweak weapon rotations in the new Gun Master game mode, introduced in Close Quarters. You can read more about what he had to say here.

Have you had a chance to try out the new Loadout feature? Are you glad the mini-map might soon be able to be toggled on and off?

Battlefield 3 – Battlelog and Server Update August 9, Where is the August Bonus Content Drop?

The Battlelog as well as the Battlefield 3 servers will be undergoing a quick update tomorrow, August 9.

“Tomorrow we are bringing a server update and a Battlelog update with some minor additions. This means that Battlelog will remain offline between 10:00 CET to 11:00 CET tomorrow on the 9th of August,” says DICE in an official Battlelog update.

You can use this link to convert time zones.

Here are some of the fixes and changes you can expect to see tomorrow after the update is complete.

Server update:

  • XP2 weapons were unavailable on unranked servers
  • scoring was disabled altogether on unranked server

Battlelog:

  • You can now accept/reject party invites
  • Vote system has been fixed in polls
  • Server browser shows the name of the current map
  • User can now see if he/she has all unlocks for a vehicle in the Vehicle Stats page in the Unlocks section

But that’s not what you’re really waiting for now, is it? We all know August is expected to see a mysterious Premium “Bonus Content Drop.” So where is it? We do still have the rest of August ahead of us, but if we’re nice enough, maybe the jolly bearded man in red and white at DICE will grant our wishes tomorrow! We can only hope.

Battlefield 3 – Gun Master Game Mode to Acquire Different Weapon Rotations?

Included in the latest Battlefield 3 expansion pack Close Quarters, many welcomed the addition of the brand new game mode Gun Master with open arms.

Based on the popular Counter-Strike game mode, Gun Master cycles players through a set number of weapons – earning new weapons after every two kills achieved – as they progress to more difficult-to-use items like the knife. For a better picture, check out our round up of gameplay videos demonstrating the Gun Master game mode.

Though it provided a fresh experience for Battlefield 3 players, it did not come without a few of its own frustrations. It quickly grew stale due to the simple fact that the rotation of weapons used in Gun Master were always the same. Who wants to use the same weapons over and over again?

Luckily, DICE global community manager Daniel Matros has recently hinted at making a few changes.

“Today, looking at giving admins more control what weapon list your gunmaster can run,” he mentions on Twitter while playtesting in the DICE studios.

While it has yet to be officially confirmed, it should hopefully give Gun Master fanatics something to look forward to.

Other than what’s already included, what weapons do you think would work well in the Gun Master game mode?

Black Ops 2 Multiplayer Trailer Analysis – On Map Design

Many thanks to our own David Veselka for pulling the screen shots and tracking down other materials from the BOII trailer that appear in this video. You can check out the original trailer breakdown article with screenshots by David here.

[youtube id=”n_AR-EYZxIU” width=”600″ height=”350″]

One of the things I haven’t heard much about after yesterday’s release of the first Black Ops 2 multiplayer trailer is map design.  Considering how big a point of contention map design has been in both BO1 and MW3, it comes as a surprise that people haven’t been talking more about the info the trailer had.

The thing that struck me as most obvious was that the design mentality behind some of BO1’s best maps is back, but with a twist (hopefully for the better) in BOII.  Those wide open killzones and absurdly obvious lines of sight in BO1 have been replaced with more condensed routes and cover without ignoring what made BO1 maps good, symmetry and balance.

From what’s been made available by the work of reddit user zamzarvideo, so far, it looks like BOII’s maps are going to be very well balanced, lend themselves to fast fast paced gun-on-gun action, but large and open enough to avoid the constant clusterfuckery of MW3 maps like Arkaden and Dome.  Hopefully, Treyarch’s spawn system avoids revenge and “in-the-action” spawns and leans more towards the notion that death is a penalty and should cost you your place on the map, not give you free kills by spawning you right behind the guy that just killed you.

To quote youtube user cwatz1221 regarding IW’s design of MW3:

They made the game more frustrating, less rewarding and lowered the gap between good and bad players.

Deathstreaks, instakill firepower, close quarter sprayfests and so forth aren’t satisfying to get kills with. You feel no reward or satisfaction. On the otherhand you feel insanely frustrated to get killed by them.

Let’s hope that Treyarch has learned from their mistakes in wasting space (Berlin Wall) and MW3’s successes in making maps that felt safe to run around on (Lockdown), provided the spawn system didn’t screw you over or a camper didn’t kill you as you ran past their corner.  BOII is shaping up to be another solid entry in the CoD franchise by Treyarch, if not their best ever.  BO1 had it’s problems, but Treyarch is obviously listening to the community and working to correct all the things BO1 did wrong,

Please share your thoughts in the comments and stick around for the latest info regarding BOII right here on MP1st.

Thank you for reading.

Black Ops 2 Multiplayer Trailer Analysis – Brand New Create-A-Class, See Through Walls, Spectator Mode and Much More

At last, Treyarch and Activision have given Call of Duty fans around the world their very first look at Black Ops II’s multiplayer in action.

If you missed it, make sure to check out the new trailer here before heading on to our in-depth analysis below!

Essentially, this trailer can be broken down into eight different sections, plus a few extra – each one demonstrating a different loadout style as well as different game mechanics and features that come along with it.

Now, each of these loadouts are, obviously, not presets within the game, but custom loadouts that can be tweaked via what seems to be a point-based or slot-based system, something that’s been eluded to for quite some time now. Player will be able to choose a primary with up to three attachments, a secondary with up to two attachments, up to six perks, two pieces of equipment, and lastly, what seems to be a slot for different proficiencies or other equipment. Killstreaks/pointstreaks are counted in the lower right-hand side of the HUD.

Of course, players will not be able to fill every single slot and some will most likely cost more points than others. Most likely, there will always be a compromise – something that must be given up in order to reap the benefits of your desired loadout.

We’ll take a look at the various set ups below, though these should just give an idea as to what sort of creative loadouts players will be able to come up with when Black Ops II releases November 13.

Updates at the bottom of the page

IamElectro

Here, we see a general loadout of two weapons, each with an attachment, three perks and two pieces of equipment. The equipment here seems to be the theme of the loadout as this character is carrying a device that can be thrown and stuck to a surface, stunning near-by enemies. We also get our first look at the HUD including a mini-map, point counter, bullet/equipment indicator and a killstreak/pointstreak counter.

Something I found immediately striking was the colorful environments and improved lighting, something Treyarch was criticized for lacking in previous titles.

The last image shows off the “revenge” award, the new player card system and the M8A1 assault rifle with it’s selectable fire modes.

8BitWallBanger

Alas, we get our first look at the weapon attachment which will allow players to see through walls. This player is using the PDW-57 MMS attached with a scope which will reveal nearby enemies through walls and smoke.

Many players will be happy to know that the Attack Dog killstreak is returning in Black Ops II (above) as is the famous Dolphin Dive (last image).

Runz4FunzNGunz

This player is sporting some fancy weapon attachments and equipment. First, the ACOG/Red Dot hybrid optic attached to this LSAT light machine gun demonstrates customizable reticles, as in previous titles.

Second, the deployable “Guardian Suppressor” seems to be a brand new piece of future-tech that slows down enemies or impedes the vision of anyone in it’s path, allowing yourself or teammates to get a clear shot. Should prove a useful piece of equipment in choke-points or for defending objectives.

This player below also earns the “Bloodthirsty” award.

Flyswatter

As the name implies, this player and his customized Chicom CQB is set up to take out enemy drones or aerial support with his equipped heat-seeking launcher.

The Dragonfire is sure to be a deadly (or annoying) unmanned killing machine to be reckoned with. Luckily, infantry fire will do the trick, earning the “Flyswatter” award, though not as effective as the FHJ-18 AA launcher shown below.

We’ll also get a look at the view from the Dragonfire as this player achieves the “Red Baron” award.

DollarsandCenturions

This squad of three have the right idea when it comes to taking on the heavy opposition ahead.

Lots of stuff to look at here as we see an AN-94 equipped with a specialized optic that highlights enemies on the battlefield for easier target acquisition. However, the player’s field of view seems severely limited when aimed down this particular sight.

Accompanying him are two “centurions” each equipped with a riot shield that have the ability to be embedded into the ground, providing cover as the wearer disengages and can now return fire.

I’ve also included a neat shot of a soldier reloading his weapon. Notice the attention to detail as the bullets within the magazine are clearly visible.

Lastly, the enemy decides to bring in ground support as a chopper drops of an A.G.R. drone equipped with powerful weapons, earning the “Crackdown” award. It seems as though the player has the ability to leave the A.G.R. at any moment to return to later, though it will surely leave it vulnerable if not hidden properly.

MostlyUseMeBlade

This set up demonstrates one “extreme” that the new loadout system can be taken to. Here, we see a focus solely on a secondary weapon, the Raging Judge revolver, backed up by a trusty knife as well as six different perks.

What’s most interesting in this section of the trailer is that it seems like players will actually need to switch to the knife in order to be able to use it. However, it will still be a one-hit-kill, as in previous CoD titles.

Throwable tomahawks also return in Black Ops II, though highly upgraded since we last saw them (last image).

tOObMonay

Another “extreme” set up has our favorite Treyarch developer, David Vonderhaar, sporting not one, but two sniper rifles – one with a high-powered scope, and the other with iron sights.

You can get a better look at what is presumably a .50 caliber customized DSR 50 on this soldier’s back as he carries another customized Ballista in his arms in the third-person shot below.

Nice “4 Piece,” DJVahn!

ShotgunSark

Mr. Sark is all about fancy gadgets in this set-up.

It’s not quite clear what exactly the gadget in the first couple of images actually does, but the customized M1216 Shotgun attached with a laser sight is surely devastating. This laser sight attachment should prove useful for those preferring to hip fire their weapon, such as this shotgun.

The last two images demonstrate some fancy C4 work – a must in any CoD title.

Drones

Unmanned aerial drones will obviously play a big part in both the single player and multiplayer of Black Ops II. Here, we see a large number of drones circling the skies above. Could this be a scene from the special type of free-for-all Wager Match that was previously mentioned, or perhaps another type of killstreak/pointstreak?

Below, you can see the “Kamikaze” drone in action as it descends upon one poor soldier.

E-Sports

Treyarch has stated their intentions to bring E-Sports to the forefront in Black Ops II’s multiplayer and we finally get to see what they’ve been working on.

The biggest addition here is what seems to be a dedicated spectator mode, which is what we’re looking through during the last sequence of the trailer as this match is being shoutcasted in typical E-Sports fashion.

Interestingly, you can see the HUD list not two, but three different teams or factions in this particular match. You’ll also get basic info like the player’s name, though this is most likely customizable.

Conclusion

In all, Treyarch seems to be brining a lot the to table with Call of Duty: Black Ops II, including improved graphics, a revamped create-a-class system, a brand new setting and a ton of exciting multiplayer features. We can’t wait to get our hands on some multiplayer action this November.

What did you think of the trailer? What did we miss in this analysis? Make sure to let us know in the comments below and we’ll update the piece accordingly!

Updates

1. Many have suggested the gadget “ShotgunSark” was holding at the beginning of his sequence to be a tactical insertion.

2. Reddit user zamzarvideo was able to piece together two maps featured in the trailer.

Modern Warfare 3 Xbox 360 Update 1.20 Patch Notes, New Playlist Update Released

Earlier today, Infinity Ward released the patch notes for title update 20 or patch 1.20 for the Xbox 360 version of Modern Warfare 3.

The patch was believed to be the nineteenth downloadable update, but Infinity Ward’s Community Coordinator, Candice Capen, has clarified to MP1st friend Moriarty1975 that the numbering on the official forums is off.

She explained, “18 was actually 19 and 18 was an emergency,” thus today’s patch was indeed title update number 20 or patch 1.20. She also stated that the issues with “the Chaos mode leaderboards have been fixed.”

Here are the patch notes:

  • Support for Elite drops 19-24 (the new drops are now live for paid Elite subscribers on Xbox 360)
  • Matchmaking improvements to use first party country if DML data isn’t available
  • Additional logging for matchmaking
  • Update to Face Off spawn logic
  • Added logic to make Terminal count as an original map
  • Fix for XM25 challenges not registering properly
  • Fix for exploit that allowed change of a UAV into a second Ballistic Vest

In addition, a playlist update was also released to “fix [the recent] issue when using attachments with new M16A4 changes in Modern Warfare 3 – X360 version: 1.8.594.1 PS3 version: 1.8.475.4,” announced Infinity Ward. As you may recall, six weapons were buffed recently, including the M16A4.

It’s Official, DayZ to Become a Standalone Game

Yesterday marked a very important day for the development team behind the post-apocalyptic, zombie-survival Arma 2 mod DayZ as it reached over 1 million unique players in less than four months.

So, what can the team do to possibly celebrate such an achievement? How about officially announce a standalone version of DayZ?

That’s exactly what creator Dean “Rocket” Hall announced today via his Tumblr blog:

“That’s right, this is actually happening – DayZ will be developed as a standalone game, with me as project lead, by Bohemia Interactive. This is the fairy-tale outcome for a mod that many would have said impossible four months ago.”

He added, “development and updates of the mod will continue in parallel with the development of the game, so anyone who is playing the mod now will be able to continue to do so. The project will follow the Minecraft development model; fast iterations with the community alpha available for a heavily discounted price.”

He stresses that questions will be answered in time – hopefully over the next coming weeks. For now, fans can visit the new DayZ home page at www.dayzgame.com.

Hall ends his post with this fitting quote:

“Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end, but it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.” – Winston Churchill

Are you excited to see DayZ finally become a standalone game? Let us know in the comments below!

Modern Warfare 3 August Elite DLC Drops Review

Today, Xbox 360 Premium users were treated to the second-to-last batch of content for the Elite Premium service. To many’s disappointment, this drop in particular does not come with any sort of multiplayer maps or modes. With drops 19-21, you’ll be getting two Spec Ops missions, Light ‘Em Up and Special Delivery, alongside a new Spec Ops game mode, Chaos Mode and a set of new achievements. As always, I will go in depth with each of these items and give you my thorough opinion on each.

First and foremost, I think it’s fair to say that the Spec Ops mode is not nearly as popular as the beloved Zombie mode from the Treyarch team. It’s nice that Infinity Ward is trying to push their own survival mode to their fanbase, but they should not do it at the expense of the multiplayer. Each Elite drop should contain multiplayer content, because that is what Call of Duty is solely known for. At the surface this disappoints me, because some of the Spec Ops missions are rather good, but they lack re-playability. Maybe we were spoiled with three multiplayer maps from last month’s drops that Infinity Ward felt the need to push out the final bundle of Spec Ops modes to it’s fans? Either way, these will be the last Spec Ops missions you play as a Modern Warfare 3 Elite Premium owner, as next month will be three multiplayer maps, Gulch, Boardwalk and Parish. You can check those out right here.

Spec Ops Missions – Light ‘Em Up

On to Light ‘Em Up. The mission has you set up to rescue a VIP that is detained within Makarov’s castle. You take control of a small helicopter and you must breach the compound, extract the VIP and and evacuate before light hits the horizon. If you’re up in the helicopter, you have the choice to move it where you want, while you rain down hell with a noob tube. Once you clear out the courtyard, you pick up your ground buddy and move to the next location. At this location, you get off and storm the interior, killing bad guys and proceeding towards the VIP that needs rescued. Once you rescue this VIP, you battle your way back to the helicopter that is providing you with air support. Once you rendezvous with the helicopter at the end, you throw down a smoke marker and the entire compound is blown to hell by an incoming air strike. While this mission isn’t too long, it’s still a lot more fun than Special Delivery. As always, the re-playability lacks on these Spec Ops missions.

Spec Ops Mission – Special Delivery

In Special Delivery, your job is to aide and rescue a downed allied crew at a nearby crash site. One person is up in the Osprey while the other secures the ground and calls for care packages to be dropped. While you fly into the fray like a boss in your Osprey, you’ll get to kill several helpless enemies while your partner plants demo charges as you move towards the crash site. You get to switch between your two main weapons in the Osprey, but either will literally obliterate anything in it’s path. This mission can get quite repetitive, and it doesn’t offer anything quite new or refreshing. It’s a good mission, but I feel like this is something we’ve played over and over again.

Spec Ops Mode – Chaos Mode

I got to try out Chaos Mode on Dome, and why this wasn’t an original game mode to begin with is beyond me. I haven’t had this much fun on Modern Warfare 3 in a long while. They did not disappoint with naming this Chaos Mode. It truly is chaotic. You’re pit against an entire army of enemies, including suicide dogs and juggernauts, and you must survive and hold out for as long as you can. Chaining high kill multipliers together will net you unique abilities, like adding 60 seconds to the timer, freezing your multiplier, and faster health regeneration to name a few. The higher your multiplier goes, the more perks you obtain. Killing an enemy will drop a dog tag, similar to Kill Confirmed. Picking these up will add to your multiplier counter. Weapons and equipment are scattered throughout the map in random locations, so once you run out of ammo, you can go to any one of these spots to replenish. You’re given a few Final Stand perks to help you out, so getting downed then quickly gaining a kill will pick you right back up. Running out of time then bleeding out your multiplier is a good way for Chaos Mode to end, or simply dying alongside your partner will do the trick as well. This mode is extremely fun because you’re constantly in the heat of battle. You feel the sense of urgency when you see your multiplier running out. This particular content definitely adds to the re-playability of Spec Ops mode, which has needed some attention for a long while. The only downside to Chaos Mode is that it’s only available on four vanilla maps, Resistance, Village, Underground and Dome.

So overall, how do I feel about these drops? I have been known in the past to request more Spec Ops missions due to their uniqueness and fun factor the first few times through. I didn’t think Infinity Ward would dedicate an entire month to nothing but Spec Ops, which in my opinion is a mistake. I feel that there should be some type of multiplayer enhancement each month, whether that’s a new map or mode. With that being said, I would rate the August content a 3/5, due to the lack of re-playability, and the genius of Chaos Mode bumping the score up a point.

Have you gotten you’re hands on the August content yet? Do you feel the same as I do? Let us know in the comments below, and don’t forget that Collection 3 will be available for Xbox 360 owners on August 9th.

The Staples of CoD Past and Present – MOAB Gameplay Commentary and Article

In the below video, I discuss at length how each CoD has had something that the community collectively held up as the pinnacle of success.  CoD4 had quickscoping, WAW didn’t really have much of anything, MW2 had the Tactical Nuke, BO1 was all about teamplay and SPM, and finally, MW3 had the hidden 25 gun-only MOAB killstreak.  Each of these things have been the centerpiece of gaming channels on Youtube and some channels have even exploded because of their achievements with them, gaining thousands of subscribers and millions of views almost overnight.

[youtube id=”Wp6CAYYa0L4″ width=”600″ height=”350″]

Needless to say, things like the MOAB play a big role in CoD’s continued popularity.  Not only does CoD cater to a wide variety of players and skill levels, but a good player can churn out fast-paced high-action gameplay almost at will.  Throw in challenges like Nukes and the highest SPM possible, and you’ve got a recipe for success (obviously).

In retrospect, each staple has had it’s pros and cons.  The Nuke was the first “insta-kill” killstreak that guaranteed at least 6 kills per use and would win your team the game no matter how badly you were losing.  But it also inspired a lot of camping and relying on killstreaks to build your chain up to the illustrious game-ending destruction of 25 kills.

Then came Black Ops.  Because of how easy it was to dominate the opposition for a half decent team, BO1’s staple was teamwork.  The blackbird gave teams an almost hacker-like awareness of the enemy players enabling spawn trapping and map control like had never been seen before.  I can’t even recall how many times I’ve had to run from one side of Launch to the other just trying to catch an enemy or two before they were killed 3 feet from their spawn (ah, those were good times).  The result of this sheer domination was 1,000-kill demolition games and 1VS6 TDM games.  The CoD community is always trying to 1Up itself, and BO1 had the perfect mix of killstreaks and teamwork to lend itself to seeing who could rack up the most kills in a game of Domination on Nuketown or how many Chopper Gunners you could get before the second round of a Demolition game.

What will be the staple of BOII?  For right now, I’d say teamwork and high scores with challenging loadouts (BOII is rumored to have replaced the create-a-class system with a 10 -slot or “point” allocation system that includes your guns/attachments, perks, and equipment).  Whatever it turns out to be, stayed tuned to MP1st as we’ll have the latest info come tomorrow’s big BOII multiplayer reveal.  Hopefully, Activision and Treyarch do us a favor and spill all the beans, instead of just a hiding them up their noses until November.

Pending the beans being spilt, expect a follow up to this article once the info regarding BOII hit’s the web.

Thank you for reading.
