Battlefield 3 Now $39.99 in NA, Expected Maintenance on Online Services Aug 7

Battlefield 3 drops in price for the North American market and DICE sets up to take services offline for maintenance tomorrow, August 7.

Via their official Facebook page, EA and DICE have announced a price-drop for Battlefield 3 in North America. “Battlefield 3 is now $39.99 only in North America. If you’ve been sitting on the fence, this is the perfect time to join our 15 million strong community and experience DICE’s award-winning shooter for yourself,” reads the update.

Now is a good a time as any, considering DICE’s plans to continue support for Battlefield 3 with upcoming expansions, Armored Kill and Aftermath.

Additionally, players on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 should be expecting an online service drop on August 7th from 05:00 GMT until 07:00 GMT, according to the notice banner found on the Battlefield 3 official forum. This drop in online services will, of course, affect online play across all three platforms.

No word yet on what the expected down time is for, though it is speculated that it is to prepare for the August bonus content drop for Battlefield Premium members that has yet to be revealed by DICE.

If it’s indeed the August bonus content drop for Battlefield Premium members, what do you wish it will contain? Feel free to tell us in the comment section below! Also, if you haven’t yet, will you be picking up Battlefield 3 now that the price has dropped?

Does Call of Duty’s Future Depend on Black Ops II?

With the multiplayer reveal of Black Ops II just a few days away, I think it’s safe to say that the hype surrounding Call of Duty is about to hit its highest point yet this year.  But is that enough to keep Call of Duty the mammoth success it’s become?  We all know BOII is going to be the next best-selling COD ever, it’s almost guaranteed considering the kind of money Activision has to throw behind its PR campaign.  But is hype enough to keep COD alive after BOII has been sitting in your console for 6 months?  Don’t get me wrong or take me for some BF3 fanboy, my humble ELITE stats should prove I play the hell out of some COD. It’s just that I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t scared for the franchise right now and upset with the direction Activision has taken it.

Maybe it’s just that MW3 was a disappointment for so many hardcore players, but it feels like a lot, as in the future of COD, is riding on BOII.  For me, each COD up until BOII has felt like it wasn’t that big of a deal.  Sure each new entry in the franchise has been exciting and fun, but it’s never felt like “if this COD doesn’t do well, COD is screwed,” until now.  It probably has something to do with the growing success of BF3 and the competition EA is looking to throw at COD over the next few years, but COD sure feels like it’s supremacy is hanging by a thread right now.

What happens if BOII is a really great game, but we’ve just gotten tired of annual COD of games?  Or even worse, what if BOII is genuinely bad?  What if the lag is worse than ever?  What if there’s a game-breaking balance issue that never gets fixed?  What if MORE noobs get their hands on BOII and camp even harder than they did in the last COD?  All these things have reared their ugly heads before, but have we had enough?

MW3 was probably the first COD to really cause a backlash post-release (aside from MW2 once the OMA+Noobtubes thing was figured out).  Many Youtubers refused to post it with the same frequency as they had pervious COD games, and some Youtubers even stopped posting MW3/COD altogether out of frustration with the game and it’s community of players (Ipwnstar4hire, LeftyOx, 402THUNDER402, etc).  There was even the MW3 Blackout movement, the first major “fix COD” movement to ever gain real traction with the community.  Can COD survive another MW3-scale backlash?  Fingers crossed!

Personally, I think Treyarch is going to release their most ambitious, well made, and successful COD title yet.   Maybe you don’t have much faith in Treyarch or the COD franchise as a whole, which is perfectly reasonable.  It’s a franchise that has been plagued with issues since it’s very beginnings.  But based on the kind of development that went into BO1; maps with interactivity (a first in COD history), probably the most balanced guns ever in COD since COD4 (post FAMAS nerf), excellent DLC, and an improved Zombies experience to name the highlights, I think Treyarch has the ability and the ok from Activision to make a very solid if not great COD game.  Maybe the execution of BO1 left a little (or a lot) to be desired, but there’s no doubt that Treyarch at least tried to do something cool.

There is also no doubt that an overbearing demand from Activision to meet a deadline, incorporate ELITE functionality, and design more noob-friendly game mechanics (Assassin, Support Strike Packages, OP sniper rifles, etc.) made MW3 the mediocre game that some think it is.  Do you think Activsion has eased up on its developers after seeing the mess that MW3 caused?  Do you think that the future of the COD franchise depends on the quality/success of BOII?

I think COD needs an overhaul on the scale of BF3’s, to really keep it going for the next few years.  Something tells me that the next batch of consoles is going to make or break a lot of franchises, but if Activsion doesn’t do something soon, COD and Guitar Hero are going to be sharing a grave in the used games bargain bin at Best Buy.

Let us know what you think in the comments.

Be sure to stick around MP1st come August 7th.  The Black Ops II multiplayer reveal will be getting a lot of hype and dumping a lot of info for us COD players to soak up.  The staff here are among the most dedicated folks I’ve ever worked with and I can guarantee MP1st will be one of the best places to find the full monty on whatever happens this Tuesday.

Thank you for reading.

Need For Speed: Most Wanted – Latest News, Multiplayer and Pre-Order Bonuses

Amongst all the big game titles and hits from the current buzz around Modern Warfare 3’s monthly Content Drops, the upcoming Call of Duty Black Ops II, Assassin’s Creed III, Medal of Honor: Warfighter, the Battlefield 3 expansions and the inevitable release of the Starcraft II expansion, Heart of the Swarm, lies a hidden gem: Need for Speed: Most Wanted.

General Information

Having only just been announced at E3 back in June, there are a few details and news surrounding the new game in the action racing series. Scheduled for a 30 October (US) and 2 November (EU) release, the game is fast approaching but will otherwise be blanketed by the new Call of Duty and Medal of Honor game releases. From images, press releases and videos, it seems like the new game will be following Criterion Games‘ Burnout Paradise-style of gameplay and action fitted with the Need for Speed atmosphere and cops chasing you down.

The actual name, the open-world element and cops seem to be the only things which this title is retaining from the original game (Most Wanted 2005, developed by EA Black Box and Redwood Shores – which is now Visceral Games), with no sign of actual storyline or specific car customization (although you will be able to change a few things such as visual aspects and a select few performance upgrades) – a change in direction from the old-style Underground NFS games. A hybrid of the original and Burnout Paradise, the developers explain the change of direction with “everything we know about open-world driving, just piling it together. All the best stuff about Burnout and everything we did in Hot Pursuit, we’re just smashing them together” and also explaining the shelving of Burnout with “it’s more a case of wanting to get Need for Speed back on its feet after last year [referring to NFS The Run, which was poorly received].”

Multiplayer

Multiplayer info is thin, but the official website details that it will be “non-stop Multiplayer” with “No menus.  No lobbies.  No restrictions.”

Our online play’s about intense competition, team games, massive variety, persistent scoring, deep ranking and endless rewards and Modifications.

Pick a car, meet up with your friends and enjoy a nonstop PlayList of competitive events.

Influence the PlayList by voting with your car. Fight for position on the start line or turn around to take out oncoming rivals at the finish. It’s online driving, as you’ve never seen it.

It looks like Most Wanted will be taking many features from Burnout Paradise’s multiplayer, where the very limited – if not none at all – amount of menus and loading screens made for uninterrupted and seamless gaming, whether it was going from free-roaming to ranked racing or doing challenges with friends. The open world will be your playground, fitted out with massive jumps, long straights, billboards and gates to crash through and an epic location to drive around while having fun with friends.

Modifications, or Mods, will also be featured so one can kit out their cars to be more powerful, faster or be completely different to someone else’s same car. Like Call of Duty’s perk system, or Battlefield’s Specializations system, you will be able to swap out the performance default for something which will make your vehicle perform differently. No exact specifics have been revealed, but pre-order bonuses suggest that everything from faster acceleration to being able to re-inflate tires (after shredding them from a cop’s spike strip) will be available. These additions, along with customizing liveries and paint jobs, will not only make it so you perform differently to other players cars but will be special to you alone – as if you had the opportunity to do it in real life.

Speed Points (or SP for short) will be the in-game point and currency system. Gaining more Speed Points will allow you to “outdrive your friends” by upgrading your cars, which are all fully licensed cars that feature real-life likeness. From exotics like the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 to muscle cars like the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to even a Ford F-150 truck and Hummer H1, the developers reveal that they have the “the wildest selection of cars.”

Autolog, the in-game community hub allowing you to connect to and compete with friends, is being massively upgraded and will be features in Most Wanted, details saying that “intense competition is at the heart of Most Wanted. Autolog™ 2.0 records everything you do in the game, broadcasting your most newsworthy scores, speeds and times to your friends.” It also mentions “Personalization is key.  Teach Autolog™ 2.0 who you really want to beat, and it’ll customize the Recommendations it makes.” The community hub will constantly call-out what your friends are doing and will announce any races, records and special notices if friends have beaten you – and it’s all customizable; you can tune it so you can track all of your friends or focus on a specific rivalry. Autolog will also be a new feature on the Need For Speed website, with the system allowing you to access screenshots (or as they call it Dreamshots) taken in-game, view statistics and leaderboards, and see how your friends are progressing.

Pre-Order Bonuses

The game is available to pre-order for Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC disc and through Origin. A Special Edition is also available for excited fans, which is available for all platforms, and has exclusive pre-order-only features and content. Included with the standard game are two cars – the “beautiful Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale and the latest Porsche 911 Carrera S”, 4 hours of Double Speed Points to unlock faster, a custom “stunning satin black” livery for the exclusive cars, and exclusive Multiplayer Modifications which allow you to have better Mods ranging from acceleration to strength bonuses.

There are also other bonuses for pre-ordering at specific stores which are also region determined, so check with the Need For Speed website and your local retailers. GAME UK and Origin (globally) have an exclusive deal where you will get access to two different packs: the Strike and Speed Packs. The Strike Pack gives you early access to the Mercedes Benz SL65 AMG Black Series, a dominating and powerful vehicle stripped out with added “reinflating tyres” and “power pack powertrain” mods. The Speed Pack has the agile Caterham R500 Superlight with “track tires” and “lightweight chassis” mods.

Something which is currently “Coming Soon” for UK residents – a third pack called the Power Pack – is available to Australian & New Zealand EB Games customers, which gives access to the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor kitted out with a “reinforced chassis” protection mod and a “nitrous dump” mod to power up your takedowns to be extra violent.

Check out some of the latest, action-packed Need for Speed: Most Wanted gameplay:

This writer is very excited for the new Need For Speed game coming from Criterion Games, so expect more multiplayer news as and when it happens. Are you revving up for this Burnout Paradise-meets-NFS/Hot Pursuit hybrid?

Recent Steam Update Breaks Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer

A recent Steam update seems to have broken the multiplayer aspect of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the PC.

We’ve been receiving reports, as well as gathering numerous complaints via the official Steam forums, that one of the latest Steam updates seems to have rendered every game mode in Modern Warfare 2, other than Team Deathmatch, completely unplayable.

Players have contacted both Steam and Activision for support, but either party does not seem to admit responsibility for the issue. Below are just a few of the threads regarding the issue as well some excerpts of players’ frustrations.

Thread 1

I press find game>TDM and i have t owait atleast 40min before i find some games and players, i have to go to privete match w/ my friend and then i can connect to online games. I have seen many forums with this problem. My NAT is open and router is ok, don’t tell me that bullsh*t about buying new one and setting up it properly. 2 my friends have that problem (i have only 2 freiends palying mw2). Mw3 seems to work just fine. I am on PC Windows7.

Thread 2

…today I haven’t been able to connect to ANY MW2 lobby with the exception of Team Deathmatch. What is happening in there, anyone know? Connection problems, or what? When I look at the player numbers in the select game mode menu, the numbers are 100% normal. In Ground War, for example, there are usually a few hundred players, and now it’s about 200. But when I click Groun War, I can wait for hours and not getting a single player to pop in, nor join any game.

Thread 3

…now Mr Burton told me to contact activision already been there and done that, they state they WILL NOT FIX this issue due to it being a steam issue the game was bought/purchased via steam so it’s a steam company issue and they cannot and will not do anything. so if your waiting for Activision to fix the multiplayer aspect of the game then you might as well know they are not doing anything.

Thread 4

This is becoming a complete joke it’s been over a week now since STEAM 345kb update broke the multiplayer aspect of the game. As you will no doubt know every game mode except TDM will not work. What ever happened in that update broke the match making server. Unless every single member here who BOUGHT and OWNS this game contacts steam support and get them to stop blaming the users hardware for the problem, this will never be sorted out.

Forum user no-one2k put it nicely:

I really hope if you love playing the different game modes on this game and you want them to actually work again like me then please contact both Steam and Activision. If they get enough people (talking in the 10000’s) all complaining their games they bought is broken and not fit for purpose they might actually listen and get in touch with Steam technical staff and work this out.

Because right now 50,000 + people can no longer play the multiplayer aspect of the game.. only TDM

Below is a video demonstrating the current issue at hand. You’ll also notice that, though Team Deathmatch is functional, players will sometimes need to wait a minimum of five minutes before being able to enter a game.

[youtube id=”0XXDBZMS_BY” width=”600″ height=”350″]

We hope that either Activision or Steam will eventually be able to resolve these issues and that Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer on the PC will be enjoyable once again.

We’d like to extend a big thanks to Delta Alfa for bringing this to our attention.

On Premium Content Subscriptions – Corporate Greed, or the Path to Open Source Gaming?

Hello, my name is BOSS jediZOHAN and I want to thank MP1st for bringing me on as a contributor.  Without their support, you’d probably never see this.  More importantly though, you wouldn’t have this great website giving you all the latest info on everything MP.  That said, I’d also like to extend a HUGE thanks to you.  Without your support, MP1st wouldn’t be possible.

Below you will find both a video and an article written and produced by me.  If reading isn’t your cup of tea, the video will highlight the bullet points of the article.  For  a deeper look at my opinion of Premium Content Subscriptions, read through the article.  However you end up at the bottom of this page, I look forward to reading what you have to say in the comments.

Enjoy!

[youtube id=”_QnKEF36dX8″ width=”600″ height=”350″]

When Activision first announced COD ELITE Premium, the gaming community collectively uttered a frightened, girlish shriek and ran off to hide in a cave.  The impending doom that was ELITE Premium sent a predictably divisive shockwave through the COD community.  Some saw it as a money-grabbing scam and instantly denounced it as the devil’s work.  While others saw the DLC discount and added exclusive content (clan ops, video content, titles/emblems, etc.) as an acknowledgment on Activision’s part that their DLC costs too much and offered too little.

As time went on and a myriad of problems regarding the ELITE services popped up, people started wondering if their $49.99 was worth the risk of paying for content nobody had seen or played yet.  Eventually, ELITE Premium started living up to the hype floating around its initial announcement.  The ELITE website stabilized.  Clan Ops started happening.  Exclusive emblems/titles were released, etc.  But the experience left a sour taste in a lot of subscribers mouths.

ELITE has shown us a lot about Activision’s plans for the future of COD.  On one hand, Activision is obviously listening to our complaints about paying more than we feel we should for DLC.  ELITE Premium offers a roughly $10 discount over the total price of buying all the DLC for MW3 indvidually, and even throws in some exclusive content and services.  But on the other hand, Activision seems poised to make COD a pay-to-play game.  Imagine having to pay Activision twice just to play COD online, once for the game, then again for the online services.  As gamers that have a special appreciation for multiplayer gaming, I think we can all agree how much pay-to-play MP sucks.  EA did it with BF3’s online pass, much to the dismay of gamers.  But I think something bigger is going on here.

Steam, the “iTunes” of PC gaming, rocked the industry by giving developers a massive platform to release their games on at a reasonable price without the mountain of restrictions they typically faced with traditional publishers (Activision, EA, Rockstar, etc.).  Now, EA has Origin, Activision has ELITE, and just about every gaming platform and company has an “Indie/Arcade” game marketplace with games made by small developers being sold at rock-bottom prices.  Premium subscription services are the big publisher’s way of cutting out the middle man (Xbox Live/PSN) from the DLC content system.  Now, instead of XBL or the PSN facilitating your DLC purchases, you go to the publisher’s website, pay upfront in full for yet-to-be-released content, and buy it without Microsoft or Sony getting a cut of total sales, or the exposure their marketplaces get every time you make a purchase through them (which is where they sell games at an even higher percentage of profit than DLC).  Decreased exposure means decreased profit.

Gone is the worry on the publisher’s mind that not everyone is going to buy all of the DLC they release for a game.  Gone is the percentage of sales profit that would normally disappear in Microsoft or Sony’s pockets.  But most importantly, gone is the competition inspired by an industry of exclusivity agreements, pay-as-you-go DLC, and competitor content pricing feuds.  Basically, if premium subscription packages become the only way to get DLC content, not only could pay-to-play be just around the corner, but publishers could start charging whatever they feel like for the services they offer, like multiplayer matchmaking and monthly DLC releases.  I don’t think I’m alone in saying that I don’t want to have to pay $49.99 to get the $15 of DLC that I want for a game.  But that’s exactly what’s going to happen if publishers manage to squeeze XBL and the PSN out of the DLC hustle.

Something like Steam is going to happen to gaming as a whole and EA is already competing with Steam via its Origin service.  The people behind Steam, Valve (a game developer), created the service as way to become both a developer and publisher.  It gave them the flexibilty to make the games they wanted to make and sell them at a greater profit than the traditional market allowed.  But Steam is “cool” because not only does its library include a plethora of games not made by Valve, most of the games on Steam end up at bargain bin pricing months before they do anywhere else, if they aren’t free to begin with.  On top of that, they have annual sales with HUGE price reductions on many major titles.

Steam has shown the big publishers how successful and profitable removing the middle man (XBL, PSN, Gamestop, etc)  between their content and customers can be.  Though Steam and Half Life made games like Counter Strike (a user-developed mod of HL that was eventually taken over by Valve) possible, based on Activision’s long-standing practice of quantity over quality and running franchises into the ground because of it (Guitar Hero), I can’t say I’m comfortable with Activision being their own distribution system.  Origin is proof of how awry things can go when publishers start their own distribution systems.

However, services like Steam give people like Robert Bowling, the previous creative strategist at Infinity Ward, a say in how much their games cost and how they’re made. If Activision wants to sell an IW game on the “ELITE Network,” they’ll have to agree with the terms IW sets, meaning the price, how and when it’s distributed, exclusivity, and a bunch of other things.   Considering his new company Robotoki’s interest in the OUYA, I’d say people like him deserve a say.  Hate him though you might, Bowling had some good ideas for the future of DLC.  Ideas that, ironically, Activision has implemented, like Terminal for MW3 being free to all players.  The problem is that publishers make so much money they can afford to buy the developers up, which is what happened to Infinity Ward.  Activision doesn’t need to negotiate anything with IW, which means IW does what Activsion tells them to, which means IW games get the quantity over quality treatment (MW3).

Free content doesn’t happen if the people making all the money get to choose whether or not they want to do things that cost them money without charging for it.  Services like Steam basically give companies like EA and Activision free reign to do as they please, assuming of course people are willing to pay for it.  If people like Bowling have no say in the business of pricing or subscription services, which they won’t if the publishers get their way, and we as consumers pony up the dough for services that aren’t worth their cost, the chances of gamers getting something without paying top dollar for it drop to nearly nothing.  That’s a scary thought when you think about games like Mass Effect 3 having all its multiplayer DLC releases being available for free.  What about the Indie/Arcade games on XBL?  Would DayZ be possible if Bohemia Interactive made it so you had to pay for it while it was still an extremely rough, buggy, and frequently hacked alpha?  If the publishers become the creation and distribution systems, games like Minecraft won’t even make it off the drawing board.

The list of woes and worries could go on forever, but there is a silver lining.  If publishers become the new marketplace, maybe internal developer VS developer (think Treyarch and Infinity Ward) competition will drive premium subscription models that include low-cost games and free mods that add substantial amounts of new and innovative content.  Maybe the Steam or EA Console will be even more likely to happen if the competition from Sony and Microsoft tapers off.  Without the revenue from the game marketplace and DLC purchases, XBL, the PSN, consoles, and their development is basically a money hole for Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo.  Considering it looks like the publishers are pushing for that to happen, it seems likely that it will.  And don’t forget the OUYA, which could provide the framework for the future of free-to-play console gaming.

So, what are your thoughts?  Are you worried that the greedy guys in suits at EA and Activision are going to bully you out of every last penny just so you can play your favorite games online.  Or are you glad to see the publishers getting the control they need to make things like a Steam console possible, even if it will only play a single publisher’s library?  Please leave your thoughts in the comments as I’m sure you have something worth talking about to say.

Thank you for reading.

More Battlefield 3: Armored Kill Tank Superiority Gameplay, Additional Weapon DLC to Come?

Yesterday, we got our first look at Tank Superiority, the new game mode available in the upcoming Battlefield 3: Armored Kill DLC, out this September. You can catch up on all the details here, if you missed it.

While the recent footage gave us a good glimpse of some Tank Superiority action on the new map Armored Shield, it still left a lot to be desired.

Luckily, GameSpot was able to provide a much better view of the kind of scenery you’ll be able to enjoy while cruising through the meadows of Armored Shield. That is, if you’re not being blasted by enemy tanks.

[youtube id=”G-RQZPOJX7E” width=”600″ height=”350″]

Details on DLC succeeding Armored Kill are being kept tightly sealed, other than initial Aftermath info. However, during EA’s Summer Showcase event, DICE lead designer Niklas Fegraeus stressed, “we’re talking motor-cycles,” when it comes to Battlefield 3’s fifth and final DLC End Game. We can speculate that much of the gameplay will involve two-man motorcycle teams – one backseat soldier providing cover fire while another handles the steering.

Additionally, the official Battlefield 3 Twitter handle was able to confirm one fan’s inquiry regarding weapon DLC, stating “the December release [Aftermath] and March release [End Game] will include new weapons.” While some promotional material listed new weapons in Aftermath, others did not include a mention. Other than this tweet, no further details have been given regarding End Game.

Thanks, Mckinnon and Jonas, for the tips!

Activision Comments on Bringing An Online Free-To-Play Call of Duty To The Western Audience

Eric Hirshberg, Chief Executive Officer of Publishing Unit, comments on the thought of bringing a micro-transaction-based Call of Duty title to Western audiences.

You may remember the recent announcement of Call of Duty Online, a Call of Duty title aimed at the Chinese audience which features a micro-transaction model. Hirshberg was asked during a recent Activision earnings call if anything of the sort would ever make its way to Western audiences in the future.

“I think we look at the Call of Duty Online game in China on its own merit as a great opportunity,” he responded. “That’s not to say that we won’t gain learnings about how it works in the micro-transaction-based format for the game. And there are a few other regions where that would be very relevant. So — but we certainly are not ready to announce any plans in that regard.”

Call of Duty Elite Achieves “Historic Successes,” 12 Million Registered, 2.3 Million Premium Members

Activision reveals impressive Call of Duty Elite numbers.

“Call of Duty is one of the biggest entertainment franchises of all time, and player engagement with the brand continues to set new records,” says Eric Hirshberg, Chief Executive Officer of Publishing Unit, during a recent Activision Blizzard earnings call.

“With Call of Duty Elite, we’ve had historic successes combined with some important learnings,” he continues. Moving on to Elite numbers, Hirshberg states that “at least 2.3 million premium members and over 12 million registered users are remarkable achievements. When taken in combination with the record engagement of the Call of Duty franchise overall, there is strong evidence of tremendous continued engagement with the franchise. That said, we still feel we have a long way to go.”

What about Activision’s projections for Treyarch’s upcoming go at another annual round of Call of Duty with Black Ops II?

Hirshberg explains, “in preparation for the launch of this year’s game, our team in Treyarch has been working tirelessly to bring our highly engaged community, Call of Duty: Black Ops II. The game had several meaningful innovations and firsts for the franchise. It strikes a great balance between taking the franchise to new places while retaining the core appeal of all Call of Duty games. The game has already generated tremendous buzz, and Treyarch has continued to track ahead of Modern Warfare 3. We’re working incredibly hard with all of our partners around the world to make Black Ops II the biggest entertainment launch of all time for the fourth consecutive year. Call of Duty Elite will also be supporting the multiplayer experience in Black Ops II.”

Battlefield 3: Armored Kill New Gameplay Footage, Tank Superiority Mode Detailed

Along with a number of epic new maps and vehicles included in the upcoming Battlefield 3: Armored Kill DLC, out this September, players will also be getting their hands on the brand new, vehicle-based game mode Tank Superiority.

No longer are details kept in the shadows as DICE’s own Niklas Fegraeus took the stage during EA’s recent Summer Showcase event to give us our first look at Tank Superiority on the brand new map, Armored Shield.

Fegraeus goes on to explain what the new mode is all about: Essentially, two tank platoons will be tasked with dominating a single flag as they try to bleed the opposing force’s tickets down to zero. Think of it as one-flag Conqeust, but in tanks.

Check out Fegraeus’ presentation below, including some quick peeks at other upcoming DLC like Aftermath and End Game.

[youtube id=”wOsP4Nfk9KM” width=”600″ height=”350″]

Thanks to IGN for live streaming the event.

Update:

The latest episode of Inside DICE describes the new Tank Superiority mode as follows:

Tank Superiority is a highly tailored game mode for Armored Kill where platoons featuring Main Battle Tanks and Tank Destroyers fight for control over a single flag – often placed in extremely open and hard-defended terrain. The new game mode resembles a “King of the Hill” struggle and is available on all four maps in Armored Kill, each map featuring a mix of up to 16 tanks.

As there is only one flag with a tight capture radius per map, heavy tank battles tend to flow back and forth as teams seek to bleed tickets from their opponent. For tank drivers, success usually comes by staying together in packs of 2-3 tanks working together. Going solo to the capture point typically means you get overwhelmed by a large group of enemy tanks.

To make sure there is plenty of opportunity for epic tank battles, respawn times for the vehicles are almost instantaneous. If you spawn at your home base and don’t see a tank, there is usually no reason to start legging it towards the front. A few seconds later, a new tank will appear for you and your team mates.

Tank Destroyers and infantry will also play a role in the mayhem, according to DICE. Though Tank Destroyers are more lightly armored and carry the same punch as a regular tank, they are much more nimble and should provide new gameplay opportunities when it comes to planning ways to attack a flag. Will you sacrifice armor for speed? Additionally, though infantry won’t be carrying the brunt of the assault, they will help keep friendly tanks repaired and provide additional firepower through the combined use of SOFLAMs and Javelins.

DICE gameplay designer Gustav Halling leaves us with a few tips to keep in mind before we get our hands on the new mode which he exclaims was inspired by Battlefield: 1943’s Air Superiority:

As a general rule, great tank commanders will make sure to travel in “wolf packs”, as lone tanks are easily picked off by well-positioned enemy tank squads. It’s important to use the new Tank Destroyer class to its advantage by constantly being on the move to become a harder target to hit. The number of lock-ons that you get from enemy guided weapons in Tank Superiority also means you probably want to equip your tank with IR smoke.

Once you have captured the control point on a map, it is normally a good idea to get the hell out of there, as you will be a sitting duck if you cluster up at the flag while the enemy outmaneuver you from higher terrain or from another advantageous position. Capture, then move back to defend is generally the way to play Tank Superiority and survive.

We leave you with three brand new Battlefield 3: Armored Kill images.

Assassin’s Creed III Multiplayer Intro Leaked, Ubisoft Justifies No Public Beta and Talks MP Improvements

Brand new details on Assassin’s Creed III Multiplayer have been revealed in the latest intro video by Abstergo Industries.

The video below originated from Gametrailers, but has since been taken down due to accidental release.

Assassin s Creed III by Jerry_Connelly

The footage seems to confirm the following game modes:

  • Wolf Pack
  • Wanted
  • Assassinate
  • Manhunt
  • Domination
  • Artifact Assault
  • Team Deathmatch
  • Capture the Flag
  • Steal the Artifact
  • Drive the Car
  • Open the Can
  • Meet Ted

Speaking with UK Xboxgamezone, Ubisoft’s very own Damien Kieken discussed many of the new changes and improvements made from the last multiplayer iteration of Assassin’s Creed.

Damien confirmed that the team has been working on Assassin’s Creed III’s Multiplayer since the end of Revelations. Now, those of you who were familiar with the multiplayer in Revelation will know that many AC fans weren’t as fond of it compared to AC: Brotherhood. Since then, the team has taken this feedback and made some changes that should hopefully please fans of Brotherhood.

  • We’ve merged the assassination and stun action on to the same button thus getting rid of the stun prompt. The change leans towards not revealing a stealthy assassin anymore and favors player reactivity.
  • The addition of the Ambush bonus for those players who preferred intercepting targets like in Brotherhood, as opposed to building up an approach in line of sight like in Revelations.
  • We’ve revamped the matchmaking system to make it easier to play with friends in groups.
  • We’ve also improved the map voting system to allow more map choices in rotation, rather than looping on a different variant of the same map at the next rematch.
  • And we’ve built a player focused UI, which helps identify more easily the types of players you will face during a match, as well as progression, results and statistics.

As for why there is no public beta for AC3, Kieken mentions that “doing a beta takes a lot of time; we’d need to polish a version, submit it to the platform holders and support it when it’s out. And all the time put into the beta doesn’t go into the final game. Because we wanted to push so many things into the game, we took the hard decision to favor the final game content instead of doing a beta and we believe it will be favorable in the end.”

Are you excited for Assassin’s Creed III’s multiplayer?

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale Public Beta Arriving This Fall, Leaks Acknowledged

As many of you may know, Sony is currently running a closed Beta for it’s mash-up brawler title, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. Some have been lucky enough to receive a random invite, while others have purchased a PS+ subscription from Hong Kong. For those who are not in the beta, but are hoping to get a chance to test the title, then you’ll be excited to hear that Sony has just announced a Public Beta.

Since the game has been in closed beta testing for a while now, it seems that some people managed to take a peak into the files to find some “hidden” characters, items, stages, and modes that aren’t available in the current beta build. Superbot has finally commented on this through the PS Blog, stating:

“In addition, there was an unexpected and unintended leak in our beta that allowed fans to be able to see some additional content. We’ve enjoyed reading all of the fan reaction and are thrilled that so many of you are excited to learn more our character roster and level mash-ups, however we are still in development and the leaked content does not fully represent the final product nor the incredible efforts that were made to make these elements truly spectacular. This will be evident in the coming weeks as this content is officially revealed, beginning with our next character announcement at Gamescom in a couple of weeks.”

Modern Warfare 3 Collection 3: Chaos Pack, Collection 4: Final Assault and August Elite Content Drops Dated

More Call of Duty content incoming as Activision has announced the two final collection packs making their way to Modern Warfare 3 in the next couple of months. Collection 3: Chaos Pack will be hitting the Xbox 360 first on August 9 while Collection 4: Final Assault will be dropping on September 6.

Activision recently issued a press release describing what each collection packs in:

Call of Duty: MW3 Collection 3: Chaos Pack

“Offers extensive solo and co-op gameplay for the Special Ops enthusiast, featuring four brand new Special Ops Missions — Vertigo, Arctic Recon, Light ‘Em Up and Special Delivery — and FACE OFF maps — Vortex, U-Turn and Intersection. Introducing a new way to play Call of Duty®, Special Ops Chaos Mode delivers a frenetic form of combat that demands players to outlast waves of enemies, while chaining kills on maps littered in power-ups to achieve the highest possible score on fan-favorite multiplayer maps Resistance, Village, Underground and Dome.”

Call of Duty: MW3 Collection 4: Final Assault

“Tailored toward hardcore multiplayer fans, and features five all-new multiplayer maps. ‘Gulch’ sends combatants into a forgotten mining town with mine shafts and equipment sheds for cover.  In ‘Boardwalk,’ fun in the sun on the Jersey Shore means facing enemies on the beach.  ‘Offshore’ and ‘Decommission’ will test players’ sea legs on deadly oceanic oilrigs and among a maze of rotting ocean liners respectively. Rounding out the collection is a trip to the French Quarter in a war-torn New Orleans, where ‘Parish’ pits players against one another amidst the city’s rubble.”

Each collection will be released first on the Xbox Live Marketplace for 1,200 Microsoft Points, or $14.99. Naturally, the content in each collection will be made available to Xbox 360 Premium Elite members earlier with this months content drops, including the Special Ops missions Light ‘Em Up and Special Delivery along with the new Special Ops Chaos Mode, set to be released August 7, according to the official website.

Update: The final Premium Elite content drops, including multiplayer maps Gulch, Boardwalk and Parish, are now scheduled to hit the Xbox 360 on September 5.

Check out these brand new images and descriptions of the new game mode Special Ops Chaos as well as Modern Warfare 3’s Collection 4: Final Assault below (click for larger size).

Special Ops Chaos Mode

“A whole new way to play Call of Duty®, Special Ops Chaos mode delivers the ultimate in arcade mayhem. Experience truly heart-pounding and adrenaline-fueled action while competing for high scores in Resistance, Village, Underground and Dome. Chain kills together against a never-ending onslaught of enemies to increase your combo multiplier and earn performance-enhancing perks. Choose your route through each map to optimize weapon pickups, attack, and escape options. Play solo, split screen or online with a friend to take out as many enemies as possible before they take you down or the clock hits zero.”

Decommission

“A nautical graveyard gives birth to a sprawling shantytown in ‘Decommission,’ a mid-sized multiplayer map populated with chokepoints and fortifications.”

Off Shore

“An off shore oil rig spreads combat across three platforms in ‘Off Shore,’ leading to skirmishes at every turn. Multiple interconnecting bridges, cramped indoor locations and frequent stairwells constantly challenge navigation throughout.”

Gulch

“Decades after fires charred this forgotten mining town, the red rock canyon gains new shades of red in ‘Gulch,’ where the surrounding mountains, mine shafts and equipment sheds craft a perfect setting for high-tension combat.”

Board Walk

“Head to the Jersey Coast for a sunny afternoon in ‘Boardwalk,’ where you’ll face your enemies on the beach and fight for dominance at the arcade while still finding time to cut the line at the rollercoaster.”

Parish

“Wishful thinking won’t keep you safe in New Orleans’ war-torn French Quarter in ‘Parish,’ where a local bombed-out church plays host to close-quarters combat amidst the city’s rubble.”

Medal of Honor: Warfighter – “We’ve Tried Some Very Innovative Things This Time Around With Multiplayer,” Says EA

President of the EA Labels Frank Gibeau reflects on the success of 2010’s reboot of the Medal of Honor franchise and reveals what’s in store moving forward. He also touches on how things will be different this time around with the release of Medal of Honor: Warfighter this fall.

The term ‘authenticity’ seems to have been on the mind of many at EA and Danger Close studios going into the development of Medal of Honor: Warfighter. Check out the latest trailer to see for yourself. In fact, judging by Gibeau’s comments during a recent Electronic Arts earnings call, it could be considered one of the staple features that would hopefully earn this franchise’s reboot a rightful spot in today’s shooter market: “…with regards to Medal of Honor, we brought the brand back a couple of years ago in 2010 with the goal of building a sustainable long-term franchise that was positioned around the authentic experience of being in combat. And we were very proud of the first product.”

Though their first attempt was a success to some degree, even Gibeau admits that there was room for improvement: “It definitely delivered on a lot of fronts. In a couple of fronts, it didn’t. We weren’t as pleased with the quality as we had hoped to be. And our goal with this version was to change things up a bit. We changed the tech base from the Unreal Engine to the Frostbite engine. We added some resources from our DICE Studio in Stockholm. And we’ve tried some very innovative things this time around with multiplayer and some other things.”

So far, the multiplayer is shaping up quite nicely, as demonstrated through some recent gameplay footage and through the latest multiplayer trailer.

As we look forward to Warfighter this October 23 on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, Gibeau ensures that we can expect more Medal of Honor in the future: “So we’re tracking to grow the franchise from the prior version, the 2010 version. And our goal is to continue to have Medal of Honor as part of our portfolio going forward.”

Do you think the Medal of Honor franchise can earn its place among the big boys like Battlefield and Call of Duty? Has it already? Let us know in the comments below!
