Expeditions: A MudRunner Game Hands-On Preview – The Most Physical Type of Driving

Expeditions: A MudRunner Game is the next title in Saber Interactive’s mud-drenched off-road series. Following on the dirty and rugged wheels of the acclaimed 2017 game and its follow-up SnowRunner, this one is promising another series of trials that are not for the faint of heart. It may not be exactly like the real thing but it looks to be as close as it can get, the sensations seem to be there, as well as the challenge – it’s quite stressful and accomplished in the way that it mimics all kinds of rough terrain, to the point of becoming a physical gaming experience, especially if you go for steering wheel support.

Let’s Get Physical

Expeditions is the antithesis of racing games, a different kind of adrenaline rush where speed gives room to calculated advances, each bump and climb potentially endangering your stability and chances of success. Moving slowly and carefully adjusting the vehicle’s state according to the extreme terrain, finding pathways across the landscape that are far less obvious than the expected route but possibly more rewarding, this is as much a driving game as it is a tactical one, requiring a thoughtful approach to every rock and river.

Expeditions: A MudRunner Game Hands-On Preview

One of the beautiful things about Expeditions is that it avoids the pitfalls of a closed circuit for you to follow without much margin for exploration. The research missions you embark on are open-ended, allowing you to consult the map to check the potential course to your next objective, and use a series of gadgets to properly plan the itinerary, such as a reconnaissance drone. It’s not a game to rush through, each stage taking a significant time to achieve and mistakes coming at a high price, often at the cost of a winch or a jack-screw, items that you get to choose before each expedition but on limited amounts.

The initial choice of vehicles, from trucks of many sizes to the smaller all-terrain vehicles, basically off-road, scout, heavy, on-highway, and special categories, is very important due to the different conditions that you will face, and you can take more than one for each expedition. Sometimes you’ll have to tow a heavy truck stuck in a swamp, using your winch and full power to take it back to solid ground, easier said than done.

On the terrain, it’s all about adapting to the conditions as you go. Vehicle control may seem daunting at first, given the apparent excess of options to consider, but a little practice goes a long way. It almost ends up being a case of working out traction and power, adjusting as needed depending on the steep climbs, rock sizes, deep and muddy rivers with strong currents. The straightforward approach to this involves using the right shift, low gear naturally recommended for the times when you need more power and traction. Playing around with differential lock, tire pressure, and various devices to scour the terrain is priceless, also including the Echo Sounder to track the depth of ponds and avoid dangerous situations, but there are a few more depending on the mission requirements. Some of your actions will increase fuel consumption, and its advised to carry some extra jerrycans just in case, or you’ll have to be on the lookout for trade or resource spots where to get some.

Expeditions: A MudRunner Game Hands-On Preview

Drive recklessly and the vehicle will suffer significant damage – and the odds of it taking damage nonetheless are huge, even with the most careful driving ever done. That’s why taking some spare parts for repairs is another thing to keep in mind.

Physics are for the most part amazing, pretty much unrivaled. Expeditions is a gritty, teeth-grinding experience where you’ll want to push on the controller or pedals to the top of your strength because subconsciously it might make all the difference on that final stretch – it doesn’t, but it’s almost impossible for you to avoid doing it anyway. The way the vehicles bounce and how the suspensions work, seeing it struggle as it slides on mud and ponds, it’s a true joy and you can almost feel the mud splashing around you.

Dirty Business

Expeditions: A MudRunner Game Hands-On Preview

Barely scratching the surface of Expeditions: A MudRunner Game, this is already shaping up to be a solid new chapter in the series. There are still some questions up in the air, such as the introduction of cooperative play as in the previous games, something that is rumored but yet to be officially confirmed. As for the rest, it’s bound to be as physically demanding and challenging as it was expected to be, a true test of skills and patience aimed at fans of rough driving and vehicle management. Expect to roll down some hillsides and have the greatest kind of conflicting feelings of frustration and admiration, but always lured into giving it one more shot.

MP1st was given access to a preview build of Expeditions: A MudRunner Game for our hands-on session. Expeditions: A MudRunner Game is launching on March 5, 2024 for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series S|X, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

Deep Rock Galactic Update 1.44 Drops for “Hatfix” This Jan. 9

Ghost Ship Games has released Deep Rock Galactic update 1.44 (PS5 update version 2.000.044), and this is for a “hatfix” that fixes, uh, hats. Read on for the official Deep Rock Galactic patch notes for January 9.

Deep Rock Galactic Update 1.44 Patch Notes | Deep Rock Galactic Update 2.000.044 Patch Notes:

While  the hat issue was fixed for PC gamers a few weeks ago, Ghost Ship confirmed that console gamers were getting the fix this week.

Here’s the note that came with the hat fix for PC last week:

Hello Miners,

Great news: we fixed the hat!

To celebrate our nomination for the Steam Awards last month, we announced a sweet new hat: the

Jagged Bugbasher

! It was supposed to come out shortly after the initial blog post, but something about the hat made the whole game crash for anyone running older Ryzen CPUs.

After a bit of tinkering, we got the hat working now. We’re not really sure why, or how, but it works.
So now you can grab it!

Pictured: An ancient helmet imbued with a strange and powerful aura. Legends say it contains the power to tear apart the very fabric of the world. Or at least to overheat a few CPUs.
All you’ve got to do is log in to Deep Rock Galactic before January 29th at 13:00 CET to claim it. It’s not available for consoles quite yet, but we expect to have it out with the next patch, likely in the coming week.Great! That’s all sorted. Now to take a biiiiig sip of coffee, and check to see who won the ‘Labor of Love’ award!

With Love,
The Ghost Ship Crew

That’s about it. If there are any other fixes or touchups done with today’s patch, we’ll update the article to reflect it.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Has Another Returning Batman Villain

Yet another member of Batman’s infamous rogue galleries is returning in Rocksteady Studios’ upcoming game, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League launch is a few short weeks away, and while Rocksteady is gearing up for release, it seems they’ve let several press members get a bit of hands-on with it before launch. As such, some new information has begun surfacing, with the latest issue of Play Magazine (Feb. 2024 issue) detailing some new things. One of those is the confirmation of a returning Arkhamverse character who likes to ask many questions in the form of riddles. That’s right; the Riddler will be back for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, joining alongside other returning Arkham characters such as the Penguin, Harley Quinn, and, to some degree, Poison Ivy.

This was revealed by Rocksteady’s studio product director, Darius Sadeghian, in the latest issue of Play Magazine.

“We also couldn’t resist bringing The Riddler back for a new set of challenges that will test our Squad members’ minds and bodies,” says Sadeghian. So don’t expect simply to scoop up trophies – it sounds like you’ll need to impress Mr Nigma with your skills.”

I can’t say I’m surprised by this news, as many already assumed he would be in the game. After all, he was prominently featured throughout the Batman Arkham games, though mostly from behind comms and collectibles.

It will be interesting to see how Rocksteady has changed his challenges to accommodate Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League new gameplay. Luckily, we won’t have to long to wait to find out, as Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is out February 2, with early access for Deluxe Editions going live January 30.

Cult of the Lamb New Content “Sins of the Flesh” Update Out Jan. 16; Here’s What’s Incoming

Massive Monster has announced the latest round of Cult of the Lamb new content incoming, and it’s connected to the “free sex” announcement from last month. Titled “Sins of the Flesh,” this will free content drop will be released on January 16.

Cult of the Lamb New Content “Sins of the Flesh” Update Details:

Sins and Disciples

New progression systems add more depth and complexity to managing the Cult of the Lamb. By following the sinful path, your followers will delight in gluttonous rituals, vain buildings and wrathful doctrines. Invite your most loyal Followers to the inner circle of Disciples, a revamped levelling system of Follower progression.

Better Cult Life

Shiny poop, baneful brooms and bigger, better buildings improve busy Cult life. Shiny poops have special effects, like yielding fruitful crops and adding XP to your broom. Levelling up your broom will make chores faster and more effective. To improve automation, there’s also a new tier for the Janitor Station and the Storage Structures so your Followers will take better care of themselves.

Ready, Aim, Fire

Blast heretics away with the new Blunderbuss weapon. When loaded, it fires big damage in close quarters to bring a new combat playstyle for your crusades. If you charge it up even more with a heavy attack, you can aim to snipe enemies from long range.

Outfits, Options and Offspring

Each of your cultists can flaunt their Follower fashion at the new Tailor building. Once unlocked, each cultist can wear their own outfit, with 23 different styles to choose from. But your Cult is getting even more unique. When two Followers love each other very much, they might find an egg. Nurture the egg for it to hatch, then care for the offspring until they’re ready to pledge allegiance to your Cult.

Alongside the Sins of the Flesh announcement, Massive Monster has also revealed that Cult of the Lamb has now sold over 3.5 million copies to date! Mind, this isn’t that surprising given how fantastic the game is. If you haven’t played it yet, go read our review here.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Update 1.005.006 Released for Hotfix 16 This Jan. 9

Larian Studios has pushed out Baldur’s Gate 3 update 1.005.006, which is for Hotfix 16! Read on for the complete BG3 new update patch notes for January 9 below.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Update 1.005.006 Patch Notes | BG3 Hotfix 16 Patch Notes | Baldur’s Gate 3 New Update Patch Notes for Jan. 9:

Hello everyone,

Happy New Year! We’re kicking off 2024 with a sizeable hotfix, handling multiple bugs, issues, and blockers. Have your party members been hoarding trinkets? Did you accidentally send Minthara’s lute to your camp supplies, thinking nobody could possibly need a lute in this day and age? In this hotfix, you will now be able to access certain quest-related items on the spot – even if they’re not held by your current party! How’s that for magic pockets?

Mac players, we’re currently restructuring to ensure that future updates on Mac will arrive alongside their PC versions. It’ll take a bit of time but once finished, there shouldn’t be delays anymore. For the time being, we expect a delay for updates of a maximum of two weeks. We’re sorry for the inconvenience and understand this is frustrating. Thank you for your patience.

Thank you for taking the time to submit these issues to us. If you have any bugs to report, please reach out to our support team. Thank you for playing Baldur’s Gate 3!

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The cross-save functionality will no longer sync modded saves, as they cannot be accessed by console players.
  • Added categories to the Waypoints list, grouping Waypoints by location.
  • You will now be able to access certain quest-related items on the spot, even if they are currently in the camp chest or in the inventory of a companion who is waiting at camp.
  • Added a couple ofPotions of Animal Speaking to the Epilogue.
  • Karlach will now get her scene in Avernus regardless of whether she’s an avatar or a companion.
  • Wyll will now follow Karlach to Avernus correctly.
  • Fixed the Hide Helmet option resetting for companions after saving and loading.
  • Cazador now has of his Legendary Action depending on how many Ritual charges he has. The more charges he has, the more dangerous his Vampiric Swarm is.
  • Fixed several issues with low resolution textures appearing after extended playtimes.
  • Fixed a visual bug where certain doors would reappear briefly when destroyed.
  • Fixed Gale’s dialogue ending abruptly when asking him for a kiss. Enjoy the moment.
CRASHES AND BLOCKERS
  • Fixed a potential crash related to quickloading.
  • Fixed a crash that would occur when unloading and then loading a region.
  • Fixed a crash when changing VSync settings.
  • Fixed a crash when destroying the spiderweb under the Spider Matriarch.
  • Fixed the potential cause of not being able to save the game (Error 701, crashing the game).
  • Fixed a crash that could happen when showing a pop-up message after lockpicking an item.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing the grenade launchers during Gortash’s fight to bypass Turn-Based Mode and deploy grenades in real-time, which could result in a crash. We call that cheating.
  • Fixed a crash that would occur when removing condition-based auras from modded savegames.
  • Fixed a possible crash when getting the available party gold during a trade.
  • Fixed some issues that could prevent savegames made under rare conditions from loading up.
COMBAT AND BALANCE
  • The Spectral Form passive is no longer hidden.
  • Fixed Balthazar’s Spectral Form not triggering when Balthazar succeeded in a Saving Throw but still got damaged.
  • Fixed Auntie Ethel not using Weird Magic Surge when struck by Repelling Blast in Honour Mode.
  • Fixed the scrying eyes’ damage mitigation mechanic in Tactician Mode not working the first time they are damaged.
  • In Tactician difficulty, Cazado now transforms into a unique mist form that threatens his foes with a necrotic aura.
  • Ability Drain will not be able to reduce a target’s ability below 1.
  • Improved the way Legendary Resistance works, now only triggering when it is actually useful.
GAMEPLAY

  • Fixed Group Hide not working properly when a party character is Downed.
  • Myrmidons’ weapons cannot be looted from their bodies after Long Rest anymore.
  • Fixed the Elemental Weapon, Magic Weapon, Heat Metal, and Daylight conditions persisting on the weapon after a Long Rest.
  • Fixed an issue that would affect some players controlling more than one avatar, which caused several naked characters to appear over them after the first Dream Visitor dream.
  • Fixed an issue where reconnecting to a multiplayer session would assign a player an avatar in Withers’ Wardrobe without taking said avatar out of the wardrobe. They don’t open from the inside!
  • Stealing a couple hundred items in one go no longer results in the game becoming unresponsive for quite some time afterwards while it deals with your kleptomaniac overindulgence. It may still freeze for a short period while processing the inventory transfer, though.
  • NPCs on the floor below you, can no longer ‘see’ you looting corpses up there.
  • When handing back stackable stolen items (such as healing potions), you will no longer lose all of them, but only the number you stole.
FLOW AND SCRIPTING
  • Fixed an issue preventing some players from advancing into Act III, looping them back to Act II.
  • Barcus Wroot should now show up correctly at Last Light Inn if you have saved him from his previous predicaments.
  • Fixed avatar Karlach being able to initiate the first romance scene with Lae’zel after proving her worth to Lae’zel, which should not be possible for her due to her engine still not being upgraded.
  • Tweaked the trigger conditions for Lae’zel’s initial romance dialogue after proving your worth to her so that it only triggers if the player controlling her has a single avatar. This is to avoid accidentally triggering the dialogue with an unintended avatar in case you have multiple.
  • Fixed some wrong character behaviours likely introduced in Patch 4.
  • Fixed an issue preventing some dialogue options with Alfira and Nadira from showing up.
  • Fixed Auntie Ethel prematurely teleporting to Act III if you pick up her corpse in Act I.
  • Gale is now less likely to lie to you about wanting to return the Crown of Karsus when making his decision in the endgame.
  • Raphael will no longer make a surprise appearance during the Epilogue if you made a deal with him and then decided to kill him.
  • Wyll will now appear during the initial Epilogue scene if he’s the Blade of Avernus and does not have a partner.
  • Fixed a couple of issues with Mizora’s dialogue getting stuck.
  • Fixed a blocker in the House of Hope in which Raphael wouldn’t appear if he was Silenced in Sharess’ Caress.
  • Fixed a blocker where you were able to banish Hope while she’s chained, preventing you from saving her.
  • The avatar dismissal dialogue will now be closed if the user rejoins the session while it is still active.
  • Duke Ravengard will now correctly hold the bars of his cell door while imprisoned in the Iron Throne instead of staying idle, seemingly unbothered by everything going on.
  • Characters that are attacked while disappearing out of sight will now resume their disappearing after combat ends. Back to the shadows with you.

  • Fixed a texture issue in Character Creation at Low and Medium settings.
UI

  • Fixed ‘(Empty)’ sometimes briefly appearing next to an item’s name when highlighting it on Xbox.
  • Added descriptions for the different difficulty levels in the Additional Combat Mechanics options on Custom Mode.

  • Fixed surface names sometimes appearing above characters on controller.
  • Increased the opacity of certain text boxes in the Reactions UI on controller to improve visibility.

LEVEL DESIGN
  • Removed some world labels that were showing up for a pair of dice in Withers’ chapel in the Epilogue camp that made it look like they could be picked up. Also swapped out a cutting board.

  • Fixed Gerringothe Thorm’s Sublimation ability tooltip incorrectly stating that it should kill the target instantly.
  • Wyll now has a line during the ending scene when realising the tadpoles are gone.
  • Added an extra dialogue option when talking to Shadowheart in the Epilogue to fix a path that only gave you one choice.
  • Fixed the Wrathful Spirits condition saying the affected entity is Immune to all damage instead of Vulnerable to all damage.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League – Rocksteady Doesn’t Refer to It as a Live Service, Tons of Free Content Planned

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is launching later this month (via early access), bringing a new chapter to Rocksteady’s Batman universe. Though it’s not exactly his universe anymore, but the game expands upon the Arkhamverse still, introducing the Justice League and a host of new characters. Still, many are cautious about the title, seeing that it’s online-focused, and yet, despite that, Rocksteady themselves apparently don’t view the game as a live service or games as a service (GaaS), describing it to be full of the DNA of the Batman games and their biggest story yet.

“We don’t really think of our game as fitting with any particular label,” Rocksteady’s studio product director, Darius Sadeghian, said in the latest issue of Play Magazine (Feb. 2024)

“It’s still full of the DNA that infuses the Batman: Arkham series – those foundations of story and character are absolutely central to our process…story-wise, this is easily our biggest game, but we’re also really keen on being there for players who want to stay with us and continue the adventure. It’s really important to us that we’re generous with the people who play our game, so for the first year after launch, we’ve got masses of new content that will be completely free for people who own the game,”

He goes on to list that they have new stories, missions, locations, gear, costumes, collectible trinkets, and more that are planned to be free, with new characters being free for all players. There are even hints of new features being worked on. One of those new features that we know is coming is offline play.

It seems that Rocksteady has a plethora of content already planned, though let us hope that the base game is as beefy as any of their previous Batman games.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League launches in February for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Deluxe Editions will be granted early access on January 30.

Hogwarts Legacy Sales Pass 22 Million Copies, Was the Top Selling Game of 2023

The success of Hogwarts Legacy continues to roll into 2024, as Warner Bros. and Avalanche Software have announced that Hogwarts Legacy’s sales have surpassed 22 million copies worldwide.

While it’s common for single-player games to lose sales after a while, especially one released at the very start of the year, the story for Hogwarts Legacy is different, as it has managed to pull strong numbers for almost an entire straight year. Just how strong? Well, enough to beat even the behemoth called Call of Duty as the 2023 best-selling video game. Yeah, that’s an accomplishment that many titles have been trying to topple over the last five years.

22 million copies were sold across all platforms, which is seven million more than what was last reported in May 2023. David Haddad, the President of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, spoke with Variety briefly on the game’s success, saying that not only is he happy about the game’s success, but they were able to make the fans happy too.

“But it’s not just the unit sold that I’m so proud of, it’s just that it delighted the fans so much. It brought Harry Potter to life in a new way for gamers where they could be themselves in this world, in this story. And that’s what the team at Avalanche set out to do when they were developing the game and I think that’s really why it resonated so well and remains the best-selling game of the year in the entire industry worldwide. That’s a position that typically is held by one of these incumbent’s sequel games and we’re so proud that we’ve been able to break into the top ranks.”

Next month will officially be the first anniversary of Hogwarts Legacy, and though Avalanche has yet to announce any DLC, expansions, or sequel plans, we do expect that we’ll get something special to celebrate the game’s anniversary.

Either way, what an absolute monster of a game to achieve such a feat. Despite the controversies and no recognition at The Game Awards last year, the game has managed to leave its mark on the industry. As I said in my Hogwarts Legacy review, “I’ve dreamt about an open-world Harry Potter game that has everything you’d expect out of a Harry Potter game, and Avalanche has finally delivered on that dream. The attention to detail that has gone into this game, the love and care, and the pure dedication of the team. It all goes unnoticed”

The big question is now, where does the series go from here?
