Hogwarts Legacy Sales Pass 22 Million Copies, Was the Top Selling Game of 2023

The success of Hogwarts Legacy continues to roll into 2024, as Warner Bros. and Avalanche Software have announced that Hogwarts Legacy’s sales have surpassed 22 million copies worldwide.

While it’s common for single-player games to lose sales after a while, especially one released at the very start of the year, the story for Hogwarts Legacy is different, as it has managed to pull strong numbers for almost an entire straight year. Just how strong? Well, enough to beat even the behemoth called Call of Duty as the 2023 best-selling video game. Yeah, that’s an accomplishment that many titles have been trying to topple over the last five years.

22 million copies were sold across all platforms, which is seven million more than what was last reported in May 2023. David Haddad, the President of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, spoke with Variety briefly on the game’s success, saying that not only is he happy about the game’s success, but they were able to make the fans happy too.

“But it’s not just the unit sold that I’m so proud of, it’s just that it delighted the fans so much. It brought Harry Potter to life in a new way for gamers where they could be themselves in this world, in this story. And that’s what the team at Avalanche set out to do when they were developing the game and I think that’s really why it resonated so well and remains the best-selling game of the year in the entire industry worldwide. That’s a position that typically is held by one of these incumbent’s sequel games and we’re so proud that we’ve been able to break into the top ranks.”

Next month will officially be the first anniversary of Hogwarts Legacy, and though Avalanche has yet to announce any DLC, expansions, or sequel plans, we do expect that we’ll get something special to celebrate the game’s anniversary.

Either way, what an absolute monster of a game to achieve such a feat. Despite the controversies and no recognition at The Game Awards last year, the game has managed to leave its mark on the industry. As I said in my Hogwarts Legacy review, “I’ve dreamt about an open-world Harry Potter game that has everything you’d expect out of a Harry Potter game, and Avalanche has finally delivered on that dream. The attention to detail that has gone into this game, the love and care, and the pure dedication of the team. It all goes unnoticed”

The big question is now, where does the series go from here?

Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition PC Will Feature DLSS 3 on Launch

As part of NVIDIA’s CES 2024 presentation, the company has just revealed that Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition will feature full DLSS 3 support when it launches on PC later this year. Additionally, the game will also feature NVIDIA’s other prominent tech such as DLAA and Reflex.

This announcement comes with a new trailer showcasing all of the NVIDIA functionality for the game:

Here’s some further details straight from the NVIDIA blog post released earlier today:

When Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition launches later this year, GeForce RTX gamers can activate DLSS 3 from day-one to multiply their performance, or those with fast enough frame rates can use DLAA to maximize their image quality. And to make gameplay even more responsive, players can enable Reflex to reduce system latency.

For those interested in the game, here’s what you can expect from the Complete Edition when it launches:

Join Aloy as she braves the distant lands of Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition, the critically-acclaimed sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn. Explore distant lands, fight bigger and more awe-inspiring machines, and encounter astonishing new tribes as you return to the far-future, post-apocalyptic world of Horizon.

The land is dying. Vicious storms and an unstoppable blight ravage the scattered remnants of humanity, while fearsome new machines prowl their borders. Life on Earth is hurtling towards another extinction, and no one knows why.

It’s up to Aloy to uncover the secrets behind these threats and restore order and balance to the world. Along the way, she must reunite with old friends, forge alliances with warring new factions and unravel the legacy of the ancient past – all the while trying to stay one step ahead of a seemingly undefeatable new enemy.

The Complete Edition also includes Burning Shores, the story expansion that picks up after the conclusion of the main game, along with bonus content.

It’ll be great to see this game in its best form with these new NVIDIA features on PC. Horizon Forbidden West is arguably the best-looking game on PS5, so seeing it reach its ultimate potential on PC should be a treat.

We currently have no release date for Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition. We’ll be sure to let our readers know as soon as we know more.

Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail Expansion Introduces Pictomancer Job and New Areas to Explore

At the Final Fantasy Fan Festival in Tokyo earlier this week, Square Enix shared some new details regarding the upcoming Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail Expansion. This new update will bring a new job to the game in the form of the Pictomancer, as well as add new areas, a flashy cyberpunk-esque city, and hours upon hours of content for players to grind through.

The presentation included with a full six-minute trailer for Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail, which you can watch below in all its glory:

While this trailer is purely cinematic, there’s still plenty to see here, so let’s break down all the details from today’s press release.

Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail Expansion Details

Meet the Pictomancer

final fantasy 14 dawntrail

Works in the medium of mixed aether, wielding a specialized brush to render their imaginings reality. These creations include not only creatures and weapons, but landscapes as well. As evoking such wonders takes time, the Pictomancer also keeps instant-cast abilities and spells at the ready.

A gameplay teaser for the new Pictomancer job can be seen below:

New Playable Race: Female Hrothgar

final fantasy 14 dawntrail

The Hrothgar people hail from Ilsabard. A Turali people with shared ancestry, The Xbr’aal, call Yak T’el home.Females number relatively few among the population, but are readily identified by their lithe, muscular forms. Equally distinctive is their predisposition for leadership.

New City: Solution Nine

final fantasy 14 dawntrail

A city of towering facades constructed by an entirely different civilization than that of Tuliyollal. This city is pretty different from anything we’ve seen before in Final Fantasy 14. It’s got a really unique futuristic aesthetic that we’re big fans of. It’s giving us classic Phantasy Star Online vibes.

You can watch a brief walkthrough of the city below:

New Area: Heritage Found

final fantasy 14 dawntrail

In this region overflowing with lightning energies, thick thunderclouds blot out the sun, while streaks of purple levin illuminate the land day and night. This dark and gloomy area adds to the already-diverse list of explorable locations in Final Fantasy 14 and contrasts much of the game’s bright and sunny plains with a gloomy and foreboding desert.

And much, much more!

On top of these major additions, there are a handful of other significant new features coming to Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail:

  • New Raid Series: The Arcadion
  • A New Ultimate Raid: Futures Rewritten (Ultimate)
  • New Dungeons
  • Expansive New Lifestyle Content: Cosmic Exploration
  • New Field Operations
  • A New Limited Job: Beastmaster

As always, these expansions bring plenty of content to the table to make sure you get your money’s worth, and Dawntrail is no exception. There’s all sorts of exciting stuff here to keep you roped into the game.

Graphics Update

final fantasy 14 dawntrail

Last but not least, the game will also be receiving its first graphical update alongside Dawntrail. This update will include improvements to the game’s screen-wide aesthetic appeal, higher resolution textures and shadows, and improved material qualities across the board.

All in all, Dawntrail’s shaping up to be yet another awesome expansion for Final Fantasy 14. While we don’t have an exact release date for it yet, it’s scheduled to arrive in Summer 2024. We’ll be sure to let our readers know as soon as we know more.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 DLSS 3 and Ray Tracing Arriving at Launch

Dragon’s Dogma 2 launches on March 22, and thanks to NVIDIA’s CES 2024 presentation this morning, we now know that the game will launch with full NVIDIA feature support. This includes features like DLSS 3 and Ray Tracing, ensuring the game will look great and play well on PC with supported NVIDIA cards.

A trailer for the game’s RTX features can be seen below:

This game looks really good, right? Here are the juicy details from NVIDIA’s own blog post regarding the game’s RTX features:

Dragon’s Dogma is Capcom’s single player, narrative driven action-RPG series that challenges the players to choose their own experience – from the appearance of their Arisen, their vocation, their party, how to approach different situations and more. Now, in this long-awaited sequel, the deep, explorable fantasy world of Dragon’s Dogma 2 awaits.

On your journey, you’ll be joined by Pawns, mysterious otherworldly beings, in an adventure so unique you will feel as if accompanied by other players while on your own adventure. All of these elements are elevated further through physics technology, artificial intelligence (AI) and the latest in graphics, to create a truly immersive fantasy world in Dragon’s Dogma 2.

At launch on March 22nd, GeForce RTX gamers will receive the definitive PC experience thanks to the day-one inclusion of NVIDIA DLSS 3, ray-traced reflections, and ray-traced lighting. For a first look at Dragon’s Dogma 2 enhanced with RTX, stay locked to GeForce.com in the approach to the game’s release.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a game that will benefit greatly from these graphical features. While it looks stunning, it does have that signature Capcom touch of traditional graphics that they can’t seem to step away from outside of games like Resident Evil and Devil May Cry. Nonetheless, the game still looks gorgeous. We’re excited to hop into it.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 launches on March 22 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Report: Metal Gear Solid Remake Is Still in the Works

Konami currently has a lot cooking for the Metal Gear franchise. After the recent release of the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1, fans might be itching for a full-fledged remake of the original games. If that’s you, good news: according to a recent report, a Metal Gear Solid remake is still under development at Konami.

This report comes by way of gaming news site Areajugones, who had previously leaked the God of War Valhalla DLC ahead of its reveal at The Game Awards. Today, their sources are telling them that Konami has a remake of the first Metal Gear Solid game in production.

As of right now, the project is reportedly in its first phases and has no release date. Given that the company is currently focused on Metal Gear Solid Delta, a remake of MGS3: Snake Eater, it’s likely we won’t see this project for a while. However, it’s not entirely out of the realm of possibility that this project is released in the next few years.

Many have theorized that Konami plans to release remakes of each of the mainline Metal Gear Solid games in chronological order. This would make sense, given that Metal Gear Solid is the next game timeline-wise. That is, if we skip MGS5: The Phantom Pain, which Konami likely won’t remake seeing as how it’s the most recent entry.

Additionally, the Metal Gear Solid Remake would reportedly skip PS4 and release only on PS5. The upcoming Snake Eater remake is doing the same, so this tracks. Sony has largely begun to leave the PS4 behind as more players join the PS5 generation daily.

This news should be taken with a big old bag full of salt, as always. These plans are by no means confirmed, and they’re subject to change at any moment even if the reports are accurate right now. We’ll be sure to let our readers know as soon as we hear more.

Nvidia RTX 4080 Super Pricing and Release Date Revealed

As promised, Nvidia has announced their newest line of 4000 series GPU cards, the RTX Super, promising more performance at a cheaper price. Here are the details, including release date and pricing, on the Nvidia RTX 4080 Super, 4070 Super, and 4070 Ti Super.

As part of their CES 2024 presentation, Nvidia has revealed new RTX Super GPUs for the 4000 Series line of cards. Here’s a breakdown of each card (via press release)

A 4K Monster: The GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER

The GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER powers fully ray-traced games in 4K resolution. At 1.4x faster than the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti without DLSS Frame Generation, the RTX 4080 SUPER delivers blistering performance with traditional rasterization. With 836 AI TOPS, DLSS Frame Generation delivers an extra performance boost, making the RTX 4080 SUPER twice as fast as the RTX 3080 Ti. The RTX 4080 SUPER features more cores and faster memory for a performance edge. It will be available starting Jan. 31 from $999.

Precision Gaming: The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER

The RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is the ideal GPU for maxing out games at super-high frame rates at 1440p, and up to 4K. Compared to the RTX 4070 Ti, it has more cores, an increased frame buffer to 16GB, and a 256-bit memory bus, providing a significant memory bandwidth increase to 672 GB/sec. It is 1.6x faster than a RTX 3070 Ti and 2.5x with DLSS 3. The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER will be available starting Jan. 24 at $799.

Perfectly Balanced: The GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER

The RTX 4070 SUPER arrives with 20% more cores than the RTX 4070, making it faster than an RTX 3090 at a fraction of the power. With DLSS 3, its lead stretches to 1.5x faster. It will be available starting Jan. 17 at $599.

Generally, these cards should offer more performance (2-5%) than their non-Super counterparts while also being cheaper. The RTX 4080 Super MSRP at $999, while the standard RTX 4080 retails at $1199, making it $200 cheaper with better performance.

They may still be expensive cards, but the price drop is a step in the right direction, offering a better price to performance than what early adopters originally got.

The price of the 4080 Super also puts it within the cost of AMD’s 7900 XTX, their high-end GPU that was in line with the original RTX 4080. Whether AMD plans on addressing that with a new card of their own or a price drop will remain to be seen, though we expect some form of reaction to remain competitive.

If you already own either an RTX 4070 or RTX 4080 and were wondering if the Super models would be worth the upgrade, likely not. Yes, they provide better performance than their base models, and despite not having any benchmarks to compare, it should be clear that the uplift in performance will be minimal, not making it worth the upgrade. You’d be better off waiting for the RTX 5000 cards, which are speculated to launch next year.

All three Super cards will be available for purchase starting January 31.

Steam Breaks Its Own Record for Concurrent Users, Reaches Over 33 Million

The new year has barely just begun, and we’re already seeing some records being broken, as Valve’s storefront, Steam, has managed to pull over 33 million users online at once, with over 10 million playing games.

According to the latest info tracked on Steam Database, a whopping 33,675,229 users logged into Steam on January 7, breaking the all-time high for concurrent users on Steam. The previous record was 33,598,520, which was achieved in January of 2023.

On average, over 33 million users log into Steam daily, a trend that has continued throughout the year. So, while Steam sees close to these numbers on a daily basis, it has taken a full year for it to break its record. That record was broken by roughly an additionaly 80,000 users this weekend.

Additionally, as pointed out on Resetera, about 10 million of those 33,675,229 users were in-game playing something, while the rest were logged into the app, be that on PC, Steam Deck, or even the mobile app.

The top performers for games this month are as follows:

  • Counter-Strike 2
  • Dota 2
  • PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS
  • Grand Theft Auto V
  • Baldur’s Gate 3
  • Apex Legends
  • Source SDK Base 2007
  • Rust
  • NARAKA: BLADEPOINT
  • Monster Hunter: World
  • Wallpaper Engine
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Lethal Company
  • Call of Duty®
  • War Thunder

Counter-Strike 2 saw over one million players logged in during the weekend, while DOTA 2 numbers came in just under 700K.

These are all impressive numbers.

It helps that Steam recently held a Winter Sale, which had thousands of titles offered at a discount price. While it ended last week, many, including some of us at MP1st, are just getting back from the Holiday to enjoy some of those titles.

Either way, congrats to Valve on the record! We expect to see this record broken even more in the coming years as the PC market continues to expand and grow, making it easier for many to get into.

Dead by Daylight January 2024 PTB Update Introduces Major Changes

Behaviour Interactive is wasting no time in the new year, as they’ve revealed a massive new Dead by Daylight public test build update, which is going live tomorrow on PC.

The new update, which you can read below, is bringing several major changes to Dead by Daylight, from new features like the FoV Slider, to gameplay changes and balancing to several killers and perks. Lots to expect from this Public Test Build update, which will be playable for PC players starting tomorrow.

Dead by Daylight January Update – Public Test Build Patch Notes

Generators

Kicking things off (no pun intended), we have a few updates to Generators. More specifically, these changes target how Generators are damaged by the Killer and how their regression can be stopped by Survivors. The goal with this update is to bring an end to excessively long matches (3 gen scenarios in particular) and at the same time improve the Killer’s ability to damage Generators. (3 gen scenarios are those where the killer aims to defend 3 generators that are close by in particular, and does not participate in normal gameplay – not chasing survivors etc, in this instance survivors are not able to make any meaningful progress to those generators)

Going forward, each Generator can only suffer from a maximum of 8 ‘regression events’ – where a regression event is any time the Killer or their Perks removes at least 2.5% of the Generator’s progress in an instant. An indicator will show the Killer if a Generator can no longer be damaged. In the overwhelming majority of games, this will not come into play. However, in scenarios where the Killer is defending a set of Generators and refusing to chase Survivors, there will eventually come a point where they can no longer damage the Generator, helping bring an end to excessively long matches.

At the same time, we want to address a point of frustration for Killers as well: Survivors working on a generator briefly to stop it from regressing, or “Gen tapping” for short. Given that the number of regression events is now limited, stopping a Generator from regressing is more meaningful than ever. To prevent Survivors from tapping a Generator to negate one of those regression events, we have made two changes:

  • The base damage from kicking a Generator has been increased to 5% (was 2.5%).
  • At least 5% of the Generator’s total charges must be repaired to stop regression, otherwise it will begin regressing again when the Survivor stops repairing.

This will help ensure that the Killer always gets some value from kicking a Generator and encourage Survivors to think twice before attempting to stop the regression.

FOV Slider

Is Shadowborn permanently locked into one of your Perk slots? Well, that’s about to change thanks to the new first-person field of view (FOV) slider. Starting with this update, Killers in first person will be able to adjust their FOV to something they’re more comfortable with, ranging from 87 degrees (the current default) to 103 degrees (the current maximum with Shadowborn).

Perks which alter your FOV (Shadowborn and Monitor & Abuse) will need to be adjusted. We’ll cover exactly how those Perks are changing later in this post.

Bear in mind this option only applies to first person field of view and therefore will not affect Survivors. Since Survivors play the game from the third person perspective, a wider FOV would add to an already advantageous camera view.

Initially this feature will be accessible through the Beta Tab in game.

The Onryo

A few months ago, we released a major update to The Onryo. Though some players were pleased with the changes, many longtime Onryo mains felt that her gameplay had changed too much from the Killer they once loved. In this update, we want to revisit Sadako once more to find a middle ground which better appeals to all her players, old and new.

Condemned

In the last update, Condemned would spread to all Survivors who were not holding a tape whenever Sadako projected to a TV. This allowed her to spread her curse more often, but many felt that this favoured teleporting as soon as possible rather than strategically during a chase. We have a few changes in mind to restore this gameplay while keeping Condemned more prominent:

  • When The Onryo teleports, Survivors within 16m of a powered TV will receive a stack of Condemned.
  • The teleport cooldown has been removed, allowing her to teleport more frequently.
  • When a Survivor is hooked, their current Condemned progress becomes locked in, preventing it from being removed.

This will make it very risky for Survivors to ignore Sadako’s curse. Survivors will want to shut off nearby TVs and deposit their tapes before it’s too late. Speaking of tapes…

Cursed Tapes

We’ve also reviewed the way Cursed Tapes work to bring back some of their fondly remembered behaviour.

  • Cursed Tapes no longer protect Survivors from gaining Condemned.
  • Cursed Tapes are no longer destroyed or inflict Condemned when a Survivor is hit.
  • Cursed Tapes can only be deposited in the further TV from where they were picked up.

This will once again force the Survivors to spend some time crossing the map in order to delay the curse.

Demanifested

The previous update made it so The Onryo couldn’t start a chase while Demanifested. This had a side effect of making it very obvious when she Demanifested in the middle of a chase, allowing Survivors to anticipate and play around it.

  • The Onryo can now chase Survivors while Demanifested.

Additionally, many pointed out that one of The Onryo’s changed Add-Ons, Reiko’s Watch, was very fun to use. Rather than add the effect back into the Add-On, we instead incorporated it into her base kit to make the Add-On feel less essential.

  • The duration of invisibility while Demanifested has been increased to 1.2 seconds (was 1 second).

Add-Ons

With all these changes in mind, we’ve reviewed a handful of The Onryo’s Add-Ons which either no longer have a purpose or promoted strongly disliked playstyles.

The Hillbilly

Uh oh, watch out Survivors, it looks like someone unwrapped a brand new chainsaw. It’s The Hillbilly’s turn for an update!

Overdrive

The controversial Overheat mechanic is no more; Overdrive is the new talk of the town. As The Hillbilly uses his chainsaw, it will generate heat just like before. When the heat meter is full, not only will he continue being able to use it, but his chainsaw will kick into Overdrive and gain the following effects for the next 20 seconds:

  • Chainsaw charge speed is increased by 5%.
  • His Chainsaw Sprint movement speed increases to 13m/s.
  • Chainsaw Sprint cooldowns are reduced by 10%.

The short version? Heat is good now.

Cleaning Up

At the same time, we’ve made some general improvements to The Hillbilly’s kit and smoothed out some of the rougher edges.

  • The base Chainsaw Sprint movement speed has been increased by 10%.
  • Reduced the size of the Chainsaw’s collision detection to make Chainsaw Sprints more maneuverable in maps with high density tiles
  • Camera sensitivity is no longer incorrectly tied to the controller sensitivity setting while using a mouse & keyboard. (Chainsaw controls are now equal to 100% sensitivity before.)

Add-Ons

Last but certainly not least, we have done a pass on The Hillbilly’s Add-Ons with these changes in mind. This blogpost is long enough as is, so keep an eye on the patch notes when the Public Test Build (PTB) goes live for more details!

The Blight’s Add-Ons

Next up, we have changes in store for a handful of The Blight’s Add-Ons.

Blighted Rat & Blighted Crow

These Add-Ons are fairly strong, making it far more difficult to get out of the way of his Rush in time. We have reduced the Rush speed bonus of these Add-Ons to 2% and 3% respectively (was 4% and 6%).

Adrenaline Vial

This Add-On has a lot going on, making it jack-of-all-trades. To simply it and bring it closer in line with other options, we are removing the following effects:

  • No longer decreases time to recharge a Rush token by 1 second.
  • No longer increases Rush speed by 10%.

The Add-On now does the following (these effects are unchanged):

  • Increases maximum Rush tokens by 2.
  • Increases maximum Rush look angle by 20 degrees.
  • Decreases Rush turn rate by 55%.

Alchemist’s Ring

(The one you probably aren’t surprised to see on this list.) Restoring Rush tokens on hit is incredibly powerful, so we’ve reworked this Add-On entirely.

  • Increases Rush duration by 20% for each consecutive Rush.

Compound Thirty-Three

Reducing the Survivor’s movement speed acts very similarly to increasing The Blight’s Rush speed. We’ve decided the best course of action is to give this Add-On a new effect:

  • Each consecutive Rush which is longer than 4 meters increases turn rate by 33%.

Iridescent Blight Tag

This Add-On can also be extremely powerful in the right hands. It also promotes the awkward gameplay of repeatedly slamming into a wall to take advantage of the effects of the last Rush. We’ve given this Add-On a brand-new effect as well:

  • Enables Rush to be performed without spending tokens.
  • Rush bonuses are capped after 3 consecutive rushes.
  • Blighted Corruption goes on cooldown for 20 seconds after a successful Lethal Rush attack.

Perk Updates

Next up, we’ve got a bunch of Perk updates to share!

Save the Best for Last

This Perk indirectly became stronger when the successful basic attack cooldown was reduced some time ago. Certain Killers can also circumvent the downside by using their special attack to injure the Obsession. To tone it down and make it more consistent across all Killers, we have made the following changes:

  • Each Token grants a stackable 4% decreased successful basic attack cooldown (was 5%).
  • 2 tokens are lost when the Obsession loses a health state by any means (was basic attacks).

Grim Embrace

Grim Embrace blocks Generators for a substantial duration. However, it only activates once and requires the Killer to hook every Survivor once, it can be a little inconsistent and hard to activate. Therefore, we’re adding a secondary effect on top of the existing effect:

  • The first time a Survivor is hooked, all generators are blocked for 8/10/12 seconds once the Killer moves at least 16 meters from the hook.

This will ensure the Killer is always able to get some value out of their Perk even if the last elusive Survivor manages to evade them and reward Killers who switch targets.

Quick Gambit

This Perk grants other Survivors a repair speed boost when you are being chased nearby. However, its range is fairly low, making it difficult to get close enough for other Survivors to benefit from without also putting them in danger.

  • We have increased the range to 36 meters (was 24 meters).
  • We have reduced the repair speed bonus to 3/4/5% (was 6/7/8%).

Hex: Ruin

We toned this Perk down in a previous update. In retrospect, since the Perk could already be disabled by being cleansed, the added activation condition did not feel necessary.

  • Hex: Ruin is no longer disabled once a Survivor is killed or sacrificed.

Shadowborn

With the new FOV slider being introduced, Shadowborn is now obsolete and needs a new effect.

  • When blinded by any means, gain a 6/8/10% Haste effect for 10 seconds.

Monitor & Abuse

Likewise, the FOV altering effects of Monitor & Abuse are now unnecessary considering the added FOV slider. Monitor & Abuse allows for some interesting niche playstyles as is, so we have simply removed the FOV adjustments from this Perk and left the Terror Radius effects unchanged.

Ormond Gameplay Update

The newly renovated Mount Ormond Resort is open for the season! This update consists of layout changes to the front & back of the lodge, as well as miscellaneous loop adjustments.

The front of the lodge currently has a long row of rocks stretching across it. This can get in the way and make it difficult to traverse the map. Additionally, there’s no room in this portion of the map for any windows or pallets, essentially making it a big dead zone. We’ve given this portion of the map an overhaul to create more interesting gameplay.

The back of the lodge, meanwhile, is comprised of mostly picnic tables. Great for enjoying a meal in the freezing cold, but not very impactful when it comes to gameplay. Pallet loops around these tables are fairly short, making them incredibly unsafe. We have similarly adjusted this area to improve gameplay.

Game Modifiers

Whilst these will not be in the upcoming PTB, our first limited time modifier Dead by Daylight – Lights Out, will be available to play in the coming months. Stay tuned for more information.

Whew, what a way to start off the New Year! As always, this test is conducted on PC first, with it eventually released fully to everyone, including console owners. We’ll have a full list of changes once that patch is ready, so keep an eye on our hub page for Dead by Daylight.

Report: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Possible DLC Detailing Enemies, Missions and More Surfaces

Could Insomniac Games be working on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 DLC? While nothing has been announced, a bunch of data alluding to it has recently surfaced, which lists not only a new costume, but a new enemy and missions as well.

(Spoiler Warning: If you don’t want anything for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 spoiled, which includes possible future announcements, don’t read further).

This was spotted by Twitter user Visceral, with lines of code from the game seemingly confirming that a “Beetle” section of the game is in the data, and this points to Tombstone’s daughter Janice Lincoln or also known as Lady Beetle. There are even missions listed alongside XP for complete missions, and even new enemy types!

Spider-Man 2 BEETLE DLC – Reveal, possible Missions and new Enemys

Of course, same as with any unconfirmed info, this could be leftover code from a previous build that didn’t make the cut or something else entirely. That said, most of the leftover stuff from most games do come to fruition, and given the game’s amazing sales, I wouldn’t be shocked to see a DLC be released. I mean, based on the recent Insomniac Games hack, Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 is set to be released in 2028, which is quite far off.

While no DLC has been confirmed just yet, Insomniac Games does have the New Game+ and mission replay features slated to swing out in “early 2024.”

XDefiant Won’t Feature SBMM in Normal Playlists, Prestige System Being Designed Currently

Are you dreading skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) online multiplayer shooters? If so, XDefiant might just be the solution for your woes, as the devs have confirmed that XDefiant will not feature SBMM in “normal” playlists.

This was revealed by Executive Producer Mark Rubin over on Twitter/X where it’s confirmed that newbie players will have SBMM in their own “Welcome Playlist,” and in Ranked mode, it will feature ranked-based matchmaking (which is perfectly logical). But for those playing casually, your standard playlist won’t feature SBMM!

In case you can’t see the tweet reply, Rubin states:

  • No SBMM in normal playlists.
  • Ubisoft will have a Welcome Playlist for players under level 25 that will have SBMM but all of the other playlists won’t have SBMM.
  • Ranked will have ranked-based matchmaking

The good thing about this Welcome Playist is, it’s entirely optional according to Rubin.

In addition to SBMM, Rubin also confirmed that they are still designing the game’s Prestige system. While they do it to be similar to Call of Duty, they are also looking at having yearly prestiges given XDefiant won’t be seeing annual releases, and they are targeting to support the game for years.

While Rubin originally mentioned how new playtests are planned (including console players this time), it seems that’s not set in stone yet, as the developer states they are looking into it and will let players know once they have more concrete to share.

Of course, given Rubin mentioned how we should be expecting XDefiant news in the coming weeks, it does sound like they are prepping the game for release soon. I honestly wouldn’t be shocked to hear a release date announcement within the month alongside a new playtest session (sort of like a final testing phase bit on all platforms before launhing). Once we know more, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.

XDefiant is set to launch soon on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with the PS4 and Xbox One versions set to be released at a later time.

Portal Revolution Is a Fan-Made Prequel to Portal 2 That’s Available Right Now

While Valve seems to have left the idea of a new Portal game in its vault of titles (don’t expect Portal 3 anytime soon), one indie studio named Second Face Software has taken it upon themselves to create a prequel to Portal 2 titled “Portal Revolution.”

There are over 40 new puzzles to tinker over in this fan-made mode, and did we mention it’s available right now? Yep, it is, and so far, it’s been getting a ton of positive reviews on Steam, too!

Would-be players can download it on Steam and we’ve also included the official description of it as well, where it mentions players can expect 5-7 hours of playtime from it.

ABOUT THIS GAME
Portal: Revolution is a fan-made mod for Portal 2 which plays before the events of Portal 2 in the dead and decaying Aperture facility.

Over 40 new puzzles
The campaign contains 40 brand new puzzles making use of new test elements and presents existing mechanics in a new way not seen in Portal 2.

  • Resurrected “Pneumatic Diversity Vent” element
  • New laser cube variant
  • Over 15 puzzles using only the blue Portal-Gun
  • Gel Cleansing Field

Difficulty

Portal: Revolutions puzzle difficulty starts where Portal 2 stops, but fear not. All new mechanics and advanced portal tricks are taught to you. We have ensured through rigorous playtesting that every player can solve the puzzles. Although very few chambers require portals to be fired mid-air, no puzzles require advanced tricky movement.

Depending on your experience with Portal 2 mechanics, you can expect about 5 to 7 hours of playtime.

Story

Set inbetween Portal and Portal 2, Portal: Revolution tells a brand new story using new characters. You play as a test subject who is awoken by a personality sphere called Stirling and join his mission to find a powerful device capable of restoring Aperture to its former glory.

ENGINE

Portal: Revolution uses a modified version of Portal 2: Community Edition’s engine, which is a custom version of the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Source Engine branch using licensed source code provided by Valve Software.

This allowed us to introduce many mechanics and improvements to the engine to create an experience which would be impossible in Portal 2.

Chances are, this is the closest we’re going to get when it comes to a new Portal game. But who knows, though, perhaps Valve might surprise gamers by announcing Portal 3 this year.

Rumor: Highly Acclaimed First-Party Xbox Exclusive That Released in 2023 Going Multiplat This Year

A new rumor suggests that a highly acclaimed Xbox first-party exclusive that was in discussion for Game of the Year is going multiplatform later this year.

The rumor comes from the latest Nate the Hate Podcast, where Nate claims that an Xbox first-party console exclusive will be coming to another console this year.

The title I am referring to was met with high critical acclaim, fans loved it, and it was in the GOTY conversation the year it released. When the announcement comes, I think it’s going to be met with a lot of excitement because this is a quality game.” Nate said on the podcast episode. He continues, “Yes, Microsoft will be dabbling in bringing a 1st party game to a competitor platform in 2024. At least one game, I know of one, don’t know if there will be additional.”

Nate doesn’t specify which game he’s referring to, and though Xbox released plenty of first-party console exclusives last year, there is one that does come to mind for many, that being Tango Gamework’s Hi-Fi Rush. It was a title that shadow-dropped out of nowhere last year, with both fans and critics talking highly of it.

Many speculate this is the title Nate is referring to, and the platform it’ll be coming over to will be the Nintendo Switch, given the history and relation Microsoft has with the console maker.

Of course, there’s also Forza Motorsport and Starfield, though if it’s one of those two, we say Starfield is more likely. Despite its mixed reviews, Starfield is a title that did receive a good amount of praise from players and some critics, with some even calling it their Game of the Year. Phil Spencer spoke to Bloomberg in 2020, saying that Bethesda’s games and the platform they would show on would be decided on a “case-by-case” basis. Could we be seeing the title come to PlayStation?

We say unlikely, though we’ve been wrong before. Our bet is on Hi-Fi Rush, as it does seem like a small enough title that may benefit more from going multiplat.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see! What title do you think it is?

The Pokémon Company and Sony Announce Support for Noto Peninsula Earthquake Relief Efforts

On New Year’s Day, Japan was hit with a 7.6 magnitude earthquake, killing over 100 people and trapping hundreds in isolations as buildings and roads collapsed. It also left tens of thousands without power. Japan’s Self-Defense forces were quickly dispatched to aid those affected, with the country planning on spending over 4.74 billion yen ($34 million USD) to aid victims. The Pokémon Company, and Sony have also joined in on the relief, with donations totaling over 90 million yen (622,256 USD) to help victims with continued support through their Pokémon With You Foundation.

This announcement comes via X, where the official Pokémon Company announced their plans for aid.

“[About support for areas affected by the 2020 Noto Peninsula Earthquake]

We would like to express our deepest sympathies to those affected by the 2020 Noto Peninsula Earthquake that occurred on January 1, 2024.

The Pokémon Company has decided to donate 50 million yen to the Japanese Red Cross Society and donations to support organizations in order to help those affected by the disaster and to help restore the affected areas.

Additionally, through the Pokémon With You Foundation, we will continue to carry out activities to help children affected by the disaster regain their smiles. We sincerely pray for the earliest possible recovery and reconstruction of the disaster-stricken areas.  Pokemon With You Foundation”

Sony also made the announcement that they too will be donating over 40 million yen.

“Sony Group Corporation (“Sony”) extends its deepest sympathies to all those affected by the earthquake that struck the Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa Prefecture in Japan on January 1, 2024. Sony will donate a total of 40 million yen as emergency aid to support relief efforts for the communities affected.

Of this total, Sony will donate 15 million yen and Sony Life Insurance Co., Ltd. will donate 10 million yen to the Japanese Red Cross Society. Another 15 million yen will be donated from the “Emergency Disaster and Recovery Fund for Children (*1),” jointly operated by Sony and Save the Children Japan, and be used by Save the Children (*2) for its support activities. In addition, Sony will also collect donations from employees at Sony Group companies and match the amounts raised. Going forward, Sony will consider additional support as needed based on the status of the damage and requests for assistance from the affected regions.

Sony sends its sincerest condolences to all those affected and wishes for a full and swift recovery.”

The 7.6 magnitude earthquake, which struck Japan on January 1, saw many towns destroyed, with tsunami warnings issued. The BBC reports that the town of Wajima, which has a population of 23,000, has now become a desolated ghost town as the locals evacuate.

Our hearts and prayers go out to all those affected.

What Does the Biggest Gaming Buyout in History Between Microsoft and Activision Mean for MS

It all started of as nothing more than rumblings and rumors. The idea of Microsoft acquiring one of the most well-known and influential companies in gaming seemed too monumental to contemplate. As time went on though, more and more smaller studios began to get snatched up by both Sony and Microsoft. The purchases made by these companies were fueling each others infinitely deep pockets in a competition to hold the most stacked hand of industry talent.

After years of decisions and delegation with boards from all around the world slowly giving their approval, Microsoft was given the green light to make the biggest buyout in gaming history. They now own Activision-Blizzard, but unsurprisingly, it has come at a tremendously hefty cost of $68.7 billion. At a glance, it seems to be a sure-fire way to bolster your company to the top of the gaming industry and stay competitive. However, upon further investigation, it appears there is much larger ramifications for this deal than previously thought. Not just for Nintendo and Sony, but Microsoft too.

ftc microsoft

Xbox Just got a Major Boost to Every Facet of Their Gaming Business Model

It should be obvious that this deal is going to change the Xbox ecosystem for the better. It has always been a good time to be an Xbox fan, but it’s about to be a great time. Xbox’s unique offerings that it provides to gamers with game pass and backwards compatibility combined with the expansive Activision-Blizzard library is sure to be a recipe for success. It is also undoubtably a large factor that Microsoft took into consideration when making the decision to lay down this much cash. So much of Xbox’s success has been associated with their game pass subscription model and an infusion of all legacy and new Activision-Blizzard titles coming to their platform is extremely attractive to their customers.

Microsoft has managed to completely overcome their biggest issue in the eyes of gamers as well with their well documented lack of exclusives. Compared to Sony and Nintendo, Microsoft’s offerings in terms of first-party games have been severely inadequate. To put it into perspective, Microsoft hasn’t had a single first-party game even be nominated for game of the year in 10 years. This unholy dry spell can quickly be scoffed at with the induction of Activision-Blizzard and their consistently highly rated titles. Microsoft has certainly been playing catch-up, buying up smaller studios like Ninja Theory and Obsidian Entertainment. Unfortunately they haven’t had the luxury of being able to wait for their internal studios to produce so they can keep up with the output of quality titles that Sony and Nintendo have been providing their players. Exclusively offering all Activision-Blizzard content to Game Pass subscribers will be a huge win for them and their players.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Campaign Rewards

Activision-Blizzard gives them franchises to work with that are already solidified and proven in the eyes of audiences. Of course, which of these titles are going to be truly exclusive still remain somewhat a mystery. Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, has pointed to keeping some titles multi-platform for the time being. However, that may not always be the case. A company doesn’t spend this much money lightly and they are sure to provide their own customers with perks and bonuses of being faithful in their own ecosystem. Not to mention they will be looking into ways to recuperate the massive price of the acquisition as well for the future moving forward. I wouldn’t expect Microsoft to be putting Game Pass on any platform that isn’t their own though. Phil Spencer has come right out and crushed any hopes of playing an Xbox title with Game Pass on Sony or Nintendo in the near future.

The Cost of Doing Business

While there are many positives that will come from this deal being executed, there are also some considerable caveats. The most apparent, aside from the actual money spent, is the cost paid through their exposure while trying to ensure that this deal would go through. Microsoft experienced what can be argued as the largest high-level leak ever seen in the gaming industry. They had their hardware plans, confidential emails, and a multitude of internal business plans unceremoniously exposed for everyone to see. While Phil definitely attempted to backpedal afterwards, the damage had already been done.

Xbox Series X Refresh

When you are in direct competition with other companies for limited market share in the gaming space, having something like this happen can be a huge blow to morale and you lose the advantage of surprise. One such interesting piece was that Xbox has considered completely dropping out of the gaming space if they are unable to meet certain targets by the end of this generation in 2027. For the time being though, Microsoft is staying, and they are now forced to operate with a lot of transparency.

Microsoft has already agreed to allow future Call of Duty titles to come out on PlayStation. How long that is going to last is another question though. The Call of Duty franchise has unbelievable staying power. Regardless of reviews or swings in quality year over year it is consistently in the top 10 best selling games each and every year. This isn’t even taking into consideration the massive number of other titles under the Activision-Blizzard umbrella. Microsoft would be shooting themselves in the foot not to make some of the other series exclusive to their platform going forward to further solidify their place in the market. PlayStation has used exclusivity against Xbox for years, there is no reason they won’t do the same.

Call of Duty Parity 100% PlayStation Xbox Nintendo

Where Do They Go From Here?

Xbox is in an incredibly unique position where they can control the subscription based market to their hearts desire. They have the best offerings and more content than anyone else by a mile. We could very well see Xbox take a page out of Netflix’s book. Continuously increasing prices while cornering the market as they have already been doing. Game pass, as it stands, is arguably the best deal in gaming and no other company has the ability to compete with them currently. That doesn’t mean their competitors haven’t taken notice though. Sony has been snatching up studios just as Microsoft has which is just going to create more consolidation in the market, and consolidation is never a good thing.

Regardless how you feel about the acquisition, it is hard to say that buying your way back into competition doesn’t create issues. Xbox has been sitting at the bottom in the console space for some time and this is sure to change things up. It also promotes other companies to do the same. This very well may be why we have seen so many studios get acquired recently as to prevent them from going to the competition first.

sony bungie

As it stands right now, there seems to be a major push for live service titles in the industry. That is where you can stand to make the most money off a product if it sees success. Sony is just beginning their push for this and has already had troubles transitioning some of their studios to an online model. Microsoft now owns some of the largest live service IP’s like World of Warcraft, Diablo, and CoD. This has created a huge paradigm shift where Xbox now has a major advantage in the industry through buying power alone. Nintendo on the other hand seems to be more than happy to continue doing their own thing because they have cemented their own family friendly niche into the gaming space that neither companies care to seriously challenge them to.

I don’t think it is unrealistic to say that no one could have predicted a world where Sony owns Bungie, the studio that created the Halo franchise, while Microsoft holds the rights to every Call of Duty title. It is highly doubtful Microsoft will make any changes to the creatives behind their newly acquired IP’s as they wouldn’t want to mess with a formula that has, for the most part, been working. This massive deal will have impacts on the industry for years to come and will be interesting to watch how it unfolds. Microsoft may be taking a break from their acquisition spree as this deal has surely made a large dent in their budget. They will need to see some of the fruits of their labor and no doubt have already been cooking up ways to maximize their profits and recoup their losses from our wallets.

Monster Hunter Wilds News Arriving This Summer; MH World and Rise Sales Update

Though Monster Hunter Wilds may not be due for at least another year, Capcom has promised that we’ll hear more news about it later this Summer.

As confirmed in their New Year’s Message for 2024, expect more news about Monster Hunter Wilds to drop this Summer.

Monster Hunter Wilds Summer 2024 Teaser

Considering that Summer Game Fest takes place then, we expect to see the update there.

This isn’t the only Monster Hunter-related news Capcom revealed either, as they’ve also announced new sales updates for both Monster Hunter World and Monster Hunter Rise. Monster Hunter World has achieved 10 million copies sold worldwide since its release in 2018, while Monster Hunter Rise has reached 13 million since its launch in 2021 on the Nintendo Switch and 2023 on PlayStation, PC, and Xbox. Monster Hunter Now, a free-to-play mobile game by Niantic (developers of Pokemon Go), has also achieved 10 million downloads since its 2023 September launch.

Not bad at all, and we expect those numbers to continue growing, leading to the launch of Monster Hunter Wilds.

Monster Hunter Wilds is currently targeting a 2025 release and will be released on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

In celebration of the new season, Ambessa Medarda who was first seen in Season 1 will be coming to the Rift (alongside the aforementioned Arcane champion VGU) later this year. Additionally, Arcane-inspired gameplay, an in-game update to a beloved champion in the show, and new skins will also be released in League of Legends at the same time. In the meantime, a preview of the new season can be viewed on YouTube.

  • The team is working through Lee Sin’s skin catalog now and his art and sustainability update (ASU) will be available to players in early May.
  • Teemo’s ASU is taking the team longer than intended and will have an updated timeline to be shared later this year.

Systems in 2024

The team will focus on making improvements to how the Ranked system evaluates player skill, reducing situations where a player is matched up with someone in a vastly different rank, and how much LP a player loses LP in relation to how much they gain in the new season. Additionally, there will be changes coming to the Champion Mastery system in the first half of the year.

Vanguard is coming to League as a response to the feedback around high number of bots in games, disruptive smurfs in Ranked, and an increase in scripting. The implementation will allow for live match termination and will refund LP to players in games with/against detected cheaters and bots.

Modes in 2024

  • Arena will be coming back in the first half of the year with more improvements:
    • The number of teams in a game of Arena will increase from four teams of two, to eight (for a total of 16 players)
    • Changes to the UI will be made accordingly and there will be new Augments, maps, and other improvements.
  • URF will be coming back for Lunar Revel in patch 14.3 and 14.4, and One-For-All after that.
  • A new game mode coming later this year will be a different take on core League gameplay and will be a more relaxed way to spend time with friends.

LoL Esports in 2024

LoL Esports will continue to increase the stakes around MSI and strengthen its connection to Worlds. To that effect, in 2024, the winning team at MSI will be awarded a guaranteed spot at Worlds, which also counts as an additional slot for their region. The second best performing region will secure an additional seed for their region as well.

This season, there will be a base of three Worlds slots for the LEC, LCS, LCK, and LPL. The PCS and VCS will each retain two Worlds slots, and the LLA and CBLOL will each retain one Worlds slot.

And as previously announced, MSI 2024 will be held May 1-19, 2024 in Chengdu, China. Worlds 2024 will be held September 25 to November 2, 2024 and take place in Berlin for Play-Ins and Swiss Stages at the Riot Games Arena, Paris for Quarterfinals and Semifinals at the Adidas Arena, and London at the O2 Arena for Finals.

Finally, to celebrate those who have made a lasting impact on the game, the sport, and the community, LoL Esports is proud to introduce the LoL Esports Hall of Legends, League’s version of a Hall of Fame. An independent voting panel of esports industry veterans and experts from every region will vote to select the very first inductee. Those inducted will be celebrated both in- and out-of-game. More details will be shared at a later date.

NEW CHAMPION: Smolder

After Noxion beastmasters led several expeditions to the fallen kingdom of Camavor in search of imperial dragons, they finally discovered and stole a hatchling. Despite the hatchling’s mother setting the ship ablaze to save him, he was lost in the chaos. Washing ashore to the craggy islands south of the capital, the hatchling was found by a young boy who named him Smolder.

“My name’s ‘Ignacarious Gigantareno Rex Le Spes Offerentis,’ but my human friend named me Smolder!”

One day while playing around, Smolder started a fire that burned through an entire forest. Upon seeing the smoke, Smolder’s mother descended on the island, finally reuniting with her son. Now under the watchful eyes of his mother, Smolder is learning what it means to be heir to the Camavoran imperial dragon lineage. Playful and keen to grow up, he is eager for any excuse to practice his burgeoning abilities. Though still a fledgling, Smolder’s skills are nothing to sneeze at, setting fire to anything that burns.

Smolder’s Abilities

  • Passive – Dragon Practice: Hitting champions with Abilities and killing enemies with Super Scorcher Breath grants Smolder a stack of Dragon Practice. Stacks increase the damage of Smolder’s basic Abilities.
  • Q – Super Scorcher Breath: Smolder belches flame at his enemies. This Ability evolves with stacks gaining the following:
    • 25: Damages all enemies surrounding the target.
    • 125: Sends explosions behind the target that deal 75% of this spell’s damage.
    • 225: Burns the target dealing max Health true damage over 3 seconds. Enemy champions that drop below a total health threshold while burning are killed instantly.
  • W – Achooo!: Smolder lets out an adorable flaming sneeze, damaging and slowing enemies hit. Hitting champions causes an additional explosion.
  • E – Flap, Flap, Flap: Smolder takes flight, gaining Move Speed and ignoring terrain for 1.25 seconds. While flying, Smolder attacks the lowest health enemy.
  • R – MMOOOMMMM!: Smolder’s mom breathes fire from above, dealing extra damage and slowing enemies in the center of her fire. Smolder’s mom also heals her son if she hits him.

Looks like the team at Riot’s got a lot planned for this year. We’ll be sure to keep readers posted as each new update hits League.

Netflix Considering Featuring Ads Play In-Games While Playing

Imagine, for a second, playing a game and having an ad potentially interrupt you. A ridiculous and horrible idea, one that Netflix is apparently considering.

In case you didn’t know, Netflix is now in the gaming market, offering free games to all subscribers. Granted, they’re mostly mobile games, but the service has seen some major titles, such as TNMT: Shredder’s Revenge, Dead Cells, and, more recently, the GTA Trilogy. It’s a nice additional perk for subscribers that has seen millions of downloads from users in 2023.

So, understandably, Netflix is looking for ways to bump up revenue. One is in-game purchases, a practice already common in the gaming industry, while the other is ads that play in-game. This is according to sources from the Wall Street Journal, where options are being discussed internally at Netflix.

Netflix Co-Chief Executive Greg Peters told investors back in April 2023 that they wanted to differentiate their gaming experience without the worry of ads or in-game payments, though based on WSJ, the company is changing its stance on that.

We aren’t surprised if this is true, as the company has been looking for ways to earn more due to the cost of operation. Netflix launched an ad-tier plan in November 2022, which has since seen over 15 million subscribers. From their perspective, the data may show that many don’t care about ads.

However, there is a huge difference between a show/movie and a video game, as one is interactive while the other isn’t. We’ve seen this approach receive pushback before when patents have surfaced, and recently, an ad popping up in-game for users playing Assassin Creed. Ubisoft released a statement saying it was a technical error. The response from gamers has been nothing but negative, making it clear they don’t wasn’t this form of advertisement.

Will Netflix follow through, or will they look at past examples and go another approach? Only time will tell.
