Action-Puzzle Hybrid Humanity Launches May 2023; Free Demo Available Now

During today’s State of Play event, Japanese studios THA ltd. and Enhance revealed that their eccentric action-puzzle hybrid game Humanity will finally be launching in May 2023. The VR-optional title puts players in charge of a formerly-human Shiba Inu that can control hordes of human beings to lead them towards a literal light in over 90 story stages. A free 10-stage demo of the game is available now for a limited time until March 6.

Check out Humanity’s reveal trailer below:

Humanity was initially announced in September 2019 as a PSVR-optional title coming to PS4 in 2020, but has since been delayed numerous times. The game finally has a release window of May 2023, and will remain compatible with the original PSVR on the PS4 edition even though it also supports the PSVR2 headset and its exclusive features on the PS5.

In Humanity, players assume the role of a telekinetic Shiba Inu that used to be a human. This curious dog can control massive groups of human beings, who will move, jump, pile together and even fight enemies at his behest. The game is divided into puzzle challenges called “Trials,” where the Shiba Inu has to direct these human beings towards the literal light at the end of the stage.

Along the way, players will also encounter the hostile humanoid Others, who will have to either be evaded or taken down in order for the Shiba Inu to be able to guide his followers to the light. A Stage Creator tool allows players to create original stages and experience others’ creations to continue their adventure even after the end of the 90-plus-stage story.

A free demo of Humanity is now available until March 6 on PC, PS5, and PS4 with the following features:

  • 10 stages – A variety of levels sampled from the first few areas of the full game, which features over 90 stages in its Story mode.
  • User Stages (Beta) – Check out levels created by other players! Browse curated playlists of the best community-produced content, refreshed regularly, or search by tag for hidden gems.
  • Stage Creator (Beta) – A super-intuitive set of tools and tutorials that will have anyone making their own levels within minutes, so they can share them with the larger community!
  • Optional VR compatibility – Players with a PS VR2, PS VR, or PC VR headset (note: in this Demo, only the Meta Quest headset and controllers are officially supported, but the full game will support more headsets) can immerse themselves even deeper within the world of HUMANITY.

Humanity is set to release in May 2023 on PC, PS5 (with PSVR2 support), and PS4 (with PSVR support) for $29.99/€29.99/¥3410. Check out our coverage of the rest of the State of Play event as well.

Synapse: Surreal Telekinetic Dual-Wielding Shooter Landing on PSVR2 Later in 2023

During today’s State of Play event, accomplished VR developer nDreams of Fracked fame unveiled its new VR title Synapse, coming exclusively to the PSVR2 headset later in 2023. Synapse is a shooter game that gives players the power of telekinesis to dual-wield alongside regular firearms in combat, and features a surreal monochrome art style that highlights and puts thematic weight into any occasional pops of colour.

Check out the Synapse reveal trailer below:

Synapse makes use of eye tracking-enhanced aiming to ensure precise targeting with the telekinetic ability that can be used to move both environment objects and enemy characters. Full 1:1 motion control further heightens the experience by demanding significant physical involvement from the player to effectively wield telekinesis.

The player character uses one hand for telekinetic abilities while the other is reserved for traditional firearms, with players given the liberty to make any use of this combination they see fit. For example, a defensive approach could involve significant usage of makeshift cover created using telekinesis, while the same telekinetic abilities could also be used to immobilize and vanquish enemies in brilliant bursts of color. The game also takes full advantage of the PSVR2’s 4K HDR OLED displays to make these moments shine, and utilizes foveated rendering to highlight the graphical detail of areas that are currently in focus.

Synapse goes live later in 2023 exclusively for the PSVR2. Check out our coverage of the rest of the State of Play event as well.

Mortal Kombat 12 Releasing in 2023 According to Warner Bros. Discovery

In its Q4 2022 earnings call today, Warner Bros. Discovery has revealed that NetherRealm Studios’ Mortal Kombat 12 title will be released sometime in 2023. No other details about the game have been announced, but a formal announcement from NetherRealm Studios should be pretty close.

Owned by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, NetherRealm Studios has been virtually silent about a new Mortal Kombat since the release of Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019. Files possibly pertaining to a potential Mortal Kombat 12 were seen on a NetherRealm Studios developer’s workstation early last year, but the slip was not addressed afterwards. Development on Mortal Kombat 11 has long ceased, and studio head Ed Boon finally revealed back in November that the company’s next game announcement would either be Injustice 3 or Mortal Kombat 12.

During the webcast of Warner Bros. Discovery’s Q4 2022 earnings call today, it was revealed that the company expects MK12 to be released during 2023 along with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The parent company has “ambitious launch projections” for the release of these games, so we can expect significant marketing of MK12 pending a formal announcement from NetherRealm Studios in the coming months.

Warner Bros. Games’ Hogwarts Legacy, the critically acclaimed, open-world, action role-playing game (RPG) has sold more than 12 million units and $850 million in sales globally in its first two weeks of launch on PlayStation®5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, which surpasses all of the company’s previous game launches. The game has exceeded sales records across the three platforms it is currently available on and broke records for streaming by becoming the biggest single-player game ever on Twitch with 1.28 million peak concurrent viewers at launch.

Hogwarts Legacy is also breaking company records for player engagement with 280 million hours played to date. What makes this even more impressive is, the game isn’t even out yet for the PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch! I gather, once the game is out on those platforms, I wouldn’t be surprised to see that sales total double.

Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania “Richter Mode” Lets Fans Play as Richter Belmont in Secret Level

In the final teaser for the upcoming Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania DLC released today, Motion Twin has revealed that players will be able to assume the role of the legendary Richter Belmont in a secret level buried in Dracula’s castle. Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania’s “Richter Mode” features Richter’s moveset from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and even lets players break candles with his whip to collect hearts.

Watch the teaser below:

Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania is a massive new expansion by Motion Twin and Evil Empire for the former’s 2018 “roguevania” title Dead Cells. The DLC takes players back to the roots of the genre in the Castlevania universe, with the Beheaded now seeking to take on Dracula himself. From the developers:

WIELD CLASSIC CASTLEVANIA WEAPONS
Unlock 14 iconic weapons such as the Vampire Killer, Throwing Axe & Holy Water to decimate Dracula’s bestiary of monsters and finally the dark lord himself. Each item has been translated into the fast-paced combat of Dead Cells while keeping their original essence.

EXPLORE EVERY CORNER OF DRACULA’S CASTLE

Secret rooms. Flame-lit corridors. Gloomy tombs. Beautiful paintings. Food hidden in the walls. Full of original monsters from the series, such as harpies, werewolves & haunted armors, the character of the iconic castle will transport you into the realms of gothic fantasy.

ENJOY CLASSIC & REIMAGINED MUSIC
We’re giving you access to an alternative soundtrack made of 51 of the original Castlevania tunes, that can be heard across the entire game. Yes, 51!

On top of this, we’ve taken the 12 most iconic tracks, such as Vampire Killer, Bloody Tears and Simon Belmont’s Theme, and reimagined them in the style of Dead Cells as a soundtrack for this DLC, while preserving the Castlevania ambiance of course.

DISCOVER A NEW STORYLINE
Richter Belmont and Alucard will be by your side throughout your quest to vanquish Dracula, helping you to navigate the maze of Dracula’s Castle and providing you with strong weapons (sometimes willingly, sometimes not). However, where there is good there is evil, so watch out for powerful foes who will try everything in their power to stop you from reaching the throne room.

MASTER THREE EPIC BOSS FIGHTS
Fight against the very essence of evil in two intense duels versus Death and Dracula, both set against a majestic backdrop. If you can survive these gauntlets, prepare yourself for our most ambitious boss showdown yet…

UNLOCK CASTLEVANIA CHARACTER OUTFITS
Unlock 20 outfits as you progress through the castle, letting you roleplay as all your favourite characters like Alucard, Richter Belmont, Simon Belmont, Maria Renard, Trevor Belmont, Sypha Belnades or even Dracula himself.

The Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania DLC goes live March 6, 2023, for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
