Gotham Knights and Hogwarts Legacy Still Coming in 2022, WB Promises

Gotham Knights and Hogwarts Legacy, two of the most anticipated games for this year won’t be delayed any time soon, are still coming in 2022, as promised by Warner Bros. This reiterates the company’s plans aren’t changing and they are sticking to schedule.

Confirming things on his own Twitter account, Warner Media CEO Jason Killar said that it was part of the company’s mission to release these games this year.

Originally announced during Sony’s PS5 event last September, Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world RPG set in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The first trailer of the game suggested it was going to be released on late 2021, but Warner Bros. decided to give the developers more time to work on the game and delayed it until some time in 2022 instead.

Another game that was rescheduled to some time in 2022 is Gotham Knights. Developed by Batman Arkham Origins studio WB Games Montreal, the game is set after the apparent deaths of Batman and Commissioner Gordon. Gotham City has fallen into lawlessness, and it’s up to Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood, and Robin to continue on with the mission of The Dark Knight and save the city from crime and villainy.

The last time fans saw anything about Gotham Knights was a behind-the-scenes video released during DC FanDome, and you can view that here.

SEGA Officially Leaves the Arcade Business After More Than 50 Years

SEGA has officially left the arcade business in Japan after more than 50 years, signalling the end of an era for Japan and video game history. The company  has decided to sell their remaining shares to Genda Inc. and rebrand them under a different name.

Releasing a statement on Twitter, Genda chief executive Takashi Kataoka said SEGA’s former arcades will all be renamed as GiGo or Get into the Gaming Oasis.

The signs of SEGA’s departure from arcades began as early as the rise of the home console market. With video games eventually making more money at home than at arcade cabinets, businesses have struggled to keep these machines afloat. However, when the global pandemic hit in 2020, things started to take a drastic turn and SEGA eventually sold a large majority of their arcade business to turn a profit. Now, it seems that the company has decided to go all in, and has sold their remaining shares to Genda entirely.

It was more than a year ago when we reported that SEGA was planning to leave the arcade business, with the company closing its iconic SEGA Akihabara Building 2 on August 17, 2020 and a lot of Japanese gamers and fans converging in the area to say goodbye and pay their respects.

Elden Ring ‘Easy Mode’ and Difficulty Addressed by Miyazaki

The conversation around accessibility in video games is a never-ending one, and now Souls series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki finally weighs in on the upcoming Elden Ring, ‘Easy Mode,’ and the difficulty in the FromSoftware’s flagship series. Check out the snippet from the exclusive interview below to see just how the legendary director justifies the studio’s design principles and more.

Posted over on the PlayStation Blog, when asked if the ongoing discourse around game difficulty and accessibility it affected FromSoftware’s development of Elden Ring, Miyazaki had this to say:

Yes, we have. It’s a valid discussion. I feel like our approach to these games, not just Elden Ring, is to design them to encourage the player to overcome adversity. We don’t try to force difficulty or make things hard for the sake of it. We want players to use their cunning, study the game, memorize what’s happening, and learn from their mistakes. We don’t want players to feel like the game is unfairly punishing, but rather that there’s a chance to win a difficult encounter and make progress. We understand that Souls-like games are regularly associated with impossible levels of difficulty with high barriers to entry. But we try to design the games to make the cycle of repeatedly trying to overcome these challenges enjoyable in itself. So we hope that with Elden Ring and the new options it provides, it will be a success in that respect.

In Elden Ring, we have not intentionally tried to lower the game’s difficulty, but I think more players will finish it this time. As I mentioned, the player’s level of freedom to progress through the world or return to a challenge later are all elements that I feel will help people get through the game at a more leisurely pace. Also, there isn’t a focus on pure action. The player has more agency to dictate their approach against, for example, the field bosses in the overworld and how they utilize stealth in various situations. We’ve even reduced the number of hoops that you have to jump through to enjoy it in multiplayer. So we hope the players embrace that idea of receiving help from others. And we feel like the overall clear rate will go up this time because of these things.

In short, it appears that for better or worse, FromSoftware has still sticked to their core design, although this time around offering more freedom to the player in how they will handle adversity in Elden Ring. In any case, in terms of accessibility, players should not expect an ‘easy mode’ for Elden Ring anytime soon, although the lack of one has not really stopped FromSoftware titles from being enjoyable and beloved by many in gaming.

In case you missed it, FromSoftware also confirmed that the main story for Elden Ring will take around 30 hours to beat, and you can check out the whole thing here.

Earn enough reputation, and you’ll be able to claim a Trials Engram from Saint-14! This engram can be focused into any currently available trials loot you have previously obtained, or it can be taken to Master Rahool for a random Trials drop. Your reputation increases after every match completion, based on the amount of round-wins on your card, regardless of the result of that match itself (win or lose, 0-5 or 5-4).

Once you have gone flawless, keep playing! Every win on your still-flawless card will give you a chance at bonus, additional post-match drops of the Adept weapon for that week. Once you lose a game, you will no longer get these adept drops. However, still winning games at 7 wins even on a non-flawless can can drop bonus trials engrams, prisms, and even ascendant shards.

When you’re done, you can cash in your 7-win passage for one additional adept drop, granted you have gone flawless that week. This resets your card so you can start anew.

House of Ashes Update 1.07 Adds Curator’s Cut & Free Friend’s Pass This January 28

Supermassive has released the House of Ashes update 1.07 (PS5 version 1.000.007) today, and it adds new features to the horror game! Read on for everything new in the House of Ashes January 28 patch notes.

House of Ashes Update 1.07 Patch Notes | House of Ashes Update 1.000.007 Patch Notes | House of Ashes January 28 Patch Notes:

Here’s the info straight from the press release:

All existing owners of any of the three entries in the series, Man of Medan, Little Hope or House of Ashes, will gain access to a free Friend’s Pass – enabling players to experience one full playthrough of that game via Multiplayer Shared Story mode with a friend who does not own the game.

The House of Ashes Curator’s Cut is now free for everyone! Originally released as a pre-order DLC bonus, the Curator’s Cut can now be unlocked for all players once they have completed a playthrough of the game in theatrical (normal) mode. The mode allows players to replay the game from a different perspective, with different playable characters in certain scenes, new choices, new outcomes and frightening new deaths.

That’s about it for this patch. If you haven’t played the game yet, go read our review where we gave it a glowing 8/10 score, and state, “House of Ashes might not offer anything groundbreaking for horror fans, or those used to Supermassive Games, but it doesn’t really need to. Those interested in this knows they are getting a cinematic, horror game that is just as fun watching, as it is playing. It won’t win anyone over who’s expecting a groundbreaking experience, but for those wanting a bit of some B-Horror action in their life, especially with Halloween around the corner, this might just be the game for you.”

Splitgate Beta Season 1 Ranked Changes; Solution to Snowballing, Weapon Spawns Detailed

Speaking recently during a preview event, 1047 Games CEO Ian Proulx detailed the changes that came with the Splitgate Beta Season 1 ranked mode. Check out his response on the ranked changes, as well as why the studio saw fit to implement these to Splitgate.

The segment was part of the Q and A portion for the preview event for Splitgate Beta Season 1. When asked of the upcoming changes on Ranked Season 1, Proulx had this to say:

Nothing changed for the ranked mode other than – and this is not specific to ranked – we’ve changed a number of the locations of weapon pickups and which weapons spawn on each map. A lot of each just came down to balancing. I’d say the overarching theme is ‘no major changes,’ but in general we’ve reduced the number of power weapons on each map. We just felt that there are a number of maps, especially Stadium for example, where originally you had a shotgun, a sniper, a railgun, and a plasma rifle, and on a small map like that, it can get very snowbally. One team gets a teamwipe, and now you control all power weapons; you’re in control for the rest of the game.

So, we wanted to kind of allow it to be a little easier to fight back. In general, I wouldn’t say it’s drastic by any means, but kind of the overarching theme for every map is slightly fewer power weapons.

There you have it. It would seem that in an effort to stop snowballing in-game, weapon spawns were tinkered around with. While we’ve yet to know the long-terms effects of this change given that Splitgate Beta Season 1 just started yesterday, it will be interesting to see if this balances ranked mode better for the game’s players.

Check out our preview of Splitgate Beta Season 1 here, where we go over the custom map creator, new cosmetics, and more!

Report: “MK12” Spotted on NetherRealm Developer’s Work Station

Following NetherRealm Studios’ announcement last year that they have stopped work on Mortal Kombat 11, it’s logical to assume that the studio would be working on Mortal Kombat 12 (MK12) next. While no official announcement has been made, a NetherRealm dev seems to have accidentally confirmed that they are working on it.

Over on Twitter, NetherRealm Senior Production Manager Jonathan Andersen tweeted (now deleted) an image of his work station, which included a bunch of old Mortal Kombat promotional material:

Over on the top right corner, there is a file named “MK12_Mast” which we presume is somehow connected to Mortal Kombat 12. Here’s a shot of it zoomed in:

Of course, there is the chance that MK12 could stand for something else, but that’s highly unlikely. Given how the series is one of the longest-running in all of video games, and the fact that Mortal Kombat 11 sold over 12 million units worldwide, we’d wager good money that a sequel is on the way.

Mortal Kombat 12 being in development isn’t really that surprising, but now we can state that at least the studio’s devs are looking over it is a bit more comforting. Hopefully, an official announcement is due soon.

What would you want to see from MK12? What new features are you expecting from it? Let us know your thoughts below.

Thanks, CaptainKashup!

Eidos-Montreal Chose to Work on Guardians of the Galaxy IP Due to Same Underdog Personality

It would seem that when given the opportunity, Eidos-Montreal could have potentially developed a Marvel game with any franchise, but the studio chose Guardians of the Galaxy, given studio felt they were “underdogs” which was the same most people thought with the Guardians IP.

Speaking with Insomniac’s Ted Price in the latest Game Maker’s Notebook Podcast, Senior Creative Director Jean-François Dugas revealed just exactly how the team came about working on one of Marvel’s biggest team of characters.

With David (Heads of Studio). I know he was pursuing that dream of working with a big partner like Marvel and everything, and eventually he approached us, and Mary (Senior Narrative Director), myself, and a few other people and said we have a chance to collaborate with Marvel. He asked us with the franchises within Marvel, what we would love the best? And he already had this idea, but our idea was similar. We felt that Guardians of the Galaxy was a team of underdogs that was fitting our personality, fitting our studio in some ways as well because I guess every time when we were working on Dues Ex it was like “Nah, there’s no chance they were going to make a good Deus Ex, and now Guardians – there’s no chance that Guardians will be good.” We feel like we’re a bit like those kind of underdogs, so we started with that franchise and we got in it, got excited by all the possibility with it.

I think it’s safe to say that this was one perfect match up that nobody expected to pull through prior to release. In fact, it was so good that it became one of my favorite releases of last year! In our review, I gave it an impressive 9.5/10 score, and said, “After playing Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy I am convinced that Eidos Montreal and Marvel IPs go hand-in-hand like peanut butter and jelly. It’s the perfect combination of sweet and salty, wrapped in one incredible package.”

The poster boy of SNK’s fighting game division gets his iconic redesign and look back, as a King of Fighters 15 Terry Bogard trailer punches its way out! It features Terry Bogard in his Garou: Mark of the Wolves DLC costume, which is a bonus outfit that will given to those who pre-order the game!

Here’s the new video showing off the Fatal Fury mainstay wearing his other recognizable threads and showing off his moves!

First appearing in the critically acclaimed Fatal Fury sequel released in 1999, Terry’s look in Garou demonstrates that the legendary hungry wolf has gotten older and wiser in the passage of time following his victory against Geese Howard. No longer sporting his signature red Fatal Fury cap and trucker outfit, the outfit sees Bogard wearing a long brown bomber jacket, a silver star belt buckle, and a shorter longer hairstyle as compared to wearing a ponytail in his younger days. SNK has given him the nickname Wild Wolf to reflect this grown up version of Terry, who still loves to fight in tournaments while also taking up a mentor and adoptive father role to Geese’s son, Rock Howard.

SNK also revealed a new character trailer for Elisabeth Blantorche, and you can check that out here.

The King of Fighters 15 will be out for PC and consoles this February 17.

The Elder Scrolls Online New Chapter High Isle:

In High Isle, ESO’s more than 20 million players will experience an island paradise steeped in medieval culture and architecture, complete with magnificent castles and exciting tournament grounds. The story of this year’s Chapter focuses on political intrigue, and High Isle is the perfect getaway destination for alliance delegates to take on peace talks that would put an end to the Three Banners War. While the summit is hosted by the noble Society of the Steadfast, players should beware of The Ascendant Order and their chaotic motives.

A previously unexplored region, the Systres Archipelago takes inspiration from the beautiful, windswept shores of the Mediterranean. Here lies the stunning world of High Isle, home of the Bretons, descendants of both humans and elves. The social elite live in the feudalistic society of Gonfalon Bay, the center point of all political dealings on High Isle. Above all, ruthlessness is a virtue here, so players will have to watch their backs!

The Legacy of Bretons will last throughout 2022, and will span four major updates this year! Players who pre-purchase the High Isle chapter will get a new pet today!

Lastly, also coming this year is a brand-new card game called “Tales of Tribute” which will be playable within The Elder Scrolls Online. According to Bethesda, the card game is a “unique, resource-building game complete with PvP and PvE.” Players can increase their rank through the card game’s own leveling system. And as one migh texpect, there are rewards tied to Tales of Tribute! Players can earn stuff like “furnishings, transmute stones, and even advancing a storyline by competing against specific NPCs around the world.”
