Nexon Blames Underwhelming LawBreakers Sales on PUBG’s Success

Publisher Nexon is blaming PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’ success as responsible for the disappointing LawBreakers sales figures.

In its Q3 2017 earnings report, Nexon mentioned PUBG by name, stating that the game made “the market environment very tough for first-person shooters in general and LawBreakers.”

Our results in North America in the third quarter were below our outlook, mainly due to the sales from LawBreakers being below our expectations. LawBreakers is a unique FPS developed for core users. We had very high expectations for its launch; however, the timing of its launch turned out to be unfortunate, specifically the blockbuster PC online game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds came out right about the same time, making the market environment very tough for first-person shooters in general and for LawBreakers.

It’s worth noting that PUBG launched in Early Access towards the end of March, while LawBreakers released in August.

Do you think PUBG is to blame for LawBreakers lack of success? Or is it down to something else? Let us know.

Pink Darth Vader Now Playable as EA CM Gives the “Okay” for Cosmetic Battlefront II Mods

When defending Battlefront II‘s microtransactions, EA’s Blake Jorgensen claimed that players wouldn’t want alternatives like a pink skin for Darth Vader:

“Darth Vader in white probably doesn’t make sense, versus in black. Not to mention you probably don’t want Darth Vader in pink. No offense to pink, but I don’t think that’s right in the canon.”

Well, it looks like players do indeed want a pink Darth Vader, and through mods, it’s now become a reality.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEVFgKoq7z0

User Destauch has made the mod available over at Nexus Mods, with a White Darth Vader skin “coming soon.”

Of course, mods in an online game have always been a dodgy topic, even when it’s just a cosmetic change. Thankfully, at least according to one of EA’s community managers, mods that “do not change how the game functions and are just for visual effect … should be okay.”

EA_Barry over at EA Answers claims it “should be okay,” but I’d still be wary with mods in Battlefront II, and would recommend staying away until EA clearly defines what is allowed.

What do you make of Pink Darth Vader? What other Battlefront II mods would you like to see? Let us know.

Heroes of the Storm PTR Update Adds New Hero, Tweaks Battlegrounds & More

A new Heroes of the Storm update is available to test out on the PTR. Players are able to test out the new hero, Blaze, as well as other significant upcoming changes. This latest patch will be available for playtesting until January 8.

Here’s all you need to know about the new hero:

Cpl. Miles “Blaze” Lewis has always been drawn to the flame, but it wasn’t until he joined up with Raynor’s Raiders that he put his pyromania to good use. He’s seen his fair share of battles since then, and has never failed to bring the heat.

– Trait

Pyromania

Gain 25 Armor and deal 40 damage to nearby enemies every 0.5 seconds for 4 seconds. Each Hero hit by Flame Stream reduces Pyromania’s cooldown by 5 seconds.

– Basic Abilities

Flame Stream (Q)

Fire two streams of flame that deal 83 damage to enemies hit. Flame Stream sets fire to Oil Spills it comes in contact with.

Oil Spill (W)

Vector Targeting.

Dispense a slick of oil that lasts for 5 seconds and Slows enemies that come in contact with it by 40%. Flame Stream can set Oil Spills on fire for 2.5 seconds, dealing 18 damage every 0.3 seconds to enemies inside. While on fire, Oil Spills no longer Slow enemies. Additionally, Blaze is Healed for 49 Health every 0.3 seconds while standing in flaming Oil Spills. Stores up to 2 charges.

Jet Propulsion (E)

After 0.5 seconds, charge forward, colliding with the first enemy Hero hit, dealing 52 damage to them and nearby enemy Heroes. Enemies hit are also Stunned for 1.25 seconds.

– Heroic Abilities

Bunker Drop (R)

After 0.5 seconds, deploy and enter a Bunker with 1300 Health. Blaze and his allies can enter and exit the Bunker at will. While in the Bunker, occupants gain access to Flamethrower, dealing 179 damage to enemies in a line. Exiting the Bunker grants 25 Armor for 2 seconds. Bunkers last 10 seconds, or until destroyed.

Combustion (R)

Channel up to 2.6 seconds. Once Channeling ends, nearby enemies are Slowed by 60% and take 48 damage every 0.5 seconds. Combustion’s Slow and damage over time durations are extended the longer Blaze Channels, from 1 second up to 5 seconds. Blaze’s Movement Speed is reduced by 50% while Channeling.

Here’s the “patch notes” as tweeted by the official PUBG Twitter account:

And here’s the plain text version, just in case the Twitter embed fails you:

Pokemon Go China Release Confirmed, to Launch in Second Half of 2018

While mobile gamers worldwide have played Pokemone Go since launch, the same can’t be said for people in China. For those unfamiliar with the situation, Pokemon Go has been banned in China up to now due to concerns over the game and national security and public safety due to the game necessitating players to catch Pokemons from different real-world areas.

All of those are about to change, though. The Pokemon Go China release schedule has been confirmed! Developer Niantic has partnered with Chinese publisher NetEase to bring the mobile game to the region in the second half of 2018!

Given how big the gaming and mobile market is in China, this move might just be what Niantic needs to kickstart Pokemon Go’s player base once again after the initial craze has winded down.

If you’re from China, are people there eagerly awaiting Pokemon Go? Or has the craze died down there as well?

Mutant Football League PS4 and Xbox One Release Date Announced, Free Content Coming Soon

If you’re a relatively old gamer, then chances are you’ve heard or remember Mutant League Football when it was released on the SEGA Genesis way back in 1993. The game’s spiritual successor, named Mutant Football League since EA owns the original IP rights, has seen a release on PC last November 2017, but now, the Mutant Football League release date for consoles have been dated!

Mutant Football League for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will punt out this January 19, 2018! In addition to that, a retail edition will be available this summer as well. Michael Mendheim, the original creator and lead designer of Mutant League Football, has also promised free content after January 19.

Check out gameplay footage of Mutant Football League below.

According to developer Digital Dreams, a multi-season dynasty mode will be added to the game come February or March. This dynasty mode will have the player build their own team to make it into a contender over several seasons.

More details about the upcoming update and on the game’s development can be read here.

Anyone looking forward to this? Will it spark a new wave of NBA Jam-like games like in the ’90s? One can hope, no?

Call of Duty: WWII Winter Bribe PC Issues Acknowledged by Sledgehammer, January Twitch Prime to Be Supply Drops

While the Winter Siege event for Call of Duty: WWII is now over, players can still finish challenges and contracts related to the event. Unfortunately, PC players didn’t have the same luck as the Winter Bribe challenges were bugged.

Over on Reddit, the official Sledgehammer Games account acknowledged the issue, and mentions that the studio is doing “something special” for the PC community.

In case the embedded Reddit post didn’t show up, it reads:

Hey there, it took us a little while to figure out what exactly happened and the fix wouldn’t have been implemented in time before Winter Siege ended, unfortunately. We are planning on doing something special for the PC community, and will let you know when we have more info. Stay tuned!

There you go, PC players! At least you’ll be getting something, right?

Additionally, the January Twitch Prime membership content drop has been revealed, and it’s none other than Supply Drops for COD: WWII! Twitch Prime members can expect to get an Epic Supply Drop, and one Rare Supply Drop! This deal will last from January 2-22, 2018 (via CharlieIntel).

Those who are Twitch Prime members can check here to get make sure their Twitch account is linked to their Call of Duty profile. Once linked, you should see the free Supply Drops in your mail box in COD: WWII.

Don’t forget, hardcore Kill Confirmed is still in the game even after the Winter Siege event.

Overwatch Season 8 Is Here With Big Changes & New Dev Update Discusses Content for 2018

Happy New… Overwatch season to you! Season 8 has officially kicked off, giving competitive players the chance to improve on previous efforts.

Season 8 comes with some significant changes, as Blizzard attempts to “increase match quality.” Scroll down for everything you need to know!

Limiting the Skill Rating variance for Teams

The first change is limiting the maximum Skill Rating (SR) difference between the highest SR player on a team and the lowest SR player on the same team. This will especially help players at both the lower and higher limits of SR, where there are typically fewer players available. If a player has an SR of 4500, there are not that many other players who have a similarly high SR. The matchmaker has previously assigned players who are of a much lower SR to the same team as 4500 SR player, and hasn’t always created the best match experience possible.

Removing Personal Performance Skill Rating Adjustments for Diamond tier players and above

When you win a competitive match of Overwatch, you gain Skill Rating, and when you lose a match you also lose Skill Rating. The amount that you gain or lose is calculated based on many different factors, and here’s a quick list of some of the most important ones:

– If you have a higher than 50% chance to win a match, you gain less for a win and lose more for a defeat. Conversely, if you were an underdog in a match than you gain more SR when you win and lose less SR when defeated.

– New players experience both higher gains and higher losses than players who have completed a lot of matches.

– You gain less SR for a win than you lose for a defeat as you more closely approach the system’s mathematical upper limit 5000 SR. (So at very high SRs you do need a greater than 50% win rate to keep your SR stable.)

There is also another factor in determining the SR change after completing a match, and that’s a measurement of how well you personally performed during the match. If you perform well than you gain more SR when you win, and lose less SR when defeated. The reverse is also true, so if you perform very poorly you gain less SR for a win and lose additional SR when defeated. The personal performance adjustments have been controversial amongst the community for quite some time, especially since the calculations for these adjustments are not at all transparent.

The adjustment does create a lot of positive system wide effects including rewarding players who make the effort to play well, punishing inactive players, and more quickly providing fairer matches for new players or those who decide to play a new hero or role. So we spent quite a lot of time examining data over multiple seasons, checking a lot of math, reading a LOT of community feedback, and then doing some deep soul searching about this. Especially at the higher levels of online competition where every point of SR matters, we want players to not be distracted and worry about how to optimize around the personal performance adjustment. They should just be trying to WIN. So after we get back from the holidays on January 2nd we’re going to turn off the personal performance SR adjustments for players in the Diamond skill tier and above.

If you only recently picked up the game, note that you’ll need to be at least level 25 in order to compete. So get grinding, find out who your strongest characters are, and then battle to become the best!

In addition to this, Jeff Kaplan has appeared in a new developer update, in which he discusses what Blizzard has achieved over the last year, and what’s coming to the game in 2018.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=za_9xD4K1so

Are you looking forward to another year of Overwatch? Let us know.

In other Overwatch news, Blizzard trolled the community  with a 10-hour livestream, and a fan made an incredible map which you have to check out.

Footage of Cancelled “Modernized” Star Wars X-Wing Game Emerges

I think I speak for the majority when I say that Star Wars Battlefront II‘s space combat is one of the game’s better features. EA’s support of Criterion Games was clearly justified, as the developer really nailed it.

However, with Double Damage now revealing its own Star Wars space battle project, which was pitched to EA in 2016, we’ve now got to wonder whether DD could have done an even better job.

Double Damage’s Travis Baldree spoke with Kotaku about his team’s take on a “modernized” X-Wing.

“This was back in 2016, and we pitched a modernized take on X-Wing with all the classic bits … Their idea was to retain the idea of a campaign, but also adjust the old X-Wing formula to suit modern audiences, like adding pilot aids and control modifications to suit control pads, as well as adding the ability to save a mission’s progress at any point (constantly restarting 60-minute missions after failing at the 57-minute mark can stay in 1993, thanks).

“It was a long-shot, and we had near-nil hopes that it would be seriously considered, but we probably did it to please ourselves rather than out of any hope that it would get greenlit.”

What’s more, Baldree also provided work-in-progress footage of the game, in which the Millennium Falcon wreaks havoc for five minutes:

What do you think of Double Damage’s Star Wars concept? Would you have liked to see it realized? Or was EA right to politely decline? Let us know.

Call of Duty: WWII Hardcore Kill Confirmed Still Playable After Winter Siege Event

In addition to bestowing players with new items and a new map to play on, Call of Duty: WWII‘s Winter Siege brought both standard and hardcore “Moshpit” modes to the game. The Hardcore Moshpit game type is especially interesting, as it allows for hardcore variants for modes that aren’t featured in the HC playlist.

Hardcore Kill Confirmed (HCKC) has been a particular favorite for players, with many preferring it over the Hardcore Team Deathmatch mode.

Sledgehammer Games’ Michael Condrey has good news for those who do prefer HCKC, as the mode will still be available to play after Winter Siege, finding its new home in the Hardcore playlist.

That’s great news for Hardcore fans, I’m sure! Let me know if you’ll be giving it a try.

In other Call of Duty: WWII news, a $1.50 wager dispute results in a casualty due to “swatting” in Kansas, Sledgehammer Games is to provide insight into some of the studio’s “design choices” for the game, and here’s what the latest update did to weapon balance.

New Call of Duty: WWII Update Rolling Out, Weighs in at 1.8 GB on PS4 (Update #2)

Update 2:

Sledgehammer Games has stated that this update’s sole purpose is to remove Winter Siege content.

Update 1:

Sledgehammer Games has confirmed that the Winter Siege event has ended. However, it’s still possible to complete Orders in progress and open Winter Siege supply drops. The Winter Collection is also still available, though Winter Collection Rewards are not.

Original Story:

A new Call of Duty: WWII update is rolling out. It’s currently available to download and install on PS4. The PS4 patch (1.08) is 1.8 GB in size, which is fairly substantial.

We’re still waiting for the update to roll out across Xbox One systems, and potentially PC.

Patch notes should be made available soon, and we’ll have this post updated with those as soon as possible. Expect the removal of the Winter Siege event, and replacements for the winter-themed Headquarters and modes.

What are you hoping this patch tweaks? Do you think weapons need rebalancing, or are you wanting more content? Let us know.

In other Call of Duty: WWII news, a $1.50 wager dispute results in a casualty due to “swatting” in Kansas, Sledgehammer Games is to provide insight into some of the studio’s “design choices” for the game, and here’s what the latest update did to weapon balance.

Call of Duty: WWII Retains Top Spot in UK Charts for Nine Consecutive Weeks

Whatever your opinion of the game is, it can’t be argued that Call of Duty: WWII is kicking some seriously ass in the UK charts. Nine consecutive weeks at the top means it has matched Modern Warfare II.

The UK charts for the week ending December 30 retain the same top five as the previous week, with FIFA 18 coming second, Star Wars Battlefront II in third, Assassin’s Creed Origins in fourth, and the unkillable Grand Theft Auto V sitting in fifth.

Here’s the top 20 games:

1 – CALL OF DUTY: WWII

2 – FIFA 18

3 – STAR WARS BATTLEFRONT II

4 – ASSASSIN’S CREED ORIGINS

5 – GRAND THEFT AUTO V

6 – SUPER MARIO ODYSSEY

7 – THE SIMS 4

8 – GRAN TURISMO: SPORT

9 – MARIO KART 8 DELUXE

10 – THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: BREATH OF THE WILD

11 – PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS

12 – NEED FOR SPEED PAYBACK

13 – DESTINY 2

14 – LEGO MARVEL SUPER HEROES 2

15 – WWE 2K18

16 – ROCKET LEAGUE: COLLECTORS EDITION

17 – FORZA MOTORSPORT 7

18 – CRASH BANDICOOT N.SANE TRILOGY

19 – L.A. NOIRE

20 – LEGO WORLDS

When will the sales slow down, I wonder. Do you think WWII is deserving of this success? Let us know.

Latest Timesplitters Rewind Developer Update Talks About the Project’s Status

In case you didn’t know, Timesplitters, the cult favorite first-person shooter that broke out during the PlayStation 2 era, is being revived by a group of enthusiastic people called “Timesplitters Rewind.”

While the development on the project started way back in 2013, the project hasn’t been in full development since it’s not an official product, but rather, a fan-made project being made on CryEngine 3.

The people behind the mod have revealed a Timesplitters Rewind development update video just before the year ended (December 31, 2017), where they talk about adding more guns and more. Check it out below to see some shots of the environment too.

You can read up on the project’s official status and updates on the official site. With the demo originally set to hit back a few years ago, and then in 2017 (which didn’t happen), let’s hope this is the year it finally sees the light of day even in beta form.

Our own Joel Santana is a big Timesplitters fan so if there’s any new developments, we’ll be sure to let everyone know.
