343 Industries Teases “Halo 5” Concept Art Hinting at Game’s Setting

Developers 343 Industries tease what’s in store for Halo fans this year with new concept art hinting at the studio’s next big project.

“2014 is here and much is afoot in the Halo universe,” writes former creative director Josh Holmes in a recent HaloWaypoint blog entry. “This past year has been a time of great transition at 343 as we’ve moved our engine and team from Xbox 360 to Xbox One and begun building the next chapter in the Halo saga. We’re proud of what we accomplished with our first release in Halo 4 and now we’re focused on something much more transformative as we make the leap to the next generation of Xbox.”

The post goes on to recap a few of the personnel changes made within the studio over the past year, including the addition of new creative director Tim Longo who worked on games like Tomb Raider, Star Wars: Republic Commando and most recently, the unreleased FPS, Star Wars: First Assault. A few words were also said by former Art Director, Kenneth Scott, who recently left the studio.

To wrap things up, Holmes teased a brand new image of the 343’s upcoming, untitled Halo project, saying, “I will leave you with this image from Sparth – an early exploration of a new location that features prominently in a little game project we’re tinkering with…. ”

Call of Duty: Ghosts – Incoming Roster Lock For Next Clan War

Call of Duty: Ghosts co-developer Beachhead Studio is making a few minor, but important changes to Clan Wars that you may want to know about.

On Reddit, an official studio member announced that the team will be putting a roster lock on the next Clan War in accordance with community feedback.

“Hey guys — just to give you advance warning for the next clan war, Beachhead has heard the community concerns and is going to put a roster lock in for the next clan war.

This means that the roster you have the day before a clan war starts will be the roster that is capable of scoring wins for your team; people who join mid-match will still be able to join and play, but their wins will not count towards progress in the war.”

So, keep that in mind before the next Call of Duty: Ghosts Clan War begins, and you’re all set.

If you haven’t yet, be sure to check out the many improvements coming to competitive Call of Duty: Ghosts.

More Evolve Details Surface – Classes, Goliath, Wildlife, Gameplay, and More

Intrigued by the next-gen shooter Evolve, the latest title to be revealed from the Left 4 Dead creators?

You’ll be in for a treat today, as a recent thread from the NeoGaf community has surface where one user managed to get their hands on a ton of information regarding the game from the upcoming issue of GameInformer, set to hit next month.

He revealed that Turtle Rock, the development team responsible for Evolve, have been hard at work creating this game for the past three years which is set to feature very lush and large environments filled with AI controlled wildlife. This wildlife will allegedly fall into four different categories:

  • The Sloth – Only attacks when provoked and is big as the Goliath (the name of the monster that the Hunters fight against).
  • Trap Jaws – Are weak when they are alone, but are dangerous when there’s a pack of them running around and it’s suppose to be a cross between a dog and a dinosaur.
  • Spotters – Able to emit sound if you get close to close to them, great for finding a Goliath.
  • Carnivorous Plants – Are able to devour anything that comes close to them. If a Hunter manage to get near them, they will need the help from the other Hunters to escape.

Much like the AI wildlife, the player-controlled Hunters are split into four categories; Assault, Medic, Support, Trapper.

Each come with specific weapons and abilities. But before I go on about each type of Hunter, there are a few things that all hunters share. Weapons have unlimited ammo, but are balanced by different magazine sizes and cool-down. Every hunter is equipped with a jetpack and is able to dodge by double tapping the jetpack button. Additionally, if you happen to die, you will be revived in two minutes via a drop ship and also collect loot from the special wildlife. With that out of the way, here’s what you can expect from the Hunter classes:

Markov The Assault:

  • Main focus is to deal damage and to have a personal shield.
  • Will be equipped with two guns; a long rifle for long engagements and a lighting rifle for close quarter combat. Markov will also be equipped with proximity mines.

Val The Medic:

  • Main focus is to heal and revive players.
  • Will be equipped with a Medgun capable of healing and revives, as well as a tranquilizer  capable of highligting and slowing down the monster.
  • For offensive damage, Val is able to use a sniper rifle that’s capable of doing serious damage.

Hank The Support:

  • Main focus is to improve the abilities of other classes.
  • Carries a laser cannon for calling orbital barrages, which limits the monster movements and shield projector that the others can use.

Griffin The Trapper:

  • Said to be the most advanced class.
  • Carries an Harpoon gun that’s capable of stopping the monster from moving forward. He’s also equipped with sound spikes and a submachine gun.

If for some reason none of those classes interest you, Turtle Rock has revealed that there will be more different Hunters who will have their own unique equipment. But what about that menacing monster that both the wildlife and Hunters should be on the lookout for, the Goliath?

It is said to look like a hybrid of an ape, snake and a Xenomorph. At it’s final stage (cue the “this isn’t even my final form” memes) it is said to be around 30 feet. Thankfully for both the wildlife and Hunters, the Goliath has a long way to go to get to their final form. In the beginning stages, it isn’t much of a threat, as it can only use any two of the four attacks in it’s first level (Charge Attack, Leap Attack, Rock Throw, and Fire Breath), but every time it levels up and evolves, a Goliath player can access any other attacks he or she didn’t pick initially. The Goliath is also able to perform some very basic moves such as punching, leaping over long distances, and wall climbing.

Furthermore, the only way for the Goliath to evolve is by eating the wildlife. Doing so gives it armor and when it does evolve, it will go into a cocoon state that will leave the Goliath very vulnerable. Luckily for the Hunters, they will be able to use their equipment, or the footprints left behind by the Goliath, to track it down or follow the flock of birds who will be attracted to the carcasses that the monster leaves behind. However, if the monster does manage to reach it’s final form, it receives a new objective which, upon completing it, will result in the Goliath winning the match. It can also win by eliminating the four Hunters while the Hunters win by stopping the monster.

It also appears that each match in Evolve won’t take much of your time, as GameInformer reveals that they lasted about 10 to 15 minutes at most during their play time.

Evolve will be made available on the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One platforms this fall.

Sounds really interesting so far. What are your thoughts?

Get Even “What is Real” Teaser, New Title From The Farm 51 To Meld Single Player and Multiplayer

The Farm 51 has released a teaser of their recently announced game Get Even which is set to release sometime in 2015 on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Wojtek Pazdur, CEO of The Farm 51, says, “As an independent developer, it would be foolish to go head-to-head with the larger companies and create a ‘me-too’ knock-off, and frankly we wouldn’t be interested in doing it. We believe that there is still a ton of content and design creativity that has yet to be explored in the first-person genre, as well as an audience beyond the warfare player – those are the people we are going for with Get Even.”

From the makers of Painkiller: Hell and Damnation, Deadfall Adventures and NecroVision, The Farm 51 are committed to producing a game that does away with many of the limitations of the first-person shooter genre.

Not many details of the multiplayer were teased, but the game is set to remove the classic division between single-player and multiplayer experiences to unfold two linked stories.

Currently, the game is slated for digital distribution only but may change in the future. Stay tuned to MP1st when more details arrive.

Being that the game is independently built, the look of realism achieved is stellar. What are your thoughts on the teaser so far?

DICE Devs Hint at Upcoming Battlefield 4 Updates – DMRs, Grenades, Spectator Mode, and More

With the holidays at an end, Battlefield 4 developers are back in office and are are hinting at a few upcoming tweaks that may or may not be making it into future game updates.

On Twitter, DICE multiplayer game designers Alan Kertz and Dennis Brännvall threw a few ideas out into the wild, presumably to gather feedback on a few of the items they may be looking into.

In one Tweet, for example, Kertz acknowledged the community’s desire for a few balance improvements made to designated marksman rifles, grenades, hand flared, helicopters, and more.

“Got a nice update yesterday on BF4 fixes balance and progress. The team has been busy while I was out,” he writes. “Rebalance. DMR. V40. RGO. FB. MAA. Heli. Hand Flares. Oh the humanity!”

He continued with his thoughts on grenade balance, saying, “small impact wins, looking at a smaller explosion sound and effect on the V40, to show off its a less effective grenade and reduce spam.”

“I think the V40 is a bigger issue in Hardcore than Core,” he added. “Agree?”

Meanwhile, Brännvall noted his interest in improving Battlefield 4’s spectator mode, though he mentions that updates may not happen any time soon.

“Watching @BattlefieldESL spectator feels outdated now in comparison, improvements are coming,” he said. “Mostly tweaks and removal of clutter, better flow to spectator. All in all it adds up. Casters are doing a great job though.”

“That said, I’m not working right now because my wife is close to ten months pregnant. Still watching comp bf4. #Married2Job #FixTheGame”

These are in no way official announcements of incoming Battlefield 4 fixes and tweaks, but it might give some insight as to what alterations DICE developers are currently considering.

Also, considering stability updates and bug fixes are still being rolled out, it may be a while until we see a proper balance update from developers DICE. Keep your sights on MP1st for the latest info!

Update

Battlefield 4 game designer Alan Kertz shared a few more thoughts on his Twitter account regarding helicopter and moble anti-air balance.

3 Ways Natural Selection 2 Enforces Teamwork In a Modern FPS

My biggest complaint about most multiplayer games isn’t bugs or lag, it’s the players.

The fact that there are memes devoted to players not dropping ammo or med kits in Battlefield 4 just goes to show how toxic popularity can be for multiplayer games.  Look at the Battlefield, Call of Duty, or League of Legends communities. They’re toxic and unnervingly juvenile despite the games themselves being fantastic.  But there are still a few games out there that haven’t been ruined by the masses.

[youtube id=”hp-4iaKXP68″]

Natural Selection 2 is one of those rare games that has an actual learning curve.  Not playing the tutorial matches and hoping straight into PvP games will leave you confused and frustrated, unless you ask for help.  Thankfully, I’ve never once had a question about the game go unanswered or answered with an “fu noob” in the 20 hours I’ve put into the game.  But even more importantly, my teammates always seem to be trying to play together.  Of course, not playing together is the quickest way to a loss in NS2, as coordination is the key to everything, but that’s relatively true of every team-based multiplayer game, right?  I mean, do people not know about teamwork and how easy it makes winning?  Well, if you only played NS2, you wouldn’t know this is a central problem in most multiplayer games.

So what’s the secret?  What’s NS2 and developers Unknown Worlds doing to get people playing together instead of like Johnny Rambo with a big machine gun?

1. Upgrade Rewards

If you don’t play as a team in NS2, you don’t unlock upgrades, which means you don’t do more damage over time.  Good luck getting a kill 5 or 10 minutes into a match without the weapon upgrades or resources to evolve into stronger aliens.  Without proper teamwork, not only will you lose a match in NS2, you’ll be powerless as an individual to do anything about it.  This is something no AAA developer would ever consider.  Can’t have even one player in the world not having fun or they might not buy the DLC!

2. A Single Game Mode

While there are of course a couple of variations on the core gameplay of NS2, it’s simplicity and structure is what keeps players focused on the objective.  There are no killstreaks, there is no deathmatch, it’s all for one and one for all in a fight to take down the enemy base(s).  Other games have players being pulled in 5 different direction at once with what they should be learning or doing and NS2 makes it clear that the goal is the objective and there’s not much else to do but play it.  Of course, this involves a myriad of upgrades, player roles, base types, etc., but through it all, there is the unifying thread of a singular focus that holds it all together.

3. The Badass Factor

It goes without saying that plowing through enemies wielding two machine guns or as an armored alien tank has a certain level of badassery to it that’s undeniably awesome.  That badassery is what serves as the payoff for doing well as a team in NS2.  If you work together well, you can hoard your resources and buy yourself an Exosuit or evolve into an Onos and wreak the enemy team.  Fail to work well with your teammates, and no badassery for you!  But even if you do manage one of these upgrades, you’re still fairly vulnerable to enemies swarming you, which happens very easily to careless players.

In short, Natural Selection 2 is the perfect storm of simple gameplay, strategy, and teamwork that pushes it above and beyond most other multiplayer games out there.  What it lacks in spectacle it makes up for in working damn well and having a great community of players behind it.  If you’re tired of being force fed broken games with bloated and useless DLC, think about getting NS2.  I promise if you learn the game, you’ll enjoy it just as much if not much more than the annual AAA titles floating around from the explosion of mediocrity that was 2013’s holiday season.

Have you played Natural Selection 2? What are your thoughts on the game?

Titanfall’s 6 vs 6 Player Cap “Felt Best”, Says Respawn Entertainment Studio Head [Updated]

Update

A representative of Respawn Entertainment who goes by the name “DK05” on NeoGAF wrote the following in response to player count concerns in Titanfall:

“Lots of armchair game designing going on in here. I’d suggest playing before judging a something as insignificant as a number in a vacuum.

Vince is right – we tried a huge amount of playercounts (all the way down to 1v1 and up quite high) and designed the maps, gameplay mechanics, and entire experience around which played best. If anyone wants to chase the numbers game, perhaps we’re not the experience they’re after? I dunno.

And FYI, for amount of stuff happening at once in a map you’ll be hard pressed to find a game that keeps the action higher. I literally have to stop playing every few rounds because my heart just can’t take it some times. Remember, you can get out of your Titan and let it roam on AI mode – meaning there can be 12 Pilots wallrunning around, 12 Titans stomping below, and dozens of AI doing their thing.

Oh, and I keep seeing people thinking we’ve got “bots” when we talk about AI. Thats not how they are. The AI in Titanfall are not replacements for human players. Our playercount is not 6v6 because of AI – AI play their own role in the game and are a different class of character in the game.

Can’t wait! Only a couple months until speculative threads like this are gone and people are actually talking about their experiences with the game. Its truly fun stuff, and I hope everyone at least gives it a try.”

Original Story

Responding to a recent confirmation of Titanfall‘s 6 vs. 6 maximum human player count, Respawn Entertainment studio head Vince Zampella has been busy on social media channels reaffirming the game’s fun factor, despite its smaller player capacity. Earlier, Zampella confirmed in a Twitter response that Titanfall would support only up to 12 players, including AI.

Screen Shot 2014-01-07 at 9.56.33 PM

While this was the case in previously shown demos of the title, many learning about it for the first time showed negative reactions to the news.

Screen Shot 2014-01-07 at 10.01.40 PM

He went on to explain that the number wasn’t decided upon arbitrarily, but resulted in best the experience for the title. Screen Shot 2014-01-07 at 10.05.06 PM

He also reminds fans that on top of real players and AI, there are also the Titans to consider.

Screen Shot 2014-01-07 at 10.05.23 PM

He even went as far as recommending other titles if a higher player count was your preference.

Screen Shot 2014-01-07 at 10.04.43 PM

Titanfall drops March 11, 2014 on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox 360. We recently learned the title would support “Tactical” and “Bumper Jumper” controller schemes, as well as others.

What are your thoughts on Titanfall’s 6 vs. 6 player count? Is it big enough, even after considering additional AI infantry and Titans? Let us know in the comments!

DayZ to Enter Beta Testing No Sooner Than “End of 2014”, Top Development Priorities Detailed

According to a recent blog entry from DayZ developer Bohemia Interactive, DayZ isn’t expected to shift into beta testing any sooner than the end of this year.

“We strongly advise you not to buy and play the game at this stage unless you clearly understand what Early Access means and are interested in participating in the ongoing development cycle. Please keep in mind that we do not expect to reach beta status sooner than the end of 2014,” writes the studio.

DayZ is currently open as an early access title for participants willing to test the game in its alpha state. Since its initial launch on December 18, it has gained a significant following that grows each day. As of yesterday, the title has sold more than 875,000 early access digital copies.

“The level of support and confidence we have received from the DayZ community makes us even more dedicated to the game than we were in the past 16 months of DayZ standalone development,” says Bohemia. “We’re very surprised to see such interest as this clearly is not a game for everyone.”

Meanwhile, the studio also outlined a list of items that are currently a top priority for the development team:

  • Server performance, stability and security
  • Animals & hunting
  • Cooking & gathering resources
  • Playable user customizable vehicles
  • Player created constructions in the environment
  • More complex interactions with the environment and crafting options
  • Streamlined user actions and interface
  • Control and animations expanded and improved for fluidity
  • Upgraded graphics and physics engine (including ragdoll, etc.)
  • Support of user mods and more flexibility for user hosted servers and game types

You can access DayZ on Steam for $29.99 USD.

Microsoft and Sony Reveal Sale Numbers, PlayStation 4 Outsells Xbox One

Since the announcement of the next-generation consoles in the spring of last year, the majority of gamers have been rooting for the PlayStation 4, and it looks like they’ve come out on top on the sales front, for now.

Taking to PlayStation’s Twitter, Sony has announced that they have sold a whopping 4.2 million units to date, just a day after Microsoft announced that it sold “over 3 million” Xbox Ones.

It comes at no surprise that PlayStation outsold Xbox. What does however, is the fact that Microsoft is following close behind even though it had a rocky start, it didn’t sell in as many countries, and it sells at a higher price range compared to PlayStation 4.

So what are your thoughts on this? What are your 2014 console predictions? Tell us in the comment section below!

Modders Bring Wildlife Into GTA Online

It looks like those playing Grand Theft Auto Online may have to be wary of a new mod to surface recently that could affect your game.

Thankfully, it isn’t as game-breaking as other mods to be brought into the game, like modders gifting away billions of GTA$ to everyone in their lobby. This time, some modders have found a way to bring the dangerous wild life animals featured in the single player portion of GTA V into GTA Online.

Quite frankly, it looks pretty pretty fun. Check out the video below of YouTuber HayaboostaTT and his friend getting mauled by a mountain lion:

Evolve – Sci-fi Multiplayer Shooter From Left 4 Dead Creators Announced [Updated: New Box Art]

It was revealed today that the creators behind the Left 4 Dead series, and co-developers of the Counter-Strike series, Turtle Rock Studios, are working on a next-gen shooter called “Evolved”.

cov_250_front_610

Featured in next month’s issue of GameInformer, Evolve is a four-player multiplayer shooter that pits players against a single Alien. Rather than going with the traditional Left 4 Dead approach where hoards of enemy AI swarm you and your teammates, they have opted for just one enemy this time around. It sounds a bit risky, to be honest, but according to GameInformer, the Alien is said to be controlled by a fifth player to add a competitive side to it. The Alien character will continue to increase not only in size, but also in strength and other attributes.

GameInformer stated in their February Preview, “the result is a novel mix of cooperative and competitive multiplayer elements that’s unlike anything we’ve played before. Our exclusive hands-on time with the game’s four-versus-one hunt mode left us with plenty to be excited about, and you can get all the details in this month’s issue.”

Additionally, the other player-controlled characters are known as “Hunters”. There are different classes, which are to be announced, all of them having their own unique weapons and skill sets. If you want to get the full details, be sure to check out next month’s issue of GameInformer. We’ll be sure to keep you posted on any details for the upcoming title.

The game will release on PC, Xbox One, and the PlayStation 4 this Fall.

Alien: Isolation Announcement Trailer [Updated: No Multiplayer]

UPDATE: Well, it looks like the game won’t feature any Multiplayer which means we won’t be covering it anymore. SEGA released a PR statement stating that the XBL description was an error and has since been corrected.

“There was an error in reporting earlier today about a feature of the game stating multiplayer and co-op features for Alien: Isolation. There will be no help, no solace, no escape from the Universe’s deadliest killer. Please let us know if you’d like to discuss further.”

ORIGINAL STORY: After appearing yesterday on the XBL Marketplace, today SEGA and Creative Assembly is proud to announce, Alien: Isolation.

A wonderful preview of the title by Gamespot:

From what’s been shown, it looks astounding and getting rid of the gun is definitely the right direction for this game. It is said the game will feature 4 player-co-op along with a 4 player competitive round. It’ll be interesting to see how that’s handled, considering that the gameplay is moving towards that of Outlast, or Amnesia, Slender Man. We’ll keep you posted as more multiplayer news develops.

The game is slated to release late this year.

Aliens: Isolation Appears On Xbox Live Marketplace, Will Feature Multiplayer

It seems that SEGA isn’t entirely done with the Aliens franchise as they are now in development, along with Creative Assembly, on a new title, Aliens: Isolation.

Originally rumored some time last year, along with some leaked images from Kotaku, the game now appears on the Xbox Live Marketplace after today’s update with a placeholder for the game.

“Discover the true meaning of fear in Alien: Isolation, a survival horror set in an atmosphere of constant dread and mortal danger. Fifteen years after the events of Alien, Ellen Ripley’s daughter, Amanda enters a desperate battle for survival, on a mission to unravel the truth behind her mother’s disappearance. As Amanda, you will navigate through an increasingly volatile world as you find yourself confronted on all sides by a panicked, desperate population and an unpredictable, ruthless Alien. Underpowered and underprepared, you must scavenge resources, improvise solutions and use your wits, not just to succeed in your mission, but to simply stay alive.”

The description also states that the game will feature 4 player co-op along with a possible competitive multiplayer suite that will only allow up to 4 players. It’s interesting to see such a low player count on the competitive side of MP, but if done right, it could work.

Despite being let down by the pile of garbage that Gearbox released early last year, I have hopes for this project. One day, maybe, one day, we will see another good game based on the Aliens franchise. Fingers crossed. Though if it is bad, you guys get to see me tear up yet another title.

I will say this: I am impressed with the new image that came out today of the Alien Model. Check it out.

What do you guys think? Are you down for another Aliens game?
