COD: Ghosts – Infinity Ward Can’t Push AI Development Further Until Next-Gen Hardware is Finalized

While Infinity Ward is hard at work crafting the next-generation experience of Call of Duty, development isn’t without it’s road bumps.

Studio Head Mark Rubin recently told Polygon that, when it comes to development of AI in Call of Duty: Ghosts, work can be “slower than some of the graphics.” He explained that this is due to the lack of finalized hardware for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

“Obviously we are in crazy early development and we will have to see how the consoles play out,” Rubin added.

He mentioned that the team is shooting for some very dynamic AI – enemies that will react differently depending on the situation they are in.

“They might behave differently to the dog, or behave a little differently compared to the events that are happening in the level,” Rubin explained. “They take some of the environment cues and pay attention to them. A lot of times they just kind of ignore the environment, they are just like, ‘OK this guy is supposed to be here I’m shooting, but the building is falling all over me… No, I’m still shooting you.’ So sort of doing stuff like that. It is subtle, really subtle. AI in general is one of those things [where] the subtle things are often easy to notice when it is bad.”

Infinity Ward is making “big strides” in development, but Rubin says they can’t really push things any further until they know exactly what they are working with in terms of hardware.

“We need some hardware, some finished hardware, before we can really expand,” he said.

If you’re interested to see some of the development process for Ghosts, check out this recent tech-demo:

Call of Duty: Ghosts hits next-generation hardware sometime after its release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on November 5.

Why the Xbox One Needs to be Online

At this point, it’s pretty clear that Microsoft’s PR team for the Xbox One is doing damage control.  With nearly two months of overwhelmingly negative customer feedback at their front door, spokespeople doing nothing but confusing everyone about the Xbox One’s confusing DRM and used games policies, and competitors lapping up praise for not really doing much of anything, Microsoft is feeling the pressure to change.  Unfortunately, it seems unrealistic to think they can change much about the Xbox One.

The major point of contention for the Xbox One is it’s 24-hour check in cycle.  Don’t have internet to make that daily check in with?  No Xbone for you!

[youtube id=”nP0ERIOqtzQ” width=”618″ height=”378″]

The reason Microsoft can’t remove the check in requirement is simple, it’s the only way to guarantee every Xbox One will be online.  An online Xbox One can download ads, enable netflix playback, and get customers shopping on the XBL Marketplace.  All these things are massive cash crops for Microsoft and when you throw in games requiring cloud computing to run, you have a company that has backed themselves into a corner with no way out.

The Xbox 360 Kinect wasn’t the popular device Microsoft had hoped it would be for one simple reason: Install base.  Kinect sales stagnated very quickly and this led to developers dropping support for it almost immediately.  There were no really amazing games for the Kinect and the homebrew community made better use of it than Microsoft did.  So with the Xbox One, Microsoft, in requiring both a Kinect and internet connection for every console sold, is guaranteeing to developers that any and all features possible with the Xbox One system will be available to every user.  This leads to more digital transactions which means more money per-sale which means more income for Microsoft.

Now, don’t take this the wrong way.  Microsoft is as much a capitalist company as Sony or Nintendo and there’s nothing wrong with that.  While yes, it might mean that they prioritize profits over customers, Sony at least has proven that they understand making products all their customers can use and enjoy is the best way to make a profit.

In the end, Microsoft has misjudged their customers or, at the very least, isn’t thinking of all their customers.  There are millions of Xbox 360 owners without internet that have lost their upgrade path thanks to the very company making that upgrade a reality.  While some might argue that Microsoft is doing this because it’s eventually going to become the norm, I believe they’re doing this because it’s the most profitable way to do it.  If they had taken just a little more care, I think they could have avoided this disaster of a PR campaign, but then again, removing the online requirements would make most of the Xbox One’s new features totally useless to developers.

What do you think?  Is Microsoft doing something smart by embracing the future, or is their pursuit of profit driving them to create products that millions of customers can’t use?

The Last of Us Vs. Uncharted 3 – The Best Easter Egg Comparison Yet

Yes, guys, I am still working on the multiplayer review for The Last of Us, but there’s only so much of it that I can play before the urge to play single player kicks back in.

I know normally we don’t cover things that focus on the single player of a title, but this was just way to cool to miss. If you’ve played Uncharted 3, then you’ll know the opening scene is set inside an Irish Pub. Well, it seems that after enough treasure hunting to last him fives lives, Victor Goddamn Sullivan did the unthinkable and bought his own Irish Pub set in The Last of Us Universe.

The video below shows off the pub from both games, which are nearly identical with a few differences.

[youtube id=”5wB15fkGb4M” width=”618″ height=”378″]

Pretty neat don’t you think? Oh, and our review should hopefully be up later this week with a few other surprises, hopefully.

Those of us who follow David “Vahn” Vonderharr on twitter may have noticed a bit of a tease in the form of an image he posted, showing a lone Zombie, perhaps on the map “Buried.” We assume the image shows their progression on the trailer, which we expect to be released sometime soon.

Those who are Xbox Live Gold members may have heard the good news: a recent promotion that Microsoft has revealed during their 2013 E3 conference is gifting all Xbox Live Gold members two free games per month, starting this July.

However, Microsoft seems to have started promoting early, as the Games-on-Demand version of Fable III has been recently made free for all Xbox Live Gold members earlier this week. For those limited space on their hard drive should take caution, however, as downloading Fable III will take up about 5.67 GB of space.

Battlefield 4 Interview With DICE GM and VP, Karl-Magnus Troedsson

Despite a hectic week at E3 2013, MP1st had the very fortunate chance to speak with General Manager and Vice President of DICE, the studio currently at the helm the next iteration of the highly acclaimed Battlefield franchise.

Karl-Magnus Troedsson, who could often be seen on the E3 show floor either demonstrating the newly re-introduced Commander mode or speaking with other Battlefield fans, is currently heading development on Battlefield 4 at DICE back in Stockholme, Sweden, and is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Swedish Gaming Industry.

During his brief stay in LA, he took the time to talk to us about Battlefield 4 multiplayer and more.

Karl Magnus Troedsson - General Manager DICE

MP1st: When you first sat down with the DICE team to talk Battlefield 4 multiplayer, what were the big staples or the big items that you said, “these need to be in Battlefield 4 multiplayer, or else we’re not shipping it.”

Troedsson: “It’s not a defined process, but every time we start a new project, we look at the one we did just before and say, “that was okay and that was okay, that was almost good.” We’re pretty hard on ourselves. And then there’s a long list of things that we actually feel were pretty bad. Those are usually the things we say, “either we cut them or we fix them.” But at the same time, we also strive for innovation. We always want to bring something new to the table and that might be small things or it might be big things.

Some of the bigger things that we talked about in this game was that we really wanted to bring back the commander, to expand the teamplay in the game with also having that “eye in the sky,” and as I call it, a chess-like tug-of-war going on in between [commanders]. That was definitely one of the things that we wanted to do. With that came also the idea that we want to expand that experience away from the client, if you so want to, into tablets as well – so, to create even more of this connected experience.

A lot of that is based on how we play the games ourselves. I mean, when I’m on my couch playing in front of my TV, I always have either a lap-top or a tablet next to me and I do believe that a lot of people do this. I do this when I watch TV as well. It’s very rarely that I just watch one thing. So this idea we wanted to bring to it and in there is also the idea of Battlelog. If there’s one thing we definitely said we were going to do at the beginning was to make sure that Battlelog on the consoles, this time around, is equally successful as it was on PC for BF3. The Battlelog on console for BF3 we were absolutely not happy with. We’re not going into all the details there, but it’s going to be a big overhaul going on here, and that idea also then extends to – you can use Battlelog as a widget inside your client, you can see it on top of everything, but then of course we also want people to use it on the tablet and on the go.

So those are some of the things that we really set out early on that we wanted to change. We also wanted to bring back some more amphibious assault, more water-based vehicles. We wanted to change some things in the actual “second-to-second” as we call it, you know, just the running and gunning, so anything from movement to you can sprint-swim, you can dive under the water, you can customize your sidearm – a lot of these things that when you talk to somebody that perhaps doesn’t play the game says, “eh, but that’s just small details,” but for the people that are going to spend hundreds of hours in this game, its big differences – or you can have different kinds of grenades, etc. We wanted to do quite a bit of an overhaul on the second-to-second experience.

Maybe, finally, I should bring up the whole idea of what we wanted to do with the destruction. We wanted more destruction than what we had in BF3, more in the shape of a sky scraper coming down like we have now, but also in various parts ranging from micro to the big destruction, which I think we really achieved now. We like to wrap that concept in what we call “Levolution,” which is much more than just destruction. It’s about the interactivity in the world and how the world is affected by how you play the game. It can be things like bollards coming out of the ground, or elevators being now available. You can hear people when they run through, maybe, a metal detector, so there’s a lot of that spacial awareness thing going on as well.

From the top of my head, those are a couple of the things we talked about quite early on.

There’s some changes, to the single player, as well, that we were very adamant about in the beginning. We wanted to make a single player that was less linear than the one we had in BF3, meaning that we will have parts of it where we – sometimes we call it that we brought signature multiplayer elements into the single player, meaning player choice, choice of weaponry, choice of tactic, choice if you want to use vehicles, etc. So, that’s really what we’re developing in the single player this time around.”

MP1st: So, you have commander on display at the E3 show floor and a lot of people are really excited about that. I’m curious – how does it work? How do you step into the seat of the Commander? Who has the right to get in there?

Troedsson: “Well, you can apply. From inside the game, you can just apply to be the commander and then the player with the highest rank will be selected automatically. Then you can vote to get rid of of the commander and these kind of things as well, if you don’t feel that the person is suited.”

MP1st: So, if you’re on the go with a tablet, can you sort of “matchmake” your way into a game through your mobile device?

Troedsson: “I don’t think we’re entirely done with how that’s going to work. But basically, I think you’re going to be able to browse the servers, or maybe just quick match as a commander, but I’m not entirely sure if this is all decided.”

MP1st: We’ve got to play Battlefield 4 multiplayer on the E3 2013 show floor and we’ve managed to figure out a lot of the new features you guys are bringing to Battlefield 4, but there’s a couple things that are still, sort of, mysterious to us and I was wondering if I could ask you about them.

Next to the mini-map, there’s a little green bar there with what looks like different specializations at certain benchmarks. How does that work? How does that bar fill up and what am I exactly unlocking?

Troedsson: “Well, that’s a concept that we call “Field Upgrades.” Long-lasting fans might recognize part of this concept from 2142. Basically, it’s a non-persistant upgrade system that goes for you and your squad, meaning that if you play together and you have team scoring events, you will upgrade in various tiers on this Field Upgrade list. You will unlock things like more ammo, more grenades, and various boosts that can help you and your squad. But there’s a couple of twists, that is if your squad, for instance, is wiped out, you will fall down a tier, and it’s also, as I mentioned, not persistant, so this will just be per-session, and then you have to restart. We put this in there because we really wanted people to play – be recognized for playing even more together. It’s going to be interesting to see how people use this. This then replaces the old specialization system that we had.”

MP1st: Another thing: How do the reversible knife kills work? Not a lot of people are getting into that situation to test it out on the show floor and we’re really curious to know how it works.

Troedsson: “This isn’t entirely done, but as it currently stands, if somebody comes up to you and you actually have the opportunity to see them – so there’s an element that you can actually sneak up behind somebody and they can’t counter you, as it is now. But basically, if somebody melees you, and you melee them back with the right timing, you are actually the winner instead. We know how interested people are in taking people’s dog tags, especially ours. They keep hunting us all over the internet. Very frustrating. Thank you players. So actually we implemented the feature just for our own sake [laughs]. No we didn’t. We think a lot of people are really interested in this, but sometimes it can be a bit frustrating – you know, somebody managed to just press the melee button before you and you actually want to have a chance at countering it. But currently, it’s not like it turns into a sword fight. You can counter once and if you miss, then you miss, and if you manage to do it, then you manage. It’s something I think we’re going to need to test a bit and see how it works out, but it’s definitely a feature we’re excited about.”

MP1st: To reconfirm, on the next generation platforms – so the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One – are we looking at 64 players and 60 frames-per-second?

Troedsson: “Yes, I can confirm. That is some of the most important parts of where we want to spend all this additional memory and power that we get out of the new platforms. We’ve had this experience on PC for quite some time, not being locked to 60 FPS – I better say that or the community will kill me – but we know how really visceral this experience can be when you play with so many other players and we’re really excited to bring that to next-gen consoles a well.”

MP1st: What about the current-generation? So, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3?

Troedsson: “We’ve proven so far, I would argue, that we can make really good games there as well, but they’re going to stay at 24 players and the 30 FPS rule that we’ve had before. We know that we can make really great games from that as well and in order to have all these huge, open environments with all the vehicles, all the players and all the destruction, etc., you know, that is where we land when it comes to how much power we have out of those platforms.”

As a reminder, Troedsson mentioned that when we’re talking about next-generation platforms and the PC, we’re actually talking about 66 players if you include the two commanders, or 26 on current-generation platforms.

MP1st: It might be a bit early, but a lot of people are wondering if, for example, they buy Battlefield 4 on, let’s say, the PlayStation 3, and then later on for the PlayStation 4, are they going to be able to carry over any sort of stats or unlocks?

Troedsson: “We just started having this discussion, so this is not settled yet. But we have heard that – I don’t know if this came from inside or outside of DICE – but that is being discussed. It might not be entirely up to us. We have to wait and see how first-parties see this.”

MP1st: You guys almost stole the show here at E3 2013 with some really big announcements, including the return of Mirror’s Edge 2 and Star Wars: Battlefront. I’m wondering if you can tell me when we might hear a little bit more about Battlefront?

Troedsson: “Well, we’re keeping all the secrets very tight and it’s very early on. For both of those games, it’s very early days, so people should be ready to wait for a while. But at the same time, we really wanted to bring it to the world’s attention that we are working on this because we are super excited about it as well. What I can say about the Battlefront game is that, at DICE, when we heard about this opportunity, when I talked to my boss, Patrick Söderlund, for instance – he was involved in the whole deal that EA was making, etc. – you know, he just casually brought it up and we actually asked [in a raised voice], “why haven’t you brought this up before? We absolutely want to do this. We want to work with this game.”

We actually already have a lot on our plate with everything we do, but we just felt like we need to make this work some how and that’s what we’re doing now. So, we’re very, very excited about the opportunity and, actually, the reaction from back hom in the studio, when we had our studio meeting and were told this, was quite similar to the reaction at the press conference. It was a lot like, “woooooo yeaaahh!” – you know, whooping and fist-pumping in the air, etc. So, it’s really, really cool. We’re super excited about it. Then, in combination with now that it’s the right time for us to bring back the Mirror’s Edge franchise. It makes for very exciting times.”

MP1st: What are some of the upcoming games, either announced or shown here at E3, that you’re looking forward to?

Troedsson: “Well, as a typical working at E3, I have had pretty little time to actually walk around and get hands-on. I watched The Division, which I’m really excited about from what I’ve seen. I haven’t played it myself just yet, but what I’ve seen, I think it both looks good and has an interesting concept. It’s also very cool to see another Swedish studio that’s actually from Malmö, my home town. It’s not in Stockholm but it’s another Swedish studio building that, so kudos to those guys and girls. I would like to see more from Metal Gear. That’s going to be very interesting to see that as well, see what Mr. Kojima-san can come up with. Those are some of the games I’m pretty excited about.”

MP1st: Anything else you wanted to add about Battlefield 4 multiplayer that we might have missed?

Troedsson: “There’s so many new things under the hood in that second-to-second experience that I think a lot of people will like. I tried to remember all of it but I can’t. Small things like we’re really revamping the entire suppression system. So, in close quarters fights, we actually don’t have that much suppression and suppression is actually toned down on a lot of the weapons. It’s more the LMG’s role to actually be the suppressor. Things like making carbines and DMRs for all the kits. So, we’re doing some changes there with the kits.

We have an additional feature now which is zoom-peek. So if you’re behind cover and you zoom your weapon, you automatically lean over the cover. We’re not entirely done with it just yet, but, actually, it’s testable on the floor if you want to try it out. We’re not done with it but I think that’s going to be pretty cool. I mentioned spring-swim and diving and these kind of things. Melee combat. There’s a lot of these things that are smaller details but actually get me really excited because I love to play the game as well. You know that that’s what you’re going to do over and over and over again when you play.”

Look for Battlefield 4 on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC this October 29, a little later for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

MP1st at E3 2013 – Wrap-Up, Thoughts, Impressions and Photos

With powerful new game engines and brand new hardware on the horizon, E3 2013 was filled with glimpses of the next-generation of gaming. It was a big year that included a ton of mouth-watering announcements that would make any geek do the Harlem Shake.

Luckily enough, I was fortunate enough to attend this year’s events and got to witness a ton of upcoming goodies and play a number of amazing new titles.

Here are a list of all the titles I was able to either get some hand-on time with, or witness behind-closed-doors demonstrations of while at E3 2013, including some thoughts and impressions.

After giving it a read-through, I want to know what some of your stand-out moments of E3 2013 were. Share them in the comments below!

Let’s get to the games.

Arma 3

I wish some of my more PC-dedicated staff had the chance to get their hands on the Arma 3 demo on the E3 show floor, as my background primarily lies in console shooters. But that’s not to say that I didn’t absolutely love it.

arma3_e32013_screenshot_01

Knowing fully well what the Arma series is all about, I knew that engaging enemies in this hardcore, tactical FPS could not be taken as lightly as some of the encounters you might find in games like Call of Duty or Battlefield. Keeping that in mind, getting into my first firefight was truly exhilarating. The realism in the way my soldier moved, the way he shifted between various stances, and the way he handled his weapon all made for one of the most authentic military experiences I’ve ever experienced.

During their stay at E3 2013, Bohemia Interactive announced that Arma 3 would be entering beta testing this June 25 and will include new scenarios that will include a co-op and multi-team wave defense situations.

If you’re a PC gamer at heart, I definitely suggest staying tuned to learn more about the upcoming beta.

Battlefield 4

Of course I played Battlefield 4! Twice, actually. I’d tell you what I thought about it here, but why not get my full, in-depth impressions right here?

I will say, however, that I was entirely impressed by the simple fact that DICE even had Battlefield 4 multiplayer playable on the show floor, despite it still being early in the development process. So, kudos to them.

You can check out the multiplayer briefing shown to all players before participating in 64-player battles on the show floor, including two commanders.

Battlefield 4 will drop on the current-gen Xbox and PlayStation, as well as PC October 29, later on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Call of Duty: Ghosts

I got to preview Call of Duty: Ghosts before the happenings of E3 2013 during a special “All Access” event. Similarly to above, you can catch everything that went down right here, including this tech-demo below.

[youtube id=”tZgXfCpnx3M” width=”618″ height=”378″]

Surprisingly to me, I feel that Infinity Ward went with a less action-packed gameplay reveal, and instead, focused on the story, theme, and general tone of the game, which is much, much darker this time around. On the other hand, I’m also not that surprised, considering writer/director Stephen Gaghan’s involvement with the project.

Of course, we got to meet Riley the dog and saw how he will play a role in your squad. IW showcased a stealthy mission using him as a point man (or dog) and we also got to see some under water gameplay, which, again, showed off the more stealthy elements of the game.

While what we did see sure looked fantastic for a Call of Duty game, I’m itching to see some more action packed sequences and to learn more about how some of the new features like sliding and leaning might make a difference in Call of Duty’s gameplay.

Naturally, I’m also very anxious to see some multiplayer, but as studio head Mark Rubin said, that probably won’t happen until August.

Call of Duty: Ghosts hits current-gen consoles and PC November 5, later on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Command & Conquer

Victory Games, the mind behind the remake of the classic RTS, gave me a behind-closed-doors, hands-on experience with Command & Conquer on the PC.

Being a complete RTS noob (a few matches of Warcraft 3 and StarCraft is the entirety of my RTS gaming history), I still had tons of fun with C&C. It was really simple to pick up, yet it sounds like Victory Games is ensuring tons of depth at the same time. It also looks very pretty, utilizing the power of DICE’s Frostbite technology.

The guys at Victory stressed that C&C is very much a “live” service, meaning that when the game ships, that’s not the end. The team plans to bring new content and updates consistently throughout the game’s life cycle, so you’re looking at a game that will just keep getting better and better.

The free-to-play title will be entering beta testing soon, so be sure to sign up here.

Dead Rising 3

The biggest sellers about this zombie sequel is it’s giant, completely open world with no loading screens, hoards of zombies, and the ability to use anything and everything as a weapon, according to developers Capcom Vancouver.

Dead Rising 3

It also helps that this Xbox One exclusive is getting proper SmartGlass support, which you can use as a navigation device, or to call in ordinance to help you out, on top of a number of other cool things.

Also, you better hope your mom doesn’t yell at you to do the dishes while playing Dead Rising 3, as zombies will pick up on any loud noises you make (also to be used as a distraction) thanks to the Kinect, if you so choose to add that functionality, that is.

Dead Rising 3 is expected to release later this year.

Destiny

At last, Bungie sheds a little more light on their mythic, science-fiction, shared-world FPS, Destiny, to tell us what the game is all about and to show us what it looks like in action.

Their E3 2013 demo consisted of a small co-op exploration mission through a dark tunnel that later turns into a full on public event that has additional fire teams working together to take out some really big baddies in a more open-ended environment. We got a look at a few class abilities, how looting and equipment works, and finally, how the party system works. Best of all, we finally got to see what combat looks like, and it’s pretty awesome.

We can’t wait to learn more about destiny, including more about the game’s social aspects. Until then, check out the E3 2013 demo below.

Destiny hits all Xbox and PlayStation consoles, current and next, some time next year.

The Elder Scrolls Online

Playing The Elder Scrolls Online basically felt like a typical World of Warcraft experience, but wrapped in The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim’s user interface. In both senses, it was very familiar, which you may find good or bad.

Either way, the interface was simple to use, and being a bit of an MMO noob, It was really easy to pick up. If you’ve played any Elder Scrolls game, then you basically know how to play The Elder Scrolls online. I quickly learned how to customize my character, edit his skills, take on quests, and do well in combat. Customization was very liberal, allowing me to equip whatever I wanted, just like the original games. Of course, this maybe covers not even 5% of the game in its entirety, but it seems like its off to a good start, so far.

One thing that stood out to me was the music, which brought back memories of my days endlessly exploring Skyrim.

Check out the brand new trailer below that also debuts first-person exploration and combat and be sure to sign up for The Elder Scrolls Online beta right here.

The Elder Scrolls Online is coming to PC, Mac, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 Spring 2014.

The Evil Within

The Evil Within marks the return the master of horror, Shinji Mikami, director of the original Resident Evil, and boy, is it scary.

The Evil Within

Unlike more modern “survival-horror titles,” The Evil Within features some truly horrific creatures that hunt and stalk you in extremely claustrophobic environments with little resources.

It was surprisingly refreshing to see a return to horror roots during the demo, featuring main protagonist, Detective Sebastian, trying escaping a sadistic, torturous situation in the dark, underground chambers of mental hospital.

As for the gameplay, expect familiar Resident Evil 4-style movement and shooting, but with the horror turned up to 11.

The Evil Within comes to haunt you sometime next year on the PC as well as the current- and next-gen Xbox and PlayStation.

Need for Speed: Rivals

Visually, Need for Speed: Rivals was one of the more impressive titles I had the pleasure of going hands-on with. This game is truly beautiful, not in a photorealistic way like Grand Turismo, but when it comes to lighting, weather effects, and the gorgeous scenery, Rivals is a sight for sore eyes.

Ghost Games is keeping more of the same open-world feel of the previous Need for Speed from Criterion games, Most Wanted. However, the studio is placing a much larger emphasis on cops vs. racers. You’ll get to play as either and rank up both sides, using special abilities like EMP’s or spike-strips.

In the demo we played, racers were tasked with collecting points by performing crazy stunts or winning races, while the cops’ purpose was to bust the racers before they could dump all their points in to a safe house.

While, initially, you aren’t actually “racing,” you can easily initiate one between yourself and any other players, both real and AI, with the simple click of a button. Of course, winning one of these races it a great way to earn a bunch of bonus points. This is how Ghost Games’ “AllDrive” technology blurs the lines between single player and multiplayer.

Check out some of the latest E3 2013 gameplay footage.

[youtube id=”Zph2UL09tLM” width=”618″ height=”378″]

Need for Speed: Rivals races to the PC, as well as to the current- and net-gen PlayStation and Xbox November 19.

Titanfall

Clearly, a lot of FPS geeks have the hots for this guy right here. But when you know the creators behind the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series are at the helm of this project, you have every right to be.

Titanfall is a multiplayer-based FPS set in the far future where jetpack-wielding infantry and giant mech robots face off in intense, fast-paced battle.

If you haven’t checked out the premier gameplay, be sure to do so. It’s pretty darn awesome. You’ll see a lot of familiar mechanics that are present in almost every multiplayer FPS, but the gameplay takes a turn in a much different direction.

Not only can you call upon the aid of a giant mech to either pilot or command as a friendly companion, but even infantry with their ability to jetpack and scale walls quickly, along with devastating weaponry, can make for aggressive opponents that are not to be underestimated.

Studio head Vince Zampella told us that much effort was put into making sure the gameplay was crazy-fun, but completely balanced on all fronts at the same time.

Check out the demo below.

[youtube id=”z5sqPxbLmIU” width=”618″ height=”378″]

Titanfall is set for a 2014 release on the Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC.

Wolfenstein: The New Order

Developers Machine Games are putting an over-the-top, yet more emotional spin on Wolfenstein this holiday season.

The demo we were shown began with some of the more intense dialogue that will be experienced in during your play through, reminding me of some of the nail-biting scenes from Quentin Tarantino’s film, Inglorious Bastards. The main protagonist, B.J. Blazkowicz, even has his own bit of over-the-top dialogue here and there that really adds to the playfulness of this Nazi-killing shooter set in an alternative 1960’s.

Speaking of Nazi’s, there are a ton of them to kill and a ton of weapons to do it with.

The second half of the demo showed off some of the crazy, sci-fi weaponry you’ll be able to use to tear the heads off giant Nazi robots with. There’s plenty of action to be had in this modern take of a classic shooter.

Wolfenstein: The New Order hits all Xbox and PlayStation consoles, current and next, this December.

World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition

World of thank, an originally PC-exclusive, is soon making its Xbox 360 debut.

We got to sit down with developers Wargaming to talk about tanks – different kinds of tanks, how to blow up tanks and how not to get your tank blown up. It’s a simple minded, fun-filled title that can get very competitive and in-depth at the same time.

With the studio’s free-to-win philosophy, upgrades are earned, not purchased, though you can get better quality tanks by purchasing in game gold. The thing is, if you buy yourself a better tank, matchmaking will hook you up with better players who have similar tanks, so you’re not always doing yourself a favor.

Of course, all tanks (all five different classes of them) are authentically re-created to be historically accurate, and each one can be researched to customize and upgrade differently.

With the Xbox 360 Edition, Wargaming promises a better UI for console play and tuned controls.

Battlefield 4 Alpha Trial Starts Tomorrow, PC Spec Requirements Detailed

Those who have been patiently waiting on the alpha testing stages of DICE’s latest FPS, Battlefield 4, to get underway won’t have to wait much longer. Invites to the Battlefield 4 alpha are being sent now, with the full alpha trial going live tomorrow.

According DICE dev ‘TheBikingViking,’ those who didn’t receive an alpha invite yet should not expect one coming their way anytime soon, as there’s only going to be one batch of alpha trial invites going around for BF4. Those who did get accepted, your invitation should be in your inbox now.

Of course, since this is an alpha trial, don’t expect any of the mind-blowing quality visuals that we saw during the E3 2013 event. Most textures outside of soldiers and vehicles would be incomplete, as shown in the leaked alpha photos that surfaced not too long ago.

He also notes that this is a ‘white-box’ alpha trial which is meant to test server related issues to insure that come the official launch of the game, it’ll be smooth as possible, and of course to gather gameplay feedback from those luckily enough to play the trial.

For the alpha trial PC specs requirements, check out the list below:

  • OS: Vista SP2, Win7 (Win8 not supported)
  • 64 bit (32 bit not supported)
  • Dx10 or Dx 11 GPU with 1+GB of RAM, Dx 11 highly recommended
  • 25GB HDD free space required
  • Latest Origin version required

Battlefields 4’s alpha trial is expected to last up to 14 days, meaning the cut-off date for the alpha trial is July 1.

You can get your hands on Battlefield 4 this fall on October 29, for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with next-generation consoles’ release date to be announced in the near future.

First-Party Microsoft Games To Retail At 60 USD, Xbox One Bans Result in Lost Game Licenses [Updated]

Update

Contrary to the statements made by Xbox Support, Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb stated in a recent video interview with RedditGames that users will “Absolutely Not” lose access to their games should they be banned, by fault of theirs or not. It seems there may be conflicting reports on the matter.

Recently a Microsoft representative spoke to Polygon, confirming the prices of first-party games for the Xbox One, which is set to launch sometime this November at $499 USD.

The Microsoft representative revealed that Microsoft Studio games will indeed cost $60 USD, which is currently the standard price for all Xbox 360 games. As for third party developers or publishers, no information has been revealed yet on the cost of their games, but we’ll make sure to keep you guys updated.

In additional news, Microsoft’s Xbox Support Twitter account recently revealed some interesting news regarding bans and game licensing. They stated that “If your account is banned, you also forfeit the licenses to any games that have licenses tied to it as listed in the ToU.”

Do you agree with Microsoft’s policy on losing the licenses to all of your games, if banned? Let us know us your take on the situation below.

Battlefield 4 – Carrying Stats and Unlocks From Current- to Next-Gen Consoles “Is Being Discussed” at DICE

With the uncertainty of exact release dates for Microsoft and Sony’s next-generation of gaming consoles, many hardcore console gamers are forced to consider purchasing their favorite AAA blockbuster hits like Call of Duty or Battlefield twice this fall: once for either the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, and then once again at a later date for the Xbox One or PlayStation 4.

For example, when Battlefield 4 first launches this October 29, it will only be available for the current-generation systems and PC. So, as a huge fan of the game, what do you do? Buy it on only one platform and skip the next-gen version, skip the current-gen version and wait for the next-gen release, or just buy both?

For some, the latter is an option, but for others, it’s out of the question. But for those who are planning on making the double purchase, will their stats, unlocks, ranking, and other things of the sort carry over from one console to the next?

I recently asked DICE General Manager and Vice President Karl-Magnus Troedsson this very question while I caught up with him at E3 2013.

Expecting a flat-out no, he told me that the studio actually “…just started having this discussion, so this is not settled yet. But we have heard that – I don’t know if this came from inside or outside of DICE – but that is being discussed.”

He added, however, that the decision might not be within their power to make. “It might not be entirely up to us,” he said. “We have to wait and see how first-parties see this.”

So, it looks like we’ll have to wait for a more clear answer down the road, perhaps once Microsoft and Sony are closer to the final versions of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

We want to ask you, are you going to be making the double purchase, or are you only going to be sticking to one version of the game? If so, which version? Let’e hear it in the comments below!

Learn more about Battlefield 4 multiplayer here, and be sure to stick around for our full interview with Karl-Magnus Troedsson.

DICE Is Too Busy for Battlefield: Bad Company 3, But Could Find Talent Elsewhere

DICE, the Stockholm-based studio and masterminds behind the Battlefield franchise are up to their neck in next-generation projects.

Not only will they be kicking Battlefield 4 out the door this October 29, but they recently announced the return of Faith in Mirror’s Edge 2 as well as a reboot of the beloved Star Wars: Battlefront franchise during this year’s E3.

That leaves little room for the return of everyone’s favorite Battlefield spin-off series, Bad Company.

“Right now, I would not say we have the bandwidth to do it at the DICE studio in Stockholm,” DICE executive producer Patrick Bach recently told IGN.

He did, add, however, “We can always find talented people around the world,” which might come from other studios within EA’s circle, or even from the newly announced DICE LA studio.

As for the Bad Company series, Bach explains, “We merged the Battlefield main game with Bad Company, and we’ll continue to do it. I won’t say we’ll never build another Bad Company game, but right now we’re focusing on Battlefield 4.”

If you missed it, be sure to check out our first impressions of Battlefield 4 multiplayer and stay tuned for our interview with DICE GM and VP, Kar-Magnus Troedsson.

EA Shuts Down Medal of Honor Developers Danger Close

While EA still does have future plans for the Medal of Honor series, it seems that those plans will be going on without the help of its most recent developers, Danger Close.

In an interview with Eurogamer, EA Games executive Patrick Söderlund confirmed that the studio had been dismantled, with some of the employees either working in other areas of EA, including the new DICE LA studio, or just gone entirely.

“Danger Close as it was doesn’t exist anymore,” Söderlund said. “There are people who left LA, people who work with DICE LA, and there are some who work in other parts of EA, as always when something gets dismantled.”
Despite not liking their recent entries, it would be been neat to see their talents applied else where, or in studios like DICE LA.
