Tom Clancy’s The Division Is An Always-Online Title

Despite not needing your friends to play Tom Clancy’s The Division, you’ll still be required to always be connected online at all times.

This is somewhat surprising in light of the recent news of the Xbox One getting rid of the function, and the fact that Ubisoft are working on multiple open-world titles that don’t require an internet connection at all times.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Alain Corre, Executive Director at Ubisoft Europe, confirmed that both the Division and The Crew will be always-online titles. He went on to explain that the reasoning for The Division is that the world is like a living place.

The Division will be always-online, because this is how the game is designed. It’s a world that’s always on and always living. The fact you’re always-online is a must. It’s the same for The Crew. You can join your friends or not, but something is happening in this world all the time.

When you have freedom in a world – that can also have seamless multiplayer – that brings something new to the gamer, rather than having a scripted story. Freedom brings something unique.
There have been open-worlds before, but I think the feeling you have when you play an open-world is second to none. And now we’re pushing all of our creators to go in that direction.

What do you guys think about The Division and The Crew being always online titles, given the fact that we have other titles like Watch_Dogs that don’t require a connection?

Xbox One Interview With Craig Flannagan: The Cloud and Kinect – “That Gives You Opportunity”

During the hustle and bustle of E3 2013, I had the chance to sit down with Craig Flannagan, Microsoft Director of Marketing, to talk about some of the Xbox One‘s more unique features: The Cloud and the Kinect.

THE CLOUD

Being introduced to the new generation of console gaming is cloud computing. The Cloud, as Microsoft calls it, will open up a number of possibilities for game developers. We’ve already learned how developers Respawn Entertainment are going to utilize the Xbox One’s Cloud to host dedicated servers, and even offload some of the game’s data to provide a better, smoother experience.

I asked Flannagan for his take on how The Cloud will improve gaming on the Xbox One.

“The cloud is a really important part of it,” he reassured. “Xbox One is going to be the best place to play games and a big reason for that is that games come alive because of the cloud. So, the game that you get on that first day is going to change. It’s going to be a different game. It’s going to evolve, have living worlds, worlds that change, worlds that persist. What we’re doing is we’re giving developers a palette so they can create games they wouldn’t be able to create anywhere else.”

“From an Xbox Live standpoint, [you’ll have] the ability to play your games anywhere. Anywhere you go, you can sign in and all your games are there. With game DVR and Upload Studio, [you’ll have] the ability to capture your multiplayer moments, good or bad, epic wins or epic fails, edit them up, and share them out. Those are the social features of the cloud and what’s going to make games different and only available on Xbox One.”

“We’re just at the beginning. We’re a day and a half into this [at the time] and there’s so much more to come, but we’re already seeing the promise of games that you’ll only be able to find on Xbox One because we’re the only one giving those developers the tools to do that.”

THE KINECT

When it comes to the Xbox 360, the Kinect was a bit of a hit-and-a-miss. Not every 360 gamer had one in their household, and therefor, developers were constantly faced with the question, ‘do we use up resources to create an experience centered around a device that not everyone owns?’

While every Xbox One is going to come packed with the newest version of the Kinext, making things a bit clearer for game developers, Microsoft doesn’t want to shove it down your throat and have you waving and yelling at your TV non-stop for the rest of your gaming life time.

“I think you’re going to continue to see experiences that are predominantly Kinect, that include Kinect, and some that are mostly controller-based,” Flannagan explained. “We’ll continue to give consumers choice and, really, creators choice. The fun part, from a creator’s standpoint, for us, is that every Xbox One comes with a Kinect. There’s that toolset we’re giving developers that’s just awesome. Every Xbox One’s going to come with a Kinect, every Xbox One is going to be connected to The Cloud. That gives you opportunity. There’ll be a lot more to come on Kinect games as well.”

Borderlands 2 – No Gear-Up Weekend For DLC 4, But Expect Other ‘Goodies’ In The Coming Weeks

Vault hunters awaiting news about the typical gear-up weekend which usually celebrates the release of a future DLC for Borderlands 2 may be saddened to know that Gearbox won’t be putting the event on this time.

According to the community manager over at Gearbox, Chris F., it’s because the studio was trying something new with the release of Tiny Tina’s Assault On Dragon’s Keep, but the timing, unfortunately, didn’t work out as planned. These things take weeks or months to properly prepare for, he says.

Although details for the studio does have in store for Borderlands 2 fans are scarce, Chris F. did reveal that they have prepared other ‘goodies’ which are set to appear in the upcoming weeks.

Additionally, Gearbox also recently released a trailer of the first five minutes of Tiny Tina’s Assault On Dragon’s Keep. Though the footage is rather old, this time around, it doesn’t have commentary on it like the past video. Check it out below:

Titanfall – Zampella Explains Absence Of Single Player Campaign, Won’t Be Competing With Call Of Duty

Titanfall, the highly anticipated shooter from the creative minds of the Modern Warfare franchise, will not be implementing a single player campaign, according to Respawn Entertainment studio head, Vince Zampella.

“For us, we’re a small startup studio,” Zampella said, speaking to Game Industry. “We’re 60-some developers. So for us to be able to focus on one platform [helps]. For us it was really helpful to focus on the core game and what’s fun. It’s scoped more adequately to what we have the power to do as a start-up studio.”

“We make these single-player missions that take up all the focus of the studio, that take a huge team six months to make, and players run through it in 8 minutes,” he added. “And how many people finish the single-player game? It’s a small percentage. It’s like, everyone plays through the first level, but 5 percent of people finish the game. Really, you split the team. They’re two different games. They’re balanced differently, they’re scoped differently. But people spend hundreds of hours in the multiplayer experience versus ‘as little time as possible rushing to the end’ [in single-player]. So why do all the resources go there? To us it made sense to put it here. Now everybody sees all those resources, and multiplayer is better. For us it made sense.”

Although, Titanfall won’t include a single player campaign. It will feature some sort of narrative that can be accessed through the multiplayer mode, Zampella revealed.

Additionally, he also stated the following on why Titanfall won’t be competing against the Call Of Duty franchise; “We’re going for something different. We’re not gunning for Call of Duty. We’re doing our thing. The important thing is to make sure what we’re doing is fun. I’m OK with Call of Duty being big. I helped create it, so I’m proud to see it’s something so big that it goes beyond me.”

Titanfall will be released on the Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC sometime the Spring of 2014. Though it’s release date is rather far off, you can catch the first glimpse of Titanfall in action right here.

PSA – Some PlayStation 3 Users Unable to Boot Up Console After Latest Update [Updated]

As a word of caution, a number of PlayStation 3 users are reporting some serious issues after downloading the latest 4.45 firmware update.

According to posters on the official PlayStation 3 support forum, some users are unable to boot up their PlayStation 3 after downloading the update. Others experiencing the same issue have tried restoring file systems, but to avail. So far, it is said to be affecting most users with upgraded hard drives.

According to PlayStation’s official Twitter account, the latest update improved trophy notification options and system stability. Not for all folks, it looks like.

While we wait for official word from Sony, we recommend skipping the update, for now. We’ll make sure to update when we learn more.

Update 3

PlayStation Europe has announced that “A new system software update is planned to be released on June 27 that resolves the issue.”

Update 2

According to reddit user LolBurn, following these steps will alleviate a “bricked” PS3 that was affected by the update.

“you can fix it yourself. to do this, boot into safe mode and re-update the firmware. to access safe mode (i didn’t know it existed until this): power off the ps3, then hold down the power on key until the system has powered up three times. do not release the power key until the third power up. the 1st power up is normal mode (which is broken), the 2nd is video reset mode (which won’t help) but the 3rd will bypass the broken firmware and let you re-update. sony gets bad marks for releasing an incompletely tested firmware update, but kudos for having the safe mode which saves you having to send it in and them from being sued.”

Update 1

For the time being, Sony has taken the system software update (version 4.45) offline as they have found it “caused the XMB to not display on a small number of PS3 systems.” They will announce when it is rereleased.

Thanks, Joystiq and BattleChatterOnline

Understanding the Internet Troll

As a reader of gaming websites such as MP1st, or any other online forum for that matter, you are more likely than not familiar with the “Internet Troll,” an individual that “flame baits” others into argumentative conversations on various comment threads while hiding behind nearly complete anonymity.

A recent presentation by Acedemic Earth looks into the psychology of the Internet Troll and provides significant insight on the topic. We highly recommend checking it out below.

Created by AcademicEarth.org

“We all behave differently when alone. Anonymity frees us from a perceived obligation to act in accordance with certain social norms,” writes the author. “Anonymity makes all the difference, and unfortunately, this frees some to partake in some pretty egregious behavior. This is particularly true online. We’re 20 years into the experiment of the World Wide Web, and we can clearly see how Internet anonymity plays out across social media, chat rooms, and comment sections.”

What are your thoughts on the Internet Troll? Have ever participated in ‘troll-ish’ behavior? Have you ever been a victim of severe trolling?

Check Out Diablo 3 Running On The Xbox 360, Console Versions Will See Numerous Tweaks

Having already given you a glimpse of Diablo 3, the fastest selling PC game of 2012, running on the PlayStation 3, the folks from Blizzard are finally showing off the popular dungeon crawler running on the Xbox 360.

Check out the video below:

[youtube id=”MNU3S5sC4aM” width=”618″ height=”378″]

The console version of Diablo 3 will feature significant changes and additions to the game, but will also be removing the auction house completely, due to the feedback of the PC community who’ve essentially deemed it unnecessary and a hindrance to the way the game works.

Additionally, you can also expect to see some changes in the area of crafting. Crafting now has a better chance of returning higher quality, more targeted items. Items will drop less, but those items that are dropped will be of higher quality.

Speaking of items, the Diablo 3 console version will also ensure that any items found will be geared to the class that you are currently playing as.

Those worrying how exactly Diablo 3 will play compared to it’s PC counterpart, with the ability to map multiple functions on the keyboard, can rest at ease. Blizzard is making it possible to quick-equip items via the d-pad and is also adding an evade feature, which can be used to quickly get out of harm’s way by just by flicking the right thumbstick.

Diablo 3 is set to launch on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this September 3, with the PlayStation 4 release date to be announced in the near future. Pre-ordering Diablo 3 will also net you the ‘Infernal Helmet,’giving your character an in-game XP boost.

No Always-Online DRM Doesn’t Fix the Xbox One

At this point, I think everyone is shaking their heads in confusion and frustration.  One minute, Don Mattrick is telling people to buy Xbox 360’s, the next he’s saying the Xbox One needs to be improved and they’re changing key policies to make it better.

Frankly, whoever’s running the Xbox One ship at Microsoft is screwing up big time.  How do you screw up the launch of something people have been begging for since 2010?  How do you present something in such a complex way that news outlets like ours and others have to explain what you can and cannot do with the hardware you’re releasing?  Shouldn’t the Xbox One be exactly what we’ve been asking for and easy for everyone to use?  Isn’t that the core philosophy behind the idea of a console?

Well, if you’re Microsoft, apparently not so much.

[youtube id=”ar64VnJBfsE” width=”618″ height=”378″]

I will give Microsoft credit for sucking it up and changing their DRM strategy.  It’s the right move and it’s rare for a company as big as Microsoft to reverse their decisions like this.  So in that regard, Good Guy Microsoft.  However, the good doesn’t come without the bad.  In removing the always-online requirement for the Xbox One, Microsoft also removed the ability to share your game library with up to ten people.  This was a huge selling point of the Xbox One for me.  It was the one thing as a gamer that set it above the PS4 and made it a competitor to the PC market (just slightly, mind you).  Now that it’s gone, there goes the Xbox One’s competitive edge from a “this device can do this and others like it can’t” perspective.  Granted, buying a console should be a choice informed by both hardware features and games.  But the fact remains that Microsoft isn’t working with a unified strategy in mind.

What Microsoft desperately needs to do is stop talking about the Xbox One.  They need to gather their people and figure out what makes the Xbox One good and bad and what customers want out of it.  They need to stop having 10 different PR people saying 3 different things about every feature/restriction of the Xbox One.  And most importantly, they need to make a unified strategy that fixes all the issues people have been talking about for two months, and keeps the features that we like.

In short, this is what Microsoft needs to do to make the Xbox One something I’d even considering buying:
No always-online DRM, which they’ve done
The ability to share your game library
Make the Kinect the optional peripheral it is

Now, if the only way to enable game sharing is to have the always-online DRM for users that want to share/use shared games is the way to make it possible, I’m ok with that, provided it’s not required for anything else or at the very least disk-based games.

As far as the Kinect goes, I get that Microsoft is trying to make it a uniform thing that every developer can utilize for all their games, but the fact that it’s required and inflates the price of the Xbox One despite being non-essential is just unacceptable to me.

Regardless of what Microsoft does, they have a long road ahead of them before they can even begin to overcome the negative press they created for themselves over the past 2 months.

What do you think?  Is this reversal of policy, but removal of a key feature, make the Xbox One more or less attractive a product?

Destiny To Feature Private Loot Streams, All Acquired Loot Meant For Your Character

Destiny, the upcoming shared-world shooter by Bungie, creators of the Halo series, seeks to fix many issues that loot-based games such as Borderlands 2 have been plagued with.

For example, Bungie wants to do away with “loot ninjas” stealing all the rare loot and acquiring loot that’s not meant for your character class, which makes “farming” for certain items much more tedious.

Speaking with Polygon last week at this years E3 event, Pete Parsons, COO of Bungie, Revealed that players working together won’t have to fight over any of the loot that enemies drop in Destiny. Instead it is shared by everyone and each player will have an equal opportunity to claim it. They call it “private loot streams.”

Additionally, you can expect the loot in Destiny to follow a ranked system, and players will be able build and their weapons over time. If you’re worried about the weapons featured in Destiny to just be bland, the folks over at Bungie have been working hard at making each weapon special and to create interesting character classes that players can dig deep into, according to Parsons.

Those who might be worried about weapon balances, Parsons revealed, “We have a set number of weapons [and we] balance each and every one of them, including all of [the] achievements, it’s just a huge amount of work”

Although Destiny does not have a set release date, you can get view the first gameplay glimpses of it now. Destiny will be available on the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One platforms.

EA Will Not Resurrect The Online Pass Following Recent Xbox One Policy Changes

Despite Microsoft’s decision to back-pedal with the Xbox One’s used games policies and online requirements, publishing company Electronic Arts will not resurrect the online passes for any of their games.

EA first revealed that they were to due away with the unpopular online passes back in May, in response to fan feedback. You can read all about it here.

Speaking with Polygon, senior director of corporate communications John Reseburg said in response to Microsoft dropping it’s DRM that “[There is] no change to our decision to discontinue Online Pass. It is dead.”

Additionally, Reseburg added, “As we said a few weeks ago, none of our new EA titles will include online pass, and we are removing it from existing games as well. Nothing else on today’s news, but did want to be clear that our online pass decision was based on player feedback, and there’s no change.”

Are you guys thrilled about EA and Microsoft having a change of heart when it comes to unpopular policies? Let us know in the comment section below.

Microsoft Back-Pedals on Xbox One Online Requirements and Used Games Policy

According to official reports from Microsoft, it seems that the company is back-pedalling on their initial used games policy and online requirements.

President Don Mattrick wrote in an update today, “Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One.”

He added, “You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world.”

In response to such feedback, Microsoft will be making the following changes to the Xbox One console:

  • An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games– After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.
  • Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

In addition, gamers will also be allowed play downloaded titles offline and Xbox One games will be playable with no regional restrictions. Games can also be shared as they are today, just as downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold.

Lastly, disc-based games will require that the disc be in the actual tray, as is the case with the current Xbox 360.

Well, who saw that one coming? Tell us what you think in the comments below. Was is a smart move to back-pedal in such a manner, or should Microsoft have stuck to their guns?

Rumor – Xbox One’s Low Pre-Order Allotment Due to Ongoing Production Issues, Downclocking GPU (Update)

Microsoft has previously assured gamers that the Red Ring of Death issue will not reoccur in the Xbox One, but they may be taking extra precaution to fulfill their promise, according to a report.

STFUAndPlay, who previously leaked Evolution Studios was working on a next-gen racer for launch, claims two anonymous sources from Microsoft stated the Xbox One GPU will be under-clocked between 100 – 200mhz. The issue at hand is the new APU, which contains both the CPU and GPU on one dye, is generating more heat than anticipated. Instead of scrapping units already produced, Microsoft has reportedly opted for a GPU under-clock in order to get the system temperature to suitable levels that won’t result in hardware failure. Reportedly, the hope from Microsoft is that this will help remedy low yields in production so that there won’t be any shortage of consoles this fall. Because of the GPU under-clocks, developers may be forced to disable certain features such as AA and AF or lower the resolution in order to boost the frame rate.

Although this remains a rumor at the moment, a recent report about Gamestop’s Xbox One pre-orders may lend some credibility to it. According to internal e-mails, Gamestop has stopped taking in-store pre-orders for the Xbox One. These e-mails also state that each Gamestop location was allocated a mere 16 Xbox One units while the PS4 was allocated 60 units per store. Gamestop stores may resume taking pre-orders for the Xbox One in the future, but it appears they won’t be for quite some time, if ever again.

We have reached out to Microsoft for comment.

Thanks, Polygon and STFUAndPlay

Update: Vice President of Microsoft Studios Phil Spencer has commented on the matter:

@Airgangstarr No yield problems.

A little bit of light was shed on how partial game downloads will be handled. The player in the video was given the option of first downloading either the single-player portion or the multi-player portion of Killzone: Shadowfall. For those who want to hop online as quickly as possible, this should be a great option.

Playback of user recorded videos was also displayed. With a push of a button, you can view videos your friends have recorded. Once your done watching, just push a button to resume gameplay seamlessly.

Sony also seems to have a fairly capable mobile app as well. Similar to some of the features found in Xbox Smartglass, you’ll now be able to message friends and queue downloads from PSN to your PS4 all on your mobile phone. An updated keyboard was also added to PS4 which features word-completion to make typing messages as fast and easy as possible.

What do you think of the interface and features of the PS4? Excited to try the video sharing features? Let us know in the comments below.
