What SimCity Can Teach Publishers and Developers About DRM

There’s a reason everyone who bought Diablo III nearly broke their keyboards on launch night and it’s the same thing that pissed thousands of gamers off with SimCity’s debacle of a launch.  Always-online DRM (Digital Rights Management).  In a nutshell, developers and publishers have seen how much of their profits have been eaten by torrenting and they’ve gotten their panties in a twist trying to figure out a solution.  The thing they’re forgetting is that when it comes to cyber-security, the hackers will always win.  The reason for this is simple, no matter how big the wall, the sky is always above it.

Rather than trying to blot out the sun like Mr. Burns did, publishers like EA should be supporting indie developers that can make cheap and good games (wink wink, Minecraft) for sale in addition to $60+ AAA titles.  Throw in free-to-play games, and all of the sudden the reasons to avoid paying for games becomes less about cost and more about whether or not the game is worth downloading.

Yeah, pirates will always be raping and pillaging on the information superhighway so long as there’s still treasure chests with pay-to-access locks, but resistance has proven at the very least futile and at that very worst, catastrophic (PSN hack).

So, what can EA and the other big gaming companies learn from SimCity’s launch?  Always-online doesn’t work as a form of DRM, especially when you have millions of people logging on for the first time on launch day.  The SimCity servers are stable now and people have been able to enjoy the game without the same level of network problems as on launch day, but first impressions are everything.  SimCity might be a great game, but you’d have been hard pressed to find a review that said as much on launch day.  Imagine how much greater SimCity’s initial sales would have been if it weren’t for the ever-amazing Francis and thousands of other people putting out videos like this (audio NSFW):

[youtube id=”qCAz8hfTX-s” width=”618″ height=”378″]

What are your thoughts?  Do you think always-online DRM is hurting game companies and gamers?

Battlefield 4 Rumors Suggest The Return of Commander Mode, Recording Functionality, Dynamic Weather and More [Updated]

Update

It has been quickly brought to our attention that the following info has been deemed fake by NeoGAF mods, which falls in line with our suspicion of Battlefield 4’s alleged release date and resolution on next-generation consoles.

New Battlefield 4 rumors originating from a Chinese forum post suggest a number of exciting features including Battlefield 4’s setting, the return of the Commander mode, the inclusion of recording functionality, dynamic weather and much, much more.

Currently, Battlefield 4 is set to be revealed to the public on March 27th, and one day earlier to media on March 26th.

According to the forum post, the following information is allegedly what will appear in the April issue of Edge Magazine, which should be on stands by the end of March. Of course, none of the following information has been officially confirmed and should be considered rumor until proven otherwise.

As you read on, however, like us, you’ll most likely hope all of it is true. Should at least most of it come to pass, it looks like Battlefield 4 will turn out to be a pretty darn fantastic next-generation FPS. So, read on.

The author writes that Battlefield 4, releasing sometime in November 2013, will utilize the Frostbite 2.5 engine and will support DX11 API on the PC.

Along with the PC, Battlefield 4 should ship on current-generation consoles – PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 – along with next-generation consoles – PlayStatin 4 and the next Xbox.

Current-gen platforms will, once again, only be able to support up to 24 players while next-gen consoles and the PC will support up to 64 players. Next-gen consoles are said to run Battlefield 4 in 720p resolution at 60 frames per second.

Multiplayer battles will feature dynamic weather effects including random rain, dust storms, haze, and other special weather variables. Destruction 4.0 will allow for more realistic destruction. Terrain, surfaces and figures using Tessellation technologies will also appear more real.

Battlefield 4 is said to take place in the year 2020 in China and will feature China and the US as the main factions.

The game will feature advanced weaponry and vehicles that will appear more differentiated between factions. For example, the PLA Type 99 Tank can be upgraded with laser guidance while the M1A2 TUSK will be able to utilize armor piercing tank shells. Weapon modification is also said to be improved.

The current roster of multiplayer locations will boast maps like Diaoyu Islands, Tiananmen, Shanghai Bund, Xizhimen and Xizhimen’s Rush. Of course, this is not likely the final list of maps. Battlefield 4’s first DLC is said to include the maps Power Plan of Dalian, Daqing Oilfield, the Great Wall, and Granville Island (Wake Island?). It appears that those who pre-order Battlefield 4 will receive the first DLC free of charge, as was the case with Battlefield 3’s Back to Karkand DLC.

As in Battlefield: Bad Company 2’s multiplayer, Battlefield 4’s multiplayer matches will end in cinematic sequences. In-game sequences will also be triggered as the battle progresses in modes like Rush. In modes like Conquest, the Pearl of the Orient tower will collapse, for example, once the losing team’s tickets have become close to exhausted (as in Caspian Border CQ.) Airspace is also improved, allowing for less-restricted aerial dog fighting.

The heavily requested Commander feature will return and will allow players to direct infantry through a more strategic view of the battlefield. Commanders will also be able to support their team through the use of additional firepower and supplies, as well as through use of the UAV.

Battlefield 4’s single player campaign will be played from two different perspectives of the PLA and should last about 5-6 hours.

The enhanced Battlelog 2.0 will boast a micro-transaction system as well as recording functionality. Things like personalized paints and other appearance and equipment customizations will be up for purchase as will the ability to rent servers. Veteran Battlefield players will have access to exclusive weaponry in advance. Recording and micro-transations are said to leave game balance unaffected.

Currently, DICE is still rolling out DLC for Battlefield 3. End Game released today for non-Premium PlayStation 3 users. You can check out our full written review of the End Game DLC right here.

What do you think about this last batch of rumors? Think any, of not all of it, will come true? Do you have any of your own improvements in mind? Let us know in the comments below!

League Of Legends: Update 3.04 Places Restrictions on Toxic Players

In an effort to further restrict ‘toxic’ players from ruining the fun of other League Of Legends players, Riot Games has released a new patch imposing chat restrictions for those adamant on such shenanigans. A Riot Games developer explained during a blog post what exactly the new restrictions are, which you can read below:

Toxic Player Restrictions

  • Certain players (identified by Tribunal and by Player Support) will have a limited number of in-game messages available and limited access to [All] Chat.
  • Restricted players that successfully complete matchmade games will earn their chat privileges back.

In addition, to taking actions against toxic players, the latest update for League Of Legends also includes numerous of fixes and re-balances. You can view the patch notes here or simply scrolling down.

Update 3.04 Patch Notes

Character Balances

Elise

Elise has been rewarded too well for playing safely, so we shifted some of her power to her spider form to increase the reward for taking risks.

Neurotoxin

  • Cast range reduced to 625 from 650
  • Damage reduced to 40/80/120/160/200 from 50/95/140/185/230

Venomous Bite

  • Damage increased to 60/110/160/210/260 from 50/95/140/185/230
Janna

Howling Gale

  • Fixed a bug where the knockup duration was not increasing based on charge time
  • Knockup duration when fully charged increased to 1 second from 0.75 seconds
Jarvan IV

Jarvan has been bringing too much utility to his team, so we’ve removed the armor component of Demacian Standard’s aura.

Golden Aegis

  • Shield amount per nearby enemy champion increased to 20/30/40/50/60 from 20/25/30/35/40
  • Mana cost reduced to 45/50/55/60/65 from 65

Demacian Standard

  • Active no longer grants bonus Armor
Nami

Tidecaller’s Blessing

  • Added new visual effects to better communicate the amount of charges left
  • Duration increased to 6 seconds from 5
Singed

Singed is intended to be incredibly durable and to gradually burn down his opponents in team fights. By making disables more effective against him and reducing his initial burst damage, Singed’s opponents now have more time and ways to deal with him in these situations.

Fling

  • Damage reduced to 80/125/170/215/260 from 100/150/200/250/300
  • Ability Power ratio reduced to 0.75 from 1.0

Insanity Potion

  • No longer reduces the duration of disables
Taric

Last patch’s changes opened up different playstyles for Taric but did not effectively address his power level. These changes reduce Taric’s lane dominance by lowering his burst damage and forcing him to make more tradeoffs when choosing which spells to level up.

Shatter

  • Damage reduced to 50/90/130/170/210 from 60/105/150/190/240
  • Armor damage ratio reduced to 20% from 30%

Dazzle

  • Stun duration adjusted to 1.2/1.3/1.4/1.5/1.6 seconds from 1.5 at all ranks

Items

Blade of the Ruined King – Hotfixed 3/5

  • Attack Damage reduced to 25 from 30
  • Combine cost increased to 1000 gold from 650 (total cost increased to 3200 gold from 2850)
  • Maximum damage dealt to minions and monsters reduced to 60 from 90
  • Active heal amount is now reduced by the target’s Armor

Aegis of the Legion

  • Aura grants an additional 50% Health Regen, Armor and Magic Resist for minions

Runic Bulwark

  • Combine cost reduced to 400 gold from 650 (total cost reduced to 2950 gold from 3200)
  • Health reduced to 300 from 400
  • Magic Resist aura reduced to 25 from 30
  • Aura grants an additional 50% Health Regen, Armor and Magic Resist for minions

Locket of the Iron Solari

  • Locket of the Iron Solari is mainly picked up by junglers and supports, roles that most frequently earn less gold than others, for the team-wide active. We’ve reduced both the cost and personal stats on the item to lessen its gold impact while preserving its team utility.
  • Combine cost reduced to 520 gold from 670 (total cost reduced to 1850 gold from 2000)
  • Health reduced to 300 from 400

Runaan’s Hurricane

  • Secondary target radius increased to 375 from 300
  • Fixed a bug where Hurricane could target invisible enemies

Sheen

  • Combine cost reduced to 365 gold from 425 (total cost reduced to 1200 gold from 1260)

Trinity Force

  • Total cost reduced to 3843 gold from 3903 gold

Lich Bane

  • Combine cost increased to 940 gold from 880 (total cost unchanged)

Iceborn Gauntlet

  • We’ve noticed that, in general, champions who buy Iceborn Gauntlet are front-line champions with more emphasis on surviving than dealing AP burst damage. We’ve adjusted Iceborn Gauntlet’s stats to accommodate this play case.
  • Combine cost increased to 700 gold from 640 (total cost unchanged)
  • Armor increased to 70 from 60
  • Ability Power reduced to 30 from 40

Ravenous Hydra

  • Combine cost reduced to 200 gold from 400 (total cost reduced to 3300 gold from 3500)
  • Life Steal increased to 12% from 10%

Zephyr

  • Recipe changed: Stinger + Pickaxe + 725 gold = 2850 gold (total cost unchanged)
  • Attack Damage increased to 25 from 20

Warden’s Mail

  • Attack Speed reduction reduced to 15% from 20%

Randuin’s Omen

  • Attack Speed reduction reduced to 15% from 20%

Seeker’s Armguard

  • Ability Power reduced to 20 from 25

Runes

Continuing our efforts from Patch 3.02 to standardize cooldown reduction, we’ve slightly buffed Cooldown Reduction runes to provide less awkward stat amounts. For example, nine Tier-3 Scaling Glyphs of Cooldown Reduction previously provided 8.62% cooldown reduction at level 18, but will now provide an even 10%.

  • Cooldown Reduction and Cooldown Reduction per Level runes have been increased at all Tiers (varying from 2-35% increase)

Spectator Mode

Fixed a bug that would cause the spectator client to crash when using chat commands (ex: /joke, /taunt)

General

  • Ready checks no longer return players to the PvP.Net landing page
  • “Random” has been moved to the top of champion select
  • Chat notifications in the bottom right-hand corner of the client now wait to appear until players have closed the AFK popup dialogue first
  • Battle Training bots no longer acquire unavailable items
  • Dragon, Baron, Towers and Inhibitors now show assists

Borderlands 2 – Recent Patch Fixes Add On Disc DLC Recognition

For weeks now, those who have purchased the recent add-on disc for Borderlands 2, which included the first two campaign DLC’s as well as other goodies like the Mechromancer character class, have experienced issues with accessing certain areas or using loot acquired only in these DLC’s. Luckily, those affected can now expect some fixes.

As of this weekend, a new patch has been released on the Xbox 360 that corrects these issues and properly addresses players not being able to equip or use any loot found on either expansion DLC, with a more comprehensive patch to follow in the upcoming weeks.

In addition, there are numerous reports of users experiencing a loss of either bad-ass rank, skins or heads due to this new patch. Fortunately for you guys, the community manager over at Gearbox, Chris F., has stated that the latest patch and loss of the above items or bad-ass rank is just a coincidence. It would’ve happened regardless of a patch being released.

If you wish to acquire any lost progress or loot due to this unfortunate mishap, Chris F. suggested opening a ticket with Gearbox support to get some of the issues fixed.

Note: You must have a Gold Xbox live account, in order for Gearbox support to be able to restore any lost progress or items. They will issue you a Shift code that should fix the issue, which can only be redeemed if you have a Gold account.

Battlefield 3: End Game DLC Review – Battlefield 3’s Last “Hooah” Is Its Best One Yet

End Game is exactly what Battlefield 3 needed.

As Battlefield 3’s fifth and final expansion, End Game fills in the empty spaces with the more-than-welcomed addition of two classic Battlefield game modes, a round of four gorgeous Frostbite 2-powered maps, and a number of new ways to play the game with a set of new vehicles.

Capture the Flag and Air Superiority instinctively fit right in with Battlefield 3’s now impressive roster of game modes, while vehicles like the new motor-bike and AA jeeps prove to be a natural extension of the vehicular warfare that Battlefield 3 already does so well. Lastly, each new map stands out on its own while providing that true classic battlefield experience.

BF3_End_Game_CTF_Kiasar_Railroad_v2 copy

First, let’s briefly cover exactly what you get for the $14.99 USD price tag, or free if you’ve already dropped some cash for a Battlefield 3 Premium membership. As per previous DLC before it, Battlefield 3: End Game comes packed with four new maps, each based on a different season: Kiasar Railroad (Spring), Nebandan Flats (Summer), Operation Riverside (Fall), and Sabalan Pipeline (Winter). What’s nice about the seasonal theme is that each map carries with it a completely different look and feeling. End Game doesn’t suffer from the lack of diversity that the Aftermath Expansion did only a few months ago. The maps look great too. Kiasar Railroad captures the same natural beauty that Alborz Mountain did from the Armored Kill Expansion, while Operation Riverside shows off a gorgeous fall setting surrounded by rolling hills and snow-covered peaks.

End Game’s maps are built to accomodate a number of new vehicles as well. The new motor-bike requires tons of space and, of course, things to jump off of. Luckily, each map allows plenty of room to race around and gives you plenty of opportunities to catch some air as well. The addition of the motor-bike definitely feels like something Battlefield 3 has been missing its entire lifetime. It fits right in with the gameplay and is a ton of fun to ride. A motor-bike can accomodate up to two players: one driver and one gunner on the back. It’s quick and nimble and can slide around corners or perform wheelies for an extra boost of speed. We’ve already seen some crazy videos like this one showing off some of the insane stunts you can pull off with the motor-bike, and we’re looking forward to more.

New anti-air jeeps have been introduced to the mix as well, one for each faction, giving players a more mobile AA solution to the threats from above. Since all of the maps include at least one scout chopper for each side (plus attack choppers and jets in Conquest) there’s usually a lot going on in the air, so it’s nice to have the extra bit of defensive power on the ground. Sadly, the AA jeeps don’t seem all that effective. It can be hard to make good use of them, especially since they aren’t very heavily armored. They are best used in teams – one in the driver’s seat and one manning the cannons.

Like Armored Kill introduced the AC130 Gunship, End Game introduces the Dropship. Only available in Conquest, the Dropship gives the owning team a chance to call in additional infantry fighting vehicles and provides additional paradrop points when spawning into the Battlefield. It’s a subtle bonus that isn’t overly effective, as some would argue the AC130 Gunship was in Armored Kill.

BF3_End_Game_Dirtbike_Passenger_Firing_water

Regarding the maps, in terms of visuals and size, as well as vehicles, it seems that lessons have been learned from previous expansions like Armored Kill and Aftermath, making End Game’s content some of the best Digital Illusions CE has had to offer yet.

That’s not all, however. Let’s not forget about some of the classic game modes returning to the Battlefield like Capture the Flag and Air Superiority, as well as some of the additional persistance which you can check out in detail here. (Learn how to unlock the M1911 S-Tac!)

Capture the Flag

At long last, Capture the Flag returns from Battlefield: 1942. At default settings, CTF requires you to race to the enemy flag, take possession of it, and bring it back to home base by any means necessary three times before the enemy does. If both teams are stacked pretty evenly and no one can manage the full three points for a win, a built-in timer counts down to the end of the match, either ending it in a tie or giving the win to the team with the most flag captures. Should you down an enemy who’s taken your team’s flag, you must stay within its vicinity in order to retrieve it. Like in Conquest, the more soldiers in the flag’s vicinity, the quicker it will return. Your flag must be at your home base in order to successfully capture the enemy’s.

Because distances between each flag on all four maps are substantially greater than in most other iterations of the same game mode in other shooters, Battlefield 3’s distinct vehicle-based gameplay really comes into play here. It’s also why the game mode just feels like it belongs. With the numerous sandbox elements granted to each player, there are a ton of different ways to accomplish your goal. Each class of vehicle plays a different role and it’s up to you to decide how to best utilize that role. Currently, the most popular method seems to be by way of the motor-bike, using tanks and aerial vehicles to stop pursuers in their tracks and clearing a path for the flag runner.

Motor-bikes tend to play a larger role in CTF than in any of the other games modes, understandably. CTF is all about speed and precision. What better way to strike at the heart of your enemy than with two soldiers on a motor-bike? In modes like Conquest or Rush, bikes serve primarily as a method of quick transportation, albeit an extremely fun method of quick transportation.

5_End_Game_Dirtbike-CTF_Jump_Water copy

Air Superiority

Air Superiority, a game mode returning from Battlefield 1943, is a lot more fun than I had originally anticipated, and much more enjoyable than Tank Superiority, its tank-based counterpart, introduced in Armored Kill. When you have two teams of 12 players, each of whom get their very own jet, that’s a lot of dog fighting going on at one time and it can get hectic, in a good way. Though, that isn’t to say the fun will last forever. Capturing bases, fending off heat seekers, and gunning down your opponents can only go so far. Eventually, it gets old, as there really isn’t a whole lot else to do. Despite this, the game mode still does have its very important place in Battlefield 3.

The true beauty of Air Superiority lies in the fact that it gives those normally too frightened to fly jets in other game modes a chance to fool around, get more accustomed to flying, and unlock some stuff without the worry of upsetting others by wasting a perfectly good ride. What’s better yet is that anyone can earn points by capturing bases, which means you’ll unlock items much faster than in modes like Conquest. A few good rounds of Air Superiority should get any rookie pilot up and running with a decent amount of confidence in a short amount of time.

It’s too bad it only took DICE until now to introduce the mode, but better late than never.

It’s noteworthy that pilots can no longer eject themselves from their cockpits, meaning you get the kills you deserve. It would have been nice if a few more obstacles were thrown into the mix as well. Nebandan Flats features rows of wind turbines that you can use to dodge your enemy, but none of the other maps provide any sort of interactivity the same way Coral Sea did in 1943. Something as simple as a large mountain range would have sufficed.

BF3_End_Game_Air-Superiority_02_water

In closing, Air Superiority is a fantastic and essential addition to Battlefield 3, but one that could have used some extra spice in order to retain a greater amount of interest.

Conquest and Rush

Conquest and Rush on End Game’s maps play out very similar to maps like Caspian Border and Operation Firestorm from the original game. It’s clear that DICE had these two maps in mind when building End Game’s maps, and that’s not a bad thing. They are big, but not too big. They include just the right amount of space to allow for some seriously epic vehicular-combat, but they keep the action constant so that you’re not always looking for your next fight. Where Armored Kill was a bit of a bore on consoles, End Game gets it just right.

Even if some Conquest flag layouts might seem a little big on a couple of the maps, DICE gives you more than enough tools necessary to deal with it. There’s usually a motor-bike at nearly all bases ready to swiftly carry you to your next objective. It makes each map feel smaller, despite their actual size. Similar to Armored Kill, however, End Game does give a bit of direction and purpose to the 5-flag Conquest layout by granting the new Dropship aerial vehicle to any team that captures and controls the central flag. The Dropship, which can be taken out by other vehicles, both aerial and anti-air, plots its own course along the map and allows players to either paradrop from it, or access an additional IFV (up to two on PC) which also paradrops to the ground in its own neat little sequence.

Rush is a blast to play on End Game’s maps. Nebandan Flats and Kiasar Railroad are fairly open and feature tons of space in between each set of MCOM stations in order to give plenty of room for tank vs. tank, chopper vs. chopper, or tanks vs. chopper action. This time around, however, you can say goodbye to the pesky Gunship that plagued Rush in Armored Kill. Despite the lack of the Gunship, there’s still a lot of room for aerial combat on each Rush map thanks to the inclusion of the scout choppers. Operation Riverside is particularly fun as a Rush map, reminding me a lot of Isla Inocentes from Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Obviously, the Fall setting is quite similar, but I really enjoy rushing up over the hills and through some of the winding routes between the cliffs and trees, as well as the opportunity for some long range sniper and counter-sniper action. Sabalan Pipeline plays similar in that infantry has more opportunity to stay covered amongst the bushes.

BF3_End_Game_Airdrop_water

Generally, both Conquest and Rush feel similar to Armored Kill, but refined in order to reflect tried and true maps like Caspian Border, Operation Firestorm or Kharg Island. Once again, DICE has done away with or improved upon elements that didn’t work out so well in DLC like Armored Kill. What’s left is a handful of amazing Conquest and Rush maps that also work well with modes like Capture the Flag and Team Deathmatch.

Team Deathmatch

Oddly, I found Team Deathmatch to be a particularly attractive choice of game mode on these new maps. DICE has obviously taken what’s made locations like Noshahr Canals TDM and Kargh Island TDM so popular and incorporated it into these new maps. If I had to describe what makes them so successful in one word, it would be ‘crates,’ lots and lots of ‘crates.’ It might seem a lazy choice to simply leave a bunch of crates lying around and call it a good TDM map, but man, does it ever work. Kiasar Railroad might as well be the new Noshahr Canals. It plays exactly the same, but with a fresh backdrop of lush, green pine trees. What keeps me from absolutely loving the TDM version of the other three maps is their focus on ground vs. roof fighting. Call it a personal grudge against roofs, but I hate them. I find them more of an annoyance than something that one must be tactically aware of. There’s nothing worse than getting into a good flow of infantry fighting on the ground, only be be stopped dead cold by a soldier on the roof looking for easy pickings. I find it a waste of time fighting for good positioning on a roof, so you won’t see me going up there, unless I’m going for the grudge kill, which happens often.

But, generally, I’d easily add these maps to my list of favorite TDM maps. They’re fast, furious, and overflowing with action thanks to some tight spaces and their chaotic layouts.

In my books, Battlefield 3: End Game goes right up there with Back to Karkand and Aftermath as some of the best Battlefield 3 DLC (if not some of the best DLC for a first-person shooter, period), and serves as a more than proper close to a year and a half of Battlefield 3. DICE went back to Battlefield 3’s roots to conjure up some of the best maps yet that work well on literally all game types while bringing back some of the Battlefield series’ most classic game modes, and throwing in some of the most enjoyable vehicles to date.

If Battlefield 3’s post-launch support is any indication of what we can expect from the months following Battlefield 4‘s release, we’re in for another fantastic era of Battlefield.

Let us know in the comments below what you think of Battlefield 3’s last “hooah.” You can also vote on the right-hand side of the page to let us know how you rate Battlefield 3: End Game.

Battlefield 4 Teaser Clip, “Prepare 4 Battle 03.27”

“Prepare 4 Battle 03.07,” reads a small teaser clip of what is supposedly a sequence from an upcoming Battlefield 4 reveal trailer.

Early this morning, Digital Illusions CE tweeted out the short clip from their Twitter account, saying, “Straight from the video editing suite: Prepare 4 Battle – 03.27! This sneak peek now, more soon. (Please RT!) #BF4.”

The clip, which you can check out here, is made up of sounds and images of machinery, presumable a tank or other military equipment, and show’s off the new “4” logo along with the aforementioned text.

While it’s been previously revealed that DICE and EA will be showing Battlefield 4 to media on the 26h of March, this teaser suggests the public will get their own peak at the sequel on the 27th of March, a day later.

We are unsure if it will be a public trailer viewable by all, or if it will be the last Premium video still set for release some time in March, viewable only by Battlefield 3 Premium members.

Here are some stills from the short clip. What do you guys think? Let us know in the comments!

Halo 4 – Title Update 3 Incoming, More Matchmaking Updates and Castle Map Pack Wallpapers

343 Industries has some brand new imagery to share showing off some of the locales featured in the upcoming Halo 4 DLC, Castle Map Pack, arriving Apirl 8. Also, more details emerge regarding upcoming matchmaking playlist updates as well as the next Halo 4 title update.

First, if you haven’t yet, make sure to check out the first trailer for Castle Map Pack right here.

On to some cool screenshots of each of the three new maps, Daybreak, Outcast, and Perdition, with official descriptions from the Halo Waypoint Blog.

Daybreak

Official description: “Operation: Daybreak is effectively a cluster of ONI research facilities and sensor relays residing in the vast highlands of Saviron, on the blue-green planet Oban. With the destruction of so many worlds at the hands of the Covenant, this planet is now undergoing preparations to make it a home for millions of human refugees. In the meantime, the UNSC Navy continues to use it as a key staging ground for a number of highly classified military exercises.”

Outcast

Official description: “One of the few worlds left unscathed by the Covenant, the remote outer colony of Talitsa has always had a strong anti-centralization and pro-colonial autonomy sentiment, even since before the war. The UNSC halted several early political uprisings in the colony’s major population centers, but this only fostered a more radical form of dissent, now in the form of secluded and heavily armed redoubts. Ultimately, these sites would provide the foundation for a number of major political movements.”

Perdition

Official description: “New Carthage has always been a prime example of a healthy, growing colony, even since before the war. Hidden below the city of Pilvros, however, one of the thermal reactors which provided clean and safe energy in the past has now gone critical. While a large-scale evacuation effort is underway, scans of the reactor section are quickly acquired to help analysts determine the root cause of this impending disaster.”

In the latest blog update, 343 Industries notes that matchmaking updates, which you have come to expect as weekly Monday updates, will now take place bi-weekly. That means no matchmaking update should be expected this coming Monday, March 18.

“Bravo” writes, “Overall, this will allow us to provide you with more substantial updates, bestow attention where it’s most needed and allow newly implemented playlists a longer runway to succeed or fail from both a gameplay nuance perspective as well as supplying more data to mine and learn from.”

In addition to title update 2, Halo 4’s latest substantial game update which you can read all about right here, 343i has confirmed that further gameplay tweaks are incoming with more details to come during the team’s panel at PAX East. “Bravo” was able to confirm, however, that “you’ll soon be notified when and where your teammates are killed by an ‘X’ logo that will appear on your HUD for a brief period. We’re pumped to bring this community request back to life and can’t wait to hear you screaming ‘ONE SHOT ON MY X!!’ in Matchmaking.”

Keep your sights on MP1st for more details! Meanwhile, check out our review of the latest title update as well as the Halo 4 Majestic Map Pack.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 “Unexpected Reveal” Confirmed to be Fake

The story you see below, meant to be published yesterday, was held off due to uncertainty of the legitimacy of the content. Luckily, through an Activision representative, our friends over at CI were able to confirm that it is, indeed, fake. Thanks guys!

So, this exists – a webpage with the URL “unexpectedreveal.com,” registered on March 11, that briefly flashes the image found below along with the sound of night vision goggles booting up. Shortly after, a countdown timer appears (second image), indicating some sort of reveal in less than a week.

Both the fonts used in the image and count down timer look similar to the Call of Duty series’ trademark font used in all three Modern Warfare titles.

Screen Shot 2013-03-14 at 4.26.40 PM

Screen Shot 2013-03-14 at 4.39.35 PM

Check it out the webpage for yourself here.

The URL appears to be registered by an Infinity Ward employee, which is not common, as most URLs for publishing companies like Activision are registered by brand protection companies, not the developers themselves.

A similar countdown was discovered leading up to Modern Warfare 3‘s announcement, revealing a fan-made film produced by WPC Toronto called Find Makarov, which you can check out below.

[youtube id=”NLmsiaN5dZM” width=”618″ height=”378″]

A sequel was later produced dubbed Find Makarov: Operation Kingfish.

[youtube id=”afs8lcfBY7Q” width=”618″ height=”378″]

What do you think? Does it look Call of Duty or Modern Warfare-related? Could it be another fan film? I suppose we’ll find out in a few days.

Cyberpunk 2077 To Include “Multiplayer Features,” Says CD Projekt Red

“It will be a story-based RPG experience with amazing single-player playthroughs, but we’re going to add multiplayer features,” CDPR managing director Adam Badowski recently told Eurogamer.

Like CDPR’s upcoming The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077 will be an open-world game. “The first and most important environment for Cyberpunk is the city, obviously,” he said. “But not only the city: you can expect some more environments in the Cyberpunk game. We want to start in the Night City, which is cool. And yes it will be an open world game as well.”

Players will not dawn the role of a pre-defined hero, however. Unlike The Witcher 3, “Cyberpunk will have different character classes,” says Badowski. “We’ll have different situation in Cyberpunk,” meaning players won’t be restricted to fiction or story, as in The Witcher 3.

Cyberpunk 2077 is still early in development and is expected to release on PC and next-gen consoles sometime in 2015.

Check out the captivating Cyberpunk 2077 teaser trailer below:
