Day One Patch Confirmed for Twisted Metal

David Jaffe speaks about a day one Patch coming for Twisted Metal.

Although Jaffe has stated that he hates day one patches, he confirms that there will be a day one patch for Twisted Metal. However, the patch will be “a very small download”. Not much details have been given out other than that it “fixes a few bugs”, but he went on to explain that “it mostly is there to address some balance issues that we [Eat, Sleep, Play] had to get fixed for certain vehicles that we discovered post disc [after the game went gold]”, thus the reason for the patch. However, the main focus of the patch is to address certain balancing for vehicles. As mentioned before, David and the team have been working hard for the last few weeks of development to assure that the game is as balanced as possible.

Treyarch Dev: “Perks Are a Reason Why CoD Isn’t Natively Competitive”

Recently, Gameplay Designer at Treyarch, David Vonderhaar, has been talking to fans about Call of Duty’s perk system and how it affects the competitive nature of first-person shooters.

Perks have always been a hot topic among Call of Duty fans. If you’ve missed it, check out Vonderhaar expressing his views on controversial perks like stopping power, and ghost/assassin.

The Call of Duty franchise has, so far, done a great job of catering to a wide audience of gamers. However, if there is one group that many think could use some more attention, it is the hardcore group. These are competition-level players who are extremely skilled at their FPS of choice. Of course, catering to a more hardcore crowd does leave the newer, less-experienced players with a much more frustrating experience. Make a game too competitive, and you lose the casual audience that likes to play games for pure enjoyment and fun. It seems that David Vonderhaar, developer on World at War and Black Ops, would agree and has looked to fans on Twitter for important feedback.

“Perks are a reason why the game isn’t natively competitive,” said Vonderhaar, breaking it down to the core of the issue. While perks add a whole new dimension to first-person shooters like Call of Duty, it does take away from the simple gun-on-gun gameplay that many hardcore players have come to love, players who rely solely on their quick reflexes and skill. Vonderhaar suggested, “if we can fix this, perks will be for ‘pub type’ fun and no perks for ‘competition type’ fun. They are different things.” He went on to add that “perks are effectively game cheats. Cheating is fun … except when trying to make the game genuinely competitive.” One fan brought up the point that perks allow for role specialization. Vonderhaar countered that “role specialization can come from gun class choice. It works that way in all competitive shooters except ours.”

MW2 Perks

These are some pretty bold statements coming from a developer who has worked on one of the most significant FPS franchises of this generation. However, it does show a willingness to break traditions and explore new territory, something many fans would argue the Call of Duty series could use at the moment. Could Treyarch’s next Call of Duty title be the first to break the mold?

Let us know your thoughts in the comments below. Do you think perks break the competitive nature of an FPS?

The Most Popular Map in Modern Warfare 3 and Boosters Discussion

Robert Bowling acknowledges boosters in Modern Warfare 3 and reveals the most popular map at the moment.

Boosters and Modern Warfare 3

Only if I had a dollar for every time I come across boosters in Kill Confirmed; it is one of the most irritating problems I face in Modern Warfare 3, especially in my favorite gamemode. Personally, whenever I see boosters, I make their experience a living hell, like backing one into a corner where he/she can’t move, until they rage quit. Otherwise, when the match is over, I report the boosters in game, and I encourage everyone to do the same. If you’re a booster and you’re reading this, then please leave a comment explaining why you go out of your way to ruin the game for others; there are private matches to fool around with friends. Of course, tactical insertions make this possible, but there has to be a way to rectify this problem. Luckily, Infinity Ward is aware of the issue. One fan questioned Bowling on Twitter whether there’s a way to stop this from happening. Bowling explained, “there are definitely some actions you can take from a script standpoint, but they come with some risks.” He went on to reassure that the security team is “discussing” a way to address the problem. Be sure to read more about Modern Warfare 3’s code of conduct.

Most Popular Map

You saw this one coming. Dome is the most “played and most voted for map” in Modern Warfare 3 according to the game’s statistics. Interestingly, Robert Bowling prefers “bigger maps.” Historically, the Call of Duty community has gravitated towards smaller maps. One example would be another small map called Dome from Treyarch who developed World at War. What is your favorite Modern Warfare 3 map so far? Does it depend on the gamemode you’re playing?

Modern Warfare 3 Proficiency Exploit Update Now Live

Robert Bowling has just revealed that Modern Warfare 3 received a hotfix that will prevent players from exploiting the proficiency exploit.

Earlier today, we reported on the possibility of  proficiency exploit being hotfixed instead of waiting for patch 1.08 to be released. Luckily, Infinity Ward has released a hotfix to address the problem. Bowling stated that the security team has “released a hotfix for Modern Warfare 3 which prevents users from exploiting the ‘Damage Proficiency’ glitch.” Unlike patches (title updates), hotfixes are pushed at any time without the need go through the certification process by console manufactures. It worth noting that Infinity Ward has been “monitoring anyone who uses it [the exploit] and banning them,” according to Bowling.

Displeased Fans Attack Modern Warfare 3 – “It’s The #1 Most Played Game” Bowling Defends

Infinity Ward’s Community Manager, Robert Bowling, defends the Modern Warfare series against displeased fans and acknowledges other competitors to Modern Warfare 3.

Let’s face it, the Call of Duty series is one of the more popular videogame franchises in the history of first-person shooters, if not videogames in general. However, as with most things popular, there are those who feel it necessary to express nothing but negativity towards whatever that popular thing may be. In the case of the Call of Duty franchise, which has been under constant accusation of becoming “stale”, there are those who are convinced that Infinity Ward’s latest title is utterly “broken”. Robert Bowling responds, “lets not exaggerate. It’s the #1 most played game, clearly the core mechanic isn’t broken. However, can still be improved.” If we know one thing, it is that the team behind MW3 has a knack for improving things. Proof of this lies in the number of patches already released, plus a new one just around the corner (patch 1.08).

One unsatisfied fan likened the Modern Warfare series to the recent Transformer movies saying the “transformers movies make a ton of money and everyone hates them and Michael Bay too.” He added, “…just because it makes money, doesn’t mean it’s a good product.” Bowling defended, “if it makes money, then someone thinks its a good product. Simply because you don’t like it, doesn’t make it a bad product.”

Though Modern Warfare 3 is a force to be reckoned with, Bowling admits that it does have it’s fierce competitors. For example, “Epic Games’ Gears of War 3, DICE’s Battlefield 3, and Bethesda’s Skyrim [are] all amazing competitors.” Bowling went on to mention that if you haven’t given The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim a fair chance, “you’ve done yourself a great disservice.”

What are your thoughts? Are these “fans” rightfully disappointed, or is it just a side-effect of extreme popularity?

Modern Warfare 3 Patch 1.08 Details and Possible Proficiency Glitch Hotfix

Update #1: Added the prestige token glitch fix confirmation and the proficiency hotfix.

Modern Warfare 3’s Robert Bowling reiterates what’s confirmed to be fixed in the next title update and hints at the likelihood of a hotfix to address the proficiency glitch.

Proficiency Hotfix

Robert Bowling previously stated that patch 1.08 will include a fix for the proficiency glitch, but as the exploit is becoming more popular, it turns out that Infinity Ward is trying to “hotfix this exploit” before the patch. The glitch enables players to use any proficiency on their weapon of the choice. For instance, assault rifles aren’t allowed to have the “damage” proficiency equipped; however, with this exploit, players can have damage on an assault rifle. *The glitch has been fixed.

What we know about Patch 1.08 so far

Bowling stated that both lag compensation and PS3 voice problems “are already improvements planned. The PS3 mic quality will be in the newest update specifically.” So, we might have to wait for further improvements to lag compensation. Bowling also said that the ‘out of memory 7 error’ will be addressed in the next title update, “along with many other theater improvements.” *The prestige token glitch “will be addressed in the next title update”, unlike the proficiency glitch which has been resolved through a hotfix because the prestige token glitch “requires a code change that can not be done via hot fix”.

Beyond the next patch, Bowling would like to see further improvements to lag compensation, which is “always a priority”, game balancing, and connection.

New Twisted Metal Details – Matchmaking, Private Matches, Party System, and More

David Jaffe speaks out about various aspects of Twisted Metal multiplayer and confirms Kamikaze’s name change.

The game will support a party system that comes featured with party chat only. This means that when your playing a game you can have the option to either speak with just your party or with everyone in the game. The chat is on an open connection, meaning that you won’t have to select any buttons to talk to one another. There will be party chat features. So, if another member of your party is in another game, you can simply switch to party mode so that you can communicate with that person. Also, there will not be text chat besides the message board, which only hosts can leave messages on.

The game will feature a matchmaking mode along with a server list for both ranked and unranked games. Players who join matchmaking games will be matched with other players based on skills, and the re-balancing of games will also be based on skill levels. Ranked games can only be started when there are a minimum of 6 people in the lobby, and no team can have no more then one person more.If the host chooses to leave the game then it will automatically find another host without ending the game. Players will also be able to host private matches, though there will not be any ranked rooms or dedicated servers options as some players might be inclined to boost each others ranks.  There will be options to keep certain players out of your rooms such as a skill level or a password protected option.

If you guys haven’t noticed it yet, Kamikaze name has now been changed to Spectre. Many fans were wondering whether he would make it in the game or not, and it appears that he has now been named swapped with Kamikaze. So, the vehicle still looks Kamikaze, just a different name.

Twisted Metal is set to release February 14th in North America and February 17th in Europe. Be sure to read about the latest Twisted Metal News.

Battlefield 3 Gameplay Designer Asks The One Thing You’d Change About BF3

With Battlefield 3’s future gameplay tweaks in the hands of a new set DICE developers, hopes are set high. Gameplay Designers Gustav Halling and Tim Kjell look after Battlefield 3 fans and ask some important questions.

You may remember yesterday that we reported Senior Gameplay Designer, Alan Kertz, leaving development of Battlefield 3 and putting it the hands of other DICE developers. Gustav Halling, one of these Gameplay Designers, recently took to Twitter to ask Battlefield 3 fans this question: “If you would get 1 wish and could tweak 1 thing about BF3′ gameplay, what would it be?” Kertz asked this earlier a few months back as well, which led to a number of changes, but it will be interesting to see what comes out of it this time. This is certainly a good way to set foot under the spotlight of Battlefield 3 fans, a spotlight that will also be shared with Gameplay Designer, Tim Kjell. Kjell recently assured fans that he “will be evaluating a lot of things together with Gustav Halling.” One example of this is Battlefield 3’s fall damage and parachute deployment. Many feel fall damage is too high or that the distance at which a player takes damage is too short. Kjell commented, “the more feedback, the better. I want to have a good look at it to see if/what it needs tweaking.”

Though one of our favorite DICE devs has moved on to bigger and better things (what could be bigger or better than Battlefield 3?), the future of Battlefield 3 looks bright.

Knowing that many of the projects covered by Kertz have already been completed and will most likely be making into the February patch, what are some things that you believe DICE developers should turn their attention to in order to make Battlefield 3 a better experience? Or, in this case, what’s the one thing? Let us know in the comments bellow!

DICE To Begin Development of “Next Generation of Titles”?

Could the team behind Battlefield 3 be preparing to begin work on their next project? Recent evidence suggests that Digital Illusion CE (DICE) is indeed beginning to shift focus away from Battlefield 3 and onto something new, perhaps even towards the “next generation.”

Within the past month, we’ve noticed DICE beginning to intensify their search to fill job openings among the DICE team, most noticeably for concept artists. This suggest that they want to begin building assets for their next project, whatever it may be. Examples of these include Cinematics Artist, Concept Artist, Level Artist, Senior 2D/UI Artist, Senior Level Artist, Senior VFX Artist, and Technical Artist. Interestingly, the description under the ‘Backend Developer’ position also mentions word of “next generation titles.” It reads, “DICE is looking for a world-class Backend Developer to join our online team and help propel this system to the next level for our next generation of titles.”

Just recently, we also saw Lead Gameplay Designer, Alan Kertz, announce his departure from continuing his work on Battlefield 3. He stated to fans on Twitter, “moving on from BF3, leaving the gameplay in the very capable hands of @gustavhalling and @stormonster. I will still read and pass on OFC!” However, he did clarify that he is “just departing from the team that’s still diligently working on BF3.” He assured worried fans, “no, I’m not leaving DICE.” This also left some fans wondering what is to come of the promised weapon tweaks like the one-hit-kill body shots with bolt-action rifles at close range and the weapon attachment rebalance. Kertz assured that “the work for that has been done already,” therefore making it extremely likely that these changes will be present in the upcoming February patch.

Having worked primarily on the multiplayer gameplay of Battlefield 3, we could safely speculate that Kertz would stick to his guns and continue working on the multiplayer of another project. This leaves us with a few possible conclusions – that he has left work on Battlefield 3 to begin work on either a title like Battlefield: Bad Company 3 or the already confirmed Medal of Honor 2. Although it has been confirmed that developers Danger Close will once again be the primary developers of Medal of Honor 2, DICE’s involvement hasn’t been denied and is still very likely. The rumored Mirror’s Edge 2 is also another possibility (see easter egg in Operation Metro here), but considering it is primarily a single-player based game, it wouldn’t be likely for Kertz to move over to development on this game.

Of course, these are just our thoughts. What are yours? Could DICE be beginning work on the multiplayer for Medal of Honor 2, or perhaps a next-gen title? Are you dying for a Mirror’s Edge 2? Let us know in the comments below!

CoD Dev: “Stopping Power Isn’t a Viable Solution” to Perk and Weapon Balance

Recently, David Vonderhaar of Treyarch has been in conversation with Call of Duty fans regarding a fairly controversial topic: Stopping Power and its place as a perk in Call of Duty.

The Stopping Power was first introduced in Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare as a perk giving players a way to increase their bullet damage. The inclusion of this perk carried over into Treyarch’s Call of Duty: World at War and then once again into IW’s Modern Warfare 2. Unfortunately, many players quickly found, even back in CoD4, that Stopping Power became such a staple perk, it rendered all other perks in that tier negligible. Many would argue that if one didn’t use Stopping Power, they were at a serious disadvantage compared to the majority that would be using it.

In listening to community feedback, the tradition was finally broken when Treyarch released last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops, which did not include any sort of perk that added to bullet damage. Generally, this was received rather well among the community, although, it did give rise to the infamy of the Ghost perk, which Vonderhaar also recently spoke about. One fan recently commented, No one b****ed about the stealth perks from CoD4-6 since they had stopping power in the same tier. Giv’em stealth or power,” to which Vonderhaar replied, “they just b****ed about stopping power, instead.”

This year’s Modern Warfare 3 also didn’t see the inclusion of the Stopping Power perk, though developers did opt to raise the damage of all weapons as if they had this perk already built in. This made for very little survivability, especially with the added “proficiencies” which could increase different attributes of each weapon. Some would argue that this also unbalanced gunplay – another topic explored by Treyarch’s own David Vonderhaar, who had some bold things to say about Call of Duty’s weapon balance in general. Though many found Black Ops to include some of the best weapon balance in a Call of Duty game yet, many also remember the over-powered FAMAS and AK74U. One fan asked, “looking back, do you feel you did the right thing with the Famas/74u patches? Are you more open to rebalancing requests now?” Vonderhaar replied, “yes and yes.”

In a continuation of the weapon and perk balance discussion, Vonderhaar took to Twitter to talk to Call of Duty fans about Stopping Power and its future. It has recently become a slight trend to wish for the return of Stopping Power since many are now saying that it did, in fact, balance gameplay in Cod4 even though it may have made for fewer choices in that perk tier. Vonderhaar simply put it: “Stopping Power isn’t a viable solution. Solid mechanics with good tuning (and ability to real-world experiment with those tunables) is.” He added, “I am not making any assumptions. I am looking at the root cause and core tuning and so should you. Good talk, though.” It looks as though the next Call of Duty (Black Ops 2?) still might not see the return of Stopping Power, but should hopefully include some of the most balanced gunplay yet.

What do you think? Should Stopping Power return to Call of Duty? Do you have high hopes for Treyarch’s next title? Let us know in the comments below!
