Should Exploiters be Punished for MW3 Devs’ Mistakes? Bowling Answers

The infamous prestige token glitch is coming to an end with the next Modern Warfare 3 patch (1.08), but this particular glitch has raised an interesting debate between the “abusers” and MW3’s creative strategist, Robert Bowling.

Robert Bowling believes that a fix is included in “the next title update for MW3” to rectify the prestige token glitch, but with all the bans that Infinity Ward issued, this issue definitely left its mark. Some players, who admittedly abused the glitch, are arguing with Robert Bowling that since the team behind MW3 dropped the ball in terms of game design, the exploiters shouldn’t be punished for it. Bowling explained “we will fix it [prestige token glitch]. However, it’s important “we make it clear that its not okay to exploit, even while we’re fixing.” One angry player questioned Bowling on the merit of banning players for exploiting a design flaw, Bowling reiterated players are “not banned for there being a glitch, banned for abusing it.” In regard to the argument of how can the security team hand out bans for problems in the game itself, Bowling explained why it’s not his (security team’s) fault, “unless I came over to your console and got you prestige tokens that you knew you didn’t earn. Then no, I promise you, I am not.”

In case you missed it, be sure to read about the punishment the “abusers” received.

Battlefield 3 Hardcore Servers Back Up and Running

Those frustrated with the lack of hardcore servers in the console versions of Battlefield 3 need not worry any longer.

DICE has recently announced that “hardcore servers for console should be recovered and functioning properly.” They also ask to “please let [them] know if you’re still having problems!”

For those unaware, hardcore servers on the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Battlefield 3 unexplainably disappeared about four days ago. Though no reason was given as to why this happened, it looks as though the servers are now back up and running. We tested this ourselves on the Xbox 360 version and they are indeed there.

Battlefield 3 – DICE is “Investigating” Hardcore Server Issues

Many Battlefield 3 fans have noticed a lack of hardcore servers in the consoles’ browser recently. DICE, however, has stated that they are looking into the issue.

About three days ago, hardcore servers seemed to have disappeared completely from the server browsers on consoles. So far, this issues seems to be limited only to the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Battlefield 3. DICE recently stated that they are “aware of issues affecting console hardcore servers and working to correct them.” They went on to thank “everyone who reported – much appreciated!” Community Manager Ian Tornay, aka Crash7800, also assured that the team is “looking into reports about hardcore servers not working correctly.” However, no details have been given as to what could have possibly caused this problem or what steps the team is taking to resolve the issue. Stay tuned to MP1st for more details!

MP1st’s Multiplayer Experience of 2011

Now before I even begin writing, I can visualize the comment section rather clearly: “How can Battlefield 3 be the multiplayer experience of 2011 while still facing so many bugs and issues?” If you have no idea what I am talking about, great. Steer clear of internet forums. However, if I was forced to answer this very legitimate question, I would say that being one of the most ambitious multiplayer-focused first person shooters ever, Digital Illusions CE, the developers of Battlefield 3, had to take some risks. The biggest question is whether or not these risks were worth it in the end. I would argue yes, but at the same time, we are far from the end. While we deem Battlefield 3 as the best MP experience of 2011, for many, it will carry on well into 2012 and beyond.

Post-Launch Support

Simply put, Battlefield 3 is only going to get better and better thanks to the devotion of those at DICE still hard at work on this title. However, not all the credit can be given to them. The community behind Battlefield 3 is one of the best. The Battlefield 3 community, so far, has done an amazing job at providing constructive and in-depth feedback to developers, and thankfully, DICE is very good at listening. On top of patches filled to the brim with content, we’ve already seen the Back to Karkand expansion pack, a throwback to monumental Battlefield 2 maps, vehicles and weapons. DICE has made it clear that what we see next in terms of downloadable content is up to the community. Of course, any and all types of feedback can be given on the Battlelog, a social networking service provided to all Battlefield 3 owners for free. While there are still features left to be desired; namely a battlerecorder, private servers for consoles, better clan/platoon support to name a few, DICE is far from finished with Battlefield 3. If we can take past titles as an example, Battlefield 3’s future is bright indeed.

A Brand New Engine

A stand-alone reason for Battlefield 3 winning this years’ MP experience of the year is how high DICE managed to raise the bar. Not only does Battlefield 3 boast some of the best visuals of this generation, but we also have insanely large-scale battles including jets, tanks, helicopters, as well as one of the most immersive experiences in an FPS yet thanks to the amazing sound design and intense destruction. All of this wouldn’t be possible without the power of the Frostbite 2 engine. Of course, in creating a new engine for a game with such high expectations, risks run high. Unfortunately, this has shown in a less than perfect launch, as well as in the bugs and issues we still face today. On the flip side, thanks to this new technology, DICE was able to accomplish something that other studios could only dream of. These guys set out to innovate, and that they did.

Battlefield 3 “Moments”

If you asked me why I play Battlefield 3, I’d simply say that it’s for the amazing moments that can only be experienced in a game this epic. Don’t believe me? Check out the plethora of truly breathtaking videos on YouTube, many of which we’ve featured here on MP1st. Whether it be a slow-motion sprint across the beautiful landscape, an insanely long-distance sniper headshot, an amazing jet stunt, or a crazy helicopter crash, you’re bound to find yourself in a moment that you will not soon forget.

These are our reasons why Battlefield 3 is our multiplayer experience of 2011. What are yours? Perhaps a different game all together took your top spot. Let us know in the comments below!

For a full review of Battlefield 3 including all up-to-date patch notes, click here.

We’d also like to thank everyone for participating in our poll. Out of a total of 2,896 participants, a whopping 1,980 voted for Battlefield 3. Full results can be viewed below:

Why PC Gamers Are So Passionate About Their Mods

PC gamers are becoming a minority. Not because less people play PC games, but because more people are playing on the consoles. 15 years ago, almost every gamer could be considered hardcore by today’s standard. Things have changed.

The gaming industry is as big, if not bigger, than the movie industry and along with that, a lot of “mainstream” gamers came along. I say mainstream, not casual, because they play the same games as we do and almost love them as much. The difference between today’s hardcore gamer and “them” is that the hardcore gamers have played the older generations: They know their roots. I know a lot of the readers here at MP1st probably fall under my definition of mainstream gamers. There’s nothing wrong with that! You made a very wise decision. The quality and diversity of games has never been higher and thanks to the consoles and Steam on PC it has never been easier to get started.

But everything has a flipside. The amount of games with official mod support is getting lower every year. A lot of PC gamers love mods, myself included. It increases the longevity of a game after the developer stops supporting it. There are many kinds of mods. Some mods fix bugs, others completely transform the game. A lot of mods don’t stand the test of time because the developer of that mod just loses interest, but some others somehow cause a huge boost in sales for the game. Counter-Strike is an example for that. Counter-Strike was a mod for the first Half Life game. The game sold really well because of the groundbreaking singleplayer (it laid the foundation for almost every modern FPS campaign), but the multiplayer wasn’t that good. So, as expected, the sales dropped steadily. The slow descent  was only short term, however. After the Counter-Strike mod went beta and became available for people to download, the sales picked up again. Valve (The developer of Half Life) took notice and hired the guys working on the mod. 2 years after the original release of Half Life in 1998, Counter-strike was released. A game still being played competitively 11 years later.

Counter-strike 1.6

Something even more spectacular happened with Warcraft 3. Warcraft 3 is a regular realtime strategy (RTS) game. It was released alongside with great modding tools. The result? Defense of the Ancients, also known as DotA. A mod developed by a guy named IceFrog. This free mod didn’t just cause 1 standalone game or series to be made, it defined a whole new genre: The Action RTS. As an illustration for how popular the concept is, there are several big DotA style games out right now already like League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth, each with millions of players. But, that’s just the beginning. Blizzard’s Dota and Valve’s Dota 2 are expected to launch in 2012. For the first time ever, the 2 behemoths of PC gaming will be competing directly, all thanks to the brilliant idea of IceFrog.

Defense of the Ancients

Did anyone notice the huge deal with zombie modes lately? It got really big after CoD:WaW did it really well. But Treyarch wasn’t the first to implement zombies into CoD. There are numerous, very popular zombie mods for CoD4 and even some for CoD2. They don’t have the same graphics and gore as the multi million dollar budget versions, but I can guarantee you from my personal experience that they are just as intense. Maybe even more intense because they are filled with glitches. For example, your camp spot may seem solid for 10 waves, but in the 11th wave, a zombie might find a way to glitch up there. So next time you play Nazi Zombies, be glad earlier versions of CoD had modtools! You just cannot let your guard down. There is also another variant where the zombies are also players: it starts with 1 zombie. That player needs to try to melee another player. That player will get infected and the plague starts spreading. The last one to get bitten is the first zombie in the next game.

[youtube id=”a9R_PmL6O7k”]

Zombies? Check! But what about lasers? And I don’t mean those weak sauce lasers that show where you are aiming, I mean real lasers, the ones you use to provide people you don’t like with additional breathing holes. Star Wars lasers! Admit it, we all were kids once, and we all shot our friends with imaginary laser pistols from Star Wars making “pew pew” sounds. While there are plenty of Star Wars games, they mostly focus on the lightsaber stuff. Lightsabers are cool too, but lasers man! That was the idea behind a project made by and for the community. They wanted full blown Star Wars laser action, Call of Duty style! And so the “Galatic Warfare Mod” for CoD4 was born.

The Galatic Warfare Mod for CoD4 is a total conversion mod for Call of Duty 4 transforming the multiplayer from the 21st century to “a long time ago, in a galaxy far away”. It features 7 new maps, new guns, new sounds, new music, new textures, etc… Everything has been changed with immense dedication and attention for detail. After 2.5 years of hard work the final version released in July 2011.

The best part? It is totally free and the installations is a breeze, all you have to do is join a server with the mod and you will start downloading it automatically (don’t worry, the mod turns off again when you try to join a regular server). Click here to find out more about this awesome mod, and be sure to check the trailer below.

[youtube id=”dToRs1Jmg08″]

Mods can be complete conversions, but they don’t have to be. Some games are really good to begin with, but some people prefer slightly different rules. One of the best examples of such a mod is Promod for CoD4. Promod removes all killstreaks, locks the perks, rebalances weapon damage, gets rid of all unnecessary ambient noise, removes weapon sway and much much more. The result is very balanced gameplay with a focus on skill and strategy when played competitively in a 5v5 Search and Destroy mode, or extremely fast paced action with no downtime at all when playing in a free for all or team deathmatch mode

Mods also mean something else. If a game supports mods, it also has a console built in most of the time. Not a console as in the device you put under your TV, but as in the way we know it from the 80’s: A place where you can put in almost every command imaginable. It can sound and look complicated at first, but it makes a lot of things so incredibly easy to do. For instance if you know the IP address of a server and you want to connect to it, you can type “/connect [the ip]”. If you get disconnected for some unknown reason, just give it “/reconnect”. Want to change your ingame name without wrestling through menus? Try “/name [your name]”. These are some simple examples, but there are much more possibilities. Executing commands opens the door to so called “configs”. A config is a combination of commands saved in a file which can be run ingame. In those commands, a lot of settings are applied, from keybindings to render settings and where the HUD elements are placed. Especially interesting are those render settings. Professional gamers don’t have the same graphics as most people. They use special configs to increase the visibility. You can call it unfair, but so is having a bigger monitor.

Visibilty Config

Left: default graphics, Right: visibility config

Other people use it to make so called “fragmovies”. Similar to montages, but a lot more work goes into making a good fragmovie. While competitive gamers play, they record their actions with the “/record [name]” command. This only saves actions, not images, so there is no impact on performance at all and you’re left with a file of just a few MB. This can be played back later by the movie maker who has complete control over every pixel. They start by applying a movie config to boost the graphics or to stylize the colors. After that, they use some other commands to record it in super high speed. You think 60fps is fast? Some of these guys record at 240fps or even 480fps for the ultra slow-motion shots. You don’t actually need to be able to play it at this framerate. It takes a lot of time to render footage at that framerate, but the result is ultrasmooth footage with real natural motionblur and it allows for slick slow motion shots. The modtools also allow for extraction of ingame assets so the movie maker can do custom 3D animations. The results of this can be true pieces of art. Mix the high level of competitive play from Promod with these advanced techniques and you’ve got yourself a winner.

Movie Config

Left: default graphics, Right: movie config

The video below features some of the best players in the world in a private 5v5 S&D match. Getting 3 kills in a row at that level is extremely hard. These guys are fast, accurate and smart, just like their opponents.

[youtube id=”IozpixCl58w”]

I mainly focused on CoD4 because I’m very familiar with that scene, but it is absolutely not limited to CoD4. There are thousand of mods that add new functionality to Minecraft and most of the UI features Blizzard added to World of Warcraft in the past few years were available as third party addons first. Modders also managed to build a multiplayer mod for GTA: San Andreas, a game that didn’t ship with any online functionality whatsoever. Right now a multiplayer mod is even in development for TES: Skyrim! The list goes on and on. I hope I managed to clarify why PC gamers sometimes nag for modtools and why developers should probably listen.

What mods out there are you currently enjoying?

Modern Warfare 3 Patch 1.08 Will Fix “Damage Proficiency Exploit”

Along with other updates, patch 1.08 will include a fix for the damage proficiency exploit in Modern Warfare 3.

Robert Bowling has revealed that “the ‘damage’ proficiency exploit is already fixed in the next patch. We’re now tracking anyone abusing it and will ban offenders.” Bowling went on to explain, “the exploit allowed you to assign Damage proficiency to primary weapon classes that didn’t have it available. No way to do it by accident.”

On another note, Infinity Ward is “doing some updates to the leaderboards right now, so you might notice some wonky scores or incorrect placements for a little bit.”

Title update #8, patch 1.08, will be available for players to download some time this month.

Further Improvements to Modern Warfare 3 Spawns, Double XP Teased

Creative Strategist at Infinity Ward talks about further improvements to Modern Warfare 3.

Robert Bowling was recently asked if the spawn logic of Modern Warfare 3 would be seeing further tightening and if shotguns will ever be buffed. To this, Bowling answered that “both are things I agree with and am discussing.” If you recall, MW3 received a recent fix to address spawns, but the game undoubtedly needs more work in this department.

Bowling also re-confirmed that the Theater Mode will be seeing some improvements stating that there “is a known issue with short videos.” For many, short videos just skip to the end when playing back. He added that “it will be fixed along with other Theater improvements in the next title update for MW3.”

When asked if developers would be doing anything about Dead Man’s Hand (or as one fan called it, “Dead Noob’s Hand”), Bowling stated “not at this time, but we’re always discussing and re-evaluating balancing. Taking all feedback into account.” In case you missed it, Bowling also recently spoke of Scoreboard Improvements.

During the last holiday season, Call of Duty Elite Founders were granted 2 hours of double XP, but what about non-Elite members? Previous Call of Duty titles had Double XP weekend more frequently. When asked, Bowling commented, “yeah, we’ll definitely have some Double XP weekends to celebrate. No dates set yet however.”

So far, the teams behind Modern Warfare 3 have done a decent job improving the game since launch. Make sure to stay tuned to MP1st and visit our Modern Warfare 3 page for the latest info.

PS3 Elite Members will get DLC “shortly after” 360, Elite Maps to have Separate Playlists

Call of Duty Elite subscription, coupled with Microsoft’s deal with Activision for one month DLC head start for 360 owner, has over-complicated Modern Warfare 3’s DLC schedule for PS3 and PC players.

As you might have heard, Xbox 360 Elite players will have access to the newly announced maps, Piazza and Liberation, on January 24. Meanwhile, regular Xbox 360 owners will have to wait until March to buy the new maps as part of the first DLC bundle, which means that PS3 and PC non-Elite owners will get the first bundle in April. However, where do PS3 Elite members fall in? We already know that Beachhead studio stated that PS3 Elite subscribers will gain access to the new maps before Xbox 360 regular owners. Now, Robert Bowling promised that “the content comes out first for Xbox Elite Premium members, then shortly after for subscribers on other platforms.” By other platforms, Bowling is referring to PS3 as the PC version of Elite is still in limbo.

The timeline below might help you make sense of it all.

On another note, the two new maps, Piazza and Liberation, will have a separate playlist as expected. Robert Bowling explained that when the DLC is released, players will “receive an in-game notification that new DLC is available for download.” Also, the new DLC will have its own “exclusive playlists.” Bowling assured that the new Liberation and Piazza maps can be played “in Spec Ops Survival mode as well.”

Complete List of Weapons and Vehicles In Twisted Metal

The Twisted Metal Forums have finally gone live and have been updated with a full list of weapons and vehicles.

Weapons

Missile: Per single shot, power missiles create massive damage without any target tracking.

Napalm: When launched over the enemy, a napalm canister explodes when it hits the ground, causing immediate damage. To make the napalm fall even faster to the ground, press fire a second time when the napalm canister is in the middle of the air. Fire from the napalm explosion will rage and spread. Drive through the fire to cause even more long-term damage.

Remote Bomb:  To launch bombs from the top of any vehicle: Press fire once to launch, then press fire again to detonate remotely. Press triangle to enter aim-mode, and use the left analog to zoom and the right analog to aim.

Ricochet: The ricochet shoots a small explosive charge from a self-propelled cart. The ricochet will bounce around the environment until it finally explodes, either from contact with an enemy or when time runs out.

Shotgun: The shotgun is a powerful, single-shot weapon with short range but ridiculously high damage in a forward arc.

Sniper Rifle: Use the single-shot sniper rifle to aim directly at targets. The longer you hold a target in your snipe before firing, the more powerful the damage. With maximum charge, a straight head-shot results in an instant kill.

Super Gun Bullets:  Super gun bullets are an intense but temporary upgrade for the machine gun.

Vehicles

Axel: Two insane wheels of fury smash anything in their path.

Darkside:  The most-feared semi-truck cab across every interstate.

Death Warrent: All muscle. Built with fire-rocket brawn and blazing speed.

Crimson Fury: Speed is an understatement. Fire rages in its super engine.

Juggernaut: Turret-spewing semi-truck, tractor and trailer. A triple threat.

Junkyard Dog:  Taxi-launching tow truck. Need a ride?

Meat Wagon: Emergency-shrieking ambulance explodes bodies onto the scene.

Outlaw:  The killer of off-road. Jacked-up and grenade-happy.

Reaper: A soul-sucking, chainsaw-ripping custom chopper.

Roadboat: The sick force ’70s steel with a totally magnetic personality.

Roadkill: Mine-dropping muscle car. With a vendetta since the ’60s.

Shadow: Death’s favorite ride packed with explosive coffins.

Spectre: Wicked-fast speed and style burn a lot more than rubber.

Sweet Tooth: The taste of sweet destruction sprinkled with serial mastermind.

Talon: Once a news helicopter, now an in-flight massacre machine.

Vermin: Every enemy is a dirty rodent ready for utter extermination.

Warthog: Heavy-duty station wagon chained to ridiculous tank treads.

Incoming Battlefield 3 Updates – Red Dot/Holo Fix, M320 Tweak, and Javelin Nerf

Alan Kertz, Senior Gameplay Designer at DICE has recently listed some updates that we can soon expect to see in Battlefield 3.

Many recon players are noticing severe inaccuracy when firing immediately after aiming down sight when using a red dot or holographic sight with a sniper rifle. Some might assume that this is a counter-measure to so called “quick-scoping,” but when asked if this is something that will be “fixed” in the future, Kertz answered, “indeed.”

Adding on to the complaints are the issues players are having with the M320 grenade launcher. Many are hoping for some sort of nerf to be applied to this weapon. Kertz has suggested that perhaps “the refill speed [when replenishing ammo] on them is too fast” and that he “will update.”

When it comes to the Javelin, Kertz did mention that he had some intentions of nerfing the anti-aircraft weapon. When asked for clarification, he stated that he may nerf it “against choppers a bit maybe.”

Kertz also mentioned earlier that the .44 Magnum would be seeing “some love” in the near future. Today, he re-confirmed some more details agreeing with fans that 5 hits to kill at range is a bit much. One fan stated, “I love the .44 Magnum but don’t you think 5 hit kill at range is a little much? It has 6 rounds.” Kertz responded, “we agree, you and I.”

We are hoping to see these updates in the February patch, which we will have notes for as soon as they become available.

Battlefield 3 – DICE To Step Up Their Punishment of Cheaters

More and more, Battlefield 3 players are beginning to notice an increasing number of cheaters on the leaderboards.

If you were to take a look right now, you’d notice that all top spots on each platform are taken by players with score per minutes between 15k and 20k. Does this seem likely to you? Fortunately, DICE has stated that they are “continuing to crack down on cheaters” and also mentioned that they will be “stepping up [their] punishment of cheaters.” What exactly this entails, we are still unsure, but stay tuned to MP1st for more details as they become available. For now, DICE stresses that to report cheaters, use these methods explained in the Battlelog (below), rather than naming names on the various social network services.

GetSatisfaction –  getsatisfaction.com

Via Profile – Visit the users battlelog profile, click the report “exclamation” mark symbol at the top-right of their page, and fill it in with the reason for reporting them. (direct report)

Via EA Support – You can use the Feedback & Support yellow box at the left side of this screen to contact EA Support in regards to reporting individuals. (last resort)

We’d like to hear from you in the comments below. Is DICE doing enough to stop cheaters?

Twisted Metal – Vehicle and Faction List, Hosting, and Nuke Mode

New details for Twisted Metal have arrived from this month’s episode of QORE and also from this year’s CES.

Depending on the game mode, you may begin a match in either close quarters or in a race. In close quarters, players will be locked up in a tight space where they will battle it out with other players. For races, players can be eliminated until there is one left. Destruction is  just one of the many highlights in Twisted Metal. During all of these matches, things such as buildings or bridges can be used to players’ advantages. Nearly everything in Twisted Metal is destructible.

Below is a list of just some of the vehicles and factions that will be available upon launch. Any Faction leaders can be used for any vehicles depending on host settings. Vehicles can also be custom painted to meet any players’ needs.  Note that this list is NOT a complete list of every available vehicle in the game.

Vehicles:

  • Crimson Fury
  • Darkside
  • Death Warrent
  • Juggernaut – Allows you to carry up to two additional teammates.
  • Junkyard Dog
  • Kamikaze – The “Speed Demon” of Twisted Metal
  • Meat Wagon
  • Outlaw
  • Reaper – In terms of health, this vehicle is low compared to the others, however the amount of damage caused by a throwing chainsaw attack makes up for all that.
  • Road Boat
  • Roadkill
  • Shadow
  • Sweet Tooth – A bobble head has been added, which can be launched and is regenerated over time. Also can transform into Sweet Bot.
  • Talon
  • Vermon

Faction Leaders:

  • Clowns
  • Dolls
  • Holy Men
  • Skulls

Here are just some of the Game Modes available at launch.

  • Hunted
  • Last Man Standing
  • Nuke: It’s a “Twisted version” of Capture the flag. In this mode, players  will be prompted to capture faction leaders, where they will then be dragged behind the players’ vehicle. Depending on which vehicle you have, you’ll be required to stay in a designated area. Once the required time is met, you’ll then be able to “sacrifice” the leader for control of a Nuke Missile. Your goal here is to destroy the other teams’ statue, which is destroyed after three hits from a Nuke Missile. You can be shot down in Nuke Missile form.
  • Team Death Match
  • Team Last Man Standing – Each team has  a limited amount of respawns. The main goal here is to deplete the other team of their respawns.

Host Settings:

These are just some of the basic settings that can be used in a hosted game. The settings do go into a bit more then what’s listed below, but don’t be expecting Call of Duty amount of host tweaks. The tweaks that allow players to control what kind of vehicle and pickups that are on each map are meant to be meaningful and enhance the players game style to suite their specific needs.

  • Game Name: Allows you to set a custom name for your hosted lobby.
  • Game Password: Allows you to set a password for your lobby.
  • Ranked Game: Decide whether or not you want your room to be counted as a ranked game.
  • Game type: Set what game mode you want to play.
  • Skill Filter: Filter what type of skills are allowed in your game.
  • XP Rank Filter: Filters players based on rankings.
  • Max Players: How many players you want in your game.
  • Reserved Slots: Secure a place for anyone.

There is LAN support.

Twisted Metal is set to release February 14th in North America and February 17th in Europe. Be sure to read about the latest Twisted Metal News.

Battlefield 3’s VO Producer On “Dialed Down” Language and Incoming Teamwork “Updates”

Obviously, DICE made a number of improvements to Battlefield 3 after data was gathered from their Beta. However, there was one aspect in particular that was noticeably “dialed down” since the Beta. This was the, shall we say, “aggressive” voice-over language used among soldiers in-game.

Tomas Danko, Voice-Over Producer at DICE was asked this question earlier on Twitter: “Hey, did you remove some bad language VO in retail, the VO seems abit uhh.. tame in comparison with what I played in alpha.” Danko responded, “yes, I dialed it down a bit because people got offended despite it being [rated] M17+.” Surprisingly, he added that “most people still think it’s over the top.” There are many points that could be argued for or against aggressive language in an online FPS. Some may find it simply unnecessary, while others appreciate it as being a way to simply enhance the immersion even further. What would you be screaming if bullets whizzed past your head in the heat of battle or if all of a sudden you found a live grenade at your feet in real life? Though still a video game, Battlefield 3 does explore the very mature theme of war.

In other news, danko also recently mentioned on that “there will be updates on the teamwork aspect [of Battlefield 3] next month,” most likely referring to the upcoming February Patch. This statement was in response to criticism regarding DICE’s latest Battlefield entry to have seemingly taken a step backwards from past Battlefield titles, particularly in the teamwork aspect. Could we be seeing a change in the way we work with others in Battlefield 3?

Now, we want to hear from you. Do you feel Battlefield 3 was, in some cases, a step back from previous Battlefield titles? What’s your take on the tone of language in an FPS like Battlefield? Do you have a favorite VO line?

In case you missed it, DICE has PS3 VoIP issues planned for next month.

MW3 – Hints at Scoreboard Improvements and Next Gametype in Matchmaking

Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling touches on the lack of objective oriented variables in the in match scoreboard and teases the next game mode to make it to public matchmaking in Modern Warfare 3.

The team behind Modern Warfare 3 omitted one of the features that Black Ops did so well last year, scoreboards that go beyond kills and deaths. The scoreboards in MW3 lack any objective scores, such as Flags Capped, Bombs Planted, or Kills Confirmed. Robert Bowling explained, “I haven’t got much traction on that yet.” However, he went on to give us a glimmer of hope, “it’s something I would love to do if we can get the code support for it.” This could be viewed as a minor improvement, but it elevates objective play to some extent. On a different note, Bowling did promise new gamestypes coming to Modern Warfare 3’s matchmaking in the form of community made gamemodes, but it seems that the next addition will be the private mode, Infected. Bowling asked his followers on Twitter “if you could bring the Infection gametype from private match into public playlists. What default Infected & Survivor classes would you use?”

Why Multiplayer In Mass Effect 3? BioWare Answers

Casey Hudson, BioWare Executive Producer, answers the burning question among Mass Effect fans: “Why Multiplayer in Mass Effect 3?”

In an interview with Game Informer, Casey Hudson spoke of why he feels the release of Mass Effect 3 is a good time to introduce multiplayer to the franchise. As many already know, the first two Mass Effect entries were primarily focussed on the story of Commander Shepard and his team as they discovered the secrets of a menacing, ancient race of machines bent on devouring the Galaxy known as the Reapers. The difference in BioWare’s upcoming title is that the story now shifts focus to the battle between these evil dudes and the entire Galaxy. “That’s what’s different with Mass Effect 3. It’s now an open war across the galaxy. We try to show that to give you the scale of the war.” Hudson added, “It’s also the thing that finally made sense with why we’d have multiplayer and why it’s interesting to be someone else other than Shepard.” BioWare will now be giving players a chance to step into the shoes a different character (as well as different races). “On the multiplayer side, you get to be one of those special ops that’s constantly fighting to hold these locations around the galaxy. The more you do that, the easier it’s going to be for Shepard. The less of that you do, the less help you’re getting essentially.”

It’s widely known by now that the multiplayer will have some effect on the single-player. However, Hudson promised that those wishing to forgo the MP can still get the full experience out of the SP. (But we know all you amazing MP1st readers are here for some amazing Sci-Fi MP action!) Hudson explained that “some people will want to get to the end as fast as possible, but they’ll play multiplayer whenever, indefinitely. That’s one way to play it – to play the single-player story, go straight to the end, and not do any of the character stuff or side plots, but you play a little multiplayer now and then. Alternately, if you’re really focused on the single-player, you can do a more completionist playthrough and end up with the same results.”

In terms of downloadable content for multiplayer, Hudson mentioned that “there’s some multiplayer stuff, but we’re also planning some DLC on the single-player side, because it did really good in Mass Effect 2.”

Ghost Recon Future Soldier Confirmed for PC But Delayed Again, Beta Date Revealed

You may remember Ubisoft originally announcing that Ghost Recon Future Soldier would only make it to the PC in the form of their free-to-play equivalent, Ghost Recon Online, mainly due to concerns of piracy. Basically, ‘if gamers are going to pirate it for free, might as well give it to them for free’ was Ubisoft’s line of thinking. Of course this would mean only utilizing a limited amount of resources for PC’s F2P version since it wouldn’t be seeing much of a profit. However, according to Game Trailers, It seems Ubisoft has had a change of heart as they recently announced that Ghost Recon Future Soldier would finally be making it to PC as well, although at a later date then consoles.

Speaking of a later date, it seems that GRFS will be delayed further into the year, seeing a May release. May 22nd, to be exact. Also recently dated was the Beta for consoles which will be available some time in April. Again, the PC beta will be available at a later date. Make sure to stay tuned to MP1st for more details as they become available.

Are you going to be picking up Ghost Recon Future Soldier this May?
