Why Halo: Reach is the Definitive Multiplayer Experience

There’s no denying, unless you’re crazy, that Halo is a game that revolutionized single-player storytelling and multiplayer before the reigns were taken by the likes of Battlefield and Call of Duty.  As a ten-year veteran of the franchise, one iteration stands out among the rest, and that is Halo: Reach.  Halo: Reach is the culmination of ten years of love and labor by the brilliant minds at Bungie Studios, providing an experience that is yet to be challenged.  Two years on, Halo: Reach is still the greatest multiplayer experience that everyone should revisit, here’s why.

Balance:

The Battlefield 3 forums are currently rife with player concerns over MAV exploits, overpowered weapons, and the ability to spam mortars in one’s own spawn point, providing exploiters an unfair advantage against unsuspecting players oblivious to these exploits.  Modern Warfare 3 is no exception, as some express their outcry of aggravation regarding spawn trapping allowing exploiters to rack up an unprecedented amount of kills and killstreaks.  The existence of boosters for both games are also a tell-tale indication that there are fundamental flaws when it comes to balance.  Halo: Reach on the other hand has always been defined by balance.  There are rarely any cheap exploits in Halo: Reach that provides a player with an unfair advantage, aside from being knowledgeable about map layout, weapon layout, use of grenades, and the use of melee attacks; it encourages players to think and adapt from their shortcomings.  Halo has always been about rhythm, flow, and timing where one mistake can mean the difference between winning or losing.

Strategy:

Players used to the ‘Run and Gun’ style of combat associated with Call of Duty would probably not survive a firefight in Halo: Reach.  Since it takes longer for players to dispatch an opponent,  Halo requires players to be methodical in their approach when dealing with a single enemy, or a group of enemies.  Much like Battlefield in team based gametypes, teamwork is crucial as is with choosing a preferred loadout comprised of Armor Lock, Sprint, Hologram, Active Camouflage, Jetpack, and Evade.  As a new addition to the Halo franchise, understanding the pros and cons of each loadout is a vital component of planning your options depending on the maps, techniques employed by other players, and the skill level of each player with their chosen loadout.  Loadouts in Halo: Reach also promote players to adapt to the ever-changing strategies utilized by teammates and the opposition, requiring them to think quickly on their feet.

Weapons:

In correlation with strategy, proper use and acquisition of certain weapons in Halo: Reach can dictate team dominance in the field.  As with classes, weapon variations have always been important in catering towards a gamer’s preferred playstyle.  While contemporary shooters today provide players with an overwhelming number of different weapon choices and accessories, Halo: Reach keeps it simple.  Assault rifles are useful for taking down shields while precision weapons such as the DMR, pistol, and needler rifle are useful for engaging targets from mid to far range.  This simplicity induces players to experiment with each weapon and to come up with a combination that they are most comfortable with.  Power weapons placed in specific parts of the map are also provided to give the wielder an advantage to turn the game around, or to simply crush the other team.  Again, a given situation on the battlefield dictates what weapons the player should use and whether they should risk acquiring power weapons to come out on top.

Assassinations:

Think that Battlefield 3’s knifing mechanic is cool?  Assassinations are another new feature for the Halo franchise, allowing players the ability to knife or bash an unwary opponent.  While very tempting, assassinations does have its cons as it can leave a player vulnerable to enemy fire for a few seconds.   However, the ability and prospect of assassinating a player, in midair for example, provides a level of satisfaction that cannot be matched.

Replays:

As most Battlefield 3 players await the hopeful inclusion and return of Battlerecorder, Halo has always been one step ahead.  Replays have become an important factor for many players to understand maps, weapon placement, flanking routes, and so-called hot spots.  Not only does it provide players an incentive to play better and be creative, it also encourages them to revisit ‘holy shit’ moments to share with their friends and fellow gamers.

Co-op:

Whether it be local split-screen, system link, or Xbox Live, Halo: Reach has it all.  With the inclusion of 4-player co-op and firefight, there is nothing quite like enjoying a gameplay experience with three of your fellow Spartans fighting alongside with you.

In Retrospect, Halo: Reach is a timeless masterpiece that is sure to inspire and excite gamers and developers for future generations to come.  So do yourself a favor, re-examine Halo: Reach.  What awaits you may surprise you yet again.

Make sure to check out MP1st’s retrospective review of Halo: Reach.

5 New Modern Warfare 3 Prestige Levels Coming Soon on PS3 and Xbox 360

Earlier today, we reported on the PC version of Modern Warfare 3 mysteriously receiving five new prestige levels in latest patch.

Now, we have the official word straight from Robert Bowling, aka fourzerotwo, who tweeted, “[we] added 400 new ranks of 5 new Prestige levels in Modern Warfare 3 on PC in latest patch. Expect the same on consoles soon for everyone!” With addition of the new five level, the maximum prestige level is 15; however, emblems for prestige levels 16-20 were found in the game’s files on PC. There is no official word on whether Infinity Ward plans on adding more levels at the moment.

Are you guys excited for the new levels?

Modern Warfare 3 Now Has 15 Prestige Levels, 20 Prestige Emblems on PC

Yesterday, we reported on an imminent patch for MW3 on PC. Other than the fixes and weapon balancing that PS3 and Xbox 360 owners received a while ago (read patch notes here), it appears that the number of prestige levels on PC has increased as well.

Steam user, Hungaryan, posted several screenshots of what the team behind Modern Warfare 3 has changed in terms of prestige levels. As you can see below, now PC players have to reach ‘Prestige Level 15’ in order to reset all stats. Before patch 1.5.387 on PC, Modern Warfare 3 had a maximum prestige level of 10. Players were able to reset stats – using a prestige token – at level 10.

Interestingly, 10 new prestige emblems have been added to the game files as well, according to Charlie Intel (see image below). Bringing the total number of prestige levels to 20, not 15. We still don’t know if levels 15 through 20 are accessible or not, but we’ll keep you posted as we learn more.

Starhawk Beta Update 1.2.9 – Skill System Launches with a Stats/Level Reset

Those who are in the Starhawk Beta are soon to be greeted with another update.

Earlier today, Lightbox Interactive deployed a new update that will not only fix certain bugs and issues, but will also add the long awaited skill system. Dylan Jobe, President of LightBox Interactive, stated on Twitter that the current skill system is a  “work-in-progress” and that the team is “looking forward to hearing your feedback”. It should be noted that skills and ranks will be reset like usual so that they may collect data on the latest of update along with how the skill system is handling.

Dylan Jobe also commented on concerns over the skill system being more like a perk system. “Oh trust us — we’re aware of how ‘perk’ systems can adversely affect games. Starhawk’s is different.” he said, ” Hopefully for the better!”

You can read more about the new update on the official site.

Mass Effect 3 Co-op Trailer Break Down: How to Build a Customizable Arsenal

BioWare recently released a set of five action-packed trailers for the upcoming Mass Effect 3, one of which takes a look at the weapons, armor and powers you’ll be using in ME3‘s multiplayer co-op mode, Galaxy at War.

Just like the last ME3 multiplayer co-op reveal a few weeks back, we’re going to break this one down and check out some of the sweet features included in Galaxy at War.

First, sit back and enjoy this gameplay video titled Mass Effect 3: Build a Customizable Arsenal. If you want to skip to the multiplayer portion, which is what we’re concerned about here, start playing at the 48 second mark.

[youtube id=”4L8NOHSC9ww” width=”600″ height=”350″]

Characters:

According to the image below, It looks like players will be able to build up a character within each of the classes that Mass Effect 3 has to offer. What isn’t clear yet is whether or not you’ll be able to have more than one character within the same class. Going through the classes in the trailer, it looks as though certain races are only available for specific classes. In this case, it looks like two humans (male and female), an Asari and a Drell are the playable races for the Adept class.

Loadout:

Upon selecting a character, players will then be able to tweak their specific loadout. Here, players can choose among different powers, weapons, appearances and equipment. The store was not featured in this trailer, unfortunately. On the right side, you can see your “kit” which will display your current set of powers. Passive powers such as “Alliance Training” and “Fitness” are not shown here. Moving down, you can see a selection of primary and secondary weapons. It looks like up to three of each will be available, though surely only one of each will be available to use in-game. Next, we have your “equipment”. What exactly this entails is unclear, but it could possibly include different grenade types among other gadgets. Lastly, the inclusion of credits obviously means that players will be able to buy their weapons, equipment and possibly different armor options.

Appearance:

In the armor customization menu, players will be able to tweak specs like primary color, highlight color, secondary color, pattern, pattern color, and lights. However, it looks like the armor itself is set for each class as there is no option to change its style. This, of course, should prove useful in-game in order to differentiate between classes among team members.

Powers:

Players will have access to 5 different powers, depending on each class of course, 3 of which will be active, 2 of which will be passive. According to the multiplayer reveal shown earlier, different races may have access to different powers within the same class. Each power can be upgraded up to six times, though different variations will become available starting at rank 4 of each power. Obviously, the higher ranks will cost more points to unlock. We could assume that the rank number will correspond with the number of points needed to unlock. In the examples below, we can see that the “Singularity” powers can be specialized starting at rank 4 and while have two different options from then and on. The option to auto level up has also been included.

That’s all we were able to gather from the multiplayer portion of BioWare’s new trailer. Anything we missed? Are you excited for the upcoming demo on the 14th? Let us know in the comments below!

Call of Duty 9 and Elite 2.0 Set For 2012 Release, “Meaningful Innovation to the Franchise” Promised

During Activision’s Q4 earnings call, the publisher confirms that the next installment in the Call of Duty franchise is indeed coming this year.

In the last few months, all signs pointed to another Call of Duty in 2012, from domain registration for Black Ops 2 to Treyarch developers hints at features such as Zombies. This isn’t shocking news as several studios alternate to develop Call of Duty titles on yearly basis. Eric Hirshberg announced today that “this year, we expect to further expand our presence with the launch of an all-new epic first person shooter title under the Call of Duty brand.” He added, “from what we’ve seen the game already looks fantastic and will bring meaningful innovation to the franchise. I could not be more excited.”

Regarding the Elite platform, Eric  promised Modern Warfare 3 players to expect “additional features in the next 60 days.” He stated, “We plan to keep our foot on the gas with Call of Duty Elite. Although we are pleased with where we are today, the objective of Elite is to make the total Call of Duty experience more fun and more engaging and we plan to launch additional features in the next 60 days.” Of course , Elite isn’t going anywhere,  and we can expect it to become a part of every Call of Duty including this year’s. Hirshberg noted, “we’re already hard at work on Elite 2.0 with several innovative features being developed to work hand in hand with our next Call of Duty release.”

Personally, I’d like to see more emphasis on map design in multiplayer and dedicated servers added. Granted my two demands aren’t ‘meaningful innovations’, but this is my short wish list for this year’s CoD. What innovations would you like to see in the next Call of Duty?

Thanks, EuroGamer

No Fix for CoD4 Hacks Soon, MW3 Playlist Limitations and Incoming PC Patch

Infinity Ward Creative Strategist, Robert Bowling, comments on the state of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and answers burning questions about the future of Modern Warfare 3.

Many “CoD heads” to this day still proclaim Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare the peak of the Modern Warfare — or even the entire Call of Duty franchise — and still play it lovingly. The community is definitely alive among PC players (check out this awesome Fragmovie using Promod Live), but the same cannot be said for their console brethren. If you’ve revisited the original Modern Warfare on either the PS3 or Xbox 360, chances are you’ve come across more than a fair share of hacked lobbies. The big question many fans have right now is why are these hackers not being addressed? “Priorities are given to newest games with higher player counts.” Stated Bowling. He added, “doesn’t mean we won’t but only have so much resources and time.” So while there is still a chance of something being done about this loathsome plague of online gaming, gamers will have to wait until Modern Warfare 3 nears perfection.

Speaking of Modern Warfare 3, Bowling recently answered some burning questions regarding its future.

“Can we get an aim assist enable/diable feature added? There is an option for it in survival but not multiplayer,” asked one fan. Bowling explains, “It’s been discussed but we aren’t fans of it in MP because it leads to players having different experiences.” If you’ve been wondering why a limit is placed on the number of available playlists in MW3, Bowling explains that “there is a philosophic reason and technical. 1st – too many playlists hurts matchmaking. Also limit from code standpoint.” Read more about community playlist details here. Many fans have also been pleading for older Modern Warfare maps to make their way into the upcoming MW3 DLC. Bowling explains, “I can’t commit to that. Right now I can only commit to what we’ve announced which is Piazza, Liberation, and Overwatch.”

Check out the new map, Overwatch, here!

It looks like PC players awaiting the new playlist, Infected, won’t have to wait much longer, according to Bowling. It will be ready “as soon as we can get the patch out that includes [Infected].” He added, “I was told it’d be a week, that was 1 week ago. So, soon?”

Modern Warfare 3: Spawn Improvements Incoming and Community Playlists Details

Infinity Ward’s Creative Strategist, Robert Bowling, touches on spawn logic, and several issues regarding the community playlists.

Even with all the spawn logic fixes already implemented in Modern Warfare 3, there’s room for improvement. Robert Bowling has stated that we can expect more work on the spawn logic. Bowling explained, “I have no details, but we are looking at what could further improve it [spawn logic].” He went on to add, “we’re working on some Demolition spawn tweaks now.” In regards to the community playlists, Bowling stated that changes to gun loadouts are possible. Infected already saw a change since it was introduced last weekend. Bowling noted, “the community playlists are designed to be influenced by community feedback.” One tweak that would mess with the balance of ‘Infected’ is removing the throwing knife. Bowling shed some light on why it will not be taken out, Infinity Ward is “trying to find a balance. No throwing knife games end in stand off with Survivors held up where Infected can’t get.” Bowling explained on Twitter the way the team behind Infinity Ward goes about deciding which gametype is added to the community playlist. “The first two were decided based on player counts in Private Match,” according to Bowling. Gun Game is “possible. If there’s enough demand for it.”

What’s your favorite private match gamemode? Let us know in the comments below.

Twisted Metal – Tuning Missiles and Demo Expired

As in any online multiplayer game, players will complain about weapons and vehicles being “over powered”. It’s very common for developers to go back and release patches that would make these weapons weaker or dumbed down.

Jaffe has commented on these issues, such as the missiles, stating that the team will not be dumbing down anything in the game. However,  “the TMA crew (Twisted Metal fan forums) too much to just ignore,” stated Jaffe regarding the issues the fans brought up. “If we can tune for what they want game may actually get deeper,” Jaffe explained on Twitter, but he emphasized “not sure how it will go but no dumbing down.” As we reported earlier, the team over at ESP will continue to support Twisted Metal after launch, making sure that there aren’t any huge bugs or issues.

Concerning the Twisted Metal demo. As stated earlier, the demo would only stay up on PSN for a limited amount of time. Yesterday, it was confirmed that the demo would stay live until the 13th. Well it seems that this might have changed. The demo has been taken off PSN on schedule to the original removal date. No word on whether the demo will be coming back, but they are looking in on the issue. Upon launching the demo, players will receive an error code stating that “the content has expired and is no longer available.”

Battlefield 3 – DICE Admits “Lots of Things Need Improvement”

Community Manager, Daniel Matros, assures the Battlefield community that DICE is listening and suggests communication improvements between developers and players.

Over the past month or so, Battlefield 3 community managers have been under slight criticism for an apparent lack of attention towards the BF3 community and for DICE’s overall lack of updates. But to give praise where it’s due, DICE has shown a high standard for listening to player feedback, making their recent inactivity all the more noticeable. Of course, at the same time, it’s safe to say DICE is definitely hard at work on a couple of things; one being the upcoming patch, and the other being the incoming DLC announcement due sometime this week.

Also, in cased you missed it, a PS3 patch recently went live addressing the VoIP issues many players have been experiencing.

Mr. Matros recently took the time to address the Battlefield community and suggested some improvements the DICE team could be making. He admitted, “we need to be more open with our anti-cheat efforts and our updates regarding the game.” I’m sure many would be happy to hear this. He also stressed the importance of “researching the community over all different portals” in order to note the wishes of the overall community, rather than primarily the “vocal haters”. He added that it “takes time but is important.” He also suggested that “a good plan for the future is to plan the patch together with the community. Needs some organizing but would give good results.” He added, “I want to keep the community informed.”

In more exciting news, Matros stated earlier today, “read through tons of posts, talked to some people. Tomorrow I’m going to present it all in-house. Lots of things need improvement.” Could we be seeing a change in the way DICE communicates with Battlefield 3 players? Hopefully, some good things will come out of it.

We want to hear your thoughts. Let us know in the comments below, what improvements could DICE be making to better serve the Battlefield community?

Modern Warfare 3 Elite: Two Spec Ops Missions and New Map in March

Activision has revealed Modern Warfare 3’s content drops for 360 Elite paid members set to release in March.

The two new missions are Black Ice and Negotiator. The new map is called Black Box, which used to be called Morningwood. Only two pieces of content were going to be released in March, but Raven Software opted to add a third one in a new mission, Negotiator. Raven Software opted to add an extra piece of content for May, which brings the total amount of content drops over the season to 21, not 20.

Earlier today, we reported on February’s content drop, which consists of only one map, Overwatch.
