Twisted Metal Matchmaking Status Update and Other Concerns

Twisted Metal’s David Jaffe discusses the studio’s progress on matchmaking along with other issues.

  • Text error is being addressed where it says network error when it should be room full error.
  • Working on it constantly
  • It’s on Sony server side
  • Party System is being addressed where players can’t invite friends
  • Ranking system being addressed
  • Split Parties being looked into. Players who are in a party and join a game would be split apart. Whether this is due to balancing is not known to Jaffe as he hasn’t gotten the chance to play the retail game yet.
  • Skin system will be live later on today (Feb 16th, Jaffe is in Las Vegas and published the video on Feb 15th)*.

*The skin system is not 100% for sure as Sony has told Jaffe on multiple occasions that the skin system would be live before launch, then followed by another update saying on launch date.

Here’s the video update that David Jaffe posted. (NSFW)

Robert Bowling Sympathizes With Modern Warfare 3 Fans Over DLC Exclusivity

Infinity Ward Creative Strategist, Robert Bowling, comments on the negative response that the recent Call of Duty: Elite Content Drop 3 trailer has been receiving. If you haven’t seen the newly revealed Overwatch map, check it out right here.

As of right now, the YouTube video of this trailer is at an almost 50/50 split between likes and dislikes. In a conversation with fans on Twitter, Robert Bowling mentions, “I would assume that accounts more for distaste for our non-Xbox players having to wait for the content, which I agree with.”

If you look at the current set up that Activision has set up for DLC, CoD: Elite Premium members receive DLC before Non-Premium members. Xbox 360 Elite Premium members receive DLC before anyone else, even before Premium members on other platforms. This is obviously the result of a marketing deal between Activision and Microsoft. Now, Xbox 360 CoD: Elite Premium members number at around 1.5 million players. Compare that to the 20 million Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 players. Naturally, the 18.5 million players who aren’t CoD: Elite Premium members on the Xbox 360 are going to be pretty upset and according to Bowling’s conversations, he agrees.

What does this mean? Nothing really. This type of marketing scheme is out of the hands of Infinity Ward, Sledghammer Games and Raven Software, all developers of Modern Warfare 3. However, at least this proves that Modern Warfare 3 fans aren’t crazy after all, and that at least one person over on the other end of the developmental wall feels the same way.

It looks Call of Duty fans around the world will simply have to wait until the day DLC is dropped simultaneously across all platforms. Unfortunately, given the current trends in the videogame industry, this doesn’t seem likely.

Bowling also sympathizes with fans when it comes to Modern Warfare 3 updates.  Lately, the recent patches have also been released at separate times with the PS3 and PC versions constantly being delayed. “I wish we could get to a place where its day and date updating,” mentioned Bowling. Meaning, he wishes he could give us actual dates for incoming patches. He added, “DLC is one thing but patches should not be delayed.”

Make sure to read up on some of the features included in the upcoming patch for consoles.

When asked for any news regarding DLC on the PC, Bowling commented, “no date announced as of right now.”

Let us know your thoughts in the comments below! We know you have some.

Modern Warfare 3 Patch 1.09 to Bring New Prestige Levels, Music Volume Update, and Theater Fixes

Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling has revealed some of the additions and fixes that the next title update, patch 1.09, will include for Modern Warfare 3.

Recently, five new prestige levels were added to the PC version of  Modern Warfare 3 with the latest update to the platform. Interestingly, the PC version also received an additional five prestige emblems to bring the tally of prestige levels to 20. Robert Bowling promised that Xbox 360 and PS3 users will also receive the new levels; however, it was unclear if it would be via a hotfix or patch 1.09. Now, Modern Warfare 3’s creative strategist explained that “it should be added in the next title updates for those platforms [Xbox 360 and PS3],” but unfortunately he doesn’t have a firm release date at the moment. Some fans, including MP1st readers, were put off by the decision of adding new prestige levels to MW3, Robert Bowling argued that “its nice to have an option to keep going further, even if you choose not to do it.”

Also, “HD video uploads for PS3 are currently planned in an upcoming title update for MW3,” according to Bowling. Further, an Infinity Ward developer has confirmed that music volume issue will be fixed soon, stating “the patch containing the music adjustment is going into submission [presumably, the console manufacturers certification process] very soon.” Hopefully, after the next title update, you’ll be able to turn down the in game music in order to rely more on the sounds of the enemies’ footsteps, reloads, and such.

Earlier today, a new trailer was released for the upcoming map, Overwatch.

Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Demo Impressions

Mass Effect fans have eagerly been awaiting this Valentines Day to spend time with the ones they love the most… that is if they happen to be blue, green or bird-like aliens. Yesterday, BioWare officially released the Mass Effect 3 demo and MP1st is here to give you our thoughts on the co-op multiplayer, Galaxy at War, that comes packed in with it – something brand new for the Mass Effect franchise.

For those who need a refresher, the multiplayer is currently only available to those who’ve unlocked it via various code offerings as well as to those who’ve registered their Battlefield 3 online pass on either the Xbox 360 or PS3, or to those of have played Battlefield 3 online on the PC. The multiplayer will become available to everyone starting on the 17th.

Booting up the demo, your ears will be treated to some of the finest menu music around, something that I think needs to be mentioned. ME3’s soundtrack is shaping up to be both emotional and epic. Upon selecting the multiplayer option, players will immediately be brought to a character selection screen. Here, you will get to choose among six of Mass Effect 3’s classes; the Adept, a dangerous biotic user; the Soldier, who excels in combat; the Engineer, a tech specialist; the Sentinal, a mix of biotic and tech; the Infiltrator, a stealthy class with tech abilities; and the Vanguard, a close-quarter-combat biotic user. Initially, only the human race is selectable. However, once more become available, you’ll gain access to a slightly different set of powers within the same class. Different races also handle differently. Humans are much more nimble than Krogan, after all. Each character levels up separately and players can have up to any number of characters in use at once.

Update: As a small correction, each class levels up separately. This means that two or more characters in the same class will share experience and will always be at the same level. Also, the number of levels you have in each class add up to form your N7 rank.

After choosing a name, the color of your armor, and your first Recruit Pack in the store (a pack of 5 random items that range from weapons, weapon mods, character unlocks, and other one-time-use items), you’re all set to deploy. Keep in mind that once you earn enough credits (gained by completing in-game objectives), you can always re-visit the store to purchase another random Recruitment Pack or go for the more expensive Veteran Pack which will net you at least 1 uncommon item or better.

Personally, I have yet to decide whether or not I like the idea of random unlocks. While it can add longevity and a bit of uncertainty to the unlock system, it can also be frustrating waiting for that one character you want, or you could just end up getting items you’re not really interested in.

Once you’ve deployed your character, you can view and train your powers, tweak your weapon loadout, fiddle with mods, and select equipment earned from these randoms packs purchasable in the store. Equipment ranges from extra ammunition, extra health, and a self-revive kit, all for use in-game.

Once satisfied, you can now create or join a public match. Only two maps are available in this demo; Firebase Ghost and Firebase White. In this demo, however, keeping it set to Unkown Location will grant those involved a 10% experience bonus. The type of enemy is also selectable, but for the sake of this demo, you’ll only be scrapping with Cerberus soldiers and mechs. Bronze, Silver, and Gold-level difficulties are also selectable. Keep in mind that these matches are playable with a minimum of only two players. If you’re going in as a duo, you’ll definitely want to keep the difficulty low.

The multiplayer controls much like Mass Effect 2; however, there are no power or weapon wheels. This means you’ll be tapping the shoulder buttons and Y/Triangle to use your assigned powers. Switching between your primary and secondary weapon is accomplished by holding the reload button while your heavy weapon is assigned to the directional pad up. Your equipment is assigned to the rest of the d-pad buttons. The melee button can either be tapped for a quick combination of attacks or held down for a much more powerful blow. Moving between cover is much more fluid this time around and characters are much more nimble. Now players can dodge and roll in different directions which comes in extremely handy when an Atlas fires a missile at your head. Once again, players will have a regenerating shield to keep an eye on, but health is only replenished in chunks until a med-kit is used.

Combat was already very tight in Mass Effect 2, and when translated to co-operative multiplayer, it’s extremely satisfying. Enemies are tough, smart, and great at working together. It’s best to either prioritize which enemies need to be taken down first, or split them up amongst your squad. After all, some team members will be much more effective at taking out certain enemies than others. With the large number of powers at each players’ disposal, teamwork can be extremely rewarding. Communication is key if you want to breeze by your opponents quickly. Each area of both maps are individually named, making is easy to call out enemy locations.

Matches are round-based – up to 10, to be precise. Upon completing the 10th wave, you’ll have accomplished your mission which, for better or for worse, is not an easy task at lower levels or without a full squad of soldiers. Each round increases in difficulty and varies in the objective at hand. Objectives are randomized in each round and consist of either eliminating a wave of enemies, taking out certain key targets, hacking a terminal, or gathering intel from different locations, all within a set amount of time. This keeps the gameplay interesting and focused.

Rewards are given to players for completing certain tasks like achieving a certain number of kills or assists and all add up to your total experience earned which can be used to train powers.

To conclude, I found Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer to be surprisingly fun, addicting and polished, despite some wonky camera glitches. I think many worried Mass Effect fans can enjoy a sigh of relief and look forward to the full version on March 6th. For now, I highly recommend downloading the demo for a taste both Mass Effect 3’s truly spectacular single player experience and engaging multiplayer.

Stay tuned for a full review of Mass Effect 3: Galaxy at War.

DICE Updates Battlefield 3 Servers on PS3 and Xbox 360 and Fixes Punkbuster Issues

As an update to yesterday’s announcement regarding server maintenance on the PS3 and Xbox 360, Battlefield 3 Community Manager, Daniel Matros, reveals the purpose behind the down-time and informs players of the current state of the recent Punkbuster issues.

On the Battlelog, Matros wrote, “In the light of previous events such as the PB issues that flared up yesterday as well as Console players having some connectivity issues and issues with actually joining servers, we decided that we would perform a little bit of maintenance and a restart to solve connectivity and server issues.”

In addition, “for players who were getting kicked yesterday due to corrupt file/memory, this issue was solved yesterday evening and was because of a version mismatch between the updated client and Punkbuster.” To conclude, “thank you for understanding and have a great day/evening!”
Servers should now be back up and running so get on arming those m-coms and capping those flags!

Twisted Metal Matchmaking Fix Coming, PS3 Hardware Issues Being Looked Into

Twisted Metal has finally been released, but the online multiplayer is off to a rough start.

For many (including myself) who have been trying to join a game over the past few hours have been encountering various network errors. When trying to join a game, an error would show up stating there is a network error while joining the game. Some users are reporting that even after they have joined a game, they would be kicked out due to another error stating that they have poor connection.

The team over at Eat, Sleep, Play have been hearing everyone, and David has come out with an official statement via Twitter. “Matchmaking update: matchmaking going offline for 10-20 min, so Sony can install code that when servers return will make matchmaking much more stable.”

Another issue that users are experiencing is that their systems are freezing and even overheating. This has become more common with the 60GB models of the Playstation 3 as David Jaffe had said it was an issue with the Demo. He has alerted SDQA about this issue and is sorry if it’s happening. He also stated “if it’s on the software end- can’t solve tonight”

A Patch Costs $40,000 on Xbox 360 and PS3

Double Fine’s Tim Schafer has been rather chatty lately. In case you haven’t heard, Schafer and his team over at Double Fine took to Kickstarter to raise money for an old-school point and click adventure game. In the last five days, fans have pledged over $1,750,000 for the project. Learn more about Double Fine Adventure.

In an interview with Hookshot, Schafer shed some light on how much it costs to release a patch on Xbox 360 and PS3 (he was referring to modern consoles). Schafer explained, “those systems as great as they are, they’re still closed. You have to jump through a lot of hoops, even for important stuff like patching and supporting your game. Those are things we really want to do, but we can’t do it on these systems. I mean, it costs $40,000 to put up a patch – we can’t afford that! Open systems like Steam, that allow us to set our own prices, that’s where it’s at, and doing it completely alone like Minecraft. That’s where people are going.”

Battlefield 3 “Big Announcement” Still On The Way, EA Comments on BF2143 DLC

The big question on many Battlefield 3 players’ minds is what happened to the “big announcement” that was supposed to take place last week? If you haven’t been keeping up, a few weeks ago, EA VP of Investor Relations, Peter C. Ausnit, mentioned that we could be hearing an announcement during a New York EA event that passed last week – possibly something of upcoming DLC. Though this did not end up happening, there is still hope, according to Community Manager, Ian Tornay.

Tornay spoke with Battlefield fans on Reddit and explained the situation: “I think, as another Redditor pointed out, there’s been some confusion as to what was going to happen. It’s a big time at EA right now – we’re starting to work on new titles, figuring out how to close up our year, and planning for the months to come.” Check out what was mentioned about EA’s Medal of Honor franchise and future Battlefield 3 DLC. Tornay continued, “that being said, we do have something really cool for you guys and (if I understand correctly) we didn’t want to smoosh it in with a bunch of other stuff. We definitely have information coming – stay tuned.”

Tornay also mentioned that DICE has teams working on several upcoming goodies – “One on updates and fixes, one on DLC.” Check out some of the info we’ve gathered so far on the upcoming patch here. On top of the recently rumored “all American expansion”, Battlefield 2143 is also a very popular idea among the Battlefield community when it comes to DLC options. Tornay commented on its possibility: “There is a lot of enthusiasm inside DICE for 2143 – they love it as much as you guys do, too. Of course it’s an option. Is it more likely than anything else that’s been suggested? Not as far as I know. So, not a yes, not a no.”

It looks like Battlefield fans will just have to keep patient for a little while longer to see what exactly DICE is working on. Any thoughts on what it might be? Let us know in the comments below and make sure to stay tuned to MP1st to keep an eye on any upcoming Battlefield 3 announcements!

Bullet Time In Max Payne 3 Multiplayer: How Will It Work?

As we all know, one of Max Payne’s signature moves is his ability to slow down time while while diving through the air wielding dual pistols as be blasts through his enemies with surgical precision. The big question on many multiplayer enthusiast’s minds is how well could something like this translate over to the multiplayer portion of the upcoming Max Payne 3. According to Rockstar Games, it can.

Answering fans in a recent Q&A session, Rockstar explains that “Max Payne’s multiplayer is all about taking the physicality and tech of Max’s movement and shooting abilities and translating that directly into multiplayer in a way that fits with the overall story and the themes of the game…” In this case, it would make sense to carry the Bullet Time ability over to the MP, and luckily, Rockstar mentioned that “getting Bullet Time right in the multiplayer experience is a huge priority.” But how? How do you give players the ability to slow down time without affecting the time flow of others? Well, according to Rockstar, “Bullet Time in multiplayer works via line of sight rather than applying to the whole level, or to a bubble around the player.” Does this mean time slows down only for those in your line of sight? If so, how do these players “catch up” back to the normal time flow? It will certainly be interesting to see it in action.

Rockstar also explained that “while Bullet Time is Max’s special ability, it is just one of a range of special abilities  – called Bursts – that you’ll find in multiplayer.”

It looks like we’ll just have to wait and see exactly how Bullet Time will work out in multiplayer. For now, let us hear your thoughts! Make sure to stay tuned to MP1st for more Max Payne 3 multiplayer news.

Update: Red Dead Redemption did include the “Dead Eye” ability in multiplayer, but time was not slowed down for the shooter.

Activision Responds to Modern Warfare 3’s Weak January NPD Numbers

Activision Publishing CEO, Eric Hirshberg, explains why Modern Warfare 3 sales in January were significantly lower than Black Ops’ in the same month last year.

During January 2011, Blacks Ops sold 750,000 copies according to NPD figures. However, Modern Warfare 3 managed to only move 386,000 units, as reported by Gaming Bolt. This decline suggests that the franchise, which has over 40 million monthly players, might have hit its peak. When questioned regarding the aforementioned numbers, Eric Hirshberg stated, in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, “I think they moved forward. We broke the record for the biggest day and the biggest first five days and the biggest first 16 days. That came as a result of us putting together a very effective pre-sale programme and a very effective launch. Part of that was we drew more buyers forward in the process which is a good thing because we’re convincing more people to buy it, some of them sight-unseen based on the past performance of the strength and fun of the franchise, and some of them very early as it comes out closest to launch. When you have such a successful pre-order programme and such a successful launch week I don’t think it’s surprising that the shape of the curve after that looks a little different than the year before.”

Hirshberg also mentioned that the competition Modern Warfare 3 faced during the holidays was stiff. He stated, “I would also say there was a lot of great competition in the fourth quarter, there was a lot of must have games that launched right around the same time, and there was also a lot of aggressive pricing activity, and those were two contributions as well.”

Hirshberg elaborated on Activision’s pricing model for Call of Duty titles. As you might have noticed, Call of Duty titles tend to retain their value longer than other games. Eric Hirshberg explained “That takes a stomach of steel because we haven’t really changed our pricing patterns to match or respond to a lot of the more aggressive stuff that’s going on elsewhere in the industry. But I believe in the value of games, there’s no other form of entertainment that delivers hundreds of hours of entertainment. They’re very costly to make, they’re very risky propositions and holding strong on the value they deliver is really important.”

Do you think that Call of Duty has run its course, and we will start to see a decline in future sales? Notably, Activision did promise “meaningful innovations” in this year’s title.

Over 40 Million Monthly Players Across Call of Duty Franchise, Breakdown by Title

During a recent earnings call, Activision Publishing CEO, Eric Hirshberg, announced that the Call of Duty series sees more than 40 million active monthly users over 2011.

Hirshberg broke down the active monthly players of the most recent Call of Duty titles. Expectedly, Modern Warfare 3 has the biggest piece of the pie with 20 million players; Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2 follow with 10 million and 5 million, respectively. Eric explained, “in 2011, the franchise is estimated to have had over 40 million monthly active users across 5 Call of Duty titles. In terms of MAUs in December alone, Modern Warfare 3 exceeded 20 million; Black Ops exceeded 10 million; Modern Warfare 2 exceeded 5 million; and World at War and Modern Warfare, which launched 3 and 4 years ago, respectively, had more than 2.5 million monthly active users combined.”

Hirshberg also touched on Call of Duty Elite’s launch numbers. He stated, “Call of Duty Elite, which only launched last quarter, already has more than 7 million registered members and within that, more than 1.5 million players have already activated a premium annual membership, establishing Call of Duty Elite as the third largest interactive subscription service behind only World of Warcraft and Xbox LIVE, both of which, as you know, have been around for many years.”

Battlefield Community Managers, Ian Tornay and Daniel Matros respond to community requests such as the ever-sought-after spectator mode, VoIP on PC and Input Lag fixes on PS3.

In response to one reddit thread titled “Voip, Battlecorder, Spectate Mode, new UI… I will not buy any future DLC until these exist….” (which nicely sums up how a number of BF3 fans currently feel), Ian Tornay assured, “we hear you loud and clear and are looking into solution and improvements for all of these things. Definitely appreciate your patience.” He added, “and we’re still investigating and looking into these things.” Currently, VoIP on PC is missing while everyone is awaiting some sort of spectator mode or “Battlerecorder.” Also said to be in the works is a new user interface (UI), especially for PC players. However, Tornay also mentioned, “the one thing that I take issue with on the OP is that these are not easy things.” Now, you may have heard this many-a-times by now, but it’s nice to know that members of the DICE team are working on it and have not forgotten.

We recently reported DICE acknowledging their lack of communication with the Battlefield community – admitting “a lot of things need improvement.” Following up on the matter, Daniel Matros assures fans further that DICE is “all over that code and fixes right now.” We, and many others, hope to hear something of the upcoming patch soon. Matros also agreed with upset followers, sincerely stating “we need a more open dialogue with the people who take time to play our games.”

While DICE has recently patched the PS3 VoIP issues, it seems like they still may have a ways to go until the matter of input lag is solved. More and more, PS3 users are wondering if any progress at is being made at all. Matros recently commented, “can’t say it’s a mystery but we’ve been getting mixed results from different experiments.” He added, “…it’s very inconsistent. We’ve been trying it out over here for some months and some tv’s get more and some less.” At least something is being done about the issue and at least we are beginning to see more transparency from community leaders such as Daniel Matros about the subject.

Let’s hope things start looking up as fans will soon be treated to a nice little patch, and hopefully some DLC news!

EA COO Talks Military Shooters – Medal of Honor and Battlefield DLC

Chief Operating Officer of Electronic Arts, Peter Moore, talks about what’s next for EA and what shooter fans can look forward to in the near future.

Can’t get enough of first-person shooters? Well, there definitely won’t be a shortage of them any time soon. One of EA’s biggest focuses over the next couple of year will be – surprise, surprise – military shooters. Recently, Kotaku spoke with Moore and dug up some more details about what’s in store for both the Medal of Honor and Battlefield franchises.

Though it may seem like the FPS genre is becoming more and more congested, Moore would seem to disagree. “I think the genre is big enough, and they’re different experiences,” referring to both Battlefield and Medal of Honor. Moore spoke of the differences between “environments we do in Battlefield” and “what we’ve done in the past for a game like Medal of Honor, which is a little bit more squad-based, close combat.” He added, “I think there are subgenres within the FPS that we can make a difference in.”

Medal of Honor 2 has yet to be officially announced, though it was teased in the invitations set out to a upcoming press event. Hopefully we will hear an announcement and more details sooner than later. Also teased to be revealed at a recent New York event was an announcement of Battlefield 3 DLC. However, this has yet to happen.

With over 11 million online Battlefield 3 players, Kotaku asked Moore how EA plans on keeping these gamers hooked. Of course, one option is DLC. “And as you can imagine, we’re working on that,” stated Moore.

Moore, also mentioned the Bad Company series but there’ll be more on that in an upcoming exclusive article. So, stay tuned!
