World War Z: Aftermath Horde Mode XL Crawls Out Tomorrow With a New Map

As announced earlier this year, World War Z: Aftermath’s Horde Mode XL is launching fairly soon on January 24, adding even more action to the zombie shooter title.

As the update nears release, PlayStation released a new trailer celebrating its launch. Check it out:

To accommodate the slew of zombies that will be heading your way, Horde Mode XL takes place on a new map that’s centered around a mall. A survivor camp is found there, and your task is to prevent the hordes of zombies from reaching the camp.

There are three potential areas where the zombies will come from. First is the Restaurant Area, with zombies coming from the nearby village and temple. There’s also the Riverside Area, where you’re going to need to stop zombies coming from the city. Finally, the Construction Area will have zombies pouring through a nearby factory. With three different locations to protect and defend, it’ll definitely make for quite the challenge.

Of course, with Horde Mode XL piling zombie wave after zombie wave against you and your team, you’ll need more than just good guns to get the job done. By using defenses scattered around the map, you can use supplies to activate them and deal tons of damage to the zombie horde. You’ll need to gather enough supplies to engage the defenses, however, so you’ll have to set the defenses up while taking down any nearby zombies with your firearms.

Aside from Horde Mode XL, a new weapon progression system will be introduced. This system will not factor in skins when it comes to your weapon’s stats, and you’ll instead work with weapon perk slots to customize your loadout. As part of the new system, you’ll also get to unlock a bunch of free skins, so there’s a good reason to grind.

We anticipate that there’s going to be a patch with this new content, and once it’s out, we’ll let our readers know.

The Last of Us HBO Series Episode Two Review: Perfectly Terrifying

Episode 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us series “Infected” is the perfect balance of expanding the story as well as a live action representation of the game. In doing so, episode director and The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann knocks it out of the park delivering a perfect episode and one that I think will please long time fans and win over some new ones.

Starting with a flashback or sorts to 2003, we see pretty much how the cordyseps pandemic started in Jakarta, Indonesia. It’s economic in its storytelling and chilling in its implications. Providing context for newcomers with exactly how the virus works. Told mostly from the perspective of Professor Ratna (Christine Hakim) as she is brought in to first view a sample in a microscope, then perform an autopsy with horrifying revelations to the quiet dread across her face as she hears more details that tell her that this is the end of everything and tells the soldier that they need to bomb the city and everyone in it if they hope to contain it. Hakim’s performance sells it perfectly. It’s a bone chilling cold open in every sense of the word.

Afterwards we meet up again with Ellie, Joel and Tess who deal with the aftermath of the revelation that Ellie has been bitten and yet hasn’t turned. Joel would just as soon put a bullet in Ellie’s head while Tess seems to be very interested in the implications of Ellie’s seeming immunity. From there the trio attempt to make their way across Boston and we’re introduced to another new addition to the The Last of Us lore, the notion that the infected are all connected and that stepping on a tendril miles away could awaken the sleeping monsters and like a homing beacon, they will descend on that location. Foreshadowing? Nah. Couldn’t be.

Seeing what’s left of Boston in the daytime is incredible. I marveled at how the production design, art design, set dressing and the digital effects all came together to make an incredibly believable world. I can imagine a lot of “How did they do that?” questions from viewers as they’re watching. Toppled, blown out buildings, green vines overgrown, abandoned vehicles strewn about, the fungus vines that lead up to doors. There’s a ton of money being spent on this show and it’s all on screen.

This leads to the episodes best scene as they are forced to cut through a museum. Once inside it becomes very clear they’re not alone and the seemingly abandoned museum is in fact occupied by two clickers. Fans of the game know what an “Oh shit” moment this is but even knowing that, the way Druckmann directs the scene is truly white knuckle suspenseful. The sound design is peak excellence as the clickers move through, at first just wandering around but later hunting their prey. The reveal of their practical design is truly jaw dropping, especially for someone who played the game many times, to see it realized in the flesh. It’s an excellent set piece that honestly makes me want to see Druckmann direct some horror movies.

True to The Last of Us it has a heartbreaking conclusion that plays out much like the section of the game did, with a spin that uses that aforementioned foreshadowing that shows exactly what can and does happen if those connected infected wake up.

It should be noted that Anna Torv plays Tess here to pure perfection. You can clearly see how she sees hope in a hopeless world through Ellie, as if she was always holding on to it but never thought she would actually see it. She’s fantastic here.

The Last of Us is a game got players attached to characters and broke their hearts in equal measure and the shows is clearly going for the same thing. Episode 2 is the best example of that while scaring the shit out of you along the way.

Score: 10/10

Pros:

  • The cold open is bone-chilling and provides a good bit of expanded lore while servicing newcomers as well
  • The production design of this show is astounding across the board
  • The scene in the museum is masterfully done
  • Anna Torv is fantastic as Tess

Cons:

  • Nothing. Literally nothing.

Mass Effect Writer Mac Walters Leaves BioWare After 19 Years

Mac Walters, who headed the writing of sci-fi games Mass Effect 2 and 3, has left BioWare after 19 years of being in the company. The news broke out via Walter’s official LinkedIn profile, where he expressed the difficulty in making such a decision.

Here’s the full message:

With a new year comes new adventures.

As some of you already know, at the end of last year I decided to leave BioWare. These past 19 years have been a life-changing experience to say the least, and it made the choice to go very difficult. I’ve worked with so many wonderful people and had the privilege to be a part of the most amazing teams and projects. It’s hard to fathom it all, and I know I’ll be reflecting on it for years to come.

Thank you to everyone I’ve had the joy of working with, and I wish everyone at BioWare the very best in everything you do. It’s truly been a pleasure.

You can check out the actual LinkedIn post here.

Walter notes that the decision was “very difficult,” though it seems like he left the game studio on good terms based on how fondly he mentions his time at BioWare. While Walter is known for his writing contributions in Mass Effect 2 and 3, he also served as the production director for the upcoming RPG Dragon Age: Dreadwolf.

Based on the LinkedIn post, he left the company at the end of last year, so we’re unsure how this affects Dreadwolf’s development. The game already entered Alpha stage in October, however, with an in-game cinematic trailer showcasing a little of what’s to come, so development’s likely already well underway.

Modern Warfare 2 Hardcore Mode Incoming in Season 2

If you’ve been wondering where hardcore mode is in the latest Call of Duty game, you’re not the only one. Thankfully, that’s about to change next month, as Modern Warfare 2 Hardcore mode has been confirmed to be included in Season 2 by Infinity Ward!

This was announced by the studio today over on Twitter:

As you can see, a blog post for Season 2’s multiplayer new additions are being pushed out this coming week! Chances are, we’ll also hear about the Season 2 new map, new weapons and more!

Set to launch on February 15, Season 2 for both Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 will also feature Ranked Play for multiplayer, a new smaller map for Warzone 2, DMZ new additions and more! We got the tease for it last week, but prepare for a deluge of info set to drop this coming week.

For those not familiar with how Hardcore mode works in multiplayer shooters, it’s a more “realistic” take on gunfights, as it usually means that 1-2 bullets will be enough to down an enemy. Not only that, but the HUD and UI are also taken out to make the game slower and a bit more tactical.

Once we know more info about Hardcore mode and whatever stuff is being prepped for Season 2, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Main Menu Concept Looks Like the Real Deal in Motion

While we’re still quite far off from Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man sequel, one content creator has taken it upon themselves to whip up a Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 main menu concept mock up, and it looks damn impressive!

Created by YouTuber ItIsSpid, the start up screen to the main menu looks like it’s the real deal, and we even see the game’s (mock up) options and save slots. This is one impressive piece of work, which you can see below.

The content creator states that they modded Marvel’s Spider-Man for this one, which doesn’t diminish its awesomeness.

After the tremendous support on the last title screen / main menu concept for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, I made a MUCH SUPERIOR version using mods in Spider-Man PC!

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the next game in PlayStation’s critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise. Developed by Insomniac Games in collaboration with Marvel Games and PlayStation for the PS5 console.
I hope you enjoy my concept of the main menu of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 / Spider-Man PS5. Remember, nothing official here, it is only a concept.

While Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 still doesn’t have a set release date just yet, it’s currently scheduled to swing its way out in “Fall 2023” on the PS5.

343 Reaffirms Commitment to Halo Franchise, Will Continue to Develop Halo Games Now and “in the Future”

With layoffs affecting at Microsoft affecting 343 Industries and a new rumor stating that the studio has canned development on Halo Infinite’s campaign DLCs, it seems the studio’s boss felt a statement was needed to assuage fan concerns.

Over on Twitter, Pierre Hintze, studio head of 343 Industries posted a message confirming the studio’s commitment and involvement in the Halo franchise.

Halo and Master Chief are here to stay.

343 Industries will continue to develop Halo now and in the future, including epic stories, multiplayer, and more of what makes Halo great.

Pierre Hintze

Studio Head

Mind, this doesn’t confirm or deny the Halo Infinite campaign DLC rumors, nor does it state that anything new is being development. Let’s hope that whatever 343 has planned for the franchise, it’ll be better received than Halo Infinite.

Would you want 343 to continue making Halo games or should another studio take a stab at it? Sound off in the comments.

Battlefield 2042 Season 4 to Be Called “Eleventh Hour,” Unreleased Specialist Details Revealed

While Battlefield 2042 players have update 3.2 to look forward to this month, the next major update for the game has already been confirmed to be Season 4. DICE hasn’t talked about it yet, which is understandable, but we at least now know that Battlefield 2042 Season 4 will be called “Eleventh Hour.”

This was leaked by reliable Battlefield dataminer temporyal who also datamined an unreleased BF2042 Specialist that will never see the light of day given the class rework that’s about to be implemented.

The unreleased Battlefield 2042 Specialist was named “Hale,” and had a drone as one of their abilities.

Note that same with any datamined info, none of these are confirmed, so take it with a grain of salt. If BF2042 Season 4 isn’t titled Eleventh Hour, don’t blame us. That said, temporyal has been very accurate with these datamines. Chances are, DICE will be talking about Season 4 soon once update 3.2 is out.

For more on the upcoming class rework, head on over here There’s also the first episode of “Inside Battlefield” airing this Monday, so stay tuned for that info drop.

Tchia Hands-On Preview – A Tropical Paradise

Studio Awaceb is set to deliver an incredible experience with its first title, Tchia. Before its release, MP1st was given a chance to get some time in with an early build. Read on for our hands-on impressions to find out exactly how it’s shaping up.

Putting the Soul in Exploration

At the heart of Tchia is ” soul-jumping;” a mechanic that allows you to hop into nearly any object and animal life within the open world. See that bird soaring in the sky? Or how about that sea turtle deep below the water? None of those are near you? Well, how about that rock? Or that coconut high in the tree? You could even take control of lanterns, a piece of wood, and other inanimate objects.

Everything is physics-driven too. When you soul jump into a heavy object like a boulder, you’ll feel clunky and slow, with rigid movement due to the shape. Compared to a coconut, where they’re generally well-rounded, it made moving around in the environment feel smoother, especially when going downhill. Other objects also feel lighter or heavier than others, so when they fall through the air or into the sea, they’ll react differently due to their weight or type of material.

This created some rather unique opportunities in the open world, as while traversing is in the veins of Breath of the Wild, in that you are free to go wherever you want, the physics reminded me more of Half-life, in that there is a lot of freedom in what you can do in your surroundings. It’s not as crazy as Half-life, mind you, it’s just more of an indicator of how much focus has been put into the physics.

There is also another mechanic known as soul throw. Soul throw allows you to exit an object that you soul jumped in order to slingshot it. While that may not seem helpful initially, the beauty of soul throw is that you can immediately soul jump into that thrown object, allowing you to easily travel across the map at a steady pace.

I was having an absolute blast with these two mechanics, so much so that I forgot about the main quest because I was having too much fun exploring the island and finding things to play with.

The only aspect of the soul jump that I wasn’t too fond of was that it ran off a meter. I can understand why, as the studio probably wouldn’t want people to stick with playing as a bird the whole time. But for the inanimate objects, it should have had an unlimited amount of possession time since those objects are stationary anyway. I found myself waiting for the brief seconds for the meter to refill to hop back into a rock, which broke the flow a bit. I’m sure we can upgrade it, so it’s not that big of a complaint.

Luckily, there are some things to counter that wait, as the character has a glider and a sailboat, with objects in the environment, such as a tree, functioning as a catapult. So while the soul jump does have its limitation, everything else around it felt it catered to make traversing a breeze. That made me want to explore since it was easy to go where I wanted and, if needed, to go back on track with the main quest.

Of course, when you aren’t goofing around with the game’s physics, you’ll likely be off exploring the many gorgeous locations scattered across the islands. High mountain tops, beautiful sandy beaches, coral-filled oceans, and lush green jungles. The world of Tchia is filled with variety, making it feel like an extraordinary place. There are collectibles and fun mini-games all over should you want to do some side activities.

One of my favorites so far is playing the ukulele. I may not be able to keep up with the notes sometimes (there’s an auto-play option too!) but hearing the soothing music performed always put me in a pleasantly relaxing mood. If you got the feeling of this being a “chilled” game from the trailers, well you’ll be glad to know it is.

That’s probably how I would describe my time with Tchia so far, a relaxing adventure that wants you to go at your own pace, with some of the most welcoming islanders you’ll ever meet in a video game. If studio Awaceb wanted me to leave feeling wholesome from my time playing, I’ll say they’ve done just that and more.

Closing Thoughts

Every year there is always a standout indie game that I heavily look forward to, and based on my hands-on experience with Tchia, I think it’s that title. From a gameplay perspective, Tchia knocks it out. It’s fun and charming, and frankly, feels like a breath of fresh air. I look forward to revisiting the full world that the New Caledonia inspired adventure has to offer this Summer, and hopefully we’ll be seeing you there too.

MP1st was given access to a preview build of Tchia for our hands-on session. Tchia is set to release in Spring 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5.

Kingdom Under Fire: A War of Heroes Is Under Fire After User Discovers Hidden Background Blockchain App

A recent Early Access game on Steam has gotten some degree of attention, but it’s not for the reasons you think. An old RPG/RTS title is currently available for free on the platform, but it apparently contains blockchain software bundled with the game.

The title in question is Kingdom Under Fire: A War of Heroes; a Korean game that was released way back in 2001. The store page claims that the game will receive a graphical update, hence the Early Access. It was released last December, though it’s only recently garnered more attention.

Here’s what the blockchain app, named Locus Game Chain, looks like:

There are a couple of things worth noting here. Firstly, the Steam Store page has no mention of the blockchain technology used in this version of the game. Secondly, Steam does not allow blockchain games on the platform. Here’s the last item under a list of “What you shouldn’t publish on Steam” found via Steamworks documentation:

Applications built on blockchain technology that issue or allow exchange of cryptocurrencies or NFTs.

According to discussions in the Twitter thread, it is possible to close the blockchain app and keep the game running, though it’d likely be more hassle than it’s worth. We’ll let you know of any developments surrounding this whole ordeal when we get them.

If you want to report the game’s shady blockchain wrongdoings, you can report it via it’s official Steam page.

Obsidian Entertainment CEO on Possible Fallout Game: “I Would Love to Make Another”

The Fallout games have had their highs and lows, and Obsidian Entertainment’s Fallout: New Vegas is one that fans of the franchise fairly enjoy. Unfortunately for the hopefuls out there, Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart confirmed that the studio is not working on a Fallout sequel, though he did express an interest in making one before his retirement.

The clarification was made in an interview with the game studio founder, who also talked about the highs and lows of his professional career. Toward the end of the interview, Urquhart was asked to comment on a “hypothetical new Fallout from Obsidian.” His response was as follows:

We’re not working on it right now, our plate is pretty full with AvowedGrounded and Outer Worlds 2. I don’t know when we’re going to start talking about new games, maybe towards the end of next year [conversation took place before Christmas 2022 – ed. note]. We just have to see what’s going on. That’s the best way to say it. There’s nothing in the plans, nothing on the piece of paper that says that.

Urquhart did end on a high note in the interview, however, citing that he is interested in working on another Fallout title before his retirement.

I would love to make another Fallout before I retire. I don’t know when that is, I don’t have a date of my retirement. It’s funny – you can say I’m already 52, or only 52. It’s one of those two, depending on the day. My hope is that’ll happen, but we’ll have to wait and see.

As Obsidian is currently busy with multiple titles, Urquhart reveals that the studio just doesn’t have the capability to work on a sequel at the moment. To put things into perspective, Fallout New Vegas was released way back in 2010, and the franchise’s most recent mainline game, Fallout 76, is already four years old.

Though we won’t be seeing a Fallout title from Obsidian anytime soon, it’s at least good to know that its CEO still thinks positively of the franchise.

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising Announced; Will Feature Rollback Netcode and Crossplay

A new Granblue Fantasy game has just been announced, and it’s the sequel to the fighting game Granblue Fantasy: Versus. Titled “Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising,” it’s set to introduce new characters, a new story, and rollback netcode.

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is set to launch this 2023 on PS4, PS5, and PC. You can check out the reveal trailer below.

The trailer mentions that the game will support crossplay between all three platforms, though we’re not sure if this will be implemented on launch. Guilty Gear Strive, another popular fighting game, is still set to run a beta test for its own crossplay functionality on February 3. It’s worth mentioning here that both GGST and Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising are both being developed by Arc System Works.

One interesting feature that’s coming to Rising is the fleshed-out lobby system. It allows players to interact with one another and unwind between games. There’s even an all-new game mode that you can try out called “Grand Bruise Legends,” a battle royale mode with “plenty of action-packed mini games.” Here’s a glimpse of what that looks like:

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising will be a separate game, with the original Versus title receiving its final update on January 24. This may come as a disappointment to some players, as the game was released less than three years ago on February 6, 2020.

Once get more information on Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising, we’ll let you know.

Dead Cells Return to Castlevania Teaser Trailer Now Out, Features Bits of Gameplay Footage

A new Dead Cells Return to Castlevania teaser trailer has just been released! This trailer shows off a bit of gameplay footage from the Dead Cells crossover expansion, with The Beheaded traversing across the dark lord’s manor.

The expansion was first announced during The Game Awards last year. As it’s a teaser trailer, there’s not much to work with, but we do get to see what some of the new areas look like.

Deadly werewolves, haunted armors and food stuffed into the walls – oh my. The unprecedented collaborative crossover adventure Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania from Motion Twin and Evil Empire will be available for fans dreadfully soon across PC and consoles, but for now fans can sink their teeth into a fresh teaser trailer channeling the classic Castlevania games today for the anticipated DLC.

The expansion is set to include two new biomes and 14 new weapons, adding more tools to play with and more variety with every run. Weapons will include iconic names from Castlevania, including Vampire Killer, Throwing Axe, and Holy Water. Return to Castlevania is set to be Dead Cells’ biggest expansion yet, so if you enjoyed the game’s previous DLCs, then you’re likely in for a treat.

Dead Cells is currently available on many platforms, including PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and of course, PC.
