Young Souls Review – Twin-Powered Teenage Angst (PC)

Perhaps you would be surprised to learn that Young Souls actually released back in August 2021. The reason you probably haven’t heard of it is because this 2.5D brawler by relatively unknown developer 1P2P was a Stadia exclusive, one of the few and also one of the strongest indies last year. With a picturesque art style and irreverent spunk, Young Souls combines intricate combat, flexible difficulty, co-operative play, and brisk RPG elements with a quaint but familiar story about two adopted teenagers who want to roll their eyes at adult society while saving their dad from goblinkind.

Alone Together

Fraternal twins Jenn and Tristan feel spectacularly out of place in the idyllic, seaside town of Portsbourgh. Adopted more than several months ago by the wizened Professor, whom they struggle to call “dad” despite desperately wanting to, the twins are forced to navigate a neighborhood which broadly views them as “ginger freaks” who skip school, curse, attempt to purchase alcohol while underage, and generally cause trouble wherever they go. (It might be because that’s actually what they do.) It’s not until they return home after a mundane errand downtown that they discover that the Professor has been kidnapped and taken prisoner in the subterranean world of gobbons (they’re just “goblins”). If you were to ask them why they would risk their lives killing gobbons for a town they barely know, for a “dad” they also barely know, they would say that it boils down to two words: “F*** them!”

Young Souls Review

Befitting a brawler where you hack and slash waves of goblins without too much remorse, Young Souls doesn’t spend an exhausting amount of time delving deeply into their fears of rejection and loss. The protagonists are self-aware enough to understand that they’re committing mass murder on a different-skinned people. It’s justified, though, as they plan to invade and slaughter “toplanders” for taking their land away all so many years ago. When provoked, Jenn and Tristan provide short and sweet comebacks that are appropriately rebellious and flippant. While the cast of villains and NPCs are rather one-dimensional and lack any side quests that would have made them more endearing, the believable and energetic writing for the twins carries the bulk of the story’s spirit through to the end.

A Beat-’Em-Mash-Up

All beautifully drawn in an artstyle that looks like what Kurzgesagt might make if it developed a game inspired by Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara, the combat in Young Souls takes cues from multiple sources and blends them together with an uncanny touch. On its recommended difficulty setting, this brawler doesn’t pull any punches. You can button-mash your way through battles if you wish, drinking health potions like they’re on sale, but you will frequently get caught whiffing and be smashed across the screen. Knowing when to block, roll, or use a charged attack – all while noting your spacing and being careful not to get flanked on both sides – is key to survival, as the enemies have no trouble performing all of those same moves against you in return.

Young Souls Review

That said, Young Souls smartly includes a host of difficulty options (pictured above) for your chosen playstyle and comfort level. Those looking for hardened battles can make enemies even harder and feel incentivized to incorporate advanced techniques akin to fighting titles like rolling dash attacks, diving maneuvers, okizemes, ukemis, and parrying. Those searching instead for a breezy afternoon can turn the dial down several notches, going as far as increasing your character’s attack speed, adding invincibility frames when performing a special, and turning on auto-blocking.

Across the 10- to 12-hour adventure, the rest of the gameplay is equally as accessible and understandable without overstaying its welcome. In single-player, you can swap out the twins at any time like in Marvel vs. Capcom, complete with recoverable health; in local co-op (or Remote Play via Steam), both characters can thin out the goblin horde and protect each other’s backs. The overworld map has a simple fast travel system, and dungeons have portals that serve as checkpoint gates for quick navigation. Experience points are banked through sleeping, and on occasion, leveling up grants a token that can be used to play mini-games at the Happy Fit gym to increase stats (notably, strength). As for weapons and armor, so long as you smash every urn and crate in the gobbon underworld, you’ll have more than enough money and materials to upgrade them.

Young and Inexperienced

While mostly polished, Young Souls does have a handful of issues that dampen the experience. Charged attacks using a giant weapon with the “unwavering” trait, which make attacks uninterruptible, can turn boss fights into simple slugging matches so long as you have enough potions in your backpocket. Parries are somewhat inconsistent as well, to the point that it’s easier to forego shields altogether and wield a two-handed weapon instead. Also, many of the level layouts tend to use the same tilesets, so even with some traps or aesthetic differences thrown in, the environment can get tiresome and predictable. The generically flat, uninspired music for combat doesn’t help either.

Young Souls Review

The shops for weapons and armor update their wares consistently, but since the best gear is ultimately found or earned, their options aren’t attractive. This can lead to having too much currency that is left unspent apart from purchasing more potions. The user interface has a few oddities as well, slowing down to a crawl when the equipment menu is activated and making it difficult to switch easily between headwear for combat and hats for casualwear.

Verdict

Young Souls, despite several blemishes, shines as one of the strongest beat-’em-up titles in recent memory, joining the likes of Streets of Rage 4 and Castle Crashers. With accessible options for difficulty, a simple but straightforward story, local co-operative play, and challenging combat that fuses concepts from multiple genres, it provides a roadmap for how the genre can and should continue to evolve for modern audiences. With any luck, we’ll see Jenn and Tristan another time in a sequel, with double the swear words included.

Score: 8.5/10

Pros:

  • Jenn and Tristan are full of personality
  • Challenging combat, at your discretion
  • Well-executed mix of multiple genres in a beat-’em-up
  • Great fast travel and portal system
  • Wonderful artstyle
  • Local co-operative play

Cons:

  • One-dimensional villains and NPCs
  • Lack of side quests
  • Lackluster music
  • Repetitive dungeon tilesets

A review code for Young Souls was provided by the publisher and played on Steam on PC. You can read MP1st’s review and scoring policy right here.

Stranger of Paradise Visuals Are Really Rough on Last-Gen

Look, it was clear from the first showing that Stranger of Paradise wasn’t going to impress anyone when it came to the graphics department. In fact, many have compared its visuals to titles of the late PS2 era and early PS3, which is definitely not the kind of visuals you would expect to see on newer hardware such as the PS4 and PS5. Be that as it may, the visuals are something that could be forgiven, just as long as the game itself is fun, which I’ve been finding it to be. However, after spending some time with the title on the PS5, I wanted to see just how big of a difference it was from it’s last-gen counterpart. Well, as it turns out, it’s a pretty drastic one, so much so that I would agree — without overexaggerating — that this looks like a PS2 game.

First and foremost, I want to say that I was never expecting Stranger of Paradise to be some visual powerhouse. The first reveal set the tone for me, and having played the previous trial on PS5 I already had an idea of what to expect. Yes, I will agree that maybe it does like some sort of HD remastering of an old title. It’s not a visually stunning game by any degree, but visuals have never stopped me from having fun. With that said, since this is essentially part of the final release, I decided to check out the demo on the PS4 after a friend of mine was complaining how “bad” the visuals were; more specifically, how the game handles it’s anti-aliasing on last-gen. Here is how Stranger of Paradise looks on the PS4.

Note: It is recommended you view these screenshots from a monitor rather than a mobile device as it is harder to see differences on a small hand sized screen.

To compare, here’s a 1:1 shot from the PS5 version.

Yeah, that’s what you call a generational leap if you ask me.

A side by side showing that’s better.

And another side by side (shot a little different, but you can see the foliage)

These graphical differences, honestly, should be expected when it comes to cross-gen titles. The PS5 version should be pushing higher textures, and generally improved image quality. However, looking at the PS4 version, one really does have to ask, what happened here? More specifically, what in the world is going on with the character models themselves?

It doesn’t look good on the PS4, almost as if someone smeared Vaseline all over it. This is actually something that even the game’s subreddit has taken notice, as multiple threads have pointed out that the game’s overall resolution looks to be running low, not just on last-gen, but on current-gen as well.

[deleted by user]
by inStrangerofParadiseFFO

Anyone else getting a massive headache from the resolution??
byu/CzarTyr inStrangerofParadiseFFO

Some of these opening cutscenes are ridiculously low res and ugly. I’m hoping these were just compressed for the sake of the demo size.
byu/kiryubluntz inStrangerofParadiseFFO

That shimmering effect is noticeable on both gens, though last-gen does have it worse given the overall visual quality. Hopefully this is something that can be addressed in a future patch, though with being this close to release, we don’t expect to see one immediately.

Stranger of Paradise will be available on March 15 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC.

Overwatch 2 Beta on PC Set for April, Here’s What Will Be Featured

Blizzard Entertainment is ready to let players test Overwatch 2 out! While the game’s first closed alpha testing starts today, it will be exclusive to Blizzard employees, Overwatch League pros, and a few other select groups, and will be in select regions only. However, the Overwatch 2 beta will launch for PC gamers this April, and that one, anyone can play (provided they manage to sign up and get in).

The beta will be about PvP, with the developer decoupling the PvP and PvE experiences. No firm release date is available for the Overwatch 2 beta set in April, but we do know what gamers can expect from it!

This first PvP Beta will include the most significant release we’ve had since our launch. Here are the major items you can expect to see from the first beta:
  • New Damage Hero: Sojourn
  • New Game Mode: Push
  • 5v5 Multiplayer
  • Hero Reworks
  • 4 New Maps

Players who want to be part of the beta group can sign up here, though Blizzard has already said access will be granted in phases, so no guarantees that people who sign up will automatically be part of the beta.

Players can watch the latest development update by Blizzard’s Aaron Keller below.

Over on Twitter, the official Overwatch account relayed the following info regarding the Overwatch PvP beta in April:

Once we get more news about Overwatch 2’s beta and beyond, we’ll be sure to let players know.

Ghost of Tsushima Update 2.17 Patch Notes; Adds New Custom Mode & More This March 10

Sucker Punch Productions has released the Ghost of Tsushima update 2.17 (PS5 version 2.017) that introduces a new Custom Mode option to Platinum Survival in the Legends multiplayer mode, as well as a bunch of crafting system updates and more. Read up on the Ghost of Tsushima March 10 patch notes.

Ghost of Tsushima Update 2.17 Patch Notes | Ghost of Tsushima Update 2.017 Patch Notes | Ghost of Tsushima March 1- Patch Notes:

We hope everyone is enjoying Ghost of Tsushima: Legends as a bonus game in this month’s PlayStation Plus lineup! In the coming days, we’ll release Patch 2.17 (2.017.000 on PS5) for Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut and the Legends standalone. This patch focuses on Legends bug fixes and improvements and introduces a few new changes.

Patch 2.17 contains the following updates:

Added a new Custom Mode option to Platinum Survival. This allows players to enable up to four preset Difficulty Modifiers as well as up to three Nightmare hazards to be present in the match.

  • This allows you to create your own custom Nightmare-style experience. Do you only want hwachas? You can do that!
  • Similar to Photo Mode, matchmaking is disabled for Custom Mode, but it can be selected as a new Fill Party goal.
  • In response to some players asking for an even higher level of challenge, it’s also possible to enable all of the above in a single match. Only the strongest Legends will be able to defeat every wave with all Difficulty Modifiers and hazards enabled, and all bonus objectives completed.

Crafting System Updates

  • When re-rolling a gear property, Keep Existing Property has been replaced with Increase Existing Property. This provides a path for getting maximum stat values on gear without relying on RNG.
  • Revised property rerolls. Rerolled stats will never decrease in effectiveness.
  • Added the ability to reroll locked perks and stats on 120 Ki gear for the additional cost of one Purified Gear Item per reroll.

Other updates

  • Added accessibility option Dark Flash Bomb Effect. This changes the color of flash bomb screen effects to black. (This option applies to both Legends and the single-player campaign)
  • Changed hwacha behavior so it won’t immediately target players upon spawning
  • Assassins are now less likely to be targeted by enemies in the middle of a Chain Vanish streak
  • Added a new Fill Party goal: Purify Cursed Objects
  • Fixed a bug causing some Feats to incorrectly unlock when completing a mission on Platinum instead of Nightmare
  • Replaced wave 12 world mod in Blood & Steel with Toxic Clouds •Fixed a rare issue where world modifiers would fail to network

Madden 22 Update 1.013 Patch Notes; Runs Out for New Additions This March 10

EA has released the Madden 22 update 1.013 patch on next-gen, and it brings in a few new additions to the football sim in the form of new scenarios in Franchise mode, coach adjustments in practice mode, and a bunch of other gameplay-related improvements. Read on for the full Madden 22 update patch notes.

Madden 22 Update 1.013 Patch Notes | Madden 22 PS5 and Xbox Series X Patch Notes:

Madden NFL 22 (Xbox Series X|S & PS5)

Key Highlights:

  • New Scenarios for Franchise
  • Coach Adjustments added to Practice mode
  • NFL Live Playbooks update

Gameplay Updates:

  • Coach Adjustments and Coverage Depths have returned to Practice mode! You will now be able to use Coach Adjustments and Zone Coverage Adjustments in Practice Mode via RS/R3 click from the Play-Call Menu.
    • DEV NOTE: When the play-call menu was re-designed in Madden 21 for the launch of Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, some of the functionality from the previous console generation was left behind. As you have told us, you’ve found these options very useful in practice, so the controls to use Coaching Adjustments in Practice have been brought over. Players can click the RS/R3 at any level in play-call to enter the Coach Adjustment menu. Once you back out of the menu, you will be returned to their previous spot in the play-call menu.
  • Fixed an issue with the Gun Wing Slot Wk: RPO Power Alert Glance play allowing the QB to break-out of the handoff and scramble instead of handing off or passing.
  • Fixed an issue allowing a ‘Playmaker Flip’ on the RPO Stretch play out of the Singleback Bunch TE formation.
  • Removed the temporary modifier previously used on RPO Zone Peek plays that was allowing defenders to shed their blocks quicker. Block-sheds on this play are now back to using solely the ratings match-up, as the exploits leading to this modifier have been resolved.
  • Fixed an issue with the handoff animation on the Gun Split Slot Open: Triple Option LT play, so that it will function the same as other Triple Option handoffs.

Franchise Updates:

  • Fixed an issue with the fifth-year option scenario that was causing it not to trigger in the offseason
  • Fixed an issue with a ‘Crisis in Confidence’ scenario goal that would cause it not award Staff Points upon completion
  • Added new Franchise Scenarios:
    • DEV NOTE: This update will apply to both new and existing Franchise files, so no need to restart your Franchise.
    • Trench Boost: The new Trench Boost scenario gives you a chance to help improve your entire offensive line by building off either a strong rushing or passing performance. The tier-based rewards will compensate you based on your success in the following game and give you the opportunity to immediately beef up your offensive front to either clear lanes for your running backs or keep your franchise quarterback’s jersey clean.
    • QB Duel: The QB Duel scenario starts during the regular season when two of the league’s best signal-callers face off. As a coach, you’ll be faced with the choice of calling on your own elite quarterback to have a huge game that leads you to victory or challenging your defense to step up to the plate and shut down one of the league’s best signal-callers.
    • Immovable Object: A mid-to-late season scenario where your match-up includes facing one of the league’s staunchest defenses also known as the ominous “Immovable Object.” Do you attack them and try to run right through the wall? Do you take to the skies and try to throw it over the wall? Or do you enter the arena with the attitude to win by any means necessary?
    • Under Siege: After dealing with a barrage of sacks in the middle of the season, you’ll be forced as a coach to place blame on either your offensive line for not holding up or your quarterback for not getting the ball out quick enough. Following that decision, you’ll be tasked with how to approach the following game which can include staying the course, shifting to the run, or extra preparation heading into the game. Depending on your choice and success in the next game, your offense and offensive line can receive the boost they need to bounce back and right the ship.
    • QB Breakouts: We’ve updated the QB breakouts with modular cinematics and similar to our other breakout scenarios, in the week following a standout performance by your quarterback, he’ll be given a set of goals that he must accomplish to increase his DEV trait. These goals will scale by DEV trait meaning upgrading a player from Normal to Star will be easier than upgrading from Star to Superstar or Superstar to X-Factor. Already have an X-Factor QB and feel left out? Don’t worry as you’ll also have the potential to put up a huge day but rather than receiving a DEV trait upgrade, you’ll be vying for the chance at a huge chunk of XP.

NFL Live Playbooks:

  • 49ers
    • Updated Singleback Deuce Close and Gun Split Close Pro to Deebo Package.
  • Bears
    • Added I-Form Z Close, I-Form Slot, Strong Close, and Gun Split Close Pro
  • Bengals
    • Added Singleback Wing Pair, Singleback Wing TIght Z, Singleback Y Deep Trips, Gun Split slot, Gun Spread Y-Flex
  • Bills
    • Added Deuce Close, Doubles Off Close, and Weak Pro,
  • Cowboys
    • Added Full House Normal Wide
  • Giants
    • Added Singleback Doubles Off Close, Singleback Y-Trips, I-Form Pro, I-Form Z Close, I-Form Slot, I-Form Tight, Strong Z Close, Weak Pro, Gun Split Slot, Gun Normal Y Off, Gun Normal Y Off Wk, Gun Y Off X CLose, and Gun Trips TE
  • Lions
    • Added Singleback Wing TIght U, Strong Z Close, Gun Bunch TE, and Gun Trey Open

  • Rams

Battlefield 2042 Weekly Reset Challenge #12 & Reward (Mar 10 – Mar 17)

Morning Battlefield 2042 players, it’s that time of week again! Yup, there’s a new set of challenges and weekly rewards now live in Battlefield 2042. Here’s all the requirements to unlock the Battlefield 2042 Weekly Reset Challenge #12 (Mar 10 – Mar 17) rewards.

Battlefield 2042 Weekly Reset Challenge #12 (Mar 10 – Mar 17):

How to Complete and Earn Battlefield 2042 Weekly Reset Challenge #12 (Mar 10 – Mar 17) Reward:

  • 1200 damage inflicted with any explosive.
  • 30 enemies killed with assault rifles.
  • 40 teammates revived.

This week’s weekly challenge might be a bit more time consuming than paste. While kills with an assault rifle should be easy enough, reviving teammates will require players to be paying more attention. Our best tip, stick with the squad or where there is a condensed number of players, and only revive when it is safe to. No sense in resurrecting someone only to die immediately by the crossfire.

As for the damage with any explosives, stick to what you are use to using. Grenades are a good choice, though we also believe that splash damage from tanks and other vehicles might count as explosive damage.

Congrats, you should now have earned 15,000XP along with the Battlefield 2042 weekly mission #12 reward, the Snow Blaster rare weapon skin for the SFAR-M GL rifle.

Every week on Thursday at 4:00am PT/6:00am CT/7:00am ET the Battlefield 2042 weekly challenges refresh, revealing a new weekly reward. If you are interested in staying up-to-date on when these rewards and weekly challenges drop, be sure to follow MP1st on Twitter, or keep a watchful eye on our guide page for Battlefield 2042.
