Battlefield 2042 AI Soldier Bots – Good or Bad for the Game?

With EA yesterday confirming that the Battlefield 2042 AI soldiers (bots) can’t be turned off, and can populate up to 64-players per match, we here at MP1st decided to talk about the topic given some gamers might have concerns about it. With that in mind, we reached out to Battlefield content creators and long-time franchise fans to weigh in on the topic at hand, and whether Battlefield 2042 AI soldier bots are good or bad for the franchise.

Note that we are all sharing our thoughts on the matter based on what we know, and without trying out the game. Our feelings could very well change once we’ve had some hands-on time with the beta set for later this year.

DANNYonPC (YouTube, Twitter)

I wish the AI was optional, but i do like that its a thing

Flakfire (YouTube, Twitter)

I think AI in Battlefield has a lot of positive applications. At its most basic, filling servers provides a more engaging and consistent experience for players. It can be very frustrating when a server empties out and the pace of combat crawls to a halt. Often, this leads to the abandonment of the server, which means you’re stuck exiting and wasting more time loading into a different game. Currently, we see this a lot on Battlefield V where the servers empty after a bad map in the rotation.  It would be nice to have AI bolster the action to keep the pace up.

I know there are concerns over how AI will behave in-game, and there’s a question of if those kinds of kills are going to feel rewarding. I think the answer to this depends on how AI players are presented in-game and how effectively they work. Many games utilize AI players and some have employed them quite successfully. Titanfall’s Grunts are a great example. It’s true that they’re largely cannon fodder for skilled players, but again, they keep the pacing of combat up, and that makes for an enjoyable experience. In the heat of the moment, are you really going to stop and check to see who was an AI player and who wasn’t? No.

We also need to remember significant strides have been made with AI since then. DICE has been experimenting with AI players since at least Battlefield 1, which came out several years ago. I would expect the technology has improved significantly. Similarly, I’m sure an AI soldier programmed to support teammates is probably going to be more adept at handing out ammo and health than your average Battlefield player. AI could also have map testing applications.

One of the biggest ways in which I see AI being beneficial is for players in smaller geographic regions. We saw issues with Battlefield 1 and Battlefield V for players in the Middle East and the Pacific. Many struggled to find games. Bots can help populate servers in these regions and that’s good for those players.

There are always going to be detractors when it comes to AI or the use of bots in games, arguing it cheapens the experience or lowers the level of realism. Well, it’s Battlefield — the game where we ride jeeps laden with C4 into tanks or jump out of an airplane to bazooka an enemy. I think we’ll be okay.

Lossy (YouTube, Twitter)

Personally, I feel as though it’ll bring more good than harm. For lower populated regions like Oceania, having AI bots in servers will keep servers far more active than they have been.

The general reception I’ve seen online too has been very positive. There are definitely concerns over how the AI bots will be balanced in game. But generally, players seem excited.

AI bots will surely go a long way to keep Battlefield 2042 active for years to come. It’s always frustrating going back to older titles in the series, wanting to play a certain map or mode and being disappointed when you find there aren’t any servers running that configuration anymore.

I’m interested in how DICE will implement them exactly. I don’t want to be in the middle of a gunfight with an AI bot and have it suddenly vanish. I’d also like to know what limits they can go to – can they use vehicles for example? Can they revive downed teammates or supply ammo?

Only time will tell.

Oddjob001 (Battlefield subreddits mod, Twitter)

Regarding the announcement of AI bots in Battlefield2042, I am both excited and reserved. My excitement comes from being a server administrator, event and scrim coordinator in each Battlefield since BF1942. My reservation comes from lack of tooling for the above roles, over the last few releases of Battlefield.

DICE has been working on AI Bots, and training them, since Battlefield 1. With recent advancements in AI, I am confident they will have a well working bot system, unlike games featuring AI bots of the past. My excitement in this is IF DICE gives us a viable RSP system, it will help alleviate the issues that communities have seeding and starting their servers every day. In addition, it could provide an interesting layer to community events. However, my concern is that we will have no control over the bots.

If done correctly, with tools and control that the community can access, I think its a great addition to Battlefield. If they are forced upon us, I do not believe communities or players will enjoy the feature.

James Lara (MP1st Senior Editor)

Honestly, I’m divided on this because on one side, if this Battlefield 2042 flops at least there would be some way to account for the lack of players, or more so down the road when the game is long past its life people can still play it. On the other hand, imagine being in a firefight and you go down but a medic who’s a bot wins it and just ignores reviving you.

I suppose that’s not much different than what a lot of real players already do, but still, I worry that these bots won’t be much smarter than in most other games. Some may view that as a good thing — easy pickings, especially for new players. Heck, I enjoy racking up kills, because I think that’s part of the fun and playing in a match to feel like you are making a difference, even if it’s artificial, still has a good feeling to it.

Then there’s the obviousl skill gapping. If you are facing up against a team with more human than bots, just how much of a difference is that going to play for a match? Does the team with more bots essentially mean that they will lose? I suppose it’ll try to divide everyone up equally, or least one would hope.

Then of course you can’t make these bots too smart otherwise it comes off cheating. Like If I am sneaking about, taking the road less, are bots going to go out their way just to track me? If I am camped out in a corner of a room of a building that rarely anyone enters, will I suddenly be hunted by bot that just happened to be walking on the outside of this building?

I do like the idea of bots, but that is such a tough aspect to balance out, and for a game as big as Battlefield where playing the objective is important, it does worry me.

But then this does assume that Battlefield 2042 is somehow a major flop with low player count. I don’t see that happening, heck Battlefield 3 is still doing okay a decade later. Yeah some games don’t get filled, but considering how many other Battlefield game shave released, it’s player count ain’t bad at all.

Alex Co (MP1st Editor-in-Chief)

Personally, I’m leaning on how this could affect the franchise in a positive way. Not only would this mean that matches would start faster (filling a 128-player match is no easy task I think), but it means that regions outside the US won’t be “forced” to connect to other servers just so they can play a match, which means less lag (I am looking at you, Middle-Eastern gamers, this should help the gamers there loads). Those are all positive things that the AI bots can add to the game/franchise.

In addition to that, it’s impossible to play a game of Battlefield and not come across a sub-par teammate that either doesn’t know how to give out meds and ammo, or intentionally doesn’t want to. Hopefully, bots will alleviate that and be smart enough that they’ll do the “right” thing in most situations. Still, I am cautious about it, particularly on just how good these bots will be. Will they be too smart in the sense that they can pick people off from far away? Or will they be super dumb that they’ll be cannon fodder? We honestly can’t answer that until we’ve had some time with the game ourselves.

At its core though, I can see where DICE is going with this and why they want to do this. It’s a bold move, and one I can see paying off. I am definitely going to trust the studio’s judgement on this, and willing to give it a shot before calling it a failed experirment.

That’s about it. Do you agree with the sentiments shared above? Let us know your thoughts down in the comments below!

Scarlet Nexus Launch Trailer Showcases the OSF Battle Against the Others

Get ready to embark in a new kind of action role-playing game experience, as Bandai Namco Entertainment unleashes the Scarlet Nexus launch trailer — which showcases the OSF battle against the Others!

You can check out the launch trailer below from Bandai Namco themselves.

If you’re wondering what the plot of the game is all about, here’s the overview from the official game page.

In the far distant future, a psionic hormone was discovered in the human brain, granting people extra-sensory powers and changed the world as we knew it. As humanity entered this new era, deranged mutants known as Others began to descend from the sky with a hunger for human brains. Highly resistant to conventional attack methods, extreme measures needed to be taken to battle the overwhelming threat and preserve humanity. Those with acute extra-sensory abilities, known as psionics, were our only chance to fight the onslaught from above. Since then, psionics have been scouted for their talents and recruited to the Other Suppression Force (OSF), humanity’s last line of defense.

Featuring a dual story, begin your adventure with either Yuito Sumeragi, an energetic recruit from a prestigious political family or Kasane Randall, the mysterious scout whose power and skill has gained great notoriety among the OSF. As their different experiences interweave with each other, it is only then that you will reveal the full story and unlock all the mysteries of a Brain Punk future caught between technology and psychic abilities in SCARLET NEXUS.

If you want to know our thoughts on Scarlet Nexus, check out our review of the game right here.

Scarlet Nexus is now available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Dying Light 2 Devs Talk Why the Cure in the First Game Didn’t Work, Next Devstream Set for July 1

It appears that the world of Dying Light isn’t a walk in the park especially when it comes to repercussions and decisions, as Dying Light 2 developers talk why the cure in the first game didn’t work, as well as how player choices affect multiplayer.

In an exclusive report by Game Informer on the much anticipated sequel, Dying Light 2 animation director Dawid Lubryka explained why the original Dying Light’s cure didn’t turn out the way it hoped and which naturally lead to the events of the sequel.

“As fans of Dying Light will know, antizine was never actually a cure- it only slowed down the progression of the infection. In the events of Dying Light 2, everyone in The City is infected, and people learn how to live with that infection. They manage to stay alive, Stay Human, with what they have at their disposal.”

Lubryka also went into detail about how player choices affect the multiplayer in the game.

“The host makes all the decisions, and our players experience them. So you can witness how the world of the host changes as a result of their choices, and you can compare this outcome to your own world. So all choices and their consequences stay with the host—they don’t affect your solo campaign, but you get to keep all the player progress you’ve made and all the loot you’ve found.”

In addition to that, Techland has announced that the next devstream called “Dying 2 Know” will launch this July 1! So expect a load of info for the game to become available once that airs. MP1st will recap the important bits for an easier read.

If you want to watch it, you can do so by tuning in to the official Techland Twitch channel.

For more news on Dying Light 2 as well as details on the upcoming pre-order bonuses and collector’s edition, check out our archives on the game here.

Rumor: Ghost of Tsushima Follow Up is Called Ghost of Ikishima, Coming Out for PS5 Some Time in 2021

Looks like the world of Sucker Punch Productions’ hit samurai action game is about to get bigger, as a rumor suggests that Ghost of Tsushima follow up is called Ghost of Ikishima — and that the new content is coming out for PS5 some time in 2021,

The rumor was shared by a Twitter user named Shpeshal_Nick, who called the downloadable content an “expandalone “+type game.

A reply to Nick’s tweet could lend credence to why Ghost of Ikishima was used — it’s an actual island located in the Tsushima Straight where the game is based on.

“Iki Island, (Iki-no-Shima), is an archipelago in the Tsushima Strait, which is administered as the city of Iki in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan.”

While there is no official announcement from Sucker Punch Productions yet, best to take this rumor with a grain of salt as always.

Hailed as one of the best exclusive games for the PlayStation 4, here’s an overview of Ghost of Tsushima if you’re new to the series.

A storm is coming

In the late 13th century, the Mongol empire has laid waste to entire nations along their campaign to conquer the East. Tsushima Island is all that stands between mainland Japan and a massive Mongol invasion fleet led by the ruthless and cunning general, Khotun Khan.

As the island burns in the wake of the first wave of the Mongol assault, samurai warrior Jin Sakai stands as one of the last surviving members of his clan. He is resolved to do whatever it takes, at any cost, to protect his people and reclaim his home. He must set aside the traditions that have shaped him as a warrior to forge a new path, the path of the Ghost, and wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Tsushima.

Read our review on Ghost of Tsushima here. The game is available exclusively on PS4.

The Order 1886 Can Unofficially Be Played in Full-Screen Thanks to a Mod

When The Order 1886 was first initially revealed, developers Ready At Dawn came out and explained that they wanted their game to have a film-like look, thus capped the frames-per-second to 30, while also adding a letterboxing effect. Whether or not you actually loved playing the game like that was entirely up to you, but one savvy modder finally took it upon themselves to “fix” this, making The Order 1886 fully playable without the letterboxing, with additional frame-rate improvements.

Unsurprisingly, this unofficial patch comes from PlayStation scene researcher and Modder, illusion0001. For those unaware of their work, they previously created a number of unofficial FPS patches for games such as Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Concrete Genie, Silent Hills P.T. Demo, and Uncharted 4, which we tested out ourselves.

This latest patch, however focuses entirely on Ready At Dawn’s 2015 PS4 exclusive, The Order 1886.

According to their personal blog, they have created three different types of patches that allow the game to be played in different ways. The first, being a resolution hack that decreases the resolution from 1080p to 720p.

Top is 1080p, bottom is 720p.

You may be wondering why one would want to lower the resolution, but from past work that illusion0001 has done, lower resolution typically meant that the fps patch would run more stable. For Uncharted 4, this was especially true as a resolution of 540p held 60fps far more frequently than it did at full resolution.

This resolution discovery soon lead to an increase in performance, allowing uncapped frame rates. Sadly, from the video posted it does seem that the PS4 has quite a hard time at keeping a stable 60fps, with it mostly hovering around 35-45fps.

However, in all this digging, illusion0001 was successfully able to find a way to remove the letterboxing altogether, and coupling it with the 720p resolution edit this was the result.

illusion0001 notes that this did make the game run worse as it was pushing more pixels on the screen as well as noticing that the image was cropped versus what it should have been. They had no luck in solving the crop issue, but is taking pull requests from their Github page.

It’s still pretty awesome that this is now possible, although it’s important to make this clear that this will only work on jailbroken PS4. Don’t expect Sony to go back and patch The Order 1886 either, as it’s not exactly the most stable game when playing it this way.

Report: Marvel’s Avengers War for Wakanda to Feature Crossbones, Horde Mode & More Details Surface

While Marvel’s Avengers players just got the Cosmic Cube Event kick off this week, there’s a meatier free DLC coming down the line later this year, and that’s the “War for Wakanda” expansion. Aside from Black Panther being playable, a ton of Marvel’s Avengers War for Wakanda details have surfaced!

Thanks to reliable data miner and leaker Miller who has been spot-on in leaking Marvel’s Avengers details before (and has been featured here on MP1st numerous times), we now know that War for Wakanda will feature Crossbones, updates to existing outfits, and even a Horde mode, and more! The info gathered below are from sources close to the game which have shared info regarding the upcoming free DLC.

Marvel’s Avengers War for Wakanda details:

  • Updates to existing outfits are in consideration (example: MCU Hawkeye with different hair)
  • No Ultron in WFW; second villain is Crossbones
  • Black Panther heroics: kimoyo support, spear assault, panther ultimate
  • More free cosmetics returning with 2.0
  • More weapon skins incoming
  • New enemy types from both existing factions (AIM and Watchdogs) in addition to the spider bots
  • Horde mode
  • New faction (joining Inhuman Alliance and SHIELD)
  • Mining facility raid not coming day-and-date with WFW
  • Super Adaptoid OLT no longer named Resolution but reverted to simply Family Reunion; solid news re: release timing tomorrow (Yes, I’m serious.)

Miller adds that the people making the decisions on character cosmetics are gathering opinions on hair accuracy, and whether making Hawkeye bald would dissuade people from buying his Endgame suit, and advises people to let Crystal Dynamics know what they didn’t purchase a specific skin.

Same as with any datamined or leaked info, treat this with a grain of salt, and don’t get annoyed if Crystal Dynamics doesn’t announce or roll out any or all of the items mentioned above.

War for Wakanda has no definite release date yet, but it’s expected to be released sometime this year.

Rainbow Six Extraction Sledge Operator Showcase Trailer Brings the Hammer Down

Prepare for assault and using brute force to your advantage, as Rainbow Six Extraction Sledge Operator Showcase trailer brings the hammer down and introduces a new REACT operator to help players clear a path.

Here’s the showcase trailer giving an idea of what to expect with the character.

If you don’t know who the heck Sledge is, here’s a little background information from his official wiki entry.

Sledge only knocks once. The moment Sledge heard about the resurgence of the Parasite after New Mexico, he volunteered for REACT. Forged in the crucible of Selection and training for the SAS, he was welcomed for his imposing physical stature and uncanny skill with the Caber, his Tactical Breaching Hammer.

If you missed gameplay deep dive and Ela Operator Showcase trailer, you can check it out here.

ABOUT TOM CLANCY’s RAINBOW SIX EXTRACTION:

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six® Extraction is a 1 to 3-player cooperative tactical first-person shooter. Assemble your elite team of Rainbow Six operators to launch incursions into the unpredictable containment zones and discover the mysteries behind the lethal alien threat called the Archæns. Knowledge, cooperation, and a tactical approach are your best weapons. Band together and put everything on the line as you take on an unknown enemy.

CROSS-BENEFITS
The game will support cross-play and cross-save between all platform families on day one. Owners of both Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction will instantly unlock the entire roster of 18 operators in Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege and will get the United Front cosmetic bundles in both games.

FEATURES:

LEAD ELITE RAINBOW SIX OPERATORS IN CO-OP OR SOLO PLAY
Squad up and create a team of up to three Operators or go solo. Pick from 18 of the Rainbow Six Operators that are best adapted to survive incursions. Each Operator has a specific set of weapons, gadgets, and abilities to master. The uniqueness and different playstyles of each Operator allows for limitless options to customize your roster. Striking the right balance on your team will be the key to success.

Complete missions to level up your Operator, boost their stats, and gain access to new loadout options and powerful combat perks.

RISK IT ALL IN UNPREDICTABLE CONTAINMENT ZONES
Set in four regions across the US, containment zones are dominated by the parasite, creating an unstable ecosystem within their walls. Incursions into these hot zones will challenge your team every time. Use gadgets and the Operators’ abilities to overcome the situation to accomplish your objectives, and above all, extract from the containment zone. With a selection of 12 uniquely designed maps featuring procedurally generated challenges, enemies, infestation, and increasing difficulty, the dangers are unpredictable, but the rewards are richer the deeper you go.

If an Operator fails to get to an extraction point, you and your team will have a choice: Leave your Operator behind to push on for bigger rewards or head back to mount a daring rescue. Those who don’t make it will find their operator MIA, making them temporarily unavailable for future missions. The only means of recovering an MIA Operator is to extract them before the parasite takes them over completely.

FIGHT A LETHAL AND EVOLVING ALIEN THREAT
The Chimera parasite and its evolving Archæns are highly lethal sentient organisms that are consuming and reshaping the landscape. The Rainbow Exogenous Analysis & Containment Team (REACT) hopes to learn from this unique but deadly phenomenon, and you will count on teammates and your instincts to face 10 parasitic archetypes such as: the vicious Spiker, the elusive Tormentor, and the summoning Apex. Survive the Sprawl, a flow of self-aware parasitic tissue that spreads over the containment zone and alters the ecosystem. Areas that were previously infested may be clear, while previously safe zones could be ravaged by the Sprawl and other deadly enemies. Work together to leverage the destruction technology from Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege to reinforce walls against attacks or tear them down to create offensive opportunities.

Rainbow Six Extraction is set for release Sept. 16 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Cyberpunk 2077 Top Reported Issues Listed by CD Projekt Red

It looks like CDPR has bundled together the top technical problems its latest game has, as Cyberpunk 2077 top reported issues have been listed by CD Projekt Red — acknowledging the complaints players have made about their newest release.

Here’s the top reported issues listed in CD Projekt Red’s official support page for Cyberpunk 2077.

Here are our top reported issues for Cyberpunk 2077.

• Play it Safe – Takemura doesn’t call even after completing other main quests, objective’s stuck on “Pursue other leads or wait until Takemura is ready”.
• Cyberpsycho Sighting: Smoke on the Water – Quest may get stuck in the journal without an objective even though it’s complete.
• Sweet Dreams – Stefan is missing and it’s not possible to progress the quest.

Thanks everyone for bringing these to our attention!

We’ve shared them with our development team and they are being investigated.

Still facing numerous performance issues and glitches, Cyberpunk 2077’s PS4 and Xbox One releases were pretty much a train wreck for most — with the game not delivering on the promises CD Projekt Red made to their fanbase. As a result, the company is facing several lawsuits and is doing its best to make reparations for the disastrous launch by periodically releasing updates to patch the game and make it playable for players who bought the game.

Speaking of Cyberpunk 2077 on consoles, the PS4 digital release of the game has returned to the PS Store with a warning released by CD Projekt Red as well as the Xbox One version reverting to the standard digital refund policy this July 6.

Battlefield 2042 to Allow Up to 64 AI Soldiers in Conquest & Breakthrough, Cannot Be Turned Off

Remember when we reported that Battlefield 2042 would feature AI soldiers (bots) to fill 128-player servers in case there’s not enough players in that region and platform? It looks like more details about that have surfaced, and it also confirms that this feature cannot be turned off.

EA has confirmed to The Verge that up to 64 AI soldiers can be deployed on game modes Conquest and Breakthrough, and again, this is to help ensure servers are full of bodies for people to shoot at. Currently, there are no plans to turn this feature off, and understandably, real-life players (humans) will take priority, so there’s a big possiblity that players won’t even come across any bot at all — especially during peak hours.

While this might sound like a very controversial decision, it might be the right move, as filling up 128-player servers is no easy feat, especially when you consider random disconnects, leavers, griefers, AFKers, and the like. The bigger concern here is: will the AI soldiers be any good? Just be cannon fodder or act like good teammates in the sense that they’ll revive, provide ammo and do stuff that actual gamers are supposed to do? We’ll know for sure once we get some hands-on time with the game’s beta sometime this year.
