Ubisoft Has Removed the Goldeneye 007 Far Cry 5 Fan Maps Per Notice from MGM

Well, that didn’t last long. Last month, a dedicated Far Cry and Goldeneye 007 fan released a full 18-map recreation of the original Goldeneye 64 levels that were playable directly from Far Cry 5. It was a passion project of their that was free for everyone to enjoy, and while all seemed well with Ubisoft, it would appear that the studio behind the James Bond franchise didn’t take it too kindly and has issued a full takedown of all the maps.

Krollywood, the creator of the re-released maps, recently made an announcement on YouTube, that they had released their second multiplayer map on the PS4 version of Far Cry 5. While exciting, many users who wanted to play the map soon came to the realization that they were nowhere to be found. In a YouTube comment response, Krollywood notes that Ubisoft were forced to remove them due to a email from MGM, the studio that created James Bond.

Ubisoft Has Removed the Goldeneye 007 Far Cry 5 Fan Maps Per Notice from MGM

He expanded on this, and even posted the full notice which reads as:

On 6/23/2021, we received a notice from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Inc. (“Complainant”) that Complainant believes the Goldeneye fan made mod in FC5 (detail below) infringes its intellectual property rights. In particular, Complainant believes you are infringing its copyright and trademarks

Comments from Complainant: It has been brought to my attention that your company currently hosts a remake of the 18 levels of the “GOLDENEYE 007” (1997) videogame crafted by Krollywood in the Far Cry 5 Arcade Mode. Exploiting our Bond Properties whether by you directly, or by a third party user, is unequivocally not admissible nor protected. Krollywood’s GoldenEye 007 remake makes unduly use of our trademarks, US TM No. 2957173 (GOLDENEYE) and EUTM No. 2045473 (GOLDENEYE Stylized and Design). Further, the cited remake inescapably benefits from our famous 1995 motion picture of the same name, protected under U.S. Copyright registration No. PA 1-397-651.

User Krollywood is not authorized to use any JAMES BOND/007 indicia, much less provide a video game to the public using your in-game map editor as the driver. In doing so, Krollywood develops an implied association to the Bond franchise. Kindly note that only the MGM Parties are authorized to grant licenses to third parties on the JAMES BOND properties thus, this misuse of our IP generates confusion among the public as it gives the impression that Krollywood’s remake is a licensed collaboration with Ubisoft and thus constitutes an act of free riding on the prestige of our franchise. I appeal to you to immediately remove this content from your servers and relinquish any and all public access via all pertaining gaming platforms (i.e. PC, XBOX ONE, PS4 and Amazon Luna).

Luckily, Krollywood was able to back-up the levels so they aren’t completely lost forever, though of course he won’t be able to resubmit them as they currently are.

This is certainly a massive letdown, although not a surprising one as many expected this to eventually happen. Hopefully this doesn’t discourage Krollywood from working on any other projects.

ANOINTMENT ADJUSTMENTS

With the introduction of the final level cap increase, we determined this was the best time to make changes to the current Anointment meta. We have found that a few character-agnostic Anointments were proving to be the go-to for all characters and builds. With the changes we are making today, we’re hoping to see character-specific Anointments become meta, rewarding players for building into their character tree and Action Skills even more so than before. We will be monitoring community feedback very closely as we anticipate there will be a lot of discussion surrounding this topic. Game Ventures Challenges Resident Evil Village Speedrunners With a $2000 Bounty

Game Ventures, a community driven platform that sets out to challenge players and push the boundaries of what can be done in a video game has just issued one of its biggest challenges yet. Resident Evil Village speedrunners get ready to break some records.

With many titles gaining popularity in the speedrunning community, one recent release that has players trying to outdo one another is none other than Resident Evil Village. With a trophy that challenges players to beat it in under three hours, many have come up with some rather creative ways to even blow past that, clocking in with just less than two hours on some runs. Talk about insane!

To help incentives all this, Game Venture has issued a new public bounty that challenges these speedrunners to beat the game in less than an 1 hour and 40 minutes. Seems pretty quick, but those who have been keeping up with REVillage speedrunners already know that a number of runners have already shattered this record on their own personal accord.

Well, what better way to prove that it can be done again and to compete against fellow runners? Enter Game Ventures.

How Do You Enter the Resident Evil Speedrunner Game Venture Bounty?

Joining up Game Venture is as easy as signing up on any other websites. All you have to do is create a new account and then navigate your way over to the REVillage bounty and start your streaming session. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. The requirements and rules can all be found below.

Apex Legends New Event “Genesis” Announced, Upcoming Legend & Weapon Balance Revealed

Respawn Entertainment has announced an Apex Legends new event and it’s called “Genesis.” This new Collection Event will kick off next week on June 29, and will run up to July 13. In addition to that, legend and weapon changes are incoming as well!

Here’s the trailer for the upcoming Apex Legends Genesis Collection Event:

Here’s a recap of what’s coming along with a more detailed explanation below.

  • Original Kings Canyon and World’s Edge Return – Season 0 Kings Canyon and Season 3 World’s Edge are returning for a limited time in lieu of the normal Trios and Duos queues in one- hour rotations. Players can celebrate victory with these iconic maps and hot drop in Kings Canyon at Skull Town, score loot on the moving train as it barrels through Capital City in the era before the Harvester landed in World’s Edge and engage in epic multi-team throwdowns in Fuel Depot.

  • Skull Town Arrives to Arenas – Skull Town will be added to the Arenas map rotation in one hour increments during the Genesis Collection Event. Players can circle the towers as Valkyrie & Pathfinder or trap up the bottom floors as Caustic & Wattson as this location offers a wide variety of tactics and plenty of mayhem.

  • Rewards Track – Genesis Collection Event brings a rewards track with all-new earnable cosmetics, including legendary Charge Rifle and EVA-8 weapon skins. Additionally, players can earn 1,600 points per day with challenges refreshing daily throughout the event. There are also stretch challenges that reward four unique badges if completed during the event. Genesis also introduces a brand new set of 24 themed, limited-time cosmetics that are available through direct purchase (for Apex Coins or Crafting Metals) and in Genesis Event Apex Packs for the entire duration of the event. If you collect all 24 event items, you’ll unlock the Revenant Heirloom set.

  • Legend Balance Updates – Octane, Revenant, Lifeline, Bloodhound and Wattson are all getting updates that will ensure a bloodsoaked good time for all.

  • Weapons Balance Updates – The Spitfire, the 30-30 Repeater and the Longbow are all receiving balancing updates to even the playing field.

LEGEND BALANCE UPDATES

Octane

  • Launch Pad cooldown increased from 60 seconds to 90 seconds.

Dev Note: Octane remains the most popular legend by a large margin even after the stim nerf. Turns out jump pads are fun, but with the added utility from the two launch options, it’s only fair to bump up the cooldown.

Revenant

  • Slightly slimmed down hitbox (specifically his midsection, arms, and upper legs).
  • Stalker climb height significantly increased. It’s not literally unlimited now, but… that boy can really climb.
  • Silence duration decreased from 20 seconds to 15 seconds.
  • Reduced the duration of death protection by 5 seconds while using the Death Totem.

Dev Note: Revenant’s large frame places him at a significant disadvantage in gunfights, particularly against smaller legends who no longer have Low Profile. We’re shrinking some of his hitboxes to counteract this disadvantage, while also improving his ability to climb up walls and attack from unexpected angles. (We know this can be frustrating given how silent he is, so we’ll continue to monitor and add sound if necessary.) That said, we’re taking this opportunity to reduce some of the frustration that comes when playing against his tactical and ultimate.

Lifeline

  • Increased hit box size, mostly in the legs and waist.

Dev Note: Unlike Revenant, Lifeline excels in gunfights given her small hitbox. Even with the res shield gone, it’s no surprise the smallest character in the game saw an uptick in performance with the removal of Low Profile. She remains small, but these hitbox changes bring her closer to the medium sized legends.

Bloodhound

  • Eye of the Allfather scan revealed time decreased from 4 seconds to 3 seconds.
  • Beast of the Hunt duration decreased from 35 seconds to 30 seconds. Time can still be added by downing enemies.

Dev Note: Bloodhound has remained a popular and powerful pick for multiple seasons now, mostly because of the sheer amount of information that can be gained with one tap of their tactical. Shortening the scan duration still provides a snapshot of information for Bloodhound’s team without stifling all enemies caught anywhere in the large range for a full 4 seconds.

Wattson

  • Major Buff: Wattson can now place more than one Nessie on the map at a time with her Epic emote.

Dev Note: There can now be up to 20 Nessies active at once on any given map. Until that cap is reached, any Wattson can place as many as she likes. When the cap is hit, the oldest Nessie belonging to the Wattson who currently owns the most Nessies is removed.

WEAPONS BALANCE UPDATES

P2020

  • Increased Fire Rate from 6.25 -> 7.0
  • Increased Base Ammo from 12 -> 14
  • Increased Lvl 1 Mag from 14 -> 16
  • Increased Lvl 2 Mag from 16 -> 18
  • Increased Lvl 3 and Lvl 4 Mag from 18 -> 21

Spitfire

  • Increased Hip Fire spread

Dev Note: The Spitfire has continued to over perform so we’re hitting it’s close range hip fire accuracy which should help bring it in line.

30-30 Repeater

  • Slightly increased projectile speed
  • Reduced charge time from 0.5s -> 0.35s

Longbow

  • Damage increased from 55 -> 60

ARENAS UPDATES

Roccat Syn Pro Air Review – Audio Beast

Unveiled back in May, the Roccat Syn Pro Air has finally been released to the PC gaming community. A major milestone for Roccat, as this release serves to be their flagship headset, promising to deliver sounds like no other headset before it. With Turtle Beach now owning them, there is much to be excited about with the Roccat Syn Pro Air, as it takes everything you love about Roccat, and mixes it up with some of the latest and best technology offered by Turtle Beach. The results? A strikingly, beautiful headset with incredibly, rich and immersive sounds. Audiophiles prepare to be blown away.

Roccat’s Best Design Yet

I have to say, this just might be the best headset design yet from Roccat. Immediately upon opening the box, there was a sense of premium from the headset. You know that feeling you get when you buy something really expensive, that you don’t even want to touch it, and just want it to sit there to be stared at it? Well that’s exactly how I felt grabbing the Syn Pro Air. Just look at it, and tell me it isn’t beautiful.

And having this in person, it is so much better, especially when you start seeing all the tiny design choices that Roccat went with in order to deliver on its ultimate experience.

Take the adjustable banding, probably my favorite out of any headset I have ever had. You see, a lot of headsets offer the ability to adjust the headband, and those familiar will know that is usually accompanied by a loud clicking sound. This is because, in most cases there is an internal band that gets slid into the main band. Example can be seen below.

There’s nothing wrong with this, but the Roccat Syn Pro Air really proves that this classic mechanic can be improved on, and it does so by offering a silky smooth, noiseless motion. It’s achieved by engraving a groove into the band itself, with the earcup joints being able to slide freely between it.

It feels fantastic, and I’m amazed by the lack of clicking. Furthermore, I think this design is going to provide less wear and tear since it’s mostly concealed, an issue I notice on my other headsets as there are markings and plastic shavings building up. The only downside to this is if you have a very large head, as you may find it doesn’t offer enough range to be comfortable. In my case, it was perfect.

The microphone itself is fully detachable, though this is probably the only design issue I had. Being detachable is fine, and in fact a great option, especially to those who just don’t use it, but it’s the rough movement offered when attached that I’m not a big fan of. Moving the microphone from off to on and vice versa has a very rigid motion that locks in place. This made the whole headset move, which could be felt from the top of the band to the other earcup. It’s not that big where you’ll need to readjust the headset position, but it’s definitely noticeable.

The material used on the microphone is along the lines of the unbreakable rubber you may find in other mics. I actually like the overall mic build in that regard, because the rubber doesn’t feel flimsy where one slight push it going to move it completely. There’s strength to it, but enough flexibility to allow you to mold either close or away from you. I love that it’s not a massive boom mic either, but also not a super thin one that just feels tacked on. It fits nicely in the realm of sleekness, and matches beautifully with the overall design.

For the cushioning, the Syn Pro Air opts for athletic fabric covered earcups with memory foam built inside of it. A big worry I had here that because it’s not using leather, the earpads would be prone dust collecting like many other headsets that use similar fabric. Well, after using the headset extensively I’m glad to say that issue isn’t as noticeable on the Syn Pro Air as I expected it to be.

This may be due to how the stitching was done on all the padding, as it’s not so quite smooth, but instead etched with tiny patterns. The great thing is they don’t have much of a feeling to them, if any at all.

On a comfort scale, the Syn Pro Air is perfect. Extremely light in weight, the cushioning from the memory foam offers extreme comfort with no noticeable irritation from the fabric at all. The earpads are great at blocking outside sound, as with blocking any leakage for the microphone to pick up on.

And of course there are the features build on the headset itself. For volume, there are two dials one for sound and the other so that you can hear your own voice. Easily accessible as they are large dials, one on each ear side.

Then there’s the incredible RGB lighting. If you have read any of my past Roccat hardware reviews, you’ll know that I’ve had nothing but high praise for the company and how they handle RGB lighting in their new highly durable, lightweight bionic Shell. Yep, the Syn Pro Air features the very same design spotted in Roccat Gaming Mice.

The light comes in a rather faded look when you look at it from the sides of the earcups. It’s beautiful, and with different patterns available via software, the RBG lighting of the Syn Pro Air is certainly one to rave about. What I love even more is that the light stretches to the backside of the headset, with it being brighter, giving it even more style.

All in all, the design of the Roccat Syn Pro Air is certainly one to smile about, as it offers everything you want in a headset. It’s light weight, yet extremely strong, all while offering the ultimate pleasure of comfortability. This is all coming off for just the design side, as the best part of the headset is easily how it sounds.

The Ultimate Gaming Sound

If you’re looking for a headset that is going to guarantee 100% gaming immersion, then look no further. Right out of the box, the Roccat Syn Pro Air impresses with its deep, high channeling sounds that echoes in clarity through both speakers. Hearing the sound come out of these for the very first time was an absolute awe moment for me.

The sound from the Syn Pro Air is so rich in detail that it’s easy to breakdown exactly what you’re hearing. For big multiplayer fans, you’ll find these offer a nice boost in a competitive edge as every footsteps, bullets fired, and character breathing can be heard and distinguished in the field of chaos for a game like Call of Duty.

Of course multiplayer games aren’t the only games to benefit as you’ll also find total immersion in those epic single-player games. Playing through Resident Evil Village with the Syn Pro Air felt as if someone had dialed up the gut wrenching tension to a full 100. Always on my feet, hearing steps behind me, or the disturbing wet sound of something crawling through a corridor (shivers I tell you), which are the stuff of nightmares all brought to fruition with the amazing sound quality of the Syn Pro Air.

I am fully immersed in my gaming, and it just can’t get any better than that.

The microphone is also spectacular, picking up very little background noises. Playing Unfortunate Spaceman with some friends, all could hear me crystal clear, even during my screams my agony as a monster ripped me to shreds. There didn’t seem to be any audio leakage either from the well insulated padding.

Muting/unmuting is also very easy as all you have to do is raise or lower the microphone from it’s current position. This is met with a sound cues, each of them being different for the on and off. Love that, as many headsets don’t acknowledge whether you are muted or not, leading to some potentially embarrassing situations.

Goodbye Swarm, Hello Neon…Kind Of

The Roccat Pro Air Syn isn’t the only big thing releasing from Roccat as the long awaited replacement for their Swarm application is also making its debut with these headsets — and it’s a pretty app.

Meet Neon, Roccat’s newest driver software that packs a modern look. While the Swarm application was a pretty functional one and did everything users needed it to do, one of my past complaints was that it lacked in the visuals department. The Neon addresses this, as it goes for modern sleekness, with user accessibility in mind. Everything in Neon is laid out nicely in front of you, with just a click away from adjustments.

What’s more, much like all their past devices, Neon truly unlocks the hardware potential of Roccat devices. At the time of writing, the app only supports Syn Pro Air, but it will eventually span out to Roccat’s mice, keyboards, and other headsets.

For the Syn Pro Air, there are a number of configurations that users can mess around with, but more importantly this is where you can turn on 3D audio and Super Human Hearing. I was impressed with the sound prior to even using these options, and let  me tell you, the 3D audio in the Syn Pro Air is absolutely out of this world.

Just hearing the directions of where every sound came in during my Warzone match just made my immersion all the better. Watching a movie, or listening to an soundtrack just made us feel like we were actually there. The 3D audio is a fantastic feature that users will want to experience for themselves.

As for the Super Human Hearing, it’s important to understand that this isn’t to make every sound better, but to hone in on the ones that matter. In Neon, there are currently two different presets, footsteps and gunshots. We noticed with either turned on that sound would become more “muffled,” but in a way that you would hear the selected choice better. So footsteps sounded louder, more so than the rest of the other sounds such as explosives, and the whirling blades of a helicopter. It definitely felt like I was gaining a competitive edge by being able hear exactly where everything was coming from.

The EQ setting was a new one for me and wasn’t there prior to release of the hardware. Love this option, being able to fine tune all the channels to however I like.

Now, the only issue I am having with the Neon software at the moment is the illumination settings. This was an issue I had before release where my headset would be forced to shut off, which now appears fixed as with a number of other bugs I had. The only thing is we can no longer access illumination since the launch day update rolled out it as of writing this review. A bit of a bummer, but seeing that all my previous issues were addressed, the guys over at Roccat will hopefully resolve this quickly. I will be sure to update this portion of the review when that does happen.

Does It Work on Consoles?

This section bears no meaning to my overall thoughts on the Syn Pro Air, I just thought it would be a good thing to include if you are a console gamer. Now, first and foremost, Roccat advertises the Syn Pro Air as a PC headset. Because of this, I can’t really recommend you buy these for consoles. However, I will point out that if you get these for PC and want to at least try these out on a console, they do work, kind of. All the sound benefits outside of real-time software tuning remains. Testing on the PS5, the console picks up (even displays its name) the headset via the wireless dongle and is able to transmit system audio perfectly to the set.

The only thing that didn’t work was the microphone sadly, which is why I don’t recommend getting these for consoles. Again, they were built with PC in mind, especially when you factor in the Neon software. I would have loved for it to fully work on the PS5, and perhaps down the road a software update may fix that. Shame, because Roccat makes amazing headsets that console owners would definitely love. Thankfully, Turtle Beach is there to accommodate with their excellent line of headsets.

Verdict

You know every so often a company releases a product that one can say is their crowning achievement, and that’s what the Roccat Syn Pro Air is. It is the culmination of over a decade of hard work in research, that delivers. Beautifully designed with the utmost comfortability, with sounds that bestows complete gaming immersion. What more could one ask for? At just $149.99, it’s safe to say that you are getting a full premium experience that doesn’t break the bank.

Halo MCC Season 7 Update (1.2398.0.0) for June 23 Now Live (Update)

343 Industries has released the Halo MCC Season 7 update today on both PC and Xbox and shows as version 1.2398.0.0! This Halo The Master Chief Collection patch clocks in a 12GB on PC, and a hefty 32GB on Xbox One!

Halo MCC Season 7 Update (1.2398.0.0) Patch Notes:

Update: Here’s the complete patch notes via 343!

New in this update

New Season 7 customization content

New cosmetic content for Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 3, and Halo 4 is here as part of Season 7. For the first time, this includes new armor for Elites. The full breakdown:

  • New Halo: Combat Evolved vehicle skins
  • New Halo 3 Elite armors
  • New Halo 3 Energy Sword colors
  • New Halo 3 Techsuits
  • Halo 4 weapon skins
  • Halo 4 armors (the “Champions Bundle”)
  • New static and animated nameplates

Custom Game Browser live for Halo: Reach

The long-awaited Custom Game Browser is live for Halo: Reach. Players can use the Browse menu to find other people’s custom games or the Create menu to customize and host their own custom game session.

Thank you to the players who helped us test the Custom Game Browser during the scale test. Since then, we improved the experience in many ways:

  • Full game sessions now appear at the bottom of the list.
  • The Session Name field now has a longer character limit.
  • The game now informs the party leader if they try to join a game session, but a member of the party does not have necessary content installed.
  • When “Repeat Game” is enabled, the pause menu now says “Next Game” instead of “End Game”
  • Fixed several issues with sorting the list of sessions.
  • Made several improvements to how voice and text chat work with parties during gameplay.
  • Fixed exploits that allowed known cheaters into sessions.

New Halo 3 map: Edge

Originally made for Halo Online, the second new map for Halo 3, “Edge,” has been added and can appear in Social Matchmaking. Edge is a symmetrical map that supports all major game variants in Halo 3 with 4 to 12 players.

Fight with sentinel beams and silenced SMGs across an open cliff-side vista and secluded ancient database in this new map on the remote frontier world of Partition.

Waterfall and Edge maps added to Social Matchmaking

Players may now play on both new Halo 3 maps, “Waterfall” and “Edge,” when queued up in Social Matchmaking. Thank you for the player feedback that helped us make fixes and improve visual polish on both maps before moving them into matchmaking.

Firefight matchmaking is now in Social Matchmaking

To help give the Firefight community a boost, Firefight matchmaking is now part of the Social Matchmaking flow (you can read the blog post here). We expect this to help in several ways:

  • The Firefight game mode will have increased visibility by appearing alongside other social game modes.
  • The Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach Firefight communities will be closer together, improving queue times for everyone. Players can still choose to queue up for only one of the games if they prefer.
  • Players can be more specific with the game types they search for.
  • This creates the possibility of rotating Firefight options and categories.

Better visual authenticity for Halo: Combat Evolved

Many graphical updates, from fog and shader effects to original character models and active camo quality, bring Halo: Combat Evolved even closer to the classic experience. Some updates include:

  • Active Camo is closer to the original Xbox appearance, with a darker shade that is less reflective.
  • Textures on all maps now display bump maps, which is most noticeable on metal and Forerunner surfaces
  • The fog effects across multiple maps now render properly, such as above the canyon in Assault on the Control Room, Two Betrayals, 343 Guilty Spark, and Keyes.
  • Covenant shields now react to being shot with plasma weapons by changing color.
  • The visual effects of Jackal shields, teleporters, Spirit Dropships, and Cortana’s color pulsing while in the Ring’s control room now match the original Xbox version.
  • Flashlight shine distance is further and better represents the distance on original Xbox version.
  • Translucent textures such as the windows on Pillar of Autumn are no longer too opaque and now have the correct reflections.
  • Captain Keyes’ original model from the Xbox version has returned.
  • Layers of detail and reflection are now applied in the correct order on Master Chief’s armor, Forerunner doors, Pelican Dropships, and more.
  • The screen flash that displays when picking up camo or taking a teleporter is now closer to the original Xbox version.
  • Combat Flood forms and health packs now glow the way they did in original Xbox version.

Halo: Combat Evolved Hardcore playlist changes

We updated the Hardcore settings for Halo: Combat Evolved based on competitive player feedback to improve this playlist and align it with the modded competitive gameplay experience popularized by the competitive community on Xbox. This includes the following changes:

  • Weapon ready effects only play for local players.
  • Dropped weapons have disabled collision and material sounds.
  • Disabled footstep sounds.
  • Killfeed messages only display if they are related to a local player or their teammates.

Updates to the Extras menu

The Extras menu has been updated to play the terminals and cinematics from Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 4, and Halo 2: Anniversary directly within the game instead of linking externally.

The other Extras menu options link externally:

  • Credits
  • Halo Support site
  • Halo Nightfall (only visible on the Xbox version of MCC)
  • Halo 5 (only visible on the Xbox version of MCC)

Halo: Combat Evolved mod tools and client support

For the first release of MCC’s Halo: Combat Evolved modding tools, we are including four different programs. Modders may be familiar with a few, but this release includes the most powerful tools available for Halo: Combat Evolved (for advanced users only!)

On top of that, we are releasing zip files of Halo: Combat Evolved’s level scripts and all the tag files that went into building the campaign and multiplayer levels.

These tools and files are being provided as-is, but we plan to make updates over time to address issues we see discussed in the mod community.

The full blog post on Steam goes into more detail about these tools.

You can download these tools through Steam.

GTFO Devs Confident That Game Will Leave Early Access This Year

It’s been a year and a half since the four-player hardcore co-op action/horror FPS, GTFO entered early access, and while there are still plenty of updates still ahead, developers 10 Chambers feel confident that the game will fully launch this year.

In case you haven’t heard yet, there is a new update available for GTFO dubbed “Rundown Rebirth://EXTENDED,” which added 5 brand-new expeditions, amongst other content. A rather beefy update, if not one of the biggest ones that 10 Chambers games has released for GTFO since entering early access.

While new content is certainly great news, especially for early access players, the big news that was revealed was that 10 Chambers also confirmed, via press release that they are making good progress on the 1.0 update, and that they feel confident that it will release this year.

“We have fleshed out a pretty extensive list of features we want available in GTFO as a Version 1.0 game; we have always wanted the Version 1.0 launch to be felt. The transition from Early Access to Version 1.0 will be noticed in this game – and we feel confident that this transition will happen this year”, says Ulf Andersson, Creative Director.

For those not understanding why the 1.0 release is important, it essentially means that the game is “done,” or it’s full launch state. While people can purchase and play the game right now, the game is by far not a full representation of what the developers want it to be. Early access phases are typically used for general testing purposes to kink out bugs, along with gathering community feedback that will eventually make it’s way into the final release. It is, the “gold” version of the game per say.

While a 1.0 version does mean that the game is “finished,” it doesn’t, however, means that the studio is done with working on the game itself. More than likely we’ll see several major updates come after the 1.0 release, and quite possibly a GTFO console release sometimes after. Though the latter isn’t a guarantee.

GTFO is currently available on Steam Early Access, with a current 20% discount to celebrate the launch of the new update.

Scarlet Nexus Review – Mind Melder

Bandai Namco is bringing the post-apocalyptic setting into the JRPG (Japanese Role-Playing Game) genre with Scarlet Nexus! Battle on as you serve in an elite squadron of gifted individuals, all uniquely powered to face off against brain eating monsters. Does Bandai Namco succeed in creating a new franchise, or does it fall into familiar JRPG tropes and quickly forgotten? Read on for our Scarlet Nexus review.

Humanity’s Last Hope

In a distant future, humanity is on its last line of defense due to a new emergent threat known as the “Others” which are grotesque beasts that seek out humans to devour their brains. Much of humanity is left in shambles, that was until a discovery was made of a new hormone found in the human brain, granting some unique powers known as psionics. In an effort to combat the Others, humanity formed the OSF, otherwise known as the Other Suppression Force. These highly trained soldiers, coupled with their incredibly unique abilities have given the human race a fighting chance. However, all is not as it seems as the mystery behind the Others slowly begins to unravel, revealing a more sinister threat.

This is the premise of Scarlet Nexus, with you taking on the role of two newly recruited cadets known as Yuito Sumeragi and Kasane Randall. While both are known as psychokinetic, people with the abilities to move objects freely with their minds, both characters could not be any more different from one another, which plays deeply into the game’s narrative as each offer their own unique storyline that eventually intertwine for the grand finale.

As far as story goes, I think fans of graphic novels and anime in general are going to absolutely love what Scarlet Nexus has to offer. The main plot is filled to the brim with details, offering a very lengthy, if not too long of a campaign that surely won’t disappoint. While presented in the form that you would expect from a graphic novel, meaning still shots are shown with characters narrating over them, I think this ends up working for the best due to just how much of it there is to tell. This does go without saying that there are still standard in-game cutscenes, and when they do show up, nothing is held back as the action, and visual effects go all out, which act as enjoyable rewards for reaching massive milestones.

Further, Nexus also has a wide variety of side missions that players can undergo while they are on breaks from the main central story. These serve as a great way to rack up additional EXP, as with earning new gear, and learning more about the world of Scarlet Nexus. Some are basic fetch quests, while others can be a bit more complicated, either way if your are looking for replay-ability, it’s all there, although the bonding system also provides quite a bit of side content to explore.

Taking a page out of the Persona franchise (well, it existed before, but it’s a good comparison,) players will meet other OSF members who will fight alongside them during combat. When a main phase (mission) is completed, players will travel back to their safe house, allowing them to freely leave and explore the world of Scarlet Nexus. This is known as the standby phase, and one of the best aspects of this is that you’ll have the opportunity to chat up with all the other characters, and even witness something called a “bond” episode.

Bond episodes are non-playable moments that allow you to sit back and enjoy some deep character building scenes. Like I said, think Persona, minus the time restraints associated as you can perform multiple bond episodes during the standby phase. I enjoyed all of these thoroughly, as not only did it give a good break from all the action, but it allowed the Nexus to take itself less serious, as Bond Moments certainly offer some wackier moments. And like Persona, there are some benefits to bonding and gifting NPCs, as the more you bond the more abilities you unlock with that specific character.

I’ll admit, some users may find that the story does drag on a bit, to the point you may forget important plot details, but for me personally I welcomed the lengthy dialogue as it was meet with equally satisfying combat.

Punches, Slashes, and Telekinesis

Without a doubt, the big highlight of Scarlet Nexus is the combat. While I initially thought it would play more like a Soul-likes game, or even along the lines of Code Vein, I was actually surprise to see more of a resemblance to the incredibly well designed Nier franchise by Square Enix.

The combat is super fluid, with your main attacks being slashes and of course the psychokinetic abilities that mostly revolves around throwing objects. However, a unique ability that both main characters have is that they’re able to sync up with their teammates, who also happen to have psionics powers. These range from granting elemental slashes, time alteration, invisibility, teleportation, and some much more.

The coolest part is that some of these attacks can be combined with one another, which creates an interesting dynamic during combat. You can even chain into different abilities! So, say you want to sneak up behind an Other for a stealth attack, you can and then follow it up with a fiery slash to deal massive damage, and even break some of the armor they’re wearing.

Further, there are two special overdrives systems, them being the Brain Drive and Brain Field. For Brain Drive, I’m not too big of a fan because it triggers automatically. In this state, everything gets heightened as attacks, movement, Psychokinesis powers are all amplified with decreased cooldowns. I’ve had this activate when there was only a single enemy left with a few strikes from death, and in other instances where it could have been extremely useful to make a fight easier.

As for the Brian field, this is also a heightened mode, though more along the lines of a berserk one. You have full control on when you want to activate this, and when you do a special space is created, transferring you and the enemies to it. Here, your psychokinetic attacks are at their all time strongest, though they are they only form of attacks that you have. However, there’s not limit to how frequently you can perform them, and they hit extremely hard, dealing massive damage. There is a time limit to how long you can stay in this mode, but it’s more than likely that you’ll end up finishing the fight within it, even if it’s short span. This is definitely a moment where you truly feel overpowered.

There are some combat woes that I did have. For starters, the enemies that clearly outclass you as you do minuscule amount of damage to them. This by no means is a complaint that the game is hard, but more along the lines of how these fights are presented, because a lot of them you are supposed to lose at, and you simply can’t die within the first minute of them otherwise it’s game over. However, I felt that they’re a waste of healing potions, though those are found abundantly throughout levels and of course shops. Even then, it’s just annoying have to spend 5-8 potions just to stay alive long enough to be “killed.’

Another issue I had were how executions are handled. You see, the game allows you to kill Others in two different ways, one is by depleting their entire life,  and the other by depleting the stamina bar, which in turns allow you to perform an execution-style finisher. They’re meant to be a quicker way to deal with enemies, and in a lot of cases they are. However, you’ll often find that as you deplete the stamina bar, the enemies health is also depleting. By the time the stamina bar is fully gone, a few slashes to their life would be enough to kill them, which is bar far quicker than a full animation. However, it seems it takes even longer, even if their life is at none to finish them off that way. This makes fights drag on a bit longer than they should, and eventually gets repetitive as you watch the same animations over and over.

There is an upgrade system known as Brain Map, which houses a number of different skills. These vary from increase effects, to longer chained combos. For the most, it does its job, and offers some unique paths that players can have fun with. Additionally, this also applies to weapons, though I’ll say it’s the weakest here, at least in my 40-hour plus campaign as I only found a few weapons worth upgrading. Maybe I’m missing something there, but I would say don’t expect much one the weapon side of things as character abilities are more of the focal point.

These are all pretty minor complaints, as the combat is certainly good enough to hold you well throughout both character campaigns. I can’t say I ever felt bored with it, and upon my second playthrough I was discovering new and incredibly fun combos. It has depth that will certainly satisfy the masses, and it definitely hits big in it’s beautiful stylish visuals.

Great Looks, Great Performance

From jammed packed cities, to lush forests, and cold and haunting tundra’s, Scarlet Nexus certainly has a lot of variety when it comes to its environments. There is a lot of locations that players will visit, and while the whole cel-shaded look is by far nothing new, Scarlet Nexus does hold itself very well at creating some gorgeous scenes.

For a game that wants to basically be an anime, it does an amazing job with it’s world and well animated scenes. Everything looks like it could be coming directly out of some sort of anime, as the world is beautifully drawn with rich details. 3D backdrops are some of the best I’ve seen for game though, as often these will be structured as 2D assets. Not in Scarlet Nexus case, or at least for the majority of objects and environments as it all pops beautifully. Not a single thing looked flat to us.

This of course translated into the combat as all those abilities you gain have spectacular animations, are are quite flashy to stare at.

I really don’t have much of a complaint here, outside of maybe wanting a photo-mode to better capture some amazing scenes.

As for performance? Well, I played the game on all console platforms and they all hold a locked frame-rate. I will mention that last-gen versions (PS4 and Xbox One) are capped off at 30fps (frames-per-second0, while the current-gens (PS5 and Xbox Series) both run at a full 60fps. Dropping back down from 60 to 30 was pretty jarring, but regardless everyone will be happy to know that Scarlet Nexus performs excellent across all platforms. Players on the PS5 and XSX will also be delighted to see the reduced load screens, which Scarlet Nexus has plenty of.

The only “big” difference is on the PS5 as the developers have implemented some haptic feedback. It’s not the most use you’ll see in a game, but it is noticeable as you can feel the different weight of objects. For example a small barrel will have quick, but light vibration, whereas a heavy object like a car will have a slower, but stronger vibration. It’s a nice and a welcomed touch if I say so.

Verdict

Scarlet Nexus is an excellent new IP, one that feels fresh and invigorating in not only in it’s story, but also it’s high exhilarating fast paced combat. I am pleasantly surprised, as while I went into this review with little-to no expectations, this title has certainly left a lasting impression on me. There’s a bright future for Scarlet Nexus that we cannot wait to see unravel.

Score: 9/10

Pros:

  • Gameplay is fun and engaging, with depth to be found in it’s ability mixing.
  • The story, while long, was very entertaining with the bond episodes being big highlights.
  • Gorgeous locations to explore, and incredible detailed back drops. Performs great on all platforms.
  • Plenty of replay value.
  • Didn’t talk music, but overall it’s very good and fits the punk theme of the game.

Cons:

  • Some annoying combat mechanics, execution animations get very repetitive.
  • More diverse weapons and better upgrade options are needed.

A review code for Scarlet Nexus was provided by the publisher and played on PS5, Xbox Series, Xbox One, and PS4 . You can read SP1st and MP1st’s review and scoring policy right here.

Marvel’s Avengers Update 1.000.017 June 23 Rolled Out

Crystal Dynamics has released the Marvel’s Avengers update 1.000.017 June 23 patch today, and this is for the major security issue wherein players’ IP addresses were shown on screen for everyone to see! This patch isn’t available on PS4, and is not to be confused with yesterday’s Cosmic Cube Event update that brought in the security issue.

Marvel’s Avengers Update 1.000.017 June 23 Patch Notes:

Here’s the announcement from the studio yesterday:

We are currently testing a solution to the issue of personal information, including the player’s IP address and username, being displayed on screen on PS5 and plan to deploy a hotfix tomorrow at around 8AM PT.

PlayStation 5 players should refrain from streaming or posting screenshots online until then as sensitive information may be displayed.

As you can guess from the timing now, yes, the patch is out and is a small download. Hopefully, this doesn’t bring in any new issues. If there are other gameplay-related changes or technical fixes included in this patch, we’ll be sure to update the post to reflect it.
