PS4 9.00 Beta Invites Being Sent Out, Here’s What’s in the Upcoming Firmware Update

While the big news this week regarding PlayStation is the PS5’s on-going beta that lets people add an M.2 SSD, PS4 owners aren’t being left out, as PS4 9.00 beta invites are being sent out today, and what’s more, we now know what’ll be in this firmware update!

Check your emails to see if you got an invite, but if you didn’t here are the main features coming with the PS4 9.00 beta:

Main features updated in this System Software Beta Program version

  • You can now view trophies for PS5 games on PS4
  • In Messages, if you’re the owner of a group, you can now delete it. Open the options menu, and then select [Delete Group]. If you delete a group, it will be deleted for all members.
  • Now when you block someone, you can choose to also leave the group that only you and they are in at the same time. You won’t leave groups that include other players.

Other update features

  • When a child requests to use communication features for

Yeah, it might not be as groundbreaking as what the PS5 gamers are currently testing with, but given the PS4’s lifecyle is winding down, it’s still good on Sony to be rolling out new features for the console.

Thanks, digidude23!

Along the way, the cat befriends a small flying drone, known only as B12. With the help of this newfound companion, the duo try to find a way out.

Seagate Firecuda 530 SSD is Now Compatible With the PS5

Looks like one of the biggest solid state drives out in the market today can now be used with the latest console in the PlayStation series, as Seagate Firecuda 530 SSD is now compatible with the PS5 — bringing some much welcomed storage options to the next gen system!

In a feature by Finder, the Firecuda 530 is being primed for release in most territories this August, and the timing of its release couldn’t be perfect for PS5 users — as the device can read 7,300 MB/s sequential read and 6,900 MS/s sequential write. Jeff Park, country manager for Seagate Technology, ANZ has confirmed that the device is ready for users of Sony’s newest console to take advantage of it.

We have done some testing with Sony on the PlayStation 5 and today we can confirm that the FireCuda 530 with the heatsink has met all the PS5 requirements. With the PS5 design, the SSD card slot is very narrow, so there’s not much room for the SSD to mount. However, with the FireCuda 530 – even with the heatsink on the top – the slim design allows for it to fit. Of course, the FireCuda 530 without the heatsink is slimmer, so both of them will fit into the PS5.”

If you missed it, PS5 beta firmware added M.2 SSD support for expanded storage — but it’s trickier than it sounds and you can read about the details on that here.

Crimson Desert Delayed to Unspecified New Release Date By Pearl Abyss

Looks like one of the more promising looking open-world action games needs more time on the development cycle, as Crimson Desert has been delayed to a unspecified new release date by developer Pearl Abyss — showing that there’s more stuff to be worked on before it’s released.

Announcing the delay via the official Twitter account of the game, the Crimson Desert team laid out the reasons why they had to make the difficult decision.

While delays aren’t a new thing in the world of video games, Crimson Desert certainly felt like a bold and ambitious game that warranted a lot of time and dedication to make it live up to its promises and the expectations of gamers who were looking forward to it. Pearl Abyss is known for their other fantasy driven MMORPG game Black Desert Online — which has earned 20 million users and growing since it was released for PC, consoles, and mobile devices in December of 2014.

As the letter reads, the team has found that work on Crimson Desert has evolved — and they need to dedicate more time to see those new ideas and a richer gaming experience realized. We look forward to seeing what’s in store after seeing that epic gameplay trailer released months back at The Game Awards here.

Crimson Desert was originally scheduled for a Winter 2021 release for PC and consoles.

PS5 Beta Firmware Adds M.2 SSD Support for Expanded Storage, But It’s a Bit Trickier Than Expected

If you’re a PS5 owner, chances are one of the main (if not the main) features you’re looking forward to the most is being able to slot in another SSD (Solid State Drive) to your console so you can expand its memory. Well, the PS5 beta firmware that’s live now for certain participants are able to do just that, though it’s a lot more tricker than expected.

First off, before we dive into the M.2 SSD stuff, here are some of the new stuf players can expect from the PS5 beta being tested now by participants according to Japanese journalist Munechika Nishida: (via Exputer)

  • M.2 SSD support.
  • UX Improvements
  • 3D Audio support for TV Speakers
  • A handful of customization options
  • Control Center can be more personalized (rearrange controls etc)
  • View/write messages
  • Updated Friends Tab
  • PS4/5 game versions are now separated on the home screen/library
  • Trophy tracker
  • New Accolade: Leader
  • Auto recording Highlights
  • Improved Social features
  • New fonts added for editing screenshots
  • Improved Notifications

For now, the beta is only available in the US, Japan, Canada and Germany.

As for expanding your storage for the PS5, there’s some good news and bad news. The good news is, we won’t be locked to any proprietary SSD that’s being sold by Sony. The bad new? It’s a wee bit trickier than expected.

Sony has launched help and FAQ page for beta participants that are aiming to add an M.2 SSD to their PS5 console. While there’s a significant amount of info to be parsed  below that’s straight from Sony themselves, do remember that this is all from a beta, so there’s a possibility that not everything mentioned below will be the same once this update is out in the wild.

What is an M.2 SSD?

M.2 SSD devices are a high-speed solid state drive medium that PS5 beta users can install to upgrade the storage capacity of their PS5 console or PS5 Digital Edition console (separate purchase required). We recommend verifying that you’ve received a beta invitation before purchasing a new M.2 SSD.

Which M.2 SSDs can be used with a PS5 console?

It’s important that you only use a supported M.2 SSD to expand your PS5 console storage. Make sure you’re using an M.2 SSD that meets the following requirements. As this is a beta, please note the final specifications may change ahead of the official system software release.

PS5 console M.2 SSD requirements:

Interface: PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD

Capacity: 250GB – 4TB

Cooling structure: Using an M.2 SSD with your PS5 console requires effective heat dissipation with a cooling structure, such as a heatsink. You can attach one to your M.2 SSD yourself, either in a single-sided format, or double-sided format. There are also M.2 SSDs that have cooling structures (such as heatsinks) built in.

Sequential read speed: 5,500MB/s or faster is recommended

Module width: 22mm width (25mm width is not supported)

Form Factor: M.2 type 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110.
These numbers can be found on retail listings for M.2 SSD devices. The first two digits refer to the width, the remaining digits to the length.

Socket type: Socket 3 (Key M)

Total size including cooling structure:
In millimeters: smaller than 110mm (L) x 25mm (W) x 11.25mm (H).
In inches: smaller than 4.33in (L) x 0.984 in (W) x 0.442in (H).

See below for full requirements.

Length

The following M.2 SSD lengths are compatible with PS5 consoles:
30mm, 42mm, 60mm, 80mm, 110mm (corresponding to the form factor type, per above).

Width
A 22mm-wide M.2 SSD module is required.
The total structure (including an added cooling structure) cannot exceed 25mm (0.984in).

Height
The total height of the M.2 SSD and its cooling structure (such as a heatsink) – whether built-in or separate – must be less than 11.25mm (0.442in).
The height must also be in the right place, in relation to the M.2 SSD’s circuit board:

  • The size below the board must be less than 2.45mm (0.096in).
  • The total size above the board must be less than 8mm (0.314in).

(Note: millimeter measurements are the technical standard and are more precise than inches. We recommend double-checking that the total dimensions of M.2 SSD and heatsink products you’re considering meet the millimeter requirements before purchasing)

M.2 SSD with a built in heatsink dimensions
M.2 SSD with a single heatsink
M.2 SSD with double heatsinks
  • Both single-sided and double-sided M.2 SSD devices are supported.
  • M.2 SATA SSDs aren’t supported.
  • You should carefully review drive specifications prior to purchase and contact the vendor or manufacturer if you need further information. SIE cannot guarantee that all M.2 SSD devices meeting the described specifications will work with your console and assumes no responsibility for the selection, performance or use of third-party products.
  • Not all games are necessarily playable with the exact same performance provided by the PS5 console’s internal Ultra-High Speed SSD, even where the M.2 SSD device’s sequential read speed is faster than 5500MB/s.
  • The majority of M.2 SSD devices with the above type numbers (M Key Type 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110) and without a built-in cooling structure will fit the PS5 console’s SSD slot. However, sizes for cooling structures (like heatsinks) vary greatly. If you are not sure an M.2 SSD or cooling structure (such as a heatsink) you’re considering meets the size requirements outlined here, we recommend looking for another product option or contacting the vendor or manufacturer for more information.

How to add an M.2 SSD to a PS5 console

Before you begin, you’ll need:

  • A well-lit room with a table to work on.
  • A #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver.
  • A small flashlight (optional).

Important: This feature is only available to beta users at this time. If you have installed your M.2 SSD in a console that does not have beta system software installed, you need to remove your M.2 SSD before you can update the system software.

Before proceeding with the installing or removing process, touch a metal-grounded object to remove any static electricity from your body. Failure to do so may cause damage to your M.2 SSD or PS5 console.

The full step-by-step guide to installing it can be seen here.
There’s also an FAQ since loads of gamers will have questions about SATA drives, and the like.

Frequently asked questions

Can I insert a SATA drive into the PS5 console?
No.

Should I remove the M.2 SSD if I send my PS5 console for repair?
Yes. Please remove the M.2 SSD before sending it for repair.

Can I format part of the M.2 SSD for use on the PS5 console?
No, you must format the entire M.2 SSD.

Is it okay to install a heatsink on an M.2 SSD with a built-in heatsink?
No. If your M.2 SSD has a built-in heatsink, we recommend against adding any additional heatsinks. Doing so may reduce the effectiveness of the built-in heatsinks.

How is an M.2 SSD different to USB extended storage on PS5 consoles?
PS5 games are playable on M.2 SSD storage.
PS5 games can be downloaded directly to M.2 SSD storage.
PS5 games can be updated on M.2 SSD storage.

Is it possible to store part of a game on M.2 SSD storage?
No.

What should I do if I experience gameplay issues when I play games stored on an M.2 SSD?

  1. Press the PS button on your controller to go to the control center, and then select Downloads/Uploads. Pause any ongoing downloads.
  2. If you are trying to play a game on disc, please wait for the full installation to finish.
  3. If you are still having issues, please move the game from M.2 SSD storage to console storage.

Do PS5 consoles support Host Memory Buffer?
No. Additionally, M.2 SSD devices that support HMB (Host Memory Buffer) may see slower-than-expected performance because the PS5 does not support HMB.

Apex Legends Seer Abilities Revealed in New Character Trailer

With Apex Legend’s Emergence chapter hitting in just a few days, Respawn has released a new and in-depth look at the upcoming legend, Seer! This Apex Legends Seer abilities overview trailer features the character’s abilities and ultimate, and how it can be used in gameplay!

Apex Legends Seer Abilities and Ultimate:

Backstory:

SEER

Ambush Artist

Before his birth, it was foretold that Seer would bring pain and suffering to the world–and the night he was born, a meteor barreled across the sky and struck his world’s moon. It was considered a bad omen, and when the pale blue eyes of Obi Edolasim opened, his community saw a cursed child. His parents did not; they loved him unconditionally because they saw the true empathic, creative soul of their son. They even supported him when he was drawn to the theatricality of the Arenas, where he could express himself fully.

At first, the crowds felt unsure of him. But over time, with each victory, the power inside him grew, and with it, his strength in the Arena. And as his reputation began to precede him, a strange thing happened… The people in the crowd who were downtrodden, outcast, and forgotten—they saw themselves in Seer. Soon, throngs of people would come out just to see him fight—cheering Seer on as their champion. Now, this legend from the Arenas is making his way to the Apex Games and there isn’t a single soul who hasn’t already heard his name. The boy born under a bad omen and a terrible myth has taken this tale and created an even greater legend. He is Seer— an icon of the shunned, the unaccepted, and the unabashedly original.

Real Name: Obi Edolasim

Age: 26

Home World: Boreas

Tactical Ability: Focus of Attention – Seer summons his micro-drones to emite a delayed blast that goes through walls interrupting and revealing enemies.

Passive Ability: Heart Seeker – Hear and visualize the heartbeats of nearby enemies when aiming down sights

Ultimate Ability: Exhibit – Create a sphere of micro-drones taht reveal the location of enemies moving quickly or firing their weapons within.

For more on Emergence, check out the gameplay trailer where we see the new weapons and more in action!

Apex Legend’s Emergence is set for release this August 3, and once it’s out, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.

Greedfall Update 1.08 Patch Notes | Greedfall Update 1.003 Patch Notes:

  • Fixed a bug where the Hammer of the Forgotten God was misplaced when the character attended to upgrade it

All versions:

If you’ve yet to play the game, Greedfall garnered an impressive 8.5/10 from us where we also said,  This is the Spiders’ best work to date. The team absolutely deserves praise and if this is any indication of their growth going forward, Spider is one for RPG fans to keep tabs on.  Greedfall is one of my favorite gaming experiences of 2019.”

Nathan Fillion Responds to Not Being Cast in the Uncharted Movie

Looks like the favorite choice by fans to play Nathan Drake on film has broken his silence. Nathan Fillion (a fan-fave to play Drake that goes as far back as the first Uncharted game) responds to not being cast in the Uncharted movie — which has already finished production and is slated for release early next year.

In an interview with GAMINGbible while promoting The Suicide Squad, Fillon weighed his thoughts on the matter as well as being frustrated that it took so long to get an Uncharted film made since it’s one of the most popular modern video game franchises to date.

“‘My only regret is that we had to wait so very, very long for someone to do something so we could actually see some Uncharted stuff,”

“Other than that, I think all my boxes have been checked. I’m pretty excited to see what they do with that. I love movies and those guys have never let us down; Tom Holland, come on, Mark Wahlberg. We’re gonna have a great time.”

Despite not being in the actual movie, Fillion has nothing but exciting thoughts on what’s coming with the Ruben Fleisher directed live action film — which is set to be released on February 18, 2022. Also, the actor can say he played Nathan Drake in a fan film a few years ago — which you can see below and is the reason why so many Uncharted fans wanted him for the role officially.

While the Uncharted movie is coming early next year, the voice actor of Nathan Drake in Nolan North is unsure if a new Uncharted game is in the works — and he has stated that there will be problems if he isn’t in it! You can read about that here!

Update: We mistakenly tagged Nathan Fillion as the voice actor for Nathan Drake and have amended the story. Apologies for any confusion this has caused.

Halo Infinite Technical Preview Schedule, Content, Weapon Drills & More Info Overview

In case you didn’t know, gamers wil get their first chance to try out Halo Infinite’s multiplayer this weekend with teh Technical Preview! If you managed to get an email invite, you’ll be able to partake in the first sample of the game. Wondering what the Halo Infinite Technical Preview schedule, content and the like will be? We’re here to help!

What’s the Halo infinite Technical Preview Schedule?

    • Thursday, July 29: Tech preview is officially live! Go wild, Spartans.
    • Friday, July 30 Scheduled Play Times: 12-2 PM PT, 7-9 PM PT
    • Saturday, July 31 Scheduled Play Times: 12-2 PM PT, 7-9 PM PT
    • Sunday, August 1 Scheduled Play Times: 12-2 PM PT, 7-9 PM PT
    • Monday, August 2: Tech preview closes at 10 AM PT

What Content Will Be Available in the Technical Preview?

  • Available Content: Bot Slayer, Weapon Drills, Waypoint vNext
  • Support and Feedback: Halo Support’s Insider site will be available for players to use all weekend. Those that make it into the tech preview will have access to new links that will only be available to invitees – please check your forthcoming email and/or Waypoint message for the appropriate links!

BOT SLAYER

At the very center of this tech preview will be the Bot Slayer playlists which feature 4 players squaring off against 4 Bots on one of three possible maps (Live Fire, Bazaar, and Recharge). Please note that while players can team up online, splitscreen is not supported in this build.

With bots being a brand-new addition to Halo, we’re excited to get a chance to let you go toe-to-toe with our state-of-the-art spar partners. Bots also utilize our dedicated servers in a different way than standard matchmade games so it’s extra critical we get large-scale, real-world testing to help ensure a smooth launch this holiday.

We’re going to kick things off with the lowest skill level of Bots on a single map to help everyone get acclimated and ease into the experience. If the community can collectively help us hit our daily engagement goals over the course of the flight, we’ll increase the Bots’ skill and add more maps. The more bots you slay, the more the experience will evolve! They’ll get more deadly with each update – so, dive in early and often to make sure you’ve got a handle on what skills they’re bringing to the battlefield.

SOCIAL ARENA (CONDITIONAL)

If we’re able to hit our target engagement and testing goals for the Bot Slayer before the flight concludes, we’re looking to enable a brief opportunity for some good old fashion 4v4 Social Arena Slayer. If we hit this phase, expect it to land sometime in the final stretch of the flight (i.e. Sunday evening) and expect there to be a few potential hiccups with your experience.

Specifically, we know that in some cases players will end up in a bad state as a session is forming and after a brief delay, will be kicked back to the main menu. As a result, the game itself will start as 4v3 which is certainly a less than desired experience all-around. However, as a technical preview, getting additional scale data around this problem, across a breadth of hardware, can be invaluable to the team as they work to solve this issue. Based on our prior private flights, we can generally expect that on average, a match will start with a full 4v4 approx. 60% of the time while the other 40% involves a 4v3 start with the final player joining-in-progress within a minute.

We’d love to get some additional testing and data to help the team, but we really want to ensure players understand the experience and potential hiccups before jumping in. Tech preview participants should stay tuned to @Halo and the in-game news feed to know if and when Social Arena gets enabled.

WEAPON DRILLS

Interested in locking in your aim? Are you certain your skills with the Commando surpass that of all your friends? Now you can prove it. In this tech preview you can put your skills to the test with the following subset of Weapon Drills:

  • MA40 AR
  • BR75
  • MK50 Sidekick
  • CQS48 Bulldog
  • Needler
  • VK78 Commando
  • S7 Sniper
  • Plasma Pistol
  • Pulse Carbine
  • Ravager
  • Heatwave
  • Skewer

Players participating can also check out the Battle Pass and there’s also “Waypoint vNext” which won’t even require player take part in this first test!

BATTLE PASS AND MENU UI

In the upcoming tech preview, we’re going to be granting Halo Insiders a set amount of in-game credits (cR) so that they can dig in with a very trimmed-down version of our first Battle Pass. (Worry not, we’re saving plenty of content for launch.) As a reminder, none of the items unlocked over the course of tech previews will carry over to the game’s release later this year. Everything should be considered work-in-progress and not indicative of the final shipping systems including the cost of customization pieces in the store, the order in which they’re unlocked in the Pass, the XP granted by challenges, and more.

The key focus here will be to test out if the systems that dictate when you unlock and equip items are working correctly. So, keep an eye out for anything that doesn’t work how you would expect and let us know. We’re going to have our ears open for your feedback!

WAYPOINT VNEXT

Halo Waypoint’s new version (which we affectionately refer to as “Waypoint vNext”) is going to launch on web for your standard browsing experience, along with iOS and Android in app form. If you’re joining us for tech previews, then you’ll be able to use this same experience to edit and update your Spartan in Halo Infinite. If you’re not in the tech preview but are still interested in checking it out – feel free to! Everything will work for MCC and Halo 5 as well.

Don’t forget, we’ll have gameplay footage up (and hopefully early impressions) very soon once the Technical Preview is available!

Battlefield 2042 Ranked or eSport Mode Not Available at Launch, Devs Want to Hear From Community About It First

With more and more online multiplayer games striving to hit the eSport scene, could Battlefield 2042 be the next game on the list? It seems that’s a Battlefield 2042 ranked mode or eSport mode is not part of DICE or Ripple Effect Studios’ priority — at least at launch.

Speaking to Battlefield Nation in a video interview, Ripple Effect Studios Senior Design Director Justin Wiebe confirmed that a Battlefield 2042 eSport mode or ranked mode won’t be available at launch, and this is something the devs would want to hear more of from the Battlefield community.

Yeah, so so there’s no plan to have any kind of ranked or esport mode at launch. This is something that obviously we want to hear more about from the community. If again, this — I’m using this phrase a lot — but if that’s something that’s important to the community, we’d like to hear about it, and you know, we’ll kind of see what happens after that.

Well, there you have it. Personally, I don’t think the Battlefield franchise needs a ranked or eSport mode given the franchise’s unpredictability in matches is one of the key things that make it standout, and is something I doubt the eSport scene would embrace given how random it is.

Would you want to see an eSport/ranked mode in Battlefield 2042? Let us know down in the comments.

Halo Infinite Will Allow Players to Drop Weapons, FOV Slider Confirmed for Consoles

With the Halo Infinite Technical Preview going live this weekend for those who got the lucky email, 343 Industries has kicked off what’s going to take place by hosting a a first look at Halo Infinite multiplayer gameplay today.

In the Twitch presentation where the studio showcased the game, 343 Industries has confirmed that players will now be able to drop weapons in Halo Infinite — which is a first in franchise history! During the video presentation, 343 Industries Producer of Live Operations Sam Hanshaw went over the options menu where the “drop weapon” button can be seen on both the Xbx controller and on keyboard! We’ve even taken screenshots for those who weren’t able to see it:

During the presentation, Hanshaw even acknowledged how veteran Halo nultiplayer gamers can use this simple but new feature to help newbies stating, ““It’s been quite fun to use, especially when you’re playing with some less experienced players, you can secure rockets for them and hand it over to them and they get to play around with a power weapon they might not normally have gotten.”

In addition to that, an FOV (Field of View) slider has been confirmed for consoles too! During the show, Brian Jarrad, Community Director of Halo at 343 Industries confirmed that the slider will be coming to multiple platforms on day one! Here’s a screengrab of the options menu where we can see it:

If you somehow didn’t get a Technical Preview invite when it went out yesterday, don’t fret! MP1st is in the tech test and we’ll be dishing out gameplay footage and other info the moment we can, so stay tuned!

Halo Infinte is set for release this holiday on the Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
