Titanfall on X1 Likely to Receive a Resolution Patch In The Future, Targeting 900p or 1080p

In response to the reports on Titanfall’s resolution on Xbox One, Respawn Entertainment’s lead engineer, Richard Baker, had a few things to share.

“We’ve been experimenting with making it higher and lower,” Baker told Eurogamer. “One of the big tricks is how much ESRAM we’re going to use, so we’re thinking of not using hardware MSAA and instead using FXAA to make it so we don’t have to have this larger render target.”

Baker assured that Respawn is “going to experiment”. He went on to explain, “the target is either 1080p non-anti-aliased or 900p with FXAA. We’re trying to optimise… we don’t want to give up anything for higher res. So far we’re not 100 per cent happy with any of the options, we’re still working on it.”

The day one patch for Titanfall on Xbox One has already been released, however it didn’t increase the pixel count. “For day one it’s not going to change. We’re still looking at it for post-day one. We’re likely to increase resolution after we ship.”

“A lot of the performance is on the GPU side. There’s still room for optimisation and we’re still working on it. Ideally it would have been a rock-solid 60 all the time when we shipped but obviously when there’s big fights going on, lots of particle effects, lots of physics objects… we’re still working to condense the systems, make them more parallel so we can hit 60 all the time, ideally.”

Rich Baker added, “there was an issue with decals taking a lot more time than they should which we fixed for launch,” he said. “The worst-case scenarios are better, I think. The average is probably about the same as the beta.”

The PC and Xbox One versions of Titanfall drop tomorrow in North America, later this week for Europe. You can learn more about the digital release schedule here.

Report – Drop Zone Playlist to be Introduced in Call of Duty: Ghosts

The game mode Drop Zone appears to be making its way back to the Call of Duty series.

The community-made game mode become popular back in Modern Warfare 3, even causing controversy when it was removed. However, since it was a fan-favorite, Infinity Ward reintroduced the game mode for MW3 players.

Over on Reddit, user Gotopiz discovered that after the recent Call of Duty: Ghosts patch, a script for the game mode was added to the title. You can take a look at a few images of the game mode below.

Will Titanfall Kill Call of Duty?

For the second time in his career, video game developer Vince Zampella walks an unfavorable path potentially leading him to the figurative death of some of his most accomplished work – the death of Call of Duty.

Now head of Respawn Entertainment, Zampella finds himself in a unique position that not many developers, if any at all, have ever had the slight misfortune of finding themselves in.

As we all know, both Zampella and partner Jason West left Medal of Honor: Allied Assault developer 2015, Inc. and publisher Electronic Arts to form their very own studio under rival publisher Activision back in 2002. That studio was Infinity Ward, which went on to kick off the highly popular first-person shooter franchise that would directly compete with their earlier project and would eventually crush it. That MOH-killer is what we all know and love (or hate) today as Call of Duty.

West-and-Zampella

Jason West (left) and Vince Zampella (right)

Over a decade later, after a severe bout of turbulence with publisher Activision, Zampella and West parted ways in the midst of Call of Duty’s booming success to head up newly formed studio Respawn Entertainment, once again under the wing and financial support of Electronic Arts. Following West’s eventual departure, Zamepella and gang now march towards the launch of their debut project only hours away, a sci-fi shooter called Titanfall.

While the intent to commit the bloody murder of Call of Duty, now in the hands of Activision-owned studios Treyarch, Sledgehammer Games, and Infinity Ward (or what’s left of it), is likely not on the minds of the ex-Call of Duty creators, it’s clear that the first-person shooter community sees things a tad differently. With the Titanfall hype train at full speed, the question on everyone’s mind is, ‘will Titanfall kill Call of Duty?’

Call of Duty has been around for a while now, and, as is the case with any excessively popular fad or fashion style, there are more than a few onlookers who want to see it go away for one reason or another. Many looked to EA and DICE’s epic-scale warfare shooter, Battlefield 4, to crush its competition. But as recent history goes, despite pushing the boundaries of what a first-person shooter is, both EA and DICE did nothing more than prove that a rushed product is not a good product. So, on the eve of Titanfall’s launch, can Zampella, with the help of his team, plant the seed once more that would grow into the old oak that overshadows the rest the forest’s envious trees?

Titanfall

Speaking strictly in terms of sales numbers and units sold, Titanfall will barely scratch the surface of Call of Duty’s current monopoly. Launching on only three platforms, the most important of which is currently being outperformed by Sony’s PlayStation 4 in sales, Titanfall statistically doesn’t have the foundation to ‘kill Call of Duty’. That said, Respawn’s shooter will undoubtedly hijack a significant chunk of Call of Duty: Ghosts’ already thin Xbox One audience. Hovering anywhere between 15,000 to 50,000 Xbox One users online throughout any given day, chances are Activision doesn’t want to give up any more of those already unimpressive numbers, and Titanfall is bound to be one of the console’s strongest launches yet.

But what about gameplay? Will Titanfall prove that Call of Duty’s formula is outdated? The answer to that is a bit more complicated.

After hours of playtime in the Alpha, Beta, and at press events, I have zero doubts that Titanfall will be the most fun-filled first-person shooter you will play all year, if not in the last few years. Jet packs, wall runs, double jumps, giant mechs, space guns – Titanfall has everything it needs to become that addicting substance that stimulates your eyes, ears, and other senses night after night. In that sense, I think Titanfall will blow Call of Duty out of the water. As they say, having fun is what playing video games is all about, and Titanfall appears to have it in spades. However, it’s through Respawn’s more casual and accessible approach that I think Call of Duty will maintain the upper hand in a few areas.

Ghosts

As it stands, Titanfall has yet to convince me that it carries the sort of competitive spirit that appeals to the more hardcore shooter audience. I’m mainly speaking to Titanfall’s introduction of AI grunts in player vs. player battles. Respawn has shown that its inclusion results in more action-heavy games that keep the pace constantly rolling. But direct competition between strictly human players is, in itself, a key ingredient in what’s fun for a lot of FPS enthusiasts. That, my friends, is impossible to emulate through anything computer or cloud-controlled.

Take one of the most beloved FPS games of all time: Counter-Strike. What makes it so addicting and so fun for so many? A wide selection of maps? Thousands of weapon choices? Pretty graphics? No. In fact, some of the most dedicated of CS players boot up match after match on only one map, settle on only one or two favorite weapons, and play with all graphics settings turned low. So what drives them when such little variation is involved in a shooter that boasts only some of the most basic principles of game design? I think it’s pretty simple: the primal instinct to prove yourself better others. And the less complicated the medium through which that sort of competition lies, the better. Perks, killstreaks, and weapon attachments aside, when it comes down to it, Call of Duty is all about one nerd using his or her chosen input device to outsmart, outplay, or outgun another nerd – and they love it.

While Titanfall will be busy making tens of thousands of thumb stick and keyboard warriors feel like a totally badass space mech pilot shooting down or stomping on grunt after grunt, Call of Duty will always be there to remind you how bad you suck at shooters, constantly – hopefully – driving you to improve. In the end, it really comes down to what your definitition of fun is.

Titanfall

So, will Titanfall ‘kill Call of Duty’? I think, for some, the answer is clear on an individual basis. For every one gamer that will be more than happy to throw Call of Duty out the window and never look back, another simply won’t see what a game like Titanfall has to offer. I think most will come to realize that both are here to stay. As the new kid on the block, Titanfall has a lot to prove while, at the same time, it’s clear Mr. Zampella and his colleagues know how to make a good game. Call of Duty, on the other hand, still has some fight left and a lengthy future ahead of it.

It will surely be interesting to revisit this topic in few years, however, on the eve of Call of Duty 2016 and Titanfall 2.

What are your thoughts? Can Titanfall and Call of Duty co-exist peacefully?

Titanfall – Respawn Will Have “Good News Soon” Regarding Australian Servers

Titanfall fans in Australia and New Zealand are in for some “good news”, according to Respawn Entertainment head Vince Zampella.

Judging by recent tweets, it looks like the studio may be gearing up to make an announcement regarding local Azure server support in the region soon.

Connection issues have been a major point of concern amongst gamers in that part of the world. As some readers have directly pointed out to us via email, connection quality during the game’s beta last month was not ideal. Thus far, Microsoft has been unable to confirm exactly when data centers in the region might open up. But by the looks of it, it doesn’t seem to be likely that they’ll appear in time for Titanfall’s launch.

A similar circumstances in South Africa eventually lead to the game’s cancellation in the region, sadly.

Titanfall launches on March 11 in North America, March 13 in Europe and Australia, and March 14 in the UK.

Thanks, VG247.

Titanfall on Xbox One Allegedly Confirmed to Run at 792p, Despite Hopes of Improvement

Recent reports allegedly confirm that the Xbox One version of Titanfall is running at a 792p resolution.

According to Reddit user “revimack” who claims to have counted the pixels, that is the final, shipped resolution the Xbox One version of the game will be running at. You can check out the screens used for reference here.

Earlier, it was noted that the studio was hoping to push the resolution closer to 900p by launch, though official channels have yet to make mention of that happening.

Last week, we learned that Titanfall’s install size on the Xbox One is just over 16 GB.

Titanfall – Respawn is ‘Working On’ Unlocking FPS on PC

Respawn Entertainent CEO Vince Zampella says the studio is working on unlocking Titanfall‘s 60 FPS cap on the PC.

During the Titanfall beta on the PC, a number of gamers were upset with the fact that the game would run no faster than 60 frames per second, as it was strictly locked at that rate. Yesterday, Zampella answered one questioner on Twitter asking about the possibility of it being unlocked in a day one patch.

Though it won’t be the game’s first patch, it sounds like it eventually will make it in:

Users resorted to turning on V-sync to alter the frame rates during the beta, though it would cause noticeable input lag and screen tearing. Hopefully, PC gamers won’t have to wait too long for a fix.

Titanfall Isn’t Out Yet, But Players Have Already Prestiged, aka ‘Regenerated’

Are you counting down the hours until Titanfall finally releases? Did you set your alarms according to the release table?

We are sorry to tease you, but it appears that some players have already ranked up in Titanfall to 2nd generation, or simply ‘prestiged’ in Call of Duty talk.

As we have reported earlier, Titanfall features a ranking system that allows you to reset and start from scratch after reaching level 50 – up to 10 generations in total. We have come across a few people on Twitter and Reddit who have already “regenerated” since Respawn doesn’t mind you playing the game early, as long as you don’t upload footage.

UPDATE

Respawn community manager Abbie Heppe has informed us that the studio doesn’t intend to reset stats at launch.

Cancelled Crash Team Racing Reboot Footage Leaks

Here’s a blast from the past, famed PlayStation icon, Crash Bandicoot, was planned to get another game after nearly a decade of being asleep.

The original racer, Crash Team Racing, that released for the PS1 back in the 90’s was an excellent title for couch versus. Later, Activision bought the rights to the franchise and developed a few other titles including sequels to CTR.

Sadly though, it seems that he won’t be coming out of this long winter hibernation, as the project was later cancelled. Also, Crash Bandicoot was rumored to make a return in Sony’s version of Super Smash Brothers, All-Star Battle Royale. However, he did not make it.

Why do all my childhood dream continue to get crushed?

EA Rep Confirms Battlefield 4 Console Rent-a-Server Coming “Soon”

Rentable Battlefield 4 servers are confirmed to be making their way to consoles “soon”, according to an EA representative.

Over on the Battlelog forums, a user inquiring about rentable Battlefield 4 servers on consoles had his question answered by an EA rep who goes by the name “EA_Stiv”.

“Indeed, it is coming,” the rep said. “I’m afraid we don’t have any information on this quite yet, but it is coming soon!”

The ability to rent a server on consoles was a major feature of 2011’s Battlefield 3, though, as is the case with Battlefield 4, they weren’t available at launch, but at a later date. They offer players the ability to tweak game settings and map/mode rotations, offering a more customizable experience.

EA CCO On Battlefield Complainers

Electronic Arts chief creative officer, Rich Hilleman, had some interesting and rather frank words to say about gamers who constantly complain about games like DICE’s Battlefield 4.

Recorded at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business last September, Hilleman spoke about his position at EA, what it entails, and what his responsibilities are. At one point during the talk, the topic shifted to Battlefield’s reception amongst core FPS gamers. Hilleman spoke frankly and honestly about those who spend their time complaining about the game:

We watch our forums a lot, because we care what our players have to say, and [on] some of those forums we’re responsible for, one of the things we have learned—especially in the free-to-play space is [that] the people who spend the most time complaining happen to be the people who spent the most money. So my attitude is: “If you spend enough money with me, you get to complain.” If that’s what makes you happy is to go on the forums and complain, you get to complain.

The reason they’re doing that is because they are establishing their place in the social hierarchy on the forum. It is not about our product—it’s about their relationship to the other players. And if I get all twisted up based on what they’re saying, I’m actually going to build a product they don’t like.

…I grew up in Las Vegas, and one of the byproducts of growing up in Las Vegas is that you learn at a very early age is that people lie, like a lot. So, as a result, I really distrust what people say. It isn’t that I don’t like them. It isn’t that I don’t think they’re trying to tell me the truth, but I don’t think it’s a very precise form of communication; and it’s full of all kinds of other stuff that has nothing to do with my objectives.

Clearly, Battlefield 4 hasn’t had the smoothest of launches and DICE has had to spend the last few months putting significant effort into patching the game and bringing it up to expectations. Early Battlefield 4 Premium subscribers who have spent over $110 on their product certainly have a right to be concerned. But do you think there is still truth to Hilleman’s words?

Let us know in the comments!

Thanks, Kotaku.

Watch Dogs Offers Optional Drop-in Multiplayer, Blood, and More

On the heels of the release date announcement for Watch Dogs, Ubisoft held a Q&A session for fans covering a few pertinent topics.

During the livestream, Danny Belanger, lead game designer, shed more light on how players can interact with one another and what mechanisms are in place to prevent some players from ruining the game for others.

“All the online activities are just part of the menu,” stated Belanger on the livestream, via Polygon. “They’re a choice. But if someone is not into that …. they can totally turn it off.”

Should you choose to keep that option on, Ubisoft has designed the system in way to prevent your game from being spoiled. He added, “there’s also something important called the shield.”

“If someone comes into your game, they can’t come in right after so you can’t be spammed in that way — unless you become aggressive and you start going into other people’s games. Then you really become available. But it’s just a player choice in the end.”

In case you were wondering if the game featured blood since some recent rumors suggested it wouldn’t, Watch Dog’s Creative Director, Jonathan Morin, assured on Twitter that “there’s blood in the game”.

Watch Dogs is slated for May 27th release, featuring several types of multiplayer modes.

Titanfall Fan Builds Giant Atlas Mech In Halo 4

Titahalo? Halofall? Whatever it is, Xbox gamer Aerostrike 04 shows us what it means to be a true Titanfall and Halo fan by building the ultimate testament of dedication towards two of the console’s most exciting first-person shooters.

This gigantic Atlas Mech monument pictured above was built in Halo 4’s Forge Island from Forge pieces normally reserved for building maps and play spaces. I’m not really sure how a match of Team Slayer would play out on this thing, but I don’t think that really matters.

Here’s Aerostrike 04’s creation on Halo Waypoint. (Thanks, AtomicJorge.)

Pretty cool, right?

Watch Dogs Graphics Have Not Been Downgraded, Answers Coming “Soon”

Ubisoft has been under a lot of fire lately with the recent trailer released for Watch Dogs, as many have come to the conclusion that the game has been ‘dumbed down’ in terms of graphics and effects.

Creative Director Jonathan Morin has taken to Twitter to answer many questions concerning this. He stated that the quality hasn’t been dumbed down, despite what the recent trailer is showcasing. When asked about if we could expect to see something similar shown during last year’s E3 demo, he replied “soon”.

Tessa Vilyn, Ubisoft branch manager, also made a few comments about the graphics not being downgraded.

I have to say that from the recent trailer, it does appear that way, but only because the only real gameplay we have seen prior to this has mainly consisted of wet environments, making everything look more ‘shinier’. Though, some of the textures and lightning do look different. I guess only time will truly tell.

On a side note, rumor of consoles and PC resolution have made some waves. Here are the details for platform:

  • PS4: 1080p/30fps
  • Xbox One: 960p/30fps
  • PC: up to 4K/framerate varies

This was reported by The Arab Gamer via VG247, claiming that Ubisoft said this during a press conference.

Microsoft Tease “The Future of Titanfall” Announcement This Monday

Updates:

Vince Zampella reacted to this news on Twitter, “for those asking about the ‘future of titanfall’ announcement, I’m confused as to what that is. We did not sell tf to MS.”

Zampella had a chance to speak with G4’s Geoff Keighly, who’s also involved in the Austin event. And, the CEO of Respawn Entertainment had the following to say, “talked with Geoff Keighley and it looks like the ‘future’ thing is just something fun. Not how I would have described it, but still fun.”

Original Story:

During the latest Major Nelson podcast, Larry Hryb and his co-hosts mentioned that Austin’s Titanfall event will include an announcement on the future of Titanfall.

Xbox’s Jeff Rubenstein explained, “apparently during this live stream, which will start at 11 pm eastern/8 pm pacific, we are going to be exploring or showcasing the future of Titanfall.”

Larry Hryb added that the Xbox team have “no clue” what Respawn Entertainment will be showing. It seems that all Respawn told Microsoft, “we are showcasing the future of Titanfall”.

On Twitter, Rubenstein teased, “I’m told [Respawn] will be unveiling an amazing new collaboration in the Titanfall universe.”

In you are in Austin, the event will be at SXSW on March 10. However, the rest of us will have to catch the Xbox stream on Twitch.

Respawn might be sharing more details about the game’s DLC, which we only know about the release time frame and price points. As always, keep your sight on MP1st for more Titanfall coverage.
