Call of Duty Championship Day 3 Recap – Fariko Impact Are Your New Call of Duty Champions

The biggest competitive Call of Duty tournament in the world, held in Hollywood, California, has come to a close as eight teams walk away ‘in the money’ with a slice of a $1 million prize-pool.

By the end of day 3 of the official Call of Duty Championship, brought to you by Activision in partnership with Xbox Live, only one squad made up of four of game’s best players could be crowned the world’s greatest Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 competitive-level team.

Heading into day 1, 32 teams entered the arena from all corners of the world, some who barely even spoke English. Qualifiers were made up of Black Ops 2 League Play winners, MLG winners, ESL winners, and winners of other top-tier tournaments throughout the world. As we approached final day of the tournament, only 3 teams were left standing.

Catch our recaps of previous days to find out how the events unfolded:

Early on in day 3, Fariko Impact, who were just recently dropped down to the lower bracket, faced OpTic Gaming, who were surprisingly pushed down earlier on in the tournament, to determine who would move on to face the winners of the upper bracket, Team EnVyUs.

When it came down it, Fariko Impact took the win and were set to match up against Team EnVyUs in the final Championship Round for a total of $400,000.

Fighting tooth and nail all the way to game 11, both teams put on a spectacular event, ending in a nail-biting game of Search and Destroy.

Here’s how the bracket went down:

In the end, Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia and game design director David Vonderhaar were proud to announce Fariko Impact as the world’s best Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 players.

Here’s how the breakdown of the $1 million prize pool went:

  • 1st: Fariko Impact – $400,000
  • 2nd: EnVyUs – $200,000
  • 3rd: OpTic Gaming – $120,000
  • 4th: compLexity – $100,000
  • 5th: FeaR – $70,000
  • 6th: Epsilon – $50,000
  • 7th: vVv Gaming – $35,000
  • 8th: InFerno – $25,000

You’ll notice, in the new set-up seen below, players were situated in their own sound-proof boothes so that the audience could enjoy live COD-casting and really get into the competition.

Black Ops 2 Uprising DLC “The Replacers” Trailer and 6 Minutes of Mob of the Dead: Behind-the-Scenes

The job of The Replacer becomes ever more difficult as the next wave of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 downloadable content makes it’s way to gamers this April 16. But, that’s okay – he has help.

[youtube id=”TSpjAos-Om0″ width=”618″ height=”378″]

On April 16, Black Ops 2‘s second DLC, Uprising, will become available to Xbox Live players first, later for PlayStation 3 and PC users. It includes four brand new multiplayer maps – Magma, Encore, Vertigo and Studio – as well as a fresh new Zombies experience Treyarch is calling Mob of the Dead.

Speaking of the dead, a 6-minute behind-the-scenes video of Treyarch’s latest and most ambitious Zombies experience was recently shown to Xbox Live players viewing the recent Call of Duty Championship events from their consoles. We’ve got the entire thing for your viewing pleasure below.

[youtube id=”reLmIEQ2dT8″ width=”618″ height=”378″]

Mob of the Dead places you in the shoes of four prohibition-era mobsters, Billy Handsome (Liotta), Al “The Weasel” Arlington (Pantoliano), Salvatore “Sal” DeLuca (Palmentiri), and Michael “Finn” O’Leary (Madsen), who are serving time in Alcatraz Prison only to discover that being behind bars is the least of their problems.

According to Treyarch, your goal is to assemble a plane using parts in order to get yourself off the zombie-infested island. You’ll be spooked with “contextual music” as you fight new types of crazy zombies on top of the hoards you’re used to, but sometimes in a way you might not be so used to, thanks to the newly introduced Afterlife mode.

Pretty quickly, you’ll notice a brand new heads-up display, as well as the use of classic Civil War weaponry. You’ll also see a new type of perk: the Electric Cherry, which zaps zombies with electricity while you reload.

Pretty scarey/exciting stuff. What do you guys think so far of Treyarch’s latest Zombie creation for Black Ops 2?

Dear Microsoft Regarding Always Online DRM

There’s been a lot of buzz regarding the next Xbox’s security features, namely it’s supposed always online requirement.

Needless to say, this, if true, is a horrible idea.  Not only could it have major negative impact on users, it centralizes their security infrastructure in a way that’s borderline dangerous and certainly “iffy.”

[youtube id=”ZberPj7gI3A” width=”618″ height=”378″]

As consumers, we shouldn’t be forced to deal with always online DRM, especially considering a lot of people don’t even have reliable internet in America, let alone the world.

Let Microsoft know that this isn’t good for users or their security infrastructure.

Black Ops 2 Uprising DLC – Firing Range and Studio Remake Side-by-Side Comparison

With Treyarch having just recently announced Call of Duty: Black Ops 2‘s second DLC, Uprising, fans are already hard at work dissecting and picking apart the latest preview trailer.

As you’ll learn from watching the trailer linked above, the old, fan-favorite multiplayer map from 2010’s Call of Duty: Black Ops, Firing Range, is returning to Black Ops 2, now re-imagined in the form of a Hollywood studio backlot.

One redditor, who goes by the name Llim, has taken it upon himself to directly compare Black Ops’ Firing Range to its Black Ops 2 remake, Studio, based off of images from the trailer, and we think he’s done a pretty darn good job.

You’ll get a pretty good idea of what the new Studio map looks like and how it might play when compared side-by-side with Firing Range. Check out some of the shots he came up with.

Black Ops 2 Uprising DLC’s Studio on the LEFT, Black Ops’ Firing Range on the RIGHT. Click on image to enlarge.

What do you guys think? Excited to get back on the Firing Range? Are you digging the new look? Let’s hear it in the comments below!

Black Ops 2 Uprising drops on the Xbox 360 first April 16th, later on the PlayStation 3 and PC. It comes packed with four new multiplayer maps; Magma, Encore, Vertigo, and Studio, plus a brand new zombies experience called Mob of the Dead.

Borderlands 2 – New Hot Fix Now Live, Pearlescent Weapons Special Effects Detailed

A new Borderlands 2 hot fix rolled out yesterday for all platforms that addressed the following issue according to Gearbox’s community manager, Chris F.

April 3rd Hot Fix Notes

  • (Mr. Torgue DLC) Enemies above Level 50 should no longer appear during “Tier 3 Battle” missions while playing in Normal and True Vault Hunter Mode.

Remember folks, a hot fix is only applied if you’re connected to the internet while playing Borderlands 2. That means the above issue is only addressed if you are connected to the internet. Luckily, you can expect it to be to become permanent once the next patch is available.

With the recent addition of the new pearlescent weapons, those who haven’t been lucky enough to score the newest tier of loot off of a chest or legendary loot midgets might be rather curious. We have compiled a short list of what special effects each has and the possible elements they can come in. Check them out below:

Pearlescent Weapons Effects

Assault Rifles
  • Dahl Bearcat – Shoots three grenades per shot. Burst fire when zoomed in. Comes in corrosive, slag, shock or fire elements.
  • Bandit Sawbar – When shot, each bullet spreads out into 3 additional bullets, forming a ‘Y’ shape. Only available in fire elemental.
Pistols
  • Jakob Unforgiven – Extremely high damage for a revolver. Does higher then average critical damage.
  • Vladof Stalker – Each bullet has the ability to bounce back. Comes in corrosive, slag, shock or fire elements.
Rocket Launchers
  • Torgue Tunguska – Fires in an arc. Upon the initial rocket landing, it’ll launch in the air again, dealing massive damage and has a very large area of effect. Explosive only.
SMGs
  • Tediore Avenger – When thrown, it bounces around like a betty grenade. Regenerates SMG ammo. Comes in corrosive, slag, shock or fire elements.
Shotguns
  • Hyperion The Butchet – Extremely high rate of fire for a shotgun. Has a chance to either not waste ammo or add ammo in the magazine while firing. Comes in corrosive, slag, shock or fire elements.
Snipers
  • Maliwan Storm – Each shot creates additional orbs that surround a target and damages them. Always shock element.

For those who have been lucky enough to find these new weapons, are you guys enjoying them? Let us know in the comment section below!

God of War: Ascension Update 1.04 Adds Elite Levels

For those of you still slaying away in the newly released God of War: Ascension multiplayer, good news awaits you. Update 1.04 addresses some key issues that were identified and diagnosed by the talented development team at Sony Santa Monica.

The biggest enhancement in update 1.04 will be the increase of the level cap. Once patch 1.04 is deployed, which is still yet to be determined, each allegiance will be upgraded from the current cap of 30 all the way to 40. To sweeten the pot even more and give you a goal to achieve, there will be brand new unlocks along the way. Introducing a new item, two new relics, and an ultimate magic for every allegiance. This should give people incentive to continue to playing the multiplayer.

Elite Levels and the specifics surrounding the aforementioned abilities will be announced closer to update 1.04’s launch.

Some audio issue bugs were also tweaked and fixed, giving players the immersive audio fidelity that God of War players have grown accustomed to hearing. Matchmaking speeds have also been optimized to help get you into the battle quicker.

The last and final mentioned fix is the shard issue that was preventing gamers from attaining the Spear of Destiny and Barbarian Hammer. Additional tuning changes have been made, namely on weapon shard drops for rare weapons, as well as unlock requirements for certain armor pieces, weapon stats and magics.

The very first DLC pack announcement is also coming very soon.

Are you happy to see these changes and fixes in God of War: Ascension? Let us know in the comments below!

Black Ops 2 Uprising DLC Releases April 16, Get Double XP April 12 – 15

Putting rumors and speculation to rest, Treyarch has unveiled the latest Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 DLC offerings in a preview trailer commentated by Treyarch senior game design director David Vonderhaar and executive producer Jason Blundell.

Check out the brand new Black Ops 2 “Uprising” DLC:

[youtube id=”jdJONV3KvW0″ width=”618″ height=”378″]

Call of Duty: Black Ops II Uprising will include four new exotic multiplayer maps, plus an exciting new Zombies experience called “Mob of the Dead” that takes players to Alcatraz with four of the actors behind some of Hollywood’s most iconic mobsters, including Ray Liotta, Chazz Palminteri, Joe Pantoliano, and Michael Madsen.

Magma

Lava carving through a modern Japanese village leaves rivers of fiery damage in its wake, providing players with dangerous terrain, compromised cover, and frenetic firefights for survival.

Encore

Set on the grounds following a bustling London music festival, the central stage provides players with a key vantage point overlooking the close-quarters battle of the surrounding amphitheater and main tents.

Vertigo

High above the clouds atop a mega skyscraper in India, players must battle across a VTOL landing pad and through the transportation terminal, bringing new dimensions of verticality to every battle.

Studio

Set on a Hollywood studio backlot, players will take cover in a wide-array of classic movie sets in this reimagined adaptation on the fan-favorite multiplayer map Firing Range.

Mob of the Dead

Call of Duty: Black Ops II Uprising’s wildly creative new “Mob of the Dead” Zombies experience finds the four prohibition-era mobsters, Billy Handsome(Liotta), Al “The Weasel” Arlington (Pantoliano), Salvatore “Sal” DeLuca (Palmentiri), and Michael “Finn” O’Leary (Madsen) serving time in Alcatraz Prison, only to discover that being behind bars is the least of their problems. With plans to break out of Alcatraz foiled by the rise of the undead, the quartet of inmates will have to lean on their mob-derived skills with firearms, blunt instruments and improvised weaponry as they battle the zombies infesting and overrunning the island. In order to survive, players must work their way through the steel cells and aging concrete buildings while fighting off a multitude of zombified prisoners and guards trapped on the island with them. Additionally, if a player becomes an unfortunate victim, “Mob of the Dead’s” new feature known as “Purgatory” sends players into the afterlife. This new twist on Zombies gameplay is ripe with its own set of objectives, and offers fans a truly new and unique experience.

Black Ops 2 Uprisng is scheduled to be released on April 16 for Xbox 360 users with the PC and PlayStation 3 users getting their hands on it at a later date.

In additional Black Ops 2 news, as mentioned in an in-game message, all players (on all platforms) can look forward a dose of Double XP starting April 12 at 10am PST and going through ’til April 15 at 10am PST to celebrate the release of Uprising.

Are you guys pumped for this DLC? What part has you most excited – new maps, a re-creation of Firing Range, or the new Mob of the Dead zombies experience? Let us know in the comment section below!

More Black Ops 2 “Uprising” DLC Promotional Material Leaked

So we’re pretty sure Call of Duty: Black Ops 2‘s next set of downloadable content is called “Uprising.”

While publishers Activision or developers Treyarch still have yet to announce any upcoming DLC, additional promotional material yet again points fingers at this Uprising DLC being what we can look forward to downloading soon.

An Uprising poster/card leaked earlier, listing the same multiplayer maps: Magma, Encore, Vertigo, Studio, as well as the zombie map Mob of the Dead. It also listed a release date of April 16, presumably for Xbox 360 players first.

Check out the newly spotted promotional material below:

Some close-ups:

Another shot of yesterday’s material:

BG4n9MDCMAAh5KI.jpg-large

Keep your sights on MP1st for the latest on Black Ops 2 DLC. We’ll be sure to update you with any official announcements from Treyarch or Activision.

For now, we can only speculate what the four new maps might entail, as well as what horrors Mob of the Dead, “Treyarch’s most terrifying Zombies experience to date,” might bring.

Any ideas?

Thanks, charlieINTEL.

“New Version” Of Doom 4 In The Works, According to Bethesda

All hands are on deck when it comes to the development of a new version of Doom 4.

Developers at id Software, after poor sales of 2011’s Rage and with the recent cancellation of Rage 2, are now setting their focus on the development of Doom 4 for the next-generation of gaming.

Speaking to Kotaku, publishers Bethesda confirmed the development of a “new version” of Doom 4, one that “promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise.”

Initial development of the title was “indefinitely” postponed back in October 2011.

Bethesda marketing boss Pete Hines said in a new statement, “An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect.” Although the game now seems to be on track, sources claim that development was “not going well.”

“As a result, id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4.” No release timeframe has been given, though Hines made it clear, “When we’re ready to talk about the Doom 4 id is making, we will let folks know.”

Doom 4 on next-generation consoles may be a long way off still, but who’s excited nevertheless?

Disney Shuts Down LucasArts – The End of Star Wars: 1313, First Assault and Battlefront 3?

While the licensing name still exists, the studio of LucasArts, recently merged with Disney, is no more.

Kotaku reports that “Disney has laid off the staff of LucasArts and cancelled all current projects” earlier today, halting production on games like Star Wars: 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault.

LucasArts has issues the following statement:

After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.

What does this mean for games like Star Wars: 1313, Star Wars: First Assault, and potentially, Star Wars: Battlefront 3? Unless any of these titles are licensed to a different developer, which would most likely result in a different game entirely, you can kiss your hopes and dreams of more mature Star Wars game, and an epic online multiplayer Star Wars FPS goodbye.

Star Wars: 1313 was set to be a more mature-themed Star Wars game that allowed you to explore the slums of Coruscant’s deepest and darkest regions as a badass bounty hunter. Meanwhile, leaked images and info of Star Wars: First Assault described the game as a downloadable first-person shooter set in the Star Wars universe and also as a ‘predecessor’ to Star Wars: Battlefront 3.

Its sad to see a studio like LucasArts go and we wish all former employees the best. Maybe they can all band together to “Kickstart” the ultimate Star Wars game? We can only hope.

What are your thoughts on the loss of LucasArts?

Play Defiance Now and Check Out The Launch Trailer

Trion World’s open-world action-shooter Defiance is, at last, out of beta testing and into the wild, now playable on the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Defiance lets you explore an alien-infested San Francisco Bay Area as an Ark Hunter, gathering highly sought-after alien technology and taking out anything that stands in your way. Best of all, you can easily join up with your friends, or battle against them in Defiance’s gigantic open-world, ripe with opportunities to adventure and explore.

To learn more about Defiance, check out the official website and have a peek at the launch trailer below.

[youtube id=”5tkGml5V5Ys” width=”618″ height=”378″]

As with any launch of an MMO/Open-Work game like Defiance, things will seem a tad shaky at first. Trion Worlds has posted a number of issues they are currently looking into to make your journey as smooth and fulfilling as possible.

Trion Worlds writes in a recent blog entry, “This first day of launch of Defiance, a PC-PS3-XBOX360-massively-online-tv-show-connected-third-person-open-world-shooter, has been as awesome as we expected it to be. And by awesome, I mean we’re neck deep addressing all the issues that come up when you scale something up to a million people from a test environment of thousands.”

  • Connectivity – Being able to connect, patch and play. This has a number of things that can be plaguing you depending on platform and what version of the game you have. We’re on it like a shark during winter solstice.
  • Pre-order items – WHERE ARE THEY?!?!? We have a number of cases where they aren’t being delivered to you. We know. They haven’t disappeared nor will they. They might pop up suddenly over the next hours, the next time you log on or tomorrow.
  • Bosses and Arkfalls – They might be very difficult as they scale and the rewards not in any sane correlation to what they should be, being this difficult. You’re right, it’s not right. On it.
  • Chat and VOIP – This isn’t broken, we just believe people should use their psychic abilities more. Can you hear what I’m saying to you right now? Yes, exactly. We’re working on it.

To keep up-to-date on server outages or updates, we also recommend following @DefianceGame on Twitter.

How has your Ark hunting experience been so far? Any thoughts on the game you’d like to share?

If you’re trying to obtain these new weapons, it seems that the new Legendary Loot Midgets have the best chance to drop them, who can only be found in the Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, available to everyone for free. In addition to dropping these Pearlescent weapons, Legendary Loot Midgets also have a chance to drop the new E-tech relics, as well as various orange tier loot.

As an added bonus, the good folks over at Gearbox have also recently released new shift codes that’ll be active for awhile in-order to help out people in need of new loot as they make their way to the new level cap.

  • Xbox 360: KBWTB-T6XSC-JJHBF-WXBJJ-WRWKF

Next-Gen Engine Talk – They Look Good, But How Do They Play?

This past few weeks have been rife with new info regarding next-gen consoles, engines, upcoming games, and a handful of other great bits of news.  Unfortunately, the internet has managed to turn nuggets of information into a goldmine of hearsay yet again, namely in regards to Activision’s next major gaming engine and EA’s Frostbite 3.  While a lot of great information has come of people scouring patent filings and press releases, most of the talk about the upcoming engines from the big two is as useful as whitenoise.

Obviously, we know Frostbite 3 will be the engine that powers Battlefield 4, but what about Activision’s engine?  Will Call of Duty run on it?  What about other Activision titles?  I think it’s a given that the next-gen CODs will be running on the new engine, but that doesn’t mean we’ll be getting the kind of animations the Activision/Nividia demos showcased though, so don’t expect the next or next-gen COD to look like a Pixar movie.

So, what’s the point of this article?

The point is that we’re still at least 6 months away from the release of BF4, 7 months away from the next COD, and at least a few weeks if not a couple of months from seeing multiplayer gameplay from either title.  Speculation is fine, but a big part of the misinformation being spread about new consoles, games, engines, and hardware comes from news sources using speculation as fact.  So, in the interest of honesty and integrity in reporting, I present the facts:

Frostbite 3

  • Better cross-platform support (changes to the PC version won’t be as dramatic in FB3 as they were in FB2 relative to a console version of the same change)
  • Support for higher-resolution textures (environments and anything with a “surface” will look more detailed)
  • Support for more complicated and dynamic lighting effects (more “real” looking lighting with more intricate effects)
  • Better destruction (things will get blown-the-f-up “better”)
  • Improved animation flexibility (FB2 uses the EA-developed ANT animation system used in their sports titles like FIFA)
  • Enhanced physics (objects will interact more realistically and particles will have more dynamic behavior)

Source: Pixel Enemy.

Activision’s Next Major Engine

  • Can use high-resolution scans of people to create very realistic textures for facial animations
  • The animation demo Activision did was running at 180FPS on a GTX 680 (a medium-highend GPU capable of running most current-gen games on high-ultra at roughly 50-60FPS)
  • Nividia also released a tech demo showing the same animation technology running on their new Titan GPU:

Notice that I didn’t mention anything about Call of Duty or how Battlefield 4’s multiplayer will play.  You know why?  Because we have almost no idea based on the information above.  As it stands, what we do know is that games running on these engines will look great on medium-to-high-end PC hardware and probably not too shabby on next-gen consoles.

The biggest question for me though is how well the games running on these new engines will run, and I don’t mean graphically.  As long as it’s getting at least 60FPS on medium-end hardware on high settings, I don’t care what the game looks like (unless it’s ugly, then GTFO).  What I want to know and what none of the demos have shown is how the games really play.  Yeah, 17 minutes of in-game Battlefield 4 footage might sound like it offers a lot, but that reveal was really more like 10 minutes of visual demonstrations of what the gameplay looks like. (Notice all those explosions?) The remaining 7 minutes was split up between cut scenes, title cards, and characters walking around.

The bigger point though is that I haven’t bought a COD or BF game for the single player experience in, well, ever.  Until DICE or Activision release MP game footage, I don’t care how good their games look, how many birds they can put on screen, or whether or not Ghost will be rising from the dead as Soap’s zombie sidekick.  After all, there have been plenty of games that looked great in SP but played terribly in MP. (Crysis 2 anyone? Crysis 3 is probably the biggest about-face I’ve ever seen in terms of playability improvement over the previous title, btw.)  The core experience of these games is the multiplayer because, lets face it, military FPS games have about as much story potential in the hands of EA and Activision as an egg has the chance of surviving a nuclear explosion.

When EA or Activision show me why I should buy their games, then we’ll talk about how good they might be.

In closing, I’d like to say that anyone you hear or read talking about the features of these engines aside from developers actually involved in their creation beyond what’s listed above is most likely entirely speculation.  You’ll be much better off saving your pre-order money for a couple months if you’re on the fence about what games or consoles to buy this holiday season.

Thank you for reading.

PlayStation Plus Subscribers Prepare To Die With Demon’s Souls

Dark Souls 2 may be a ways out from release, so to help make the wait bearable, Sony is now offering PS+ subscribers the original Demon’s Souls, the game that started it all, for absolutely free.

[youtube id=”FRnIyXvonAU” width=”618″ height=”378″]

“Envelop yourself in the Kingdom of Boletaria, a dark land devastated by the cruel fog that brings demons to feast on mortal souls. Vanquish monstrous demons in unforgiving combat and collect their souls to grow your own power. Progress through a non-linear world exploring ancient castles, deep caves and dark tunnels littered with deadly traps. To succeed you will need to adapt your character, your equipment and your tactics to every unpredictable situation.”

Demon’s Souls features a 3 player co-op RPG experience. The game had originally planned to shut it’s servers down late 2011, but was pushed to stay up until May 2012. Surprisingly, the team decided to keep them up and running with no actual shut-down date due to fans’ support.
