Battlefield 4 – DICE is ‘Very Interested’ in eSports

Though Battlefield 4 multiplayer details are still scarce, DICE is showing interest in the eSports scene looking into ways they can integrate it into their upcoming blockbuster FPS, releasing this fall.

In fact, general manager Karl-Magnus Troedsson recently told YouTube personality Luetin09 that his teams is “very interested” in adding eSports functionality to Battlefield 4.

“…yes, we’re very interested in this area, and we’re definitely going to see what we can do there,” said Troedsson during a video interview. “I can’t talk about the specifics because we’re not announcing them, but I can say that e-sports is an area that we are very interested in.”

Troedsson went on to say that integrating eSports functionality into a game like Battlefield 4 is “not as easy as some game developers like to think, that it’s just you do ‘x, y and z’ and everything is done – it’s actually much bigger than that now.”

There are some people that actually see this as a new phenomena, and that’s not true either. For the people that have been involved in this scene it’s been around for a long time. It’s just recently that it’s really started to take off more in semi-mainstream, online media etc. which is amazingly cool by the way.”

More recently, developers Treyarch took a similar approach to Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and are now holding one of the biggest eSports competition in the world this week.

Would you like to see something similar make its way to Battlefield 4? Let us know in the comments how (or even if) you’d like to see eSports integrated into Battlefield 4!

If you missed it, be sure to catch the latest Battlefield 4 trailer as well as 17-minutes of in-game footage.

DayZ Standalone Console Port Almost “Certain”, Arma 3 Alpha Lite Giveaway and Videos

The chances of a console release for DayZ keeps on growing and growing, that is if the team doesn’t “f**k up” the PC Standalone release, according to creator Dean “Rocket” Hall.

Speaking to IGN, Dean spoke further about the idea of DayZ hitting consoles once the PC version has released.

“Certainly I think if we don’t, for want of a better word ‘fuck up,’ the PC release then I would say a console port is almost certain,” Hall said. “I know a lot of people get really hot and bothered about it. Like, I’m not a console gamer, I’m a PC gamer, but I don’t think it necessarily has to hurt things.”

While no platform has been revealed, it’s most likely heading towards next-gen consoles, more specifically, the PlayStation 4. Dean stated that he has already discussed things with Sony and while he can’t reveal the concrete details, he did say that they are “interested” in the project.

“I know a lot of people get really hot and bothered about it. Like, I’m not a console gamer, I’m a PC gamer, but I don’t think it necessarily has to hurt things.”

“It appears to be the kind of game that Sony are interested in, I think we just have to wait and see,” he said. “We’ve talked and met with Sony, and they’re very – you know, they’re obviously interested.”

On the subject of Arma-related games, there are some new community videos available to watch. Rumor – Black Ops 2 “Uprising” DLC Promotional Material Leaked, Releases April 16

Hints of Black Ops 2‘s second set of downloadable content surfaced last week, suggesting the latest multiplayer expansion to be called “Uprising” and to include “Treyarch’s most terrifying Zombies experience to date.”

Promotional material spotted earlier today suggests these rumors to be true. According to the card shown below, Black Ops 2’s Uprising DLC will include four new multiplayer maps; Vertigo, Magma, Encore and Studio, as well as another addition to the Zombie mode; Mob of the Dead.

BG1Kl4UCAAAZwhE

Thanks, Jay Gautreau.

Though the card looks pretty real to us and does corroborate with earlier reports, we’re still considering it a rumor until officially announced by developers Treyarch or publishers Activision.

If it is the real deal, we can presume that Xbox 360 users will have access to the DLC on April 16, according to the card – one month later for PS3 and PC users.

What seems out of place, however, is the lack of mention of either a new weapon or zombie mode, items that came included in Black Ops 2’s previous DLC, Revolution. Compare the image to Revolution’s promotional material which did include mention of a DLC weapon. Then again, perhaps “Mob of the Dead” will include additional content not listed on the promotional card.

“Battlefield is No Longer a Multiplayer-Only Game” – DICE To Limit Battlefield 4’s Multiplayer Development

EA’s and DICE’s recent reveal of Battlefield 4 left many fans wanting more of this Fall’s next big FPS blockbuster.

Last March 27, Digital Illusions CE showed off 17 minutes of Battlefield 4 single player gameplay, highlighting some of the Frostbite 3 engine’s powerful visual improvements, as well as the more human, dramatic, and believable elements of Battlefield 4’s single player experience.

‘But where is the multiplayer?’ asked millions of avid Battlefield fans.

Eurogamer recently asked DICE executive producer Patrick Bach this very same question, who answered, “We see single-player as a very important part of Battlefield nowadays. We had a lot of people playing single-player. Not everyone finished it, but not everyone finishes the best single-player only games either, which is a bit sad.”

Though it may not seem like it, Bach is sure that “there are a lot of people who are really happy we are building the single-player. They don’t even dare to say it out loud, because all their friends will mock them. But Battlefield is no longer a multiplayer-only game.”

With these statements in mind, we recently had the chance to speak to lead core gameplay designer on Battlefield 4, Allen Curts, where we asked if this shift in philosophy would, in any way, effect the multiplayer experience of Battlefield 4.

‘Absolutely,’ said Curts. ‘FPS games these days aren’t just about mindlessly shooting random people on the other side of the world. They’re about story, emotion, and feeling an attachment to the sorts of things these soldiers in the single player campaign go through.’

‘That means that, yes, we will be shifting focus to Battlefield 4’s single player experience over the period of development leading up to release.’

We asked what exactly that meant for the multiplayer. ‘Well, for one, we’ll simply be limiting the amount of content, like game modes and maps, for example,’ Curts responded.

‘We’re going to stick to the more popular modes like Team Deathmatch and only include roughly four small- to medium-sized maps. Battlefield 3’s telementary data has shown TDM to be the most popular game mode on only a select few maps like Operation Metro, for example. So, we asked ourselves ‘why give Battlefield fans more of what they don’t want? Let’s give them more TDM on maps like Op Metro.’ This will also allow us to put more of our resources towards the single player campaign.’

We then asked if the team thought this might upset any Battlefield fans. ‘No way,’ said Curts, confidently. ‘Our true, core Battlefield fans want more single player, so that’s what we’re giving them.’

Agree?

Update

Speaking of patches, Gearbox community manager, Chris F. has recently revealed that the bank glitch on Borderlands 2, which allowed people to store more loot then intended in their bank storage, will be looked at and addressed with a future update. It was not included in this one due to it being a stability/technical issue.

In additional Borderlands 2 news, Telltale games are releasing Poker Night 2 for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 later this month and will be featuring our favorite Hyperion robot, Clap-Trap who is making a special guest appearance. You’ll also be able to earn some exclusive Borderlands 2 skins and heads for you vault hunters by playing, as well as new themes/props for your platform of choice.

Thankfully, you won’t have to wonder what exactly these mentioned character customization items look like. Check out the pic below.

PS3 Exclusive Journey Gets Rocket Death Match DLC, Probably Never Releasing

Journey was an excellent PS3 title, and in fact, was even a nominee for our Multiplayer Experience of 2012.

While the co-op is one of the best, more emotional experiences to date, there was always that competitive component missing from the game. Fear not, though. Today, ThatGameCompany released a teaser for an upcoming Journey DLC called “Rocket Death Match”.

Throughout the panel, writer and design director Joseph S. and art director Christopher B. share Bungie’s world buildlng techniques and describe the core pillars that Destiny is built on: a world that is hopeful and inviting, an idealized reality, filled with mystery and adventure, and a place where you can become a legend.

What exactly do those pillars mean for a next-generation game like Destiny? Find out in the video presentation below, courtesy of GameSpot.

Destiny will release on current and next-generation platforms, including the PlayStation 4, sometime in 2014.

Battlefield 4 Rumored For an October 29, 2013 Release Date on the Xbox 360

As was the case with 2011’s Battlefield 3, it looks like we can potentially expect a similar, end-of-October release date for DICE’s upcoming blockbuster FPS Battlefield 4.

The official Xbox Blog indicates an October 29, 2013 release date for Battlefield 4 on the Xbox 360. It reads:

Only in Battlefield can players go through a building instead of around it, eject from a jet and take out the enemy mid-free fall, or flip a tank. DICE, a studio of Electronic Arts, announced that Battlefield 4 will arrive on the Xbox 360 on October 29, 2013.

As of yet, DICE and EA have not officially confirmed a release date for Battlefield 4 on any platform other than the window of Fall, 2013, shortly after the game’s beta releasing earlier that season.

We’ve sent word to EA for clarification, but meanwhile, we can examine the legitimacy of Battlefield 4’s alleged release date on the Xbox 360.

Should it prove sincere, this date would likely apply to both the PlayStation 3 and PC versions of the game as well. Any news of a next-gen release for Battlefield 4 would likely come at a later date.

What the rumor does have going for it, however, is that October 29 does fall on a Tuesday, similar to most video game releases, and that Battlefield 3 released near the end of the same month on the 28th in 2011, a typical release time frame for most AAA shooters.

We’ll be sure to update you with anything we learn regarding Battlefield 4’s release date. Meanwhile, check out our recap of the game’s official unveiling in San Francisco!

Update 1

The blog has been edited to exclude Battlefield 4’s alleged release date and now reads, “DICE, a studio of Electronic Arts, announced that Battlefield 4 is coming to the Xbox 360.”

It’s unclear whether the original posting was a mistake, or if the release date was simply was not yet meant to be known, thus removed.

Update 2

EA has kindly responded to our inquiry, simply stating, “we have not announced a ship date for Battlefield 4. Stay tuned to Battlefield.com for the official release date when it is announced.”

Thanks, Ruben Santana.

Destiny – Bungie Video Presentation On Character Design

Halo creators Bungie want to create “brave new worlds” with their upcoming, shared action FPS Destiny.

During a recent panel presentation at GDC 2013, Bungie showed fans that one way to achieve this is through character development.

Throughout the presentation, writer and design director Joseph S. and art director Christopher B. revealed the various sci-fi and fantasy elements that the team used for inspiration for enemies like the Vex, Fallen, Cabal, Hive and Titan, as well as for the hero classes like the Titan, Hunter and Warlock.

Countless ideas and pieces of concept art were cycled through to land on the models seen in the presentation, and Bungie wants to share that process with you in this quick behind-the-scenes video.

[youtube id=”bOcioqwN2Hc” width=”618″ height=”378″]

Not mentioned in the video were some of the key characteristics of each of the three playable classes in Destiny. For example, the heavily armored Titan can be distinguished on the battlefield by its distinct V-shape, utilizing 80% armor and 20% cloth. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Warlock’s long robes create an upside-down V-shape and is made up of 20% armor and 80% cloth. Sitting in the middle, the Hunter wears 50% of both armor and cloth and is distinguished by its unique hood and use of improvised technology.

More was also shown, including some of the playable races like the Humans, the mysterious and alien Awoken, and the mechanical and sinister Exo. Sadly, the “Tiger Man” didn’t make it into production.

Stay tuned to MP1st as we learn more about Destiny!

These Five Hi-Res Battlefield 4 Screens Are Pretty

Battlefield 4, powered by the Frostbite 3 engine, is coming Fall 2013 and developers DICE wants you to see how pretty it looks.

As mentioned in our recap of the Battlefield 4 reveal in San Francisco, Frostbite 3 delivers gorgeous visuals, vivid colors and impressively large environments, but that’s not the only thing Battlefield 4 developers want you to take away from the game’s initial presentation. According to DICE, it’s those human, dramatic and believable moments that make up the DNA of Battlefield 4.

To help convey that message, DICE and EA want you to gawk at these pretty, hi-res Battlefield 4 screens taken in-game. You might not shed any tears, nor might their level of realism startle you, but they’re still pretty damn impressive.

Enjoy the screens below and remember, you can also catch some Battlefield 4 footage, including the first trailer and 17-minutes of gameplay, right here.

And yes, the guy in the first screen does look like Mat LeBlanc, known for his role as Joey Tribbiani in Friends.

Does the Future of Call of Duty Look Like This? Activision Unveils Next-Gen Character Rendering

During a recent presentation at this year’s Game Developers Conference, Activision technical director Jorge Jimenez took the stage to unveil and demonstrate the company’s “Next-Generation Character Rendering” technology which, while unlikely to be seen in a Call of Duty near you, is rather impressive nonetheless.

As you can see in the video demonstration and slides below, these photorealistic, digitally created characters display true to life facial expressions and emotions while running at 180 frames per seconds using a Geforce GTX 680.

“For us, the challenge goes beyond entertaining,” said Jimenez. “It’s more about creating a medium for better expressing emotions, and reaching the feelings of the players.”

See for yourself in the video presentation below.

[youtube id=”l6R6N4Vy0nE” width=”618″ height=”378″]

As per the video’s description, “this animated character is being rendered in real-time on current video card hardware, using standard bone animation. The original high resolution data was acquired from Light Stage Facial Scanning and Performance Capture by USC Institute for Creative Technologies, then converted to a 70 bones rig, while preserving the high frequency detail in diffuse, normal and displacement composite maps. It is being rendered in a DirectX11 environment, using advanced techniques to faithfully represent the character’s skin and eyes.”

Though not yet actual gameplay, it’s interesting to see where Activision’s latest tech will take them and whether or not we’ll be seeing high-fidelity characters such as these in a game like Call of Duty any time soon. We can only hope.

In addition, check out the gallery below for some more scary real screens.

Battlefield 4 Marketing Reveals The “Drone Strike Expansion Pack” Pre-Order Bonus [Updated]

Additional Battlefield 4 marketing material has been spotted, revealing the “Drone Strike Expansion Pack,” available to those who pre-order Battlefield 4.

Previously, along with the unveiling of Battlefield 4 and it’s release time frame of Fall 2013, DICE and EA also announced the “Premium Expansion Pack” as a Battlefield 4 pre-order bonus.

No information as to what type of content the Premium DLC might include was given and it’s unclear if the Drone Strike Expansion Pack is an entirely new set of second DLC, or an alternative name for the aforementioned Premium Expansion Pack, which is a fairly vague name to begin with.

Take a look at the poster below, announcing the “Drone Strike Expansion Pack” for Battlefield 4.

Update

DICE has confirmed that “Drone Strike” is, in fact, the working title for the previously mentioned Premium expansion pack awarded to those who pre-order Battlefield 4.
