BF3 Close Quarters Focuses On HD Destruction Without The Distractions, Tweaks to Grenades, RPGs, C4 and Claymores

Senior VFX Artist at DICE Nadab Göksu gives Battlefield 3 fans a sneak peak at the type of work that went into creating the beautiful HD destruction that will be causing quite the mess in the upcoming Close Quarters DLC. To see some of it in action, make sure to check out the latest “Donya Fortress” gameplay trailer from DICE.

Having worked with DICE since the Battlefield 2 in 2005, Nadab Göksu explains in the latest issue of Inside DICE his roles which include “everything from creating particle effects to post filters, lens flares, and bullet decals.” He also makes sure to “hook stuff up to the right gameplay effect — so there’s a metal kind of explosion (and not a wooden one) when you fire your RPG at a vehicle, for example.”

Having worked extensively on the upcoming Close Quarters DLC, Göksu details his focus on bringing intense, HD destruction to the forefront of this particular battlefield, but without the potential distractions that could hinder Battlefield 3’s gameplay. Göksu explains that “particle effects should not block a player’s view. We have a lot more destruction than in previous games, so if we were to use the set of FX from the base game, the rooms and corridors in Close Quarters would be literally filled with smoke for long periods of time, potentially ruining the gameplay.” He adds that “the focus here should be on debris rather than smoke,” and that this can be achieved by “having a lot of debris and very violent dust explosions that burst and dissipate quickly so that they don’t take over the scene.”

Battlefield 3 fans can also expect highly detailed environments with a lot going on in the background. Göksu lists as few examples seen on the map “Skybar,” DICE’s internal title for Ziba Tower (check out the trailer here): “you have the sprinklers that will trigger if someone shoots at them or if an explosion goes off nearby. We also have gas stoves that burst into flames during the entire round. Showers start to leak water and steam, TV’s are buzzing with static, lights are flashing, and so on.” These “chaotic elements” are sure to add to the fast-paced and action-packed feel of close quarter combat, giving players that extra sense of immersion.

Göksu stresses that with the amount of destruction and chaos going on, “put simply, at the end of a round, a Close Quarters map should look and feel completely different from when the round started.” That is, if you’re doing it right.

He also stated that fans can expect much better impact effects from bullets in Close Quartes thanks to some new optimization techniques. This also applies to destruction effects which will now react differently to different types of materials such as wood, furniture, concrete, marble and so on. RPG explosions have also been made to look unique in order to be differentiated more easily from grenade explosions (which have also seen some tweaks in Close Quarters). Additionally, the C4 explosion radius has also been adjusted as has the Claymore to better suit the smaller, compact map design of Close Quarters.

Below is a demo montage demonstrating the chaotic effects of randomly shooting stuff in Close Quarters:

Are you looking forward to some close quarters battles and HD destruction?

Battlefield 3 PC Double XP Weekend Begins May 26th, How Double XP is Calculated

DICE has confirmed that Battlefield 3 PC players will get their double XP fix this weekend.

After running into technical difficulties on PC when the very first Battlefield 3 double XP weekend kicked off, the studio had to push back the event on the platform for two weeks. Now, the issues seem to be ironed out and DICE is making good on their promise. The event has been confirmed to take place this weekend, May 26-27, according to DICE’s Tommy Rydling on the Battlelog.

Starts Saturday 26th May

  • 00:01 PDT
  • 03:01 EST
  • 07:01 UTC
  • 09:01 CET

Ends Sunday 27th May

  • 23:59 PDT
  • 02:59 EST (Monday 28th)
  • 06:59 UTC (Monday 28th)
  • 08:59 CET (Monday 28th)

Also, Daniel Matros took to the forums to explain how Double XP will be calculated. Here’s the scoring sequence at the end of a match:

  • Original End of Round Score: 200 (2 kills)
  • Engineer Score: 400 (200 original points + 200 for Double XP)
  • Squad Rush Ribbon: 200
  • MVP Ribbon: 400
  • Additional Score: 600 (Your ribbon score once more (200+400)x2)
  • Total: (200×2)+(200+400)x2=1600 points instead of the 800 you would receive on any other day.

Mass Effect 3: Rebellion Pack is Real, Free and Dropping Soon

While rumors of an upcoming Mass Effect 3 multiplayer DLC titled Rebellion were recently deemed “not true” by BioWare, it appears that they were only referring to certain details as BioWare confirms today that Mass Effect 3: Rebellion Pack is, indeed, real.

Most of the details reported earlier were, in fact, correct, save for the name of a particular class that will be playable in the upcoming DLC.

As stated earlier, two new maps (Firebase Jade set in a Salarian-made jungle reservoir, and Firebase Goddess set on the Asari homeworld of Thessia) will be available for immediate play in the map selection. In-game reinforcement packs will include three new weapons (the Reegar Carbine Shotgun, Krysae Sniper Rifle and the Cerberus Harrier Assault Rifle) as well as additional equipment, consumables and six new playable classes.

The new races and classes as listed on the Official BioWare Blog:

Vorcha Soldier

  • Thanks to their unique physiology and their Bloodlust ability, the Vorcha are joining the fight and are perfectly suited for the utilitarian soldier kit.

Vorcha Sentinel

  • The innate aggressiveness found within the Vorcha make them shockingly durable combatants, and when coupled with their Flamer skill, the Vorcha sentinel is a force to be reckoned with.

Male Quarian Engineer

  • Quarians have spent centuries at perpetual salvage and ship repair; the survival of their species depends on this technical expertise. When bringing the new Arc Grenade to the fray, the Quarians prove their prowess as effective engineers on the battlefield.

Male Quarian Infiltrator

  • The Male Quarian Infiltrator must actively rely on stealth while in the heat of battle, and when they make use of their Tactical Scan ability, they quickly prove their mettle while continuously dishing out the pain.

Ex-Cerberus Vanguard

  • When the Illusive Man turned to indoctrination in order to ensure the loyalty of his troops, many Cerberus operatives defected and joined the Alliance in order to stop the Reapers. Now that we’re on the same team, Ex-Cerberus Vanguards (along with their new Lash attack) are quickly proving their worth.

Ex-Cerberus Adept

  • A result of the Illusive Man’s early experiments in enhanced human physiology, Ex-Cerberus subjects are highly skilled combat and biotics specialists. As a result, Ex-Cerberus Adepts can lay waste to the enemy with their Smash and Singularity powers.

Mass Effect 3: Rebellion Pack will be available on Xbox Live, the PlayStation Network and PC this Tuesday, May 29th (Wednesday, May 30 on the PSN in Europe). Much to the pleasure of all ME fans, the Rebellion Pack will be available at no extra cost for anyone who has redeemed an online pass on any of the platforms.

Remember, Operation: Shieldwall begins this weekend! What new class are you dying to try out in Rebellion? Let us know in the comments below.

With BioWare’s last N7 Bounty Weekend challenge Operation: Silencer ending in failure, they are giving ME3-heads another chance in this weekend’s Operation: Shieldwall, but not without its consequences.

Diablo III Terrorizes Day-One PC Sales Records

Diablo may be evil as evil can get, but he still somehow manages to maintain a certain level of popularity among the PC crowd. Could it be his charm or, perhaps, his dashing good looks? Either way, Diabo III manages to smash day-one sales records on PC.

Within 24 hours of its release, Diablo III has sold over 3.5 million copies on PC. However, that doesn’t include players who got the game as part of the World of Warcraft annual pass. That puts numbers at 4.7 million players in just the first day.

If we’re talking weeks here, Diablo II has sold over 6.3 million copies within the first week of release.

Blizzard founder and CEO Mike Morhaime had this to say on the matter:

Regarding today’s announcement, we recognize that setting a new launch record is a big achievement. However, we’re especially proud of the gameplay feedback we’ve received from players worldwide. We’re pleased that Diablo III has lived up to players’ high expectations, and we’re looking forward to welcoming more players into Sanctuary in the days ahead.

What have been your impressions of Diablo III so far? Let us know in the comments below!

Black Ops II – Weapons Are “Balanced From The Ground Up,” More on Map Design and Social Integration

Treyarch Studio Head Mark Lamia discusses Black Ops II multiplayer, including how maps are conceptualized, Treyarch’s interest in the social aspects of multiplayer, and most importantly, weapon balance.

“We really enjoy creating distinct, unique locations,” Mark Lamia tells Now Gamer. Many Treyarch fans might not know that story and background play a large role when it comes to the conceptualization of multiplayer maps within the Treyarch studio. Lamia discusses further, “we have a story for each of these locations that we come up with. Whether or not the player knows it, that’s part of our conceptual process when coming up with our maps.”

This also carries over to locations within the maps as well. Lamia explains, “we place a lot of emphasis on wanting to have distinct locations within a map so that, as much as possible, you could say where you’re at.” This greatly benefits players who use “call-outs” while playing with others in Call of Duty’s multiplayer.” We think that not only is that artistically interesting for us, but also from a gameplay point of view, there’s a real nice benefit to having that,” Lamia adds. Fans can also expect much more life-like maps thanks to the many engine upgrades and new lighting techniques that Treyarch will be implementing.

Treyarch took a giant leap forward in the original Black Ops when they introduced Theater Mode to the Call of Duty franchise. Lamia states that it played a large role in adding a unique and creative element to Call of Duty’s multiplayer, something that he explains we can expect more of in Black Ops II. “We also like that there is a creative element inside of Black Ops,” says Lamia when referring to the introduction of Player Cards, Theater Mode and other tools that allow players to “show off in unique and interesting ways.” He added, “It has this unique social implication but also just in terms of being able to share the experience with other people.”

Again, we can most likely expect further improvements to the Theater Mode and Elite Integration in Black Ops II, something Lamia touched on earlier here.

“Weapon balance is critical” explains Lamia. “With Black Ops’ multiplayer, there was a certain balance of gunplay and gameplay that we wanted to strike,” which for the most part, many would argue the team got right, minus a few odd weapons like the FAMAS, for example. Generally, Black Ops was praised as one of the more balanced titles in the later half of Call of Duty’s history. Lamia stresses, “we really enjoyed the gunfight that occurs,” and it seems to have showed.

When it comes to Black Ops II, Lamia reveals that players can expect a brand new weapon balance system built from the ground up which falls in line with Treyarch’s general multiplayer philosophy this time around. Earlier, Treyarch noted that Black Ops II’s multiplayer will be “stripped back to the core” and that they will be “challenging some long held assumptions.” Lamia adds, “I think our weapons and our balance are going to be unique to Black Ops II. Any conception you have about any weapons in the Call of Duty franchise, you set aside when you’re playing Black Ops II. It’s being balanced from the ground up for this game that we’re creating.”

What sort of things are you most looking forward to in Black Ops II’s multiplayer? Better maps, new engine upgrades, improved Theater Mode/Elite or the revamped weapon balance system? Let us know in the comments below!

Danger Close Addressed “a Lot of Things” with Warfighter Through MoH Feedback, Especially the Multiplayer

Danger Close’s creative director, Rich Farrelly, touches on Medal of Honor 2010’s critical reception, and emphasizes the importance of feedback that the studio has received over the last couple of years in shaping MoH: Warfighter.

“The Metacritic rating was a lot lower than what we would’ve liked,” reckoned Farrelly. “I’m gonna save my comments on what I think about that site! But you know what? It was the best-selling Medal of Honor ever. It came up on 6 million units sold. No one ever mentions that. We’re really proud of that,” he told Games On Net.

Farrelly continued, “I think there was a really high bar of expectation set for us, and maybe we didn’t meet certain aspects of that. The single-player campaign had its issues, but overall I think it stands on its own two feet – and we’ve definitely been listening to the feedback over the past few years, and we’ve been addressing a lot of things.”

The multiplayer component of Medal of Honor 2010 wasn’t perceived to be solid enough to sway players from the likes of Bad Company 2 and Treyarch’s Black Ops. So, when Farrelly was asked if the multiplayer is among what the team at Danger Close is addressing, he stated “especially that [the multiplayer]. This time, we’re developing that in-house.”

Medal of Honor: Warfighter releases on October 23rd in the US, 26th in the UK.

Battlefield 3: Close Quarters Will Not Cost $30 According to Fact Sheet

If you’ve been keeping up with the Battlefield 3 rumors lately, you’ll most likely have heard about the $30 price tag that was recently said to be slapped on DICE’s upcoming Battlefield 3: Close Quarters DLC.

This all began when Gamefanshop.com listed Close Quarters at $29.99, most likely by mistake. This, of course, alerted much of the BF3 community as most expansion packs from DICE have typically been released at the $15 price range, including the latest Back to Karkand DLC, and before that, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam.

However, according to a Close Quarters fact sheet brought to our attention by reader Rubén Santana (thanks, Rubén), EA officially lists the following information about Close Quarters:

  • Publisher: Electronic Arts
  • Developer: DICE
  • Formats: PlayStation® 3, Xbox 360®, PC
  • Release: June 2012 (1 week early access on PlayStation®3)
  • Players: 2-16
  • Rating: ESRB Mature 17+ / PEGI 16
  • MSRP: $14.99 USD for PlayStation 3 and PC, 1200 MS Points

That’s more like it, right? It looks like Battlefield 3 fans can rest easy, for now.

Also, remember that though you can buy the individual expansion pack separately, DICE will most likely be giving fans the opportunity to save a bit of cash with the rumored Battlefield Premium service, said to pack in a number of expansions and other content.

  • The radar will no longer display an ‘X’ for dying players when they are not within sight of the player or player’s teammate.

  • Fixed several UI related crash issues.
  • Third party map and _SE map names no longer display in the scoreboard with the #SFUI_MAP_ localization token.

In case you missed it, earlier this month SDK was added to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
