Treyarch Dev Teases Black Ops II Multiplayer HUD and Custom Games Settings, Debunks Old Rumor

David Vonderhaar of Treyarch talks about the new multiplayer HUD for Call of Duty: Black Ops II as the team tries to strike a balance between a great art style and readability and teases some upcoming intel.

“So fired up right now,” tweeted Vonderhaar recently. “UI team put together an MP HUD visual design. Clean with high readability/usability but maintains great looking art.” He added that “the boys [have] been working so hard to find the balance between beautiful and high usability. I shed tears of joy in the meeting.”

If you’re dying to know what exactly the HUD will look like (which we certainly are), Vonderhaar also teased a tease that we may be treated to in the near future, stating, “I predict a day in near future where Call of Duty Facebook ‘leaks’ an example of new icon style.” Additionally, you can take a look at this leaked image that show what the HUD could potentially look like. If it is real, you can most likely expect some updates to have taken place since then.

Vonderhaar also revealed that the Custom Games setting will allow for further options than in previous Call of Duty titles. When asked if it will be possible to take off third-person spectating from private matches so people can’t use it to assist others, Vonderhaar replied, “can’t get into details right now but doing a lot of work for Custom Games to give you more control of spectating behavior and rules.”

Lastly, when referenced to an older Black Ops II multiplayer rumor including game modes and perks which we reported on here, Vonderhaar confirmed the rumors to be fake, stating, “I don’t use 3rd party sites to give info out. Ever.”

Though, we have recently learned that Treyarch plans to build Black Ops II’s multiplayer from the ground up.

Were there any particular improvements you would like to have seen made to the HUD or Custom Games settings in the original Black Ops?

[Updated] Bizzarre Halo 4 Multiplayer Leak

Yesterday, Sunday the 27th, one of the strangest leaks in video game history appeared on the internet.

Yes, it’s of Halo 4 and, yes, it’s of multiplayer, which many hardcore Halo fans are most looking forward to, but the way in which it is presented is some of the strangest stuff we’ve seen on the internet yet.

This footage, originally found on the NewGAF forums, shows what looks to be off-screen Halo 4 multiplayer gameplay footage on an old, standard-definition TV via VHS  inside a barn of some sort accompanied by some blaring music.

The multiplayer footage itself resembles what we’ve seen so far when it comes to Halo 4 gameplay. It also demonstrates the sprint ability, Promethean vision as well as the Railgun, a new addition to the Halo franchise. You can read here for more on the weapons of Halo 4.

If you decide to take a look at the footage originally posted by YouTuber Skid Kid, which you are most likely compelled to do so, perhaps consider turning off the sound as the music is rather loud and NSFW. Actual gameplay footage begins at 1:30, preceded by… a black bear sitting at a picnic table wearing a photoshopped face. Make sure to stick around until the end for some extreme insect-killing action.

[youtube id=”BPhhb1gidPg” width=”600″ height=”350″]

Microsoft or 343 Industries have yet to deny the legitimacy of the video, leading us to believe that the video is, indeed, real. Real bizzarre, that is. However, Microsoft did contact Kotaku, telling them, “we are conducting an internal beta test of Halo 4 which is a standard development practice for most video games. We have no plans for a public multiplayer beta for Halo 4.”

Leave your thoughts in the comments below!

Thanks, David Gumberg, for the tip.

Update: Below are also some beta screens via littleenglishhaloblog (thanks, Chris Mikha). Click for a larger size, though they are already pretty blurry like so.

Infinity Ward Teases “Exciting Unannounced Title For Next Generation Consoles”

It looks like Call of Duty is headed to the Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4!

“Come work with the game industry’s brightest to design and implement high level network code for an exciting unannounced title for next generation console systems,” reads an ad for a Senior Network Engineer position in the Infinity Ward studios, creators of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare franchise.

Earlier, Treyarch was rumored to be heading a next-gen project thanks to an ad stating that the team was looking for employees with next-gen experience using next-gen tools.

Activision’s only other known next-gen project happens to be Bungie’s recently announced project codenamed “Destiny.”

Infinity Ward’s ad, discovered by NowGamer, clearly suggests a next-gen Call of Duty title in the works. The questions is: will it be Modern Warfare 4, or an entirely new series?

Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Ubisoft Addresses Ghost Recon Future Soldier Server Malfunction, Servers Now Up and Running

Last night, many gamers attempting to play Ghost Recon Future Solder on the PS3 or Xbox 360 were running into numerous troubles connecting to the GRFS servers or utilizing the Ghost Recon Network. However, after some emergency maintenance, Ubisoft announces that servers are back online and had this to say on the official forums regarding the issues:

The Ghost Recon Future Soldier community is very important to us and as such, we wanted to take a moment to offer some transparency into what happened with the Ubisoft services as a whole last night.

Beginning early evening yesterday, we began noting degradation in service that was affecting players’ ability to connect and enjoy their games. As the issue continued to degrade, we were forced to take all game services offline and perform emergency maintenance.

The root cause was determined to be an unforeseeable hardware malfunction which caused the servers to experience continuously diminishing performance.

We reacted as quickly as possible to isolate the issue, perform the required maintenance, and bring service back online.

We know how important online play is to our community and work extremely hard to provide the quality of service you deserve.

To reiterate, servers are back to normal operation.

We will follow up with additional details as soon as possible.

Make sure to read up on our Ghost Recon Future Solder multiplayer review!

Battlefield 3 – Online Retailer Reveals Potential Release Dates for Close Quarters and Armored Kill

With the month of June quickly closing in, many Battlefield 3 fans are getting anxious to find out more about DICE’s upcoming DLC plans. As many already know, DICE has confirmed Close Quarters to drop this June while Armored Kill was announced for fall 2012. Though End Game is officially slated for a Winter 2012 release, recent rumors put it at a 2013 release with a 5th expansion pack called Aftermath to drop before it. Read more on the current rumors of Battlefield Premium and Aftermath here.

Recently, we discovered South African retailer BT Games, which has had a history of legitimate leaks, listing some dates that we could possibly expect Close Quarters and Armored Kill to be released.

This retailer puts the PC version of Close Quarters at a June 11th release date while Armored Kill is slated to release on September 23rd. End Game is listed as “Awaiting ETA.”

Update: These dates do land on a Monday and a Sunday respectively, so perhaps these could be taken as an approximation. Of course, PS3 users can expect both expansion packs a week earlier than PC and Xbox 360.

You may remember our earlier report confirming Close Quarters to be listed at 14.99 USD which can most likely be said about the following expansions as well.

Starhawk Patch 1.01.001 Coming Next Week, More on Balancing And Future Plans

Lightbox Interactive is gearing up for the release of the next Starhawk patch. In this patch you’ll find many new balance changes along with improved networking and the enabling of the complaint system.

What’s included in the next patch:

  • B&B OutPost cost reduced from 8 to 4 Rift
  • Field Mechanic Skill now auto-repairs Hawks far more slowly
  • OX Tank HE Shell direct-hit damage reduced by 33%
  • OX Tank HE Shell blast damage reduced by 33%
  • OX Tank HE Shell now has slower rate of fire
  • OX Tank HE Shell accuracy has been reduced a small amount
  • OX Tank vehicle construction cost increased from 2 to 4 Rift
  • Hawk Cluster Bomb blast damage reduced 40% per bomb
  • Hawk Cluster Bomb blast damage area reduced from 30′ to 20′
  • Hawk Cluster Bomb blast damage fall-off increased
  • Hawk Shield damage absorption-capacity has been reduced by 50%
  • Hawk Cloak time has been reduced by 33%
  • Hawk Homing missile Max speed has been increased by 25%
  • Hawk Homing Missile target acquisition speed has been increased by 70%
  • Hawk Homing Missile thrust-delay reduced by 50%
  • Player Complaint System is enabled
  • SkillScore now factored-in for Matchmaking
  • Updated “Player-Danger” icons & logic for server-list
  • Auto-Turret dismantle now twice as fast

If you would like to read more on the reasoning behind each of the changes, make sure to visit the official patch note page.

As for networking errors, the team is still working hard on it and this patch should improve it just a bit. However, expect bigger fixes  in the next patch as it’ll improve stability along with adding a new network error system that’ll automatically send errors to them. With this system, they should be able to pinpoint where issues are happening the most and how they could fix it.

The team is also working hard on those free maps that they have promised and hope to have information in the coming weeks. Along with new maps, they are also working on some brand new game modes and have teased that they are currently beta testing one called “Flight-CT”. According to the team, this game mode plays similar to that of Quidditch (Harry Potter):

“Team-based air-combat, 1 ‘ball’ in the middle of the sky and 2 goals one at either end of the map. You score points by getting the “ball” and flying through the goal. The prototype was early and rough but it was hella-fun and we’ll keep you posted on how it develops, and when it looks like we’ll release it for all of you guys to get your hands on!”

That’s all the Starhawk news for today. If you haven’t yet, make sure to check out my multiplayer review of Starhawk.

BF3 – More Battlefield Premium Details Surface Revealing What’s Included And Title of 5th DLC

From the same sources that leaked initial details of Battlefield Premium, we’ve learned further information on what exactly might be offerred in this “premium” package. Of course, this information is unofficial until proven otherwise by DICE or EA, but here’s what we know so far.

Update 2: coolshop UK lists Battlefield Premium at 34.96 GBP which converts to just under $60.00 as well. (Thanks, Colonel Ramirez.)

Update 1: Danish retailer coolshop lists Battlefield Premium at 369 Danish Kroner which converts to around $60.00 USD. The description translated reads:

BF3 Premium Service is 1 code in a box to give the consumers early access to the BF3 DLC expansion packs – Back to Karkand (already released), Close Quarters (releasing June), Armoured Kill (releasing Sept) and End Game (releasing December).

It does not, however, list the 5th DLC, Aftermath, so we’ll have to wait for confirmation on that info.

Original Info:

Battlefield Premium will allegedly include:

  • 20 Maps
  • 20 New Weapons
  • 10+ New Vehicles
  • 4+ New Game Modes
  • 30+ Assignments
  • 20+ Dog Tags
  • Also includes “Premium Benefits” which are made up of skins, camos and most importantly early access to all DLC.

These maps, weapons, vehicles game modes assignments and dog tags are spread across the following DLC:

  • Back to Karkand
  • Close Quarters in June 2012
  • Armored Kill in Fall 2012
  • Aftermath in late 2012
  • End Game in Spring 2013

If this info is correct, this means we can expect a 5th, unannounced expansion pack titled Aftermath to be released before End Game. It is said that DICE will announce official details on June 4th during EA’s E3 press conference.

Stay tuned to MP1st on Twitter and Facebook as we learn more about Battlefield Premium.

Diablo III – Incoming Client Side Patch, Hot Fix Notes and Real Money Auction House Delayed Further

While Blizzard looks into stabilizing Diablo III further in order to accomodate for the upcoming real money auction house, fans can expect a client side patch next week.

Community manager Nethaera recently stated on Battle.net, “In light of the post-launch obstacles we’ve encountered, we have made the decision to move the launch of the real-money auction house beyond the previously estimated May time frame. As we mentioned in our original announcement, our goal has always been to ensure everyone has the smoothest experience possible when the real-money auction house launches, and we need a bit more time to iron out the existing general stability and gameplay issues before that feature goes live. While we don’t have a new launch date to share just yet, we’ll have more information soon.”

Nethaera added, “moving forward, additional server maintenances will be required – and sometime next week, we plan to release a game update in the form of a patch that will further address client issues and apply additional bug fixes.” It was also mentioned that Blizzard is looking into the best ways to address the loss of player achievements during the first hours following the game’s release.

Below is a list of hot fix notes for changes that have already gone live in the past few days (thanks, Eurogamer).

Note: There may be a few spoilers ahead for those who have not completed Diablo III on normal difficulty yet.

Monsters:

  • Mehtan the Necromancer and his skeletons can no longer be used to kill other monsters which have been kited to their location before or after the “Restless Sands” event.

General:

  • Players will now receive an error message when attempting to remove a gem from an item with no sockets (rather than disconnecting).
  • Players will now properly have their casting interrupted when attacked while performing resurrect on a fallen group member.
  • Resolved over 30 game and service crashes affecting players.

Classes:

  • Demon Hunter:
  • Active Skills:
  • Smoke Screen: Duration reduced from 2 seconds to 1 second (tooltip will still show 2 seconds).
  • Skill Rune – Lingering Fog: Now increases the duration of Smoke Screen to 1.5 seconds (tooltip will still show 3 seconds).
  • Monk:
  • Active Skills:
  • Fists of Thunder: Skill Rune – Quickening. Fixed an issue that was causing spirit regeneration to incorrectly trigger off critical hits from other sources, such as Sweeping Wind.
  • Mantra of Healing: Mantra of Healing will now correctly provide only two times the base healing effect for the first 3 seconds after activation, down from four times the base healing effect (tooltip will still show the old value).
  • Skill Rune – Boon of Protection. A maximum absorption amount has been set to 1000 Life.  This skill will be redesigned in an upcoming patch.
  • Wizard:
  • Active Skills:
  • Arcane Torrent: Skill Rune – Cascade. Fixed an issue that was causing Arcane Torrent to fire 3 new missiles per kill instead of only 1 new missile per kill. Number of simultaneously missiles generated from this rune will now cap at 10 missiles.
  • Energy Armor: Skill Rune – Force Armor. Amount of damage absorbed from a single attack will now cap at 100% of a player’s maximum Life.

Items:

  • The chest spawn in the Town Cellar in Alcanus has been changed from a 100% chance to spawn a Resplendant chest to a 50% chance to spawn a Normal chest.
  • Players can no longer dual-wield two-handed weapons.

Classes:

  • Monk:
  • Active Skills:
  • Serenity: Skill Rune – Tranquility. Duration of immunity granted to nearby allies from crowd control effects reduced from 2 seconds to 1 second.

Encounters:

  • Players will no longer remain invulnerable to attacks after defeating Diablo.
  • Players can no longer become stuck during Diablo’s Shadow Grab ability if a player blinds Diablo while Shadow Grab is being cast.

Items:

  • Equipping a shield on a follower as a demon hunter will no longer disconnect you from the game.

Quests:

  • Act I: Players can now always interact with Karyna during the quest and quest step “Trailing the Coven : Talk to Karyna” when they resume from a save.
  • Act II: The Enchantress will now always appear during the quest and quest step “Shadows in the Desert : Disrupt the Hidden Conclave.”
  • Act IV: Tyrael will now always be present for the in-game cutscene during the quest and quest step “Prime Evil : Climb to the Pinnacle of Heaven in the Silver Spire.”

Black Ops II Zombies – “We Just Want To Keep Making It,” Says Treyarch

Mark Lamia, Studio Head at Treyarch, entertains the idea of a spinoff for the ultra-popular Call of Duty game mode, Zombies.

“That’s interesting, because you know we finally did exclusive DLC Zombies for Black Ops; it had its own marketing campaign, had no multiplayer maps, had no campaign. It was just zombies,” referring to the original Black Ops’ latest DLC, Rezurrection, as Lamia stated in the latest issue of Gamemaster Magazine. “Millions of people clearly wanted it because they got it,” he added. He had no specific sales number on hand, but he did mention that it sold in the millions, keeping in mind that this is nine to ten months after the release of Black Ops.

Nazi Zombies originally debuted in Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Wold at War back in 2008 as a bare-bones, co-op add-on with one small map and no story – just wave after wave of increasingly difficult-to-kill zombies. Originally a mod, it has since then grown into it’s own universe with characters, story, unique weapons and even more dangerous zombies types. For many, it has become the go-to game mode in the Call of Duty series, becoming even more likeable than the competitive multiplayer, for some. Lamia insists that “the whole mode just exists because of fans.”

Treyarch has hinted that Zombies will no longer be a mini-game in Black Ops II, but a fully-fledged game mode with the additions of new gamed modes within, 8-player co-op and a possibility of competitive play. Given the amount of attention Zombies is receiving from Treyarch, It would not be surprising at all (in fact, it would probably make sense) if it ever ended up becoming it’s own spinoff title.

“Honestly, I don’t know where it’s going to go,” says Lamia. “Right now, it’s just part of Black Ops.” Whether it ever becomes a spinoff title or not, we can definitely expect more zombies, as he later stated, “we just want to keep making it basically.”

Would you purchase a Call of Duty: Zombies spinoff title, either as a full retail release or an arcade title? What would you like to see happen with the Zombies game mode in the future?

Minecraft Only Second to MW3 in Most Played Xbox 360 Titles (Week of May 14)

We recently stopped running the weekly top played Xbox 360 titles‘ feature as there wasn’t much movement within the charts. The same games led the charge week in week out.

However, with Minecraft making a big splash in terms of sales, a new challenger has entered the ring. In its’ first week, Minecraft broke into the top five games, coming in at number three in the week of May 7th. Yesterday, Microsoft’s Major Nelson has released the top 20 games* played on Xbox Live for the week of May 14th.

Minecraft has passed Treyarch’s Black Ops, and now only has Modern Warfare 3 in its’ sights. Check out the full list below:

  1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
  2. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition

*The activity is measured by uniques users, not hours played. As long as the console is hooked to the net, whatever you’re playing (single-player or multiplayer) counts.

Special Note: Unfortunately, there is no official activity numbers for PSN. PC, on the other hand, is almost impossible to track due to multiple services (Steam, Origin, Battle.net, and others) and independent games.
