Respawn Entertainment’s First Game Won’t Be Revealed at E3 2012

Respawn Entertainment’s big game reveal will not take place at this year’s E3, which kicks off in early June.

The unannounced Sci-Fi shooter, rumored to release in 2013, is not going to make an appearance at E3 2012, according to Respawn community manager, Abbie Heppe. “Some of us will be present at E3, but we won’t be showing anything or doing any press related to the game,” Heppe told Joystiq.

Little is known about what Respawn has up its’ sleeve, expect for a couple of blurry images, which you can see below.

Respawn Entertainment was formed in April 2010 by former Infinity Ward employees, and the studio’s first game will be published under the EA partners label.

Battlefield: Bad Company 3 Under Development According To Employee Resume

Our first hint of the existence of Battlefield: Bad Company 3 appears in the form of LinkedIn profiles which also reveal that development for Mirror’s Edge 2 may also be well underway.

Gamerzines has noticed that LinkedIn user Michael Joseph C. has listed that in between 2009 and 2011, he has “provided video game prototype, design and demo feedback on various AAA titles including the Battlefield: Bad Company 3, Dead Space 2, Devil May Cry 5 and other unannounced titles.”

Additionally, a former EA Software Engineer listed Mirror’s Edge 2 as a project between July and August 2009. He also mentioned the implementation of a “wandering of crowd system within Unreal3 engine.”

Of course, neither Battlefield: Bad Company 3 nor Mirror’s Edge 2 have been confirmed by DICE or EA, though we can hope to hear something of one of the two at this year’s E3.

When do you think we’ll see the release of Battlefield: Bad Company 3, assuming it will eventually be confirmed?

Halo 4 Limited Edition Announced, No Legendary Edition In The Works

343 Industries has just announced the Halo 4 Limited Edition bundling an impressive amount of in-game multiplayer content for Halo fans to sink their teeth into. The Halo 4 Limited Edition is available for preorder right now and retails at a price of $99.99.

What exactly does it include? Check out the details below as listed on the Halo Waypoint:

War Games Map Pack Access

The competitive multiplayer modes of Halo 4 are known as War Games. The Limited Edition includes access to nine maps – three future competitive multiplayer map packs, each including three locations, available for download post-launch on Xbox LIVE. Yes, you read that correctly; you get nine maps in the form of future DLC with the purchase of the Halo 4 Limited Edition. Score!

Specializations

Everyone will have access to select Specializations, but those that purchase the Halo 4 Limited Edition will receive the ability to unlock six Specializations early, available at launch on Xbox LIVE. You can use them, one at a time, to achieve higher ranks in your Spartan career. In addition to gaining access to new ranks, Specializations unlock new customization options. We’ll be releasing more information about Specializations at E3, so expect additional details about this particular feature then.

UNSC Infinity Briefing Packet

The UNSC Infinity Briefing Packet includes a Spartan armor customization schematic, information about UNSC weapons, an introduction to the massive ship UNSC Infinity, and insight into what it means to be one of humanity’s finest warriors: The Spartan-IVs. Story lovers will especially enjoy this in-fiction offering that provides a glimpse into the indoctrination of Spartans aboard the Infinity.

Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn Special Edition

The Special Edition of Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn is a 90-minute extended version of the live-action digital series which will take fans back to the terrifying beginning of the Human/Covenant war, when the Master Chief inspired a young cadet who would eventually become a leader aboard the UNSC’s greatest vessel ever: the UNSC Infinity.

Digital content also includes in-fiction bonus content that expands the characters and stories of Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, special featurette Bringing Gaming into Reality, and a behind the scenes look at the making of Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn.

Bonus digital content through Xbox LIVE

The Limited Edition includes the following bonus digital content through Xbox LIVE: unique in-game Spartan-IV armor skin, unique in-game weapon skin for the Assault Rifle, an exclusive in-game emblem, Xbox LIVE Avatar prop, and Xbox LIVE Avatar Spartan IV armor set.

Right about now you may be wondering, “If all those things come with the Limited Edition, what are they going to put in the Legendary Edition?” Here is the answer to that question: There will be two options available at retail for Halo 4 – the regular version of the game and the aforementioned Limited Edition. We decided to focus our efforts on a single special edition instead of numerous ones so you wouldn’t have to pick and choose between what ancillary items you want. Now your primary choice is whether or not you just want the game, or the game along with all the goodies. And we’re hoping we made that decision an easy one for you…

Are you going to be picking up the Halo 4 Limited Edition?

New Black Ops II Sound Clip Teased, More On Multiplayer Minimap

Treyarch Developer David Vonderhaar hands out some more Black Ops II goodies with an interesting new sound file hinting at some of the VO lines you’ll be hearing in BOII’s multiplayer.

Before we get to that, Vonderhaar also talked to some of his followers about Call of Duty’s minimap and how it could be improved. Vonderhaar reveals that, at one point, Treyarch experimented with a minimap that would display enemies on different floors of a building separately, so players could tell where they were in relation to the enemy on a vertical level. However, Vonderhaar explains that it was “prototyped and cut. Was too confusing. Hard to show 3D rep on a 2D map and a 3D map had usability issues.”

Some mentioned the idea of a coloured minimap, adding that the current one is too dull and boring. Vonderhaar answers, “to each his own. Monochromatic colors on the map help with seeing red dots and such. Trust me. I’ve tried many types of maps.”

In what ways do you think the current Call of Duty minimap could be improved?

Last night, Vonderhaar also teased his followers with a sound clip of a soldier stating the words, “objective parameters obtained. Well done.” The description reads: “Classified multiplayer Faction voice-over.”

Modern Warfare 3: Collection 2 Review

Yesterday, the minds behind Modern Warfare 3’s DLC gave Xbox 360 ELITE users the May DLC drops a week before the scheduled Collection 2 release. Since most of this will be packed into that Collection bundle, I’ll review these drops in case you’re wondering if it’s worth picking up or not. I’ll also get into details regarding the brand new Face Off mode and let you know what I think of it and determine whether or not it is a waste of your time and money.

Elite Drop 7: Sanctuary [Map][Download Size: 88 MB]

Sanctuary is an absolutely beautiful map. The Inner Circle takes on the SAS here on this Greek, cliff-side monastery. This is one of my personal favorite DLC maps for Modern Warfare 3 because of the different styles of play you can master on it. There are tight corridors for you SMG/Shotgun lovers, and there are also long and vertical sight lines for the snipers and assault rifle users. The map is a pretty decent size, but after a play-through or two you’ll pretty much remember most of the layouts. You’ll manage success when you plan your routes carefully and don’t run around like a maniac. My personal preference on this map is sticking to the outside routes. That way, nobody can sneak up behind you and you have a clear sight of what’s around you.

Elite Drop 8: Foundation [Map][Download Size: 114 MB]

On this cement factory map in Korea, the Spetsnaz take on Delta. The key to success here is holding down the vertical spots as well as maintaining the outsides of the map, as those routes count for some good flanking action. Although there’s two ways up to the catwalk over-looking the entire map, this area is deadly for those with good aim. I have never been a fan of vertical gameplay in Call of Duty games, it’s just a huge nest for window campers in most situations, but not here. You are fully exposed if you are up on this catwalk, so I’d advise you get the 2-3 kills you can possibly get then book it on out. Again, as always, stick to the outsides and avoid the rushes through the middle, unless you run with an SMG steady aim class. This map is not as good as Sanctuary is, but still much better than some previous map drops.

Elite Drop 9: Oasis [Map][Download Size: 95 MB]

I have to applaud the team that made this map. Not only is the scenery gorgeous as you’re playing on beach resort, but the map itself applies to all play styles. There are tight corridors with medium-ranged sight lines for the assault rifle players and there are also long sight lines on the outsides for the snipers. This map does not preach vertical gameplay as I only noticed two spots on the entire map that have it, both with two ways up. This map is about the same size as Foundation if I had to give a comparison. The Inner Circle battle against Delta here, and I don’t know about you, but I’m about sick of hearing Makarov’s voice. Overall though, this is my most favorite multiplayer map out of the three in this collection.

Elite Drop 10: Kill Switch [Spec Ops][Download Size: 148 MB]

Players going on the Killswitch mission will play in an all-new battlefield set in a Russian dockyard. You will have to pick between you and your partner, who will control overwatch with a sniper and who will patrol the ground with an MP5/SCAR combo. I had a chance to participate in both roles and playing as the sniper is some addicting fun. The sniper also controls a reaper once your partner arrives to the EMP building. The objective here was to clear out arriving backup so your partner can escape the building unscathed. After you escort your partner through the building in which he has to detonate an EMP, a chopper comes up to your nest and shoots you down. Once you both are on the ground after that sequence, everything is dark and gritty due to the EMP blast and you must fight your way to an escape boat on the dock, but you have to get past two juggernauts first. This mission takes about 6 to 8 minutes depending on your play style. I wish Infinity Ward would throw more of these Spec Ops missions into these collection packs. It’s definitely something I have fun with.

Elite Drop 11: Iron Clad [Spec Ops][Download Size: 18 MB]

Ironclad is set after the Hamburg mission from the single player campaign with two players and features asynchronous combat, with one player clearing obstacles while the other engaging in combat from the gunner seat of a tank. Controlling the tank isn’t as cool as you may think, as you don’t see a HUD from inside the tank. You’re only the gunner, similar to how it was back in previous COD’s. The only control over the tank that you have is whether you choose to advance forward, or go backwards. You cannot free roam the tank and drive it where you please. It’s a on-rails gameplay. You get to shoot both the machine gun and cannons, clearing the battlefield allowing your partner to advance by blowing roadblocks with C4. You’ll have to overcome opposing tanks, helicopter’s, suicide bombers and guy’s with RPG’s. This mission on Veteran is much harder than Kill Switch was because of how many enemies you have to face. The other point of view from the ground infantryman isn’t anything we haven’t already seen. The main attraction here is being in that tank and causing havoc on the opposition.

Elite Drop 12: Getaway/Lookout [Maps][Face-Off][Download Size: 139 MB]

The ELITE Face Off playlists are comprised of 1v1 and 2v2 gameplay. The 1v1 playlist is only Kill Confirmed and Team Deathmatch. The 2v2 playlist is a mixture of Team Deathmatch, Kill Confirmed, Team Defender, Domination, as well Search and Destroy. You cannot be in a party chat and play in these playlists. You are able to run private matches on the Face Off maps on any game mode.

[youtube id=”jtp8h-4la7Y” width=”600″ height=”350″]

Getaway is my most favorite map out of all of the Face Off maps. A little smaller than Lookout, it’s extremely fun for 1v1 action. It’s imperative to run Dead Silence here because of how loud your footsteps are on the wood flooring, as you may 1v1 a try-hard that likes to sound whore. There are multiple ways into the house and the swimming pool provides a unique scenario where you can actually commit suicide if you’re under water too long. If you see someone camping in the pool, toss a stun grenade at him. Since the water doesn’t stop it, it detonates anyways. Thanks for the realism Infinity Ward.

[youtube id=”MbB0vGeYJ8U” width=”600″ height=”350″]

Lookout is an extremely dull looking map, it’s nothing but brown. Everywhere. I got to play a 2v2 here and although I was a skeptic of the Face-Off mode to begin with, it actually ran quite nicely. You may run into your share of campers, though. There’s a lot of ins-and-outs in this map and not too much cover. I found the key to this was honestly being aggressive. Watch your back though, since these maps are small. The spawn system will get you killed from time to time. Out of the four Face Off maps I played, Lookout and Getaway are the smallest.

Overall, with the price point at 1200 Microsoft Points, or $15 USD, you get these six pieces of content. Technically speaking, each piece is 200 Microsoft Points, or $2.50 USD. At that price point, it’s hard to argue with what you’re getting. The three multiplayer maps are better than some previous drops, the Face Off maps are great and can be used in private matches for bigger battles. The Spec Ops missions are also good value too. Infinity Ward can never go wrong with those. I believe this map pack is worth it for any avid Modern Warfare 3 player if you aren’t already an ELITE member.

Black Ops II and Footstep Sounds – To Hear or Not To Hear?

Sound has always played an important role in the serious Call of Duty gamer’s game plan. Commonly referred to as “sound whoring,” it is a technique that must be developed in order to play at pro levels. With previous Call of Duty titles featuring perks that altered the volume of enemy footsteps but never having quite perfected the balance issues, Treyarch developer David Vonderhaar is looking to strike a happy middle ground in the upcoming Black Ops II.

According to Vonderhaar, Call of Duty games have “traditionally had perks that have made your footsteps quiet or quieter (depending on your point of view about what should be included in that: gear rattle, weapon switch sounds, mantel exertions, breath noise, pain recovery., etc),” and have “also had perks (or perk pros, depending on the game) that make enemy footsteps louder.”

The question that Vonderhaar poses to his followers is this:

So, if I have a perk that makes me quiet (or quieter, or my footsteps quieter) and you have a perk that makes makes my footsteps louder, what would you expect to happen:

1. Nothing. You having a perk that makes my footsteps louder should not make them louder if I have a perk that makes them quiet.

(This is how it often works in previous games.)

2. Cancel each other out. You would hear my footsteps the way it would be if neither of us had any perk.

(This makes sense to me, but it could be odd when you don’t make noise to yourself, but do to other players.)

3. Another answer in this space.

That last one looks about right to us. What about you guys? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!

If you missed it, David Vonderhaar also hinted at a new knifing system making its way to Black Ops II.

Starhawk Multiplayer Review

In 2007, Sony Computer Entertainment and Incognito Entertainment released one of the most underrated Playstation 3 titles known as Warhawk. At the time, Warhawk had one of the best multiplayer experience around. It had everything a player could ask for; a strong community, amazing gameplay, great focus on teamwork, and a huge abundance of online options such as a server list and a fully functional clan system. It was only last year that Sony finally decided to announce their new follow-up title, Starhawk. Though not a direct sequel, Starhawk offers just as much as the original did and more.

Single Player

Though there is a story this time around, the single player’s main purpose is to prepare players for the online component of the game. For anyone, I highly suggest checking this mode out before even getting started as it teaches you all the basics and gives you a well detailed explanation of how things work in multiplayer.

Controls and Gameplay

The controls follow your traditional third-person layout. Aim with the right stick, move with the left. Shoot with R1, sprint with R2. Aim from the hip with L1 and pop a grenade with L2. Like I said, traditional layout when your on foot. The overall feeling is the same as well, except with the aim that could take some time to get use to as there isn’t any kind of assist other than with the hawks. Otherwise, its easy for anyone to jump in and learn the basic gameplay mechanics in a short period of time.

Vehicle controls are just as easy, though working a hawk to do certain maneuvers and keeping on pace with a target can take time to get use to. In the air, hawks operate just as one would expect. They are fun and can prove to be quiet agile. If you remember dog fights from Warhawk, then you’ll be familiar with how things work. Find an opponent and engage them in a fast paced battle. Automatically, your Hawk is equipped with the standard machine gun and though powerful, you won’t be getting far with that alone. For hawks, the whole air space is littered with pick-ups. Flying around and collecting them can prove to be very helpful as it’s important to cause the most damage and have weapons that can lock onto other hawks. Though if you happen to find the skies empty of enemies, then you can transform your hawk into a mech, which will be able to take out most ground enemies. Things get a bit slow and clunky when in mech form, but that’s to be expected. Otherwise, for the most part, all vehicles other than the Ox Tank (will get to that later) serve as transport vehicles. This meaning that they’re designed to travel from point A to point B at a fast rate of speed.

As mentioned above, there are pick-ups in the game. However, for those who were familiar with them in Warhawk, Starhawk has completely done away with them when it comes to ground combat. Though killing an enemy will cause certain pick-ups to be dropped, the chances of actually finding a placed pick-up are very slim as they aren’t as diverse as they were in Warhawk. You will find pre-made structures that’ll have some pick-ups like the Sniper Rifle, but for the most part, you’ll be using the brand new Build and Battle system.

The Build and Battle System is obviously the biggest change to occur. This new system allows you to build set pieces such as supply bunkers (contains all your pick-ups) or a hawk station almost anywhere on the battlefield with a simple push of the triangle button. It brings the elements of an RTS game into a third-person shooter. Like any RTS game, you’ll want to set up a balance between defense and attacking. Setting things up like auto turrets, beam cannons, or a sniper posts are typically your defenses, while hawks and other vehicle stations will be used as your offense. Though, unlike an RTS title, everyone has control over the battlefield, meaning that while you build something, someone else is building another thing. The capacity for structures on each team is locked at 32. Once the cap has been reached, nothing else can be built until either you recollect a structure or one is destroyed. Though I would have liked a higher cap., one has to remember that there should be some sort of balance to this system. We wouldn’t want auto-turrets placed in every spot possible on a map. Plus, this does run on a currency system based on Rift Energy. Players can gain Rift Energy by farming them at the base, killing enemies, or blowing up rift containers. Each structure has a certain amount of rift points that is required to be used. The higher the cost, the better the build is. Overall, the Build and Battle System is an extremely innovating feature and I welcome it, though that doesn’t go without saying that it does have its flaws.

The Bad

The main issue that I found with the Build and Battle System is the way teams are using their resources. At times it can become frustrating as, often, you’ll attempt to snatch a flag only to get killed within seconds of the opposing team’s spawn area. Other times you’ll find that the team your on isn’t focusing enough on defense and when they are, no one is on the offense. It’s either camp at your base or be overrun by the opposing side. This is typically applied to objective based modes and not on your standard team deathmatches. And even in great games where everything does work properly, you’ll find that some players are purposely going around and destroying their own team structure. I don’t mind it happening to low cost items such as a bunker, but when I’ve saved up ten rift points to build a depot and some other player tears it down right away, that’s when it becomes annoying. I would love to see an option that tells me whether or not I should allow others to reclaim my structures.

Also, I was a bit disappointed with how hawks have seemed to become completely useless in this game compared to Warhawk. Perhaps it was just me, but most of the time when I was in a hawk, I would always get shot down right away by beam cannons or other hawks controlled by the opposite faction. From memory, hawks in Warhawk played a significant and important role. Now, it seems that the whole Build and Battle idea has destroyed that concept. Though, standard deathmatches can actually be played with hawks only, so not all is lost.

The Good

Customization for this game is pretty big and perhaps one of its biggest highlights. Though it’s not as deep as games like Skyrim, the option to customize all your vehicles, characters, and emblems from either faction is a pretty awesome feature considering most multiplayer games ignore this completely. Characters from either faction can be customized from head down, though you will have to unlock additional pieces as you’ll only be able to start out with just one available item. The only thing that you can’t change for a character is the accessory, which is the knife. I’m going to assume that they will offer different pieces as DLC later. As for vehicles, the customization, sadly, is only for cosmetic looks. There are a wide arrange of different paint sets though, which all do look quiet unique. Each player can also have their own unique emblem, which contains two different layers. This adds individuality to each player emblem as they can be customized with different colors and shapes.

The skill system is another huge part of character customization/development. As you level up, you’ll be rewarded with skill points. When your in a match, you’ll be able to select the skill menu and buy certain skills. Once they are bought, you don’t have to repurchase them again. One thing to note though is that skill points alone won’t unlock these skills, as an additional prerequisite will be required. All skills in the game cost 2 points, but every single one of them has a different requirement. For the skill called “Scavenger,” which increases your max ammo and increases ammo from pick ups, you’ll need to get one kill with every troop weapon in a single game. Once that has been done, you’ll be able to purchase that skill. In a sense, it’s a great way to set up multiplayer challenges, though the only downside is that you can only have one equipped at a time, but that doesn’t stop you from entering the menu during games to switch it up.

Vehicles, vehicles and vehicles. Beside the hawk, there are also three other vehicles in the game. The first one is the Razorback. This is essentially your Warthog, or jeep with a machine gun. Gather up a few players and use this vehicle to storm enemies bases. One driver and one gunner, while the rest are passengers. This is the perfect vehicle to use during Capture the flag as it serves as a fast transport vehicle for multiple players.

The next vehicle is known as the Sidewinder, or as I like to call it, The Grasshopper. This is a single manned vehicle that can reach incredible speeds. It’s most likely the fastest way of land travel available in the game. The reason why I like calling it the Grasshopper is that it bears a small resemblance to that of a Grasshopper, plus it has an incredible jump reach. Often, you’ll reach high speeds and as you jump, you’ll soar right past groups of enemies. As mentioned, it’s the fastest land vehicle available and can be quiet useful in tight situations like capture the flag.

And finally, The Ox Tank. This is probably one of my most favorite vehicles available and is the most expensive build in the entire game. Pretty much, it’s a tank, nothing really special about it other then the fact that it destroys literally everything in its path. Whether it’s at a close range or across the map, if it’s in view, then it can reach it. The only true protection against this is shield barriers, which protect specific areas with a shield. Otherwise, your free to wreak havoc across the plain field. In truth though, this is a vehicle that is a bit overpowered, but with the right set-up, it can easily be destroyed.

As for the overall menu/U.I. set-up, this was perhaps one of the most surprising things that was included in the game. Like any MP title, your constantly switching between menus and such. It’s not really much of a bother, but when playing Starhawk, little things like that really do make a big difference. Every aspect of the multiplayer can be accessed with a simple push of the start button. Whether your playing single player, or in another match, you’ll always be able to access everything for multiplayer. To explain this a bit better, imagine your playing Single Player and you decide that you want to jump into the multiplayer. Like many (if not all) titles, your going to have to quit, select multiplayer, wait for it to load your profile then join. With Starhawk as soon as you push the start button, the options to play campaign, join a MP game, view the server list, skill system, character customization, pretty much everything available in the game will be right there instantly making the overall experience seem-less. It’s fast and it’s easy. For me, this was really a huge thing as like many other title, load screens and waiting can get quiet annoying after time.

Game Modes

Starhawk comes packed with five different multiplayer game modes. The first two are your standard team death and deathmatch. The other ones are Capture the Flag, Zones, and Co-op (prospector). With Capture the Flag, your goal here is to capture the opposing enemies flag. This may prove to be a challenge though, considering that bases with the flags are never the same. With Zones (my personal favorite), you’ll be tasked with capturing areas on the map. It’s a simple game of domination, only if all areas are conquered by one team, then it’s an automatic win for them. However, that doesn’t happen so often. Co-op is essentially just a survival/hoard mode game mode where you and three other players fend off high level difficulty A.I’s from a rift reactor.

Community:

One issue with the Playstation 3’s overall community is the lack of microphones. Besides Call of Duty, gamers on the  Playstation 3, for unknown reasons, just don’t use mics as often as they should be. I’m taking a guess, since the first Warhawk title included a mic, players in Starhawk already know how crucial it is to use it. Every game that I joined had players using their mics. There is one thing that you must know though before even thinking about playing the game: It requires teamwork and lots of it. I’m a person who enjoys teamwork  and find that most games that emphasize it are my most enjoyable and most memorable titles. Anyway, expect people to be yelling at you (wich you can mute) if your not following directives or are just fooling around. This is a game to have fun in, but it should be known that many of the players are very serious with how matches run. It’s great knowing that you can find a game filled with other people who are just as serious as winning as you are.

There’s also a fully functional clan system, which is an absolute must-use feature. Pretty much, you’ll be able to either join or create your own clan with it’s own unique name and tags. However, unlike many multiplayer titles today, clans will actually have their own stats. The stats keep track of clans’ average KDR, average XP and where they stack up against others on a leaderboard. Clans can also battle each other and all this information of who won or lost is all tracked. Leaders can also assign members with different rankings so that they may help later on in the future when it comes to recruiting new members. For clan battles, Starhawk is an ideal choice of game since it supports it so well. This new system encourages players to join and participate in clan battles, which is something that many multiplayer games lack.

Graphics

For a sci-fi third person shooter, Starhawk stands pretty well in the graphic department. Although Lightbox Interactive isn’t setting any bars here, the vast worlds of Starhawk is truly something to be proud of. Every planet (maps) all look great and are all different from one another. On one planet you’ll be traveling through a bleak land of sand, while another would be filled with with lakes of acid that’ll instantly kill you. I’ll admit that for the most part the game does look a bit lacking when it comes to doing a comparison with other titles, but for what’s being presented in-game I do have to say that it’s quiet enjoyable to look at.

The Verdict

Starhawk is one of those title that you can either hate or love. For newcomers, you may find it a bit challenging, but once it begins to grow on you, you’ll be enjoying one of the best multiplayer experience available on the Playstation 3. Packed with nearly everything a multiplayer game should have, Starhawk is truly a spiritual successor of Warhawk.

Modern Warfare 3 PS3 Patch 1.14 Now Live, Patch Notes for Earlier Updates

Infinity Ward has just released a new patch for the PS3 version of Modern Warfare 3, and published the patch notes for earlier PS3 and PC updates.

Patch 1.14, or title update #14, for Modern Warfare 3 is now available to download on PS3, weighing in at 27MB. While it’s still unknown what exactly the new patch has addressed, MP1st reader Moriarty referred us to a recent forum thread, where an Infinity Ward developer mentioned yesterday that the next update will further address matchmaking. The developer stated, “It [matchmaking change] will arrive with the next TU. On other platforms we are pushing for an emergency TU to coincide as soon as possible to its arrival on Xbox.”

He also listed other changes in the works that could have been included in today’s update. Of course, we’ll keep you posted as soon as the official patch notes are made public.

  • The team are looking into both the SRP/DS issue when a player is using both perks.
  • They are also testing the functionality of Blindeye when it appears as part of a Specialist Strike Package.
  • Lastly, the next TU will patch a glitch allowing Elite users to apply dual attachments with other weapon proficiencies.

In terms of older patch notes, Infinity Ward has released the change lists for PS3 patch 1.13 and PC 1.12. We were able to figure out almost everything noted below when the patches went live on May 8th for PC and May 10 for PS3:

Patch 1.12 (PC)

  • Support for Collection 1.
  • Caught up on hot fixes and glitches made to date on other platforms. (You can see all the official patch notes here)
  • Added FFA Gunplay and Infected to play lists.

Title Update #13 (PS3):

  • Dead Silence/Sit Rep Pro functionality fix.
  • Support for Elite Drops 7 and 8

Thanks to Moriarty, Gav, and HyperMole for all the help.

Black Ops II To Include a New Knifing System and SnD-Inspired Game Mode?

Little has been confirmed about the gameplay and game modes of Black Ops II’s multiplayer other than the fact that it will be set in the year 2025, as confirmed earlier by Studio Head at Treyarch Mark Lamia, and other than what we’ve discovered in our trailer analysis. However, since Black Ops II’s reveal on May 1st, developers at Treyarch have given us at least a few hints that we’ll have to make due with.

Treyarch has confirmed Zombies to be returning, as many already know, but you may have missed that Combat Training, a popular practice game mode featured in the original Black Ops, will also be returning as confirmed by Treyarch on Twitter.

When it comes to multiplayer, little is known about the game modes we will be treated to. We can assume standards like free-for-all, team deathmatch and domination will be returning, but what about the fan-favorite Search-and-Destroy? According to Gameplay Designer at Treyarch, David Vonderhaar, we will be seeing a game mode (or game modes) that is “inspired by” SnD, but perhaps not quite the same. “We have some things inspired by that mode I can’t wait till you about later this year,” Vonderhaar stated in response to a follower on Twitter.

He also added that the “MP has new fan requested Mute options for easy muting of everyone in the lobby except your party.”

Additionally, Vonderhaar has also given us something to chew on regarding Black Ops II’s knifing system, something that has been a controversial aspect of Call of Duty’s gameplay for a while now. In response to YouTuber OnlyUseMeBlade, Vonderhaar recently tweeted, “we have something coming that you’ll more or less be wanting to take credit for. I’m looking forward to that day.”

On the IPlayCoD forums (via Charlie Intel), user aadamstewartt has gathered a number of things this could mean, referring to some ideas OnlyUseMeBlade had regarding Call of Duty’s knifing system:

  • A default two-hit knife system with a perk that makes it one-hit knife
  • The knife to be a secondary
  • The knife to be in the equipment slot

What changes to the knifing system would you like to see made in Black Ops II? What do you think this new SnD-inspired multiplayer game mode could be? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Thanks, James K.

Max Payne 3 Multiplayer Review

Max Payne 3 is Rockstar Games’ gem in 2012. We haven’t seen a Max Payne game since 2003, but as many had hoped, Rockstar Games revived the franchise and gave it a whole new breath of fresh air. Boasting a multiplayer experience for the first time in the series, many hoped it would be done right as there’s much potential to be had coming from a juggernaut developer like Rockstar. Did they live up to the hype and make a memorable multiplayer experience?

Above is a video that goes in depth about the menus, weapons and what you can expect on that front. This includes grinds, crews, create-a-class, bursts and playlists. I’ve spent a bulk of my time playing both Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch in both Free Aim and Soft Aim playlists and my first impressions of the game are not looking so great.

Sure, games may grow on you, but what a game brings to the table as a first impression is extremely important. You’ll notice at first that the game plays pretty much like GTA IV in terms of movement and the pace of the gameplay. A couple of annoyances that jumped out at me first was the control scheme and the chunkiness of it. For example, to throw a grenade, you need to hold down the Left Bumper (360) and the press the Right Bumper to toss the grenade. To swap shoulder views you need to press left or right on the d-pad, which means you need to take your finger off the left thumbstick, unless you’ve trained your fingers wisely over the years. Sprinting doesn’t seem worth it as you don’t run much faster than you walk, on top of the fact you need to press the sprint button again to stop sprinting if you haven’t already ran out of stamina.

The weapon and character customization and the grinds make the game fun to play, but the gameplay itself isn’t anything special. You’ll have people out-dueling you from long distances with dual wielding pistols, which occurred to me multiple times. The two-handed weapons seemed fairly balanced. I got to try out the AK-47, Mini 30 and FAL especially. The single handed weapons are what I have a major concern with. You can essentially run around a map with nothing but a pistol and wreak havoc. They are extremely overpowered, and when duel wielding with a M10 or another pistol, they become extremely deadly at short to medium distances.

Another decent strong point for the game are the maps. Although there aren’t many, the ones that are there are pretty good. This is also a downside because a smaller number of maps means you play the same ones over and over again. I probably played the office deathmatch map about 10 times alone. The game supports both 4v4 and 8v8 playlists so it’s built for all sorts of party types. I haven’t been able to test the Payne Killer or Gang Wars modes because not many people outside of reviewers are currently playing the game. Once those modes become populated, I will update my review with my impressions of them.

Overall, this multiplayer experience is forgettable. Clunky controls, slow gameplay and the fact that pistols/duel-wielded weapons reign supreme – I think this is a game you should pass on. It doesn’t do anything special that any other multiplayer title doesn’t do. It’s basically GTA IV multiplayer wrapped in a Max Payne 3 world, and with GTA IV being almost 4 years old, most of us want to see innovation. Wait this one out and purchase it when it becomes cheaper, or simply buy it because you’re a huge Max Payne/Rockstar fanatic.

MW3 Prestige Levels 16-20 to Be Added to Xbox 360 on May 15th, PS3 in June

Last week, we reported on the fact that the latest Modern Warfare 3 PC patch increased the number of prestige levels on the platform to 20. Also, we noted that Xbox 360 and PS3 users will get the same treatment at a later point.

In response to our earlier report, Infinity Ward on Twitter confirmed the addition to the PC version of the game, and gave PS3 and Xbox 360 a time frame as to when levels 16-20 will be added to Modern Warfare 3. “Yes, prestige 16-20 are out now on PC MW3. [The five new prestige levels] will release for Xbox on 5/15 and PS3 mid-June,” Infinity Ward stated. Five new prestige levels equate to 400 extra ranks.

Of course, the month gap between the two consoles didn’t sit well with some PS3 players. Activision’s Dan Amrich took to Twitter to clarify, “As I understand it, it’s more efficient to update multiple things in one game patch. I think that’s why PS3 adds MW3 prestiges in June w/DLC.” He added, “I say this because a lot of people are taking the delay as a personal insult. But nobody hates you; it’s just how patches work, AFAIK.”  Releasing a patch for consoles reportedly costs $40,000.

It was recently announced that Xbox 360 users, with Elite premium subscriptions, will receive several DLC drops tomorrow, May 15th. Of course, PS3 players will have to wait until mid-June to get the new DLC along with the aforementioned prestige levels.

Starhawk – Hot Fixes, Matchmaking for Co-Op, Complaint System, and Beta Gifts Release Dates

Dylan Jobe has revealed some details about upcoming fixes along with when Starhawk players can expect their beta gifts.

Many players have reported that Starhawk is suffering from connection issues. Dylan Jobe has said that these issues are being looked into, and players can expect a hot-fix to roll out once LightBox “finishes launching this week (just finished Japan).” Other issues such as server filtering are also being looked into as some players have reported that they don’t load fully. Also, for those who were familiar with the complaint/report system in Warhawk you may have notice that it is currently missing in Starhawk. This is because the system has not been activated yet, and will be included in an upcoming hot-fix.

If you’ve been playing the co-op mode, then you’ll know that the only way to play with someone is either by split-screen or through a PSN invite. Though not 100% confirmed, Dylan has stated that once the global launch is complete the team will be evaluating matchmaking for Co-Op.

In case you are wondering when your free Starhawk beta gifts are suppose to be coming in, Dylan Jobe has confirmed that territories under SCEE have already gotten the Warhawk paint, which is free for beta testers who played Warhawk, and the glowing hand sphere, which is free for all beta testers. As for SCEA (North America), be on the look out for a PSN Message on Monday, which will contain details about the free gifts (should be available that day). You can check out the beta gifts here.

Make sure though that you following these steps to get your message, according to the Starhawk facebook page.
“Starhawk Beta gifts update: Looks like they will come Monday. They will come via a message in the PS3 XMB. Make sure that you allow Sony to send you news, info, etc.
You can do this in your Account Management>>>Account Informatiion>>>Notification Preferences. If you do not allow this you will not get the message. Pass it on.”

In case you missed it, all future map packs for Starhawk will be free.

Battlefield 3 Double XP Weekend Event for PC Delayed Until May 26th

Yesterday, the first Battlefield 3 double XP weekend was announced. Players started earning double XP today at 12:01am PST only on PS3 and Xbox 360, and will continue to do so until Sunday night. Unfortunately, DICE wasn’t able to include PC for this event, and has decided to delay it until May 26th.

DICE has published a banner on the Battlelog announcing that the double XP weekend event has been pushed back for two weeks. The banner reads, “PC players: Apologies for delay in your 2XP event. To give you a full weekend as planned, we’re rescheduling this for May 26-27.” DICE added on the official Battlefield Twitter account, “We gave our developers 2 weeks to be sure that the game performs correctly for PC users. Why rush it, right?”

Thanks, Reddit
