Battlefield 3 – DICE Adds More Official Servers To Console Server Browser

A few days ago, Global Community Manager at DICE, Daniel “zh1nt0” Matros addressed the growing concern of the lack of Official DICE servers on the console version of Battlefield 3, stating, “I’ve heard [the concerns] for a while now and the feedback has gotten louder.”

Since the introduction of the ability to rent Private Servers on consoles, player have noticed the steady removal of DICE servers – servers that provided un-altered game rules and settings and that were not at the mercy of ban-happy administrators. When asked if the removal of these servers was a permanent decision, Matros responded with hope, “everything in the wonderful world of Battlefield is dynamic.”

We’ve learned that change is taking place as DICE officially announced last Friday on Twitter, “we’ll be adding more servers & will reserve a percentage of them for players who prefer DICE servers. Thx for your patience!”

Additionally, an official statement from DICE was sent to GamesBeat clearing up the issue and signifying the addition and maintenance of more DICE servers.

“DICE is not shutting down servers. If DICE-managed servers appear unavailable, it is because they have been rented and customized by players. DICE will continue to add servers and will reserve a percentage of servers for players who prefer to connect through DICE-hosted servers.

Custom Servers have always been extremely popular with Battlefield PC players. With Battlefield 3, we’ve introduced a Custom Servers program to console gamers. Response has been overwhelmingly positive. Custom Servers gives players the ability to tailor the settings and parameters of a given server, which directly affects gameplay. It also gives players more choice as they select which server and gameplay style they like best.

As with any new innovation, there may be some confusion among players who are experiencing Custom Servers for the first time.  We encourage players to use server filters and “favorite” options to find the servers that best suit their play style. We have enormous respect for the Battlefield community and are listening to the feedback.  It is our #1 priority to ensure all players are having the best possible play experience.”

So, keep an eye out for more DICE servers in the coming days if that is your preferred way to play Battlefield 3. Don’t forget to check out our Battlefield 3 console server browser guide in order to find servers that best suit your needs.

Thanks, Examiner.

Rumor – MW2’s Terminal Coming to Modern Warfare 3 – MOAB, Super8, and More Leaked

Several leaks give us a glimpse into what the team  behind Modern Warfare 3 has in store for us in the coming months.

Well before the official announcement of Modern Warfare 3’s DLC plans for the month May, a user on the se7ensins forums, iHc James, outed the names of 12 upcoming DLC drops for Modern Warfare 3. At the time, we unable to verify the leak as iHc James didn’t publish any proof supporting his claim.

However,  six out of the seven leaked DLC names posted on May 4th were recently officially announced on May 9th. Only Face Off map, Lookout, is not listed below:

Spec Ops:

  • Iron Clad
  • Kill Switch
  • Terminal

Multiplayer:

  • Aground
  • Erosion
  • Getaway
  • Oasis
  • MOAB
  • Boardwalk
  • Nola
  • Theater
  • Super8

Terminal has popped up again after Reddit users DainBramage77 and DsmvwldCmmntr examined the latest PC patch, which was released along with Collection 1.

Here are their findings regarding Terminal:

Terminal's Loading Screen in Modern Warfare 3
Terminal Leaked in PC Patch

Interestingly, one of the most popular maps in Modern Warfare 2, Terminal, is listed under the Spec Ops section according to the first leak. As you may remember, Infinity Ward recently assured that all paid DLC coming to Modern Warfare 3 will not include old maps from MW2 or CoD4. This leaves us with two potential theories. Either Terminal has been re-made for Spec Ops, or will be released as a free map to all players.

In terms of the other DLC names, MOAB, Boardwalk, Nola, Theater, and Super8, these might be the internal code names, as Black Box was called at one point, Morning Wood.

The recently previewed May DLC drops have the following loading screens code names:

Oasis Loading Screen (code name Qadeem)
Lookout Loading Screen (code name RestRepo)
Gateway Loading Screen (code name Hillside)
Erosion Loading Screen (code name Courtyard)

Modern Warfare 3 is expected to receive the following in upcoming months (dates for Xbox 360, add one month for PS3):

  • May: Already announced
  • June: 1 Map, 1 Mission, 1 Classified piece of DLC
  • July: 2 Maps
  • August: 1 Map, 1 Mission, 1 Classified piece of DLC
  • September: 1 Map, 1 Mission

Infinity Ward Finds New Call of Duty Community Manager

At last, Infinity Ward, creators of the Call of Duty franchise and primary developers of the Modern Warfare series has found that lucky someone who will be taking up the role of IW Community Manager.

You may remember back in March when IW Creative Strategist Robert “FourZeroTwo” Bowling left Infinity Ward and Activision after working with them since 2006. Many argue that he became the face of the Modern Warfare series as many community members looked to him for news, events and general guidance within the Modern Warfare universe.

Today, Infinity Ward has hired IGN‘s Tina Palacios to take up the role as Senior Community Manager for the Call of Duty/Modern Warfare franchise. Being a “huge Call of Duty fan” herself, Tina has “been at the heart of the 1UP and IGN communities for several years now, injecting her unique brand of humor and passion into our sites, and breaking down the barriers between our internal editorial teams and our valued community members,” according to IGN.

We look forward to her presence within the Call of Duty community and wish her the best of luck!

You can follow Tina Palacios on Twitter here.

Thanks, CourtRoomGaming, for the tip!

Blizzard Releases Diablo III “Launch Day Preparation Guide”

We understand that the launch of Diablo III can be a bit too much to handle and so does Blizzard. After all, you’ve probably been waiting   over 11 years for this moment. That’s why Blizzard has put together this nifty guide on how to prepare for the launch of Diablo III on PC and Mac this May 15th.

Before reading, we want you to let us know in the comments below, what class will you first be playing as when Diablo III launches?

Without further ado, here is Blizzard’s “Launch Day Preparation Guide” as seen on Battle.net. You can thank us later.

Play Diablo III May 15th

Purchase the Game

If you haven’t already purchased Diablo III you can acquire it directly from Blizzard through the digital presale. You can also preorder the game at most major retailers and fine purveyors of high quality gaming products worldwide. If you’re interested in the Diablo® III Collector’s Edition, please be aware that this physical retail-only edition is printed in limited quantities, and has already sold out in most places that take preorders on games. We recommend calling around and checking if your local retailers will have the Collector’s Edition available.

Create Your BattleTag

We expect that on launch night both the game service and website will be under very heavy strain due to the immense number of people excited to begin playing Diablo III. With that in mind we highly recommend you create your BattleTag now, as it´s required to play Diablo III. Please keep in mind that this non-unique nickname is a permanent choice, and will display both in-game and on the website, so be sure to choose one you like! (What is a BattleTag?)

Regional Launch Times

As previously mentioned in the announcement of our midnight launch events, the launch time of the game is broken down by region.

For the European region, the game servers will go live at 00:01 CEST on May 15.

Digital Presale Download

If you’ve purchased a digital copy you can begin downloading your client right now, and we highly encourage you to do so. We also have a Diablo III presale visual guide available that may be helpful. As it may take you some time to download the full game, it’s best that you begin early. This may afford you additional time to troubleshoot any downloader or installer issues you may encounter.

Early Install

We will be unlocking the game’s installer at 17:01 CEST on May 14. This will allow you to begin installing the game, troubleshoot any issues you run into, download and install the launch day 1.0.1 patch, and be ready to play as soon as the servers come online.

Global Play Launch Time

We’ll be turning on Global Play when the game has launched in all regions. This means that you will not be able to play in a region outside your home region until after The Americas midnight launch at 09:01 CEST on May 15. We’ll provide an update once Global Play is enabled, and you’ll then be able to change the region you connect to through the game’s options. Please note that characters, items, and friends lists do not transfer across regions. Players who use Global Play to connect outside of their home region will only be able to access the gold-based auction house. More information can be found in our Global Play introduction article.

Launch Night Login

As we’ve unlocked the Diablo III installer early, many people will be ready to log in right when the servers go live at midnight, we’re going to be closely monitoring the impact on the service. It’s possible we’ll need to adjust the rate at which we’re logging people in to ensure a stable experience, and if we do you may see a delay when attempting to login. Please be aware that a delay of up to 40 seconds is possible while the game attempts to connect you. If your connection doesn’t succeed in 40 seconds, you’ll be presented with an Error 37 and asked to try again. If you see this error it does in fact mean that you should try again. We’ll be working around the clock to keep you informed of any issues that are occurring through the in-game breaking news window, as well as the official forums.

[Updated] Battlefield 3 – Battlefield Premium Leaked, More DLC, New “Bonus Content” and Double XP Weekend

Update 2: DICE has just announced on their official Facebook page that the double XP weekend will begin at 12:01am PST tonight (early Saturday morning):

Be Advised, Battlefield 3 players – This weekend we’ll be doubling every experience point that you earn on the Battlefield ranked servers. Every kill, assist, revive – you name it, it’s doubled.

At the conclusion of each match the bonus XP will be reflected as “Additional Points”. Double XP will be accrued across all ranked servers and matches.

See you on the Battlefield.

Update 1: A double XP weekend has been confirmed by Battlefield 3 German Community Manager, Andreas Koch.

Original Story: It looks like Battlefield fans can anticipate a very interesting month in the Battlefield 3 universe this June and beyond.

According to information we have received from reliable inside sources, we’ve learnt of a recent fact sheet that lists some interesting dates as well as some very interesting pieces of Battlefield 3 content that DICE and EA seem to have planned in the near future. On top of some extra “bonus content,” including the Close Quarters DLC and a player guide, can fans also expect a “Premium” service to bundle these content drops together?

Check out these release dates of upcoming pieces of Battlefield 3 content as listed on the fact sheet:

  • 04-06-2012 – Battlefield Premium
  • 12-06-2012 – Close Quarters
  • XX-06-2012 – Guide
  • XX-08-2012 – Bonus Content

Battlefield Premium: This doesn’t come as too much of a surprise, seeing that EA has toyed with the idea of a subscription-based service before. However, it’s not clear whether Battlefield Premium is actually a subscription-based service or if it is simply a one-time cost that will cover the content included in it. The official description reads:

Battlefield™ Premium will land you a number of content drops with unique in-game items not available anywhere else. First out is the one-of-a-kind Premium knife and black dog tag, plus a set of soldier camos, weapon camos, dog tags and Assignments that will make sure you stand out and get more personalization options.

If this comes to fruition, we can expect to learn more about it in the coming weeks before it releases June 4th, 2012.

Close Quarters: Close Quarters is DICE’s second Battlefield 3 expansion pack which will focus on tight, infantry-based combat and will include new 4 new maps as well as 10 new weapons and assignments. It will also feature the brand new game mode, Conquest Domination. You can check out the latest gameplay trailer “Donya Fortress” here. While most of this was known earlier, what has not yet been revealed is it’s release date. According to this fact sheet, we can expect Close Quarters to drop June 12th, 2012, meaning PS3 owners will get a head start on June 5th, 2012.

Guide: Sometime next month, Battlefield 3 players can “get the upper hand with this strategy guide, teaching you how to improve and become an even more skilled player.”

Bonus Content: Not much is known about this “bonus content,” other than it will be available some time in August, 2012. It’s official description reads, “enhance your Battlefield™ experience with this bonus content drop.”

March 2013 DLC: We were also told a 5th, unannounced expansion pack is to hit Battlefield 3 sometime in March, after DICE’s already announced End Game expansion.

Double XP: Additionally, it has also been revealed that starting tomorrow, May 12th, until Monday, May 14th, Battlefield 3 fans will be able to earn double the XP as they play throughout the weekend.

Though this news is unofficial at the moment, make sure to stay tuned to MP1st on Twitter and Facebook as we learn more!

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition Breaks Records and Proves Profitable in an Hour

Who would have known? Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition is a hit!

According to Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb, “Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has has broken all previous Xbox LIVE Arcade digital sales records, selling more than any other title in the first 24 hours on Xbox LIVE Arcade. I just looked at the leaderboards and there are over 400,000 people playing…so that will give you an idea at how well it is doing,” he recently posted on his official blog.

Perhaps even more interesting is that the game proved profitable for developers 4J Studios and Mojang within it’s first hour of release. Developer Markus “Notch” Persson recently tweeted, “well then. Saw the official sales numbers for the first 24 hours of Minecraft Xbox 360, and it’s very, very good. Profitable in an hour.”

This marks a very positive beginning to a game that is sure to tear real relationships apart and destroy all traces of productivity among any and all who own an Xbox 360. Nevertheless, congratulations to all involved in Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition’s release!

If you missed it, check out the latest multiplayer walkthroughs by Mojang and YJ Studios.

Battlefield 3 Dev Answers Your Questions: Suppressor and Foregrip Combo, Scope Effects, and Much More

Alan Kertz, Core Gameplay Designer on Battlefield 3, answers some of the more common questions that all BF3 players ought to know. In the latest issue of Inside DICE, he goes into the gritty details as he talks about the suppressor and foregrip attachment combo, the effects that a scope or sight has on a weapon, the SKS’s bullet drop, and the differences between the P90 and MP7 PDWs. We also get a quick look at his background and early work with DICE.

Leave some of your own questions in the comments below and we’ll make sure to send them DICE’s way to see if they can be answered! For now, enjoy this quick Q&A with BF3 Core Gameplay Designer Alan Kertz as seen on the latest issue of Inside DICE:

1. Where did you start before working for DICE?
(Asked by @minikanelive)
Alan answers: “I was actually quite lucky to enter the industry directly working for DICE on Battlefield 2142. Of course, I didn’t just start cold turkey, I’d previously been a member of the Battlefield 1942 modding community where I developed tools, levels, and mods. Some of my work was featured in mods like Eve of Destruction, Desert Combat, and Point of Existence. Scholastically my background is a Computer Science degree from a university in the US where I grew up. While the CS degree wasn’t a real influence on me getting the job, I do find that understanding the concepts of coding is a definitive edge when working as a game designer.”

2. SKS bullet drop is very pronounced. Bug or intended? It ruins my immersion whenever i see it.
(Asked by @shimme01)
Alan answers: “The SKS has a relatively low velocity round when compared to other DMR and Sniper weapons. Over the same distances the SKS round will drop further and lose more energy since it’s a smaller caliber round. The SKS is range limited, though it makes up for this by being mobile, fast firing, and deadly in mid-range. For longer range engagements I would step up to something like the M39 EMR or the QBU-88 sniper from Back to Karkand.”

3. In comparison to the P90, the MP7 is a bit outclassed. Maybe consider reducing the MP7′s first shot recoil and increasing the P90′s?
(Asked by @kryptikspaniard)
Alan answers: “The MP7 has a lower overall muzzle climb, a faster reload (especially from empty), and a higher rate of fire than the P90. Finally, the MP7 is rather easily obtained via COOP play, while the P90 comes later on at Rank40. Obviously they’re both similar weapons, and I feel the subtle differences between the two weapons makes it an interesting choice for players. Some players clearly prefer the P90, others prefer the MP7.”

4. Do scopes have an effect on vertical recoil? Didn’t know if the weight of the scope factored in? It’s not in the descriptions.
(Asked by @friedpixels)
Alan answers: “Another great question. Scopes only change two variables: how much zoom they provide and how fast the weapon aims down the sights. A high zoom scope, like a 6x rifle scope, will be slow, and a low zoom sight, like a red dot sight, will be fast. There are no additionally effects on the weapons’ handling, no changes to recoil or accuracy.”

5. So a gun that has just a suppressor and a sight has better aimed accuracy than one with a foregrip & suppressor?
(Asked by @KILLAnthonyMan)
Alan answers: “The short answer is Yes. The long answer is Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssssss. The explanation though, is more interesting. A foregrip carries a small aimed accuracy penalty, if you’re trying to get the best absolute accuracy you can with the weapon, a suppressor will give you better aimed accuracy. However, combining the Suppressor and the Foregrip will give the weapon the same accuracy as if you had no accessories, while also reducing recoil. It’s my recommendation that you only forgo a foregrip (see what I did there?) if you demand the absolute best accuracy you can obtain. Generally, inside 100m a weapon with a foregrip is still plenty accurate to hit consistently on target, and it will be easier to control.”

Crysis 3 Spring 2013 Release Confirmed, High-End PC Users Can Expect Some “Visual Goodies”

Crysis fans rest assured. While Crysis 3 will have some visual goodies exclusive to only high-end PC users, Crytek hasn’t forgotten about their console audience.

Recently, Crytek’s Rasmus Højengaard Spoke to Spong about the graphical capabilities of Crysis 3 on both PC and consoles and also touched on the PC community’s plead to have Crytek consider keeping the Crysis series exclusive to the PC.

As he jokingly put it, “PC players, fundamentally only want Crysis to be on PC, right? And, you know, that’s kind of understandable when you consider how the original game – and even Crytek itself – started out.” While the first Crysis was originally a PC exclusive, it did eventually make its way to Xbox Live the PlayStation Network last year, the same year that saw a multi-platform release of Crysis 2.

Højengaard assures PC gamers, “…we’re definitely pushing this game a lot from a visual standpoint, and for sure there’s going to be visual goodies in it that you can only get if you have a super-high-end PC.” However, “at the same time, we want to ensure if you don’t have a super-high-end PC, the game will still look amazing.”

Though the team has stated their intent to make Crysis 3 “the best looking game that’s ever been made,” Crytek hasn’t forgotten about consoles. Højengaard stressed, “…we want to make sure the experience is not different from platform to platform.”

Expect Crysis 3 to drop within the first quarter of 2013 as confirmed by a recent Electronic Arts financial report.

Battlefield 3 – DICE Hasn’t Forgotten About Esports, More on Battlerecorder and Spectator Mode

Some fans feel that DICE has been ignoring the competitive community as it’s been some time that Esport goers, and even casual gamers alike, have requested a spectator mode or Battlerecorder in order to monitor competitive matches. While it may seem this way, Daniel Matros, global community manager at DICE, stresses in a recent AMA on Reddit, “I’ve been pushing and advocating esports ever since I started out 2 years ago.” He adds, “I wouldn’t say ignored the competitive community. We went balls out on Dreamhack and said that we are aiming for esports.”

Many would argue that Battlefield 3 was partly advertised post-launch as having the capabilities to become a competitive title and that DICE failed to keep their word. Matros explains that “that is why it is very important to stick with what you say.” He’d also like fans to know, “things we say are never with worst intentions. Some things get left behind in a long dev process and get re-evaluated. That is why information can be pretty scarce at times.”

When it comes to updating the game to accomodate the Esports community, Matros mentions, “if we decided that some other things need more experimenting and fixing we will go ahead and do those. Adding in features later in a game is expected these days in the gaming industry. We’ve got esporters here in the studio though. I come from that background, Niklas Fegraeus, Gustav Halling, Tim Kjell and I’m sure more people are into it.”

Speaking about the much sought after spectator mode, Matros reveals that “spectator has been discussed internally a lot as well.” However, he continues, “we aren’t confident with rolling out things that will intentionally break the game. Let’s face it, we had a long dev process for the [Frostbite 2] engine and the game and a lot of things were in the brighter light than spectator, such as making a great game for the majority of the players. I agree with the fact that spectator would be great to have though!”

Last month, we learned that DICE does, indeed, have a functional Battlerecorder within the studio. However, it is primarily being used as a marketing video editor for the time being. This was recently cemented even further when marketing video editor at EA, Randy Evans, recently tweeted, “I’m not gonna lie, Battlerecorder is so much f*cking fun to use.” Allegedly, the only issue holding it back that it is currently, “useless junk,” in the words of one DICE employee. Meaning, it simply isn’t ready or functional enough to be released to the public.

It’s clear that DICE has the competitive community in mind. The question is, when will these goals materialize in Battlefield 3. As Matros recently stated, “what we’ve seen over the past year is that Esports is ganing a lot of ground, especially in Europe after a few years and it’s still rising.” He also reveals that there are still plans in store for the competitive community, mentioning that “the BF3 road hasn’t ended yet you know. We still have some content ready for release in forms of DLC´s and will also update the game going forward.”

Do you still hope for Battlefield 3’s entrance into the Esports universe, or do you look to other games for your competitive fix?
