BF3 – Next Update to “Improve Jet vs Heli vs Ground balance,” DICE Dev Defends Bolt-Action Changes

Senior Gameplay Designer, Alan Kertz, defends his decision to give bolt-action rifles the ability to one-hit-kill in the chest at close range and reveals what balance issues he’s considered.

First, Kertz clarified the range at wich this new change will be effective when a fan asked if the upper chest 1-shot kill will be the same as the 870’s 1-shot slug kill range. He replied, “indeed the range is the same.” Kertz believes this change should help keep all weapons balanced since, at the moment, Battlefield 3 “is faster up close. All other guns are deadlier since BC2 except snipers,” according to Kertz. To keep thing in perspective, he added that bolt-actions also have “abysmal hip accuracy, horrifically low fire rate, and the requirement to hit a small target. I’ve just made it bigger.” This seems like a fair adjustment, but nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how the community responds to it once the change has taken place.

Recently, Kertz compiled a list of bolt-action rifle and other future updates which went into detail regarding changes to vehicles and the balance between them, on top of outlining more reasons for the change to bolt-action rifles. Regarding this list, Kertz would like to say “thanks to the Community for some great feedback.” He added that “the next update should have much improved Jet vs Heli vs Ground balance,” something we can all look forward to since vehicle warfare is a huge component to the Battlefield 3 experience.

Twisted Metal – Multiplayer The Main Focus and DLC Hints

David Jaffe emphasizes the importance of multiplayer in Twisted Metal and hints at DLC.

Jaffe states that the multiplayer is and always will be the main focus of the Twisted Metal series with single-player being more of a compliment to the game. Although he does go on to say that the single player and co-op modes of the new game are far more interesting and varied than any previous Twisted Metal game, but “it [single-player] is not Batman or GTA, and it was never designed to be.”

When asked about Mr. Twister and Slam, which were playable characters in past Twisted Metal games, he went on to say that those character will not be in the final rosters. He did however hint that they would possibly be the first DLC vehicle packs, but only after they see how well the game does, otherwise there is currently no planned DLC.

Be sure to read more about Twisted Metal maps.

Battlefield 3 CM Congratulates Modern Warfare 3 for “Best Shooter” Award

Daniel Matros’ reaction to Modern Warfare 3 winning the VGA’s best shooter of the year.

Last night, Modern Warfare 3 pipped Battlefield 3 to win the VGA’s best shooter of the year. Battlefield 3’s global community manager, Daniel Matros, congratulated Modern Warfare 3 for winning the award. He went on to say that Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games “made one hell of a game.” However, in Matros’ “heart and mind” Battlefield 3 is “still number one.” Matros must be glad that he dodged a tea-bagging. It should be noted that neither shooter was nominated for the game of the year category, and Skyrim snagged that trophy. On the multiplayer front, Portal 2 was the winner against the two FPS games mentioned above and Gears 3.

BF3: Bolt Action Rifles Can 1HK at Close Range – DICE Reveals Future Balance Updates Pt. 2

A while back, Senior Gameplay Designer, Alan Kertz, revealed a list of future updates that was compiled with community feedback in mind. Recently, a second list has been revealed with a hefty number of balance tweaks that may or may not be making it into future patches. Of course, the biggest change of note is that “bolt action sniper rounds now have a chance to kill at close range if the player is hit in the upper chest.”

Why are we making this change?

  • Aggressive Recon was a popular (and controversial) play style in BFBC2, the fact that the playstyle is essentially not present in BF3 has been a disappointment to many players.
  • The balance issues of BC2 (Magnum ammo increasing the 1 hit kill range) is not present in BF3, the range is set and cannot be improved by players. Additionally the 1 hit kill is not guaranteed in BF3, the target is small and can be blocked by the player’s arms.
  • Additionally, all kits have access to the Slug shotguns, the 870 pump with slugs is still far superior to a bolt action rifle at close range. It is faster, and it can hit anywhere in the torso to 1 hit kill, though it lacks the accuracy of the snipers at range.
  • Finally, Recon is under represented in the game, especially in CQB game modes, giving the Recon player a place in CQB is important to us as developers.

And yes, for those of you who follow me on Twitter, I changed my mind. I hope this change pleases the Recon players, and I believe it will not negatively impact the game for the rest of you.
-Alan “Demize99” Kertz

It’s important to note:

  • This list is provided as a way for the Community to give us feedback on potential Balance changes to the game.
  • This list is specifically focused on Balance changes. Feature requests and bug fixes are purposefully absent from this list.
  • There is no guarantee that any of these Balance changes will make it into a future update at all, nor is this list a guarantee that there will be future updates.

Slightly increased the AEK971 recoil.
Slightly increased the ASVAL recoil.
Added Extended Mags to the ASVAL.
Slightly increased the recoil on the M249.
Reduced the recoil of the SKS rifle.
Fixed aimed firing max accuracy on the Pecheneg to be consistent with other LMGs.
Slightly reduced the recoil of the F2000 and restored it to the previous base accuracy.
Semiautomatic and automatic shotguns firing FRAG rounds now do slightly less splash damage.
Increased the damage of the G3, M60, and M240 at close range.

Claymores can now detonate from vehicles and can be used to disable jeeps or kill the passengers in light jeeps. Claymores will not do any damage to heavy vehicles.
Reduced the spot times on C4 and Claymore projectiles from 30 to 15 sec.
The Radio Beacon, Mortar, Mav, EOD bot, T-UGS, and SOFLAM should now be much easier to deploy.
C4 will no longer be detonatable after a player respawns, if the player is revived within 5 seconds he can still detonate his C4.
The player may now have a maximum number of mines which will persist after the player’s death. Deploying more than the maximum of 6 mines will remove a previous mine from the world.
Claymores now also persist through death, the player can have 2 claymores planted.

9x39mm rounds no longer benefit from the Sniper headshot bonus.
Increased the damage of the 9x39mm rounds.
Fixed the AKS74u damage at max range, it was incorrectly higher than other carbines.
Increased the damage of the .357 and .44 magnum rounds at max range.
All semiautomatic and bolt weapons, including all shotgun slugs, now have their maximum damage out to 15m.
Semiautomatic sniper rifles, Assault Rifles, LMGs, and shotgun slugs now have more consistent damage over long range.

Tweaked IRNV to be more consistent across all levels.
Fixed a rendering issue with IRNV view when taking damage.
Tweaked the IRNV zoom times and scope visible areas to be the same across all weapons (some were faster than others).
Fixed the QBU-88 sniper and the L96 IRNV scopes to use the proper aiming reticule.

The spread for Flechette rounds has been reduced slightly on all shotguns.
The spread for buckshot has been reduced on the M1014, DAO-12, and S12k. These weapons have an accuracy advantage over the USAS12 but are not as accurate as the 870.

Semiautomatic weapons will no longer “jam” if the player presses fire faster than the weapon is capable of shooting. Some semi automatic weapons have had their rates of fire adjusted to fit this change.

Slightly reduced the effective blast radius of the RPG, SMAW, and 40mm grenade projectiles against infantry.
Reduced the total number of RPG and SMAW missiles carried from 5 to 4.

Tank rounds will now instantly destroy Jets, Attack Helicopters, and Scout Helicopters.
Fixed a problem when locking on to two nearby targets, the locking should no longer jump rapidly between multiple targets.
Significantly increased the damage of the Javelin and Air to Ground missiles against laser designated targets.
Javelin missiles fired without laser targeting now do more damage to the side and rear of MBTs.
Slightly reduced the locking time of all weapons vs Laser Designated targets.
Increased the locking distance for Jets when locking on laser designated targets.
Slightly reduced the repair speed of the repair tool.
Increased the damage the MBT’s primary weapon does to other main battle tanks.

Adjusted the F35’s Center of Mass and Lift Engine for more stable, level flight.
Updated the F35 weapon systems to be consistent with the other air craft.
Changed the Kornets to TOW launchers on Wake Island and moved the spawn position of the AAV to a more level position.
Fixed several bugs with air vehicles colliding with objects at high speeds and taking no damage.
Players will no longer receive suicides or team kills if they crash their vehicle (dying is punishment enough).
You can now spot with the EODbot.

Increased the spawn protection time from 1sec to 2sec. The protection will still be immediately canceled as soon as the player moves or shoots.
Spawn protection will no longer be canceled by the player looking around.
Slightly increased the speed at which a player can shoot again after sprinting.
Fixed some situations that would unintentionally make a player unrevivable.
Reduced the black screen fade in time on spawn.

Twisted Metal – David Jaffe On Maps, Possible EU Release Date, And Demo

David Jaffe has just revealed a number of new details about the new upcoming Twisted Metal game.

First thing first: the Europe release date. Although Jaffe isn’t 100% sure about the date, he states that Europe should be receiving the game by February 16th, which is just two days after the North America release date. He also confirmed that there will be a demo for the game, but the date is still to be announced along with whether it will be a single player or a multiplayer demo.

Here are some brand new details on the maps of Twisted Metal:

  • The game will be packed with 8 large maps, which can be broken down into 22 sub-maps, bringing the total to 30 different varieties.
  • One of the maps is the Suburbs. This is just one of the 8 larger maps, which has a sub map titled GRINDHOUSE. This takes place inside a movie theater, which according to David Jaffe, was designed for close quarter combat and to bring you some old school feelings. This map even supports 16 players.
  • The pick-ups in each sub-maps are very unique compared to the larger maps. This is most likely due to the sizes of each map. I will assume that this means that pick-ups in the GRINDHOUSE are designed for closer range, while on the larger version of it, you’ll have weapons design for long range.
  • 2 Player versus supported on all 30 maps
  • 4 player split-screen only gets around 7-9 maps because not all maps could support all 4 players.
Stay tuned to MP1st for more details on great multiplayer games! Follow us on Twitter and Facebook!

You Think You Want a CoD4 Remake, But You Don’t – Treyarch Dev Talks Innovation

Recently, David Vonderhaar, Game Design Director at Treyarch, opened up a dialogue with fans revealing what kind of thinking goes into developing a Call of Duty game.

It goes without saying that the Call of Duty franchise has millions of players who play online, 0ver 30 million, to be more accurate. With as much praise as these developers are receiving for building such a popular game, there is most likely an equal if not greater amount of criticism they must face every day. With this many CoD fans, there is bound to be more than a few who are likely to share what they think the game should be like, legitimate or not, in an extremely vocal matter, negative or positive. Vonderhaar, who recently directed last year’s Black Ops, admits that when building a CoD game, it takes much more than just implementing what the fans want.

Vonderhaar put it very nicely while quoting Henry Ford: “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.” Simply put, fans don’t always know exactly what they want. It’s the job of developers to figure out precisely what they are trying to express. Vonderhaar states, “I always ask you what you want and the problems you have so I can always put in context. And I always will.” He continued, “if we aren’t trying every day to give you the thing you don’t yet know you want, then I don’t deserve this job.” It sounds like a daunting task, but Vonderhaar believes in innovation.

If we are to be completely honest here, we know what a good number of Call of Duty fans always “say” they want the “next” CoD to be like: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. “COD4 was a great game; we stand on the shoulders of giants. Some of you want to relive that,” said Vonderhaar. However, he truthfully added that “it would be neither innovation or evolution.” It can be speculated that the reason why fans request such a thing is because for many, CoD4 was their “first” CoD experience. Your first experience in almost anything tends to be the most memorable. However, Voderhaar reminds us that “you can make new ‘firsts’ and if don’t go for that as hard as possible then we shouldn’t be here.”

Speaking of the “next” Call of Duty, check out Treyarch on Tweaks for Black Ops and “Next” Call of Duty

While the Call of Duty franchise has been criticized recently for lacking innovation, Vonderhaar assures us that, “as a game maker, a re-make or a do-over doesn’t inspire me. We must have have bigger goals than solving a few design flaws.” Could Treyarch’s next game be a step in the right direction, breaking the series free of being labeled as simple “re-skins” of past titles? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Modern Warfare 3 – Improving Lag Compensation, Banning Boosters and Cheaters

Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling touches on lag compensation, boosters, and more.

Lag Compensation Misconception

Let’s start this off with the biggest issue at hand. One fan insulted Robert Bowling for including the “lag compensation” system, which on paper should iron out network latency, in Modern Warfare 3. The fan thought that “lag compensation” holds back players with better connections. However, Bowling pointed out “that is not how it works, it’s a misconception. No one is ever throttled based on connection.” He went on to briefly explain the concept, “it eliminates host advantage that used to be given to compensate for host processing more than clients.” Luckily, Bowling promised “we’re looking at how we can improve that [lag compensation] based on feedback.”

Boosters and Cheaters

One breed of players that Infinity Ward is paying special attention to is boosters. As you might have noticed on the leaderboards, some players are definitely boosting. Don’t fret it, MW3’s security team is onto them as Bowling assures that IW is addressing boosters, and he explained that if push comes to shove, IW has the ability to “prevent them [boosters] from ever writing to the leaderboards again”. On the topic of cheaters on PC, he assured that the security team has “done massive bans on PC already and will continue to do so.” Meanwhile, the prestige tokens are not “being assigned properly or used properly” for some players. This issue is being looked into and might be addressed on IW’s backend.

New Battlefield 3 User Interface In Development?

PC gamers playing Battlefield 3 may be in for a real treat soon as DICE begins work on a new user interface.

Over at the official Battlefield 3 forums, BF3’s community manager, Daniel Matros, dropped by to let the community know that DICE is searching for the person who did the concept UI screens. This includes both the spawn UI and the Commo Rose set-up. It’s unknown as to which person he’s referring to, but I’m sure any PC gamer would agree that most of the fan concept arts released so far are better then the current UI.

Whether or not they are actually going to update the PC UI as requested by many forum posters is not known, but this certainly is a good sign.

Here are just some of the fan created concepts that have been released so far:

BF3 – Big Changes Coming To Comrose, Ammo and Medic Commands Being Added

DICE’s VO Producer Tomas Danko has given PC Battlefield 3 players an insight on what the updated Comrose will feature.

In the recent PC patch, Dice added the ability to hear CommoRose over the radio. This was a highly requested feature that was seen in Battlefield 2, and luckily it doesn’t end there. Tomas Danko informs PC gamers that there would be some big changes coming to CommoRose, even dubbing it as “comrose 2.0” that will soon be included “in a patch near you.” The patch that will “update comrose big time” is going to be distributed shortly.”

Though there isn’t a whole lot of information on what exactly has been changed, we do know that two new commands, request ammo and medic, will be added in the soon to be released update.

MW3 – Robert Bowling Defends Deathstreaks and Talks DLC

When it comes to the Modern Warfare series of the Call of Duty franchise, one of the biggest and most controversial issues lies with Infinity Ward’s (and now Sledghammer’s) decision to include deathstreaks in their games. Quickly, for those who don’t know, deathstreaks are in-game rewards, like faster sprint or more bullet damage for a short period of time, that a player receives for dying a certain number of times in a row. It was initially meant as a way to help out new players to the Call of Duty franchise or FPSs in general, but a large number of fans believe that is simply does not belong in a game like Modern Warfare 3.

When fans looked to Creative Strategist, Robert Bowling, saying that deathstreaks are a frustrating part of their CoD experience, he responded, “I agree but its a feature that is appreciated by an equally as large user base. One of those things.” While it may not seem like it, Bowling assures us that “many people reach out to express their appreciation for deathstreaks, helping them back into the fight.” Of course, Infinity Ward has listened to fan feedback in the past and removed infamous perks like Stopping Power and Last Stand, though they do appear in one form or another as deathstreaks in their latest title. When asked why the teams behind MW3 decided to remove Last Stand, yet keep Final Stand (the deathstreak version of the perk), Bowling simply responded, “Because Last Stand could happen every death, where Final Stand only happens after doing extremely poorly for a while in a row.”

Of course, it can be a monumental task to try to please everyone, especially when you “have 30 million people who play COD games online,” according to Bowling.

On a lighter note. Bowling also took some feedback for DLC ideas. One fan asked if they would ever consider releasing a free DLC that strictly included Modern Warfare 2 maps. Bowling answered, “Personally, I would love that! I miss my old favorites, but no DLC announcements yet. I’ll let you know when its final.” Click here to read about the rumored DLC.

Dare we ask? What is your opinion on deathstreaks in the Modern Warfare series? Let us know in the comment section below! Make sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook!

BF3 – DICE Responds to PS3 Exclusivity, No 5-Flag Wake Island on Consoles, and More

With the recent release of Back to Karkand on PS3 a week earlier than the Xbox 360 and PC, some fans have gotten up-in-arms over the issue of exclusivity. Gameplay Designer on Battlefield 3, Gustav Halling, weighs in on the situation, simply saying, “Xbox got COD, Sony signed us, thats the way of the economical world we live in.” This is obviously Sony’s attempt to level the playing field, what with Microsoft striking a deal with Activision in order for Xbox 360 players to receive recent Call of Duty map packs a full month earlier than other platforms. It seems like a fair move on Sony’s part, but with such a big hit title like Battlefield 3, it’s easy to see why everyone wants to get their hands on the expansions right away.

Some of you may remember DICE confirming that all Back to Karkand maps would have 3 and 5-flag conquest variants on console. Unfortunately, the recent release of this new expansion has proven that this is not so. In the case of the beloved Battlefield 2 map, Wake Island, where many fans are used to battling over the traditional 5 flags, it has many console players upset that only 3-flags have been included. Gustav Halling explains, “We tried it, Wake, 5 flags, 24 players=1on1 at the flags. The other maps have 2 setups for console. BF43 Wake was 25% smaller.” So, apparently, the Battlefield 1943 version of Wake Island was 25% smaller, meaning it was more feasible to have 5 flags with 24 players. When asked why console players simply didn’t get the 25% smaller version of Wake Island, Halling responded, “If you want smaller maps play BF1943, BF3 is about epic warfare.”

Fortunately, it seems like we might see some changes that many fans have been asking for in the near future. When asked if it would eventually be possible to play on the same map twice, switching sides after each round of a game-type, Halling answered, “it’s coming but requires a backend restart. So, next planned maintenance. So, next week tuesday as the latest.” It’s only fair that teams are allowed a chance at payback!

Let us know your thoughts in the comment section. What do you think about these “exclusivity” deals? Are you upset Wake Island doesn’t have 5 flags on console? Would you prefer switching sides after each round in Battlefield 3? Also, make sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook!

New Xbox Live Update Problems – Suggested Solutions

UPDATE: After a couple restarts, our updates have been successfully installed and we are able to connect to Live. This seems to be the case in North America. However, some readers in Europe are still experiencing difficulties (thanks J.A!). By the looks of it, the teams behind Xbox Live are working on the matter and slowly but surely ironing things out.

Updated your Xbox 360 console recently? If so, chances are you may not be able to play online at the moment.

Microsoft recently released a brand new Xbox Live update that drastically changes the layout of the dashboard and adds some new features here and there. Unfortunately, thing’s aren’t going over so smoothly and many gamers are experiencing issues either trying to connect to Live, or even trying to download the update.

We’ve done some testing ourselves as well. Personally, I was told the update was unable to be downloaded. After clicking ‘OK,’ it began downloading (…I know). My system reset and began updating until I once again received the same error as before. Upon restarting my console. The update seemed successfully installed, however I still am unable to connect to xbox live, despite having aslo restarting my modem/router as suggested. Some staff aren’t even able to download the update at all.

Xbox Support had this to say so far: “Not a glitch, VERY busy servers.” They’ve suggested trying to “Reboot your console, reset your modem and router and try again.” Also, “be sure to accept the new Terms of Service.” They added, “The issue is being looked into. You’ll love the new features.” Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb also had this to say: “Some Xbox LIVE members are getting a connection error when signing in to LIVE. We are aware of the issue and the team is working it!”

Let us know in the comments if you too are experiencing issues with the new Xbox Live update.

Modern Warfare 3 – “Spawn Logic” Looked Into, “No Shotgun Buffs” and Much More

Robert Bowling, a.k.a. Four Zero Two, shed some light on several issues troubling the Call of Duty community.

The Spawn System and Matchmaking

On the heels of yesterday’s new patch announcement, which included what Infinity Ward is working on beyond the patch, Robert Bowling responds to fan feedback. A few weeks ago, we reported on how players living in smaller countries are experiencing matchmaking issues. Robert further explained that contrary to what some think, “there is no Region Lock, but clearly weighted matchmaking is causing some unpredictable restrictions that we’re looking into.” With regards to the current spawn system, he stated that Infinity Ward is “discussing improvements [that can be] potentially made to the spawn logic on certain maps and game modes.”

In my opinion, Infinity Ward/Sledgehammer Games should prioritize their work on matchmaking and spawn logic as these two issues, along with lag compensation, are hindering our experience that most. What do you think?

Type 95, CM901, and Shotguns

One assault rifle that is considered a standout in its class is the Type 95. The gun is arguably one of the best weapons in the game. That’s the reason why it’s going to be “rebalanced”. Robert assured that the gun “will still have power, but could use a little tweaking, especially at close range.” When asked by a fan on whether Infinity Ward is planning on tweaking the shotguns, Bowling explained that “no shotgun buffs planned currently”, but he reassured that the team behind MW3 is “always discussing weapon balancing and future updates.” Last but not least, the CM901 is not going to be nerfed per se, the only change is fixing the exploit when a grenade launcher or an under-barrel shotgun is attached to increase the  fire rate. Be sure to check the other tweaks currently in discussion.

If you haven’t yet, check out the complete list of patch notes here. Interestingly, a few changes that have taken place in-game did not make it into this recent list of fixes. Fortunately for us, reddit user forkkkd has compiled a list of these hidden changes that you may or may not be aware of.

So far I’ve come across a few changes that I am pretty sure were not in the changelog, post any you find here ^

Workaround for PS3 Back to Karkand Issues and 360 BF3 Patch Dated

DICE’s Daniel Matros has suggested a temporary fix for PS3 Back to Karkand issues and dated the Xbox 360 patch.

In case you’ve been having trouble joining games taking place on Back to Karkand maps, then you might have better luck joining through quick match instead of the server browser, which keeps bringing up vanilla BF3 maps. Fortunately, this is a temporary issue that DICE is going to address at some point. Matros explained “at the moment, they´re included in the map rotation with vanilla [maps]”. He went on to reassure that this will be fixed “eventually. We need to see how many users etc, before we make a decision on that. We´re on the ball though”

Matros also confirmed that the Xbox 360 patch is “coming in on the 13th” along with Back to Karkand for PC and Xbox. If you want to learn more about the upcoming patch for the 360, read PS3’s fix list, which should be similar.

Update: Back to Karkand PSN Release times:

  • Out in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.
  • Will go live in North Amercia between 5 PM and 9 PM EST.
  • Japan (Asia) will be able to download it tomorrow around 3 PM JST
