Sea of Stars Upcoming Update for November “Dawn of Equinox” Announced, Here’s What to Expect

Sabotage Studio has announced that the hit indie RPG Sea of Stars is getting a major patch this November! Called the “Dawn of Equinox” patch, this will bring a host of new features to the game, and all for free!

Players can expect it to be released on November 12 on consoles and PC, and the studio states this is their “gift” to thank the five million players who bought Seas of Stars.

Sea of Stars “Dawn of Equinox” Features:

  • All-New Local Co-op: Sea of Stars’ story will be playable in its entirety by up to three players, with allies traversing the world together and mastering a new Co-op Timed Hits combat mechanic.
  • Combat 2.0: The addition of Mystery Locks brings a new gameplay loop around revealing the ways to break the spells of enemies each time a new type is encountered in battle. Along with “Reveal” functions added to some of the playable cast’s special skills, Combo Points now remain after battle, offering new ways to open certain encounters, or test different damage types on enemies to reveal their locks. A comprehensive balancing pass has also been done to reflect both these new changes and player feedback since launch.
  • A Revamped Prologue: Implementing combat for the young versions of our heroes, the updated flow does away with the flashback structure to begin in their childhood, directly including action in the prologue.
  • Bonus Cinematic Scene: An entirely new cutscene has been added to accentuate a pivotal moment in the original adventure, referred to as “Paths on Water.”
  • A Speedrunner Mode Relic: This new item activates a range of features helpful for those looking to set a new personal best or world record.
  • Difficulty Presets: Three difficulty options are now available when starting a new game, which are presets using the game’s Relics. New Relics have also been added, both for quality of life and difficulty adjustments.
  • Improved Parrot Relic: Sea of Stars’ secret-tracking parrot has learned a few new tricks to better assist players tracking down overlooked challenges and collectibles.
  • Quebecois Localization: A comprehensive French Canadian translation for Quebec’s finest Solstice Warriors.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: A constellation of general updates and improvements spanning Sea of Stars’ full campaign.

Sea of Stars came out of nowhere in August of last year, and surprised people with its old-school engrossing gameplay. Our review of it can be read here, where we state, “Sea of Stars will take any seasoned gamer back to a simpler times, when the games were colorful, flat, and lengthy. If you want a turn-based RPG that is easy to pick up and yet quite challenging, then you’ll want to check out Sea of Stars.”

PS5 Pro Still Hasn’t Sold Out in the US and UK

Sony’s upcoming console, the PlayStation 5 Pro, is still widely available for pre-order in the US and UK. Even though Sony officially opened pre-orders on September 26, the new PS5 Pro has not sold out. This comes as a surprise to many people, as Sony’s previous hardware has typically been hard to find after pre-orders go live.

As spotted by Tom Warren on X/Twitter, the PS5 Pro is still available on PlayStation Direct in the US and UK. Despite the excitement surrounding the release of this upgraded console, many factors seem to have contributed to its availability. One major point is its price, which is set at $699.99. Many fans have voiced their frustration about the PS5 Pro not having a disc drive, which could be another reason for the lower demand.

Although the limited 30th Anniversary Edition of the PS5 Pro sold out in minutes, the nomal version is still available for pre-order. This slower demand is surprising, especially compared to previous PlayStation releases, which usually sold out quickly after pre-orders opened.

Buyers also seem unsure whether the PS5 Pro offers enough value for its price, as Sony hasn’t clearly explained the console’s benefits, causing many to question if the upgrade is worth it. The console will improve the resolution and frame rate of many games, but it hasn’t captured attention as strongly as previous PlayStation devices. Of course, the PS5 Pro not selling out immediately isn’t a sign that the console has ‘failed,” as it’s not available at retail just yet. Perhaps the demand isn’t as strong as some might not have expected, which sometimes happen.

The PS4 Pro also had a slow start during its pre-orders, but it eventually made up about 20% of all PS4 sales, reaching around 23-24 million units. If the PS5 Pro follows a similar path, it could see a big boost in sales over time. With the official release date set for November 7, there is still plenty of time for pre-orders to increase and for demand to pick up.

PS5 New UI Update Also Brought Ads You Can’t Turn Off and Unwanted Forced News Feed to Select Titles

Just this month, Sony rolled out a new PS5 system firmware update that introduced the Welcome Hub alongside other features. One of good things about the Welcome Hub is that players can customize what they see in it, and you can even configure preferences that will prevent ads from showing up.

However, it seems there is a limitation to that, as even if you opt out of ads, you will still see various news related items cluttering your dashboard that are either ads, or basically what Sony wants you to see.

Based on our testing, it indeed does happen. One example is Horizon, and hovering over it shows an ad for LEGO Horizon Adventures:

The ad also make sit confusing a bit, as based on the screenshot above, it looks like you’re playing LEGO Horizon Adventures and not the actual Horizon game we’re on.

It seems players will see will be different based on each game. So it can be an ad for one game, and maybe a news bit for another one. Here’s what Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will look like based on our captured image:

As you can see, there is a video being promoted by Sony. While this is a first-party feature from the company, it is still an ad.

There is a way to turn it off, but it’s probably not something you want to do. Now for those wanting to get their original backgrounds, the only method that we’ve been able to discover is by disconnecting from the internet entirely, as it will no longer force the news feed onto your console. This will give you access to those original backgrounds again, though obviously you can’t play online anymore until you reconnect again.

Based from our understanding, there is no way to control this or remove it completely while playing online.

Note that this is something gamers have noticed as well, and have aired out about it recently too.

Apparently, it’s not ads per se, but it seems like the official news feed of the games that Sony has is what shows up. This is made evident in another “ad” that shows an outdated content drop:

This isn’t just for third-party titles, as even Sony’s own Gran Turismo 7 features it too (it’s showing players a game update that was released three months ago).

Prior to this Welcome screen update, console owners could control what games they followed in terms of news feed, which would be displayed on the explore tab (now replaced with the Welcome tab). The function to opting out of following games does still exist, via hitting the three dots options next to the “Play Game” button on each individual game. However, whereas before the function would stop displaying that particular game’s news feed in the explore menu, it appears to do nothing here, as regardless if you follow a game for news or not, the system will still display the feed over the title’s original background.

Update (Sept.30): Sony has announced that this was apparently a “bug” and has since been resolved. We’ll be monitoring it and will provide updates if needed.

Death Stranding 2 Releases Sometime in 2025; “Photo Shoot” Feature Revealed

As part of Tokyo Game Show 2024, Hideo Kojima showcased the latest look at Death Stranding 2: On the Beach with a special show showcasing some of the game’s new characters, and more.

Unfortunately, one of the things we were looking forward to — the Death Stranding 2 release date — wasn’t revealed. Kojima reiterated that they are still aiming for a 2025 release window, and confirmed the release date will be announced next year as well stating, “While we haven’t announced the release date yet, we naturally already have one set. The plans are in place. Although production is progressing towards that goal, there are various factors that could affect the timing of the release… We’ve said 2025, so it will come out next year. The release date will be announced sometime next year.”

While Kojima introduced a new set of characters that will be appearing in Death Stranding 2 at the event, there’s also a new feature revealed called “Photo Shoots.” This is different from the game’s Photo Mode. Basically, this is a way for players to photograph the characters in the game with an instant camera where the characters can pose in different ways on their own.

I’m not much for pictures, but the graphics during this Photo Shoot thing look absolutely insane.

If you want to watch the entire broadcast, it’s available below.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is scheduled for release sometime in 2025 exclusively for the PS5.

Sony Says They’re Cultivating a Corporate Gaming Culture Emphasizing DE&I

It’s no secret that comics. movies and other forms of entertainment are focusing on DE&I (diversity, equity & inclusion), and that includes gaming. For Sony, it’s not just for the games themselves, but even in the development process, the company is pushing for it too.

In Sony’s Corporate Report for 2024, under the Game & Network Services section, Sony listed the “Areas of Focus for Sustainability” which had the following key points listed:

Areas of Focus for Sustainability
DE&I/Accessibility/Environment/Responsible Supply Chain

  • Cultivating a corporate culture that emphasizes DE&I
  • Ensuring broad accessibility functions of hardware, controllers, and game titles, with development of dedicated peripherals
  • Improving energy efficiency across hardware and network services; continuing to reduce plastic use in packaging
  • Addressing environmental and human rights risks in the context of global supply chains

Bear in mind, this is not new, as more and more companies across the world are pushing for a wider inclusivity net when it comes to employees. Hopefully, this leads to a deeper talent pool, which would mean we get better games in the long run.

In terms of games, Sony has also been at the forefront of this as well, as not only do we have Aloy as the protagonist of the multi-million selling Horizon franchise, but even Ghost of Tsushima’s sequel — Ghost of Yotei — is now starring a strong female lead. While some might have a problem with this, I don’t mind it as long as the developers can execute on their vision, and the game’s fun.

EA Announces “In Place Updates” Patching Tech for Games, Reduces Disk Errors by 60%

Whether you like it or not, patching games have been a necessity in today’s gaming landscape, and that’s regardless if it’s a single-player game, multiplayer title or somewhere in between. It’s a not just a way for devs to slot in new features and content, but also to fix bugs and other adjustments, However, the file sizes of these patches have become bigger and bigger to the point that they’re getting to be a pain in the ass download and install. This is something Electronic Arts (EA) is aware of, and the company has done something about it with the introduction of “In Place Updates.”

EA has worked with Senior Software Engineer Hans van Veenend and his team to launch a “revolutionary piece of engineering” which the company calls “Known Version Patching” back in March. This has helped in radically reducing patch times and even costs. Since then, the tech has evolved with a new update that is known as “In Place Updates” (IPU), which is currently already running for most games on the EA App and helps players avoid the annoying “Out of Disk Space Error” issues.

When patching games, if the file needed to be downloaded was bigger than the allocated disk space a use had, they would get hit with a Disk Error message. The only wait to solve this is by the user deleting something on their disk drive, uninstall games or in some cases, the user doesn’t do anything about it at all and just move on.

According to Software Engineer Kenny Chen, ““We monitor the user experience through telemetry data, and we found that more than 60 percent of errors that occur during an update are disk space errors…In fact, our data showed over the course of a month that if someone had a Disk Space Error, they would likely hit it two or three more times that same month.”

In Place Updates avoids this problem by applying an algorithm that preserves unchanged content between game updates without creating temporary files and downloads the updated data directly into the target files. One example is: before, a 100MB patch that would previously create a huge 10GB temporary file, is no longer required to do so. Chen notes that their goal was to reduce disk space errors by 60%, and in doing with games with larger patch sizes, they are seeing a near 100% reduction (elimination) of disk space errors for players. Prior to the IPU tech, EA saw that well over half of their players had problems installing game updates because of the size. The publisher notes that with patch sizes getting smaller, the time it takes to download and install them is much shorter as well, and this can mean the difference between hours of waiting and minutes.

EA boasts that the EA app is the only PC platform to support this technology.

When it comes to patches and game updates, EA isn’t the only one conscious about it. Activision has announced a rolling size optimization plan for Call of Duty HQ just this August, which players will see start to materialize in Black Ops 6.

Mad Max Director George Miller Joins Death Stranding 2 Cast as Tarman; Other Characters Revealed

Revealed during Death Stranding 2’s Special Stage presentation at TGS 2024, Australian filmmaker George Miller, the visionary behind the Mad Max franchise, has been confirmed as the newest cast to join Death Stranding 2.

We can’t tell you much about George Miller’s character, Tarman, since the presentation was in Japanese, though we can show you the first look at his character in the game.

A winged black cat also accompanies him.

There’s not much we can provide about the character just yet as the presentation is in Japanese, though we should know more shortly once translations become available.

While it may seem odd to see George Miller appearing in Death Stranding 2, for those who played the first game, this appearance probably isn’t much of a surprise, considering how many cameos appeared in it. What’s more, Guillermo del Toro, another filmmaker, also appeared in the first game and played a central role in the game’s plot. We can only assume that will be the case here, though given that he’s credited as “Special Appearance,” much like Del Toro was in the first game, we’d wager his character Tarman will likely be voiced by a different actor. That’s speculation on our part, of course.

Additionally, he will be joined by Elle Fanning as Tomorrow and Shioli Kutsuna as Rainy.

Though there’s no release date, Death Stranding 2 is currently slated to launch sometime in 2025, exclusively on the PS5.

Team Asobi Wanted FF7 Character in Astro Bot, But Square Enix Didn’t Approve It; Collab Picks Based on “Positive Impression and Genuine Nostalgia”

Team Asobi didn’t just make a charming platformer with Astro Bot, but one full of nods and references to other games that were released on PlayStation platforms that made the experience richer and more memorable as well. While the game did feature an assortment of cameos, there were a few noticeable absences as well, and there are ones that might have caught some players by surprise.

Chief among the missing collabs? We didn’t see Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy 7 in the game. Sure, Final Fantasy 7 is from a third-party studio, but FF7’s fate is so entwined with the PlayStation console that no references to it from the game was a bit surprising. Well, as it turns out, Team Asobi wanted Cloud in the game, but it’s Square Enix who nixed the deal. This was revealed by Team Asobi chief Nicolas Doucet in a new interview where the developer also shared the collaboration development process.

According to Doucet, they approached Square Enix about it, but it wasn’t able to get it approved.  “It’s difficult to comment on that,” Doucet notes, and added, “We really respect the choice of each publisher.”

For those not old enough to remember, Final Fantasy 7 was the first game in the franchise to be released on a PlayStation platform, and this was after Square Enix decided to develop the game on the original PlayStation (PS1) instead of the Nintendo 64,  with the PS1’s CD format cited as the main reason for Square to jump ship. This was noteworthy, as before FF7’s release on the PS1, Nintendo was the go-to platform for anything Final Fantasy, and the franchise’s jump from Nintendo to Sony signaled an end of an era, and essentially won the console wars then.

Another character the studio wanted to put into the game is Twisted Metal’s Sweet Tooth, but they got advice from the developers who worked on the series that perhaps including a clown-themed serial killer in the game wouldn’t be a good fit. Doucet states, “They advised us—they didn’t force us—and we agreed that it was better to leave this character out. Because, if you’re playing with your kids, we don’t want you to have to explain what this character does.”

When it comes to who made it into Astro Bot, it’s a mix of popular characters and some relatively unknown ones. From God of War’s Kratos, to someone as obscure as the original PlayStation “mascot” Polygon Man. How did Team Asobi decide on who’s making the cut or not? Doucet explains the collaboration choices stating, “They need to be games that have left people with a positive impression and genuine nostalgia”

The wait for Astro Bot’s next collab won’t be a long one, as Team Asobi revealed that free DLC is on the way this Fall 2024 as a title update, and it confirms that Helldivers 2 will be part of the deployment.

In addition to that, the game’s end credits also confirmed that we’ll be seeing Eve from Stellar Blade, the Assassin’s Creed franchise and more in the future.

OD Is a Game “Like No Other,” Espionage Game Physint in “Early Concept Stage,” Says Kojima

Hideo Kojima, the renowned game designer behind Death Stranding, has revealed more details about his upcoming projects. While discussing his new horror game OD, he described it as something completely different from his previous works.

In an interview with Variety, Kojima stated, “It’s a game like no other. I wanted to do something new that wasn’t Death Stranding, so I teamed up with Microsoft to create OD. I can’t go into too much detail, but it’s also hard to explain. It’s a bit risky and a new challenge for me.”

However, he didn’t mention a release date for OD. For those not familiar with the project, it’s a horror game Kojima is working on with Microsoft. So far, there’s not a lot known about it other than it features acclaimed actors Sophia Lillis and Hunter Schafer, and is part of a collaboration with notable horror film director Jordan Peele. Kojima’s last horror project, P.T., was also widely praised by gamers despite being just a demo.

He also shared some insights about his espionage game, Physint, which he described as being in its “early concept stage.” The game was announced during an earlier State of Play event this year. The game is described as ‘action espionage,’ a genre Kojima originally defined with Metal Gear. Because of this, many see Physint as a spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid. Kojima aso hinted that the project could evolve into a film in the future.

He further explained that Physint is part of Kojima Productions’ broader strategy to expand beyond traditional gaming. After establishing the Death Stranding IP, the studio is now focused on growing its presence across various platforms and media, such as movies, anime, and TV dramas. Physint reflects this approach, aiming to explore new possibilities within “digital entertainment,” which could include creating new IPs and experimenting with different formats beyond video games.

Regarding the Death Stranding movie, Kojima assured fans that despite his busy schedule, he will supervise the plot, although he won’t be directing it himself. “Those works are my babies, and I love movies, so I want it to be something that movie fans will really enjoy,” he said.

Star Wars Outlaws Game Director to Shift Focus to The Division 3 After Overseeing Next Month of Updates

While Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment just released Star Wars Outlaws, the game’s director Julian Gerighty won’t be sticking around to handle the development of the game’s post-launch DLCs and updates.

In an interview, it’s revealed that Gerighty will continue to work on Star Wars Outlaws a little bit longer to oversee the “next month of upgrades and patches” before moving on to the next project on their plate. Gerighty’s departure from the Star Wars game isn’t a sign of Ubisoft abandoning the game or anything, but rather, the developer is shifting focus to work on Massive’s other project in development, The Division 3. Taking over for Gerighty will be a team comprised of a creative director, a game director and “very seasoned Massive people” that will carry on to develop the game’s planned story DLCs, and game updates to improve the game.

Gerighty will continue work on The Division 3, which was announced a year ago, but has since been kept in the lid by Ubisoft. In that same announcement, it was mentioned that Gerighty, who was the Creative Director of The Division 2, will be taking on the role of Executive Producer for the third chapter in the franchise. No word yet on whether anything changed in his role at the time of this writing.

As for Star Wars Outlaws, the roadmap for the action game has already been released, and we know the game’s first premium story DLC will be released this November, with another one set to be pushed out in “Spring 2025.” Alongside the planned story content, the studio also promised game updates and other improvements to be released for players..

In other Star Wars Outlaws news, while no specific numbers were given by Ubisoft in terms of the game’s sales, the company did confirm that it did not meet expectations commercially, and how it had a “softer” impact than expected. In that same announcement, Ubisoft mentioned they are planning to push out game updates to further improve the game, and they now targeting the Star Wars title to be a “strong long-term performer.”

While Star Wars Outlaws fared fairly well critically, it wasn’t the breakout hit Ubisoft was expecting; especially since it had the biggest marketing budget in the company’s history. Our review of the game was critical of its flaws, but also noted how there’s a fun game underneath it all.

Delta Force to Focus on More “Grounded” Cosmetics, Currently “Exploring” Crossovers With Other Games

With Delta Force’s being a free-to-play game, it’s a given that we’ll see cosmetics skins, weapon camos and the like as part of its revenue stream. The big question here is: will the developers at Team Jade follow the Call of Duty formula for cosmetics wherein anything goes? Thankfully, that won’t be the case.

If you’re worried that we’ll be seeing anime characters, wrestlers and all sorts of crazy skins in Delta Force post-launch, don’t fret as that won’t be the case. Speaking to MP1st, Team Jade Design Director Ricky Liao confirmed that we’ll be seeing more “grounded” cosmetics in line with the game’s theme.

MP1st: In terms of cosmetics, will TiMi focus on more “grounded” and realistic skins or will it be more like recent Call of Duty skins where anything goes?

Ricky: We want to focus on more grounded aesthetics that fit the Delta Force tone and style.

Continuing with the cosmetics topic, we also asked whether crossovers and collaborations are part of the plans, which Liao confirmed is something they’re “exploring.”

MP1st: Going hand in hand with cosmetics, are there plans to do crossovers with other games in terms of cosmetics or events?

Ricky: This is something that we’re currently exploring, however any such crossover would need to respect the visual design and overall identity of Delta Force.

This is definitely good news, especially for those tired of seeing weird character skins in military shooters. Not only do these look goofy, but they sometimes make you guess whether someone you’ve seen is a friendly or not since they’re rocking a character skin that doesn’t offer a clear indicator which side they’re fighting for.

In terms of crossovers, which one would you think work within the game’s theme? I gather, seeing the likes of Battlefield and Call of Duty are certainly out of the question given they’re direct competitors, but there are other licenses and games that could maybe fit what Team Jade is looking for.

Stay tuned to our full Delta Force interview hitting the site soon.

Rumor: Nintendo Switch 2 Development Now ‘Complete,’ With Release Set for March or April 2025

A new rumor suggests that the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is ready for release, with a launch window set for March or April 2025. According to information shared by Ruben Mercado, CEO of Blade Representaciones S.L, the console’s development is ‘complete,’ and his company has already received final units of the hardware.

Mercado announced on the Vandal Radio podcast that Nintendo plans to launch the Switch 2 in March or April. They have not confirmed the exact date yet, as they are monitoring sales trends in the final months of the fiscal year. The expected price range for the Switch 2 is between $400 and $500, making it pricier than its predecessor but still more affordable compared to current Sony consoles.

He also shared that the new Joy-Con controllers will feature an innovative magnetic locking system, which will keep them firmly attached to the console. Mercado also stated that they have redesigned the analog sticks, which will differ from those in the current Switch models.

Additional rumors suggest that the battery life of the new console will be significantly improved, and it may include backward compatibility features. Moreover, photos of Switch 2 factory prototypes have already leaked, revealing an 8-inch screen and 12GB LPDDR5X-7500 memory.

Don’t forget, this is a rumor, and as such, should be taken with a grain of salt. Hopefully, we can get an official announcement from Nintendo by the end of 2024 to put all these rumors to rest. As we get more information, we’ll make sure to keep you informed here at MP1st.

In other FF16 news, Square Enix confirmed that both Final Fantasy XVI (16) and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth did not meet expectations when it comes to profits, which is s shame given how excellent the game is. For reference, you can read our review here where we state, “Square Enix manages to make the franchise “grow up” alongside the players who grew up playing the series. FFXVI deals with more mature themes and manages to make it matter without being overly preachy about it.”
