Chorus Hands-On Preview – In-Sync in Space

Making its debut announcement last year, I was given an opportunity to go hands-on with Deep Silver Fishlabs’ high-flying action packed space shooter, Chorus. With roughly an hour’s worth of gameplay under my belt, here are my thoughts on Chorus.

First small disclaimer. The footage seen in this preview was provided directly from Deep Silver Fishlabs, as we were not allowed to record our own gameplay. While this isn’t our own gameplay, the footage provided showcases the exact same demo I played, and as far as I could tell, showed no graphical or performance differences.

So, what is Chorus? Well, in short, Chorus is a single-player driven space combat shooter that has a similar focus and feel to gameplay like other craft titles like Ace Combat, Everspace, and Star Wars Squadron.

You’ll take on the role of Nara, an organic being created by an organization known as the Dark Cult. Sadly, not a whole lot of story details were revealed during the demo, but what we do know is something goes wrong between Nara and the Dark Cult, forcing her to hunt down members of the mysterious organization in order to bring it down. A big task for one person, though luckily she isn’t the only one out there wanting the Dark Cult gone.

Again, very light story elements in the demo with the majority of it being told in a similar fashion to that of Ace Combat, with open comm chatter throughout missions.Voice acting will clearly play a pivotal role, and as far as we can tell Chorus strikes a great, and appealing balance. Nara for example will at times have her own subconscious talk to her, perfectly delivering lines and portraying them in an ominous way..

Combat will also feel familiar to Ace Combat vets,  and the previously mentioned titles with Chorus leaning heavily into the arcadey style of flight. It’s fast paced, with loads of different, and crazy maneuverability that the players can achieve. However, unless I was doing something wrong, we didn’t notice any kind of fast zero-g u-turning. I mean, I know it’s space and all, but some sort of quick u-turning would have been nice to have in case, y’know, you want to change directions quickly.

The demo only featured one ship, and we aren’t too sure if there would be more available at release. However, the one ship did give us an opportunity to explore Chorus’ upgrade and equipment system.

In total, there are three types of weapons that the ship is equipped with, there’s a gatling gun, missiles and short burst lasers. Depending on the kind of enemy you are firing at, some weapons may be more effective than others. Regardless, they can all be upgraded to different variants that have greater perks, though increased power consumption leads to faster exhaustion.

There are modifications that can be done to the ship to improve that, along with a number of other stats. Plenty to mess around with that’ll lead to some interesting ship builds.

Additionally, the ship also has two abilities. One that scans the area to find hidden enemies, while the other acts as a short range teleportation that lets you get behind chasing enemies. We found ourselves using the teleportations quite a lot as you can imagine as you’ll find yourself in plenty of dogfight chases.

Now, for those Ace pilots out there wondering if Chorus is going to offer any kind of real challenge, while the demo did have a bit, it certainly didn’t scream being hard at all. Granted, we were locked into medium difficulty. So I can’t really say much on that matter outside of that.

So far, so good, Chorus looks to bring back the glory days of Colony Wars, TIE Fighter (albeit in a more arcade-y version), and dogfights all in a pretty neat package. Based on the footage, there’s not going to be a lack of explosions, and other adrenaline-pumping dogfights the genre is known for. Thankfully, Fishlabs has managed to make the game feel alive; I mean, as alive as you can be in space.

We still have questions regarding different ships, how immersive can the story be, and the like, but it looks like we’ll have to wait until Chorus flies out this December 3, 2021 for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, Epic, Stadia, Luna and Steam for PC.

COD Warzone Playlist Update for September 23 Brings Gameplay Changes

Raven Software has released the COD Warzone playlist update for September 23, and outside of the new playlist, there are gameplay-related changes too. This is a server-side update, and doesn’t require a download. Check out the complete patch notes below.

COD Warzone Playlist Update for September 23 Patch Notes | COD Warzone Sept. 23 Patch Notes:

Modes:

Iron Trials ’84

The following changes are exlusive to the Iron Trials ’84 mode:

  • Buy Stations
    • The Specialist Token has been added
    • Supply Run discounts are now 50% on every item except Team Redeploy (100%), Loadout Drop Marker (10%), and Specialist Token (10%)
    • The Hardline Perk now gives a 25% discount to every item except Self Revive (20%), Loadout Drop Marker (10%), and Specialist Token (20%)

We suspect very few people will be able to say they’ve purchased a Specialist Token. However, we do feel there is an opportunity to provide high tier Players with additional impactful outlets for their hard earned resources. Additionally, further enabling purchasing power with Hardline is something we would like to continue to explore.

  • Contracts
    • Contract Cash rewards (per Player) have been reduced. Multiplier values are unchanged.
      • Recon
        • $1,300 down to $1,100
      • Scavenger
        • $2,500 down to $1,600
      • Bounty
        • $3,800 down to $2,500
      • Supply Run
        • $1,300 down to $1,200

We recognize that this may be a polarizing change, but we feel it is a necessary one. When we gate access to Loadouts behind a large price tag, as is the case, we force players to continue moving around the map. This works to disincentivize camping. While we do not anticipate this change will have a large impact on the most skilled Players – those who stay put and avoid engagements will find themselves resource strained and quickly falling behind. This is part of how we subtly encourage map movement and fighting. Additionally, we feel scavenging, being resourceful, and barely scraping by is part of what adds to the charm and intensity of the Trials. This dynamic makes room for, and emphasizes other facets of skill like movement, teamwork, strategy, and map knowledge. By delaying Loadout acquisition, we are further smoothing out player power such that each increase to it is much more noticeable and allows more room for those secondary skillsets to shine. We will be monitoring the mode and Player feedback closely to ensure this change is having the intended effect.

  • Gulag
    • Light Machine Guns (except the RPD (BOCW)) and all Tactical Rifles have been removed from Gulag Loadouts.

We feel an emphasis on Submachine Guns and Assault Rifles better suits this version of the Gulag.

  • Melee
    • Weapons will no longer deal more than 120 damage per melee hit.
  • Loot
    • Armor Satchel, Gas Mask, and Self Revive drop rates have been reduced
    • Ground Loot XM4 (BOCW) attachments have been updated
    • Ground Loot Bullfrog (BOCW) attachments have been updated

The XM4 (BOCW) and Bullfrog (BOCW) Attachments are now more closely aligned with popular builds.

Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed additional collision issues with various elements on Rebirth Island allowing Players to exploit/peek/shoot through them.
  • Fixed an issue with the Bullfrog (BOCW) that reduced recoil while firing.

Weapons:

Submachine Guns

  • Bullfrog (BOCW)
    • ADS Speed decreased by 9%
    • Movement Speed decreased by 1%
    • ADS Movement Speed decreased by 2%

The Bullfrog (BOCW) is a true jack of all trades. It has great Mobility, Effective Damage Range, Handling, and base Magazine Capacity – which would often act as a free Attachment. These changes, in conjunction with a Recoil bug fix, will bring the Bullfrog (BOCW) much closer to the competition.

  • Shotgun Bravo (BOCW)
    • Maximum Damage Range decreased from 4.5 to 3.5 meters
    • Second Damage Range decreased from 8.1 to 5.5 meters
    • Third Damage Range decreased from 13.2 to 9.9 meters

The Shotgun Bravo (BOCW) has been incredibly dominant due to its Effective Damage Range, Magazine Capacity, Mobility, and Rate of Fire. By reducing its Effective Damage Ranges, the Shotgun Bravo (BOCW) will begin to feel more like a Shotgun and less like a Sniper.

Attachments:

Barrels

  • Krig 6 (BOCW)
    • 19.7” Takedown
      • Horizontal Recoil Control increased from 8% to 9%
    • 19.7” Ranger
      • Vertical Recoil Control increased from 8% to 9%
    • 15.5” Contour
      • Horizontal Recoil Control increased from 4% to 5%
      • Vertical Recoil Control increased from 4% to 5%
    • 15” CMV Mil-Spec
      • Horizontal Recoil Control increased from 8% to 9%
      • Vertical Recoil Control increased from 8% to 9%

Given the Krig 6’s (BOCW) most recent adjustments, we felt it was appropriate to increase the effectiveness of its Recoil Control Attachments slightly.

  • AK-47 (BOCW)
    • 18.2” Takedown
      • Horizontal Recoil Control decreased from 11.1% to 10%
    • 20” Liberator
      • Vertical Recoil Control decreased from 11.1% to 10%
    • 18.2” VDV Reinforced
      • Horizontal Recoil Control decreased from 5.5% to 4%
      • Vertical Recoil Control decreased from 5.5% to 4%
    • 20” Spetsnaz RPK Barrel
      • Horizontal Recoil Control decreased from 9% to 8%
      • Vertical Recoil Control decreased from 9% to 8.5%
  • XM4 (BOCW)
    • 13.7” Takedown
      • Horizontal Recoil Control decreased from 11.3% to 10%
    • 13.7” Ranger
      • Vertical Recoil Control decreased from 11.3% to 10%
    • 13.5” Reinforced Heavy
      • Horizontal Recoil Recoil Control decreased from 5.5 to 4%
    • 13.5” Task Force
      • Horizontal Recoil Control decreased from 9% to 8%
      • Vertical Recoil Control decreased from 9% to 8%

As for the playlist changes, here’s what’s new:

Once we get a new playlist update, we’ll let our readers know.

Borderlands 3 Update Today September 23 Patch Notes

Gearbox Software has released the Borderlands 3 update today September 23, and it includes some fixes, which include one for Freddie and regarding a mission that was bugged! Check out the official details below straight from Gearbox. Note that this is a server-side update, so no download is required, as players will automatically apply it once they connect to the game’s servers.

Borderlands 3 Update Today September 23 Patch Notes | Borderlands 3 Sept. 23 Update Patch Notes:

Here’s what the studio announced as the fix for today’s update:

Today’s changes to Borderlands 3 adjust Freddie to correctly offer the Homestead Pt 3 mission in DLC1. Maurice’s Black Market will also change locations. These changes will be live on all platforms by 12:00 PM PT.

This was a bug that could occasionally occur if the player had completed Homestead Pt 2, but not Homestead Pt 3 before starting the Handsome Jackpot DLC. It would show Freddie as a mission giver for Pt 3. This updates that to remove the mission from him.

That’s about it. If there are other gameplay-related changes in this Borderlands 3 patch, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.

Patch 1.0.1.89542
We have implemented the following changes.

KITS

  • The “Trauma Station” Ability Replacers (Painkiller Station and Suppression Station) can now be placed down even when out of energy.

  • The Doc’s “Field Medic” Perk and its related Perks have had their range increased to 7m (previously 6m.)
  • The Demolisher’s “Rampage” Perk should now work correctly with flamethrowers.

WEAPONS
  • Fixed an issue with Special Ammo Consumables where they could be erroneously applied to the N79 EVA Laser Pistol. Attempting to do so will now display a message informing you that Special Ammo is not available for this weapon.
CHALLENGE CARDS
  • The “Stuck Magazines” Challenge Card should no longer affect AI companions.
  • The “Tactical Cam” Challenge Card should now correctly affect all players in a party.
ENVIRONMENT
  • Fixed a number of places in the game where players could get stuck in the world geometry.

GENERAL
  • Fixed a situation where kills with flamethrowers would not be counted towards the progress of a Tactical Opportunity.
  • Intel items should now be able to be properly pinged with the correct message.
  • Fixed a number of situations where more players than intended were able to group up.

Steam Deck Interface for Dev Kits Leak Out

While there’s a lot of info known about Valve’s upcoming Steam Deck, prepare for more, as the Steam Deck interface for dev kits have leaked! This comes from an unnamed Chinese developer who apparently doesn’t care about NDA’s (non-disclosure agreements).

Check out this link for the video featuring the Steam Deck interface.

Outside of that, SteamDB creator Pavel Djundik has also share info (and screens) on the Steam Deck UI. Note that the images below have been shared before by Valve, and it is not the final iteration of the UI.

If you want more info about the Steam Deck, Valve has released a handy FAQ that covers a lot of ground when it comes to expanded memory, alternative operating systems, and more.

You can check out the full Steam Deck tech specs and unit layout here to get an idea how big it is.

Death Stranding PS4 to PS5 Save Transferring Is a Classic Kojima Move for One Last Journey on Last-Gen

Death Stranding PS5’s release is finally here, and while no doubt many of you are planning on using your old PS4 saves, it would seem that you may have one last delivery to make before you can do that.

Save Transfarring With a Twist

Death Stranding recently got an update on the PS4 in preparation for the PS5 release, so that users can continue with their progress by transferring their game save via the in-game menus.

PS5 owners no doubt should be familiar with this process, as countless titles before it required the PS4 version to be downloaded in order to perform a save transfer.

A rather annoying process, although Ghost of Tsushima recently changed that, as the PS5 version of the title would scan the console for PS4 saves, and handle everything directly from that version, which is a great time saver that we hope gets implemented in other titles.

Sadly, Death Stranding doesn’t support that kind of save transferring, but instead opts in requiring users to have the original PS4 version installed in order to start the process of transferring a save. However, unlike all those other titles that allow you to upload your saves directly from the main start menu, Death Stranding adds an extra step to this by only making the menu accessible from a delivery terminal. Meaning you’ll need to play the game before you can transfer your save.

I know, I know, this sounds dumb, and if this were any other title I would agree (I still do truth be told) with you, but it’s staying in theme with what the game is about, the journey. It’s rather clever if I’m honest.

One Last Last-Gen Journey

You know, if you’ve ever transferred your PS4 save to a supported PS5 version, chances are you probably didn’t revisit the said title beforehand. I know that for me, I didn’t play an second of Spider-Man, Marvel’s Avengers, Ghost of Tsushima, and the Final Fantasy VII Remake since their original launch windows, and getting the platinum. Basically downloaded them again just to access the main start-up menu to do the quick transfer and then deleted them, never to touch their last-gen versions ever again.

With better graphics, frame-rate, faster loading, and in some cases, more content, there really was little to no reason to go back and play the original over the new unless it was to mop up some remaining trophies. Death Stranding would be no exception to that rule, however, a bit annoyingly, you can’t just transfer your save from the start screen like so many other titles.

Like I mentioned, you need to actually play the game, and this is all pretty dependent on where you last saved. Some people may be lucky and be at a delivery terminal, while others (like in my case) may be somewhere out in the middle of nowhere, possibly mid-mission.

For those unaware, Death Stranding is a game that is literally about making deliveries. There’s more to it of course, but without getting into anything complex, that’s the gist of it. In the case of transferring your PS4 save to the PS5, you are literally making one last delivery on the PS4 version. It’s one last time that you’ll ever get to experience the game with locked 30fps, lower resolution, and long loading screens. And by no means is, or was that experience a bad one, because Death Stranding is a beautiful game that made use of the hardware it ran on. A technological gem for the PS4 no doubt, and for returning players we are reminded of that as we venture to the closest delivery terminal.

Yeah, it’s dumb that this isn’t readily available from the main menu (on PS5 it is) like every other game, but at the same time, as someone who Platinum-ed the original I can’t help but chuckle due to sentimental feelings of doing this very same thing throughout the entire game before. It’s a nod at itself. You could also say that you are bridging a connection between the two versions.

Yeah, sure, you could say that maybe I’m looking too much into this, but do you really think there was some sort of technical limit that forced Kojima Production to have save transferring like this when everyone else does it from the main menu? Heck, it’s right there on the main menu of the Director’s Cut.

I’m leaning towards it being intentional, but either way I do think this gave me a bigger appreciation for the PS5 version when I finally completed the save transfer. It allowed me to re-experience the game, even for a tiny bit, and immediately compare it to the newer and improved version. Yeah I could have watched Digital Foundry’s lengthy analysis of all the improvements, but at the same time I just witness the bulk of it for myself. It gave me an opportunity for one last hoorah, and to say goodbye to the last-gen version one last time.

Metal Gear Solid 2 Director Hideo Kojima Originally Wanted Hans Zimmer as Composer for the Game

It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost 20 years since the release of Metal Gear Solid 2, and even at its age, we learn something new about it still. This time around. the game’s director, Hideo Kojima, confirmed that he originally wanted Hans Zimmer as composer for the game. However due to the production budget they couldn’t afford him, and instead went with fellow Hollywood composer Harry Gregson-Williams instead.

In an interview with Game Developer talking about the iconic soundtrack to the sequel of 1998’s Metal Gear Solid, producer Rika Muranaka said Kojima and Konami initially wanted to tap Zimmer to produce the score for the highly anticipated new adventure starring Solid Snake. Unfortunately the composer declined, and so they approached Harry Gregson-Williams as a second choice and the rest was history.

We went to Media Ventures (now known as Remote Control Productions), which is Hans Zimmer’s studio. We originally wanted to get Hans Zimmer, but he was like ‘No, I can’t do it for that kind of money’–he’s so expensive, it’s ridiculous. So Hideo asked me to try and get in touch with Harry, because Harry was working for Hans Zimmer too in that studio at that time. At that time, he was still an upcoming composer, but he had done Enemy of the State, so a lot of people had started to notice him.

While the Metal Gear Solid series would become one of the best-selling video game franchises in history, Hideo Kojima would eventually depart from Konami following completion of his final MGS entry in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. The legendary video game developer now has a new studio in KojimaProductions, and is currently ready to release a new version of his first non-Konami related IP in Death Stranding: Director’s Cut — which is coming out this Friday September 24 and you can view the final pre-release trailer here.

Respawn Has “Nothing in the Works” When It Comes to Titanfall 3

We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but for those looking forward to another installment of the Titanfall franchise, it seems our wait for Titanfall 3 will be a super long one, as a Respawn Entertainment’s Community Coordinator Jason Garza has confirmed that Titanfall 3 isn’t being developed at the studio.

Speaking in his latest video that aired over the weekend, Garza was asked by a fan about the Titanfall franchise, and whether he has any comments about it.

It’s an old one it was back in when Xbox first launched, um, yeah that’s it. Don’t get your hopes up, man. I’ve said this before, it’s just we don’t have anything in the works; there’s nothing — there’s nothing there. So, we got too many other games in the works right now at work.

Given Garza also revealed that there are only 1-2 people left at the studio working on the franchise, we really shouldn’t be that surprised about this, no? Heck, the latest news we had about the Titanfall franchise was about a suspected malware issue, which Respawn issued a statement for. If you’re looking forward to any sort of Titanfall action, the best is to just (try) play Titanfall 2’s multiplayer, or dabble in Apex Legends given the shared universe when it comes to lore, guns, and the like.

However, there’s still hope, no? I mean, EA did resurrect the Dead Space franchise, though it was after the release of Dead Space 3 back in 2013. Perhaps we’ll hear about Titanfall 3 sometime in 2030 or something.

If you know a friend or two waiting for Titanfall 3, you’ll want to show them this article. No one wants to be the bearer of bad news, but it has to be done.

You can watch Garza talk about this in the video below around the 30:46 mark.

Thanks, Okami!
