Silent Hill 2 at 20: A Sequel That Improved Greatly Over the Original

One of the greatest things a video game can do is stand the test of time, and in this particular case, it happens to be the follow up to the original Silent Hill that’s arguably more popular than its predecessor. We look back at the legendary Silent Hill 2 at 20 — a sequel that improved greatly over the original and is still considered a classic two decades later.

To get a better understanding of what makes Silent Hill 2 a legendary masterpiece, we have to go back to the beginning and briefly talk about the first game that started it all. In 1999, Konami released Silent Hill for the original Sony PlayStation — a survival horror title that relied on more than just cheap scares and served as a real competitor to Capcom’s highly successful Resident Evil franchise. Unlike the game that served up zombies and other bioweapon made monstrosities, Silent Hill was more rooted in psychological horror, and drew inspiration from Hollywood horror films such as Jacob’s Ladder. The first game saw main protagonist Harry Mason searching for his missing daughter while fighting all kinds of evil, and nightmarish-looking creatures that manifested out of the demonic presence that was unleashed in the town. Much like a horror film it was an experience of terror and discomfort, as the game made you aware of your surroundings thanks to the creepy atmosphere and static that comes from your radio — signaling that enemies are coming. This is provoked even further with the numerous puzzles and mysteries you have to solve in order to progress forward the game, which makes you tense as well as fearing what lies in the unknown at the same time.

Silent Hill became a critical and financial success, and as one of the final games to come out before the release of the PlayStation 2, eyes were turned towards a sequel. Team Silent, the group responsible for the original four Silent Hill games, actually began working on the sequel prior to the release of the first game, but the future looked bright in bringing a much better experience to gamers, and what could be made using the new hardware Sony’s newest console would bring. The PS2 allowed for more powerful visuals, textures, and graphics to be incorporated that it, improving things and bringing Silent Hill to life in a much more detailed manner that the town itself is a character that plays out as both a beautiful, yet creepy suburban neighborhood that is stuck in a moment of time, and yields unpredictable consequences for whoemver goes in there.

Released in North America for the PlayStation 2 on September 24, 2001, Silent Hill 2 shattered expectations and presented a vastly superior looking sequel, with players taking control of a new protagonist named James Sunderland as he searches for clues surrounding a letter delivered to him from his wife Mary Shepherd Sunderland, who died three years prior to the events of the game. Completely unrelated to the plot of the first game save for the setting, the game was a fresh new tale that was set in another part of the town, expanding on its history, and the effect it has to anyone who is drawn to it and dares to go inside. Venturing into the town, he meets other people who just so happen to be there, including a young girl named Laura, a teenager looking for her mother named Angela, and a confused man named Eddie. However the person James interacts with the most and establishes an impactful relationship with in the game is Maria — a woman who looks exactly like his late wife Mary but is much more aggressive and has never met him in her life.

Because of its supernatural aspect, whoever visits is treated to a manifestation of their deepest fears and demons, thereby drawing on the psychological horror aspect the game thrives in. This explains why there are different monsters and creatures protagonists of the game faces — they are representations of their guilty conscience and whatever skeletons they have hidden inside their closet, and brought to life as enemies through the dark power that still resides in Silent Hill itself. For example — and this is leaning on spoiler territory, James’ manifestations come in the form of nightmarish nurses, deformed creatures, and a towering powerhouse called Pyramid Head who represent his guilt and sexual frustration over what happened to his wife, something that he has to confront by the game’s end and, depending on your choices, will determine the ending he receives.

Unlike the first game or even the sequels that came afterwards, Silent Hill 2 holds the distinction of being the only Silent Hill game with several multiple endings that go beyond good or bad. Konami and Team Silent have kept their canonicity ambiguous, and range from James leaving Silent Hill and accepting his wife’s fate to a more grim outcome where he takes his own life. There are even two joke endings, which involve a dog, and the other UFOs abducting James and meeting the hero of the first game, Harry Mason.

For the better part of two decades, Silent Hill fandom has come to embrace and hold Silent Hill 2 in high esteem as one of the most influential survival horror titles, and one of the best video games ever made. It is a work of art, and shows just how much Team Silent was instrumental in making the series a masterpiece thanks to the contributions of its staff, including artist and designer Masahiro Ito, and renowned musician and composer Akira Yamaoka. In fact Yamaoka’s music would serve as one of the core ingredients that made the franchise so beloved, with a resonating and haunting soundtrack and style that continued well into the new couple of sequels and even the 2006 Silent Hill film, which combined elements and used music from the first two games in the series.

Silent Hill 2 would see many ports following its original release in the PS2. It would get an extended edition in the original Xbox that would make its way to the PS2 again as Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams, and would include an extra scenario featuring Maria called Born From a Wish that served as a prequel to the events of the main campaign. There would also be a PC port for the game, and then eventually a high definition rerelease that packed the director’s cut alongside Silent Hill 3 called Silent Hill HD Collection for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2012. The latter release is highly criticized by fans however, due to the numerous bugs and glitches it had as the source code for the original games were lost and had to be recreated.

While there have been no new Silent Hill games made since Shattered Memories and Downpour, many fans consider the Team Silent games as the only true representation of the Silent Hill franchise done right. An attempt was made to resurrect the series back in 2014 in Silent Hills — with Metal Gear series creator Hideo Kojima collaborating with Guillermo del Toro and The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus on the project. Unfortunately that project was ultimately cancelled following the well documented split between Kojima and Konami, and the future of the Silent Hill series has been all but forgotten. Much like the town itself the series remains in isolation and dormancy, until we see signs of light like the rumors that have stirred on a new game being made.

Happy 20th anniversary Silent Hill 2. You will always be in our restless dreams.

God of War Ragnarok to Feature Different Shields, Devs Want to “Open Up” How Gamers Handle Kratos’ Loadouts

In God of War 2018, Sony Santa Monica added a new weapon in Kratos’ arsenal in the Guardian Shield. Now, if you watched the gameplay reveal trailer for God of War Ragnarok, you might have noticed that Kratos seems to have a different shields in different areas of the video. Sony Santa Monica has confirmed that players will be able to use different shields in God of War Ragnarok.

Speaking to a video interview with YouTuber Jon Ford, God of War Ragnarok Eric Williams confirmed that the game will feature different shields, and the devs are doing this so that players can be more expressive in how they set up Kratos’ loadouts.

Yes, there are different shields, and they have different defensive options, and abilities, and the reason why we’re doing this is we really want to open up the expressive choice — the way that you build your Kratos — like the equipment, and loadout, and things like that. So all the way down to the defense, you can, you know, kind of play a little differently, and then enemies know how to respond to that, or force you into these different situations where you need to use different things. So I think it’ll be fun for players to explore that, but also, just kind of, like we want it to be more expressive where you know your choices matter when you set them up – Eric Williams, God of War Ragnarok Game Director

This is definitely good news, and this means that with the Leviathan Axe, Blades of Chaos, and maybe other new goodies we’ll be able to use, there will be more combat variety in the game, and possibly make it even more personalized compared to GoW 2018.

Speaking of combat, Sony Santa Monica also confirmed that we’ll be seeing more combat set-ups for Kratos and Atreus in the sequel!

God of War Ragnarok is scheduled to be unleashed sometime next year for the PS4 and PS5.

Giving fans an idea of what’s in store for the game, some of the trophies range from completing each of the 4 acts in the campaign in Nightmare, Veteran, or Recruit difficulty, to meeting certain conditions and laying waste to enemies in a creative manner that nets you a colorful achievement. For example, Snitches Get Snitches can only be obtained if you kill a Snitch without alerting the rest of the horde, while a trophy such as as the Cleanup Crew is challenging in itself — you can only get that by making sure none of your teammates are incapacitated or killed during a game! There’s some replay value right there, and should give shooters and their friends a lot of time to spend with the game!

Back 4 Blood will be released for PC and consoles on October 12. If you missed the Campaign Trailer showing off new characters, check it out here.

The Last of Us 2 “All-New Content” to Be Revealed on September 26 by Naughty Dog

In just a few days, The Last of Us day will be upon us, and while we’re used to seeing new stuff revealed during the day (usually new clothes, caps and the like), Naughty Dog has something more special planned it seems, as the studio revealed that they are revealing The Last of Us 2 new content on September 26 at 9AM PT/12NN ET/12MN HKT/6PM CET!

This was announced by Naughty Dog Designer of Communications Joshua Bradley,

In addition to the merch below, we will be revealing some all-new content on September 26 at 9:00am PT/ 6:00pm CET. Be sure to come back and check it out on TheLastofUs.com/TLOUDay.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on just what this “all-new content” is, and we’re hoping it’ll be more than just new cosmetic items for our protagonists.

Outside of that, there are also new The Last of Us 2-themed items available! There’s a beanie, new shirts, and more. You can check out all the new products announced today right here.

Could this announcement be tied to the battle royale assets found in the game’s files? We highly doubt it, but we’re willing to be surprised.

EA Launching New Playtesting Website and Playtester Portal on Sept. 27

Following the announcement of the new EA Creator Network earlier this month, Electronic Arts (EA) has also announced the new EA Playtesting website and Playtester Portal!

This announcement was made over on Twitter, where the publisher announced that “all” playtesting and community playtesting will be accessed through the same portal.

On Sept 27 EA Playtesting and EA Community Playtesting become one, with the launch of our new Electronic Arts Playtesting website and Playtester Portal! All EA Playtesting & Community Playtesting events will be accessed through the same portal!

Stay tuned for more info!

We presume that all beta testing, all the stuff that content creatores have early access to will be going through here moving forward. Not only will this streamline the process, but chances are, it’ll help stem leaks as well.

Speaking of leaks and playtesting, don’t forget to check out our first gameplay look of Battlefield Mobile which is currently being playtested in Southeast Asia right now.

Destiny 2 Trials of Osiris This Week Replaced With Trials Labs, Here’s Everything You Need to Know

While Destiny 2 players have already seen massive changes in Trials of Osiris starting with this season, it seems Bungie isn’t stopping there. The studio announced that for this week, the Trials of Osiris will be replaced with Trials Labs: Capture Zone! This is the first Trials Labs spun by the developer, and this won’t be the last. Bungie has mentioned that they are collecting data and feedback, and players can expect more experimentation to take place as the season goes on.

Destiny 2 Trials Labs: Capture Zone Explanation:

This week, the normal Trials of Osiris playlist is replaced with Trials Labs: Capture Zone. This new mode is still Elimination, with the following changes:
  • 30 seconds after the round starts, a capture zone is enabled. Players can capture this zone to win the round – or just eliminate the other team like normal.
      • The capture zone has a waypoint from round start, including a countdown timer, so everyone will know exactly when and where it will be.
  • The capture zone starts in the middle of the map in the first round and changes location each round.
      • The team who just lost gets the advantaged spawn location.

Players can also expect double Trials rank points for every match as well for this weekend.

While that’s happening this week, Bungie has also given an explanation to some of the changes they’ve made. It’s a rather long read, but well worth it if you’re curious where the developers are coming from.

We tried something new for Trials this past weekend, something that has been requested in feedback since Trials launched back in Destiny 1. We tested out separating off flawless players (and their fireteams) from players who hadn’t yet gone flawless that week. Before we discuss what to expect this week (and in the future) we’d like to talk about the goals we have for matchmaking in Trials of Osiris and look at some key data points for the first two weeks.

One of the main changes we made with Trials this Season was to allow solo and duo players to queue up. This had two main benefits:
  • It allowed players a low barrier of entry and expectation to try the mode out.
  • And more importantly, it increased the population enough that fireteams of mid-skilled players landed more wins than if they only matched against other mid-skilled or high-skilled teams.
Solo players are a key to the entire system working. For example, in our first week, a whopping 54% were full fireteams vs. solos/duos. Cut to this week, where only 45% were fireteams vs. solos/duos — a pretty sharp drop.

Regarding blwlouts and solo play, Bungie has a lot to say:

KEEP SOLO PLAYERS PLAYING

We learned a lot from the first two weeks of solo matchmaking.
  • Week 1
  • Solo Wins: 23% of games
  • Blowouts (5-0 Losses): 38% of games
Most worryingly, the blowout rate for solo players went steadily up over the weekend. But then in the second weekend, the matchmaking changes pushed that rate back down.
  • Week 2
  • Solo Wins: 36% of games
  • Blowouts (5-0 Losses): 29% of games
This feels a lot better for solo players, but obviously it had some side effects for fireteams of mid-to-high skill. Long-term, we are looking to keep the solo win-rate above 30% and solo-fireteam blowouts under 33%.

KEEP GAME QUALITY HIGH (MAKE SURE MORE MATCHES FEEL COMPETITIVE, ESPECIALLY AT SEVEN WINS.)

We talked about blowouts as one way of looking for competitive matches. We also consider 5-1 matches as non-competitive. The sweet spot is really between 5-2 and 5-4. Those matches tend to feel good while playing, even if you end up losing.
In Week 1, we saw 60% of matches end at either 5-0 or 5-1. In Week 2, the number of non-competitive matches dropped to 52% — a nice improvement, but we would like to see this number drop to 30-40% over the long-term.
Finally, here’s a list of things that Bungie thought worked and didn’t work for this season of Trials.

OTHER THINGS THAT WORKED

  • We had just over 700k players this weekend – only 50k fewer players than Week 1. This is higher than expected, given a normal drop-off after launch combined with Distant Shore being a less popular map. Plus, we had 253k players go flawless!
  • Games were 10% longer, mostly due to more competitive games.

THINGS THAT DIDN’T WORK

  • We saw 34% less matches played overall, and the number of matches post-flawless dropped by 45%.
  • We had reports of significant numbers of players resetting 5-0 or 6-0 cards, but we saw around 16k total cards that were reset while flawless but under seven wins. Given the vast number of games and cards played (2.7m cards started this week), this isn’t a lot, but it is something we are watching, as it is unhealthy for the mode if it becomes more common.
  • Normally, we see nearly 50% of the players who go flawless doing so with someone else who is already flawless. Last week, it was 56%! This can either be a traditional “carry” or just playing with friends. That number dropped to 16% this week, which is unacceptably low for ‘friendgame’ content.
To address this, we are making two changes in Week 3:
  • We are waiting until the Sunday morning reset(10:00 AM PT) to enable the flawless pool. This serves as a middle ground between Week 1 and Week 2, and as the semi-permanent placement for enabling the flawless pool. As always, we will be looking at both analytics and feedback – so keep telling us what is working and what isn’t!
      • We are working on some deeper matchmaking solutions which we hope lets us remove the flawless pool. Look out for more info in mid/late October.
  • We are turning off matchmaking help until you have played at least two matches during the weekend.
In addition to the previously announced changes:
  • Players will no longer get Special ammo replenished when being revived.
  • Adding “Hold” functionality to purchase gear from Saint-14 to prevent accidental purchases.
  • Weapons received from the Reputation Rank Reward track on Saint-14 will now have their Masterwork Slots active. Previous weapons obtained won’t receive a Masterwork Slot.
  • Unfortunately, while we previously announced that we would be removing the matchmaking counter for this week, this change wasn’t quite able to make the 3.3.0.3 patch.
Looking further forward:
  • We expect to take another swing at matchmaking to keep some of the solo/lower skill protections from Week 2 without strongly negatively affecting flawless players.
  • We are looking at adjustments to rewards for round and match wins on seven-win cards.
  • Other than that, updates and Trials TWAB reports will be less common as we get Trials into a more stable state.
Lastly, Iron Banner will be back next week, which means Trials of Osiris is taking a week off.

Speaking of Trials, we’ll be posting the weekly map rotation and rank rewards later today, so make sure to check back on our Destiny game hub.

Halo Infinite Multiplayer Beta Proceeding as Planned, New Artwork Released

In case you didn’t know, 343 Industries ran a livestream yesterday as a preview for the Halo Infinite multiplayer beta, which starts this weekend! While the studio mentioned that the beta could be delayed due to game files. Rather than delay the beta, the studio has just decided to release the images now, rather than wait for them to be datamined.

Here’s what Joseph Staten, Head of Halo Creative at 343, had to say about the entire matter:

Hi Everyone,

In yesterday’s live stream we mentioned that there was an issue that might delay our Multiplayer Tech Preview. Well, the issue was this: we unintentionally included a group of concept art files in the Tech Preview build.

To be clear: none of these images spoil the Halo Infinite Campaign that you’ll get to play on December 8th. Indeed, we’ve already shown some of these images in previous blog posts.

This art represents a wide range of ideas that we explored early in pre-production and that we planned to share at a later date, as part of Infinite’s pre-launch promotion and other initiatives such as the upcoming “The Art of Halo Infinite” from our partners at Dark Horse (check out some sample excerpts below). For a time, we used these images as loading screens for internal studio builds—and that’s how they accidentally ended up in the Tech Preview build.

Rather than delay the flight, we’ve decided to share all the files with you now. Call it an unplanned “Happy Tech Preview Day!” gift. So, please enjoy this collection of beautiful art from 343 Industries’ incredibly talented concept art team. Download the collection here: 4K Zip File | HD Zip File

These images have inspired us—filled our minds with wonder and possibilities—and we hope they do the same for you.

Joseph Staten

Head of Creative, Halo Infinite

Released by way of Halo Waypoint website, the new artwork is from the upcoming The Art of Halo Infinite artbook. The multiplayer beta is also currently being worked, with the developers stating that the delay was due to concept art included in the Tech Preview build they had to remove.

You can take a look at the artwork at the gallery below.

Here’s a description of what these pieces of artwork represent by way of the latest blog entry posted at Halo Waypoint.

If you missed, a report has surfaced that Halo Infinite’s Infamous Craig gets a new look and brute images have also leaked out.
