Hot Wheels Unleashed Review – The Unicorn of Toy Car Racers (Xbox)

The debate was visceral and passionate. “What are you talking about?” I insisted. “There isn’t any comparison. Hot Wheels is clearly better than Barbie! For one, Barbie is always pink and all she does is wear different clothes. Hot Wheels come in a massive variety of colors spanning the entire spectrum, and you can make them do jumps. And besides, Barbies are for girls!” My mystified seven-year-old self scoffed with disdain and frustration, and just a little hint of anxiety (admittedly with considerably more childlike vocabulary). I was adamant that the girls among my Kindergarten classmates who chose the Barbie toys at McDonald’s were wrong for doing so. I loved Hot Wheels. Looking back more than 20 years later I’m a little embarrassed at the silly argument. But I think I understand the intensity.

For much of the time since Hot Wheels was introduced in 1968 it has been a solid staple toy for children most everywhere it’s been sold. Between being cheap and not taking up much space they’ve been an easy sell for parents, mine included. This means that they’ve been an important part of a lot of people’s lives and I was no exception. It’s personal for people. People that at this point range from Grandparents down to today’s Kindergartners.

With all that in mind it’s exciting to have a new proper Hot Wheels video game on our hands. There have been DLC add-ons in other games (Forza, Rocket League, and others) recently and the obligatory mobile games but it’s been some time since we’ve seen these die-cast speed machines have a full game unto themselves. Add to that the fact that the arcade racing genre has slowed down to a crawl for years, and it’s easy to get excited that we have another fully formed Hot Wheels racing game on consoles again. I have not personally wanted a game to be good as much as I wanted this one to be in a while. Hot Wheels deserves it. So, then let’s talk about how well it lives up to the legacy it’s pulling from.

Classical Gasoline

Normally the first time you boot up a racing game is nothing special, but I was impressed and excited by the first time I booted up Hot Wheels Unleashed. You’re greeted with the usual options to set the screen brightness, and contrast, and then your difficulty level. Right away, I found that the graphic design, while not excessive or complex, was interesting and creative. You start off with three cars that come out of blind boxes. In fact most of the cars come out of blind boxes whether they were unlocked in game or not. We’ll talk more about that in a minute, but suffice to say that I was disappointed (about the blind boxes).

Then you are put immediately into a tutorial race to show you the basics. The game controls similarly to what you would expect from an arcade racer. Right trigger for acceleration and left trigger primarily for drifting/breaking/driving in reverse. There’s a nitro system that applies to each car slightly differently to add variety. The cars all feel heavy enough to control well, but still light enough to be small toys. The ability to spin and flip the cars when they’re airborne is a nice touch. I was reminded of little-me’s own way of pretending the toys were doing tricks in slow motion while I spun them in my hand.

Gameplay-wise it’s clear that other than the toys themselves, the developers drew heavy inspiration from the TrackMania series from Ubisoft and the classic toy car racers like the MicroMachines games. Controls and track design more the former, visual and the environmental sensibility more the latter.

That being said, it’ll please serious fans to know that most of the game’s look and feel is derived from the Hot Wheel toys directly while borrowing elements from proven successes like the two games previously mentioned. The cars are all modeled on real toys and so are the track pieces. Spiders shooting web-balls to stop you for a second, scorpions filling the course with puddles of green goo that make you slow down, it’s a well done adaptation of the toys in a way that makes sense in a fantastical sort of way.

Little Green Lights

The developer — Milestone — has been doing racing games, mostly simulations, for more than two decades; and while this is a true-blue arcade racer, that expertise shines through. I’m going to come out and say it here: the racing in Hot Wheels Unleashed is really good. It shouldn’t shock anyone considering the pedigree of the team that made this game. It’s fun, plain and simple. There aren’t any weapons or guns like a kart racer (not that there’s anything wrong with those.), nor is there some added gimmick to make it more than it needs to be. The gameplay feels confident and focused. The action feels frantic and exciting, but not confusing. The music is fun and surprisingly good. The courses they designed are mostly fantastic with one or two frustrating exceptions. However, they all feel unique despite the consistent Hot Wheels aesthetic.

Being that we are MP1st, let’s talk about multiplayer. My wife and I had an absolute blast racing split-screen. Rarely did anyone get so far out front that it felt one sided. In my time with the game I found that every race was a contest right to the end. You start off only able to access a handful of premade tracks from split screen but you end up unlocking 50 or so more by playing through the single-player.

I had difficulty getting into online games given that the lobbies pre-release were hard to populate, but I have no concern given that Milestone has made good net code for both the MXGP, and the Monster Energy Supercross games. If you are planning on getting this to play split-screen with your spouse, significant other, roommate, or child, I’ll tell you that you should go for it. Even if you are wanting to play the single-player mode exclusively I’d say you should. If you are wanting to explore the customization and Track Building modes, that’s more of a mixed quality experience.

The Good, The Bad, And the Ugly.

There is a huge amount of customization options in HWU. The design of individual cars’ paint and stickers and even the “Basement” environment that you can build and race tracks in are customizable. In such a way that I have no doubt we’ll eventually see further customization options for sale as DLC. The other four environments are interesting in their own right, they just aren’t customizable like the Basement is. My one critique of this Basement editor is that at launch there aren’t all that many options. Again, DLC should likely change that.

The same goes for the Track Builder. You can build a track completely from scratch in any of the main environments and an additional empty room with no furniture or decorations. Think of “Sandbox” from Halo 3. The problem I struggled with is that the console controls for these are all varying degrees of infuriating. The Basement least so, it’s mostly just a series of menus, though I did find it much less engaging than I would have liked. The Track Builder, on the other handm was the most frustrating to navigate effectively with a controller.

When you start the Track Builder for the first time there is a decent tutorial on the most bare bones aspects of what a track requires to be published and used. However the actual controls of building a track felt like a poorly designed puzzle game in their own right and I gave up several times trying to understand what to do. This could be seen as a good or a bad thing I suppose. The whole process can feel extremely technical and imprecise. So for people who understand it and/or are playing on a mouse and keyboard, I imagine they could design some really interesting complex stuff. But for those of us playing on a console, it’s going to be a much more difficult process to put anything cool together. It’s a little bit of a shame as the TrackMania influence is obvious, and it feels like the restrictions of a gamepad are going to hold this aspect back for most players.

The Livery editor, their term for the car editor, is in the middle on ease of inputs, but I was able to get used to it enough to create some car skins that I thought were cool. It’s very similar to the body shop in the Midnight Club games from Rockstar. (Another great racing series that seems to have been woefully forgotten.) A wide range of color and material options for the paint job that you then can put up to a ridiculous number of stickers on. The stickers range from the expected Hot Wheels logos and animal drawings to various shapes and English letters in both capital and lowercase formats. I’m excited to see what the really creative players do with it. It has precision issues like the Track Builder but I found it much more forgiving.

Light My Nitro

All in all I would say that Hot Wheels Unleashed isn’t all it wants to be, but it’s a fantastic arcade racer if that’s your primary interest. The fact that it uses Blind Boxes as your main way of getting new cars is a downside in that you can, and I have, gotten duplicates. Thankfully though, they allow you to sell or break down the duplicates for one of the game’s two currencies to use elsewhere. And they also have a rotating “featured” list of cars you can buy outright, but there’s only a handful available at a time and most are going for more than twice the gold coins a blind box costs.  It all feels like a way to compromise between the desire to sell microtransactions without making the game feel like it just has its hand out all the time, and these days I guess that’s the best you can ask for. It should be noted that I found earning currency and unlocking blind boxes in the single-player effective enough to build a decent collection of cars without spending any additional money.

I’m giving Hot Wheels Unleashed a 8.5 out of 10. If all you care about is the racing itself it might be a little higher, but the issues with the controls in the Track Builder and a few other small issues here and there make the score for the whole product a solid 8.5. Hopefully people are able to see past or even embrace the less than stellar parts because ultimately I think this game is worth playing and I think that for fans of arcade racing, it’s a must-play. I’m pleased that it lived up to my expectations on that front. Hopefully we’ll see a resurgence in arcade racing on this generation of consoles but whether or not that happens I’m glad we have this to either kick it off or hold us over. Maybe Milestone could talk with Rockstar about doing the next Midnight Club game before they make another one of these. Now wouldn’t that be something.

Score: 8.5/10

Pros:

  • The Racing Itself
  • Hot Wheels Aesthetic Done Well
  • Livery Customization
  • Great Music

Cons:

  • Control Frustrations in the Track Builder and Livery Editor
  • Blind Boxes (even if you do earn them by playing single player)
  • Unable to Unlock Premade Tracks through Multiplayer

The Last of Us 2 Multiplayer Is Being Worked on, and Naughty Dog to Reveal More “When It’s Ready”

With yesterday’s The Last of Us Day coming and going, we didn’t exactly get any DLC for the main game, or any announcement for The Last of Us 2’s multiplayer mode, but we did get an update (sort of) from Naughty Dog.

Posting on the studio’s official website, Rochelle Snyder of Naughty Dog gave a status update on The Last of Us 2 multiplayer mode. While no details were shared, the studio confirmed that they are working on it, and more info will be shared when the studios is ready.

In short, we’re working on it – we see the community comments as many of you clamor for multiplayer and want updates. For now, we’ll say that we love what the team is developing and want to give them time to build out their ambitious project, we’ll reveal more when it’s ready! To that end, we’ve been busy growing our team inside the kennel since The Last of Us Part II launched and are currently in full swing of hiring for MP-related positions (hint hint), so if you or somebody you know qualifies for anything you see on our jobs page, apply!

That’s about it. Given the size of the studio, gamers shouldn’t be worried that the multiplayer mode of the The Last of Us 2 might take up resources for a new game, or sequel.

Hopefully, we’ll get a proper info dump and maybe even release for the mode in 2022.

In other The Last of Us 2 news, battle royale assets were unearthed in the game’s files, though this doesn’t guarantee that we’re going to get a The Last of Us 2 battle royale mode.

Ti Games has released the FIST Forged in Shadow Torch update 1.04 (PS5 version 1.004) patch, and it’s for bug fixes! Check out the full patch notes below.

FIST Forged in Shadow Torch Update 1.04 Patch Notes | Fist Forged in Shadow Torch Update 1.004 Patch Notes | FIST Update 1.004 Patch Notes:

Here’s what’s new per the studio:

Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed a bug that cannot load the game from a save data if the game is saved at a specific save point in Underground Lake.
  • Fixed a bug that a specific door in Mine has a chance not to open.
  • Fixed a bug that the Trophy “Liberator”has a not not to pop.
  • Fixed a bug that has a chance not to be able to buy data disks from Flip.

If you haven’t tried FIST yet, go check out our review where we give it a glowing score, and state, “F.I.S.T. Forged In Shadow Torch rethreads a lot of familiarity of the Metroidvania genre, but it does so gracefully that fans of the genre will no doubt come to love its offering. Its challenging, fun-filled combat will undoubtedly serve as a highlight, as with it’s engaging exploration, and charming story and characters. Ti Games debut title is one not to skip out on, and is rousing continuation to the PlayStation Heroes Project, proving that you don’t need to be a big studio to pull of high production values into a game”

The Last of Us HBO Series Gets First Teaser Image for TLOU Day

The Last of Us HBO Series gets its very first teaser image for TLOU Day — with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey seen for the very first time as Joel and Ellie!

The image, shared by Naughty Dog via their social media accounts, sees Pascal’s Joel and Ramsey’s Ellie looking towards a hill with the remains of a crashed plane that they might explore and scavenge supplies from.

Currently in production and being developed by Chernobyl director Craig Mazin and TLOU series creator Neil Druckmann, The Last of Us tells the story of a world that has fallen to a fictional cordyceps virus that turns its infected victims into zombie like cannibalistic creatures. Joel and Ellie are among the survivors who are trying to live and adapt to the new world, where society has all but crumbled and humanity can be its own worst enemy. When Ellie proves to be immune to the virus and may hold the key to a possible cure, she and Joel embark on a journey through the post-apocalyptic landscape that changes both of them forever.

We reported that Naughty Dog was going to show all new content on The Last of Us Day. Looks like they delivered!

The Last of Us TV series is set to debut some time in 2022.

EPOS GTW 270 Hybrid Review – Ear Buddies

While EPOS has been synonymous with Sennheiser for the past few years, the company (EPOS) has released its own standalone gaming audio product with the EPOS GTW 270 Hybrid — a wireless earbud that’s specifically made for gaming, though mostly for listening rather than chatting (more on that in a bit). However, the earbuds do have some redeeming factor that makes it worth a look for those looking for something super portable for gaming that can double as a headset for mobile phones.

Premium Feel

The EPOS GTW 270 Hybrid costs a cool $199, and just a few minutes after using the device, you’ll know why. The earbuds themselves are weighty in the sense that they don’t feel cheap or plastic-y, with the earpiece coming with three different sized rubber tips, so users can choose which ones they want to make it fit snugly in their ears.

Even the actual case, which is made out of metal, feels premium. It has a matte finish, and has a magnetic clasp that even has the EPOS brand on the underside when you open it. The battery indicator to know how much charge the case itself holds for your earbuds is in front of the case, and lights up blue with five dots to indicate the level of juiece it has left.

Rounding out the case, there’s a USB-C charging plug at the back that gives the charging case and buds a rather minimal but classy look and feel.

Tech Specs

Build and Battery

The case is made of metal and has a premium feel to it specially when compared to most buds out on the market in its price point. It will likely won’t age as good as its counterparts because it will scratch and dent easier. The buds themselves are made of good quality plastic and is rated as IPX5 rating making it safe from those accidental spills while gaming. They are pretty comfortable even when using them for extended periods of time. The battery can last you 5 hours and another 3 cycles in the charging case for a total of 20 hours.

Hearing Beat

The Audio quality was great for what it was designed for. The latency of these buds have got to be among the best out there given that it uses aptX. Using the dongle during gaming sessions I could hear footsteps and shot direction with accuracy. The soundstage is pretty wide and the bass response isn’t muddy. Out of the box the sound preset has a V profile, which is apt for it being gamer centric. When listening to music is where the EPOS lags behind the Jabra 75t and Samsung buds pro. You will definitely hear the difference when listening to songs with heavy vocals. The volume of the mids is not the issue but plainly how it sounds. I know sound is subjective but to my ears it was just isn’t close.

What’s in the box

  • EPOS GTW 270 Hybrid earbuds
  • Charging carry case
  • Bluetooth dongle
  • USB Type-A male to USB Type-C female dongle extension cable
  • USB Type-A male to USB Type-C male charging cable
  • Four silicone earbud tips
  • Silicone Bluetooth dongle case
  • Instructions and quick start manual

Talking Point…

I tested the GTW270 by using discord and other in game chats. The noise cancellation wasn’t good as the mic picked up a significant amount of background noise such as the keyboard strokes and air conditioning. My voice from the other end sounded very tinny and I had to crank up the gain so that my squad could hear me. For a lack of better comparison, it was described to sound like being in a bathroom without the minimal echo. I compared the mic with the Jabra 75T and Samsung Buds pro given that their price is in the same ballpark. Both of them could run circles around the EPOS because of better ambient noise rejection and voice quality. The only positive with it is that when the gain is turned up my squad can hear me clearly, it’s just that the sound wasn’t great.

Audio quality

The Audio quality was great for what it was designed for. The latency of these buds have got to be among the best out there given that it uses aptX. Using the dongle during gaming sessions I could hear footsteps and shot direction with accuracy. The soundstage was pretty wide and the bass response was not muddy. You will definitely hear the difference when listening to songs with heavy vocals. I know sound is subjective but to my ears it was just isn’t close.

The AptX codec only works when you are not using voice chat. When you do, things are routed to the conventional Bluetooth connection.

Conclusion:

If I was looking to buy a dedicated true wireless earphone for just gaming I would consider this because of its top tier latency performance. On the other hand if I was looking for something that I can use everyday for calls, workouts etc. there are a number of better options out there specially at the $200 retail mark. However, if you want a middle-ground of something that is good for gaming and something you can tote for everyday use? The EPOS GTW 270 should be on your radar.

Pros:

  • Top notch latency via dongle (AptX)
  • Premium look and feel of the alloy charging case
  • Generous set of accessories
  • Good sound detail for gaming
  • Total battery life is good at 20 hours

Cons:

  • AptX only works if you don’t use the microphone
  • The charging case gets damaged easily and may look older sooner
  • Sound quality for Music isn’t that great compared to other true wireless earphones in the same price point
  • Microphone voice quality isn’t the best. Noise suppression is virtually absent

Those looking to play Diablo 2 Resurrected, you’ll have to do so offline, as Blizzard has taken the Diablo 2 Resurrected servers down for planned maintenance today! This announcement was made on the game’s forums, so don’t be alarmed.

Update (October 9, 2021): If you’re here this October 9, we have confirmed today’s outage, and reporting on it here. That post will be updated throughout the day until the issue is solved.

Diablo 2 Resurrected Down for Maintenance – September 26:

Update: Blizzard has mentioned that maintenance has concluded, but the studio is awware of characters getting stuck in clsoed games. We’ll update the post as more news develops.

Here is the message from the Community Manager:

Hello everyone,

At 10:30 AM (PDT) we will begin server maintenance (across all platforms) that will last approximately 2-3 hours. This will only impact half of the servers affected, as we’re restarting the servers to deploy a fix for the character lock issue.

As we approach the deploy time (10:30 AM PDT), we recommend that you log off prior to the servers restarting to avoid losing character progress.

Rumor: PlayStation Plus October 2021 Lineup Leaks

It seems that the next slate of PlayStation Plus games have leaked out, and thanks to French community forum Dealabs, we know the three games that will supposedly be available on October 5. Here’s the potential PlayStation Plus October 2021 lineup.

PlayStation Plus Free Games October 2021:

Hell Let Loose  | PS5

Hell Let Loose is a resource-based strategic war simulator that features open battles of up to 100 players. The massive 4km maps are divided up into large sectors allowing for emergent and constantly unique gameplay that pits two forces of fifty players in a fight to the death across fields, bridges, forests and towns on an ever-evolving front line. Maps are a combination of satellite imagery, archival aerial photography and street-level recreation.

Mortal Kombat X | PS4

Mortal Kombat X combines unparalleled, cinematic presentation with all new gameplay. For the first time, players can choose from multiple variations of each character impacting both strategy and fighting style.

PGA Tour 2k21 | PS4

Play against the pros. Play with your crew. In PGA TOUR 2K21, you can play by the rules or create your own!

Hell Let Loose will be exclusive to PS5 users, and with the other two available on PS4 and PS5. Due note that Mortal Kombat X is already included for PlayStation 5 owners as part of the PlayStation Plus collection. While that may be odd, and may disprove this leak, Days Gone was also offered as part of the PlayStation Plus April lineup earlier this year, despite being part of the PS5 collection. All this means is that PS4 owners will now have the chance to play this title as part of the subscription.

It’s important to take this information with a grain of salt, as the official PS Plus games for October haven’t been confirmed by Sony just yet. That should be real soon since we’re at the end of the month, so stay tuned!

Uncharted Golden Abyss Original Pitch Saw 13.5M Budget, Multiplayer Originally Conceptualized to Be Mafia Wars-Like

For those who played Uncharted Golden Abyss on the PlayStation Vita, you may remember that post-launch the game received a multiplayer update. Now it wasn’t exactly what many were expecting as it came in the form of a card game, rather than one similarly featured in Uncharted 2. Well, as it turns out, this may not have been the original vision of Bend Studios as it has been revealed that the studio originally pitched something more akin to the hit social game, “Mafia Wars” for Uncharted Golden Abyss multiplayer.

In a newly published (allegedly) greenlight presentation by Bend Studios, the studio details a private meeting that took place at Sony on October 13, 2009, two years before the PlayStation Vita, and Uncharted Golden Abyss were released. In the short five-minute presentation we got an early look at a prototype for a new Uncharted game that would later become Golden Abyss.

Codenamed Uncharted NGP (Next Generation Portable,) the project’s original pitch wasn’t all that much different from the final release of Golden Abyss. It was to be set in Central America with the story focused on finding the lost city of Quivira with Nathan Drake, Elena Fisher, and Victor Sullivan all returning.  Both Sully and Nate returned in the final release, however Fisher would be replaced with Marisa Chase, a new character introduced in Golden Abyss.

The video presentation went on to show off various gameplay features, and how Bend Studios was planning on utilizing all the PS Vita features. This included its camera, the touchscreen, back touchpad, gyro features, amongst others.

What’s more, the studio detailed that Uncharted NGP would have a total budget of $13.5 million dollars. For comparison, both Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves had a $20 million dollar budget. According to the slides, in order for the studio and publisher to break even with a $4.5 million in global marketing spending, they would need to sell a total of 647K units, with a 15% ROI (return on investment) set at 744K units, and 35% ROS (return on sale) at 1.08 million units. As reported by Gamingbolt in June of 2012, Golden Abyss had achieved a total of 500,000 units sold world-wide.

Take that info as you want, though it is important to realize this this was a pitch presentation to Sony, and not exact specifics of the actual budget gained for the project. Bend Studios could have gotten more, they could have gotten less. Furthermore, these estimated were based off an expected selling price point of $32, whereas the final release sold for $49.99. Even with inflation accounted for the two years it took to release, that still puts it a little under $17 more than originally expected. If my math is correct (647K units times 32 for break-even price, divide by 50 for new units sold till break even,) and going based off the previous budget info, Golden Abyss should have broken even sometimes in 2012 with some investments spent returning. However, retail cuts aren’t accounted for, which the original $32 could have taken so it’s hard to say if the title did indeed “break-even” or make the company a profit.

While that’s all cool new information to learn about, one of the more exciting parts of the presentation was the one pertaining to how the team had plans for full social integration where players would compete with one another for fame while collecting unique and rare sets of artifacts. That doesn’t sound very far off from the Uncharted Fight For Fortune card game that released soon after.

Upon further inspection of the content included with the presentation, there were additional cliff notes that expanded on what this mode was about, including some real-world augmented reality aspects.

Combine your skills with players around the world to discover, identify, and collect unique and rare sets of artifacts. Compete with players to become the wealthiest and most famous treasure hunter. Utilize NGP based augmented reality to interact with virtual artifacts in the real world!

All of these collectables play into the always-on game, which is all about competing with players world wide to become the wealthiest and most famous treasure hunter:

  • Think Mafia Wars but set in the Uncharted universe utilizing NGP specific features for actions the player must perform to advance in the game.
  • Work online with treasure hunters from around the world to gain funds and experience, while becoming a more adept treasure hunter
  • Operate either as a specialized contractor or as part of a cooperative group
  • Utilize the unique capabilities of the NGP to find and identify artifacts, using AR (Augmented Reality) technology to create a 3D scan of a virtual object, repair a broken vase, or decipher
    an ancient scroll
  • Build your own private collection as you rise through the ranks from treasure hunter to curator of your own private museum
  • Place found artifacts on display in online public museums or private collections to increase your fame or sell them on the black market to amass your fortune

A single screenshot was provided to show off one of the menus.

Uncharted Golden Abyss Multiplayer 2

Certainly much different than the card game we got, though it’s hard to say whether or not this would have had any success. If I gad to hazard a guess, I’m doubtful that it would have helped shift the PS Vita short-lived life.

While there’s no all-new Uncharted game announced for release, Sony did unveil Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection for the PS5 and PC, which houses Uncharted 4: Among Thieves, and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, and is due sometime in 2022.

Battlefield 2042: DICE Producer Talks About Community Management Amid Slow News Roll Out

Frustrated by the dearth of Battlefield 2042 news? You’re not the only one. While DICE has said before that they are going to announce something about the Battlefield 2042 beta “later this month,” some gamers assumed that given we’re in the end of September, that it was any day last week. Unfortunately, nothing about it was announced from Monday to Friday, except for something regarding Battlefield Mobile, which triggered some franchise fans.

Over on Twitter, a new thread (among numerous ones) have singled out DICE Community Manager Adam Freeman’s tweet as the studio “lying.” Here is the said Reddit thread along with the tweet that was mentioned in the thread for relevancy:

Aaand they lied AGAIN… WTF DICE…
byu/hennesch inbattlefield2042

In the same thread, DICE Producer Ben Walke (posting as F8RGE) explained some of the misconceptions regarding a Community Manager’s job, and touched on other things, too. Here’s his message in full:

Hello there,

I’ve seen a lot of threads like this recently and as time goes on, they get more and more aggressive, and that anger gets directed towards Freeman and the rest of the Community team on a personal level. I don’t think that’s fair, but instead of saying “don’t do this”, I wanted to explain a little of my thought process.

Working in Community is probably one of the most misunderstood roles within the industry. While on the surface it’s easy to think that it’s one of the easiest jobs around, from experience I can say it’s not.

You see, the problem with working in Community is that you’re always stuck in the middle. You have everyone looking to you for the answers, and that includes both internal teams and of course your player base. When things go well you end up in a great situation (which is sadly all too rare) where everyone’s wants and needs align.

In times like this, working in Community is at its most enjoyable. After all, you’re around happy people, and it becomes infectious. You ever play a round of your favourite game and everything just clicks? It’s kind of like that.

From experience though, those times are fleeting and my advice to anyone working in Community is always to enjoy them while you can because there’s always something around the corner.

I should note that working in Community is very much an iceberg job, in that the vast majority of your work goes unseen. Back when I was doing Community stuff (hello there /r/starwarsbattlefront, miss you) I would say that the public speaking element of the role was likely less than 10-15% of my work overall.

I used to joke that being a Community Manager is a bit like being a weatherman. You do your best with the information provided but if you say “It’ll be 22C tomorrow”, and then it turns out to be 21C, people start calling you a liar and various other things. It’s a poor analogy, but at a base level, it does kind of fit.

That’s likely the most frustrating part of the whole job, you’re reliant on receiving that information and if you aren’t given it then you are left in limbo. It might also be that you need to wait for other teams as well. I don’t want to go into the whole Marketing machine, but I will say that it’s far more than “send out a tweet”.

Even the simplest thing can be a monstrous effort, needing multiple teams across the world to come together to get it done. Is it a website update? Do you need to source artwork, is the artwork in the right ratios? Can someone write the copy? Then you need a team to localise it. Then the pages need to be built, social teams need to be informed, and customer support is brought up to speed. Do you have any partners? Do you need to let your platform holders know so they can support, do any store pages need an update? One tweet can often turn into a pandatableflip.gif of a process that needs to be followed. Nothing is ever as simple as “just a tweet”.

Let’s take an example I can speak about with some confidence. If you are familiar with my work on Star Wars Battlefront II you will know that we used to release Community Transmissions. In the simplest form, these are just posts on Reddit containing info that we thought players wanted to hear. On average I think it used to take around a month from the first words being written to the CT going live. I’d have it all written in a day, but the rest is of the time is all that process that you need to follow.

There is so much work that goes unseen, it’s that iceberg from a few lines above again.

Of course, Community is just one cog in the machine, and as a cog it’s very hard to turn on your own, you need all the other cogs to be turning to allow you to make your rotations. If those cogs aren’t moving, you’re stuck in limbo. Sometimes you just need to wait it out, no matter how much WD40 you apply, time is the only thing that gets things moving.

I’ve never met a Community team that isn’t passionate about their players and want nothing but what is right for them. I’ve seen your Battlefield team go to bat for you with my own eyes, they care and rest assured they likely always will.

I suspect I’m starting to waffle on now. I’m not sure if this helps give some clarity into the realm of Community, and while I no longer work in that field, I hope you appreciate that I couldn’t sit back and not step in and have their backs, because they really do not deserve all the hate that is being thrown their way.

In short, this isn’t to say you shouldn’t or must not talk about things that you aren’t happy with. But do consider that there are people on the other side of the screen who your anger and frustration is directed at, and those people 100% don’t deserve it. None of your Community team are out there lying, everything they say is correct at the time they post it, sometimes the wind changes and you get caught in a sudden rain shower. All of them are doing everything they possibly can to make you happy.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading and I guess this is where I do my best Lars impression and say, See you on the Battlefield.

Ben

While it is frustrating that we haven’t heard anything from DICE yet, the community (and everyone) needs to know that it’s not just DICE’s call; the studio needs to clear things up with publisher EA before they can relay any info, and this goes with developers too.

Hopefully, we’ll hear something ahout the Battlefield 2042 beta this coming week.

Marvel’s Avengers Klaw Raid Will Be “Unique;” Spider-Man Will Have Story & Cutscenes Confirmed

For those looking forward to Marvel’s Avenger’s first-ever Raid, but concerned that it’ll be too similar to War for Wakanda given players will be tussling with Klaw again, Crystal Dynamics has commented on the Marvel’s Avengers Klaw Raid, and it sounds promising.

In the official Marvel’s Avengers Discord, Senior Producer Dan Matlack (posting as CD_Dan_Matlack) answered a few questions from fans, and confirmed that the Marvel’s Avengers Klaw Raid will feature familiar environments, but be “unique” as well.

Image

Image

In the same Discord chat, Matlack confirmed that the upcoming Spider-Man content for PlayStation gamers will feature story and cutscenes, as it is what the devs call an “event.”

Image

Well, that’s a relief. At least PlayStation gamers will be glad to know that it’s not just a new superhero they’re getting sometime this year, but an actual event that’s complete with its own story.

Audeze Penrose Review – Blossoming Beats

Audeze is back again with yet another headset, and this one is a tad cheaper, and is geared more for console gaming than its higher priced big brother, the Audeze Mobius (read our review of that here). While the Penrose is $100 cheaper,  it is stil an uncompromised premium headset that console users might want to take a look at. How does it perform? Read on for our in-depth Audeze Penrose review.

Design and Features

From a design perspective, the Audeze Penrose features a near identical design as its older and more expensive brother, the Audeze Mobius. The banding is as flexible, the plastic material is as durable, and the ear cup cushioning is as comfortable as its premium version. No cuts there, despite being $100 cheaper, and it certainly feels better suited for console gaming whereas the Mobius was geared towards PC.

Because of the price difference, the Penrose does have differences than its more premium sibling in a few areas, them being surround sound, 3D audio, and the head-tracking capability (a PC-only feature anyway) from the Mobius set.  I am a bit bummed out at the fact that there is no built-in 3D audio, although on both the Xbox and PS5, users can make use of the consoles’ onboard audio engine, such as Tempest or Dolby Atmos for 3D audio. These are great alternatives, and the PS5’s Tempest engine shines exquisitely with the Penrose’s 100mm planar magnetic drivers.

Penrose review 1

The dials on the Penrose feature volume controls for chat (so you can hear yourself) and the incoming sounds. As for connectivity, you can either use Bluetooth, the 3.5mm analog cable, or the most likely option, the USB wireless dongle.

Both the PlayStation and Xbox variants of the Penrose come with this USB dongle, and perhaps where the Penrose does have an upper hand over the Mobius is the ease of wireless connectivity. In order to use the Mobius as a wireless headset, you need to use Bluetooth, otherwise you’re stuck with using one of the cable connectivity options. The Penrose fixes that by providing you with an easy to plug USB dongle that not only works on consoles, but on PC as well.

Another improvement that the Penrose has over the Mobius is that it features a longer battery life, although it’s not by much. Whereas the Mobius could hold a charge up to 10 hours, the Penrose ups that to 15 hours on a single charge. Like I said, not much but it is a step in the right direction, and all considering the drivers used in both the Penrose and Mobius, that actually isn’t all that bad.

The Microphone is really the big change here. It still maintains the same flexible boom arm seen in the Mobius so users can adjust the mic close or away, but the difference is the shape of the mic itself. The Mobius offered more of a rounded rectangle shape, whereas the Penrose had a circle end. I’m not sure if this actually improves anything if I am honest, but it is something I thought should be pointed out. It is still detachable though, which is always a major plus.

So while the Penrose does lack a few features from its older brother, and is cheaper, Audeze has made an effort a bit to try and improve in some areas. They aren’t big improvements, but they’re welcome ones, and in a market filled with many headsets, it’s actually nice seeing one for a change that feels largely comparable to its premium predecessor.

Comfortability is the same great feeling from the Mobius in the Penrose, and the fit is snug and airtight, keeping all sounds inside the ear cup in, and sounds outside out. It’s a fantastic design that holds no quality sacrifices when stacked against its older brother. While yes, it is a familiar feeling, it’s one that’s being brought to a more affordable price entry. Although, I suppose the big question is whether or not that holds true for the sound quality.

High Premium Sounds at a Better Price

Being a $100 cheaper, you would expect to see some sort of cutbacks when it came to the Penrose overall audio. Yes, there is no 3D and surround sound built into it, we did make perfect usage of the 3D profiles offered from our PS5 and Xbox Series, and we have to say the Penrose is well suited for these machines.

Plugging the dongle directly into the USB port, pairing only took a matter of turning the set on. Of course, we had to change our audio settings on the consoles, but once we did we were off to experience yet another incredible immersive audio experience that Audeze provided with the Mobius.

Sounds flooded in rich tones playing titles like Deathloop, and Psychonaut 2. Deathloop takes full advantage of the PS5’s Tempest engine, and hearing the high adrenaline rushing ’60s music play as bullets zoomed, and shot past us was just all too exciting. The same could be said about Psychonaut 2 on Xbox, and with the Penrose I never felt like I missed a beat of the moment as my ears were filled with joyful, acid-trip inducing sounds.

With the 100mm drivers in the Penrose, I felt like I was unlocking the full audio capability of these consoles, despite each of them having their own dedicated sets. The difference is vast in these drivers, everything is more clear, more distinct, and more impactful than any 60mm or below non-planar magnetic driver headsets I’ve used in the past.

I would even argue that it may sound better than the Mobius, at least when it comes to the “out of the box” experience. Sounds have better tuning, and felt like they came in with higher range. Not louder, just more detailed. It’s clear (pun intended) to us that the Penrose was better designed for console use than the Mobius, though that doesn’t deter the latter in any way. Because the Mobius is more for PC usage, there are more customizations offered with it. But in a head to head for console connectivity, usage, and performance, I do think the Penrose is the better set. No surprise all considering the console market is the one it’s aimed towards. Regardless, if it’s immersion you seek, then you’ve found the right headset.

As for the microphone quality, I can’t say I heard too many complaints from any of my friends during testing. Feedback provided was that my voice was clear, with background noise kept at a pretty modest low. This was based on the wireless dongle connection, with the wired 3.5mm connection producing better clarity. Of course if you aren’t too big on multiplayer games or joining chat lobbies, the microphone won’t matter much to you and the nice thing is, it’s completely detachable. A great option that I firmly believe every headset out there should have, as not only does it give you the assurance that someone isn’t listening in during a match, but it adds a bit to the overall style of the set by removing an unwanted feature.

Verdict

So with the Penrose, we essentially have a stripped down version of the Audeze Mobius, built specifically for console players. What it lacks won’t be missed due to the systems offering those features, and coming in at $100 cheaper, this is easily one of the best, most affordable planar magnetic driver headsets out there. $300 places it right in that range of being a high-end gaming headset, and comparatively, that does put it in a position against some very tough competitors. However, none of them will produce the immersive quality you get with the Penrose, not as long as they continue using old standardized drivers.

Audeze may produce headsets that are well within the luxury pricing, but they do so knowing that they are producing some of the best on the market. And for console players out there, the Penrose is one of the bests that you won’t regret buying.

Pros:

  • Unmatched sound from the 100mm drivers.
  • comfortable for long use.
  • Improved battery life over the Mobius
  • Truly built for consoles.
  • Easy plug and connect 2.4Ghz wireless

Cons:

  • Lacks built-in 3D and surround sounds. Next-gen consoles resolve this issue, but outside of any other use you are missing out.
