Microsoft Rebrands Xbox Live to Xbox Network; Plans to Drop Subscription Requirement for F2P Games

Xbox Live is no more — at least in name, as Microsoft is changing the Xbox Live name to just the “Xbox Network.” This name change was originally spotted by Xbox beta testers with Microsof tnow confirming the name change.

In a statement sent to The Verge, a Microsoft rep said the following:

“’Xbox network’ refers to the underlying Xbox online service, which was updated in the Microsoft Services Agreement. “The update from ‘Xbox Live’ to ‘Xbox network’ is intended to distinguish the underlying service from Xbox Live Gold memberships.”

While it’s not that big of a change for gamers since it’s just changing “Live” to “Network,” there are more plans brewing that will benefit Xbox gamers, and this includes dropping the subscription requirement for games that are free-to-play (F2P). In the coming months, games like Fortnite, Apex Legends, etc., will no longer require gamers be suscribed to Xbox Live Gold, though Microsoft has not exactly shared when this massive shift will take effect.

Resident Evil and Resident Evil Remake Celebrate Their Anniversaries Today

Prepare to celebrate the world of Survival Horror as we knew it then and know it now, as Resident Evil just turned two and a half decades and celebrates its 25th Anniversary today.

If you ever held a controller on your hand in today’s gaming world, Resident Evil will probably pop up in your search list as one of the most popular video game franchises to play in this day and age… And with good reason. Spawning over a dozen mainline titles and each featuring different characters and story elements, the common themes that bring all of these together is horror and action. For a time RE went through an identity crisis beginning with its fourth sequel that took a more survival action approach… But the game that started it all was more focused on putting fear and tension in your eyes, and Capcom delivered an experience that was similar to Alone in the Dark rather than a first person shooter game like Doom.

First released as Biohazard on March 22, 1996 in Japan for the original Sony PlayStation, the first Resident Evil was the product of a genuine attempt to remake an old NES game but ended becoming something entirely different. Directed by Shinji Mikami and produced by Tokuro Fujiwara, the game draws inspiration from horror films like The Shining and George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead and was molded into a third-person horror adventure that was more of conserving your ammo, evading enemies, and solving puzzles — and coined the genre known as Survival Horror.

Utilizing the power of Sony’s first video game console and CD based technology, Resident Evil became a critical and commercial success upon release. Despite the B-Movie level voice acting and live-action cut scenes, fans were impressed with the level of immersion and action amidst a isolated mansion setting where zombies and all manner of biological creatures could attack you. Plus the story introduces two very likeable protagonists in Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine — who would go on to represent and reappear through the course of the series’ history. RE1 also has the distinction of being one of the best-selling games for the original PlayStation in 1996, right before Final Fantasy 7 was unleashed to the masses the following year.

Coincidentally, March 22 also marks the release date of the Resident Evil Remake back in 2002! One of the then Nintendo Gamecube only exclusives Capcom promised for the company and the system, the game was a complete visual and technical makeover for the original Resident Evil — bringing Survival Horror to a new generation of fans and incorporating a more realistic tone and interpretation of the game. Shinji Mikami returned to direct and once again Chris and Jill’s stories are told during the Mansion Incident — however new elements were added to make this remake a whole new experience for fans, such as the introduction of the mutated Lisa Trevor and the addition of defensive weapons. While the remake did remain exclusive to Nintendo for over a decade, the game would see new life as Resident Evil HD Remaster — which was a high definition port released for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.

With the release of sequels, spin-offs, and appearing in other forms of media including a new reboot movie called Welcome to Raccoon City coming out this year, Resident Evil has stood the test of time these 25 years — and it is all thanks to a game that introduced zombies and a mansion setting to gamers that wasn’t about guns blazing and more of using your head to survive. With Capcom set to release a new installment this year with Resident Evil Village, the franchise is only going to move forward grow even stronger as the fanbase continues to celebrate its legacy.

Happy Anniversary, Resident Evil!

Resident Evil Village Will Have More Weapons Than RE7 According to Capcom

Expect a bigger selection of good things to be on sale when the newest Resident Evil game hits stranger, as Capcom states that the Resident Evil Village will have more weapons than Resident Evil  7 — adding to the anticipation and hype that the sequel will be much larger in content compared its predecessor.

According to tweets posted by DuskGolem, RE Village will contain more weapons for returning protagonists Ethan Winters to use. As the developers of the game note that it’s the first time that the same main character returns for two consecutive games.

As the report states, players will have more free reign on how to play and control Ethan — including the choices of weapons and the loadout they want to have at their disposal when approaching a certain situation. With the presence of The Duke and acting as a seller of goods much like RE4’s The Merchant, players can expect plenty of firepower and tools that will help them in their latest journey into the world of Survival Horror. In many ways, RE Village is a combination of all genres — sticking to the Survival Horror formula of suspense and danger at every turn while also giving players the range and variety that RE4, 5, and 6 had with weapons and equipment purchases.

In related Resident Evil news, the Resident Evil movie reboot just revealed its official title — and it’s called Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.

Apex Legends Update 1.62 March 22 Flies Out, Causes Issues (Update)

While Respawn Entertainment has released a patch for Apex Legends last week for various fixes, the studio has released the Apex Legends update 1.62 March 22 patch today. This is also for fixes, so don’t expect any new content.

Apex Legends Update 1.62 March 22 Patch Notes:

Update: Respawn has released the official patch notes:

Heads up, legends!

Respawn have pushed a client patch for Apex Legends today.

Patch Notes

Improvements

  • Console players can now toggle the survival slot off. If turned off, survival items will only be accessible through the inventory screen and the button will trigger the weapon inspect feature by default. (Source)

Bug fixes

  • Fixed Electric Blue Wattson skin (Source)

The studio has not relayed any gameplay-related changes, but here’s what Respawn has shared:

During our most recent @playapex collection event there was a bug with Wattson’s Electric Blue skin that caused her textures to go missing.

We’ve since shipped the fix and fully refunded anyone who bought the skin before the fix went live. Refunded players keep the fixed skin.

Unfortunately, it seems this issue has caused some issues amongst players too. Here are some from the community:

NO ACCESS TO ALC SETTINGS PS4 patch 3/22/2021
byu/skylexEU inapexlegends

Server issues after update?
byu/GreatAtLosing inapexlegends

Since the latest patch from today 3/22/2021, it‘s not possible to access ALC settings on PS4. On top of that all my settings got set back to default so now I can‘t play. Please let the developers see this. Much love and stay safe

Myself and several others have been experiencing high latency/rubber banding after the update, and this is very abnornal- especially for me, with a decent wired connection. This is on PS4, is anyone else having this issue?

Thanks!

There also seems to be gameplay-related changes as well”

I’m salty about this update.
byu/MonochromeCyanide inapexlegends

They patched the heat shield badge down to 1000 damage after I spent hours grinding it out and finally got the badge.

I get that it was incredibly hard to do without gridning and I’m glad that other people can get the badge but I wish that people who got the 5000 heat shield damage would get something cool added to the badge instead of their hard work being for nothing.

Once Respawn releases the full patch notes, we’ll update the post.

Update: The full patch notes has been released and we’ve updated the post.

SideTrak Solo Freestanding Portable Monitor Review – On-the-Go Gaming Solution

If you’re someone who travels a lot, and also loves taking their gaming devices with them, then chances are you’ve ran into situations where you need a good TV screen. As someone who fits that criteria, I have certainly found myself more times than not having to wrestle with hotel rooms, and their mounted displays with hard-to-reach HDMI ports. It’s not fun, especially for screens flushed against the wall. My solution for the better half of the year was to take my tiny PC monitor with me and use that, but lets face it, no matter how tiny a TV screen or monitor you can get, there will always be the inconvenience of traveling with them, due to the bulkiness and their original intent for stationed viewing.

So to my surprise, there’s actually a line of displays dedicated to removing such annoyances that come with traveling. Meet the SideTrak Portable Monitor, a portable display capable of being powered via USB with connectivity support for consoles along other devices.

What’s in the Box?

Specifications

Refresh Rate: 50/60 Hz Display colors: 262K Colors
Response Time: 30 ms Panel Type: LCD
Aspect Ratio: 16:9 Resolution: 1920 x 1080
Contrast Ratio: 800:1 Brightness: 220 cd/m2
Power Consumption: 8W Panel Surface: Glare (AF)

To start this review off, let’s take a look at the content and set-up of the SideTrak Portable Monitor. First thing first, you have the small, 15.6 inch display that is well protected by the box’s packaging. The material used the houses the display is plastic, with a soft matted feel to it. It might not be the best material in terms of durability, but it’s light enough where it makes carrying easy.

Next we have the connection cables, which are USB-2.0 to USB-C, USB-C to USB-C, and mini-HDMI to full HDMI display cable. The latter two cables are used for powering purposes. Not really a whole lot of components (that’s a good thing,) and the set-up proves to be even less complicated.

Testing this out with a PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X, all you need to do is connect the HDMI cable to a system as with one of the two USB connection types. Don’t worry, as the power required to turn the display on is very low, with the USB ports found on any of those devices being just enough. That’s honestly all there is too it, no initial set-up, no driver or software updates, just direct plug-in play and you’re all set!

As Thin as Paper, as Sharp as a Knife

I do a lot of contract work (non-MP1st related) that requires me to travel all over the United States. My Last gig saw me traveling by vehicle from one end of the country to the other in the dead of winter. Not a fun one to say the least, especially knowing that said locations usually didn’t have any major shopping outlets or the most fun-filled activities.

Understandably I’m not in the most feel at home setting, though it does help to take a piece of it when I do go on these trips. With long periods of boredom inevitably to ensue on my downtime, what better to bring than a gaming console. Of course, it’s second nature of my gamer side to do just that, but one big thing I’ve learned in all my travel is that it’s wise to bring a spare TV screen, especially when staying in towns with not so up-to-date hotels.

Undoubtedly, the big issue with bringing a TV or PC monitor on travel is usually their sheer size, and/or bulkiness. There’s always a looming fear that you may accidentally break it just from driving, which is pretty common for people in the moving business. Plus, it’s not exactly the most inconspicuous item to be walking into a hotel lobby with. Thankfully, the SideTrak Portable Monitor fixes that issue, all while offering a gorgeous picture.

With a screen size of just 15.6 inches and a weight of 1.8lb, the SideTrak Portable Monitor feels like a great convenience to have. While I knew how big the screen was before receiving the unit, what I wasn’t expecting to be surprised by is how damn thin it is. To best compare, it’s almost like an iPad or a Window Surface Pro in terms of size and thickness. And much like those devices, the SideTrak is easily storable, with it fitting nicely in say a laptop case or whatever electronic bag you may use. Just be sure you protect the screen for obvious reasons.

As for the picture quality, the SideTrak Portable sports a 1080P resolution with a refresh rate of 60hz. And I know, it’s not the latest in resolution, but given the size of the SideTrak, this resolution fits just right. Image quality comes in superbly sharp and clear all thanks to pixel density, with the 60hz refresh rate running smoothly. There’s a low amount of latency, so playing games at 60fps (or less) is no problem.

More impressive however is how coloring is handled. Pictures all look vibrant, booming with colors, even with the HDR turned-off. Yes, you read that right, the SideTrak Portable has HDR support, which in my opinion is easily a better feature than a resolution bump.

While the display can also be stood up in portrait mode, I did find that this particular model really isn’t a good fit for it. This is mostly due to the location of the display ports being right on it’s side. Meaning if you wanted to stand it up, then you would have cables facing upwards, only to bend down to plug into whatever device. And it can’t be laying on the port side since it wouldn’t be able to stand. That’s not to say that it’s impossible to set it up in portrait format, it’ll just look a bit ugly. It doesn’t help either that the cables supplied are pretty short, so if you did plan on using this at home as an additional desktop monitor, be sure it’s situated on your desk close to where your PC is.

For me I don’t think that was much of a deal breaker since I prefer the landscape view, but if there was one nagging issue then it’s the menu button. While power has it’s own dedicated button, for whatever reason the menu button is tied to the volume scroll. It felt very flimsy and just trying to access the menu to adjust picture color and HDR proved it as at times it was unresponsive and even sticking. I consider the overall build to be exceptional outside of that volume/menu button.

A Worthy Travel Buddy

Outside of the tiny flaws I found, there really isn’t much to hate about this monitor. While, yes it is on the pricier ($269.99) side of things considering the size of TV you can get for it, there really isn’t much of an alternative when it comes to how easy and convenient it is. Just the fact that I can fit this in the same bag as my laptop, and even my console bag makes this well worth the buy. Beautiful design matched by it’s gorgeous image quality, the SideTrak Solo Freestanding Portable Monitor is the perfect companion to have for those lengthy journeys.

Pros:

  • Beautiful coloring and HDR support.
  • Size is perfect to fit with your laptop in an electronic bag.
  • Easy to set-up, USB powering
  • Smooth 60hz with low-latency.
  • General build quality is great.

Cons:

  • Even though it can be stood up for portrait mode, the power/display inputs location aren’t ideal to be in that position.
  • Volume having a push button for the display menu is unresponsive at times, needing multiple pushes. A dedicated button, at least for source would have been better.
  • Price* – A bit on the pricey end so may deter potential buyers away, though we feel what you get is justifiable

Where to buy?

Solo Pro FHD 15.8”

The SideTrak Ultra Thin Portable Monitor is available for purchase at MSRP of $269.99. A unit was provided for review and marketing purposes via Chic Execs. Product tested for PC and consoles uses. You can read MP1st’s review and scoring policy right here.

Rumor: PlayStation Store for PS3, PS Vita, PSP to Close Down Later This Year

Take this news with a grain of salt and as a rumor for now, but there’s a good chance that Sony and PlayStation are ready to move on from the past — As a report states that the PlayStation Store for the PS3, PS Vita, and PSP is going to close down.

According to The Gamer, all services will cease starting this July for those systems. What that essentially means is that all of the digital games you purchased and are part of those legacy libraries are no longer going to be accessible, as the story points out that Sony is going to make the announcement possibly in the next month or so.

PSP’s and PS3’s stores are to be closed on July 2, while the PS Vita store will stay open until August 27. After those dates, you will no longer be able to purchase digital copies of games or DLC for any of the Sony consoles mentioned above.

First introduced during the life cycle of the PS3, the PlayStation Store is your go to digital shop for all things related to PlayStation, its games, and other forms of media. PlayStation’s portable systems in the PSP and its successor the PS Vita would also incorporate the service — and players could not only access and download new games but also digital releases of classic PSOne games. Now that the PS4 and PS5 have become the dominant systems in the market, it looks Sony is ready to close the curtain on those systems. Nothing has been confirmed yet and nobody knows whether or not players can still access their purchased games if it comes to pass, but don’t be surprised if everything is gone once things are shut down.

Speaking of new PlayStation services, the new PS5 VR controllers were recently revealed and you can take a look at them here.

The Last of Us HBO Series Will Cover The Events of the First Game

Fans of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us franchise who are very much looking forward to the live-action TV series adaptation will be happy to know that The Last of Us HBO series will cover the events of the first game — literally telling the 2013 video game’s story while adding some new and unique content not found in the game itself.

Check out the video interview IGN conducted with the series’ creative director Neil Druckmann, as well as narrative lead Halley Gross.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world where a fictional fungal virus known as the cordyceps virus infects humanity and turns its victims into cannibalistic zombie like creatures, The Last of Us is a heartwrenching survival horror experience — which follows two individuals named Joel and Ellie who must trek across the former United States to deliver a package that may be the key to a cure and salvation of the human race. A hardened survivor with a tragic past, Joel guides and protects the young Ellie against dangers that are infected and human, eventually establishing a father-daughter type relationship that becomes the emotional core of their story.

Previously, we reported that Game of Thrones stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey were cast as Joel and Ellie for HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us. No other details or release window has been projected for the series yet as it’s currently in production.

Resident Evil Movie Reboot Is Officially Titled Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City

The Resident Evil Movie Reboot has been given a name, and is officially going to be titled Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City!

As revealed by director Johannes Roberts during an interview with IGN during the SXSW online event, the new title is a callback to the familiar city that serves as the setting of the original Resident Evil games — particularly Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. Check out the video interview below.

Adapting the first two games of the series, Roberts’ Resident Evil film will be a fresh start for the live-action movie franchise and will have no connection to the Milla Jovovich movies. Firmly set in the game’s timeline in the year 1998, the first Resident Evil took place in an isolated mansion located in the outskirts of Raccoon City, but the reboot will also cover the story and events of the second game when the city falls to the zombie outbreak.

Kaya Scodelario of The Maze Runner films has been cast as Claire Redfield, with Robbie Amell playing her brother and longtime series lead Chris Redfield. Hannah John-Kamen will also play fan-favorite character Jill Valentine, while Avan Jogia is the rookie RPD cop Leon S. Kennedy. The cool and calculating Albert Wesker will be played by Tom Hopper, while Dr. William Birkin will be brought to life by the talented Neal McDonough.

This week also marks the official celebration of Resident Evil’s 25th Anniversary, and RE fan and game writer Alex Aniel recently detailed the coverage Famitsu made of the year long celebration Capcom has planned for the series.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will be released in theaters this coming September 3.

Rumor: Battlefield 6 Reveal Set for May

As we learned recently, Battlefield 6 is currently targeting a Holiday 2021 release with the reveal coming this Spring according to EA. While no firm month was confirmed by the publisher, it seems that a new rumor has surfaced that points to a possible Battlefield 6 reveal happening in May.

Coming fresh off a GamesBeat livestream, industry’s insider, Jeff Grub claims that EA is currently looking at May for a Battlefield 6 reveal.

“Things are still fluid. They haven’t announced anything publicly yet. But my understanding is that they’re probably looking at May.”

To add a bit of fuel to this rumor, well known and reliable leaker Tom Henderson also posted a “prediction” with the date landing on May 7.

Of course this should all be taken with a grain of salt, since nothing has been confirmed by EA or DICE regarding Battlefield 6. Heck, we don’t even know if it will be called Battlefield 6.

Current rumors put the setting of Battlefield 6 to be taken place in modern time, which is a contrast to the last two mainline Battlefield games, Battlefield 5 and Battlefield 1. We do know that DICE is leading the project, with DICE LA lending support for the game’s live-services, while racing studio Criterion has also been confirmed to be helping DICE Sweden with development. No official game details have yet to be revealed, but rumors have surfaced that it will feature free-to-play elements, and have “Levolution on steroids.”

Hopefully this is one rumor that is true, or at least an earlier reveal is planned. May isn’t that far away, so we should be hearing on some official news from EA real soon. Again, for now take this rumor with a grain of salt, but we will be sure to update you all if we hear anything more, so stay tuned!

Unofficial Battlefield 3 Battle Royale Mod Gameplay Teaser Fires Out

If you didn’t dig Battlefield 5’s Firestorm battle royale mode, then the Battlefield modding community might have just the thing! Modding group KVN has put it upon themselves to develop an unofficial Battlefield 3 battle royale mode using the Venice Unleashed mod which was released in December last year.

Note that this is in no way official or vouched for by DICE or EA, so understandably, the development process is taking a lot longer. The team did release a gameplay teaser though, and it’s shaping up something fierce it seems.

It’s just 14 seconds long, but there’s actual gameplay sprinkled throughout which should be a godsend for Battlefield fans hoping we get a proper battle royale mode. The mod team did roll out an FAQ on their Discord which touches on some of the key things would-be players might be asking.

FAQ:

– Do I need to own Battlefield 3 to play this mod?
Yes, you need to own Battlefield 3 Premium or Vanilla with (currently) the End Game DLC.

– Does the steam version of Battlefield 3 Premium also work?
Yes!

– Where can I download it? How can I play?
You can’t play yet but once it’s done you could play this mod trough (sic) Venice Unleashed: https://veniceunleashed.net/

– When will it be released?
TBA

– How can I contribute?
Currently the only thing we need is time, but we will need playtesters in the future (we will notify everyone about the playtests here on our Discord).

– How does this compared to any other battle royale game (like pubg, firestorm, apex etc.)?
While developing we wanted to stay as close to the Battlefield 3 experience as possible for example the only character physics code we modified currently is the free fall physics after you jumped out of the plane (so you could land further).

We do not want to modify any of the weapons as well, we just not gonna use all of them and group them according to their OPness. (We have 3 tiers)

The revive, health, ammo, armor system is sill in development so we don’t want to set in stone anything yet.

We have a working ping system for teams, and a merchant/shop system is in the works.

– Can I host my own server?
We try to develop this mod to be as configurable as possible but we think that in the first couple of months all servers should stick to the same settings so players won’t get confused joining from one server to the other. But we will talk more in depth about hosting near the release!

Once more details are shared, we’ll let the community know.

Marvel’s Avengers MCU-Inspired Skins Set for Release in Spring

While Crystal Dynamics confirmed that the team was working on some Marvel’s Avengers MCU-inspired skins from their recent roadmap, what wasn’t made clear was when they were being released. Well, now it seems we have a better timeline as they are set to drop with another DLC later this year.

In yet another developer stream for Marvel’s Avengers, Crystal Dynamics’s Philippe Therien confirmed via Twitch chat that players can expect some Marvel’s Avengers MCU-inspired skins to drop right once the The Red Room DLC releases, which is slated for this Spring.

Further clarification was addressed with Therien stating that the skin drops start with the Red Room. Sadly no further information was offered concerning the skins, but at least we now know to expect them sooner, rather than on the later, Summer side of the roadmap. We’ll be sure to keep you all updated on any new development, but for now, hopefully you are enjoying the recent Hawkeye content drop along with the next-gen versions of the game!

Rainbow Six Parasite Gameplay From Tech Test Leaks Out

Following our report yesterday that Ubisoft was holding a Rainbow Six Paraiste (also known as Quarantine) tech test this weekend, it seems some people involved in the test didn’t care much for the NDA (non-disclosure agreement) that they signed, as one gamer even streamted Rainbow Six Parasite gameplay!

Check out the gameplay on Facebook Gaming (via WhatIfGaming), where an hour of gameplay footage from the PvE shooter can be seen. There’s also six operators listed below confirmed to be in the game so far, doubt chances are high that this will go up given there’s not a lot of info about the game known currently.

  • Tachanka
  • Ela
  • Finka
  • Lion
  • Alibi
  • Vigil

Same as Rainbow Six Siege, Parasite seems to give roles to operators, which means each character has an ability that lets them standout from the pack. One such role is Ela, who’s described as a Stunner/Pusher. Players can also expect your standard weapon customization and more.

Once we know more details, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.

Marvel’s Avengers Play Solo & Without AI Is Being “Pursued” by Crystal Dynamics, More Info Coming Soon

While Marvel’s Avengers can be played solo (meaning you don’t need other people controlling your other teammates), you really can’t go at it alone without party members controlled by AI. It looks like that might be changing soon, as Crystal Dynamics Lead Combat Designer Vincent Napoli confirmed that the studio is looking to implement a Marvel’s Avengers play solo feature (with no AI), is being “pursued” by the studio.

This was confirmed by the developer over on the game’s subreddit where a fan asked whether an option to play Warzones and missions without AI is a possiblity.

Ability to play some warzones and missions without any AI (or less than 4)
byu/iCoreyTimmons inPlayAvengers

This was Napoli’s response:

Can safely say that this is something we have always wanted to pursue and are now, in fact, doing so! More info should be coming soon!

Hopefully, in this case “soon” means in the next few weeks. In other Marvel’s Avengers news, don’t forget to check out the game’s 2021 roadmap (which we’ve updated) where it’s confirmed that Black Panther is the next hero coming our way.

Would you want to be able to choose how many teammates you can have in each mission or would just that frustrate players? Share your thoughts down below.
