DICE Reveals New Star Wars Battlefront Gameplay Details And Concept Art

Digital Illusion CE’s highly anticipated Star Wars first-person shooter is still a ways out, but a small glimpse of what the studio is working on every now and then is giving fans of the iconic universe much to look forward to.

Better yet is what’s in store. According to EA CFO Blake Jorgensen during the company’s most recent earnings call, there’s “More to come in the next couple of months on [Star Wars Battlefront] as more about the movie comes out as well as more about our title comes out.” According to him, EA would like to treat Battlefront in the same vein the company has treated Battlefield titles in recent years. “You should consider that a very large activity for us [this year] and a very large focus — similar to how we’ve thought about Battlefields in the past,” he added.

For now, IGN managed to squeeze a few new details — and even some new concept art — out of Star Wars Battlefront Design Director Niklas Fegraeus.

The scale of our maps and modes offer a great variety,” Fegraeus explained. Hoth and Endor, for example will offer different gameplay experiences.

“We have actually made the decision to specifically tailor certain maps to certain game modes,” Fegraeus continued, “and what we get from that is not only incredibly varied scales, but also gameplay that will allow players to live out some of their most memorable Star Wars battle fantasies.”

He says that “Perhaps the hardest part about bringing the franchise back is managing expectations.”

Star Wars fans, including ourselves, are incredibly passionate about the universe. Each of us have our own personal favorites. However, with the talent we have here at DICE, the Frostbite technology at our fingertips, and the fantastic working relationship we have with Lucas, I believe we will deliver a Star Wars experience that excites fans around the world and gives them the chance to play out battles in some of the most iconic locales in the series history.”

Here’s a look at what Star Wars Battlefront’s art department has been cooking up.

Screen Shot 2015-01-29 at 2.17.53 PM

Jorgensen reaffirmed earlier this week that Star Wars Battlefront is still on schedule to launch this Holiday season in close proximity to the upcoming new movie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The Battlefield Hardline Open Beta arrives this Tuesday, February 3, EA and Visceral Games announced today.

Open to all players on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, the Beta will launch with three playable multiplayer maps, three playable multiplayer modes, and unlimited access to Hardline’s arsenal of weapons and gadgets through the beta’s un-capped unlock progression.

“There’s nothing more valuable to our team than the relationship we have with our community. Their passion feeds our passion and their feedback has definitely helped make Hardline a better game,” said Steve Papoutsis, General Manager of Visceral Games and Executive Producer of Battlefield Hardline. “We want them to play the hell out of the beta next week and trust that they’ll keep that feedback coming so we can continue to fine tune the game.”

The beta will be available for six days, until February 8. UPDATE: It will vary in size; 10-11 GB on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, and just under 4 GB on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Origin users can begin pre-loading the beta on February 2 at 10AM Pacific. You can read the entire FAQ right here.

Reptile Returns In Mortal Kombat X, Check Out His Reveal Trailer

After Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon revealed late last week that we will get a pair of new characters reveal sometime in the coming days, fans of the franchise have been speculating on “who’s next?”

Thanks to MKX’s latest reveal trailer, we finally get at least one answer. Check out the footage above to see the returning character, Reptile, in action.

His return shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. Boon did drop a few hints that he was going to be revealed in the last 24 hours using the “moon”, which is synonymous with the green “ninja”.

If Reptile isn’t your cup of tea, NetherRealm Studios will also be revealing another character this upcoming Thursday on their official Twitch channel in a live stream that is set to kick off at 4 PM EST.

Mortal Kombat X will be available on April 14 for the PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One platforms.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel – Get Ready To Meet Aurelia The Baroness This Week

With Gearbox Software’s panel during PAX South now officially over and without any major announcements like the supposed “Borderlands 3” coming to fruition, the studio didn’t exactly leave fans empty handed.

During the panel, Gearbox officially announced the next set of DLC for their recently released Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel title, which is none other then Aurelia The Baroness, who you may remember being leaked just weeks after The Pre-Sequel launched. She will finally be a playable character that’s set to release very soon.

How soon? According to Gearbox, Sir Hammerlock’s sister will be playable this coming Tuesday on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 for $9.99 USD. Those who have purchased the Season Pass for The Pre-Sequel will receive The Baroness character class at no additional charge.

In addition to The Pre-Sequel’s additional character, Gearbox also hinted that the upcoming campaign add-on will be set inside the mind of Claptrap. Unfortunately, no other information was shared.

For those who are curious as to what Aurelia’s skill tree will look like, we’ve got you covered.

4-Player RPG Brawler Grand Class Melee 2 Hits Early Access Next Month, Steam Key Giveaway

After a rough ride, including an unsuccessfully funded Indiegogo campaign back in 2012, the independent Canadian trio Gigatross Games is back with the follow up to their charming 2011 Xbox Live title, Grand Class Melee.

Grand Class Melee 2, like its predecessor, is a class-based RPG arena fighter where players select from over 60 character classes to do battle through eight rounds of 4-player combat in the vein of classic console multiplayer. Combatants earn new abilities every round as they progress through their class’ skill tree.

gcm2_classtree_costumed_eighters-1

At the core of its gameplay is a slash, thrust, and parry melee system coupled with abilities selected from one main class and one lower class. Other features include bots, teams, custom scoring, procedural biome battlefields and other game style tweaks that keeps each fight fresh.

Since 2012, the studio has self-funded and built Grand Class Melee 2 from the ground up twice. After a successful Greenlight campaign at the end of 2014, Gigatross is now ready to get things rolling with a Steam Early Access period beginning this February 2. Modes included are Online Multiplayer, Survival, and Practice Mode.

An Xbox 360 release via Xbox Live Indie Games is “in the cards,” but the studio’s focus now is on Grand Class Melee 2’s Steam launch. You’ll find the game’s Steam page here and a few more details on the game’s classes right here.

In the meantime, Gigatross has been kind enough to hand us a batch of Grand Class Melee 2 Early Access Steam keys, so make sure you’re following @MPFirst on Twitter where we’ll be handing out keys over the weekend EDIT: closer to launch!

Mortal Kombat X Co-Creator Hints At Possible New Character Reveals Soon [Updated]

With a few months left until the release of the highly anticipated fighter from NetherRealm Studios, the Mortal Kombat X team has been rather busy as of late in terms of character reveals, including the return of both Kitana and Kung Lao.

It appears that the studio isn’t quite done with the reveals for this month either. Recently, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon dropped a very interesting tweet as to who might be revealed next:

At first glance, it may seem that Boon is hinting at Nightwolf, who is known to wield a bow in battle. However, upon further inspection of the above teased image, it appears that it’s actually another part of Boon’s old ‘boots’ teaser. As “PainForge” over at the Test Your Might forums pointed out, when both pictures are put together, it seems like the character is actually holding a hybrid of a bow and a staff:

25kha54

Unfortunately, Boon hasn’t shared any details as to when we can expect the next character to be revealed, but he teased that “next week is going to be rather fun.” Stay tuned for updates! Mortal Kombat X will be released on April 14 for the PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One platforms.

Update

And another hint from Boon, this time hinting at not one, but two character reveals next week:

Rainbow Six Dev Explains How Recoil Will Affect Weapons In Rainbow Six Siege

Weapon handling and weapon recoil is always a hot topic in first-person shooters. After all, it makes or breaks the feel of gameplay and will often dictate the game’s required level of skill to become proficient in firefights.

Realistic gun mechanics have always been core to the Rainbow Six series, which is why community developer Genevieve “Livinpink” Forget and Gameplay Programmer Adam Crawley took a moment to explain how recoil will work in Rainbow Six Siege.

In Rainbow Six Siege, bullets will originate from the center of a player’s screen, meaning “bullets will actually go to exactly where it looks like they should go,” Crawley explained. While aiming down sight, bullets will travel precisely to where the weapon is aiming, though players will have to manage a ‘random cone of fire’ when firing from the hip.

Weapon recoil will be based on patterns in an additive system, meaning the recoil on each and every weapon will adhere to a specific tendency, like firing up and to the right, for example. The gun and camera will readjust after every shot. This will allow players to learn patterns and correct the recoil path by compensating in the opposite direction with either a joystick or mouse.

According to Crawley, the studio is aiming for a weapon recoil system that is “challenging to use but also learnable and controllable.”

Have a look at the video above for examples and be sure to drop your thoughts in the comment section below.

Rainbow Six Siege is due to launch sometime this year on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

New “Doubles Skirmish” Game Mode Enters Destiny’s PvP Arena

Earlier this week, Destiny‘s PvP mode, also known as the Crucible, was updated with a new game mode centered around teams of only two Guardians.

Doubles Skirmish, as it’s called, takes the 3v3 Skirmish game mode and sheds off a player on each side, scaling it down to 2v2. Heavy ammo appears only once per match and, as before, revives are enabled.

2v2

“Your Supers will come back more slowly because you’re not getting as many actions per minute as you would in a game of Control,” Destiny Design Lead Lars Bakken explained in Bungie’s latest weekly update.

“The goal here was about taking the rules we already have and mixing them up to create a fresh experience,” he added. “Each player has the full weight of winning or losing placed squarely on their shoulders and nobody to blame but themselves… or their teammate. No pressure.”

No word if further updates are planned for Destiny’s PvP, but you’ll be sure to find the news here if we catch wind.

Have you tried Doubles Skirmish yet? What are your thoughts?

Microsoft Teases May 4 Reveal, “Call of Duty: World At War 2” Speculation Ensues [Updated]

Update

Looks like we missed this update from Xbox Canada Community Manager Raj Patel apologizing for the initial tweet and explaining that the image was, in fact, unofficial.

Original Story

Microsoft has got something up its sleeve that it’s not sharing with the public until later this year. Xbox Canada Community Manager tweeted this image earlier today picturing a red “II” logo surrounded by blocks of morse code and with the caption, “Hmm…”

According to NeoGAF, the morse code message in the image translates to “Presented by Xbox, 10am PDT, 1pm EST, May 4th 2015.”

So, why the “Call of Duty: World at War 2” buzz?

If you’re all caught up on your Call of Duty marketing history lessons, then you’ll know that new Call of Duty titles are traditionally announced at around 10am PDT on a given day in the first week of May and that the announcements themselves are typically presented by Xbox. They also tend to coincide with NBA Playoffs, and as it so happens, the NBA Conference Semifinals kick off this May 4.

You’ll also know that Treyarch, creators of the World at War and Black Ops sub-series, are very likely stepping up to the plate as this year’s Call of Duty developer, given the franchise’s new three-year development cycle. Sledgehammer Games launched last year’s Advanced Warfare (announced on May 1, 2014) while Infinity Ward lead development on Ghosts the year prior (announced on May 1, 2013).

It’s not a whole lot to go by, but putting two and two together (see what I did there?), it’s got a lot of Call of Duty fans talking about the possibility of a World at War follow up for 2015. In the absence of a triple-A World War II shooters over the past couple of years, perhaps it’s now time to see how the era could be portrayed on next-gen hardware?

What are your thoughts? Is it time for WWII shooters to return? Do you think it’s possible that Treyarch is working on “World at War 2”? Are we way off here? Tell us in the comments and keep your sights on MP1st for more updates.

The new and improved “Tamriel Unlimited” edition of ZeniMax and Bethesda’s MMO RPG based on the popular universe of The Elder Scrolls sports a new white and gold box cover and, at last, ditches the monthly subscription fee that was previously associated with the Mac and PC versions of the title.

Mac and PC owners will automatically upgrade to the new version on March 17 while PlayStation 4 and Xbox One users will finally get their hands on The Elder Scolls Online this June 9, ZeniMax announced earlier today.

For newcomers, the Tamriel Unlimited edition will package the original game plus all previously released content, including the new Justice and Champion systems. An optional monthly fee for ESO’s premium ESO Plus membership will remain should you decide to take part in monthly in-game benefits and a monthly allotment of crowns to spend in the store.

To celebrate, the studio has unveiled the final entry in their four-part series of impressive cinematic trailers which you can catch above. Alternatively, you can watch an over 20-minute supercut of all four ESO trailers in one epic cinematic below.

Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments. Does a subscription-free ESO sound more enticing now?

Star Citizen Developer Opens Public Test Universe, Shares Upcoming Release Schedule and New Arena Commander Trailer

Star Citizen, the epic spaceflight simulator from game developer Chris Roberts, sure is shaping up nicely as it reaches the $70 million mark in its ever-growing crowdfunding campaign, but it still has a ways to go before all of the game’s systems are in place.

During his BAFTA Masterclass presentation last Tuesday, Roberts shared with his audience a handful of dates that he and his studio, Cloud Imperium Games, hope to hit certain releases for various modules that will eventually make up the entirety of Star Citizen.

In addition to the previously released early versions of the Hangar and Arena Commander modules, CIG has further plans for a story-driven single player campaign (Squadron 42), first-person shooter combat, a persistent universe, and a social experience that aims to tie it all together (Planetside).

Here’s what you can expect in the near future

  • Spring 2015 – Beta release of FPS & Planetside/Social Beta
  • Summer 2015 – Arena Commander 2.0 MultiCrew Ships
  • End of 2015 – Persistent Universe Alpha for Backers
  • 2016 – Star Citizen commersial launch

Right now, all backers can take part in Star Citizen’s just-released Public Test Universe by following these steps which will grant you access to the Arena Commander 1.0.1 module. The PTU isn’t a permanent feature but will be used on occasion to test patches and updates.

You can have yourself a look at what Arena Commander is all about by checking out Star Citizen’s latest trailer in the featured section above.
